It is a pretty easy class. Make sure you go when new assignments are given, or you wont understand at all. No tests is great, just papers. She can be talked out of turn in dates by the whole class. Her grading is kinda hard however.
really bad
All you do is write papers, read short essays, and proofread fellow studnets papers. Only 2 to 3 students will get an A on a paper. She is a difficult grader. I don't believe I'm any better as a writer because of this class
Good teacher, likes to help students. She's a hard grader, but fun to talk to in class and likes to joke with the students. Laid back about when assignments are due. Ask her to help revise your papers and don't get offended if she insults your writing.
Pretty proud of herself. Talks bad about other schools and people. I do not think this is a good sign.
Dr. Havens is a really nice person and she at least tries to be helpful when you ask. However, she grades really hard and she makes you think your paper is really good, and then you end up not getting the grade you had anticipated.
Dr. Havens is a fun teacher to have in class. Very laid back and likes to joke around. The assignments are not that difficult but she tends to be unclear of what is expected of us and can be a tough grader. A's are not very common in this class.
I got a High B on every single paper and didn't work long on them at all. She does not really give As but it is really easy to get a B in her class if you do the assignment and turn it in on time!
If you want a B this is the teacher for you. Unless you plan on kissing her butt, and then maybe you'll get an A or maybe you won't! Most teachers will take in account how hard your tried or help improve, but not her. She is also full of herself.
Makes you do lots of busywork. Hard grader. Definately get her comments b4 you turn the final papers in and work on those. On the plus side the class was pretty laid back.
I made an A in her class- not too bad, but lots of writing of course. She's actually very interesting to talk to and gives helpful comments. A's are possible but not easy to get. Lots of revision and multiple drafts for every paper.
I had her for Modern Medievalism. Day to day class is a breeze, but watch out for the papers! She is a TOUGH grader and you will work hard outside of class reading and writing endlessly, but she is a great professor.
Tell you exactly what is going on (although you're not always clear) and what is needed but lots of reading and writing. Grades to her expectation. Tough A but B is do-able. Had a good experience.
Willing to work with you. Very nice. A lot of reading but easy classes.
Really nice professor. I goofed off everyday in class, did the papers and got a B+. She doesn't give A's for some reason. One of the better teachers to take for Soph.Comp.
She does give A's, I got an A on every paper. She's very helpful, very clear on what you have to do. Class is sometimes boring, but there's only 4 papers, so it's not that hard. Her encouragement made me go into Journalism!
She is way too hard for Sophomore Comp! When you revise a paper you expect to get a better grade, right?Wrong! You'll get the same grade. Her attitude is stank and so is her laugh. She gives a massive end of the year group proposal that has to be 10 pages AND you have to give a presentation. 2 damn much
She may have made you want to be a journalist, butI'm a journalism minor and it's a completely different style of writing. She sux, and if she's grading an english paper like a journalism one then she's in the wrong dept. She never helped me, even though I was in her office every day. Good person, bad teacher.
Such and Interesting Class! i hope everyone can take this Harry Potter based siminar! Especially if you Love HP! She is very helpful, i got Bs on all my papers, and wrote them the night before everytime!
Dr. H. is really nice and very interested in her teaching. The only semi-difficult part of the class were the papers. You do a lot of writing but go in for help and use the writing center. In class all you do is talk about Harry Potter and other Hero stories like the Matrix and Shrek etc. Recomended
Okay, grades papers differntly. Easy B.
She is a good teacher, I had her for Harry Potter seminar and she was obviously intrested. She is a hard grader, but if you go to her for help, she is really nice. Also she lets you re-do the papers and mine always went up a full letter grade. I would recommend her, but do not expect it to be a blow off

I love Dr. Havens! Its certainly not a blow off class, but if you've already read the books you can get by without reading. She doesn't give reading quizzes, which is nice and has a passion for what she does. She a pretty fair grader on the essays, and allows revisions for all of them! I really recommend her, and shes always there to help you!
