One of the best teachers I've ever had. She's very helpful and easy to approach. Her lectures are always interesting & she encourages questions & input. She makes science easy to understand and interesting for the non-science minded.
Had her as a TA. She's very helpful and understanding. Wants student to do their best and goes the extra mile to do it. A+
A delightful, charming young woman with a lot of enthusiasm for a fascinating subject. Some areas will bore you,but dont let that discourage you.Always on time and always interesting.Dont think twice about taking a course with Jill, cause shes well worth it
An excellent teacher with a great personality, one of the most intelligent women I've met. Really knows her stuff and explains things very well. Also, she has a great body...
The most inspiring teacher I have had in ages. Not only is she knowledgeable but she is able to explain concepts with utmost clarity. Hooray!!!
Terrible teacher. Lack of justification of marking. Unclear as to what she looks for in her essays. UNapproachable...looks bitter/angry all the time. Great course, shouldnt be taught by her.
An excellent professor. A must professor for all Non-science students. Her explainations are extremely clear and a very helpful professor. She teaches with enthusiasm.
I took Socio Politics with her for Gen Ed requirement. She is an amazing teacher. She really knows her material and can explain it on the spot for you. She's nice and approachable always. She also likes the Bionic Woman. Now she prob knows who I am
Jill is a nice lady who really wants to help her students. Always there before and after class. My only complaint is there was too much reading.
what an excellent prof -- really cares about her students
she is very passionate about what she does & it seems she wants to reach out to as many people as she can. i haven't finished this course yet, but she's a life changing professor. i wish all teachers were like her, then i'd actually learn something. thanks lazenby.
Most understanding well focused prof I had at Glendon. Awesome
a FANTASTIC professor, she's absolutely brilliant! Evry class she gives is mind-blowingly insightful and informative, she's a fountain of interesting knowledge. Also, super-approachable and helpful, articulate and cool. Her good looks are icing.
She is wonderful teacher. Even, if you are not a science major, she helps you understand it. I wasn't interested in science and had to take this course and elective and it was one of my fav.
she's nice but very disorganized; sometimes she just goes off on a tangent and we're always behind. Cancels class a lot; it's like she's lost her head...wouldn't recommend her.
always forgets students' essays at home. not overly helpful and her class wasnt interesting.
I read what some people had wrote, and had to counter what their comments. She makes herself available, makes science interesting, and is very approachable. I would tend not to question the professor, but the students who rate her.
Nice prof - but let's see. The marks for the first assignment we never got back. The marks for the first paper (due in december) were given out in february. For the second paper (due in March) she couldn't hand some back because she said her cat pissed on them (im not lying, this is what she said), she takes time to reply to emails. go ahead, enjoy
She does make science interesting but she tends to get carried away commenting on things. Very unorgonized, she is always in search for her own notes on the desk, and she often fails to update her web - get really frostrating. Even though there is no tutorial on the calendar she puts on in in the last hour of class but since she is teaching it it
Jill is an EXCELLENT teacher, always available for giving help and is passionate and excited about what she teaches. She really cares about her students and she is not arrogant or obnoxious at all. How many professors can you say that about? She really wants you to do well in her class and will do whatever she can to make sure that happens!
A very good professor overall. I really enjoyed her class and she makes science interesting. Good lectures and very helpful. One little problem is that she may be late on the marking of tests/assigns. She makes it clear what she is looking for to get a good grade and is a fair marker. Make sure you participate in discussions. Highly recommend her.
she's very disorganized and somewhat of a "space case". topics in her class range from blahhh to borderline interesting. she takes 5 years to hand anything back. i wouldnt take another class with her. oh yeah and one percent away from an A+ and the woman never replied to my email about boosting the mark.
so disorganized! have fun!
Too many readings & tests, hard work=low mark. If you want get a good mark, don't choose her course!!!
This a very good course if you want to learn about science and its ethical uses. I liked the prof. she was very approachable, helpful and a fair marker. However, she is disorganized when it came getting grades back to students. Be prepared not to get back essays in a timely fashion.
she is an awsome proff. very approchable, always ready to answer questions for students and clarify things. the lectures topics are very interesting, i loved going to this class. the exams are a little difficult, but if you study for them you'll be fine. i'd highly reccommend this class and proff to anybody interested in science.
