DONT TAKE THIS PROF! Unless you want a Prof. that gives 4 papers, poor grading, boring lecture, 3 speeches, 2 tests and a Final!
She does not teach very well, nor does she really seem to know much about what she's teaching.
Wow! She's not that bad, you just have to apply yourselves a little more. If anyone ever looked at their syll. they'd know what to do. 3 papers & group presentations. no book, common knowledge if you at least know a little history from 1900 up. LOTS of extra credit.. shes a bit lesbianish.. nothing wrong with that.
She is the worst history teacher I've ever had. If you want to learn anything about world history. Don't take Acree. She is very vague and unprofessional. Her powerpoints are hard to read, very boring and have errors in spelling, grammar, and actual fact. She does not use the assigned textbook at all. She doesn't explain assignment requirements.
I agree with the previous rater ... most of the ratings are off-base & some of the remarks are offensive. People need to get a grip & check themselves. Acree is a solid, knowledgable teacher ... very helpful if you ask/email her. I've written her a bunch of emails about the papers & projects, & she responds asap. P.S. Don't take class if u r lazy
Class is hard but prof is okay. Got to write lots of papers and she grades tough but fair. Everyone does bad lol. Lots of xtra credit opps tho. If you show up, do your work & take advantage of xc, you should get a B or C at worst.
This professor is absolutely useless. Nothing you do will suffice to her demands. It's impossible. She doesn't explain how she wants her papers written, then rages when it's not up to par. If you want a class in which you turn everything in on time and study the given material, yet STILL fail miserably, then Acree is the pick of the lot.
I retook this class after getting a C- the first time. Went to every class, turned in every paper, and extra credit ops. She is so unclear about everything. Course text book is not used at all. Usually get A's on my papers- in all classes, but final paper I got 14/25. Only took her because I signed up with another professor, but got her instead.
She grades tough but is fair and gives plenty of xc. A or B is def attainable. Must show up tho and take advantage of every xc. Ask for help if you need it. She looks for who's going to put in the xtra effort. Informative and interesting prof.
Good teacher but grades VERY rough at times. Gives plenty of extra credit though. Class is not mandatory but MUST show up to do well. Not a prof for those looking to just slide by in a typical ge class.
No one slides by in this profs class. Everyone should expect to put in a decent amount of time and effort to get a good grade. It's definitely not impossible to do well, but you must be proactive. Participate, ask questions, & do all the xtra credit. This class is fine then.
Do not take!
This professor is not there to see anyone succeed. Honestly, lectures were pretty good. But she demands a massive amount of work for a class that you "must" take to graduate. She is unclear, almost makes fun of students for there work or comments and is not approachable. If you are a history major, take her. If not, STAY FAR AWAY!!!
Tough? Yes. But that's because she expects you to work hard and do good work. Do that and you do fine. Don't, and you have a problem--and the people who are complaining had problems.
I showed up to every class did the assignments and still failed. Yes at first I thought it was just me but the class average is a D- so go figure
This teacher is not clear on the information she wants you to know for her exams. If you try to ask questions she will most like speak down to you without answering your question. The class is very hard mostly due to the teachers lack of communication of what she expects on her exams. Other than that she is an Ok teacher
The most vague and unclear professor i have ever had the misfortune of taking. Very bad at explaining things, and almost talks down to students for not understanding something. Demands massive amounts of extremley detailed work for a mere several points in a class that is required of most study fields. Terrible teaching style, would not recomend.
Very fair teacher. She is very helpful with answering questions. This is not a class for lazy people, there is a lot of work but if you attend classes and take notes you will be fine
An easy class, just listen to the lecture, pay attention to the PowerPoint, and take abundant notes. Huge criticism would be the extreme high demand for detailed responses in written classwork, the quiz essays, and the two papers. There was always a demand for 'more' but when asked for clarification, she gave off the feeling of being bothered.
Not a good Professor. I was basically forced to withdraw from this class due to the fact is that it is way to hard. She does her job right but she doesn't understand how to put in the context that you would need to know for your work. For example, we had a paper due and I don't ever recall her speaking of that topic, and I took notes everyday.
