She is a great teacher!!!!!!!
She was a great teacher. Make sure you do the reading, otherwise you're in trouble. She was friendly and helpful. She made a boring subject fun; she like to have debates!I would recommend her.
This class is very easy, this teacher makes it fun and interesting. At certain times, she will take her time to talk to you and give advices to do better in the class. My suggestion, take her!
She is a great teacher and makes learning extremely fun. She is highly recommended to have as a teacher.
Favorite professor so far. She makes the subject interesting. The papers she assigned were long but she lets you pick your own topic and is very helpful. Would definitely recommend.
Great professor. Makes class fun and interesting. Would take her again for any class.
Great professor very helpful
Professor Humell is about as good as it gets. She is fantastic in every aspect of teaching. For all the future teachers, you should strive to be like Prof. Humell.
I feared taking Comp but Prof. Hummel is made of *awesome* and made it a great experience. Her class debates are fun. She has 4 papers in which the amount of pages increases slightly and for the in class essays she tells you the topic so you research it and can be ready. Acheivable A! Take her! :)
i was worried about taking comp but i honestly look forward to this class every day. she is awesome.
Shes pretty funny and has a great sence of humor. the only problem i have is that she never tells us when things are due. so well have a quiz and wont even know it. or we needed something for class we didnt know what were saposed to bring. a little cunfusing
Pretty awesome teacher. If you do everything she asks for, you'll get an A-B.
I love this teacher. She is witty and has a fun class.
She is a great professor! She explains everything very well and makes the class fun and easy. I've recommended her to all of my friends.
she is funny, down to earth, and very helpful. her assignments are pretty fun since she lets you choose what to write about, as long as it's in the boundries of her assignment. i recomend her to everyone!
She is a great teacher, very outspoken and good sense of humor..she lend me a book, when i didnt have one
I recommend this professor to everyone! She is smart, funny and very helpful.
Tough professor, but she makes class interesting. If you want a hard English class- this is the professor. She isn't very helpful and is rude in her emails, but she is pretty funny!
Excellent teacher. Very relevant to today. Kept class fun and interesting.
Professor Hummel is awesome! Super funny and helpful, I would definitely recommend her. Keep in mind there's a few essay's to be done, but if you try your hardest, you'll do just find! Good luck
She is a very goood professor, but there were wayyyyy to many papers ! WEll at least it felt that way, we had to write 4 total but it felt as if we never stopped. Once we finished one paper we were on to the next one. But its a simple class just hated writing all those papers. I would recommend it anyways.
Prof Hummel was awesome. Its a writing class so yea after one essay is done by the next class your started on the next one but shes's helpful and willing to help you and work with you if your willing to do the same. Def reccommend her!
Tough Professor! She has stated that only 1 student on 1 occasion has ever recieved a 100% on a paper in all her years of teaching. Although she's funny and makes class fun. 4 papers due, 1st is 2-4 pages and the last is 8 -10 pages. Standard Comp 2.
Prof Hummel is friggin awesome!! It is not the easiest class but with focus and attention to detail you can earn an A. She's funny to the point of entertaining and understanding if you need assistance. Be in class and be aware of due dates, which are obviously printed on her syllabus, and boom .. your done.
Very helpful. A lot of work for a summer class but that's your own choice. Standard Comp 1 class as far as papers are concerned. Really helps you understand how to write for future classes.
Professor Hummel trys to be firm on things but she has her week spots and she is very far to notice that most of the class didn't understand so she grades something a little lighter. I took the Summer class so it was a lot of papers in a short amount of time. But, that is in an summer classes. She was always clear on her paper topics and informatio
A hard class for summer because there are 4 essays in 6 weeks, but she is a great teacher! She grades fairly and lays it all out for you so you know what to expect. The quiizzes are a bit hard, but they are always about the assignments. She tells you what will be on the midterm and final, and you get to choose your essay topics! Great professor.
