She was the first teacher (and mb the only one) who could keep me awake in history:)
Tests are hard, but if you pay attention in class and take decent notes you'll do well, participate and don't miss class and you'll de really well. She is easyto pay attention to because she really knows what she is talking about and she truly cares about her subject. Do not take this class if you are interested in getting the "PC" version of thing
Took the summer American Government course, didn't buy the book, never studied outside of class, and got an easy a. She is awesome!
She is probably overall the best professor I had at NOVA in my three semesters going there. She was one of the final factors that convinced me to change my major from Computer Science to Political Science/International Relations; I just enjoy her classes so much. She's a very good government professor, and a pretty good history professor as well.
McKee is hands down the best teacher! Finally someone who will give it to you straight and not be concerned with being "PC" all the time. Her passion for the American system will surely inspire something in you! If you pay attention and take notes, come test day just tell her everything she taught you and you will get an A!
TAKE NOTES. Very good teacher. Know the vocab from your notes and your textbook!
Very smart teacher. Requires taking good notes and showing up to class to get them. She ONLY grades on 4 exams. Therefore, you never need to do HW and all you need to do is show up for class and study the day before each test. She grades REALLY tough, but her test questions are fair. I got a B, but w/ any other teacher i'd have an A.
Mrs McKee is a fantastic professor. You better take lots of notes. She has 4 tests and is going to ask things she talked about. I am a foreigner but I support her political views to 100%. In fact I am also going to take her International Relations and US HIS II class. Best professor ever!
She is an amazing woman but I will warn you that you do have to attend the classes to take notes if you want to do well on her exams. It’s nice to have a professor that likes the subject they are teaching. She is very intelligent and interesting. Her exams are a bit lengthy but it is definitely worth it if you like the subject.
Great professor! I was shocked to read the comments about her saying she didnt help or shes one sided, if you ask her, she is always ready and willing to assist you. Yes, she doesnt sugar coat information and if you want to be "politically correct" then do not take this course. The best professor Ive ever had! Very Informative and passionate.
Very tough grader! However you only need to show up to class and take notes and study for the tests. NO OTHER WORK AT ALL!!! she's smart and enjoyable to listen to even though she doesn't hide the fact that she's conservative. I believe the best poly sci teachers can keep you guessing about their political position. McKee's lessons are biased.
she's a good professor although its obvious what her political leanings are. go to class, listen. take notes and write down the words she writes on the board. she doesn't write much. learn the definitions of those words etc. there are only a few exams, so dont screw up. she is a tough grader, but her class is very enjoyable and informative.good stu
Mckee is a great teacher, however, her lectures are a bit hard to follow. She likes to talk about the cold war A LOT. she talks very fast so taking notes is a chore, but if u ask for help, she'll give u lots of hints. her experiences have really made the class interesting, and has given an inside look. I would suggest this class if u r a HIS buff.
She's a good teacher and she knows her stuff. I drive an hour a day to hear her lecture--she's really up to date with politics and even though I'm not planning to major in Poli Sci..she's one of my favorite teachers..and actually makes you think in a different perspective.
very good teacher, knows exactly what she is talking about. take good notes, and participate. i never had to read the textbook once and i got an A.
A welcome sigh of relief from the left-wing sanctuary that is academia. Yes, she is conservative, and I think its great. Anyway, I took two of her courses and I never got the required textbooks. I passed with high grades. All that is required of students is regular attendance and note taking. She is firm, but fair. Highly recommended.
Fair grader, easy A. If you dont mind complete and total conservative proganda then the class is tolerable at best. She seems to think her connections to the state department equate her opinions as fact to the point of shunning any opposing view even if it is presented in the books which she assigns. Might as well be spokewoman for FOX NEWS.
Knows how to teach but extremely condescending during open discussion. She implied that I was weak-minded for favoring U.N. led diplomacy when dealing with Iran. If you get easily offended at personal attacks I would not recomend this class. If you love hearing opposing view points, then it can be enjoyable. Recomend it to people who love to argue.