I enjoyed her class and she was a fair grader. Make sure the written test are in YOUR words and not paraphrased from the book. Extra credit was given by attending seminars and writing a small essay of 500 words. Make sure that is in your own words as well or you won't get anything. Overall I liked her class.
She is not an easy professor, but a great professor! Sure, the workload is a lot, but if you come to class everyday and do the work, then you will succeed. She does offer extra credit, if you come to class everyday. She will help any student if you show motivation. This class is not for to weak at heart, but great class and great lectures.
The class was great. She is a demanding professor that is true, but her class is simple, show up, take notes, ask questions, and DO THE READING. She is hard on essays, but I like that..she made me better, and I appreciate that as I am paying an awful lot of money to be educated...she simply makes my money worth it.
Excellent Professor, but very strict with her grading. In my opinion she made me a better student this semester and challenged me. Show up, take good notes and do the reading and you will do fine. She is very encouraging and will help you with anything you are having trouble with, you just need to ask.
She chalenges you all the way. If you want easy grade do not take this class. USE YOUR OWN WORDS. For her is important to see that you have understood the material. Her directions are not very clear.
So when I look at these ratings I usually assume that the student are lazy and scores the teacher low this teacher grades hard the questions for the quizzes set you up for failure and she knows it She took pride that her % of students are at a 69%AVERAGE the class is close to failure Grades hard Avoid taking my 4.0 will go down cause of her class
The person who wants to keep his or her 4.0 really must love easy classes. Acree is tough, yes, but it's college and her requirements are like anybody elses.
Very difficult, do not take online. Very demanding and irrelevant topics.
The worst teacher I have had! She is very degrading. Does not present material in an understanding manner. Her tests are impossible to pass! Never can meet her standards. Not a 101 class.
This was the hardest online course I'd ever taken at CSN. I can honestly say I earned my grade of B. Stay away if you want an easy class. If you take this course, be prepared to manage your time well as you will actually have to read the textbooks and be able to articulate the concepts in your own words.
A lot of people seem to want a no-brainer class. I had to work hard. I got a lower grade then I wanted. But the professor was fair and did her job. If the other students did their jobs as well as she did hers, they would of done better.
She is the type of educator that I've wanted since I started college. Her primary focus is not getting you through the class, but making sure you learn and understand the material. You have to read the textbook. You have to write an essay every two weeks. But she is fair in her grading and clear on what she wants. Overall fantastic class.
Avoid her classes at all costs - especially online. Her grading scale is extremely harsh and unforgiving, yet she never gives any clear instructions on what she wants on the assignments besides "do the work" and fails to give feedback on completed assignments. I scraped by with a B but this was by far the worst class and professor I've ever had.
this instructor is horrible. i am a straight A student and this will be my first c ever! i have studied much harder classes like a&p and she makes it impossible to pass. every time i wrote a paper she said i needed to proofread. when i had and had it looked over by the writing department... she grades harshly and gives vague instructions.
Just finished this eight week online class and was able to pull a B...I'm an A student. The work was within reason however; this instructor's grading practices are ridiculously harsh and unfair. Miss Acree, you teach at CSN not ivy league. Get over it! Avoid this class at all cost. Not because of the work but because grading is unfair.
She is very hard and not helpful. Ask her a question and she will not give accurate answers. She tell you to figure it out. Avoid her class. Her grading on the essays are hard. I rate her 1. She should change her demeanor and be more flexible with the students. We pay for these classes and we expect a teacher to have respect and teaching skills.
This teacher was really upsetting to me. This is a very demanding online class with two quizzes and an essay due every two weeks. Her grading on the quizzes was very tough and then she does not give comments on why she graded the way she did. Also the way she words questions on the quizzes is super confusing. Do not take this class!
Being a fan of history I thought this would be a great class. I was very wrong. The professor, when asked a question did nothing to answer the question asked, only answered in generalities. Tests were the worst I've ever taken. Written in a very convoluted manner and multiple answers fit the question.
Had assignments that were art history related, not western civilization related. No rhyme or reason to her grading, and will not provide an answer when asked about specifics of why a grade was received. I would recommend avoiding this professor, as chances are that you will not like the outcome.
Tough teacher to take but her lectures are THE BEST; explains concepts & events very well. Textbook & supplementary reading are absolute musts, she assigns discussion/participation grades on them. Lots of essays & scant multiple choice quizzes; you HAVE to be on your game. Wish I did better in her class, late assignments were my grade's downfall.