Very up-beat teacher! Very clear on her assignments. Good class as long as you do the reading and her assignments.Lots of writing, but it's an intensive writing class. Easy A or B!
Ms. Hummel was a very helpful teacher! Her sense of humor made the class fun. There were a few class debates, 4 papers, and several quizzes. As long as you are prepared and know your material you should pass this class! She is very helpful and will stay after with you if you need it. She treats everyone as equals. This class was great!
This teacher is the best! Go put her on your schedule right now! She's one of those people that you want to have a bond with outside of the classroom. Her sense of humor is funny and her teaching is on point. My writing improved after her class. All comments saying she is biased are wrong: she's absolutely fair, and awesome. Can't wait for 1102 :)
She's quite interesting and funny as well. She will keep you awake that's for sure. the discussions and quizzes were fairly easy just STUDY, its not much to read or study, just have to be determine. You can get an A or B easily if you do what she wants to the best of your ability. The paper topics will get you thinking!
She is very funny and she is a good teacher. She assigned four papers throughout the whole semester, all differing in length, but she does give plenty of time to write them. Read the book when she assigns you to read or else you'll face the consequences.
She is one of the worst teachers I've had. She gives test that no one would know the answer to (random authors in stories we read). Isn't lenient at all and talks down about Religion. Very disrespectful! Don't take her!
I loved her class! She is incredibly helpful. If you ever need anything her office is always open, she never treats you like you're stupid, and she works with you to get you to pass. She is funny and so nice! Loved her so much, I am taking her again this semester. Her papers are easy if you put in some time, and the quizzes are almost non existent.
By far my favorite professor, especially for edison. If you are a student who makes the effort to go to class, do the work expected and LISTEN - you will do well in her class. She is very nice and funny. My writing skills improved immensely suing my two semesters with her as well. I highly suggest taking her class and putting in the work.
She is an awesome teacher, I have her right now and she is awesome! If you have a hard time in her class its solely because you don't apply yourself. Very helpful, smart, and FUNNY!
great professor. gives out paper extensions if emailed before the turn in date, without penalty.it would be wise to READ THE SYLLABUS. i really did enjoy her class, upbeat, and funny.
The final was so irrelevant to the class. basically left up to you to read the textbook that doesn't even make sense. she can be funny sometimes. she HAS to have control and its annoying she needs to get over herself. and she made us write way more than what was required. 4 long papers and 2 other short essays
She is, by far, the better of my professors! She's very strict, but understandably so. We are all adults, and are treated as such! Her keen sense of humor lightens up the stresses of Composition requirements. I definitely plan on taking her classes as I advance. I seriously recommend her if you don't mind a wonderful professor!
Not a good professor to take if your not very good at writing. She is strict when it comes to grading a paper and it will be a miracle if you get an A no matter how good of a paper you might feel that you wrote. She makes you do a lot of reading from the book and makes you take quizzes after. She is very demanding and barely teaches. Not good.
She is really my favorite teacher ever. She was so helpful and caring, but I learned a lot. It isn't an easy class, but I think starting with her has helped my writing so much in college. Don't take her if you are lazy and don't go to class, you get what you put in and she will help you become a much better writer if you put in the time.
Great professor. Her class isn't easy, but she is super helpful and she makes class interesting. My writing improved so much because of her. I would absolutely recommend her.
One of the best teachers I have had! Took her class for both comp one and two. Her class is fun and enjoyable and I normally hate English classes but I loved hers
I sign up for this class because it was a morning class. The first day she made it clear and let you know what she expect and what she don't expect. At first I was going to drop her but I am happy I stayed. She is helpful and not as hard as she make you believe. Also a great teacher, you learn in her class if you want to or not. Good Professor!
Professor Hummel is a super nice professor. She lectures in class but they are never boring and make sure you take notes because you are allowed to use them on her quizzes. She is engaging and passionate. Her grading is very fair. Every time you get an essay back you always get feedback and how you can improve your essays. Lots of work=a good grade
Professor was wonderful(: her humor definitely made the class go by and it's an easy course. Do the readings because there are (possible) quizzes on Fridays, but don't worry they are open note.
