I have Jill this semester, and she is literally THE BEST. I've always struggled with science courses and she's actually helping me understand what we're learning. The class is easy, and she lets you choose between taking tests or doing group projects instead. I highly recommend her. It's an easy A and good Miami Plan course. Enjoy rocks for jocks!
Easiest teacher at Miami. To be honest I don't think I learned one thing but is an extremely easy A. Alot of the points come from in class material, so show up to class. Take home final, and no regular tests all projects. She is extremely nice.
I dreaded going to the class. It had absolutely NO structure and was all over the place. We only had project and group work that had nothing to do with what was going on. Easy A, but incredibly frustrating.
Really easy. has no organizational skills what so ever. EASY A. I recommend her to all the people that i talk to. 1 group project and 1 other project. she lets you out early nearly every day
Great lady. She is really chill and doesn't assign alot of work. you get to go on field trips to peffer park and stuff like that. all open notes tests, definitely recommend this class for sure
This course covers everything from environmental to National Park History. Overall the class is pretty easy if you attend and get help when needed. There is one group project and a few graded homeworks. She does take you on a field trip.
1 group project, 3 tests that are open note, and a few graded assignments. Tests are hard. Overall not a bad class for a 100 level. Would take her again.
Go to class because she does do in class work and homeworks that will help you with your grade. Exams are open note but not easy. Final was only 5% of overall grade.
Easiest Class at Miami. If you go to class and have somewhat of a brain, you will get an A. Tests are open notes. The final is open notes and the homework is easy. What more could you ask for?
Boring class, don't need to show up to get an A.
She is really nice but extremely confusing with directions to the big project and all homework assignments. She also gave a 10 point assignment on Green Beer Day and told no one before-hand.
I highly advice not taking this class. She can be very unprofessional, never responds to emails, and reads strictly from the powerpoint everyday. Very bland and boring
Tests were impossible, but she's not bad to look at.
Easy. All you have to do is show up and you'll do fine.
Migs is a wonderful teacher! She lectures from ppts everyday but always makes them interesting. She puts the ppts online, but take notes in class and tests will be easier. DO THE READINGS. All tests are open note, you'll be able to find every answer in the book/ppts/your notes if you put in the effort throughout the semester. Attendence advised!
Not helpful at all, she assumes you are a professional at the subject. All lecture, reads word for word from powerpoint. Not a good professor.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. Classes are so disorganized, she's very disrespectful to students, and nothing she said was very clear. As a 100 level course I am clearly not an expert on geology but she expected us to be. Her tests have nothing to do with anything you learn in class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
The worst class I've taken in my college career. Previous posters said this was an easy a, but I took her the semester she decided to be tough. Extremely disorganized and immature. The tests were impossible, even with the book, the power points, and my notes. Made us study and take a quiz and then throw it away without grading it. DO NOT TAKE HER
All tests on online which sounds like it would be great. Even after googling every answer and having the book, powerpoints, and worksheets in front of you, they are so hard. Proably took attendance twice this semester so it sucks if you weren't there. Beyond annoying to listen to in a lecture. I have a better grade in Calc than in this class.
Took this thinking it'd be an easy class. Nope, this is my worst grade. Her tests are so hard even though we can use our notes. You finish a test thinking you did alright, just to find out you actually got a C. Definitely do not recommend.
Easiest Geology Miami Plan. Don't need to show up, tests are online and are really easy. She rocks as a teacher and if any points are lost she will give them if you visit her during office hours.
Extremely boring class. Tests covered material that wasn't covered in class. Textbook readings didn't follow along well with class. Wouldn't recommend unless you need it for Miami Plan.
All the exams are online, and she gave you a re-take the semester I had her. My advice-take this class with a buddy, take the exams together, then go to her office hours with a printed-out version of the exam and she'll tell you all the questions you got wrong and what you should've put. Use this to your advantage if she gives retakes again!
