Lots of notes, willing to help outside of class time.
I failed so she could teach me again next semester.
too many notes in class, not enough examples, but still easy
It would be great if she went over hw questions at the start of every class
Great teacher, very helpfull...what a doll!
What a pushover! Sign up for a free A!
She knows the topic, she knows how to teach, she spoon feeds you math. She takes a slighty different approach to Math 222 than Jing Huang to make the topic at hand easier to understand.
No problem following along, she doesn't leave anyone behind, she's nice, fair and very pretty!
She made a supposedly hard class easy. Lots of notes and examples. Moderatly difficult assignments, fair exams.
A great teacher. Gave fair exams and assignments.
Great Teacher
Best math teacher I ever had. Exams come right out of class work so if you pay attention and do the homework you're crusing.
Great Teacher!!
She has the most beautiful eye's i've ever seen. Going to her office was really hard as I worried about forgetting my question. still she really is the best 222 prof. she actually cares that her students pass.
She's grad student turn prof.. Young, Hot what else can u ask for?
Jill talks math and I UNDERSTAND as if we were talking about hot guys over Lattes in a nice cafe. She is a very kind and warm person and I think that really helps. She is a HARD marker, but fair, and teaches so well it is easy to get an A...if you work.
very very good professor!!!teaches in a really clear way that you can follow along with during class.Even lets you out early if shes had caffeine cause she'll write fast :) Makes 222 a class I really liked going to and prepares you excellently for tests
Great prof. Clear and gives excellent notes. Is very helpful and concerned that everyone understands. Turns an obscure subject into something you can actually learn. Assignments are hard, but tests were fair. She's the best!
Makes math make sense. Does lots of examples and makes it easy to follow, and her tests are really fair. Great teacher!
Hottest teacher _EVER_
The best teacher to take Math 222 with. She is very helpful and very fair!
She's the best math teacher on campus, and she's gorgeous
The course is hard but she teaches it VERY well. She is really helpful and expresses ideas very clearly. Her tests are hard and she marks harshly as well. Overall, I enjoyed the class. The fact that she is a hottie definitely helps ;)
I'm in love :)
I was actually planning on droping the course (only needed 122) until the lectures started and Jill made all the material seem so easy - best instructor I've had.
She's not as clear and easy as others have said. The thing is that she's beautiful. That's why a lot of students exaggerate about her. She talks really fast, and sometimes its very hard to understand her. Even when you approach her, she explains it like you already know what she's talking about. Best prof is Gary without doubt. Very very clear
As an unbiased female, my opinion is that Jill is an excellent prof. She explains concepts clearly although her tests are quite difficult - considering she doesn't scale marks it would be more fair if the tests were a bit easier. Tons of notes in class is a slight drawback.(hand hurts) She's very helpful and I recommend taking a class with her.
Notes are lengthy but decent, lots of examples, tests were difficult but should be beneficial on final with multi-section grading policy... she's also super hot for a prof.
The notes are very clear and the tests are fair. I would definitely recommend her. If you pay attention in class and do the assignments, you will do well. She is very approachable and is always willing to help students outside of class. "And that's all she wrote."
Most confusing class ever. Jill made it all make sence. She is by far the best instructor at UVic in my opinion. She made Math 222 understandable, which is no small feat. As a plus, she's not bad to look at, makes an 8:30 am class worth going to. Mind you, she's got a massive diamond on her ring finger. (paying attention in class ;)
One of those classes that needs clarity and Jill was definitely clear! Her notes are awesome and she always made it make sense!
The notes were really good, I didn't have to read my textbook much. One of the clearest math profs I've had. I didn't find the midterms too difficult.
she is really nice
Tough but fair
She's an awesome teacher. So clear, nice, and really wants her students to do well. She's pretty young and most prof's her age don't care but she loves what she does and she understands the stuff. She's as thorough as it gets. Her tests are tricky though so make sure you study. Thanks for a good semester, Jill!
she's a tough teacher but compared to the other classes, you'll understand the material much better. however your marks wont reflect it, her exams are tough.
Excellent teacher. Very fair on tests and assignments. Classes can be dull if you know the material, but that's not her fault. Highly recommended.