A LOT OF WRITING . READING . overall a lot of work but she is a very nice person and is willing to help you.
Great teacher!! i love her class. She's funny and she is a fair grader. she will help you with anything. There are 4 major essays. some quizes on Friday. DO THE READINGS AND TAKE NOTES. they will help you with your essay. Definitely my first choice teacher for COMP 2.
She is a very tough grader -- usually only 2-3 As per essay per class. Tons of long essays. She can be condescendingrude sometimes but overall is willing to help and explain. She will try to push her liberal views during lectures -- don't take her if you can't handle that. The reading quizzes are nigh impossible but open note. Get the textbook.
Professor Hummel is a tough grader but is also amiable. She is respectful to her students provided they are respectful to her. She also adds pleasant humor to her lectures.
She is a very nice teacher, who cares a lot about her students and is very enthusiastic about teaching. I loved her class and am taking her again for COMP 2!!!
The worst teacher ever don't take her she do not respect her students at all
Directions for essays were unclear and changed often so the class got confused and frustrated. Lectures were power points and chatter about her personal views on politics. Do not disagree with anything she says or else! Very tough grader. Be ready to work your butt off for a C in her class.
Great teacher but a very tough grader.
Apparently if you turn in work early it goes to the make up folder which takes her years to grade. That's about my only problem.
Hummel is a funny person and is very charismatic when you first meet her, but she is very specific. If you do something wrong she will not accept your papers. She is a very tough grader and is not very much help. She only helps you if you are in good standing in the class. She grades on whether you attend class so do not miss!
She is a really good teacher and she does care about her students. Sometimes she can get an attitude if you try to tell her how to do something. She does try to push her views on you a bit but really she is a good teacher and I will take her for comp 2.
Great professor. Knows what she is doing. Gives a well amount of time to prepare and complete essay assignments. There is some reading homework that she randomly quizzes on, but it is not difficult. She requires your attendance to class. Overall great class and I would recommend.
I went to every class, turned in every assignment, studied for every test, and still didn't pass this class. Professor Hummel is an awesome teacher, she is just such a tough grader it sucks. I put so much effort into this class and still failed. If you had a bad Comp. 1 teacher or simply don't have a strong Comp.1 background, don't take this class.
Let me just say that Mrs. Hummel was the best professor I've ever had. This is not a hard class if you just participate in class discussions and do your work. If you have any questions on the essay assignments, just go to office hours and she will be happy to help. She's hilarious and makes lectures fun. I would definitely recommend her.
If you talk with her she will work things out with you if you're really trying your best. She's an awesome teacher and I recommend you to take her class.
She's the nicest teacher I've ever had, she's 100% at feedback and helping you with any questions on topics or papers. She's very understanding and will sit down and help you work on your essay in order for it to meet standards. She's quirky and really works to gauge your attention while teaching thoroughly, just give effort. Definitely recommend!!
Amazing
You can get 'A's in all your papers and yet get a 'C' in the class. She wants you to turn in so many things before the papers, and all of those things are graded. If you miss a rough draft workshop, you get an 'F' on the paper. There is a Mid-Term and a final that together are worth 35% of the grade. Do not miss attendance and do NOT be late.
Professor Jill Hummel's class is a must. She will help you learn, grow as a writer, and she will be there if you need help. In order for you to pass do what you have to do like make notes from your readings (for pop quizes and to know what is going on in class), complete your assignments on time, and show up to class. Hands down, amazing professor!
Very interesting class.
This professor was okay for intro to lit. Just graded very harshly.