She's really passionate about her material but not so much about the students; it's not that she doesn't care, but grades aren't the greatest deal to her. That would work to the students' advantage should it mean that she wields out A's, but actually she is an extremely hard grader. The A I got in her class? Lot's of sweat and time. Not recommended
Absolutely wondeful teacher! This was by far my favorite class this semester! McKee's background helps students to discover that there is much more to international realtions than what's in the book!
I loved Mrs. Mckee. Her class is not tough, but she doesn't teach from the book. Try not to miss too many lectures, but does not make attendance mandatory. Interesting too!
She is a great professor. She lectures nothing from the book. The class is not hard, but you have to be good at taking notes. I just wrote down bits of everything she said and studied from that. It was an easy A and her class was pretty enjoyable. She also doesn't give out homework.
Syllabus very clear on assignments, grading, etc. Writing assignments were numerous, but this was mostly due to this section being online. Professor obviously enjoys teaching the material, is helpful if asked, grades work promptly, and gives feedback where needed. I would recommend her to a friend who wants to learn. Not for slackers.
Nice lady very clear lots of work. But if you take it on-line she's understanding as long as you get it all done.
McKee is one of the the most interesting professors I have had. I took the online class and learned alot. Lots of writing online but it was all relevant and useful for the learning experience. This class is a good basis for the next ones I will take. I highly recommend her.
She gets off topic extremely easy. I could write word for word what she said in class on the exams and still get a bad grade. However, the more I wrote republican nonsense the better grade I would get, even if it had nothing to do with the question. She is extremely biased. Nice person but bad teacher.
Very realist view on international and domestic affairs. This is a welcome reprieve from mainly idealistic views of other teachers. Tests are lecture based.
Nice lady but very hard. She actually commented our tests were too easy when only one person got an A. She is very smart but she is also *extremely* conservative. I'm very much a centrist but I found it too much to tolerate at times. Ignores facts. I will avoid her in the future. There are better educators out there for your money.
I would not recommend this teacher for any one during a six week semester. I had this teacher during the summer and she is useless; I can't believe how she could be a teachet. I mean really all she does is talk none-stop; and she is determined not to help students. Highly DO NOT recommend this teacher her class was a waste of money.
I ABSOLUTELY recomend Professor McKee. If you attend all her lectures, you wont even have to study for the exam because she explains everything very clearly.
Very good at Political Science/International Relations. She knows what she is talking about and she discusses the topic clearly and easily.
I took her over the summer and you need to attend the class to pass the exams, which are all short essays. Material from the book helps somewhat, but she looks for answers from her lectures. She does know her material, but be prepared to write a mile a minute. Almost no time for questions.
Love her teaching, take notes, listen ask questions!
Love her, listen, take notes, ask question. You will never meet another professor like her. Be thankful to be in her class.
This Prof.class is not easy by any stretch of the imagination. But her teaching style makes it very easy to follow. If you want to take this class to really get a better understanding of the subject, her class is for you. She?s very organized in her lectures as opposed to other professors that come in and just wing it. I really enjoyed this class.
Professor Mckee is really awesome. Even though her class is not an easy A, you still enjoy attending her class. It does take a lot of reading and understanding of the material. If you take PLS 241 definitely take it with her. It will be a challenge, but she is always there to assist you if you need help. Take her Take her Take her! She's the best.
Very good professor who will work with you to become an intern if you'd like. The best PLS teacher at NOVA.
International Relations is very fun with Professor McKee. She brings humor into her lectures. Her class is not graded by quizzes and homework but only by her exams. So coming to class and taking good notes is a very important thing. If not your exam grades will be low. Everything is told during class. So attendance is mandatory for receiving an A.
Good teacher. Has a lot of experience and knows what she is talking about. Your grade is solely based on test and a powerpoint so if you dont come to class it will really hurt your grade. A lot of studying and taking notes.
Professor is knowledgeable and very interesting. Tests are primarily from lecture notes, so you must attend class to get an A. Professor is very conservative, however open minded and welcoming. I definitely would take another class from her.
