New instructor as of 2003
Fun class, mostly all girls in the class. Teacher can get moody sometimes, but she is very helpful and will answer any questions, take home final was 3 short essays, you have to keep a journal going for the readings, and participate in class discussions.
take her she is awesome
A really good teacher. I learned a lot in her class and I actually enjoyed being there.
There are no tests in this class. all you do is keep a journal of your thoughts and turn it in twice in the semester. She is super nice and a VERY easy grader. The final is a 3 page paper... SO EASY! Take her you will get an easy A.
do the reading and go to class and your set... her tests are exactly the review sheet!
Quick to judge and very narrow minded.
Very firendly and enthusiastic. Her quizzes can be a little tricky, but pay attention in lecture and keep up with the readings and it's a great class!
Jill is awesome and really knows her stuff. She is very approachable and always willing to work w/her students to help them to succeed. Be sure to take notes in lecture and have an open mind, and you will have a good experience in her class.
Very knowledgeable. keep up with readings, she likes people to participate in class. study guide is very useful for exams.
BORING! She talks most of the time and makes you do dumb group work, tests were not too hard. You HAVE to participate in this class.
Super smart and funny! A FUN FUN FUN class! This woman knows her stuff and is HIP to the max! You will learn a TON, if you remain openminded and listen... thats what you paid for, isn't it? KNOWLEDGE! She'll give it to you.
I disagree with the comments here. She's not a good teacher - unclear, unaproachable, kind of weird. Seems to have favorits. I did well in class but suffered through it.
I enjoyed her class. Although, we had a lot of controversial debates and you could tell what she believed instead of just presenting the research. But, I learned a lot and it was worth going to class. I would definately take her again.
She seems to be very mean to people that are not of a minority. You will see in your grade.
She is the best. She's always available if you need extra help. Assignments are easy. Homework load is easy. Do the readings she gives you! It helps with assignments, tests, and essays. She is very great and open minded and tries to give everyone a chance. I loved all her classes. I even took her for Soc 416. She taught me a lot a out SOC!

She is a totally cool professor. This class is easy if you just keep up with all the reading and go to class. She is very open minded and is very willing to help anyone of needed. She can be funny sometimes, and her class was rarely boring.
Dr. Weight is a flexible, open minded, passionate professor. Work load is steady all semester long and as long as you participate and make an effort, this class is a managable A. Web CT was a great a practical & effective way to communicate with her & fellow classmates. The 10 RR's were a bit much but the "hands on" projects were memorable.
This was my first online class, and it was great. It was based mainly on WebCT, but everything worked out fine. I met with her in her office hours a few times to discuss papers, and she was always willing to help.
A lot of writing in class. She is always available for office hours.
Dr. Weigt's class was informative and interesting. Her lectures were detailed and written clearly-I learned alot from them. She answered questions quickly through e-mails and always seemed willing to help students. Overall, very good especially for an online class.
I really loved this class! She was very organized but not anal and kept all lectures and discussions free but equally on point. Overall the course content was extremely interesting and easily applies to people from all walks of life. Attendance was not mandatory but encouraged and to be honest I usually wanted to go. I highly recommend this cours
in 361 there is a lot of peer-eval stuff. i would have rather had the prof look at it, but i don't think she wanted to take the time. she'll love you if you read and talk in class; she gets annoyed if you don't participate. just read and keep up with work and talk in class...you'll do well.
This prof is phenomenal! I really liked her style. There is a lot of reading and a fair amount of writing... but it is a upperdivision class. If you have something good to add, say it, she'll apprieciate it. Do NOT have side conversations in class... she will ask you what you're talking about.
Excellent example of a class where mindless dolts blindly accept contradictory statistics from the feminist matriarch which purportedly make a valid argument about social conditions . Bring some bread and cheese to this class, the whine is provided - in abundance.