Very difficult grader on papers
She is kind & passionate about teaching. However, she does not recognize that you have a life outside of her class, so if you have a family or are taking any other difficult classes I do not recommend her. She will absolutely help you become a better writer, however her class is difficult, almost takes her job too seriously, could be discouraging
Professor Hummel is a phenomenal professor. She is super caring and you will grow as a writer. I definitely recommend this class. Our class became a bit flustered because of Hurricane Irma in the Fall of 2017, but overall I learned a lot. I would for sure take her class.
Hummel is a brilliant Professor. I took her class for Comp I / Comp II. I have so much admiration for her. She is a rebel, genuine, unique, caring, funny and an amazing human being! I would highly recommend her class. Stay on top of your reading and pay attention to her detailed feedback on your papers. She is no nonsense. I admired that in her!
She's not a terrible teacher but takes things far too personal. You can tell her emotions get the best of her. She shows up to class in a fake happy mood sometimes, and it comes out in her lecturing. If she likes you, you'll do well. If she doesn't, you better do great work or your grade will take a hit. If you can, choose another professor for Eng
She gives a homework load that feels impossible to keep up with. She is almost completely inaccessible to reach outside of class (have to send a message 3 times to be seen). She assigns readings and gives quizzes on it but you will still fail even if you have done the copious amounts of reading unless you know details about the author.
I took Prof. Hummel for comp 1 2 & she's truly the best. She gives you a lot of assignments, but they are always short & easy A's which can boost your grade if you don't do well on the essays. Essay topics have always been very interesting & fun to research & write about. Always show up to class on time and read what she assigns & you'll pass.
I passed with an A in her Comp 1 class Fall 2017. She did well at going over our essays. She also had us peer review each other's essays. However, she said that students would not pass unless they passed their third essay.
Amazing professor. So nice and personable. She is a tough grader but she does give you outlines for every essay(which are very clear). Midterm and final werent hard. Pop quizzes were just on readings that are all on the syllabus. She follows the syllabus nicely. She cares about your grade and will email you pretty quick if you have any concerns.
Such a good professor! As long as you do the readings and take notes you'll great. Interesting essay topics. Lots of small assignments that help boost your grades.
I took her class Spring 2019 b/c of the great reviews. I dreaded walking into her class. She gave pointless pop quizzes to test if we did the reading, but I always read the reading and never knew the stupid answer to her pop quizzes b/c it was a specific question. She does pick favorites! She didn't like me and my grade reflected. Don't take her!
She is fine. I tried very hard in the class, but her quizzes are very specific, lectures are delightful, and the class was fun. However, she is a very tough grader. She almost seems to have an attitude to some students. Not for everyone.
Must attend class, especially on days rough draft is due, or it is an automatic F. She is very strict. Although she offers help, you can tell she doesn't like you bothering her. Emotions do show in lectures. Quizzes are hard, Gives so much work. Won't accept late work. Difficult professor, like a high school teacher, tbh. She is nice though.
Love this professor!! Although it is true she is a tough grader, if you pay attention to the feedback she gives you and actually implement it into your papers, you should do well. I got a C on my first paper and after that got As on the other two. My word of advice is to definitely take her if you put hard work in.
One of my favorite professors at FSW. She's caring, respectable, and takes her job seriously. Three essays per semester but she provides LOTS of feedback to help you improve. There are also a bunch of little assignments to help boost your grade. If you put the effort in you will excel in this class. You can even use notes on pop quizzes!
She tends to be very nit picky, will have you resubmit an assignment until it is what she wants. Lectures tend to be boring and dragged out. She does not let class out early every besides a test day.
Professor Hummel was a very harsh grader. She stated in the beginning of the semester that it is very hard to get an A in her class and that most people wont. She assigns a lot of assignments and is a very strict teacher. I would not recommend taking her class unless you are looking for a challenge.
If you want to actually learn something or if you plan on transferring to a university, you should take Professor Hummel. Her lectures are amazing, I've never been bored in her class. She's funny and nice, but she will make you work for a good grade. If I had to take another comp class I would definitely take her again!