Very clear, helpful, friendly. No downsides. Highly recommended.
I found the tests in this class to be harder than math 151, but the concepts simpler. The homework assignments are easy, and Jill tries to do lots of examples that aren't in the text, so its definitely a benefit to go to class. She's kinda funny too...
STRAIGHT UP BABE, YO. plus she is quite approachable and willing to help her students. I recommend her, although sometimes her review of the materials can be vague and lacking detail...although she is very willing to clarify. Very nice lady, too bad shes married.
Dr. Jill Simmons is quite approachable, and you may need to see her out of class... her notes are vague...but is there to help if you need it. exams are tricky but not difficult... do the practice exams in the workbook and you will do fine
Jill has the misfortune of having all her amazing skills being used to teach the basics to a bunch of business students who can't do math. Despite this, she does a great job, and explains things fully in depth (I can't see how she can stand it). If you can't understand the 151 material with her, then you aren't going to at all.
i had a really hard time in her class..she spent more time writing on the board with her back to the class than helping students grasp the concepts.
I enjoyed this course. Jill explained ideas thoroughly and clearly. Obviously a lot of examples and notes were given...it's math!
Jill is amazing. She has very clean lecture notes and is always willing to help a student. I would highly recommend her.
okay i really dont like her at all. even though i am doing well in her class i feel it is because of the textbook. her notes are good but too simplistic in relation to her tests. easy concepts in this class but she tests hard! study study. a lot of repetitive notetaking as like in any math class.
Awesome prof. Never missed a class.
Jill is an absolute sweetie. I'm sadly not mathimatically minded, but her classes aren't terrible. Her tests are hard but fair, and you can tell she really wants her students to do well.
Jill is an a wonderful professor. She keeps things simple and has a certain lightness to her class makes it a good place to be. She teaches well, uses good examples and is ALWAYS open to questions. And in her office hours she seems very happy and wanting to help. She's also a beauty.
This class had super easy material anyways, but she made it seem even easier. The tests were extremely fair and she was helpful in class and made sure that people understood before moving on.
Awesome prof. Absolute babe. easily the best math prof I have come across. Writes awesome exams. We need more like Jill
The material is difficult, so take this class with Jill if you want to survive. And yes, she is nice to look at.
Jill is a great prof. ATTEND CLASS!!! Exams were fair just do the work problems from the book and you'll be fine.
How she teaches is not always clear, but she is a good teacher anyways. Very laid back vibe to her and wants her students to do well. Take her class!!!
Jill is a great teacher. I just wish I had of done more work in her class... I failed the course, but at least the class was fun to attend
Great teacher. Hate math with a passion, and somehow pulled off a B with Jill. Cares about how her students do, and wants to make sure everything she teaches is clear. Would recommend her :)
Nice but overrated. Tests and assignments pretty easy. Notes are long and lectures tedious
I was nervous about taking stats, but she made it easy to learn. Notes were great. She was always helpful in office hours too.
Stats is a pretty hard course, but she did a good job of teaching it. She's really hot too.. I took it last semester
she is a great teacher, very clear and willing to help out with any questions! i definately recommend her!!
Her lecture style could be improved; presented so dully that it is difficult to comprehend what is going on. However, INCREDIBLE DURING OFFICE HOURS -- and that is not just because she is hot ... haha VERY HELPFUL and really wants you to succeed.
Cares about the students and lectures are clear. Testing/marking was very fair. She is helpful outside of class and has a sense of humour. And she is hot. What more could you ask for?
Absolutely amazing prof. Presented notes clearly and precisely and left no room for making a mistake. Textbook only needs to be consulted for practice; all info is in notes. Assignments and handbook questions were extremely helpful in practicing for exams. Do them, copy her notes thoroughly, and I can guarantee you'll get a great mark
She is just the best! So clear she makes stats super easy!
I can't say enough about Jill. She's the BEST teacher at UVic in my eyes. Her tests aren't easy, but her classes are by no means impossible. I recommend that all UVic business hopefuls take stats with her!
Really good at explaining questions and concepts and an overall good prof!
Very clear and easy to listen to. She is brilliant but never ever power-trips. Seems like a really kind-hearted and fair person. I've heard she's won awards.