Do not take this class online during the summer. I work and take other classes and can only afford to take this as an 8 week course over the summer. She doesn't understand flexibility and will overload you with work. It's useless and she takes off points for the most inane things. DO NOT TAKE.
I took her intro to IR online class over the summer. We had so much reading and an essay every week! She was such a harsh grader. I got a C on like all of the essay + her reasoning were like "You included a header" or "your first paragraph was awkwardly phrased but you got all the points I was looking for". SHE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER + didnt help
Very hard grader & seems completely against any arguments that don't fit in with her preconceived notions. The tests and work were incredibly hard - they didn't have to be. Many of the questions presented on the tests were not covered anywhere in the assignments or texts. The whole course seemed poorly designed. I wish I would've avoided it.
I'm a straight A student that was getting Cs despite pouring countless hours into homework. Said homework had little to do with the tests, which were massive essays barely related to what we had learned. The homework included at least one essay a week and grades were more based on how conservative papers were, rather than on strength of argument.
Fantastic teacher. Very knowledgeable and intentional with the homework she assigns. You must work hard in this class--but hey, that's real college. Her one-page essays seem intense, but get easier the more you do. This course has definitely prepared me for the working world in which argument, critical thinking, and writing skills are key.
Extensive knowledge and personal experience in the field of International Relations shines the most out of this professor. Getting a good grade is hard since it requires attendance and taking good notes, but the end value is worthwhile. This professor is the only great professor in the field and I strongly recommend her if you want to learn at lot.
Very knowledgeable and professional. I took her IR and US Govt classes and both were not easy, but if you pay attention and show interest, you will be fine. Her tests are usually in-class essays, but she hints at the topics in advance so it's not that difficult.
Took Prof. McKee online for her PLS 241 Course and quickly realized that the reviews on here were quite incorrect. Professor McKee is a difficult grader with a biased viewpoint that can work completely against you. She is disinterested in her students and rarely offers assistance. I found her course to be overwhelming with a lot of reading/work.
Ms. McKee is a RARE find for a professor! Her lectures are interesting because of her real-life political experience. She is helpful and professional; she wrote me recommendations and went out of her way to send them in time, and she aided me greatly in securing an internship. Plus, her course is easy if you put in even a little bit of effort!
Each week you have a couple written assignments, but she's a super fair grader and she flat out tells you what she expects from you. There are also two additional written assignments (movie reflections). I highly recommend taking her!
HORRIBLE INSTRUCTOR. She is the most unhelpful instructor that I have ever encountered. DO NOT think about placing your opinion in discussion boards because your ideas will be shot down by her own. She is opinionated & will not accept that other people have differing views. Will ask for your opinion in papers & give you an F if she doesn't agree.
Jill McKee should not be an educator, because of her biased attitude towards grading assignments. She encourages using your own ideas. However, if she does not agree with them, you will get a bad grade. I once emailed her with a problem and she simply said, "Not my problem". If you can get another choice in teachers, I suggest it.
we had a total of four exams all her exams were easy if you studied. All her exam are in the same format and the quizzes come from the book taken at home which helps your grade. The essays on the exam are based on the notes you take in class from her lecture. Its a lot of words to study. If you aren't a studier than don't take this class.
Prof. McKee prepared interesting assignments for each week of class, she encouraged discussion between students but though some attempted to turn it into a soap box, she respected their opinions but was very good at turng the discussion back to the actual topic. She is extremely helpful and supportive and all of her grading and assignments were very clear.
As long as you pay attention in class, you'll do fine.
McKee is a great Professor, her lectures are very interesting! She expects you to work for your grade, she is not an easy A but you will learn a ton from her. Take her test seriously...I would write down every Key term with definition and examples to study and take notes in class. I made A ' s doing this.
Ms. McKee is a teacher. She wants you to learn. She will make you work for your grade with weekly papers and big assignments. If you want to learn about IR take her class. Be prepared to work for your grade.
She is a great professor with loads of personal experience and background knowledge of topics. Makes government interesting and relatable to what is going on today. Show up to class if you want to pass. No hw. 4 tests with vocab and two essays. Highly recommend her for any class
Write what SHE agrees with.
