Business Communications
great teacher LOVE her
Jill is an amazing teacher she has a lot of insight and you can tell she cares about her students also go to class very important not to much hw as long as you go to class
In class, it's easy, and you actually learn from the lecture. Take her online course though, and you're in for a LOT more work than expected for a 2 unit course, and you don't learn anything. Attend class if you can!!
Learn a lot about business writing in this class. Do all assignments and dont slack off. or else you will make it up in extra credit later
I really, really don't like this teacher. She will change the way she does things multiple times, will tell you to ask her questions through ilearn and not respond, and gave us as much homework as I got in my other 3 classes combined! she tries to overcompensate for hybrid hours WAY too much. Stick clear of those classes!
Class is frustrating, but interesting most of the time. You have to really show that you are learning, and be very expressive in discussions and journal entries (which there are a lot of). You must be very active on ilearn and stay organized, because there are multiple little assignments due every week. The class is tough, but Jill is helpful
Jill cares about you. She may seem mean but if you treat her like a professional she will treat you with respect and like a professional. The class does have a lot of assignments but they are easy busy work kind of assignments. Jill is also very flexible with deadlines. If you take her and her class seriously you will do great.
This class was very eye opening. There couldn't have been a better professor to teach it. Jill Jolley helped us understand the world with different perspectives. She helped us engaged with with the people we were serving at our sites through different conversations and readings. Overall Jill is at the top in helping the students understand others.
Tired&Ready to just finish school with minimal effort? Then don't take her(and reassess the purpose of college, for you). If you're invested in yourself and learning, she'll double the investment - making sure you personally walk away a smarter-better rounded student&person. Her lessons go beyond the classroom&curriculum, they're worth you're time.
ESSENTIALS: Read the book & rubrics, GO TO OFFICE HOURS WEEKLY, & PROOFREAD X 10! Do this throughout the semester, and you will walk away a million times better writer and student (and save yourself from massive frustration). TAKE THE TIME to connect with Jill - if you're an engaged student, she's you're greatest advocate(2nd only to ur mama maybe)
Very good instructor with a wealth of knowledge that she shares with the class
Jill has overall great break through with studies. She could really get the class to opened up and participate. Great instructor overall.
This is a ethics class so you will be exposed to alot of deep emotional topics. I think Jill is the best teacher to offer this class. There is alot of reading and journalizing in this class. I would recommend scheduling a small portion of reading once a day. IE. Read one chapter and then after journal it right away. Otherwise you will fall behind.
Great teacher that will undoubtedly change your perspective on things. Highly recommend
Jill Jolley is a great professor, we had some really good topics of conversation every class meeting that helped me reflect and think critically
passionate, dedicated, inspiring .. you'll actually learn .. a rebel in a faculty full of pathetic "job" teachers.
Hated her class!! Absolute waste pf my time and money! Super pointless class! Too many books and the course load was for 6 units and we only got credit for 4.
She is by far the best professor on the entire CSUMB campus. She's the real deal as far as how a college professor goes. She runs her classes like a boss and yes she actually expects you to use your brain! Welcome to Jill Jolley’s class, welcome to the real world!
She is one of the best professors in the university. She really cares about how you are doing and wants you to succeed not just in class but in life. If you are expecting an easy A in this class then you are mistaken. It is a lot of work and you have to earn your A. Her classes are really fun and informative and always leave you happy!
Had Jill for 300s and 304. I struggled in learning how to write for the business world, but I can attribute the skills I have now to her 304 class. And her 300s class really opened my eyes to business ethics, concerning the environment and those who struggle with poverty in our society. She is very involved around the business school at CSUMB
Huge amounts of work await you. Good teacher though
A lot of work and a lot of reading so make sure you do your homework once it's assigned. Overall great teacher,
Tons of homework. Come to class prepared to talk about the homework. Great class discussions.
Be prepared to do a lot of homework. Assigns around 6-8 assignments a week. If you want to pass the class, show up everyday and be prepared to do all homework. Also, you need to love to do group projects and talk infront of the class. If you love a challenge, Jill is a good fit for you.
It's funny to see the positive reviews here, because she is quite literally the worst. Want clear expectations? She won't know what you mean. Want to discuss a concept? She doesn't have a good enough grasp of the material. Have a presentation? Get ready to have it changed right before you go. She can be moody depending the class before, so beware
She is a great teacher! Very understanding and a lot of students really respect her. She is an awesome teacher and I would recommend taking her. There is a lot of work but it is so worth it!