Best Math teacher I've had at UVic. Had her for 122 as well. Takes midterm questions from notes and homework, so attend class and you'll do fine. Doing assigned problems helps if you want an A. Tests are fair and she is very clear and helpful.
IMHO highly overrated and I think her good looks may have influenced the ratings since about 70% of students are male. But in comparison to other profs in the Math department she is God and perhaps that explains why she won the Faculty of Science teaching excellence award last year. A good prof teaches, a great prof inspires. Jill is a good prof.
My favorite class of first year! Although the 60% final was a bit frightening, it was very similar in format and difficulty to the 2 mid terms. The 20% of the grade that is dedicated to 'web assignments' is a lovely gift! She is always available for help if you need it. She explained concepts wonderfully and her sense of humor made lectures fun!
I struggle with math but Dr. Simmons was such a good teacher that I finally passed a university math course! She is so caring and fair, best math prof or teacher I've have EVER! Highly recommend taking her courses!
Jill was a fantastic teacher! Very clear, thorough etc. Is willing to offer extra help, in needed. She's cute, however, lacks a little in the fashion department. Take ANY class with her if you get the chance!! She's really great. :)
Jill was an awesome proff. Considering she has her PhD in math, she is very good at explaining concepts so that anyone can understand. Her marking system is fair and the online part of the course was surprisingly helpful.
Jill was extremely helpful and her lectures were great. She is approachable and I was never afraid to ask questions in class. I hate math, and I failed this course (so close to passing!). But I made sure to go to class every day, Jill made math bearable. If I had a different teacher, I probably would have never gone to class.
by far the best math teacher i had ever. explains everything well and is very clear. practice questions from textbook and understand them and you should have an easy B or B+.
One of the best profs I've ever had!! So clear in her explanations, helpful in office hours, so kind in class, and has the best chalkboard writing ever. Assignments make you think and help you to remember the material. In-class assignments were also helpful. Exams were all fair. Textbook... not so useful. Overall, loved this class.
Jill is a great prof! Her notes are absolutely amazing. She explains concepts very well. In-class assignments were usually straightforward and easy, and take home assignments really helped to develop your understanding. She's very patient with any questions you have. I recommend Jill to anyone taking math!
Fantastic prof. Favourite class of the term. Her notes were clear and concise. She was easy to approach in office hours. By far the best prof I've had in my two years at UVIC
If you are a beginner in logic, this course will be tough. I'm a beginner. Take-home assignments are difficult so you must seek the help center. Midterm difficulty is medium. Final is WAY to hard. The question you see for homework questions will NOT appear on midterms(it won't be "Oh! The prof will just change the numbers in the question)
Stats is not my thing and Jill was great! She's very good at explaining complicated topics and is always available to answer questions effectively. She also helped publish the study guide so everything from lectures was directly linked to the textbook. She was the reason I did so well in the class. Definitely take this class with Jill if you can!
Great prof. However, there is a 30% failure rate in this class and not much is being done to combat that as far as I can tell. Exams are worth 80% of your mark and assignments and quizzes only count for 20%. Really frustrating for those of us who just need this as a pre-req for another class and have such a high chance of failure.
Jill is very clear and organized.
Jill Rocks!
She's great and really friendly. Most of her exams are fair, not to hard and not extremely easy but she is really clear about what shes doing and shes awesome ! I did well, But I did not do as good as I wanted. If I'd have to improve my grades in the future, I'd wish to have her all over again :)
Good professor. Never had a problem understanding a single thing she said in lecture, except for a few overly complicated mathematical definitions which you do not even need. Most of the concepts are covered in lecture. The solutions manual will teach you how to do the end of section word problems which tend to make it to assignments. Easy tests.
My favourite prof at UVic
Makes math actually enjoyable. Great prof, helpful, I would definitely recommend!
Amazing prof! So helpful, a little awkward but great instructor! You must go to class and do the homework but it is really beneficial when you do!
Had her for Math 120 and for Math 151. She is super nice but her courses are not necessarily easy. If you work hard though you will be rewarded. Her explaining is really good, even though for Math 151 it was confusing at times but that might be due to the course content. Overall, I can highly recommend her!!
