Yuck!

Hard to understand, speaks with strong accent
Horrible accent, mumbles most of the time, inaudible. Completely unapproachable, no better in office hours either. Tremendous amounts of required homework for grade, ~10 hours per week easily. I tell all students to avoid him like the plague!!!
don't take any of his course... it is very difficult to understand him... and he moves quickly
More like learning Chinese than Math class.
Most students drop rather than endure this professor.
Unless you are a sadist, you should take another prfessor.
He is so cool, i'll take his class again!
Very serious teacher, you can learn a lot math. from him!
he tries hard to help you, my tests were given off the homework assignments, same exact questions, but he pick the hard ones. other than that, his accent kills, and says "TRICKIES" a lot, i think he meant tricks
Very nice and knowledgable guy, i'll take his class again!
This professor is soo hard to understand! I can't follow him too well. If you are just naturally not good at math, you probably won't do good in his class. you basically have to teach yourself the material.
Excellect teacher. He can make learning math fun and rewarding!
He doesn't teach you anything he just writes on the board and says "lots tricky".
Lectures consisted of him copying the examples in the book onto the board with little explanation. Rarely looked at the class and would say, "If no questions, we'll move on" ignoring students with their hands up. Plan on teaching yourself calculus if you take him.

SUCKS!
I like him so much. Everyone should take his class!
SUCKS!! I took this class in the spring time. I got a lousy c+ out of it. Most the class failed the first and second tests. By the end of the semester only 9 or so of us remained. Now, that is just bad teaching. Couldn't speak English, was not helpful, and wore sandles with socks. Now I know that has nothing to do with math, but it bugged me!!!!!!!
Easy teacher, tests are the exact problems taken from the homework. He assigns a lot of homework too. Teaches directly from the book. Don't need to be there to learn the material but 10% is pop quizes so youll want to ditch but lose out on grade. Easy overall but boring. And he always says 'wector' instead of 'vector'. Distracting to say the least.
Took during Summer Session-Exam questions directly from HW, study and you'll be alright. He isn't very helpful, and even is condescending if the class has difficulty comprehending a concept, etc. Thick foreign accent difficult at times. With a large dept. full of a variety of professors, I'd look elsewhere.
Horrible teacher, but easy class if you study. Show up for the quizzes, but if there's none, then just sleep. Heavy accent, he says refraction instead of reflection, and amplititude instead of reflection, among other things incorrectly. avoid
Terrible teacher. Everything is straight out of the book with little or no explanation or detail whatsoever. 75% of my class failed the first test. Allows you to use write down formulas on tests, but several people in my class used all their notes and homework on tests and he didn't care or didn't notice.
I loved the predictability of this class. If you like knowing exactly what to expect in each class, then this is the class for you. Professor Li is a really nice guy. If you need his help, he will even stay after class to show you how to work a problem step by step. A lot of people dropped his class. but the ones who stayed loved it.
Asked teacher to write out steps he said no, went too ask him question and told me it was not his office hours. I told him thatI had a class during his office hours and he said he couldn't satisfy all his students and sent me on my way.. Test is from hw. but there is alot of hw. Accent is there not bad its his attitude of not wanting to help.
Dr. Li is really a nice teacher, but passing his class is impossible without hard work!
Prof.Li is a very nice and responsible teacher I ever met at UNLV. He is tough, but I learned a lot from his class. Unfortunately, he moved to UCLA after this semester. What a loss to us!
He is an okay teacher if you have a strong background in math, otherwise you may be confused. He usually misunderstands a question you may ask. His tests come straight from the homework so if you do each problem you should be fine.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TEACHER DO NOT TAKE HIM!! HE CAN BARELY SPEAK ENGLISH AND IS RUDE TO ALL OF HIS STUDENTS! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
i don't care about what the other students said. my point, he is a good teacher! his class is the easiest class i have never took. the test base on the homework. which means he give you the question and answer on the test. if you still complain on that, well.... ......i have to say.....you know what i mean
There were multiple occasions when he would work out an example in the book and get a different answer than the book... and then tell us that the book (9th ed) is wrong. When you check, you realize the book is, in fact, correct. Like others said, tests are straight from the homework, so not too bad. Book is hard to understand, teacher is harder.
