Really cool, chill teacher. Doesn't care if you txt, etc. She speaks really well, not too fast, like other professors who get lost in their own thoughts. She really knows her stuff.
Dr. Seaman is a really laid back teacher. She treats you like an adult, and her software engineering assignments really help you understand and apply the material. Her tests were difficult for me, but only because I didn't study the material outside of class. I still got a B. It is a writing intensive class, and she grades on accuracy and clarity.
Dr. Seaman is a sweetheart. If you'd like to receive a B, this is likely the class for you. It seems that whether you put in a tons of effort or just enough, you'll get a B. While she is very laid-back, her expectations for an A, are not. SW Eng is a little like a English class where the grading is subjective so it may or may not work for you.
Best CS teacher at Texas State, I took her for data strucs and SW engineering
I've taken Dr. Seaman for CS 1428 and Software Engineering, and I highly recommend her. Her lectures are straightforward and she gives you all the information you need, even if she can be a little dry at times. She expects you to put in the work to earn your grade but her assignments are reasonable. She also has lots of industry experience.
Can be a bit boring as others have said, but what can you expect from CS lectures...? Get real.
Very helpful to students . this was my toughest course till the time i have taken it she has guided us through out with ease .
SW Engr with Dr. Seaman seemed like a really easy course on the surface until the SRS. That was tough, but she was helpful and available. Very good, organized professor. Spend time on this one. It's not a hard class, but you have to you take it seriously. After graduation, I realized you really do need to know all this stuff as a developer.
She is a lot better than others out there just watch out for her assignments. She gives you a week which seems okay unless you have a lot on your plate. If any part of your program does not compile it is an automatic zero no questions asked. Her lectures are pretty straightforward but you will find yourself checking the time a lot.
She is an excellent teacher. Her slides give you exactly what you need to learn the material. Her assignments can be tough because you only get a week to do them but she's available during office hours and gives excellent feedback. She makes the effort to get to know your name. One of the finest instructors I've had the pleasure of teaching me.
Jill is a great teacher. I really enjoy her classes. The material is not easy though- not because of her. You do have to put in the time. Exams are a majority of the grade so make sure you study the most for these, and you should be good. They are hard though so start studying a few days before.
Jill Seaman in my opinion is one of the best CS professors at Texas State University. For every chapter she explains everything in a matter that someone who just started out could understand, and keep up with. She is extremely fair, and is willing to help anyone who asks. She has lots of quizzes so attendance is mandatory.
Dr. Seamam has years of real software development experience. She left the private sector and started teaching because she wanted to. She has a passion for teaching CS students how to program. Her programming assignments are tough, and so are her exams, but she does everything she can to break the information down to your level so you can do well.
I wish Dr. Seaman taught every CS class we have to take!! I love her teaching techniques and I love that she keeps things pretty organized. Her exams are fair as long as you keep up with the program assignments, attendance, and the quizzes. TAKE HER. You will learn and you will feel like you got your money's worth.
Get ahead early and then coast into the final
Her Lectures are very well done. She cares about her students. She is pretty laid back on her assignments. Her tests are difficult if you don't prepare yourself. Would take again.
I cannot recommend Professor Seaman highly enough. She is one of the few faculty with industry experience, and it shows. She teaches thoroughly but posts slides online. She isn't absurdly hard on grading, but her projects make sure you learn and retain the information. Best CS prof at the university, in my opinion.
Extremely competent and helpful. Learning from her was a great experience. Not an easy class, but if you study and do your homework you can get an A. Her lectures were well organized and clear. She patiently answered questions. Her expectations of you are laid out from day one. All around a boon to Texas State.
Pay attention and do the home works. Read the book. This is a freshman class with a good lecturer. If you slack you will fail but blame no one but yourself. Retake the class only if you recognizes that if you put in the work you will pass. Otherwise reassess what your goals and ambitions are, maybe CS isn't your real passion. Any student can pass.
This was an introductory class CS 1428 so there will be a lot of non-cs majors attending. If you have any prevalent knowledge of CS you will be fine. If a non-cs attends then you have to go at it hard will be difficult for yall. At least that's what my non-cs classmates have told me. Anyways great professor highly recommend.
This is a difficult course but she does a great job explaining, so pay attention and you will do fine.
She is a great professor! Really good at explaining, and go to office hours for help! She was super helpful in office hours and not scary!
Jill is great! Her lectures can be kind of monotone but she keeps it interesting with class conversations and square cap questions. Reading the textbook helps, but go to office hours and let her get to know you. I find in her large classes I feel more comfortable asking her questions during lectures because I go to her office hours. Take Jill!!