She can be a tough grader at times and the way she phrases questions/directions can be confusing. She will give you opinion-based questions but as the last person has said, write what she agrees with!! I cannot stress this out enough. You REALLY have to work hard for your grade in this course.
not available outside of class
Expect a lot of homework. She only gives two exams the semester class and the exams are a huge portion of your grade. The exams are hard. Expect to write a paper each week. If you don't write what is her apparent opinion she will take off points. I would not take her again. Does not respond to emails quickly and does not give extra credit.
Very nice, non-biased. Created an environment that made me interested in the subject. Does ask very pointed questions, but only to stimulate the class and to produce a productive discussion.
She is a great professor who has a lot of real world experience. She often goes off on tangents but she is very helpful and its a fun and easy PLS class!
Taking an online class makes it a little more challenging to connect and engage with the professor, in this case I think I only emailed her once. The workload was manageable. Tough grader at first but she gets easier as you go. Do not take this online class if you don't know how to manage your time wisely.
I've loved having Professor McKee as my teacher. I took PLS 211 with her last semester and I'm now taking 212 and 242 with her. Her lectures are interesting, she doesn't go too fast, and she always encourages questions and participation. She grades fairly on the few assignments she gives and she gives helpful feedback. I've been very pleased.
Professor McKee was such a joy to have for two semesters. Her class is straight forward, and there is very little homework. Tests are hard, but if you go to class, you will succeed. She's a wonderfully intelligent and kind. I highly recommend taking her class!
Professor McKee is very passionate about her subject which makes it so much easier to learn! Her lectures were interesting and there was a lot of debating and participation between students. The tests are pretty hard, but if you pay attention and take notes they're not too bad.
Four exams of definitions with no multiple choice and two 1 page responses. Two 1 page responses assignments but she gives you the material to formulate your opinion. One power point presentation but it's through email. You can pass without reading the textbook and skipping a few classes but it's on you to understand the material for the exams.
The lectures were simultaneously informative as well as interesting and engaging, with very little bias toward any school of thought, but rather presented a variety of perspectives. The homework assignments were concise and applied to what would be tested. If you are majoring in PLS take her, I am not and it was still enjoyable.
Knows what she is talking about, but class is entirely lecture based. She barely writes notes so I recommend you record the class to go back and catch things you missed. Tests are essays and defining vocabulary- not too hard because essays are usually more opinion based but you have to know the vocabulary well. 4 exams and 4 one-page responses.
Doesn't use powerpoints, all lectures are just her speaking. Writes occasional notes on the board, but you have to take your own notes most of the time. Tough class, requires a lot of critical thinking and a lot of reading. If you're a visual learner, don't take her.
Took International Relations I online and I do not recommend taking her class. She is an extremely hard grader and doesn't quite seem grasp what a thesis statement is. Tests are ok, but you need to know the vocabulary since it's not multiple choice. One page assignment due every week which was a nuisance. dont take this class if you want an A.
Although she is a tough grader, she is a great teacher. I have learned so much and my knowledge expanded. I can not recommend her highly enough.
Her lectures are amazing given her experience in the field. Doesn't require a lot of reading and assignments. Her test are fairly easy if you follow her instructions and analyze the question fully.
PLS 241 online was a lot to take in at first, but it is a manageable class in the end. Reading is the only way survive. The IR textbook will be your best friend throughout this course. No study guides for exams. She is lenient about the discussion boards, but has expectations for the one page responses. If you put in the work, you can get an A.
She's a tough grader and won't even round up your grade when it's so close to the next letter grade.
Very easy class to pass (provided you do the work), 4 tests throughout the semester, extremely simple, two 1-page assignments. Very easy. However, she is very biased (politically speaking) and you can easily tell what her political views are as she spends the class promoting them and insulting the other side, I just bit my tongue, and got a B :)
Online class wasn't that hard. Weekly papers and discussion posts required, posts were easy points, papers weren't that hard. Research paper, PowerPoint presentation were the most work but weren't terribly difficult. Exams were not that hard, but there was information that I did not find. Possibly because I did not read the textbook, still passed.