She's usually late for class and comes very disorganized. Late in giving back marks, plus I feel she tends to favor female students more than male.
shes an okay prof. you dont need the text books for this class. she just takes really long to hand things back (which kinda sucks). overall she was ok, she was clear and very aproachable.
Dry lectures, boring. Her first test was so hard everyone failed and we had to have a re-do which was much easier which is cool of her to do. Overall she tries very hard to explain things but her knowledge is so great, she gets carried away and loses me in her lectures.
SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER! SHE'S HARD BUT SHE MAKES EVERYTHING INTERESTING! LOVE HER! GO JILL!
A little bit boring. Her tests are not hard if you study. Not good/fast at responding to emails. But she is nice and always smiles whenever someone asks a question.
Takes her SWEET time replying to e-mails, so a tad annoying when you require emidiate help. Lectures make you tune out until everyone in the class is playing solitare or checking facebook over and over. Will agree with you no matter how ridiculous you'll sound
Succeeds P. Wilson for the W term of NATS1660. By far, the most boring monotonic lecturer for an already boring nats course. The level of boredom was so unbearable that half of the entire class fails to attend her lectures. The tests are also relatively hard whereas over 75% of the students failed, mainly because she didnt say what is on the test.
Attend her classes & u'll do well on tests/assignments. She also marks the bookreports really easy. When she posts the answers for the group assignments online READ THEM, cause they will be the same questions on her tests! Her lectures on biology are more clearer & interesting than her lectures on physics. Lastly, her website also helps out a lot!
the class is very boring and hard, but the test is not very hard if you go to the class and study. Jill is very nice and helpful. but if english is not your first language this course will be very very hard!
Awsome prof, class is boring but extremly easy tests are all written very clear in her outlines. Lectures are set up for the tests. Class has 3 major tests (no final), and 3 assignments. Would definatly recomend her class to anyone. side note: there is cell/biology (gr.12) involved if you didnt take it in highschool.
I loveeed Jill's class. Such a nice, sweet lady - very, very humble. Loves to have conversations with students outside of class and NEVER makes you feel stupider than she is. Most people found her class boring but a quick look at them showed they had no genuine interest in learning. But if learning is your thing, Jill is the person to help.
Great prof. I hate science, but she actually made the course interesting.
I loved her class, she's such a nice person, always willing to help, made the material interesting
The best professor at YorkU! She's very clear on what she expects, and her tests are extremely easy! She's really nice and very understanding! I highly recommend taking a class with her!
She is wonderful, kind, very patient, and the best prof ever.
Such an awesome, amazing prof and a really nice person too.
Interesting material and tries her best to make the class lively...Do the work and you'll get an A...
Great and very helpful prof. I highly recommend take her classes!!!
Her classes were one of the most interesting claases i have rever taken at York. she makes her lectures very interesting and easy to understand. 5 stars!
Sweetest prof I've met. Prof Lazenby is incredible, very clear, approachable and straightforward. If you come to class/ do the readings, you'll get an easy A. I hated science, and had no interest in this course whatsoever, but this course makes you think. Take it for your gen ed!
The class itself is not difficult. However, the professor is very disorganized. The final project due date was postponed multiple times due to the professor's inability to mark the proposals for the project. (worth 25% of the total mark) While the course itself is an easy A, this professor is not the ideal professor to take it with.
It is definitely not easy although I got an A. Pure memorization from textbook and lecture slides. Class average in 60s. Only good thing is that class attendance is not mandatory unless there is group assignments/quizzes.
She is a clear prof but her tests are difficult. Make sure you memorize and go to her way before the assignments/essays are due. She is very helpful in understanding and clarifying ideas and concepts but extremely tough when marking.
She's an excellent professor Very knowledgeable in the field of science and she actually makes the course very interesting
To be fair this class was hard for me, not sure if it was the prof or just me not understanding. I found it difficult, I attended all classes, tests are hard, lectures are long and boring, group assignments are tedious depending on group members. I dropped it, but she seemed like a nice prof.
Jill is an amazing professor! She is very very clear and explains science in the best way possible. Shes always there for students. The course is okay in terms of structure. Make sure you get a good group for group assignments!