I'm not sure how her rating went up to a 2.5. When I last checked she was at a 1.5. This was a very difficult class. I do not recommend and all of those who have responded negatively I agree with you. When being graded you can see the class scores and medians. I barely got my "A" and really had to work. the avg. grade was a "D". Do not take!
Prof Acree is the best--she is a consummate intellectual and really knows her history! The negative comments about her on RMP are from the too many lazy-assed students who should simply quit school and work in food service where their grandiose, self-inflated anti-intellectual attitudes will go far. Prof Acree is the best!
Booooo, I don't recommend her. She is extremely annul about grammar and "proper modern English". Every other week two quizzes on two chapters and s really time consuming essay/discussion post/not fun stuff. I don't even feel like I'm learning, just trying to keep up. NOT recommend if you have other classes!
This is not a history class, it's an English composition class. This is for you if you like writing. You'll get lots of essay assignments & quizzes. She is very cut, dry, and has high standards. This class will discourage you big time if you're not really good at her class. Trust me, I am very competitive and not LAZY!
Do the work, you'll do well. Be lazy or expect a gut course, you'll get the low grade you deserve.
The hardest part about the course were the essays. You're restricted to the course material provided. She doesn't like personal opinions in essays. She uses videos online and lecture but the tests and quiz answers are all found in the book. Not everything on the quiz is covered in the lecture so you will have read the text. She's very professional.
I am a history buff, but this instructor dosen't respect students. Not a history class but an english class. This instructor goes way off corse, if you want to learn history. Take it from a different professor!
The class was not at all what I was expecting or hoping for. I didn't learn anything from her class.
Do you like being allowed only 20 minutes for a 10-question quiz of obscure facts buried in an enormous chapter of your book? Do you enjoy being graded on the quality of your grammar instead of the actual answer to the question that you spent 6 hours researching? Love snide feedback and ambiguous guidelines? Then boy, do I have the class for you!!!
If you don't go to class you aren't fully equipped to do well for the major assignments, participation is a huge part of your grade. Lecture take the full class period. She helps you when needed and gives a few extra credit opportunities. A few essays but if you follow the criteria and go to lecture should be easy.
I think Jill Acree is a great teacher! She is really smart and she gives good feedback. I learned more from her courses than any other courses I've taken at CSN. You can't google answers to her quizzes or slack. She expects you to read and understand the material. You will not do well if you are lazy. Seriously though people, it's college.
Her requirements for essays are way too difficult because she limits quotes you can use, you're only allowed to used documents she assigns and she is a tough essay grader, she makes you feel like an idiot during lectures and her quizzes have many trick questions even w books help. I 3 History,I had AP Eng. Got a D in her class. DO NOT TAKE CLASS
Shes an awful teacher. please do NOT take her. shes very difficult grader. makes you feel stupid. I took AP English and always got C's and D's on her essays. she limits the amount of words you can use but always tells you to explain more. It's like she finds joy in your failure! Don't take her. Seriously tough teacher. You've been warned!
She was tough but fair. I got the grade I earned. The people who are whining on here, get used to being in college. If you can't handle being in college, go do something easy and brainless.
She. Is. Terrible. Tough teacher with a bad attitude. She is very disrespectful and grades very harshly. I do not recommend her to anyone. There are word limits on her essays, yet when you meet the limit she knocks off points because "its not specific enough" she also puts trick questions in her multiple choice tests. This is a no go.
The good things about this online class is that it is very manageable. 2/3 10 question quizzes, discussion post, and short essay due every 3 weeks. However, the quizzes are extremely challenging as the answers are buried in one sentence of the whole chapter. You basically have to re read it when taking the test in 10 minutes. Grades super hard.
She is the most terrible teacher I have ever had. If you take her class, expect to be talked down to in a condescending manner. She seems to dislike being asked questions and usually gets an attitude when she is answering them. The content isn't terribly hard however she is an extremely strict grader. If you like your 4.0 GPA don't take her class.
The people who complain are the people who don't want to work. She isn't "condescending," but she obviously gets tired of dumb questions based on people not reading. So, do the work, get help if you need it, and you'll do fine.