Jill is awesome. CS 2 was a tough class, but she has a clear grading criteria. The exams aren't bad. If you do the projects and review before the exams you will do well. The projects aren't easy and they take time, so definitely don't procrastinate on them! Jill is caring, gives great feedback, and clearly has a passion for teaching . Take her!
Very hard exams. Exams are different from her slides Not good TA that grade the assignments Not recommended
She is a poor lecturer, her grading rubric is even worse. The class average for programs is often below 70 , Exams are extremely hard. Not recommended.
Was an okay class. If there had been any better professors I would have taken them. You will definitely have to work hard for an A in her class.
If you take her class youll notice that most students are on their phones or just dont show up at all. These are the same kids who are in the groupme asking for help the night before a project is due and complaining about how bad the prof is... Guys... There is a reason CS is one of the highest paying degrees you can get. Enjoy your art degree!
I never studied nor spent more than 30 minutes on a programming assignment and received an A (I do program as a hobby). She test for knowledge and doesn't rely of "gotcha" questions with syntax. She is a great professor, always helpful in office hours, and actually cares that you know the material not so much the syntax. Take her over others.
Dr. Seaman is a wonderful professor. Quizzes and tests can be tough, but you will learn a lot by studying for them. The programs are interesting as well. In class questions are worth a decent percentage of the grade, so paying attention in class is important. Dr. Seaman is quick at responding to emails and is very caring. Definitely take her class.
Dr. Seaman is a perfect teacher. She always explains very clearly and is very patient to answer questions. Her slides are very clear and readable. Her quizzes, assignments, and exams help me a lot. I am more and more interested in programming after taking her class. I do recommend her class
Prof. Seaman is solid. Lectures can be monotone but that's my only complaint, and a very minor one at that. Her lecture material is so fantastic that I find myself referring to it in later CS courses. I learn better by teaching myself and Prof. Seaman made that incredibly accessible. Such a contrast from some of the CS1428 teachers. Great class.
Jill is a good lecturer and her class is not very difficult. The programming assignments are the easiest way to learn the material and the tests are surprisingly easy. If you are passionate for Computer Science you will not struggle in her class as long as you put in the work.
Seaman was great, though I wish the class size had been smaller. Class is easy if you do the readings & pay attention. Readings are due after almost every class & include regular exercises so you can practice/test your understanding. Sometimes the graders will make a mistake but it was never enough to really impact my grade. I highly recommend her.
I had never coded before and by taking notes of the online material, I didn't even need to go to class (I did anyway). I got mono, missed three weeks and a test. Still made an A on the next exam without studying. She replaced my missing test with my final grade. If I hadn't gotten sick, I would have made an A. You can too if you take it seriously.
I didn't mind her class. Her programming assignments were a good challenge, and she taught the information well, even though her lectures are very monotone and mundane. There's small reading assignments every night that are easy. I went in with previous CS experience in high school and another university, so I breezed through this class.
I took CS 1428 and CS 2308 both instructed by Jill, and while lectures can be a little monotonous, she is an amazing instructor. Gives great feedback, explanation of concepts are thorough without being overwhelming, and material/grading/requirements for assignments are explicitly outlined. If you want an A, you have to put time into the material.
Lots of homework given out. Important you pay attention to what you are working on. The side notes help to learn many tips in becoming a stronger programmer. Important to practice prior worked on code to understand the reason for every piece of code. If you do not do these advised tasks you will fail. Regardless, Professor Seaman was very helpful.
Dr. Seaman is great but her class is full of ups and downs. she is a fair grader and gives opportunities for her student to perform well in her test. The first 3 test is 20% if your grade. The final is 20%. Make sure you attend SI sections, practice your zy books, and do your homework you would do well. The class was tough as a beginner in coding.
Dr. Seaman's CS 1428 class was very clearly structured. Every week there are online textbook assignments due on different days of the week. 0 experience in coding is needed to get a great grade (like I had) you just have to put in the work. Dr. Seaman's lectures are very thorough and example heavy, and she really knows what she's talking about.
Professor Seamen is professional, knowledgeable, and a no-nonsense teacher. By no-nonsense I mean that she takes her job seriously, and does her utmost to give you an education that befits the amount of money you're paying to be here. Not an easy class, but Professor Seamen gives you the resources to do well.
By far better than my other CS teachers. Lectures are recorded, the grades all over many different exams and projects, so doing bad in one thing is not too detrimental.