Took this class as a requirement for graduation and I'm pretty sure its tougher than a lot of physicschemistry courses. The workload itself isn't overwhelming, its how unclear the content is taught. Good luck keeping up with her lectures. And if you think online tests will be a breeze- think again. THEY ARE IMPOSSIBLE. Studying can't even save you
Makes a 100 level class into a 300. Unless you enjoy Geology, never consider taking her class. Not much homework, only a few tests but the homework assignments are confusing and the tests are impossible even though you're allowed to use your book, google, etc. Just find something else to take.
Boring lectures, but all power points are online. Going to class is not mandatory. Even though tests are online they are very difficult and oftentimes was information never covered in class or in the book. Do not recommend this class if you want an easy A.
The expectations in this class are incredibly high for a Miami Plan Course. The exams are online, but impossible to pass even with your book, notes, and google. Migs is an incredibly frustrating teacher who shows little respect towards her students. She acts like her students are geology majors. Don't take this course to fulfill basic requirement.
This class is much harder than a 100 level miami plan should be. Migs is unorganized and tries to cover way too much information in a semester. Exams are online and still incredibly difficult. My GPA suffered due to this class.
Miggs, is awesome. I learned a lot in her class and plan on taking her again for another geology course.
Very nice and excited about geology. She tries to make a big class seem small. She covers a lot of content so if you don't keep up you will loose out. She is fair but I must admit I wanted an easier A.
Very enthusiastic about geology but would have liked to have more time to go over material.
She makes clear in the beginning that you are going to have to do more than just memorize material. I found out the hard way that if you just work to understand your reading and listen in class then her tests are much easier.
If you can keep up wit the work you are fine. She expects you to do work if you want any chance of a good grade. Not a lot of points to be had--so don't miss them!!
Ok, it is geology and how likes that except for maybe Migs. She tries to make it fun but some of that stuff is just plain BORING! She makes you work for your grade but never turns you away for help.
She isn't very clear about anything. Everything on Niihka is very hard to find. She never responds back to emails. You'll have to actually try in this class if you want a good grade. Tests are somewhat impossible
This course is incredibly difficult for a 100 level class. Although Mignery is extremely passionate about the subject and very knowledgeable, she's a bad teacher. She is very unclear about everything from subject matter to the class schedule. The tests are online but extremely difficult. Wouldn't recommend unless you are a geology enthusiast.
Online tests that are seemingly impossible--but they are online. She's really chill and funny, but you can tell she doesn't always want to be there. Everyone skips her lectures and I feel bad for that, she deserves more respect : Kind of a boring class but it is "rocks with jocks" and she makes it that simple.
Mignery came off as kind of snobby at first. She got better as the semester went on. You really don't need to go to class. Online Exams are kind if tuff, but you can easily work on them with others. Don't buy the text book. I never opened it and got an A. Get a good group for the poster project or else you will be stuck with a lot of work.
Her tests, although online, could not be googled and were hard to find in the books or lectures. You're assigned a group project and have to do assignments on every project presented. Don't take this class. "Rocks for jocks"? Not even close.
Professor Mignery is a decent professor who is passionate about the material she teaches. She will help you if you ask. The class itself is somewhat advanced for a 100 level course and requires a lot of effort and time.
I did not like this class but Miggs was a good professor. She is extremely passionate about her subject matter but this class was way to hard to be considered 100 level.
This class is not hard, Migs makes it easy to understand and enjoyable. The exams are the only thing that is hard but there is a lot of other work that helps boost your grade.
She is a very nice professor and seems to care about students. I took this class because it was supposed to be easy, and it was pretty easy. Reading is basically optional but helps a ton. Her lectures are kinda boring, but the tests are very easy. She uses lots of questions that she specifically goes over in class.
Migs is a great instructor and I think probably one of the easiest of the GLG111 professors. Take her. She genuinely wants you to learn and is not intimidating at all. She will tell you everything you need to know, but I must say the exams are what hurt me. I would have gotten an A, but they're pretty difficult, and if you coast, you'll get a B.
Migs is a nice person and is knowledgeable about the topics but is not the best at teaching. The lectures and book info is not reflected properly in the tests. I studied for hours for the final and got a D- as an A typical student. The one good thing about her is you can do poorly on the tests and work hard/do extra credit and still get good grade.
a very nice people.