Jill took what could have been a very challenging course and made it incredibly easily to understand. Her notes are awesome, her explanations are clear, and her tests are completely fair. Definitely enjoyed her class more than I thought I would. She's a babe, too.
Jill was a great teacher. She gave clear explanations and never threw any surprises at you on tests. She was always helpful. Just make sure to attend class and do your assignments and quizzes, and you will succeed in the course!!
Great prof! Super helpful and always stayed after class to answer further questions. Text book is definitely needed and attendance to the class is very important. Very interesting class! Must do the homework though
She was awesome
Really awesome prof! Her notes are super clear and really helpful and she is really good at explaining difficult concepts. She is always available for extra help and tries hard to make sure people will do well. Would definitely recommend shifting your schedule in order to get her as your prof!
Simmons is excellent. While the course material is not always easy for everyone, Jill is accessible and clear in her lectures. She takes time to help and accommodate all students in her class, and leads her students to success. Highly recommend taking her classes, and go out of your way to be in her class.
One of the best teachers at UVIC by far! I took Math 151 as well with Eric Foxall first semester and ended up dropping it but am not re-taking it with Jill and she is making everything so crystal clear. She cares about making sure everyone understands the material and uses plenty of examples.
She is smart and thorough, and keeps explanations simple.
Jill was super thorough with her notes, and went at a great pace. Was always willing to clarify and help
Very helpful and thorough with her notes! Great teacher, I learned a lot
Great at explaining the material. You have to submit an assignment and quiz online every week. It's annoying, but helpful as it keeps you on track with the class. If you are going to take MATH 151, I highly recommend Jill Simmons!!!
course was easy for me. Prof was very pleasant in class, and went through materials thoroughly.
Jill Simmons is an exceptional instructor. Her lectures are clear, concise, full of examples and if someone doesn't understand something she will find a way to explain it that works for that person. If you have a hard time with mathematics, I highly recommend her. I hope she will be teaching some of my other courses.
Jill is honestly way better than any High School Math teacher I've ever had. Her pace is slow but she is sure to make sure you understand all the material. Teacher 100+ students as if there's only 30. She's the best.
Jill is an amazing professor! Everything was clear, and if you needed help she was happy to give it. Tests definitely aren't simple, but if you study her notes and do the practice problems in the handbook, you shouldn't have any trouble.
She's the nicest prof, good at explaining and interesting to listen to.
Awesome and very helpful. Mymathlab stuff can be hard but as long as you do the practice tests you'll be fine
The clearest prof I think I'll ever have. I understood everything Jill stated in lectures.
Clear, and at times pretty funny! Very enjoyable lectures.
Meh. Good math teacher, but has applied the ethos of 'there is one right answer to my question' to the rest of her life as well. Likely wouldn't be a huge issue until you are one of her grad students, but will avoid taking another class with her.
Good teacher, but gives really simplistic examples in class, and hard questions on quizzes, making it hard to understand what you are doing or where you are going wrong!!
Very helpful and patient. She took the time to understand exactly what was being asked, even questions from that annoying girl who always slept in class and never raised her hand. I took this course at another college but wasn't credited for it. Wish I had her the first time. Even though I like math, the way she broke everything down was amazing.
My favourite prof! Jill is very clear, always just getting to the point and is willing to help when needed. Lectures can be very boring but it is important to attend to understand the material. Do not fall behind on mymathlab and be prepared to scream at ur computer screen during quizzes. Take this course with Jill!!!
Best math teacher on campus hand down. I have two classes with her and she nails teaching both in the most understandable and efficient way. Just Amazing.
Jill is the best math teacher I've ever had. I'm not usually a fan of math, but she made all of the concepts very clear and easy to follow.
Jill is great prof! She is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. She gives super clear and organized notes, and is always willing to help. She knows exactly why you are confused and can always explain things in a way that makes you understand . She is also quick at replying emails. Super sweet prof. Take the class with her if you can!
Jill is the best prof or teacher I've ever had. I've always struggled with math but somehow the way she teaches is so clear that I understood everything and did really well. She's a miracle worker.
Really hard marker on quizzes but otherwise okay
Jill is an excellent teacher who moves through concepts really thoroughly to ensure you understand. She is fair, friendly, and is really helpful during her office hours too. I highly recommend her as a teacher. I would absolutely take her class again!