Jill is quite literally NOT the worst; she is the best! She has high expectations for her students, & this can be seen by the amount of work that is given; however, this shouldn't be a surprise. It's college! She is a wonderfully accommodating teacher who is always open to suggestions, & she fosters an environment that promotes communication.
Jill is one of the best lecturers but her teaching style is tough. If you want the answers handed you, don't take her class. She expects you to think critically, apply the principles and get the work done. It's not meant to be easy, but it will prepare you for the business environment which, BTW, has the same expectations. Put in the effort now.
Jill Jolley is one of those few professors that you are lucky to have. While the courses she teaches are fundamentals courses and require their due amount of reading and assignments. Jill is also the professor that will reply back to emails, pick up the phone, and meet on days she's not scheduled to be on campus to fully support you when you ask.
Jill is either liked or hated. She is passionated about her field and great at teaching.
Jill wants to you critically think about each topic she assigns. She wants to see out of the box type thinking and welcomes everyone's opinion, but be ready to back up what you say with facts. Jill isn't afraid to let her students know what she is/has gone through. This is an incredible quality to have. This made me feel comfortable and welcomed.
like the lecture
Jill, is quite possibly one of the best instructors CSUMB has to offer. It is a pro-seminar course meaning participation is crucial. Attendance is mandatory, if you inform her ahead of time, you will be ok. Lots of homework through the week, which is doable if you manage your time wisely. Overall, she is there for you 100%. TAKE JILL FOR BUS300s!
Jill is a great professor who is passionate about her work and integrates these passions into our class discussions. Get ready for a lot of work and a lot discussion based classes - she really tries to have everyone understand the differences in viewpoints and positions. Very respectable and always open to help; both inside of class and not.
Really interesting lectures
One of the best professors at CSUMB, hands down.
It was cool.
I took the online version. Lots of work but if you do it the semester will go well!
I learned new critical thinking skills in Jill's class. She's very honest, walks the talks, and wants the students in her class to succeed - but it's not a free ride. You'll work for it, it's not wasted effort. The results will be worth it.
She is really helpful. Yes there is a lot of homework but it is reasonable for a college student. All the assignments are worth doing. Very fun class and interesting! Don't get behind in homework! You'll regret it.
One of my favorite teachers I have ever had. There is a lot of homework, but it all ties in to what you are learning.
Jill is a great instructor, quick emails, helpful advice, cares for students, and has solid ethics. Class is straightforward. Jill is strict to deadlines, which prepares students for the real world of jobs. Tip: word wisely what goes in the peer eval form, it's unclear that it is put into an excel sheet for the class to see (writers are obvious).
Jill is perhaps one of the best at CSUMB. Proactive, empathetic, and engaged. She makes it a point to have no one feeling left out. It's up to you however, to stand out and shine. Lots of work, but nothing time management and consistancy can't aid you in. One of the best of not the best instructor I have had thus far at CSUMB and in college.
Great feedback, overall take you to real world experience throughout cases that required critical thinking and judgment.
Mrs. Jill Jolley is a different breed of professor. She genuinely cares for her students and the community. She provided support and encouragement in my time of need which resulted in me achieving my goals.
Ask her help if you need it. Jill is a great instructor, quick emails, helpful advice, cares for students, and has solid ethics. Class is straightforward and be ready to read. Jill is strict to deadlines, which prepares students for the real world of jobs. If you fall behind or get lost go talk to her or turn in the minimum work to get credit.
Jill is one of my favorite professors at CSUMB. What made her class so good was that she actually has experience in the workforce. Attendance is mandatory and so is participation. Overall, Jill is a great professor. Very helpful and caring.
Great Professor. She is very clear on what she expects from her students and I've learned so much from her throughout the semester. I would take her again if she's teaching the classes that I need to take. Though, be ready to have class discussions because it is very important in your grade. I had an awesome semester with her.
Jill is an amazing teacher who really cares about improving the outcome of each student by the end of the semester. I am so glad I was given the opportunity to not only take her for BUS300S, but also for BUS 305 because she was by far my favorite teacher. She is smart and funny, making the class enjoyable.