Migs is awesome. Really knows what she's talking about and she's passionate about it. Kind of funny, but not a comedian. As long as you do the reading and take good notes, you should do well in her class. The content isn't that hard.
take this prof/class.
She is nice enough, but not all that accessible outside of class (rarely answers emails). This class is also too hard for a 100-level class, in my opinion - I took it for Miami Plan and it was NOT worth all the effort and was my worst grade that semester. If you aren't a science person, find a different class.
I took this for honors and Miami Plan. It was NOT worth it. The class was unorganized and we rarely knew what subject we were even discussing. Her syllabus was mediocre at best and she rarely gave straight out information. Also, we rarely talked about the actual National Parks, even though the course is named after them. Nice person, bad professor.
I am taking this class for my major, but I would not recommend this class. She rarely replies to emails (she said this herself), has no syllabus, doesn't make due dates clear, and is not understanding with illnesses days. The class is all lecture with random assignments thrown in that don't pertain to the lecture. This class is not worth it.
Not worth it. Took as a Miami plan and was my worst grade yet. Lectures are confusing, impossible tests and she does not reply to emails. Lots of in class assignments that you need to be present for but she can be understanding about missing/sick. Nice person just a very tough class- especially for a 100 level.
good professor, but exams are not super easy and heavily relied on textbook material. made class interactive which helped with lectures but just not a super enjoyable class. she was a little difficult to understand at times but very accessible after class
Jill is not very organized and the class set-up is kind of confusing. However, she is really nice and she makes geology pretty simple. I loved the trip this honors class took to Mammoth Cave and the activities we did outside. Great way to get a Miami Plan science out of the way.
Migs was a great geology professor, she was so funny and loved what she did. She constantly worked to involve everyone and made an effort to tell jokes often. I enjoyed her teaching and she was very candid about grading/policies. In order for her to know you, you should go to office hours.
This class was entirely too difficult for an intro level course; she never explained anything in depth & sort of just expected you to understand; considering almost all the material was so abundant & difficult, the fact that she did this made it difficult to do well. Exams are difficult and she just tells us to use google for almost everything
Good person, bad professor. This prof makes this class too hard to be a 100 intro course. Im typically an A student & yet I struggled through it. Course is unorganized and tests are much harder than the info gone over in class. Random assignments are put into test category & students are left unaware of it. One of the worst classes Ive ever taken.
Mignery had unrealistic expectations on the tests as they were too hard for a 100 level course. 1 assignment decreased my grade by 7 percent b/c she filed it in the test category with no actual reasoning behind that filing. She was inaccessible outside of class, I sent her emails & visited her office with no response. This is not "rocks for jocks"
My 200 level Geology class that I had to take was easier than GLG 111. For a intro class, this class was way too hard. The assignments didn't make sense and the material was just rushed through. She just expects you to know it and if you don't she says try google. The exams were hard and went way more into depth than what was presented in lecture
The class was okay at best. Jill, or "Migs" often was behind on a lot of things, didn't understand how to use some of the technology and often used my class as guinea pigs to test random assignments and still graded the horrible attempts. Her tests often were much more applied than what she taught us. You can make it through if you participate.
I'm typically a good student but Jill made this 100-level class unnecessarily difficult. We were all constantly confused even if we read or took notes. She is a very nice person but the course was pretty bad. I appreciated her effort to make a boring topic interesting, but she didn't understand the tech she used and was generally not that helpful.
Easy science class for Miami Plan. If you come to class and study, you'll get an A. Lecture heavy which is boring at times but Migs is funny and gets excited about rocks to keep it entertaining. Lots of in-class assignments with people near you to make sure you come to class but they're easy. 3 tests which are kind of hard but always curved a lot.
I enjoyed this course more than I thought I would. I took it for a basic MPF credit and I ended up really liking it! Migs is really awesome because she incorporates different learning styles rather than just lecturing. The e-book is very helpful and you need it for reading quizzes; interactive options. I found it hard to keep up if I missed class.
Her test are pretty difficult, but there is a lot of easy assignments the help balance the grade. If you do above average on all tests and do all the assignments you should get an A.