Jill was my favorite prof this semester! She covers the material at a great pace and makes math class pretty enjoyable (weird I know). She's very kind and down to earth and will always be willing to help you after class. Would take this class again!
Jill is a super awesome prof. Always slows things down to make sure everything is understood for people who might not have taken math in a long time. Midterms and quizzes are pretty easy, but watch out for the final because the difficulty level is probably tripled for that one.
Jill is one of the best professors I have had at UVic so far. She is incredibly clear in her notes and lectures, and she goes through material slowly to make sure the class has time to grasp the concept. I would highly recommend her, especially to those who usually don't like math!
Jill gives very clear lectures and always answers questions clearly. She explains things in detail and gives good practice examples in class. Weekly assignments and quizzes are easy and exams aren't too bad as long as you do the homework. I personally didn't use the textbook because exams were like homework questions.
Jill is the best teacher you could possibly hope for in math. I always struggled with understanding math until taking her course. She explains things beautifully and patiently makes sure everyone understands. She's sweet and caring and gives very fair tests. wish she could teach every class
Jill Simmons is by far the best math teacher I have had in my life. She genuinely wants her class to do well, and she is extremely precise on what she is teaching and how to use such techniques to do well. I would recommend taking math with with her!
Her marking and exams very fair. If you can keep up with the material easy grade! Her lectures were very clear.
She's absolutely amazing. Always open for questions, and constantly makes sure her students know what's going on. Genuinely wants people to pass. Super fair grader, and has even moved quizzes or homework due dates if she thinks we should have more time to study. Definitely try to get in her section if you can -- definitely worth it!
I LOVE her! Math is not my thing but Jill literally made it my fav class for the first year! She makes things understandable and easy in class, and her tests are fair. Her class is most about taking notes but even looking at her would make me delighted... I am not lesbian but I have to say she is hot! Would love to take class w/ her again!
Jill is an exceptionally kind prof who truly cares how students do in her class! In lecture, she writes out completely all the notes which is a good thing but did end up taking kind of a long time and was at times frustrating. I also found that she explained things not very thoroughly (for me) and ended up needing a private tutor.
Gives clear notes that are easy to copy down and understand, although they make for rather tiring and boring lectures. Material is easy if you show up to class and study. Don't bother with the textbook, the handbook is far more useful for practice problems.
Jill is awesome! I'm a math person, but regardless she is clear and gets straight to the point. Attend lectures and TAKE ALL NOTES and mymathlab assignments and you're bound to get a decent grade!
My favourite professor for my first year! You need to attend her classes because the notes are essential and she goes quickly, but she explains things very thoroughly so your attendance will be well-rewarded. She is also extremely nice and will answer any questions you have so I recommend her for her teaching ability and general personality :)
I loved Jill for 151. For a first year course, she taught in a way that helped people understand. She took time to do examples in lecture, and she always used every minute of it. The tests were marked fairly and included all of the material she had covered. Would recommend her.
Jill is amazing she is your mom as a prof. GO to class her notes are very clear if you copy them word for word (easy to do) and lots of the homework and exam question are directly out of her examples. Test were fair and very easy if you paid attention and understand material, watch the little marks though, the homework can make or break your mark.
Jill's lectures were very organized which made it easy to learn the material. Math isn't my best subject but the simplicity of her lessons made it easy to grasp the main concepts. She genuinely cares about everyone, even though she may not be able to help all 250 students. Great prof, I highly recommend.
The first mid term is very tough, the second not so much. MyMathLab can really bring up your average, so don't neglect it. Lecture's are worth attending for the examples if you don't read the textbook, but purchase the practice question book, and do the two example exams for practice before the final.
Great prof - explains decently well. Use MyMathLab to learn through the study guide esp for the harder chapters. It'll help a lot. midterm 1 was harder than the second and the final was fair. Fair grading as well. would recommend Jill to anyone. Get the handbook.
She is very knowledgeable and structures her lectures professionally. Very good overall
Dr. Simmons is really judicious about what she covers during lecture and explains concepts very clearly. Her notes and examples provide a really strong foundation to do well in the course. Homework and quizzes are really well structured to keep you on track. I can't recommend Dr. Simmons enough, she's a treasure!
