A stubborn, unflexible professor
Films are neat, but she makes too much out of it. Avoid if you can.
The best teacher at Millersville! If you don't get the papers done on time, it's
She's crazy
No Comments
only 3 papers, she's an ok teacher, but grades really hard!!
I like her, I think she's fair, and helpful
Best teacher ever, cares about students more than anyone
tough but helpful. you work hard but is interesting.smart lady. loves her work
Unclear assignments, extremely hard grader, hard to get a hold of, has favorites
Interesting person. Tough grader. Make sure your final paper in done on time.
she is a little crazy at times. i think she'd be happier as a technology/computer professor.
Excellent professor, one of the very best on campus. Hard, but fair.
She definitely knows what she is talking about. Unfortunately she is strict grading your papers. But overall, I would recomend her. Film class is great.
she is not easy but she sure as hell knows her stuff, and she is fairly nice.
Very cool, smart. Gives more work than you would expect in a film class, but it was enjoyable.
smart prof. excited about her class. alot of work, but definately enjoyable
Great class, lots of work, but I would recomend it to anyone who has come here to LEARN something. Yes it's hard, yes there is a lot of work, but well worth your time and the films are top notch... the Best 'W' at MU
She's living proof that you don't have to be very smart to earn a Ph.D.

Focuses on up to date skills which is very helpful. We will realize it in the future.
Film and American Society: She is a great prof who loves her job. She is very open to your opinions and interpretations of films and loves to see students during her office hours.

changed paper requirements every class...very difficult...looks like mom on home alone
was a challenge to stay awake in her class. for english 110, the pile of work given is tedious. and while the stuff you learn about websites can potentially benefit you, its complete bs that you have to do this and that with the web pages.
Jill is cool. She makes you call her Jill so that's kinda strange. But her class was awesome. If you are a film freak like me you'll like her film classes. I earned an A in both of the classes of hers I took. It was work, but fun work.
Craven is a tough grader for papers. but there is so much other crap to boost your grade. awesome class, films shown are cool as hell. fun and interesting W course
this women is insane she has superiority complex and has a huge huge ego . she makes you do all the assignments on the computer which is a huge pain. she also makes you write to huge papers which together total twenty pages.
TERRIBLE STAY AWAY!if you already have her,DROP HER!the work she makes you do is rediculous.she never sticks to her sylabus, but then one minutes something will be due and noone will even know.webpages in an english class?get real.
she makes you feel inferior to her...most assignments have no point to them...she doesn't follow the syllabus at all...she's real friendly but that doesn't make up for how she grades papers
I call her Jill Crazy. If that tells you anything. She knows her stuff, but holy crap, she loves to get people on plagiarism, even if it is completely unintentional. Wacky.

Beware! She's out to get you, particularly for plagerism even if you're not at all guilty of it. Triple double triple again check your references and citations.
There's lots of symbolism and deeper meanings in films you might not catch on to at first. Do well on quizes and tests early on, slack off later. Bring lunch to class and eat during movies... it'll keep you awake during some of the dull ones.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Intro to Film class and felt that I learned a great deal. The material covered in the course ranges from cinematography techniques and terms to interpretation of film. The workload is substantial especially if you take it as a summer course however, proves to be rewarding in the end.Grades fairly, and has lots of office hours

No idea why anyone does not like this woman. She let me into a 400 level class without the prereq and was extremley helpful. Not even an english or film major and I had no trouble with her class. Just make sure to post on blackboard and do well on your paper, which wont be hard if you follow her assignments which lead up to it. Great teacher!!
Be careful in this class. She's really friendly, and seems helpful, but she can screw you over in the end. Suddenly changes her mind about tests (i.e. a vocabulary test, but not giving any idea what will be on it-even after she says she'll give a list) and grades incredibly harshly. Seems like an easy class until she gets annoyed. Don't cross her.
the class itself was very interesting and Jill knows a lot; she is very headstrong though and sometimes has a hard time accepting others' opinions. Many consider her grading unfair, I found it refreshingly honest and to the point. Excellent class to take if you can deal with her grading and her ego.