This is by far the worst history professor I've ever had. She acts as if she's an English Professor, and I have never proofread any of my writing as I am that confident in my skills and always get A's. She graded me 35/105 on an Essay which I've met all my requirements and couldn't tell me anything but "proofreading" and be more "specific".
Absolutely horrendous. Contradicts herself in her own directions. Uses off topic material for essay sources. Assigns video links that are broken, which forces you to find it somewhere else. Grades VERY harshly. Even if you go above and beyond for an essay, the best you might get is a C+. More of an English class than a history class. Do not take!
I have to laugh at the student complaining about how they are so confident that they don't need to proofread their writing. Right. It's college. Acree is a college professor. She expects college-level work. Papers full of errors aren't college work.
This class had more writing than my English 102 Composition class. She is very harsh when it comes to grading anything written. She often gives unconstructive, discouraging, and vague feedback like: proofread; break up long paragraphs; be more specific, even when meeting or exceeding guidelines. I scored high on everything and still got comments.
There are weekly chapter quizes online and are all realetively easy. Class participation is a part of the grade. Grading is clear and she will explain the essays 2-3 weeks prior to the due date and provides all of the sources needed.
Terrible teacher. Would never suggest taking her class. DO NOT TAKE. A ghost the whole online class except 2 weeks after you turn in an assignment with maybe a comment. Learned more about "how to be a bad teacher" rather than Marco Polo....... (took 2 online classes for the first time and this one was by far the worst in comparison)
Acree is a wonderful professor. She is very clear about the instructions on all assignments. Discussion posts and tests are very straight forward.
Professor Acree does not seem interested in teaching history, she is more into being an English professor. Though it is always encouraged to ask questions in class, she tends to have a chip on her shoulder when giving out answers. Her essays are simply not salvageable to get A's. Gives directions on how to write them and takes points off anyway.
This professor is a great professor when it comes to trying to make you a better college student, though her grading scale is a little rough. You can give 110% and she would give you a 60%. Read the book as it will help you greatly on discussions, essays, and the quizzes. Study and you will do good in her class.
This instructor is inexperienced, possibly have taught for only 10 years or less. She does not provide rubrics for her essay assignments which means she grades subjectively and unfairly. Her instructions & assignments are very vague, & irrelevant. She just assigns them for the sake of "busy work". Be prepared to get a C in this class.
Though the content is not at all complicated, more often than not the professors instructions are difficult to understand. It can vary anywhere from vagueness to over complicated and unfocused. When questions are asked, the answer given is often not a direct answer to your question. To sum up, I've had a very difficult time giving what she wants.
She is a control freak to the nth degree. I'm writing an essay about freedom (paradoxically) in which she has chosen every single element for me. It's so tedious, and it teaches me too little about history to be considered effective. I think many of the comments are suspiciously similar. Perhaps someone can't handle criticism?
Terrible professor. I felt like this was an English class instead of a History class. She grades way too harshly and critiques everything. She seems to have a chip on her shoulder. I am, however, glad I got an A. But did I ever work for it. I would not take again.
This class should be considered a Composition class, with emphasis on historical events. You will be marked down for every grammatical mistake you can imagine, and your participation grade will dwindle quickly. Also, difficult to even understand what content she is looking for on discussion posts.
I would not recommend taking this as a fast-paced course, or with this professor. History is a painful subject to study and this instructor doesn't make it any less painful. I'm lucky I even passed this class.
Cannot recommend. Straight A history major and got a C in this class. She does not provide a rubric and grading is often subjective and nit picky (marked me down once significantly for being short 12 words). The book is good and the quizzes were helpful, but I've never had a prof who seemed to hate their subject and take all the joy out of it.
I love history, but hated this class. She seems like she's angry all the time, and really does not care about your comments or questions when participating in class. While she's not the worst professor I've had, she's certainly pretty far down there. Be ready to do a bit more work than you might expect, and expect to not enjoy any of it.
If it is the same one that I had back in 2009. Good luck to those. Worst one that I ever had
It sad to face a professors like this one, she says that she will not give away grades, nobody asked her for that. Most of the students must be wrong about her in these reviews because nobody does anything about it . She should not teach in college. These reviews must be observed by the Board of Directors and they must do something!