This professor can be a little monotone at times, but overall she is a wonderful computer science professor. I switched to Seamann from Reichenau because of how terrible Reichenau was and it made a world of difference. If you do the assignments and study a little, you should get an easy A and you'll be able to actually code at the end of the class!
Professor Seaman was sweet and outlined exactly what you had to do to succeed in class. Always do your participation + challenge activities + MSPS and you will pass the class. Does clicker questions during class that can boost your grade. Goes over tests and MSPS that help your understanding of the material. Overall highly recommend!
She is easily the best computer science professor at Texas State. Clear assignments, clear lectures, excellent organization, and very straight-forward assignments. I can't recommend this professor enough, especially compared to some of the other CS professors at TX State like that awful Reichenau person.
Prof. Seaman is an amazing professor I wouldnt wanna take this class if it wasnt with her. Very fair to the students pushes a little hard on coding assignments but I learned a lot from it. Dont be afraid to ask for help especially with classmates, work together! SI sessions were super helpful. Tests are super important only 3 all year.
Dr. Seaman is a great professor. She uses class time to lecture on keywords and definitions, but also works through specific coding examples. A great professor.
Explains topics very thoroughly and genuinely wants people to understand the topics. Small clicker question quizzes are given during class to help reinforce topics.
She explains things very well and between the required online textbook assignments, in class quizzes, and her lectures she is super thourough and it's honestly hard to get lost in her class. Lectures can be pretty boring though.
Overall she set up her course pretty well, the expectations were very clear from the start. We used an online textbook called zybooks that can somewhat teach you the course itself. She had great lectures, very good at making coding concepts seem so simple to someone very new to coding. Also very laid back and respectful person, never had an issue
Honestly the best CS professor I've ever had, her lectures are very clear and very helpful. She provides a lot of code examples that she uploads and encourages us to use them for coding assignments, and she also encourages working with your classmates on homework, plus we could take quizzes with a partner as well.
she does not have a heavy accent but she does speak in monotone. She will not have any makeups or leniency regardless of your situation, even in an emergency. If you miss even 1 class and can not keep up you will fail. Fast lectures with almost all being coding and little explanation to the coding
I love this professor, absolutely amazing, I would take all her classes if I could, she explains everything so well and takes her time explaining everything to the class. I would recommend her to anyone, with or without experience, don't even think about it just take her class!
Nothing like 1428 don't go into intro 2 thinking its going to be easy like intro 1. Squarecaps can save your grade so GO TO CLASS and do them. Her notes and coding examples online help on assignments and she is super willing to help. Assignments REALLY test your coding skills so get ready. 10x better than other cs professors so cherish her.
One of the best CS prof in TXST.
Love her and will be taking her for next semester too! Lectures can be boring, but its comp-sci, so what do you really expect? She's not super strict grading so long as she sees you know the concepts, and she's got a dry sense of humor that makes class stress-less. Always open to questions being asked or re-explaining. Definitely take her class!
Professor Seaman's class is one where you'll need to put in the work to pass. She provides many coding examples to assist with programming assignments. She also provides questions to help prepare for tests and is overall very helpful if you ask for help. I will be repeating her class but she is arguably one of the best CS professors at TXST.
One of the best CS professors at Texas State
I had the opportunity to take her for Foundations I and II, she is by far my favorite CS teacher, she made this class easy because she explains things in such great detail, class is very organized, grading is fair and she cares and prepares you well for all the projects and exams. Love her, I wish she taught more classes, absolutely recommend her!
Professor Seaman is a really good professor. She is very passionate about comp sci and stands by her syllabus more than her word lol. Please take her. I came to Texas State with no experience coding, and I am confident in my coding abilities!
I love Dr. Seaman, she is the nicest and most concise professor I've had! She explains everything so clearly and though she is a little hard to reach through email, she always answers questions after class or during office hours. I love her!!!!!
Amazing intro to CS class. Attendance is required, but she takes it when we answer these online questions she opens during class time. The homework assignments are not bad, there are just a lot of them to get enough practice with programming.
The course gets into much more difficult topics, but she does a great job at teaching and answering any student questions. Paying attention in class is a must to do good in this course, but she posts all of her code and lecture slides to Canvas.
Anyone with prior CS experience will fly through this class like its nothing. All you have to learn is C++. Attendance isn't mandatory; however, it is enforced indirectly through Squarecap. Lectures are okay, but I guarantee you can find some better ones on YouTube. The main way to succeed in this class is by programming. Solve online problems.