He is the worst teacher I've ever had. His exams are ridiculus and he is relentless on the grading. He will even take points back from an exam if you go up to get more points and he finds something he thinks isn't to his standards. No joke, he is a horrible teacher. The funny thing is, he likes that most fail. I couldn't say enough bad about him.
This professor is relentless. This goes for grading and getting help on the homework. He's not clear at all, and his tests throw everyone off. I studied for a week for the second exam and STILL failed, along with three quarters of the class! If you want to take Calc III, go find someone else; you will not pass this class or you'll get a low grade.
Cons: Typical math prof. Boring lectures. Not really helpful. Pros: Randomly takes attendance. Extra credit HW problems. No quizzes. EXAMS ARE EXACTLY FROM HW. WORD4WORD! Advice: DO ALL HW. u don't really have to show up to class. Just do all HW and know how to do it on exam. Then you should have no problem getting an A.
he moves super fast through the book and we finished all the chapters with about 3 weeks left of school, so stay on top of your homework. i wasnt able to keep up with the class because i was taking another harder class, but i would not take him again.
Hard to understand him and the material but tests are DIRECTLY from homework, he doesn't give any surprises. The discussion teacher was much clearer, that's where I learned everything.
teacher does not clarify anything. lectures are completely useless. he explains things in the most difficult ways when there MUCH easier ways to show the solution. which makes the student have to go and teach themselves calculus. only useful thing about this class is the TA. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. DO NOT TAKE. he has 50 percent fail rate.
I never should have taken his class, it would have saved me a lot of money. He goes at an extremely fast pace and isn't very good at explaining the examples he shows in class. The first test that we took was so difficult that nearly everyone failed. I decided to audit the class and save myself from messing up my GPA. Don't take him!!!
If there ever a worse professor I'd be quite surprised. I read a previous post where somebody said he seems to 'take pride' in failing students, and it is pretty accurate. I'm re-taking with another professor, and no exaggeration: I learn more in one lecture then I did an entire semester in his class. AVOID THIS PROF!!!
Horrible is an understatement. I took him over summer session one, and with every new topic he said "if you don't understand this you won't pass" but he would never directly answer questions directly. He gave three tests, and let's you use a sheet of notes but 7q's 15 pts each. Impossible.
If you are good in math and can study alone, this class is perfect for you. The teacher is just too smart. The tests are questions out of the homework most of the time and he would tell you lots of helpful information about the tests so they are easy.. lots of hmwk but helps the total grade in the end. I worked hard and got an A.
If math doesn't come easy to you, and I mean EASY, then DO NOT take this professor. Sure, he knows what he's talking about but he moves at lightning speed and will slow down for no one. If you're lost from the get go good luck trying to make sense of it all in the end. Math 124 is hard and he MAKES THAT KNOWN. Trust me, use caution.
Hard to understand. Does not explain what he's doing, instead he solves each problem on the projector and you just copy down the steps, but you don't know why you're doing it. Definately a lot of self motivation and outside study to understand anything.
Oh my God, don't take this his class. He is extremely hard to understand and he does not explain any problems. The TA was way more help than this guy. I learned everything in Calculus either in tutoring or study sessions and whenever I went into class I left extremely confused.
He has a heavy accent, but he tries his best to explain using examples. If you can't understand, his TA is great. If you still can't, you probably don't have a good foundation for math. ~5 problem tests(10-20 pts each), 3 total for the semester- all from the HW. Need to be self-motivated.
If you do not have a strong math background then DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Yes he has an accent, but the accent was not the issue, it was his inability to communicate properly with the class. He sits on the doc cam working examples problems from the book and every 20 min or so he looks up at a sea of confused faces and continues regardless.
Not the greatest teacher. He is very confusing and doesn't care if you learn the material or not during his lecture. Doesn't answer questions (or if he does you'll be even more confused). However, he is passable. Tests came directly from the homework with a few exceptions.
He is the greatest teacher I ever have: very smart, very care about our progress. You jst need to work hard and do the homework serious, since his test problems are all from homework problems.
