I took the hybrid class and had Dr. Gulker as my recitation instructor. She did a really good job explaining the material and reinforced it well with stories and examples from pop culture. She also sent out a lot of reminder emails that were super helpful since we only met once a week.
Great teacher and easy A class!
I took the hybrid class and it was probably the biggest mistake of my college career. The required reading was over 75 Microsoft Word pages of text each week with two 40 minute videos and a recitation, with some weeks requiring two chapters. I studied for hours on end for this class and never knew where they were finding exam material. AWFUL.
She is amazing. Definitely my favorite class I have ever taken. Her teaching is incredible and you really learn how to apply the information to the real world. Her exams are extremely fair and if you pay attention and do the reading no doubt you will pass.
Very busy, had a very hard time scheduling office hours and took a long time responding to emails, especially to exam questions right before the test.
This class was a mandatory freshmen one and so my section was not taught by Jill but by another professor. I spent so much money on the textbook, workbook, and access code for this class that she wrote. They had formatting errors, typos and misspellings that negatively impacted my learning especially in a hybrid type class. I would not recommend.
I took the online class and she was recitation instructor. A chapter a week, sometimes too and as long as you do the work that comes with it you will pass. Recitation attendance isn't mandatory but she will collect HW for extra credit points. She always has study guides that exactly match whats on the test. She explains exactly what you need to do.
Hate her class, I can't understand why many people think it's interesting. It is the content itself to be interesting but not her class. Her PPT do not have any notation for important key, and font size is extremely small. And the question in the exam is very detailed, I studied for a week and then only get a 39/50 for exam 2 , hard to get an A
Great person! Very lecture heavy. As long as you go to class and pay attention you'll be fine. Always a good idea to read over lecture notes (provided online) and skim over the book before exams.
Attendance is not mandatory but there are a few participation assignments per semester that you will miss if you are not there to do them.
The participation is really weird. No mandatory attendance, but on any random day she has in class stuff that is 5% of your grade every time. The tests aren't crazy, but they definitely aren't easy either
I really enjoyed the course. I was hesitant at first because I had heard bad things about the hybrid. But I don't know what they were talking about. It's a great class and it makes me wish I could have her in more classes.
I took her for social. Lectures were really funny. I liked the class. She also answered emails super fast.
Took this online. Read the rubric and you'll be fine. She answers emails fast.
She uses this cool lecture thing. Answers questions and spends a lot of time making sure you get the material. Would take her again.
If you take the hybrid make sure Jill is your recitation instructor. I switched into her recitation after taking another girl for the first couple of weeks. Best decision.
Lectures aren't boring. Go to class and you'll do fine.
I hate afternoon classes and this one I don't mind.
Pretty basic course. Would recommend.
Dr. Gulker cares about her students more than just regarding the classroom.
I took PSY 120 with Gulker as the hybrid, and she was my recitation instructor. She's a fantastic instructor and clearly cares about the students. She likes to tell stories that relate to the topic being covered that day, and will help guide you in the right direction when needed. If you can get her as your prof, do it!
PSY 240 is a very interesting class and Dr. Gulker not only has significant knowledge but clearly cares about students and what she's teaching
Dr. Gulker is such a good professor - she clearly cares about the content and her students, and is very enthusiastic when teaching. Classes are engaging because she connects with the students well and does not behave like a strict or uptight lecturer.
So I am taking her class during COIVD and there are absolutely no lectures or online lectures. She only has 1 hour per week for questions. We have to learn completely online from the TB. She is barely involved with her students. She only offers an hour a week for questions. My tuition sure is paying off for her to sit and do nothing.
I took this class during COVID and it was a joke. There were no lectures or real recitations. The class was unbelievably easy because either the textbook software would give you the answer or they were a google search away. I finished the class with an A+ while not attending class once and maybe spending an hour a week on this course.
Almost all the answers to quizzes/tests can be found on quizlet. Easy A when taking it online.
Gulker is such an amazing professor. Her class is engaging and her lectures are phenomenal. Be prepared to participate and take good notes, but you shouldn't have a problem. I cannot recommend her enough. She really wants her students to learn the material and does an outstanding job teaching.
Dr. Gulker is easily my favorite professor at Purdue. She is passionate, knows what she is talking about, understanding, funny, and self-aware. Not a hard class if you show up, participate & take notes. Her social psychology background really helps when she teaches about stereotypes, bias, etc., and strategies to combat bias.
You can tell that Dr. Gulker is passionate about what she teaches; however, sometimes its random on how tough she grades. I received lower grades on quizzes even after taking notes, participating, and coming to class everyday (classmates agree with me as well). Overall, she cares about her students and the material, but can be tough on grades.