It was a time consuming class. Get ready to read but i enjoyed volunteering.
would recommend, yes there is a lot of work but it's not that bad once you get a routine with it going.
She is a really nice and encouraging professor, but you need to read a lot of articles and watch many videos and then give A LOT of feedback to classmates. Overall good prof.
Great Professor.
She is a great Professor, responds to e-mails quickly . Very helpful and explains the assignments .
I took an online class over the summer. Good amount of work but fast with grading and feedback, always there when we need her.
She is a great teacher, who really cares about her students. There is a ton of work for this class, so stay on track!
Participation matters, lots of homework, inspirational, many papers, extra credit
Excellent professor. She cares about her students. She gives assignments that make you think and develop your critical thinking to make your own ethical and moral decisions. This is my second course with this professor, I specifically chose this professor again because of the depth of her lectures, the class discussions and the open forums.
Great professor and amazing person. Love her personality, funny and always making students laugh.
Was a good teacher, very opinionated, but listened to others views as well. Feedback on papers was a little delayed and there is a lot of repetitive writing.
She is a nice person outside of class, but inside the classroom, she appears to be too political, too opinionated, and a little bit lazy with her lectures. Since it was a BUS Ethics course, we covered many topics, but she always tried to make them political and talk about how bad conservatives are in politics. She also doesnt research some topics
If you are looking to expand your overall knowledge on ethics this is the right professor to take. It is not often that she leans into one area of agreement. There is always stakeholders to take into account. There are various comments on her being to political and oppinionetic duh!!! It is an ethics class, what did you expect?
I would say, Jill, is a great professor, perhaps the best I have had. She opened my eyes to see issues the way I had never seen before. Open minded, caring and listens to others. The ethics class is amazing!
Professor Hosmer is a little intimidating at first but you will warm up to her fast. Covers a lot of interesting and relevant material in current events and ties them to service learning. This class is hybrid so we met once a week and it seemed like a lot of assignments but if you're good at time management it's a breeze.
She didn't give me the grade I thought I deserved. Definitely take her class if ever you should get a chance.
I took BUS300s online during the summer. Professor Hosmer was a good teacher, class requires 30 hours of community service and she was picky on where you could do your hours, had to be a homeless service provider, so if youre not comfortable with that, find another professor. You also have weekly assignments due including forum posts.
Jill is an understanding professor. I have taken multiple of her classes because she is a great professor. the activities we do during class help me understand the chapter rather than boring lectures by other professors. Jill has experience in the business world, that become great advice to her students.
I always have a great experience in Jills classes. Probably one of the most respected professors at the school due to her dedication to her students. Her experience in her previous careers is so conducive to facilitating her lectures. Id recommend her to anyone! Got an A!
I had Jill for Bus 330, she is a great teacher that works hard be available after outside of class. Jill helped me with editing my resume; in-addition, to giving me advice on my present career and possible future ones. Jill cares deeply for her students, and even convinced me to stop driving a motorcycle out of concern. Great professor!
The work load can seem like a lot if you don'tget it done as soon as possible. Reading before class is a must, but overall a good class to take.
Excellent professor! Definitely is someone who will go above and beyond to ensure student success. Easy to be reached and accommodates to students. A lot of her lectures are tied back to the workplace and allows students to be able to reflect on them. Definitely would recommend her!
Jill is a great teacher, she has so much knowledge and experience she brings to class. As long as you do every assignment and do well on the midterm/final you will do well in the class. I hope to take a future class with her.
Jill always kept it interesting and fun. In class she is definitely doing her job; but meet with her in her office hours and you will see how amazing and helpful she is. She is a great resource to have , especially when discussing our lives and careers. You can tell she cares about her students and their future as well, not only their grades.
Great professor, gives constructive feedback to help you succeed and improve in class.
Absolutely amazing. So supportive inside of class and out would encourage students to come see her outside of class if struggling to improve grades. Would always be %100 supportive to students who failed the midterm and kept them hopeful by always offering other options for assessments for them to pass. Where was Jill when I was in high school?!?!?
Over the semester Jills comments and grades on assesments were concise and fair. The workload was large but it matched the content, which was delivered effectively. Jill is also hilarious and knows how to engage a class constructively. I had a great semester with Jill.