Horrible! The worst english professor I have ever had. Very technical and knit-picky. Grades depending on what side of the bed she got up on.
only hard part of her class was the Final. She expects you to know stuff as well as her and grades harshly. You get a 8-10 pg. paper assignment on a director and should have plenty of time during a normal semester to write. Watch movies through class and post discussions on blackboard.
She literally called me stupid and told me that maybe I should go see counseling. It's all because I asked her a simple question about something that didn't make sense to me. I was insulted by her like this all semester!
Some comments here just prove the reality that not everyone is ready for a college-level education. Jill is a wonderfully engaging prof, is always available, and she knows her****. Her classes ARE hard, but that's because she wants to push her students to work at their potential. Reading over these ratings, it's clear who's lacking that potential.
Dr. Craven's class is not super easy, but you will come out of it feeling like you learned a lot. She is really helpful if you are confused about one of her projects. She is a tough grader, but she'll give you a LOT of feedback to help you understand why she gave you that grade. She also gives extra credit if you go to the Writing Center for hel
I would have to say she is the most unorganized prof I have ever had. Most of the time she acts like she doesn't know what day of the week it is. She grades tough only if you have a different view then her. The class could be great if she would remove her head from her you know what.
Can't believe I took this class the last semester of my senior year. Thought it would be interesting. It's not. I fell asleep every class. She's boring, she doesn't teach, she's condescending, doesn't value your comments when you raise your hand in class. Hard "intro level" course, considering she doesn't teach. Basically a waste of 3 credits.
basically... if you're not an english genious then dont take her class. i took this as a summer course. so much was expected in so little time. might have done alot better had i had enough time to write a 10page paper read half the text book and watch a ton of movies to analyize.
If I were to name a mentor throughout my college career, it would be Jill. Her classes are tough, yes, but you'll succeed if you care about your academic career and put forth the best-- after all, that's what you're there for. She's a wonderful lady that's concerned not only about education, but about making a better world. Recommended any day.

Extremely, extremely difficult. Requires a ton of work and attendance. She has extremely high and somewhat unrealistic expectations. Tests are EXTREMELY difficult. I have a high GPA and I am really struggling in this class. Don't take it if you want an A. She will help you if you ask, but the class is a lot of work for very little reward.
Craven is the worst professor I have ever taken in my college career. I am an English Education Major and she should really take some education classes herself. She does not teach all she does is read notes to the class. After taking this class I felt like Millersville ripped me off. I did not learn anything from class and her grading is hard.
Took Politics Film Electronic media, worst class I have ever taken in my life. All but two movies were horrible, she required a lot of work online and wanted us to do a community project plus made you watch additional obscure films on your own time. Not worth the time or the headache from the horrible movies. She is a terrible teacher.DON'T TAKE
At some point in the semester, your workload will become painfully overwhelming. However, she's part of a dying breed of professor that actually cares about your education. She loves her subject, cares about YOU, and will nearly kill herself to provided you with assistance and feedback in your assignments. Be honest with her and work hard.
Taking this class my last semester in college was a waste of my time. This woman is completly unreasonable, and does not give enough feedback. This is suppose to be a writing class.. one paper!? how is that writing? Didnt even show up for the FINAL... She is awful, never take her if you dont have to. Very unorganized, takes forever to get grades!
This is NOT an intro to film course. You will be given a 22 page syllabus on the first day outlning the course expectations and treat it like the Bible. Annoying, unrealistic timetables, extremely tough grader. All but mandatory to attend one evening viewing-she doesn't even show up. Bad enough she acts like big brother with posts on Bb. Horrible
stay away!
Jill is an ok prof - the problem with her and the class is she tends to be very opinionated and does not like to let students share their opinions especially in their papers. She wants me to come to her wacky office hours due to my differing opinions of American Beauty!
It was an interesting class and I really enjoyed it. It's a lot of work but it's worthwhile. However, she failed me on our research paper. She told me my research was wonderful, my sources excellent, everything supported my thesis perfectly. But I used passive voice too much. Her undergrad is in Comp. Sci. I'm an English major.