Engaging prof if you like Harry Potter or movies she's seen. But if you want read anything above sixth grade reading level, good luck.
I had her for the Harry Potter seminar, and she was really interested in the subject but at times the lectures were boring. Her grading is tough, but she gives a handout that fully guides you through the assignment and answered all of my questions. While she is a hard grader, shes really helpful when you meet with her and lets you do revisons.
Dr. Havens is very helpful and lets you revise all your papers. She is really interested in what she is talking about and was always really helpful outside class. I'd definately reccomend her.
She is a good teacher but her grading is terrible. Her grades are opinion based and don't accurately represent your knowledge of the material. Even if you read every book and passage you are will probably make a mediocre grade on the test. She is extremely stubborn about her grades, so don't even bother trying to talk to her about them.
I LOVE Dr. Havens. She is a very very intelligent lady. Her class requires that you do all the work and pay attention during discussion, but its not too hard. Get on her good side and she will help you a lot! Let her know that you are trying, and ask questions. She is a really great person to know on TCU campus, and very intelligent.
Dr. Havens is great! I enjoyed her Major British Writers class. Classes are mostly discussion based and they were interesting. She gives 1-2 quizzes per book that are kind of hard, but her tests are not bad at all. She's a fair grader. Overall, a very nice lady and I'd recommend her.
Havens is AMAZING! Anyone who has anything bad to say about her didn't try to do well. One of my favorite professors at TCU. I took her 3 different times and I'm not even an english major or minor. Get to know her, she's a cool lady.
I took her for Major British Writers and I loved it! She is a very good teacher! She does have pop quizzes but they are easy. Gives many opportunities for extra credit. Her tests aren't bad if you have read and stuided. I loved this class and you can def. make an A!
Dr. Havens is very knowledgeable, however, she is also full of herself. Be prepared to hear her discuss her experiences at Oxford and to be told that your academic experience is not up to par with hers. Her comments are a bit strange. Overall, you can learn a lot from her class. If you are taking an upper level course, you will not get an A.
Dr Havens is very knowledgeable about the subject she teaches - she actually makes Brit Lit interesting! She does give pop quizzes that require you to actually read the text not just SparkNotes it. However she also offers extra credit opportunities. Overall highly recommended, especially if you hate Brit Lit - she will make it your favorite class.
Don't take this class if you aren't going to read. The pop quizzes (at least one a week usually) are too hard just to spark note. Class can be boring but she definitely knows her stuff. I got an A (I bombed a few quizzes but she drops the lowest 2) Lots of extra credit opportunities on test which are not too bad!
Major British Writers requires a lot of time to read... But Spark Notes is probably just as good. Havens gives pop quizes maybe every other week but she's an easy-grader. Attendance counts as part of the grade. The class is not too bad... But you have to read and study for an A.
Of all the English professors, she's my least favorite. She's not helpful at all, I could give more information but if you work with her, I'm sure you'll figure it out. Her class is easy, but the tests are far too long for the 50 mins you have to complete it. Not personable either. Deal with her if you must, but try to avoid her.
I took her Major British Writers and there was a lot of reading however Dr. Havens is such a good professor. She takes attendance and it goes towards your grade and she gives pop quizzes. Test are long with passage analysis but if you read the books she assings youll do fine!! I made an A and I used sparknotes sometimes. Good teacher. Very NICE!
Dr. Havens is a great, very helpful teacher. I took her Major British Writers class and got an A. You just need to read, use sparknotes, and do any extra credit she gives. Also, TALK A LOT. She loves that. But her final is hard, so try to opt out if you can.
Really nice professor. She picks favorites, but if you go to class and are active in the discussions she will like you. Gives pop quizzes. The reading is absolutely necessary, so keep up with it. She is an easier grader so as long as you show some understanding you will be fine. Tests are kind of difficult and require major knowledge of the text.