Professor Jill is a great instructor. Her class is based on critical thinking and sharing real life scenarios in the class. There is work to do in the class but if you do it all there shouldn't be a reason why you should pass. She encourages her students to pass even when their struggling in her class. She gives great feedback on assignments.
This class was really interesting thanks to the professor that adds so many contents, and value to the course.
Jill is an excellent professor. She really cares about the well-being of her students. She is a bit of a slow grader, but she gives great feedback so you can do better on future assignments. It takes a bit to adjust to her teaching style but once you do you will do well on the midterm and final. Jill is a good person and I would recommend her.
Jill is a great professor, but she makes you work for your grade. Expect to actually read the material and never take an exam lightly. If you need help she is very attentive during her office hours and is more than happy to meet with you. My tip? Read the material, take extra credit opportunities, utilize office hours, and study for the exams.
Do not take her class! She took forever to grade papers. Her lectures were unclear and there was times when she came to class unprepared.
Jill is an mediocre teacher at best. She puts her own interests ahead of the students. She cares more about her public perception. She did not adequately prepare the class for the midterm and most students failed. She seems to relish in her tough manager persona and it translates poorly to the classroom
Jill is not a good teacher because she doesn't lecture and prepare before her classes. She does not prepare her students for the midterm or final and the grades reflect that decision. She takes months in order to grade simple assignments. Overall she has a very condescending tone and does not actually teach anything. The class is all selftaught
Professor jill takes time to get used too. Her teaching styles are different but you can still pass her class. Communication is KEY with her. She seems uncompromising but if you take the time to communicate she will most definitely help you out in the end.
Jill is not a good teacher but she's not a bad teacher. Mostly self taught class with easy grading. Just do the quizes and read the chapter and you will be fine. The lectures were boring but bearable. Almost didn't give us a study guide for the midterm until the business head got involved. If you are good at self learning this is the class for you
Jill is a great professor, she is great to communicate with and you can go to her for anything. I worked hard for my grade, you just have to stay on top of the reading to pass the class. She is flexible with students and helps you pass the class. She offered multiple extra credit opportunities through the semester, she looks out for us students.
You get what you put in; you do a good job you will get a good grade. She is a caring committed professor. Excited to take her again
This class requires lots of work outside of class. Quizzes are given daily in class to ensure you have read the material. This teach requires critical thinking and participation in class discussions. Do the outside reading. In a group all semester long, several assignments done as a group including 3 presentations.
I took the online portion of BUS331 and I would recommend it to others. It an easily accessible class that was made for online. You also have to be prepared for the homework because there are lots of them. Also be aware that they're lots of forums, but I honestly prefer them instead of the essays. All around not a bad professor or class to take.
Great teacher. Had her for BUS330 Online. I can strongly recommend Professor Hosmer!
Jill is a great Professor who really cares about her students and their success. She knows what she's talking about and wants to give us an insight into her knowledge so that we can become successful. She doesn't;t mind sharing so that we can grow as individuals and future managers. She is awesome !!!!
Assignment instructions were unclear and constant changes via emails, up to 10 emails a week that were contradictory. I was overwhelmed and intimidated from mass emails. Major assignment guidelines are not specific and hard work results in C-.
The work isn't necessarily difficult, just extremely time consuming. Besides the big paper, most of the material is just key terms. She stopped lecturing and had the students teach the class through mini group presentations (sometimes 3-4/day). There's too much nonsense going on like mandatory participation and seating rules. Didn't learn much.
BUS625 The material itself isn't hard but extremely time consuming. More busy work than value add - didn't learn anything in their class. The written assignment guidelines say one thing and Jill expects something else. Grading and expectations vary from student to student and group to group. Tries to be helpful but did more harm than good.
Never taking her class again!
Jill is teaching a class on management, and management is hard. People who do not take this class seriously will not do well. Honest feedback can feel harsh when one has put a lot of effort into a project, only to receive criticism. Life does not care about us, but Jill does. She learns everyone's names and takes time to give personalized advice.
Ms. Hosmer is a very caring teacher and is very understanding. She is going to challenge you but is very understanding and communicates what you need to do to get the grade you want in the class. Its not an automatic A, but if you give full effort and turn things in on time and participate in class than its an easy A
Jill handled the transition from in-person to online very smoothly. She was available whenever needed to talk about homework, papers, or life in general. This is not a class that you can skip and pass, you need to be there and participate, and in doing so; Jill teaches you so much useful information. She cares about her students and it shows.