Jill's lectures were engaging, informative, and even humorous at times. Her personality added flavour to a class I wasn't particularly interested in but required. Her midterms were very fair. Midterms are much easier than the question in the course workbook, so do them and you will excel. She made a boring class fun. Go Jill!
Jill is wonderful! Math is my worst subject, but she made things easy to understand and lectures were interesting. She explains things in the best way, is really kind and helpful, and her midterms/exams are fair in terms of testing only what you've actually learned in class! I am taking Math again with her next term and she makes it bearable :)
One thing I wish Jill did more often is going over more tricky questions to help us feel more confident about the material. However, she is an intelligent, funny, and understanding prof who explains concepts very clearly. The online textbook was a pain to use. The course was not easy; I 100% recommend going to Math and Statistics Help.
Jill is clear, intelligent and an amazing prof. She could make the dullest material seem interesting and the hardest material easier. She explains things clearly with a step by step process and makes it easy for us to ask questions. Her handbook is more useful than the textbook, would 100% recommend getting instead.
Jill was excellent at explaining in full detail every question that you may come across in the homework or on tests. Her examples were extremely useful and straight forward. Any questions I had she was able to answer right away and explain them in a way that made complete sense.
Jill is a really good math prof. She gives clear lectures and her exams are straight forward. If you study and do your homework, there's no reason why you shouldn't get a good grade!
Jill is honestly awesome. She is really good at explaining key concepts, and is super nice. She is available pretty easily if you have questions. Overall, a great teacher!
I love her! She is so nice, explains things clearly, writes on the board clearly. I have never had such organized notes in any class. Also, first experience legitimately enjoying a math class. She really encourages the use of the forum on coursepaces and participates herself. Also she uses an online, open source (aka free!) textbook. She gets it :D
Jill was a great prof. Math is a very difficult course for many people, including me, but she does a great job explaining the work. Very positive person and always open to questions. I would hate to take math again, but if I had to, I would take it with her.
Very unclear on expectations until after it is is expected (textbook readings). Treats students as if we are dumb, because it is a upgrading class. 3 midterms and exam worth a lot. Weekly assignments that are never talked about and dont actually help in midterms.
Jill is a great professor. I loved her lectures and how she delivers mathematics. She focuses on key points and is very good at explaining concepts. Yeah, she's that good. 100% recommend her class. I will take her class again for MATH 151 anyway. Just go to all the lectures and do all homework. You can easily get an A if you put in the effort.
Jill Simmons is a great instructor. She helps sure you understand the course material and performs effective lectures consistently. Online quizzes are due every two weeks, and tests are of the right difficulty. Suggestion for this course would be to integrate the online questions into her lectures to learn from them, and add group tutorials.
This professor is unforgiving, and her lectures don't match up with the online quizzes at all. Beware for the most time consuming course on your timetable, you'll be teaching yourself the course through MML study plan. If you bomb a quiz, too bad! No extra credit or redos for you! I feel like she doesn't understand different learning capabilities
Jill is a great math prof, she has a very clear course outline and provides lots of great notes. Her exams aren't too bad and deal with a lot of questions similar to the notes. She is really friendly and is always willing to answer questions. If you are looking for a math class, I would highly recommend taking one of Jill's classes.
I really liked Jill. She was so caring and gave amazing lectures. It was very easy to follow her notes as she was speaking and she answered every question thoughtfully. The homework level was pretty average and the mid terms were average/easy in my opinion. I also did not buy the text book or workbook.
Best Math prof I've ever had. If you have the option, definitely take her class. Lectures are clear and easy to follow and tests reflect the examples gone over in class. 11/10 hoping to take one of her classes again.
Jill Simmons has done an awesome job of teaching online in my opinion. Helpful and concise lectures are posted every week with super easy 2 question quizzes for each video. Class time is used for specific examples students are struggling with and there is a checklist to keep you on track for the week. Thoroughly enjoy her class :-)
She is such a kind and understanding prof! Her office hours are also super helpful! The content she teaches can be boring at times but she knows that and tries to make it less so. Also she gives out note packets with lectures which are so helpful! Highly recommend her I'm so grateful I got her!