While all the other profs I had read straight off their PowerPoints, she expands on them and give examples. She's very nice and approachable if you need help or any questions with the lectures. You have make an effort but not it's not too difficult (memorization). History of astronomy in beginning was a bit boring but after it's interesting.
prof Jill is very nice. due to some personal reasons I wasn't able to focus during the end of semester. prof jill was very accommodating. she arranged a make-up exam for me also gave me make up assignment. she will listen to you and try to help you as much as she can. her lectures are also very clear and easy to follow. Im taking her again in fall
Professor Lazenby presents a lot of knowledge and points about the history of science and the transition of our worldview. If you read the assigned materials before class, you will get a lot from the lecture and I bet you will enjoy it. The questions appeared on quizzes and tests will make a lot of sense if you attend every class.
Jill wants best for her students and is there for her students and unfortunately I find a lot of Yorks profs don't have that mind set, although it is an 8:30 lecture I hate missing them because she actually teaches us in class instead of listening to her own voice talk. She does however challenge you to think on exams and assignments, not so easy.
Not too bad of a prof but couldn't stand the lectures. Very boring. Speaks about one topic for half of the class and rushes through the rest. Tells you the textbook is mandatory but I never even opened it. She posts everything on the lecture slides and makes you read the textbook online for LearnSmart assignments. Wouldn't take again.
She is a nice person and wants you to do well, however, her lectures are boring. Thankfully she provided lecture recordings.
Jill is a very kind and genuine person. However, the one downside to this course is it is NOT easily accessiable for those who do not have a strong BIO/CHEM background. Though it is slated as a approved elective course. Also, LOTS of tests and LOTS of memorization. Also she takes a long time to post marks.
Even though it's at 8:30 AM, worth going. "Must have textbook" never once opened(Online version is enough). Lots of opportunity for improving grade - projects(2), tests(4), Learn Smart assignments etc. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A STRONG SCIENCE BACKGROUND IT WILL BE DIFFICULT. Jill has a bio background really pushes that into the content of lectures.
Very kind and approachable professor. Loved her lectures even though they were at 8:30am. The only hard part were the tests, but the assignments and quizzes helped improve grade.
probably my fav prof ever. shes so nice and cares about her students' success. im taking human development and you can tell she really knows what shes talking about. answers everyones questions online and in person. always smiley and ready to lecture at 8:30am!! lectures fly by. makes mornings less dreadful. would recommend for sure
Her lectures were quite dry and content heavy. Lots of quizzes and extra assignments, so much work to do! She even gave us about 3 group assignments. Not fun. But she was a nice lady who knew what she was talking about. Just wish she wasn't so monotone.
Jill is very knowledgeable and great at teaching. A lot of uni professors don't teach as well as she does because one doesn't need a teacher's college degree to be a professor, only a phD. But she is sooooo good at explaining concepts and her examples really help students understand the material. Jill is also very approachable. WONDERFUL prof!
Jill Lazenby is a great professor. The lectures were interesting and she was always willing to answer questions. She used Tophat which allows students to participate even if they are not comfortable speaking up in class. The use of an online text also made things easy. The lectures were all recorded and could be referred to any time.
Dr. Lazenby was a fantastic final prof to have during my last semester at York. She really encouraged collaboration amongst students to build more a more robust understanding of core concepts in the field of STS. Her assignments were actually relevant both inside the classroom and out, she always communicates with students and encourages the same.
Jill is very kind and approachable & makes you not completely dread an 8:30 am class. I didn't read the online textbook once and still managed to get a pretty good mark. The tests are mostly based off her power points. She records her lectures but she also does record attendance for a grade. you don't need a heavy bio background but it'll help,
Great professor. Very approachable and you can tell she really wants her students to succeed. I took a new course with her- and although the course needs a few adjustments for clarity- it was still enjoyable with Jil.
Shes very powerpoint heavy. Which i like. She barely used the textbook. I literally studied all her ppt slides and i did pretty well in the exams. There are a lot of homeworks and projects but its really easy. It was pretty much taking pictures of plants and whatnot. She made the lectures super interesting.
she lives and breathes plants, you can tell just by talking to her how passionate she is about talking and teaching about plants. she absolutely loves what she is doing and she show case it by knowing the material well and being organized in her teaching. aside from being a nice teacher she is also just a nice and friendly lady as well.