Horrible Professor. She grades so hard and is not understanding at all. Her navigating gender class is horrible and not interesting at all and she acts super nice but grades so hard. I got better grades in my real classes than this one. Putting effort in DOESNT even matter. Youll still get a bad grade.
requires attendance because shes scared nobody will go to her class, but her lectures are so useless that youre better off just looking at the textbook. she disregards sick days because she believes class is more important and offers a single day of makeup points for the semester. find a different prof for this class, thank me later.
She refuses to post lectures or notes because she thinks itll motivate students to come to class, so good luck if you miss any lectures. Her notes are almost useless and youll pretty much fail if you dont go to class. She also doesnt offer make up work in the event you are sick or unable to go to class. Def wish I switched professors.
Professor Gulker is a really enjoyable professor to be in class with. However when you take the exams it is basically a guessing game. I'd say about 50% isn't discussed in class so you have to hope for the best and expect to get participation every day to still pass the class.
this class is stupid easy but be prepared to want to smash your brain in. She requires attendance because I am certain no one would come otherwise. The material is basic common sense, but she thinks that she is insightful and blessing us with her knowledge every class. She will not shut up about her children.
The lectures are interesting and easy to follow. You need to read the chapters for each week, especially for exams. You have participation points each week so you need to go to class. If you can't make it to class for a good reason (i.e. sick, emergencies, mental health, etc.) they will allow you to do make up work as long as you ask. Good class!
Gives little to no guidance
I took this course during the first wave of COVID, so it was entirely online. All the work was independent, no lectures. I had higher hopes for the learning community, but that basically did not exist, even online. The tests were straightforward though.
Attendance is mandatory in this class. Tests make up a huge percentage of your grade and tests are difficult. She always talks about her family, and her lectures are sooo boring. You will learn more by reading the book than attending class. Time slows down when you are in her class. SHE DOESNT SHUT UP ABOUT HER FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely loved Dr. Gulker! She was super personable and was very entertaining. There is homework once a week so the courseload isn't overbearing. She does a good job at covering all the aspects of psychology she can in the short semester we have. She also is very fair come time for exams. Participation is mandatory, but some get dropped.
SHE SUCKS. Assignments not clear and wastes a lot of lecture time talking about nothing. Would never take again.
All tests were online, very easy class. The professor is very knowledgeable.
She made the exams open note after the first test to make it easier on us and collects participation but lets you drop four weeks worth. She keeps lectures interesting and posts her notes online for studying. Overall, the class wasn't difficult. She didn't go over all of the lecture slides in class, so reading her notes and the textbook is helpful.
Dr. Gulker was interesting at the very least. However, she made the class very easy with the tests being open note, and she was clear what she expected on the Annotated Bibliography. Expect to do homework, you really don't need to read the book but if it wasn't open note read the book. The reason for the 3 is just that it was just an average class.
Man I just love Jill. She is so nice, and you really gotta try to fail her class. She changes our exams to open note and is really funny in lecture and is open to messing around and us making jokes in the menti discussions. Her lectures were always a nice change of pace in the week.
Dr. Gulker was so fun and an easy to talk to professor. Loved this class and will be taking more that she teaches. Her lectures cover everything you'll usually see on the exams, but still recommend taking notes from the textbook.
This class is one that is very interesting, it briefly describes all of the different topics in psychology. All of the assignments are online and participation in the class is graded. Tests are open note and usually straightforward. The department requires participation in research studies to earn SONA credits, make sure to get these done asap.
Interesting introductory psych class. Very nice prof. Not too thrilled that attendance was mandatory (hence my B). Take it online if you can. Also the SONA requirement is ridiculous. For the uninitiated, you have to participate in about 7-8 hours worth of terribly conceived undergraduate psych research studies. Just a huge time suck.
Professor Gulker does a great job creating engaging and interesting lectures. The class is very heavy on lectures, and your personal notes will be most of what you use to study for exams. The class is slightly heavy on essays, but they don't take long, and the professor is not a super harsh grader. Attendance is mandatory, with 4 absences allowed.
The (online) tests were open-note, but it meant that you had to take a lot of notes (textbook & lecture). There were 14 participation grades for lectures but 4 are dropped. The SONA credit is pretty annoying because of limited experiment sign-ups but it was doable. The required semester-long paper also was really easy. Grading was fast as well.
Assignments and exams were easy if you put in the effort, however her lectures were impossible to want to attend. Only superficially talked about the material, spent most of the time talking about herself and her family. Attendance points are taken every lecture, only 4 are dropped. SONA requirements are crazy, but doable if you get them done early
I enjoyed Professor Gulker's class. Exams were easy as long as you took good notes (for us the exams were open note) and listened in class. Also she collects attendance points but she doesn't collect participation every day. I loved her anecdotes about psychological concepts, however she does talk about her kids a lot.