Not like your stereotypical English professor. Teaches in a very clear and approachable way - you won't have to do any deconstruction or other nonsense. You'll have to read a lot for quizzes but it's worth it - her class discussions are the best I've ever seen. One of the few English classes that might actually help you enjoy a work more afterword.
Dr. Havens is an excellent professor, though don't go in expecting an easy grade. If you attend class every day, do your readings, and get your papers in on time (with a fair amount of effort in each one, of course), you can get an A in her class.
Dr. Havens is honestly one of the best professors I've had throughout college. Her in-class lectures are really interesting, and she actually can motivate you to participate. She isn't the most timely grader by any means, but with a lot of dedication to reading you can definitely make a good grade in this class.
This class was interesting at times and REALLY boring at others. Dr. Havens is a really knowledgeable professor. She has a passion for the literature which shows in her teaching. My only criticism is she is a really slow grader. Make sure you do the extra credit! Good class, I recommend.
Only 4 grades for the entire semester! The semester is now over and she still hasn't posted 2 of the grades or given any feedback. First grade wasn't posted until AFTER the drop date. Nice lady but very spacey, disorganized, and assumes a lot of prior knowledge in literature. Went to her for help mid semester and she was very vague and unclear.
Fable and fantasy is an extremely interesting class. Havens is very nice, helpful, passion about her teaching. Her tests are not so clear, she change the format of every test. Go to class and you will be fine. A is possible
Awful teacher. Assigns 40-50 pages of reading for every class. Didn't specify format of tests until two days before the test. Gives eight pop quizzes that are ten short answer questions. When she teaches in class, you learn a lot. Unfortunately, tests and quizzes focus mainly on reading rather than in-class lectures. Avoid at all costs
The most difficult class I've ever taken. At least 50 pages of reading, not fun reading, read twice and take notes reading, before every class, 3 times a week. Pop quizzes, that feel more like exams, every week, 10 questions, short answer. Exams are difficult, require extensive knowledge and understanding of the readings. Attendance is for a grade
I was super interested in Mythology. It's Greek, then Celtic, then Norse mythology, so NOT JUST GREEK! There was a lot of reading, 30-60 pages per class. Pop quizzes were easy if you read. Tests were mostly writing, theres a list of stories she'll use on the test. This professor was very passionate and fun, but took 1 month to return test grades...
A word to the wise: don't take this class if you have a life outside of school work. You're reading 40-50 pages for every class period, and these aren't easy stories to comprehend. 10 pop quizzes, two tests, and a final. Dr. Havens is willing to help you out, but this is a TOUGH class and requires a lot of work on your own time.
Dr. Havens is super nice. The projects are pretty lengthy and make you think, but they are doable. Make sure to read, and participate in class. She gives great help if you ask for it, too.
I took Dr. Haven's "Fable and Fantasy" class where we analyzed Game of Thrones. Best english class I have ever taken. Tests and quizzes were not hard if you study/read. Her class is interesting.
This was the best course that I took during my undergrad career. Imagine taking a class on your favorite TV serious/ book series. If you love Game of Thrones and you want to learn about the history behind it, you might as well get credit for it. I would recommend this class to anyone familiar with the series.
I loved Dr. Havens! She's a pretty cool person. I took her for the Game of Thrones class. Interesting and an easy A, I would definitely recommend for an LT or a humanities credit.
Professor Havens is one of the best Professors i've ever taken. I took her Game of Thrones class and it was a ton of fun. It is a tough class however, so be prepared to read, A LOT. She does give quizzes around every 2 weeks (unannounced) but if you did the reading you generally have no problem passing them. Gives extra credit as well!
It is definitely a pleasure to take Dr. Haven's class. I learn a lot. I suggest taking this class if you love reading. She always welcomes the students' ideas and comments.
She is a cool professor, but is a tough grader when it comes to essays. There isn't too much homework, but she allows you to make multiple revisions on the essays.