Gives detailed program examples, but sometimes mumbles through explanations. Willing to answer questions. Exams are half multiple choice and half handwritten code. Style guidelines are not strict.
biggest thing is to just show up and do your work and you can get whatever grade you want in this class. the tests are pretty easy and if you are in class they should be a walk in the park for you
Great professor, I took her for 1408 as well and both classes were very straightforward and easy to understand. Just study for every quiz and exam and you'll be fine! Her lecture voice is a little monotone but other than that she was really helpful, I wish she taught some of the higher-level CS courses too!
She makes complex topics easy to understand through diagrams and in-class coding demos. Programming assignments are fun and really instill the material. People say she's monotone, but I appreciate her professionalism and dry sense of humor. Pay attention and do your own programming assignments and you'll have no problem getting an A
Dr. Seaman is seriously the best. I can't say enough positive things about her. The way she explains things just makes everything seem elementary, she is seriously amazing. Her lectures always have coding examples that can be accessed outside of class, and she will spend all her office hour with you if you're struggling with something!
I have experience in the field, so make of that what you will. Her lectures were fine; she made all of the slides and examples available on Canvas and was ample in answering questions. She utilizes zyBooks as the online textbook with embedded assignments, so as long as you read and complete the tasks, you will be fine.
Dr. Seaman does a good job of explaining hard topics, but her lectures can be a bit dry at times. She uses Squarecap which is an easy 10% of your grade if you attend class. She's very helpful during office hours and is willing to discuss your grade if you feel like she graded your work incorrectly. Overall a good professor who I would take again.
Dr. Seaman is the best professor I have had thus far at TXST. I've taken her for both 1428 and 2308, and her classes have been well-organized and very helpful in building a solid foundation for future CS classes. If you put in effort, attend her lectures, and practice using the programming assignments/quizzes, it's possible to get an A.
I'll let her current standing 5/5 speak for itself. One of the best professors at Texas State and a big part of the reason why I chose to deviate from what I was originally doing to go into Computer Engineering. Her passion and drive runs deep and is what fuels her absolutely amazing lectures
She's extremely monotone but knows what she's talking about. If you do good on Zybooks and the lab you will be alright. Her examples are very clear but if you know the material you could literally fall asleep in her class. Def recommend if C++ comes easy to you.
Dr. Seaman was an amazing professor! She does a great job of explaining course topics, and the course textbook is really helpful for practicing coding. I learned a lot during the course, and she is always willing to answer questions. If you attend class and study for exams, there is no reason you would fail her class.
Note: I did have a background in CS so I didn't find the class as hard as many of my first-timer friends did. She was very engaging and understanding, textbook was interactive and helped me understand some of the underlying concepts of CS. Attendance not mandatory but she uses Top Hat during class, which is part of your grade.
I mean she good and monotonous .. but she didn't round off my grade i gor 88.25 and would have gotten A if she had like increased to 89.52.................
Hard class. Final exam was like 30% of the whole class.. Tests are hard too
Be advised: -Teacher does not round grades no matter if you have a 78.5 -Tests are difficult even if you study -Lectures are very non engaging/ monotone -if you have never coded before do not take her it will not help -Recommendations for new people: Mr. Patrick CS 1428
Computer Science is not an easy course for some, you can not just sit around. She includes small quizzes throughout the lecture that help prepare for the test. She is very caring and will help if needed. You just have to stay on top of your assignments and study for the tests. She includes test reviews that help a ton. Love this teacher!
Great professor
Great prof. Look for comp sci, its pretty much up to you to learn it. With that said while she tends to be a bit mono tone she is good. Clear on her explanations. Class learning is mainly thru zybooks where you will self teach yourself. Safe bet to take her. Fun Fact: 38 percent failed the last test. Dont let that be you and PRACTICE CODING. Easy B
Most of the teaching is by yourself in online, interactive coding textbook isn't as bad as it sounds & actually felt fine if you actually go through & don't skip through it fast just for the grade. Exams are kinda hard usually average is a low 70, but she gives out an exam review & they help, lecture can be hard to focus b/c she is monotone but wtv
HUGE jump from 1428. Prof Seamen did a great job breaking down concepts and I definitely feel like I understand them now, however- there are a TON of assignments. from a quiz every week or two, with 3 tests and an final, programming assignments for each unit (6 or 7) and it may sound simple, but you MUST stay on top of it. very kind tho,I liked her
Quizzes are taken with a partner of your choice; the material is taught with PowerPoints on a screen so it's a bit wacky. Make sure you practice handwriting code for the quizzes and exams.