Teacher is incredibly strict, but to the point that its almost beyond me. Turned in a assignment one second short, contacted professor who then told me -a second short is still short and to try harder next time. Also didnt provide me with explanation on a low essay grading. A shame when professors could care less about their students success.
I love History, and I love writing. However, the way that she assigns the papers to be done in the class is a joke. All sources are provided for the student. Each paper is literally just analyzing the validity of the source by using the same set of guidelines that she provides. Unimaginative, restricting, and worst of all, uninspiring. AVOID.
There are alot of quizes and they are timed. The last two questions on each quiz is essay questions. She is a tough graded so make sure to listen to her feedback.
There is a syllabus quiz, 15 quizzes, 8 2-page essays, 4 constitution quizzes, 2 chapter discussion leader essays, and one final 8-page essay. 35 points e.c. for submitting assignments on time. She grades attendance as well. Quizzes are timed & each has two essay questions. It's a good class if you're not afraid of doing some learning by yourself.
Just started this class 3 days ago and there was 5 assignments due along with test. I am already failing. She isn't going by the book she makes us get for history 101.
Acree is a tough grader and even though she says explain in 2-4 sentences, be prepared to punch out a few paragraphs. Proofread proofread proofread, 3 weeks in with 0 missed assignments and Im already hurting
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is a horrible professor. She is a very tough grader and gives incredibly vague feedback. She gives you assignments where you have to read through documents that are not in modern English and do assignments based on these documents. Assignments are very hard to understand. I am a straight A student but not in this class.
I'm 4 weeks into this class and it has made me absolutely hate college. I love to learn and I love history, but this professor acts more like an English teacher than a History one. I've asked her about the grade on every one of my assignments and she always gives a vague response. There is no room for improvement and very little to go on. AVOID!!!!
If you love to make things hard on yourself for no apparent reason, you should take her class. This professor doesn't grade you on how well you understand the material, but on how well you did it. She also is very vague regarding feedback. She also makes you type VERY LONG discussion replies. She also makes you read instead of look at a powerpoint
Hist 100 is an 4 credit class, but you still can get things done the night before. There are 5 discussion papers (1-3page) and two big projects (3-5page). Some quiz but not timed, have a lot of reading( up to 9 articles) an a lot of discussion sections. Need to participate in the discussions( it's graded) need to go to class, she keep records.
The assignments are easy to do if you pay attention and read the material that you are given. The lectures themselves are long and sometimes boring but you're not required to really take any notes.
I took Professor Acree in the fall and I really enjoyed her. She made the lectures fun. The only thing is it is required that you participate as it is for a grade. If you put in a little effort and study you should pass with no issue.
Profesor Acree is very helpful with feed back on the essays she assigns. She allows one rough draft review per assignment which is extremely helpful. Im glad I took her summer History class.
I love history so when I took this class I expected to enjoy it. Boy was I wrong!! She is the absolute worst. If you want history, your better off turning on the TV. There is zero history in this class. Your entire grade is based on your writing ability. I read reviews and still took it, do not do what I did.
Avoid Professor Acree shes something else. Shes a tough grader and acts more like an English professor than a History one as previously stated. Quizzes a easy but be prepared to write a lot for essays and discussions. I strong recommend you NOT to taking her class specially during the summer.
Heavy on synthesis essay writing. Acree expects you to come to a 100/101 course with English 300-400 writing skills. She grades harshly and acts more like an English Professor then History. I have an A in my English 101, yet somehow my History grade is a B - because, English and Grammar issue according to Acree. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
She gives way too much reading and writing assignments, so prepare to read A LOT. Her class feels more like of an English class rather than history, She is really strict about grammar and spelling in essays. I honestly feel like I did not learn anything in this class. Instead, I learned how to improve in writing essays.
I do not Recommend Professor Acree. Like many reviews, before me, the class is more English than history. There was nothing provided for learning except for her essay on the subject and links to outside sources. Be ready to be overwhelmed with assignments and be graded harshly on them. Never provided feedback until way after the assignment was due.
DO NOT take this professor. Every bad review is 100% true. I was stuck taking this class because the highly rated professors were taken. She is an extremely tough grader, and the class is graded mostly on how well she thinks you write essays. Discussion posts have a high word count requirement and she grades those tough too.. AVOID!