Not a fan of teachers who read directly from the book. Thats what this class consisted of. We started with 50 people, and around 10 of us took the final. The exam questions were directly from the homework, which is great. Great if your homework gets graded, and they aren't abstract proofs. Dont know how these people have jobs, Good luck.
Tests are directly from homework problems. Now, prepare to teach yourself everything, thats the catch. There is no curve, but that could be since the tests are from homework problems.
This teacher is not the greatest teacher to learn from. I took him for summer session 1. His test are based off of homework problems and choses the harder problems from each section. Make sure if you don't understand it you get a help because they'll be easier to understand than him. He teaches you from the book and he goes over the material quick
If you have this professor prepare to feel sub-par, depressed, and overwhelmed. Impossible to get an A unless you're a prodigy math genius. Prepare to fail, to commit, and to fail again. There is no winning with this guy, he's incredible arrogant borderline proud of the fact that 50% of his students fail in all his classes.
His final test is brutal! He gave us a review with sample problems, and the test came out almost exactly the same except... the problems were far harder!! On the other 2 tests are came out directly from the Homework problems, so prepare to study hard on them!
Sits by projector and copies notes straight from textbook. He is too smart for everyone and has a heavy accent.
There are only 2 midterms and the final exam so you have to do well on them as they make up 80 percent of your grade. Dr. Li emphasizes the importance of doing homework, and he's absolutely right. Most of his test problems are directly from the homework so if you do your homework, you should be fine.
Prof Li is a tough grader. On tests, he give almost no partial credit. He is very smart but he expects the students to also be as smart as him. Yes most of the test problems are from the homework but you have to have the exact work and wording he has. Stay away....
Jichun Li is a bad professor. I used to love maths, but not with him. He should be your last option. The way u can make it through his class is by doing all the homework he gives, which are a lot. Do your homework with tutors. There are 4 exams, and everything comes from the homework problems.
He was a terrible professor, and continually told students that they were going to fail. He was not kind, and also did not follow the disability resource center accommodations.
Failed. Put in a fair amount of studying with tutors. Mr. Li's teaching style, projector notes. Basically you have to teach yourself if you don't understand the book. 2 tests, 1 final comprehensive. Homework was given after each section. Wasn't comfortable with asking questions bc of classroom teaching environment. Need to ask for grades in person
Took Professor Li, for Math 124 summer term 1. All the test questions are from the book. He goes over all or most of the homework questions. He was a pretty easier grader. Gave a lot of partial credit. The first two test had 9 questions (weren't the super challenging questions) the last test had 12 questions. Let us use calculators :)
If you do the homework you will definitely pass. I just did homework and went over it and i did good on his exams. Its a lot of homework tho so you got work but it was not too bad.
You honestly just have to do the homework and work hard on it and go over it and you should pass his class. All about discipline and sitting down to do the homework.
I thought he was a great professor. He really wanted to try to help students understand and pass the class, but he can only do so much. You need to put in the work. Go to class and do the homework. It's basically free points towards your grade. The homework will help you on the tests. Go to tutoring and the discussion too and you should be fine.
Dr. Li is by far the worst professor I've ever had. Exams make up 80% of your grade, while homework, quizzes, and attendance contribute 20%. His idea of lecturing is copying down theorems out of the textbook (which is filled with typos) and speaking into the whiteboard. His TA's explanations were horrible as well. Exams questions come from homework
Real teachers do the following: present the material, teach the material, grade the material, and continuously assess this as a process to discover if the teaching and/or the learning is working. Some teachers, the ones to avoid, like this 'teacher', fail at one of these. Jichun fails to do ANYTHING besides presentation. PDF's alone ! teaching.
I understand that the pandemic makes teaching hard but this class was honestly the biggest joke and waste of time/money that I have ever had to deal with in university. The only good thing about this class is that the tests were based entirely off of the homework so if you did the homework you had the answers. Learned absolutely nothing though :(
This professor is a complete joke. He reads from directly from slides and won't respond to questions from students. The only thing I learned in this class was how to watch $1000 go down the toilet.