Prof Lazenby was great for my final year. Class size is small which really lets everyone collaborate on a much more personal level which she definitely encourages. Would definitely take a class with her again
Not someone you would want to go to if you want an A. She seems a bit confused herself and the students with science background need to help her out. Very careless with group project checking and assignments but on the other hand strict about submission. Helps you out with the assignment during the day of submission.
Jill is a very caring and knowledgable professor she had us meditate in the first 5 min of class. Jill also offered tutoring sessions before the test. I never took science science gr. 11 and it was college too but I still managed to do good. However, she takes like two months to give assignments marks so you dont know your gpa until midway.
Good prof, but tough exams. I chose her course for natural science credit. It wasn't easy for non-majors in science.
She is very good in terms of giving out information - she doesn't rush into anything and if you need help she is there to help. In a way she does kind of spoon feed you information so it is a pro and con. Nats 1810 was a double credit course but she taught it smoothly and she is very understanding with deadlines. Definitely a great prof!
I quiet like her. She is very passionate about what she teaches. Her exams aren't hard its just that there are lots of extra assignments and quizzes to complete.
She knows what she is talking about & is good at explaining things. The only complaint I have is how long it takes to get grades back.. assignments took more than 2 months to receive a grade. The syllabus structure allows students to do well on assignments which makes up for poor exam marks for non-science students. Recorded lectures posted online.
For an introduction course it was very heavy. Lots of scientific terms to memorize. Considering that not everyone who takes this class is a science student, it should if been easier.
I loved this class despite not really being the best at the sciences. She made this class very interesting and easy, she is amazing!
She genuinely cares about her students and goes above and beyond to try and give the best experience possible.
Jill is amazing. She was the first prof I encountered in uni and she remains the best one. She's so caring and kind and her class is extremely organized. You know exactly what's expected of you and if you attend class and do the work you'll do really well. I had an early morning class with Jill and she made it worth it
Amazing prof and very caring
She's very passionate about plants and what she teaches. She's an amazing clear lecturer, she never ends class early. Her grading criteria and whats required on exams are very clear as she outlines everything!! Only complaint is that it takes forever to get grades back. Also do not bother buying the textbook, everything you need is in her lectures
Only take this class if you have taken biology in the past in high school. She went by the terms very fast and didn't really get too specific about them. I tried to set up a meeting with her after I failed the midterm (it was summer term) and she only suggested that I look up the definitions for the terms she had provided from her last lectures.
Takes forever to get grades back. Months even. Doesnt post information in a tiely manner. Told us 4 different times we would get info on the major project of the semester at certain times and failed to get the info out for over a month past the time it was supposed to come out. I have other classes. 20% projects shouldnt be left till the last min.
Nice prof, understands her subject and strives to create an engaging and interesting environment. Sometimes has unrealistic or confusing expectations about what needs to be done in class, but will make sure that her mistakes don't harm you or your grade. Considerable in class group work.
Unorganized. Posts are almost always late/ delayed. Tests are weighed a lot compared to assignments. Do not take this course if you're not good at memorization and you're not good at retaining heavy info.
Jill was very caring and passionate, however, she seemed to be very unorganized. Test and assignment grades took months to be updated/posted. She is very accessible outside of class which is helpful.
Shes an overall okay prof, however there are some things that I felt like sharing. She has horrible time management, she says shell put Activity 10 on moodle on Friday and ends up putting it 3 days late, it has been more than 2 months and she still hasnt posted my Test 2 grades and it took her 2 weeks to reply to my emails about it..
DO NOT take this course. It is extremely hard and Dr. Lazenby is a really hard marker and it takes FOREVER for her to post the grades... it is a very boring and a difficult course and she tries her best to make it even harder AVOID AVOID AVOID
took an online class with her and shes really friendly and tries hard to be clear. however, she needs to try harder. if you're someone who struggles to grasp bio, maybe she's not the best for you. she's hard to reach often, extremely late to grade too. if you're ok in bio, just wanna get it over with, and can study independently mostly, i rec her
Prof. Lazenby is incredibly caring and knowledgeable about the subject that she teaches. However, you have to be very on top of your grades as she tends to post them very very late. The class material is very interesting and the tests are easy enough if you attend lectures.