I had experience in C++ before coming into this class which made the class a breeze, which I recommend to do. She is an alright professor, as her lectures weren't as engaging or overly useful, however, the class is easy overall. Would recommend if you want an easy class.
Knowledgeable, helpful, and kind
Very easy but very boring. Weekly quizzes where you code on paper which makes no sense, and weekly coding assignments are longer than needed to ensure students are learning.
Honestly great teacher because a lot of teachers expect you to know coding already for some reason but not her she takes her time and will make sure you learn. I liked that attendance wasn't really mandatory cause you can just answer the tophats from anywhere. Tests are on paper which makes test really hard but only the written part.
Don't even bother takin' her class if you ain't been messin' with C++ for at least a year. Most the guys I know that got A's been doin' C++ for years, so it was easy as pie for 'em. But if all you done is that CS1 stuff, you're lucky to scrape by. This class is made for folks that already know their stuff. Rest of us just get left in the dust.
Pretty easy class but only if you previously practiced with C++. Otherwise, you'll have to put in a bit more effort. Participation is mandatory via TopHat, but if you grind out the projects, PAs and CAs, and do decent on quizzes, your grades should be fine.
This class is super easy. The lectures are amazing, but the assignments can take a while to finish. There are three exams, with half being multiple-choice questions and the other half coding questions.
She uses Top Hat for attendance, but you don't have to go to class for it. I've heard she's one of the few CS professors who is really good at what they do, and I agree with that. There are biweekly quizzes and three exams in total. She's also very helpful.
lectures are so boring and long. Out of 70 students, you'll only see about 3 or 4 girls. The rest are total nerds.
This class is super easy, and the professor is amazing. Definitely take a class with her
I took CS 1 and 2 with her and got A's in both. I wish she taught other courses too because I'd definitely take them with her. She's an awesome professor!
Standard intro coding class: fair number of programming assignments, but adequate time and instruction given. What tests cover is clearly stated and all gone over in class lectures (but reading the textbook is necessary for greater understanding--it's an interactive online textbook).
I mean, good professor, I personally did struggle, though. It ended up decent, but I learned CSII.
it's kinda hilarious how people are still flocking to CS to learn coding. We started with that low-level assembly stuff, then moved up to high-level languages—way more readable, right? Now, the ultimate programming language is basically English. Now even non-CS majors can whip up software just like us.
Dr. Jill Seaman was a great computer science professor. I went into the class knowing very little about programming and came out actually being able to design things and have a better understanding of the basics of C++. Sometimes her lectures were a bit difficult to follow, but I can see she cares a lot about our success.
Dr. Jill Seaman did a great job teaching CS2. The quizzes are intimidating, because they have a bit of a time limit but you also work on them in partners. Spend a good amount of time studying linked lists, because that material is pretty difficult.
This review is mostly for the class itself but as for Jill Seaman, she was a very good professor and clearly knows what she's doing. The only thing is her tone is very monotonic and hard to focus. The class is pretty tough if you have zero C++ experience so come to class with a lot of positive energy and willingness to learn. Exams are also hard.
if you haven't been doing computer science since high school don't take her class. she won't really go into detail with basic things that will matter in the long term. most of the people that ace this class have been doing comp sci since early high school so if you started in college good luck. quizzes about every other week.
plz don't take it with her she is reallllly bad. she made the class really hard and her exams are hard and long,
Jill Seaman is an average professor. Do as she says and you'll do well. She drops a few grades and allows group work on quizzes, which helps. Sometimes her quiz questions are hard to understand at first, but they make sense later. If you pay attention in class and review her slides, you'll do fine on exams and the final. She is blunt, not terrible.
Highly experienced and a great teacher, but the lectures get boring, and the exams are very tough. In class exam, no cheatsheets, no open books, nothing. 90+ means A and 80+ means B. Most of the grades depend on exams. Isn't very tough at grading still questions are tricky and scoring higher than 90 is very difficult.
David Better
Dr. Seaman is a great professor, as her lectures demonstrate that she is highly knowledgeable in all aspects of coding. If you worry that you may get lost in coding, it will be highly unlikely that you'll get lost in a class with her. Do the homework, attend the lectures, and you'll get above a C.
you could get the code completely right and she still will give you 10 points for it and you fail the test
Professor Seaman very clearly knows what she is talking about and is very knowledgeable in the subject. The class is very lecture heavy and with so many topics, it's very easy to get behind. Although attendance is not recorded, if you miss a class, it is so so so easy to fall behind. Tests are pretty hard with about 30-40% of the class failing.