Worst professor ever. She has no intention of helping you at all. She wants you to fail no matter how hard you try. Honestly people like her should not be allowed to teach. If you think about taking her class, do yourself a favor and DONT. Amid this pandemic she made no effort to alleviate things for her students but instead made it miserable.
Great professor! Professor Hummel cares about her students, so she wont just hand out an easy A. She will engage you, listen to you, encourage you, and help you to become successful in higher level courses. She always keeps it real and even went out of her way to be supportive after we switched to online/Zoom classes due to the pandemic.
Dr. Jill Hummel is a good professor. She makes you work for your grade. She is a very tough grader, but it helps you learn and grow as a person. Her personality makes the class enjoyable. I recommend taking this professor if you are wanting to learn how to write good papers for years to come.
Dr. Hummel is passionate about literature and it shows by how this course is taught. Expect multiple readings per week, discussions and major essays throughout the semester. If you have difficulty discerning emotions, be aware that she's sarcastic and still wants you to succeed. She's absolutely brilliant- if I stayed, I would have taken her again.
Doctor Hummel is a fantastic professor. I rated her a level 4 difficulty because it says "makes you work for it"; and that is absolutely correct. The course load is completely doable along with 3 other classes I am also enrolled in. She gives amazing feedback that you can apply in future assignments for a satisfactory grade.
The professor is not easy, but you will learn a ton if you take her classes. The lessons really build my critical thinking in arguments.
Professor Hummel cares for her students. Attendance is mandatory however, she will accept a reasonable excuse. There's a lot of essays but she gives good feedback. Class discussions are fun and she talks about real world problems. She makes you work for the grade you want but it's nothing too hard.
Don't take this professor if you value your grade. Tough grader, and immature for an older woman. She acts like a child throughout class and acts the same when grading. You can do an assignment 5 times trying to do what she's asking and still get a 0, I filed a grievance and the Dean did nothing so I'm going to fail the semester.
She would take weeks to grade papers and when she did she would nitpick everything and take off points for the littlest things. The final is super easy and the paper topics she has are fine but she is a very slow grader and harsh too.
This professor is very political and stubborn. It is her way or the high way. If you submit assignments on time and show up to class though, it is not hard to pass with a decent grade.
Although this professor is a harsh grader, I would strongly recommend taking her if you want to better your writting skills. She has her days like everyone else but she is a great teacher that tries her absolute best.
Dr. Hummel is a fantastic professor. I learned a lot from her class. There are 3 essays, and you have plenty of time to work on them. If you fall behind or need clarification, she is more than happy to assist during office hours. It is stressful at times, but ultimately it is worth it if you put the work in.
I enjoyed taking her class. The workload was not bad, with the same structure every week. She is definitely a tough grader but as you continue to write papers, her feedback is useful. No book is required.
. In her Women of Literature class, she was preaching positive feminism, but loves to judge her students. I recommend the class, just not her. She comes with a lot of work and with that work a lot of extra and unneeded attitude. Would not take her again.
great prof! not good for people who want an easy grade. she is a real challenge, but helps you academically. extends due dates, but attend class and read, read, read!
if you take her women's literature class i can just tell you: be ready to READ and analyze everything. her class was really interesting. if she feels like the class is not doing the readings, she will give in-class writing assignments, so, be prepared! the textbooks are a must (even tho they are quite expensive to rent)
Harsh grader but a fantastic professor.
If you are good with English/writing this class will be easy. 3 major essays which you work on slowly through weeks and an easy reflection final. She's not too tough on grading essays I got 2 A's 1 B. She's caring and always encourages you to reach out. Weekly assignments are easy, can be done in a day or two. Not a stressful online course.
If you're a good writer, your work will be flagged as AI. All of my assignments have been flagged as AI. I've shown her my edit history, but she does not budge. So, unless you write like a third grader, don't take the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFFESOR!!!! I didn't listen to the bad but very honesty reviews but I wish I did. If you want be having meetings with her and get accuse of using AI please don't take this professor. Select another professor, she's the worst.