She's a nice woman, just a tough grader. She's very specific about what she wants in a paper and grades according to the rubric, so follow it. Ask questions in class on exactly what she wants in a paper and run your ideas past her because she gives pretty good feedback and where to go with the paper. Also allows corrections on first 2 papers.
I love Jill-she is the best & clearly loves what she does. She has a good system. There are 2 exams (the 1st one is challenging & the 2nd one is all writing but you can easily get an A). You don't have to take the final if you have an A. 2 extra credits, pop quizzes (only things I got a B on in the class). Never read any of the books. Go to class.
The game of thrones class is the best English class you can take if you like the show or medieval literature. The books assigned are not hard, and usually interesting. There are pop quizzes but just do the readings and you will get A's on them. If you do the work and read on time you will be fine, don't skip because every absence is points off.
Lots of outside reading. Quizzes and overall discussion make the class WORTH IT. If you have watched GOT you will thrive. You get divided into Houses on Friday for discussion. Tests are long and hard, but going to class and reading prepares you. Best class I have taken in college.
Very reading heavy but super interesting. The house presentations are fun and easy. I hadn't even watched Game of Thrones and did well in her class. Lectures are interesting. Always be ready for pop quizzes over the readings. Tests aren't bad if you do the readings and study the lecture notes. Very fun class!
One of my favorite professors! I took her Ghost Story class. Dr. Havens cares a lot about her students and helps out as much as she can. There's plenty of opportunities for extra credit plus an easy group project at the end of the semester to give you a grade boost. SPEAK UP IN CLASS & she'll like you even more!!
I took her for Honors Lit & Civ: The Story of Troy. Very interesting class which tied various classical texts to the Trojan War. Shes a great professor that promotes great class discussion and cares about her students. The essays are hard, especially the second one, but still doable. Id recommend taking Dr. Havens for any LT you may need to take.
You have to get a lot of books for this class. It's a lot of reading, but all you do is go to class and talk about it in student-led discussions. You are split into groups and make questions to ask the class about the previous reading. Very easy. Only two essays and a pair presentation for the final. Really nice lady, but she's a slow grader.
You have to read a lot because it is an English class, but it's overall pretty easy.
So much reading and pop quizzes on the details
Topic of this class was obscure. Professor havens' Quizzes are harder than the tests and worth just about the same amount of points. Whether or not you read these quizzes are still very hard. As a Junior this is the only class that is giving me trouble anymore and would do anything you can to avoid it. Would not recommend Professor Havens to anyone
Really nice and responds quickly. A LOT of reading (it is a college lit class...), the quizzes can be tough, even if you do the reading, and the readings can be tough to understand/a lot of information to remember. While she is a tougher grader, she is very clear in her rubrics (can be good and bad).
PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!! ITS SO TOUGH AND NOT WORTH IT. SHE IS A VERY TOUGH GRADER. THIS CLASS AND HER ATTITUDE are not good. Nothing about game of thrones, just boring medevial lit. Beware.
ENG intro to fiction (ghost story)was a super easy class but very boring. She "requires" attendance but no one ever showed up unless it was for quiz day. Dr. H is super sweet and has a lot of amazing stories, but there is nothing motivating to actually want to make you show up. Overall pretty easy A, just a lot of reading and 2 papers+group project
At first I didn't like professor havens, however, after a few weeks in the class, I started to really like her. She's really enthusiastic about the stuff she teaches and will work with you if something happens. There's a lot to read but it's not too bad most of the time.
Very nice lady, however, this should not be a freshman level class. Her pop quizzes are ridiculous and try to trick you, 25 questions all short answer. Some of the readings are quite confusing while others are very easy. Essay exams are very easy, however, you are only given 24 hours to complete them. There's better classes out there.
This class is really easy but the teacher makes it hard. The pop quizzes are very hard as well as some readings. The class consist of a couple of online test and a massive group project that the whole class is revolved around. For what should be a fun and engaging topic this teacher makes it super boring and too serious.