One of the worst I've had (taken in fall). Tries and fails to engage the class; always telling us to travel more (wish I could). I struggled through most of the class but luckily she offered a lot of extra credit and I still ended up with an A. An ok Miami Plan/CAS Req. class that I would otherwise never take. Lots of textbook reading + worksheets.
Migs is awesome. I took her class asynchronous this semester so it was definitely reading heavy. She holds optional zoom help sessions where she goes over the powerpoint for the week and helps with the homework. Super understanding and doesn't make you memorize a bunch of information. Almost all quizzes and tests are open note/book. Highly recommen
I've never had a teacher care more about her students, that being said this class is hard. You will need to watch the lectures, do the reading, and watch the videos.
I never heard or saw the actual professor. Alexia Rojas led my class and was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed how she taught things and was always available if we needed help. I can not say much about Mrs. Mignery tho.
Migs was a great professor and understood the circumstances of illness and COVID this fall with a 200 person lecture. She failed to get class participation often and her clothing options are questionable. Showing up to class helped my grade and be able to understand the topic more but attendance is not taken. A lot of in class assignments
GLG 111 is a total cakewalk. You don't even need to show up to class and as long as you do the assignments on time you'll be around a 90. I would recommend going to class because she gives you the homework answers, but you can do fine without attending. Her exams are very challenging, however, and they make up 40% of your grade. Study for them.
Migs is a solid professor in the geology department, she's clearly passionate about what she teaches which makes her lessons better.
"Would you take this professor again?" Yes I would. I am a Business student and took both GLG111 with Migs and GLG307 for the Thematic sequence. Migs is down to Earth, but kinda cringe at times. She genuinely cares and rewards those who show up to class. Attendance is taken randomly throughout the semester. Key to success: Attend the lectures.
Jill isn't the worst but if you miss class, she makes it really hard for you to make up the stuff. Don't skip and sit by smart people that you can complete assignments with. Work decreases points FAST if you turn it in late so don't slip. I'm not a huge fan of the class but there's a few "fun" assignments at least.
If you do the assignments and show up to class this should be an easy A. The exams are open notes which makes things a lot less stressful. Would recommend. However, attendance is mandatory, she will give in-class assignment that is worth a portion of your grade and difficult to make up. About half of the activity involves outdoor which is a pain.
Migs is a great woman and great prof. She is passionate about what she teaches and it is not hard to get an A in this class. If you go to classes regularly and don't mind taking notes, she is a great professor. She is always willing to answer questions. You need to attend class on many days for in class assignments. Attendance is not taken tho.
Lots of lectures, if you go to class everyday and do the assignments, you will get an A. There were no papers, but she had quizzes that she would give us in class but went over them at the end of class if you stayed to get the correct answers. She is super nice and friendly and this is an overall very easy course.
I don't love geology, but Professor Mignery is super funny. The class itself is pretty lecture heavy/note taking. There's a few fun things where you go outside. She is super chill, but don't mess around too much. Pay attention to the material and try to participate.
I liked Professor Mignery! The class is mostly lectures, with the occasional group activity/quiz. She is very knowledgeable about the topics and keeps things interesting. I would definitely recommend attending class or field trips, as she often gives out extra credit or goes over the answers. The exams are mostly open note too.
I wish I had taken the honors course. Prof is kind and tries to make things funny but gets frustrated with lack of participation from class. Really easy as long as you turn things in. Open note exams with multiple attempts. Class is boring because no one responds to her attempts to encourage participation. Needed materials posted.
Lectures built for children. Only way I could understand them was from reading the optional textbook. Attendance not mandatory but if you miss class you'll be spending hours on the assignments. Extremely boring and unengaging, even when we go outside. Terrible field trip. Next time just hire some bus drivers instead of forcing students to drive.
Migs was incredibly knowledgeable and caring. The material could get difficult, sure, but if you engaged during lectures (listened and participated) and asked questions when needed, you'd be fine. The field trips were fun and unique. She let us have ample opportunities to learn in various ways. She was open to helping with class but also with life.