Please don't take this professor. She's the worst, and you wouldn't want to deal with her.
This teacher genuinely had me questioning my sanity. The mixed reviews have made me come to the conclusion that it is a shot in the dark how this class goes for you, you'll either do fine or you're cooked, I took this class as the final option I had left, if you are in the same boat, good luck.
Worst professor I've ever taken! Please find another professor who actually cares about their students.
She does come off pretty stubborn at first but if you communicate with her and use her office hours she is very understanding, especially with excuses and extensions. Throughout her course you will write 3 essays which are all very easily capable to be completed.
Dr. Hummel is a good professor. Her Comp 1 class can be interesting. You mostly learn about how to write essays. She will assign three essays during the semester. As a student with accommodations she was very understanding and willing to help me. She likes to give you ideas about what you can write about during her lectures.
I enjoyed taking this class she is a tough grader and be sure to read instructions properly so you do not have to redo assignments. Takes a long time to grade your papers and is tough. Make sure to do you reading and research when completing assignments
She was okay, but I wouldn't take her again. If you like to read, be ready to read alot in her class. It takes a while for her to grade, and she nit picks your essay. I know it's for us to become good writers but it sucks to have a decent grade on something you worked hard for.
She is a great teacher, as long as you read her instructions and emails, you should do amazing. Don't turn in things late. I would take her again.
I used the writing center to help me out w some essays, and she still grades them lower than expected.Throughout the course,I thought I was becoming a great writer because of the feedback, but by the end of it, she started grading terribly.I don't know why she would do that. I almost got an A in her class. She wants her students to fail.
I liked taking her class I thought she was a tough grader but was fair and responded to emails quickly as well as being understanding. There is a lot of reading involved throughout this class but as long as you don't use AI and read the instructions properly you will do well. She also rounds grades up at the end of the semester
My first paper got flagged for AI, but once I showed her my edit history she graded it fairly. There are 3 total papers; I ended up with an A on my first paper, a B on my second & an A on my final paper. There was a final paper worth 25% of your grade and a final exam worth 10% taken in person. Don't procrastinate her assignments or papers.
Professor Hummel's class is no walk in the park, but if you put in the effort, you'll learn a ton. The essays can be tough, but her feedback helps you improve. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Pick any other professor. I got very sick for a week, got a doctor's note towards the end of my sickness, asked for an extension on an assignment, and showed her the note, got declined because it only covered 5 days and not the full week. I was also flagged for AI on a discussion post, appealed it, and got denied because "I write too weird".
Her rates on ratemyprofessor is so untrue. She is the worst professor I've ever taken at Florida Southwestern State College. She grades unfairly and will accuses you of AI, that's what she is good at. She serious has no life outside of literature because that's how miserable her life is. Please take a another professor, if she is your only option.
Take only as a last resort! I was fortunate enough to get a B in the class despite a 0 being given for an essay I worked hard on all because I submitted it as a PDF instead of a google doc. Other than that, as long as you follow instructions to a T and turn work in on time, you could pass with a B or C.
Professor Hummel is the worst professor I've ever taken at FSW. She's a miserable teacher who likes to see her students suffer because it's entertaining to her. She should listen to her students and maybe speak with them in person whenever they need help on her assignments. I think she should resign and do something else in her career.
She isn't a horrible professor, but she's a bit iffy. She accuses people of using AI, so I received a C on one of my final papers. I took this class in the fall of 24 during the hurricanes, took a midterm, and had about a minute and a whole essay. Received like a C on it.
Dr. Hummel is amazing! Don't listen to the bad reviews. I always received great feedback and good grades on essays. I was never accused of AI. Once you learn proper sourcing, I promise you will get good grades. I recommend building a relationship with her by speaking with her after class. She cares about her students and wants to get to know you!
This professor was not a good fit for me. They seemed overly concerned about essays being written by AI. I would suggest considering another professor if possible.
Harsh grader, would never take again, but sometimes funny