Take this class in person and not online, but her classes were also very interactive that help learns the subjects of the level. The group project was also very challenging.
There's a reason 60 students disliked the most helpful rated comment and 60 and 52 likes on 2 of the first bad rated comment. This solves your question on why you shouldn't take this teacher.
So I don't understand why Jill got slammed on here, if you want an easy A for this class, you're not going to get it. You need to do the work and yes there is a lot of work but it is manageable. Easy A's are no longer possible at this level. Do your work, participate, ask Jill for help, she gets back to you quickly she helps you always, just ask.
Jill is one tough cookie with a strong personality. I took her class regarding these reviews and these reviews did not feel accurate of her class. The workload compared to other 305 is so heavy. I will give her this, she is a fast grader but the workload for this became overwhelming. Her emails are constant and long. You have to work for your A.
Her instructions are not informative enough to help you on tests. Most of the discussion are pretty off the topic, so it would be really difficult to study for the exams and the research paper if you rely only on the professor's lectures.
By far the worst teacher I have had in my 4 years in college. She assigns work that is sufficient to 10-15 hours of reading and assignments per week. She grades things extremely intense and does not give clear directions on assignments. She often would send multiple emails about what people did wrong and it was clearly not understood by the class.
If you talk, you do well. She wants everyone participating in the discussion. Always go to class because she talks about career stuff a lot. Everyone I knew got As because even though there is a lot of work, it isn't hard work. Read, watch a video, write an online journal, talk in class. Thats about it.
Not an easy class but very interesting. Professor is good, hardworking, inspirational. Lots of work, 2 individual large papers, 3 group projects. Get the book, you will need it.
Professor Jolley was amazingly adaptable to the needs of the students. She checked in regularly to ensure the format was reaching her students. She was very available, with regular office hours, and if there was a big paper due, she made herself available on Friday and Saturday nights, adding extra office hours. Students were engaged in class.
Strict grader who clearly defines the expectations in her syllabus and paper requirements, and then completely throws them out of the window. You never know what she will grade based on. Lectures contribute NOTHING, but if you don't participate at least twice or once in a heavy way, she will mark you absent.
The way she approaches the class is just not it. Get it together. She clearly doesnt know what it is like to be a college student in 2021 not in the 90s !! Her grading is ridiculous. She one gave me 13.7 out of 15 for a participation assignment. Theres 45 other students so its hard to compete with other hands but she does not care.
Great person, I enjoy her personality. She is a bit unpredictable though in grading. Sometimes it's like giving a perfect score to someone is too hard for her. You can follow along with what someone else did or follow how she outlines in the instructions and get like 5 points off for NO REASON. She acts as if her class is the only class you take.
This class is pretty straightforward: the amount of effort one puts into this class will equal to the outcome of success in this class.
Do not recommend. I've never had such lacking directions given for assignments in any previous class, ever. She is accessible outside of class, but you had better be ready to do more than you think is required. Her instructions are unclear and you will lose points otherwise. Be ready to write papers without clear directions
Out of all the teachers and professors I have had in my years of schooling. She is by far my favorite for so many reasons She is very passionate and wants everyone to not only learn the material but be able to incorporate it into their everyday lives. She believed in me and made me feel special because of her I want to be a leader of a company
Professor Jill is an amazing educator and someone I am glad to call my friend. Her teaching style may seem unorthodox at first but it only made the class more memorable and enjoyable. Overall, BUS305 was an amazing class. Only complaint is that class could get boring because only few people participated in the discussions. Thank you, Jill!!!
I had the privilege of taking a class with this professor and I have to say that she is absolutely amazing. Not only does she listen to her students and take their feedback into consideration, but she also adapts her teaching styles to accommodate everyone's needs. She provides plenty of extra credit opportunities to help balance things.
Lots of work but great professor, this class will help you become a good leader once you get your MBA.
Jill will do whatever to be a good prof
\ This course has no real value and is just busy work. The amount of absolutely pointless assignments that are nothing but time consuming were so insane. I genuinely almost lost my mind taking this class because it is so worthless and a waste of time. The worst teacher I have ever had. No clear instructions on anything.
Not so much real world struggle. Prof was one of the rich elites that had no idea about life