Personally wouldn't take this professors again.. super tough grader, material was not bad overall though. I'm surprised I even passed this class. If you have other choices of professors for history choose them instead, good luck.
Her course requires quite a bit of attention. If you have another job working full-time, I don't recommend it. Working full-time and student full-time was already a known stressor. However, with her class, it was full-time in itself. There's a plethora of reading and she gives you options based on topics which is nice but they generally take hours.
Do not take her If you want a good GPA grades very harshly and is not understanding at all if you work and go to school full time
My class was small so maybe that changed things. It's unorganized and oddly set up: she narrowed down like 10,000 years to a couple time periods, we chose a topic, took notes, and then presented to the class while she stared at you. You talk in silence for 15 minutes, and she only comments when you're wrong. But, if you do the work, you'll do okay.
She is highly disrespectful. I asked her a question with respect to extending a deadline and the way that she responded was very belittling when she could have just said no- would not recommend wasting your financial aid on this professor as she will add to the current stress of already being a student
Terrible professor. Her grading contradicts her own words. She doesn't like the way you worded your assignment? Lost points. Didn't write enough about a single topic even though you've covered everything about it? Lost points. She doesn't agree with your opinion? Lost points. Very rude. Stay away.
The worst Prof I've ever had!!! grades harder than 300 level courses for Hist 100 takes points off against things you've done correctly, saying you didn't do it correctly (Example: all 1 in. margins on essays, says I didn't do that, only I did) NEED TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS TO A "T"!!!! even when u do she doesn't think u did!
(Fall 2021) No vid lectures, just reading a bunch of articles that she wants you to do assignments on. At least there were no tests, IIRC. Hardly any feedback or engagement though. I dunno what happened to teachers in Clark County after COVID, coz most of the ones I've had don't teach. Good luck if you don't understand an assignment.
This professor is a very tough grader, she asks you questions in the assignment and once you answer them and explain them in the way she wants, she gives you a low grade and asks for more that was not in the assignment explanation. If you are good at writing papers and reading then this class is for you.
Yikes, I did not read the other reviews on her before I took her. The class I took was completely online. The main complaint I had was the group projects she required. Trying to communicate and find groups with people when it's an all online course was really inconvenient. She also had a ton of assignments due each week. Wouldn't recommend
This class is completely online but there were several group projects (pick your own partner). Grades harshly. Mentions grammatical errors in work but does not specify where (I still am unable to find the errors). Does not grade assignments using the rubric. Takes points off for requirements not included in the rubric. Workload is manageable.
This class required you to read a lot of articles and prepare each article before class started each day, as long as you participate, you will get a grade and an attendance grade for that day, will be ez if u contribute during class. Midterms and finals require a lot of words (essays) and reading (from modules like articles you've read in classes).
Challenging course with a tough grader. Requires close attention to instructions and lots of reading/writing. Engage in class discussions to boost your grade. unstuckstudy's tools helped me prepare for the intense workload.
This professor shouldn't be teaching a 100-level class. Grading is inconsistent and doesn't match the rubric. Even when all listed requirements are met, points are taken off for unclear or unstated expectations. Feedback is vague or dismissive. If you want fair grading, clear expectations, or helpful feedback, avoid this class.
It was a lot of homework and she didn't really do a lot of late work so that class was a little difficult
I wish I would have checked this site before I signed up for her class. I just dropped her because for someone who puts so much emphasis on grammar and correct writing styles, hers is convoluted and incredibly demeaning. If you made the mistake of adding her class, look at the syllabus and rules of writing to see what I mean. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
I had my first week in her class and it went terrible. I had her for the first two days but I had a feeling I wasn't going to do well in her class. She's kind of opinionated and the way she did notes was sloppy. Quizzes always before next class and group projects..
This is one of the worst professors i've had in a while. She accused me of using a.i when i literally completed the assignment in class. You're also never correct in her class. Any decent answer is meet with a condescending tone to make you feel stupid. Would not recommend.
This professor provides rubric guidelines and indicates that as long as her questions are addressed in your response, full credit will be awarded. However, even when following the rubric and answering the assigned questions thoroughly, the feedback consistently suggests otherwise. It often feels as though there is no way to meet the expectations.