You can tell she truly cares about literature and wants us to engage and learn along side her. There is a lot of ready and the pop quizzes are tough so make sure you read, but other than that the 2 tests are papers that she well prepares and lays out for you. As well as group/ house presentations.
This class is very reading and quiz heavy. Prepare for a quiz every week, usually on Wednesdays. I read every assignment and would still get 50% on quizzes. They are so specific and impossible to do well on. The 2 unit tests are 3 page essays open for 24 hours. Also prepare to give group presentations in class twice a semester. Enjoyed this class!
I took Dr. Haven's ghost story class. Super interesting content but kind of reading heavy for a core class. You have to do the readings for pop quizzes that happen pretty often and make up a good part of your grade. A nice lady but I P/NC the class. They put a lot of athletes in the class for a reason - super fun just a bit of reading
its so BORING. heavy reading. be careful, pop quizzes typically on wednesdays. Dr. Havens is nice but the class may be as boring as watching paint dry. i took it because it sounded fun, but it could be the opposite of that. and plus the pop quizzes suck. The class is semi easy.
The Intro to Fiction Ghost Story class was very enjoyable and Dr. Havens is a very kind & down-to-earth person. It's an English class so there are readings which you will have to do for the pop quizzes. Plus, there's a large group project at the end of the semester. But if you come to class, do the readings, and actively participate you'll be good.
Tests are 2 open note essays, 8 pop quizzes (2 are dropped - usually got 90s..the lowest I got was a 66 and I didn't read that time so they aren't bad), and a group project. The group project was fun but I am worried she will grade it hard. She's hilarious & so nice. An easy LT credit but you definitely have to put in a little work for an A.
Havens is so sweet. She's really passionate about her classes and truly cares about her students. I took the ghost stories class and the reading was often really good and usually wouldn't be longer than 25 pages (and I hate reading). You have to write 2 papers and she grades them tougher than I was expecting, but it didn't kill my grade.
Havens is by far one of the most challenging professors in the English department, all I have to say is if your taking her for core don't please I warn you. Havens is made more for those that are actual English majors and minors, she's a tough grader, but her teachings are better for us that are in the department.
Do not get me wrong she is a very passionate teacher and cares a lot, but this class (I am taking the ghost stories one) should ONLY be taken by english majors. The readings are so long, attendance is absolutely mandatory, her quizzes/tests are impossible even if you read, and UNDER NO circumstance should you take it for a core credit.
Lots and lots of reading, and random pop "quizzes". I did the reading consistently and still got 70s on the quiz, and I wasn't the only one that did this. Big, 2-day tests also make up the majority of your grade, which is extremely unreasonable for a core credit. Think again before taking the Ghost stories class as part of your core.
Only two exams so STUDY, lots of readings but she is a fun teacher and loves to talk with students. Content is not as interesting as you would think, but it is still cool to learn about.
This class was stupid. the class started with 30 people and dropped to 7 by the end. if you miss one detail in the many readings due everyday, you will fail the pop quizzes.
Currently at midway of semester; do not take her. Shes super hard for a core english credit, there are way better options. Too much reading, several pop quizzes. Quizzes make up majority of your grade. Unless you like to read 40 pages, don't take.
Dr. Havens is a great teacher and cares a lot about her students. There is a lot of reading, homework, and beware of pop quizzes (even though she will tell you when they are generally coming and she will drop your lowest two quiz grades). The class is tough, but if you put in effort, you can get an A.
I really like Dr. Havens, but wouldn't take this class again. Pop quizzes most weeks, HARD TESTS, lots of reading. She is very passionate but not the easiest class to do well in, even when studying. English class but heavy on medieval history.
So boring and so hard for literally no reason. The material makes no sense and there's 50 pages of reading after every class, and you'll probably still do bad on pop quizzes even if you read. Take someone else for core.
Yes, there is a lot of reading, but she is genuinely a good teacher and if you read the books and listen in class, you will be completely fine