Everything is avereged. i wanted to die every time i was forced to walk into her room. dont take it save yourself.
She is a good professor, but expects everyone to participate and gets frustrated when you don't. She does a lot of in-class assignments but usually will help or give away the answers. Exams (2) are open note and taken wherever you want. Her assignments helped me understand the topics, but reading the textbook sections she provides will help too.
Jill is an awesome professor. If you show up to class and do the assignments, you can get an A. Put effort into class and you will be fine. Outdoor activities may suck sometimes but that's the only bad part of the class.
Knows no one in the class is taking it for a major. Just a Miami plan class. Super easy not mandatory to go to class
She is a good professor. No one in this class is taking it for their major, just for the Miami plan. SO easy if you just do the work. She says attendance is mandatory but you don't need to go as long as you can figure out the in-class assignments outside of class. I also never used the textbook so you probably don't need it. Only 2 exams.
Lasted on day in the class... randomly throws a field trip to a cave in Kentucky that takes up the whole day. The drive was said to be about 8 hours there and back. No exceptions to skipping the trip that would take up the whole day.
I'm think she's evil? Mignery repeatedly assigned long, intensive, and complicated assignments worth a lot of points and then would tell those of us in class to just submit a selfie. Didn't matter if you were just sick. Her assignments' instructions never made any sense; everyone was consistently confused. Her lectures are so boring. Don't take.
Migs was great to have as a professor, she really cared about making sure that we learned the material. She loves geology, and it is very easy to tell, with that she does go in depth on geology and it's not always the intro-level information that would be expected. The field trip to Mammoth Caves was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.
Migs's passion for her field really shines through in her lectures and I had a blast on the field trip. Homework load isn't bad but I did need to study hard to understand concepts on some of her pop quizzes and to prep for the midterm; some of them weren't discussed in class/on the slides. Class is lecture heavy with a few group projects mixed in.
She's a good professor, but if you heard people say glg111 is really easy, this is not the professor they're talking about. If you come to class, she lectures, then there's an activity which she gives you the answers to if you stay. Midterm and final aren't cumulative, it's open-note but it has to be handwritten. It's hard if you dont know geology.
Really easy class. If you go and stay to the end she gives answers on every quiz and hw. Final and mid term are 40% but open hand written note exams. Also curves it and let us take the midterm twice.
Super interested in the topic and excited to share. Very heavy on projects/in-class activities. In-class activities were somewhat hard to follow along and were set up on Canvas strangely. Projects/activities were mostly group work. Show up with a positive attitude and be willing to give some effort to work/projects and you will do fine.
Professor Mignery's geology class is lecture-heavy but engaging. The field trips are a blast, and she makes complex topics accessible. I found unstuck AI super helpful for studying the material before exams.
This class is the easiest class I've ever taken. No exams at all. All in-class activities you will get 100% on if you attend class. Easy A. I recommend.
Definitely don't take this class just to fulfill a Miami Plan requirement. Attendance wasn't mandatory but there were in-class assignments that were locked with an access code given in class. Professor doesn't respond to emails and doesn't seem to care about her students.
Easy A if you show up every time. Note sheets are allowed for exams. Graded classwork can't be completed if you don't go to class.
Could be easier to reach outside of class, but is helpful in class.
Lectures a lot but helps with activities in class. Can easily get 100% on any in class activity or homework if you go to class.
Great Professor all around. Teaches material very clearly, never homework. Lectures everyday. Never took attendance, rarely went to class and had a 110%. I would definitely take this class again and I highly recommend, Its the easiest class I've ever taken.
Jill is hands-down a fantastic professor. She's very chill. She gives good lectures and provides a lot of information for exams. I've taken two of her classes: GLG 111 and GLG 307, which is water in society; there's no exam, so I recommend taking that class. Participation matters because of how much she gives in classwork, but it's an easy class.
The best class I took Freshman year.
Attendance is not specifically mandatory, she will sometimes give unannounced assignments in class as well as attendance checks every once in a while, so it's best if you go to every class. She also gives a bunch of bonus points and extra credit opportunities for those who show up to class. Class is very easy with a few tests. 100% would recommend