Jill did a phenomenal job teaching this course. Her explanations were clear and straight to the point. She handled the issues of covid in the best possible way, both in the course breakdown and in the format and presentation of material. I highly recommend her if you are taking math 151!
God's gift to math professors, I would legitamatly marry this woman if I could (in a platonic sense of course.) Jokes aside, she is amazing. Her lectures are perfect and clear, the homework is chill, the tests are MUCH easier than the assignments, meaning that if you do the homework you go into the tests overprepared. Fave prof. GOAT.
Professor Simmons, cares about her students. She does a fair job at presenting information in an easy to follow way. I do not fault her at all for the difficulties of learning this. However, the textbook is useless. Do every study plan question and handbook question. Its a tough class don't be fouled. If you didn't take foundations 12 be warned!
I really enjoyed my time in Math 151, I didn't do very well on the first midterm, it was really hard. Having failed the first midterm I recommend not dropping the class and sticking with it as the material gets much easier. I did well enough I didn't have to write the final. Jill was always available for 5-10 minutes after class to help.
Jill did an excellent job teaching the content. Sometimes she would go too fast or not explain something thoroughly enough, but if you ask, she will slow down and explain it in more detail. Lots of textbook homework, but that's expected for a math class. i wish she were teaching my future math courses!
Dr. Simmons was a fantastic professor for this class. Tests were fair, with no surprise or trick questions. The option to skip the final was appreciated. Completing the MyLab study plan for each chapter should make this class a breeze. Not doing any "optional" homework will make this class a struggle. If you need to take MATH151, take it with Jill.
She's the simply the best.
Jill is so sweet, she cares about her students and I find her to be a great teacher. She wont mark attendance, you can watch her recorded lessons and be fine if you need to miss. This class is hard though, don't be fooled. Do the study guide and take the homework questions seriously because they help. The first midterm is hard, but stick thru it.
A lot of this course was done on my own time through practice. If math isn't your best subject I highly recommend getting a tutor. Jill's lectures made sense, she was well spoken, and she was excellent at answering questions. Tests were difficult, USE THE MATH 151 HANDBOOK TO STUDY! Mylab sucked, but the handbook was awesome.
Jill is very organized and clear about what to expect in this course. Her lectures are at a good pace and she is great at explaining the material. The final exam was optional. You only had to take it if you wanted to improve your mark.
Jill is a very understanding prof who knows what she is talking about. This class is quite tough and I would recommend reading the textbook and doing all the practice questions before any test. I'd also recommend learning the unit before she goes over it by reading the textbook first. Nice prof, tough class.
Jill is an engaging and organized professor who explains everything clearly. Don't worry about your mark on the first test, many people who failed the first test still ended up with high marks (me included). Just do your MyLab assignments and quizzes. I highly recommend seeking math assistance if you are struggling in the first few chapters.
She is an incredible math professor, she is clear, explains things really well, and wants her students to succeed. Math 151 is an extremely challenging course but Jill gives endless support to her students. I highly recommend taking math 151with Jill
If you have to take this class for BCOM, good luck. The only nice thing is that the final is optional if you do good enough in the class. The first midterm is the hardest, but it always feels like you never fully understand what she's talking about. She makes it look easy and then asks you a question you've never seen before.
I see some reviews on here complaining about the difficulty of the class. This could not be further from my experience: the course content is admittedly somewhat difficult, but Jill makes it quite straightforward. The handbook is an AMAZING study tool so use that. Mymathlab is hot garbage, but that's not exactly Jill's fault.
Loved Jill! I found the first midterm incredibly difficult but had a huge improvement on the next two. Biggest advice: use the handbook! I didn't do this for the 1st midterm and my grade suffered. Prioritize it over MyLab study plan. Start studying early! Optional final is great! MyLab assignments are good grade booster and helpful study resource.
Great prof, really enjoyed her teaching this class. Course grading is very clear and fair. She also responded to my email quickly, to further explain an exam question. No complaints whatsoever!
Jill was great! Her explanations and examples in class were very clear and understandable and really helped with learning the course material. No complaints!
Jill is an amazing math professor. Her lectures were helpful for the exam material. She teaches so that her students will understand and be ready for the mid-terms. Highly recommend anyone to take math class with her.