Challenges her students. You will read a great deal of critical theory. She has an excellent forum based classroom structure, a lot of student presentation and discussion. I am surprised by other ratings, she is brilliant and caring. You just need to do the work.
doesn't teach. simple as that. shows up to class, that's about it. then has an unprofessional rant about the class's opinion on a film differing from her opinion. would not recommend to anyone.
the worst prof. at MU. Do not take a class taught by her. I am surprised any university would let her teach. Very unprofessional and moody. Completely useless when it comes to helpfullness and takes forever to grade things that need feedback, like the paper!
My god she's awful! She's does not teach, and her research paper timelines are way too cramped. DO NOT TAKE HER, SHE IS A WASTE OF TIME!
My god she's not good! She's does not teach, and her research paper timelines are way too cramped. DO NOT TAKE HER, SHE IS A WASTE OF TIME!
NO!!!! WORST MISTAKE OF MY COLLEGE CAREER!! SHE WILL SCREW YOU OVER, DON'T TAKE!!
She is the worst professor I have ever had. Even if you are a good writer and think you will do well, you won't! She grades your paper according to her own opinion. If your organization is not the organization SHE would choose, it is wrong. She gives no reason for assigning the grades that she gives. More like "oh I feel like giving her a C."
Terrible teacher! She tells you the assignment then if you go over the topic with her she acts as though she likes it. However, when you get your paper back she pretty much tells you it was horrible and she hates it. She grades beyond hard and doesn't take the time of day to email you back. My advice is just don't even waste your time taking her.
I didn't like her at all! She doesn't really talk much about the assignments until right before they are due. She goes on a lot about unnecessary things and theres ALOT of reading in the beginning of the semester. There are few graded assignments, one 20 question quiz was worth 20% of my grade! Stupid, long, unnecessary, don't recommend.
She's okay, but just doesn't do a lot of teaching. She does seem do grade papers in a weird way, too. Lastly, watch out for the final, it is pretty tough.
Doesn't teach, grades in a wacky fashion, NOT recommended if you want to keep a high GPA.
Doesn't know what she wants from her students, and is a very unfair grader. Don't take her!
I'm not really sure what she was looking for in the papers. I spent a good amount of time on the paper, and I was surprised when my grade didn't reflect that, but apparently that was the case with a lot of people. It's a tough class, and I'm not sure what else Dr. Craven expected from us. Know the difference between a shot and an edit.
Not a good teacher. She knows her stuff, but acts like her students don't know anything and grades unfairly. Acts like her students are just coming out of kindergarten! DON'T TAKE HER.
I am a Senior with a perfectionist's work ethic and have maintained a very good GPA throughout my college career. Due to course requirements I had to take this course. I cried filling out a WORKSHEET for our research papers. What she asks of students is unheard of, especially since most of us are not FILM majors but ENGLISH EDUCATION majors.
She is the best! She knows her stuff, she keeps it current and she cares about her students! What more can you ask for?! Show up for films an breeze through for an A and actual learning!
she will try to screw you over for plagiarism, be careful. even if you aren't doing it she'll accuse you.
IMPOSSIBLE. The work she assigns is more than I have been assigned in a class. I am taking this as a Gen-ed and would NOT recommend to anyone! She is not very helpful either. I emailed her multiple times asking for feedback with grades and she gave me nothing in response. I am overall disappointed in this class.
Really hard grader! You teach the class not her and then you have a huge final at the end of the semester!!
She just had just work in groups the entire time and did not explain anything. Really nice lady but do not take her for an upper level class!!!
Online D2L discussions every week(gets annoying after a while). Two exams: Midterm & final (final includes an essay). Exams focus on the history rather than focusing on the films watched in class =( 10 page paper about a film's significance in film history. This paper was mentally exhausting. Don't take this class if you just want to watch film
This was an interesting class that brought about many different perspectives and opinions. We'd watch a movie and discuss in class. We'd have weekly discussions on D2L. We posted and crtiqued news articles on FB, made a viral video, and went to political events around campus. Definitely elarned a lot and Craven is always available to help guide you
Nice woman, and knows her field of study well, but she completely lacks any understanding of how long assignments take. Ridiculous grading when it comes to writing papers for her. You can work for endless hours on an excellent paper, but she will still rip it apart because she is so anal retentive. Only take one of her classes if you have to!