Super straightforward
The teacher did not know how to provide the access code link for the digital portion of the books we were required to purchase on REVEL. When I asked about it, she said that it was a bookstore issue, which it isn't. The department is in charge of selecting the book. The information for this should be accessible to both student and teacher.
Lecture based class, basically all class is her lecturing but she definitely knows what shes talking about makes it interesting. If you are a hands on/visual learner, don't take this class. 4 exams (essay based), 2 one page papers, and one Powerpoint (not a presentation). 2 textbooks, nothing assigned from them but I found them useful for studying.
Loved her class. she is a really great professor at teaching online courses. She challenges you, yet doesn't give a assignments that can't be completed easily and graded well if you read the material and apply yourself. If you take her courses, be very aware of the appropriate use of "I" as writing papers in first person is one of her pet peeves.
This professor does not have clear instructions and is not flexible in any way. The best professors are the ones that care if you understand the material. She is not one of those professors and clearly does this for a paycheck. There are good prof's out there, just take your time to find one and avoid Jill McKee
Generally knows what she's talking about, but is a mediocre teacher due to vague instructions and a lack of a solid curriculum.
Jill's class is very lecture heavy. She does not care if you understand the material. Final exam, she dropped the essays and made us write only on vocab words. She will not round. I ended with a 79.8 and she would not help me get to an 80. She does not care about her students. Take Professor Smith instead, he is not easy, but he is more caring.
This professor is extremely biased. When teaching about government and politics one should not reveal their personal views. Her criticism was not rooted in actual fact on a couple of assignments. This being an online class there was no point in trying to debate it. If you are a writer, then you will be fine.
Absolutely LOVE her. I took her for two different classes and taking her again. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't make her class you won't know what is going on. She is very accessible out of class. She has SO much experience. She is hands down my favorite professor. I am disappointed by these reviews because she's amazing
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. Every week she assigned us A ton of work that would take me days of sitting down and doing nothing but study. She is a tough grader and very hard-to-reach. Every week she gives slides, tons of reading from two textbooks, 2 discussions, and 2 one page responses and long articles. Absolutely the WORST.
If you want questions answered by her you will not get them. Worst experience with a professor I have had. I would not take her class again. Her exams made no sense and essay papers neither. Very tough grader even if it was worth a lot of points.
I took her for international relations and she was pretty good. I think she might grade a little too harshly but nothing too bad. I took the 6 week summer session and had 2 one page papers and 2 discussion posts due every week. There was a 4 page research paper at the end. Also 2 one page papers about two movies.
She is a pretty average professor. Not too tough. A lot of writing for assignments and tests though
She assigns a lot of reading for 5pt discussions. The amount of work for the amount of points she gives, is not worth it. Reading 3 articles for 5pts is a waste of time. Even the one page 20pt papers aren't worth the read. But most of the class is the one page papers. I'm glad I don't have to take to use this professor again.
Absolutely loved her class. She's super knowledgeable on the topics she teaches and has great experience in Foreign policy. 10/10 would take again
Prof McKee is super reachable via canvas inbox. Willing to review papers and assignments before submission. Expects you to follow the 1 page argument format for papers, but you'll get the format down quick. Weekly discussion boards are super straightforward with her. Textbook is very helpful with term definitions.
I have taken this professor for 3 PLS classes. 120, 241/242. She is by far my favorite professor at NVCC. She is extremely knowledgable and has had a lot of experience in the Political field. This course requires a good amount of work but its fun and definitely worth it. I have learned more in her classes than I have anywhere else.
Its a though class if you take 8 week class. There are lots of papers, the midterm and finals are not cumulative. Study and you will pass! Overall I would take the class with the teacher if needed.
Really good professor, textbook was helpful but you can pass without it.
I submitted a review on Sep 21st, 2020 saying I'd take her again and I did. She's a very easy to understand professor and once you understand the concepts she wants you to understand everything gets easy
Tough grader, a lot of work for her class. Smart and will teach you, unlike some professors who deviate and do not stay on track. Did not round to an A knowing our school does GPA on a letter scale and not a number scale.