Prof. Simmons is engaging and accessible outside of class. Her lectures are well-explained and interesting and there is only 1 assignment & quiz per week for this class (both of which are manageable). I bombed the first midterm, but got As on both of the next 2 and didn't have to take the final, which was nice too. My best advice: USE THE HANDBOOK!
Prof Simmons is amazing! Her lectures are clear, straight-forward and detailed. Stick to exercises in the handbook and you will do great in exams. Exams are straight-forward too, no tricky or confusing questions.
Jill Simmons' lectures were so clear and straightforward, it's honestly refreshing to see considering other professors'. Her teaching style is very concise so if there were any confusion, it probably wouldn't last long.
Jill Simmons is an incredible teacher! She is very skilled at teaching math. Definitely take a class with her if you have the chance!
She is the sweetest prof, I hate math and statistics but her class has made me a lot more comfortable and confident in these subjects. She is a supportive teacher and tells you exactly what is on her tests. Do the homework they're so helpful!
Jill was a great professor. I found Math 151 to be a brutally easy class, some do not, but I found it easier than pre-calc 12 and I found myself rarely studying. Went to Jill's office hours once to talk about a question on a midterm and she was super caring and helpful and made sure I fully understanded where I made a mistake. Lectures were great!
Prof is organized, nice, and quick to respond to emails. Lectures are clear and concise - lots of writing though. Assignments are even easier if you attend tutorials. Tests aren't difficult if you prep well and the questions usually follow the examples from class - no trick questions or odd wording. Great prof and great class. Would take it again.
Jill is perfect. Her lectures are always clear + she's super sweet and always available for questions. The math itself is very easy, but found the probability applications tricky at first. I'm more familiar with calculus, so took some getting used to. Just do a little practice after class (I slacked and didn't) and USE THE HANDBOOK TO STUDY
This was my second class with Jill and she was just as good the second time around. Super clear lectures, positive attitude, fair tests and happy to answer questions. I also found this class a lot easier than math 151 and all I did was cram before the midterms and exams and still did fine. The textbook is wordy, I skipped a lot of it.
Courses she teaches can be quite hard but she explains everything the best she can. Great Professor!
I hate math and I'm not doing well in her class but that's on me. She is an amazing teacher, incredibly kind, and she's very clear on what she wants you to know. She does not try to trick her students on exams and she gives you a lot of resources to practice. She has also structured her course in such a way where most students would pass.
Great prof, explains everything in a way that everyone can understand, also gives great feedback.
Jill works hard and ill give her that. The lectures are very clear and the material is easy to keep up with if you practice. However, midterms are only 6 questions and she LOOOOVES to trick people with a couple of questions. She is a nice person but I never want to take a class with her again and this is coming from someone who has had her twice.
Jill is amazing. I would rearrange my entire schedule just to be in her class. Her notes are so easy to understand and she is extremely helpful and approachable when I had any questions. You can tell she wants her students to succeed which in turn made me never want to miss a lecture and gave me an interest in stats when I had none before.
Jill is the GOAT. Explains concepts so clearly, no trick questions, gives tons of resources to be ready for tests. Super straightforward, what-you-see-is-what-you-get prof. Loved her and would take another class with her all day
Really like Jill! She was always present for office hours and made sure to answer any and all questions. She is very approachable and genuinely cares for her students. I really loved the material we learnt because she explains it super well. First test is hard beware!
She is the Michael Jordan of teaching math, one of if not the greatest of all time. If you have the option of picking her as your professor do it.
By far the best proffesor I have had at UVIC. If you can take a class with her, do it! Her lectures are very organized and she is great at explaining new concepts.
Wish Jill was my mom
Even tho i failed her class, she was a great prof & actually wants her students to succeed. I am not a mathy person but I can tell if I had simply done the MyLab practice ?'s like she recommended, I could have done well. In my class grades solely were based on 10 online quizzes and 3 non cumulative in person midterms!
Professor Simmons is a great teacher - her lectures are clear and she genuinely cares about student success. The math content can be tricky, but using the textbook, doing practice questions, and tools like Unstuck ai really help. Definitely take this class if you can!