Dr. Li is the most respected and responsible professor I ever have. He taught real time for every class during the pandemic time. He only tested problems from assigned homework. You should get an easy 'A' by just doing the homework problems.
He is just amazing. He is so kind. He gave me good feedback and inspired me a lot. Even if we had issues with covid-19 and we did online classes, he was very nice and helpful. I would 100% loved to have him again as my lecturer.
Never in my academic life, have I felt like I waste so much time in school. The language barrier is a real problem. He does try to explain as best as he can but I didn't want to hold the class back or embarrass him. HWK is due too soon (3 days). The Gilbert Strang textbook is too advanced with PURE MATH questions. No application problems.
It makes me really sad to see all these bad reviews about him. He was one of the only professors over the summer to actually lecture live & hold office hours everyday. His accent is completely understandable and using that as an excuse to do poor in the class is tacky. He's a genuinely nice man who was always helping us. Do the work and succeed.
This class is one of the most that I have ever had trouble figuring out how to do HW. Reason he does nothing but copy and paste from the book. Second 80% of your grade is three tests fail one and it is over class avg below 60% will yell at the class for the failure and say that it is you fault and not his.
No online materials and lectures on examples in the book. High fail rate, not good overall.
Truly a sad sight. The average grade on the first test was a 30% and he refused to curve. He proclaimed that in the "real world" there is no such thing as a curve. He reads directly from the textbook and doesn't truly pause to add his own insight. There is 0 and I mean 0 interaction with students when teaching. An embarrassment to the teaching.
It's sad that 2 rates said nasty words about Prof. Li. He is the best math professor I ever have! He cared about us by giving an extra test and all tested problems came from assigned homework problems. He knows the materials very well and even showed us how they can be applied for Covid-19 modeling. I will definitely take his courses in the future!
I just saw those comments for MAT431 for Prof. Li. I feel shameful for those students who blame Prof. Li for everything. Actually I feel he is the most respectable and care math professor I ever had. He only tested the assigned and graded homework problems. If you do your homework seriously, passing is a sure thing.
you might as well read the textbook at home cuz he reads directly out of it and blames your algebra skills for your failure. he just writes whatever is in the textbook and doesnt explain anything/works way too fast in lecture. i feel bad for everyone who isnt gonna pass cuz it took an arm and a leg for me to get an a
Awful experience. Lectures are dense and by the book, his solution if you're struggling is just to do more homework. Exams weigh hard and most fail + no curve given, and he shifts all blame to students + even the TA. Directly told us we weren't worth his time. Pretty heavy HW, all on paper, and you must ask to see your grade. Miserable all around.
Professor Li is not even a bad professor. A lot of kids twisted his words to make him out to be a bad guy. This class was extremely hard and get ready to put HOURS of studying in, but it pays off. Make sure to show up to class and do homework because problems on the test come straight from it. He allows a formula sheet on the test.
Professor Li should be your last choice for Calc 1 if you don't already have a very strong background in math as he rarely backtracks or slows down to do a review on the algebra parts (which are usually why the concepts are hard to grasp). There were two exams and one final but bombing anyone would be hard to make up. He was also very demeaning.
Not even done with the course and I already had to drop. Terrible instructor, made it clear several times that he would rather teach his PHD students rather than "waste time" teaching us. Asked about grading on some exams and he told the class of 50 students that we could go buck fuffalos. this can be corroborated by the entire class
Does a terrible job explaining everything and even if you ask a question he will direct you to the TA. He is incredibly difficult to understand and does all work on a projector, be ready to tell him to adjust the paper every 30 seconds because it will never be on screen .
Jichun Li is at times degrading to students. 30 students dropped his class when i took it because of how challenging he was making it. exams have few questions, he allowed a sheet but never really explained concepts. Blamed his TA for his shortcomings.
Dr. Li made it very clear how important it was to seriously do the homework and participate. I never missed a lecture, completed all homework assignments (about 2-4 hours a day depending) and received As on all quizzes. I ended the class with an F due to poor testing. Dr. Li will give you credit until the first mistake on tests, so be perfect.