Gulker is a great lecturer. She explains things well and always takes time to answer students' questions. The first exam was proctored and the rest were not. In lecture, she uses Mentimeter to track participation so as long as you go to class you should do great.
She isn't bad, but the lectures were so boring. Attendance is mandatory, but if you ask she will send her notes out, so you don't have to take them. Get ahead start on the SONA credits. The first test was proctored, but rest were not. The notes make it seem that the test are so in-depth, but test really are examples and definitions
She made coming to class enjoyable. The class does not have homework and most of grade is just showing up to class.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! she is the nicest and most understanding teacher I have ever had here at Purdue. She is so funny too!! I wish I could take more classes with her!!
Dr. Gulker is my favorite professor I've had! The lectures were really interesting and fun, she engaged with the class a lot and took feedback seriously. Tests were open note and online, and there was no homework besides a semester project. You do need to show up because she takes participation but I always looked forward to coming to class.
Very easy - tests are online and open note, but definitely get the SONA credits done early. Her notes are very surface level but it's okay since tests are online. She could go way more in depth if she didn't talk about her kids / personal life so much. Overall easy class and she was very nice and personable.
If I was taking this class during a regular semester, it would be fine, but I'm taking it as a 4-week course. It seems she just tried to cram the 16-week class into 4 weeks instead of adapting the class. Requires about 5-6 hours of work a day just to keep up. I've already had 3 panic attacks trying to finish everything on time and it's week 2.
I LOVE Dr. Gulker. She makes content really easy to understand by using real world applications and by using students' participation. Her lectures are really easy to follow, and you'll do well as long as you keep track of notes. She also cares deeply about the wellbeing of her students and always puts YOU first. All tests are online.
Dr. Gulker has a great lecturing style, a fun personality, and clear communication. She provided extra study resources and information on what will be on exams. It is not hard to succeed, as long as you are willing to study a little bit and read the textbook.
Great professor. Explains very well in an engaging way. Speaks loud and clear, great voice and communication skills. The homework has many resources that help you along the way in case you do not understand a problem. All homework, quizzes, and exams are online. Wish I could have Dr. Gulker again, recommend her to everyone!
Great professor, super sweet. Exams are online, camera off which makes them easy. Participation points so go to lecture. Also a project, but no final exam.
This is my second class with Gulker and I'm even less impressed. She talks like an elementary school teacher. The final project is so broad and confusing even after getting help from the TA. On the rough draft I received full credit with minimal feedback, but was told to change my idea completely for the final. I hope to avoid her from now on.
I LOVED this class. Lectures were so entertaining, there is no homework in this class, no final, and only 3 exams. There are points for attendance but I never found myself struggling to go to lecture. This has been one of my favorite classes here. Tests can be a bit hard so make sure you study but otherwise you should have a great time!
Gulker is an amazing professor. Participation points are crucial to your grade so come to the lectures, but she makes them enjoyable. The material is fun to learn and no homework other than one project and 3 exams (no final). Exams are on Lockdown Browser, but if you study well you can easily get a good grade. I recommend this glass with her!
Class is not hard and the concepts are pretty basic. TA's are inconsistent too, their feedback for the project does not help you at all, and that's their job the entire semester. You have to show up to class to get the participation points because theres not a lot you are graded by. online exam which wasn't bad. overall class is ok, very boring
Clearly invested in her students' success, but for all her concern, her style is inconsiderate of different learning styles. Lecture attendance is mandatory, but discussions are superficial, and the content can be learned entirely via the textbook. Final project instead of an exam can be nice but works out to be a huge time sink. Not a big fan.
I liked the material and the professor's personality but there was a lot of miscommunication in the grading criteria. The rubrics never seemed to match what she actually wanted. Participation is required to get a good grade but sometimes she points out exam material. Exams were online using LockDown plus camera, I recommend reading the textbook.
This was my second time around with her, and she's consistently amazing. Lectures are mandatory but fun, and the class doesn't have homework. The exams need some studying and the project takes a good deal of work, but it's easy, so long as you seek help when needed. Overall, I highly recommend her!
She tries to make attempts to engage with the students but during those she goes on never ending tangents. Best believe she will mention how she hates her dog and her son has ADHD in EVERY class. She takes participation, so find a friend who goes to class and ask them to send you the google form link. Easy tests just do your hw and readings.
Mrs. Gulker is a good professor but her assignments are tedious and take up a lot of time. Make sure to pay attention in class for quizzes and show up for attendance (2 get dropped).
This class was super interesting and ended up being one of my favorites this semester. It was also extremely easy, the only reason I didn't end up with an A was because I missed one of the last assignments. The exams are online and super easy. Just go to class and do the assignments and you'll end up with an A.