Jill is a great prof who genuinely cares about her students. She's clearly knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. My only complaint would be that she tends to take FOREVER to post grades for tests and assignments. Do not bother buying the textbook for this course as everything you need to prepare for the tests are in her lectures.
Had her for an online course, not too bad at all really. just a little late to posting course content, but if you do your work and pay attention its all good.
Her classes are very disorganized and unstructured. she always mixed up due dates and her instructions and expectations for assignments are not clear. The TAs for this class are also very bad - many students had marking errors on their tests and assignments. Avoid taking classes with her.
Professor Lazenby is a wonderful professor. She is extremely communicative and clear regarding course material as well as course expectations. She will teach you how to think critically and even incorporate student interests into class material! My experience is that she cares for students and that she puts time into setting them up for success.
Professor Lazenby is an expert in her field, and shares her enthusiasm for subject matter with her students. She deeply cares about your experience as a student, and is flexible in accommodating needs/accessing her outside of class/office hours. Marks took extra time to get, regardless I would absolutely take more of Prof. Lazenby's classes!
She incredibly disorganized and takes for ever to hand back graded work. It is extremely stressful to keep track of her 'course announcements' as they are shared via disorganized platforms and at very irregular times. She will also share extremely important information with certain students and not others. trust me - switch out.
Trust me, she is not a prof you would want to study under. Is she a kind and friendly person? Yes. Absolutely. But she is beyond disorganized and irresponsible when communicating expectations and grades of tests and assignments to her students. I was really looking forward to this class but, my oh my, it was very disappointing to say the least.
The other reviews that gave her 1/5 are unfair. Yes her grading is slow but she's a very good prof. The course is very interesting (almost a history vourse). She gave so much extra time for the exam and midterm. Fairly easy assignments. It blows my mind how some people gave her 1/5. They obviously didn't put in the work and are bitter.
Super slow grader and super unorganized. changed the course structure several times throughout the year. lectures werent too engaging or interesting either even though the course content was nice. shes nice and understanding but i didnt enjoy her class
We had participation assignments which were easy marks to boost our grade. The term project was fun and easy. Her exams were very hard and the textbook was supposed to be helpful for the term project, but it wasn't. She often messed up the due dates for assignments and did not allow extensions. Her lectures were very informative but also boring.
Pretty nice and engaging, but went through the course material way too fast and it was very hard to keep up with the slides. Eventually found it easier to just teach myself. Having prior biology knowledge would make this class much easier as basic background topics are skipped over.
Decent Professor, very knowledgeable and passionate in her field. Very considerate and caring. Class was very group based so you had to show up to class. You also had to show up to class to be able to do the assignments which was a little bit weird. If you show up and do all the assignments, you'll do a lot better than me.
NEVER MARKS ON TIME
Jill is a knowledgeable prof, but can be slow to post grades. The content is challenging, so having bio background helps. unstuckstudy was great for test prep.
Boring. Awful. She focuses less on the content and more on research. Went in thinking I'll learn about pseudoscience, spent half the course learning about valid research. Hated this course.
She does not focus on the actual content, instead goes off on random topics, and then tests on content not even taught. The textbook is barely relevant to the lectures and way too long. Useless class.
In my 4 years at York, this has been one of the most frustrating experiences with a professor. She often promises things like updates or feedback that never happen. The course was disorganized, communication was poor, and emails went unanswered. I would not recommend this professor at all!!!1
Professor Lazenby is very accommodating to students, but a poor lecturer. Often goes on tangents and runs out of time. Most of information taught isn't interesting, useful, or likely to be on the exams that make up 45% of your grade. A good chunk of the questions amount to random trivia facts you would never think to study for. Skip this.
Insects was a fairly tough course, but Prof. Lazenby was beyond helpful.
tried submitting in work 2 minutes late due to technical errors and got a zero. says she doesn't accommodate anything including family emergencies medical emergencies accommodations etc. very strict on submission times and doesn't offer accommodations no matter what.
Jill is an amazing prof, she truly cares about her students and is very accommodating. Her class is very interesting, more of a history course if you ask me. Exams are straightforward, they're not bad if you study properly.