I love Dr. Craven a lot! She's very encouraging and supportive with her feedback and she has insightful opinions about the films and the discussion. The paper assigned for the Honors section was a fun exploration of a director's work and she was always able to help .
I had Professor Craven for a Film Art class. She was a fair grader, very caring when it came to requesting extra time (for valid reasons), and super informational. I certainly enjoyed this class, watching movies and analyzing them. She made sure students were aware of some triggering films and always encouraged us to watch with others.
The beginning of the semester is definitely work heavy. IF not a film major or someone genuinely interested, I would pass on the class. She takes it very seriously and simply liking to watch movies will not get you through as most of the movies are not that good. She expects you to show up. She is nice just takes class very seriously.
This woman simply has no regard for peoples time. I took this class as my final gen-ed, and it was more work than any class I had taken in my three years. It seemed like every assignment took more than an hour, which is perfectly fine, unless you have 15 of those assignments due in a week, with other classes and a life of any caliber. Just avoid.
I let bad reviews get in my head and stress me out more than appropriate, don't make that mistake. I took the online summer course. It was A LOT of work crammed in a short time, however, she was very responsive, helpful, and not as tough grading as I expected. She provides an excess of material... don't try to read it all, or even watch it all.
Dr. Craven does not care about her student's schedules or time. She gives a a ridiculous amount of homework, especially this class being a gen-ed for most people. Her D2L page is confusing and when I asked multiple questions about it, she basically said I was the one misunderstanding. Just take a different gen-ed.
Kind and wise professor! Very concerned about foreign students! She will carefully correct your paper and put forward suggestions for revision. You can gain a lot of knowledge in her class! Thanks for meeting such a good teacher!
Dr. Craven knows her stuff but she does not teach that stuff well. Her instructions are unclear, she does not give clear answers to direct questions and she's a tough grader. She also came to class while sick and said it could be coivd
Not even a month into the semester and I am already on academic probation and have overdue assignments, despite doing all the work thus far. If you can avoid taking this class, I would highly recommend doing so.
She CLAIMS you will do a reading, some questions, and a short assessment each week. Not true. There are 70+ questions embedded within the reading in addition to the assignment labeled "questions." Makes you pay $100+ for an online textbook in order to not do her own grading. You'll have to take some mediocre at best films way too seriously to pass.
Watching the films was nice but there was way too much homework. Smartbook assignments, group scene analyses, D2L discussions that require research and an image, plus the final project was a video essay on an intersectional aspect of a film we watched which was a small part of the course content yet for some reason it's worth 20% of the final grade
when you try to ask for explicit instructions, she is generally impolite. Her Sylbus and D2L don't correspond with the assignments she is discussing. You only utilize an eighty-dollar textbook for a portion of the semester. Additionally, the online assignments in the textbook take hours to finish since she is too lazy to grade anything. Just bad
Jill is a kind professor who cares about her students, but her teaching style is just boring. She has a love for older art, this includes films and literature. Most of the literature we analyzed wasn't good I feel like I didn't learn anything from this class. Only one paper though, which wasn't too bad.
Dr. Craven is a very difficult grader (certified nit-picker) and expects a lot from her students (especially if you're in her upper-level English courses). The novels she assigned were pretty dense and higher-level readings. She would assign a looot of reading from class to class. She is a very nice person and generally very understanding.
The workload stated in her syllabus is blatantly false. Expect to spend hours on each reading assignment. Put your name on everything because she will try to claim you didn't do the work- she's facial blind. She gave everyone else in my group a grade and then assumed the 5th person in the photo in a 5 person group was some random stranger I guess.
This class has been the worst class I have taken. She makes you purchase a 100 DOLLAR book so she doesn't have to grade the assignments. She never replies to emails, and if she does, they are the driest responses ever. She gives a bunch of homework and does not consider that you have other classes, work or clubs.