She gives 3 homeworks that are time-consuming and stressful, with niche topics and vague rubrics. Grading is unclear and you get no feedback after spending 6+ hours on each. Despite a 20 person class, she didn't know any names and often discussed how her young children relate to gender norms. Overall the class is difficult and unrewarding.
This class was by far my favorite this semester. Lectures were super interesting. I was worried because I completely failed the first quiz, but after learning what to expect from the exams, I figured out how I needed to study to prepare and ended up getting As on the rest of the exams and 1 B. Read the textbook and go to class and you'll be fine!
To describe Gulker in one word, I would choose solid. Was this class revolutionary? No. But were there times I laughed or gained some insight, yes. For the prof, her rubrics are a bit wack and can knock off points for things not even mentioned but overall its not that hard. Seems willing to work with students and overall seems invested in the topic
This class was pretty decent and could be funny at times. There were only 2 quizzes, which were made to be pretty easy if you paid attention in class/took good notes. Assignments were long and tedious. She never gave clear feedback or honestly what she wanted to see from the paper, so I would just say follow the rubric as much as you can.
Lectures are enjoyable and the professor herself is a very nice person. However, the projects have nothing to do with the course content, are long and tedious, and are graded on a vague yet strict rubric. There are 2 quizzes that are very easy (as long as you attend lectures) but worth very little points compared to the projects. Mixed feelings.
The exams are a complete guessing game. She gives you a study guide and no matter how hard you study/read/go over notes half of the exam will be something that comes out of nowhere. I have personally gone to every class, read the book, and gone over every study guide and I was barely able to pass an exam👎🏻don't like meeting w TA? Don't take.
Her behavior overshadowed any positive aspects of the class. She created a hostile learning environment and made it difficult to feel comfortable participating in class by treating students inconsistently and unfairly. Exams are also ridiculous and aren't relevant to the lecture at all. The more classes I take with her, the more I feel belittled.
I'm not a psych major so I took this class as an elective. It ended up being one of my favorite classes. Her lectures are so entertaining and easy to understand. The exams are straightforward. There are very few homework assignments, and the workload is super light. I would recommend this class if you need an elective, or need to get a psych credit
I highly recommend Dr. Gulker! She's awesome- her lectures are fun, engaging, and easy to follow. As long as you show up to class, you'll do well.
Do not expect to pass this class. She makes things extremely hard for no reason. Even if you try to study or give it your all, you are bound to fail.
Prof. Gulker is by far one of the best professors I've had. Although the class is lecture heavy, I genuinely enjoyed going. She is a great lecturer and she makes class fun. Participation points are easy as long as you show up to class. Exams are online and proctored but the lowest exam score is dropped. She has a great attitude with students.
I have taken two of Dr. Gulker's classes; if I am scheduled for a third one, I am switching out. She takes forever to grade things (it is almost finals week, and I still have nothing in the gradebook for MGMT 294500), gives broad guidelines for upcoming assignments, and her grading is very strict. She is a nice person, just a terrible professor.
Dr. Gulker wasn't supposed to teach this class but took over last minute. I think she's a nice lady, but not a great professor. It's finals week and we still barely have any grades in, and her lectures are honestly pretty boring. A semester long group project that feels useless takes up a chunk of your grade, but other than that it's an easy course
I enjoyed her lectures. She was funny and made her lectures pretty easy. Only thing I would complain about is her exams were pretty difficult.
She a pretty good professor, most of her lectures were pretty entertaining and her class wasn't hard at all. It should be an easy A as long as you show up to class.
She's a very entertaining lecturer, and makes coming to class well worth the effort. You will need to do the readings to do well on the exams, but the questions are straightforward and rarely anything she hasn't warned you about. I didn't like her assignments that integrated AI, but she provided alternatives that took slightly more effort.
I liked her lectures. They were engaging and actually taught what was on exams. I didn't touch the textbook once the whole semester. Attendance is mandatory and she uses menti. The exams/quizzes are pretty hard, but if you look over the slides and use the study guide she provides they aren't too bad.
Truly one of the best classes I've ever taken. She makes class so entertaining and actually motivates me to learn. She does participation, but it's super easy stuff. Most of it was opinion based and as long as you submitted it in class you got full credit.
I've taken two classes besides this one with Jill, and this was the hardest class I have taken from her. Exams are incredibly hard, and it's best to start the study guide a week before the exam and reread the chapters before exams. Final project was practically rewriting the textbook. Not an easy A,
Be ready to have the most vague rubric and get back a randomly low grade without any explanation. This class is unnecessary yet Gulker grades so harshly for no reason. She pushed most communication onto the TA and won't deal with you if you ask for help.
I thought this class was very interesting and informative. She did talk about her kids quite a bit, but she was a very kind grader and it didn't take much for me to get an A. Make sure you pick good groups for the group projects.