Just finished this class as a 5 week summer class. It wasn't bad at all. Lots of reading but it is summer school. Definitely doable. Prof. is EXTREMELY helpful and responsive. I'd definitely take her again in another class. Subject is as interesting as you allow it to be. Be open minded. But the Prof. is great!
Summer school class was fast-paced (of course), and interesting. She is very clear on assignments, due dates, etc. She covers a lot of material, but, if you do all of the reading, the tests are not hard. She is fair and approachable.
I took this online so attendance isn't really required. Just turn stuff in on time and you should get an "A". It's easy.
Having the book is a must, there is a quiz every other week on the book material and class material. The class is pretty interesting. I would not mind taking another.
Very aproachable and helpful, but doesn't apreciate debates about her views, very intersting and informative,Do the work and take notes don't expect an easy grade. She knows her stuff and will challenge you.
She is really nice and upbeat. she is very passionate about people in poverty! the material was sometimes boring. 3 papers, no final. papers were kind of confusing. A LOT of reading and discussion tasks each week, but it is a 4 unit class after all. If your willing to work hard then the class is worth it.
Do Not take this class with this instructor!!! She tests you on textbook chapters that she never even discusses with the class. Her grading is ridiculous and her quizzes are like finals every 3.5 weeks! Useless and harsh amount of reading that never gets discussed, but you're tested on it. Most of her students fail, but she wont change her methods!
Don't listen to the bad comments! She is such a great teacher, but it's a tough course. Her lectures are very interesting and she tries to make it fun. Her quizzes are pretty hard, but if you do ALL the reading you'll do well. She can be a tough grader as well, but I learned a lot in her class.
I can't believe people like her. Seriously her class is SUPER hard. More reading than my core classes. Everything she says is contradicting. Quizzes every 2 weeks and most everyone fails but she could care less. Hard grader too! I've talked to many other people who agree with me so I do NOT recommend her as a prof!!
she is an awesome professor.. do not listen to the bad comments... she is so passionate about what she does and it really really makes you think critically and opens your eyes to the bigger perspective and the inequalities and injustices of society.. take her class! one of the best ones i have taken.. readings are interesting!
Yeah, the course is time consuming, lots of reading and discussion questions due each class, but it is a 4 unit class. She is VERY passionate about the subject and wants her students to walk away knowing more about poverty. She is understanding, and reasonable. Take the class, you will not regret it! Attendance is mandatory, and try to participate.
It seems like she can't find enough information to lecture about because half the class time is spent asking students their immediate opinions/reactions to every point she makes. You are required to read an excessive amount (about 300 pgs.) of sociological empirical articles that are difficult to understand. She comes off as unprofessional.
Extremely helpful and approachable. Readings aren't too bad and as long as you skim them, you shouldnt do too bad on the tests. The more you participate, the more she likes you, the better your grade will be. Really enjoyed her class!
I think overall Professor Weigt was a good teacher. The readings were very long and if you didn't read them you won't be able to participate in class discussions. Read every article, trust me on this one. The readings for the most part were interesting. It's either or I guess, read the other reviews!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE!!! She is so unorganized. You never know when assignmenst are due and you have to check the website at least three times a day just to make sure you have all the deadlines. She doesn't respond to emails so you are better off just taking this class in person and with a different professor.
Dr. Weigt is AMAZING! She is really passionate about teaching and does everything in her power to get you to think critically in a sociological way. She cares deeply about her students and you feel like she is invested in your progress. She is available for help and guidance. She isn't easy, but the best professors never are :o)
This class was ok, but I don't like that she does not post your overall grade and your in the dark about it for a while...I did not enjoy this class, but other may have. She is ok, workload is doable.
Honestly, just don't take this class with her. Take it with Alicia Gonzales.
Lectures are supposed to be linked to the test. They're not. Long readings are supposed to be linked to the test, loosely. She''s fun I suppose but becomes boring after constant useless discussion. A really tough grader, even if you have the right answer.
Im typically an AA- student and I ended up getting a C+ in this class. I work extremely hard and usually am on top of my assignments. When I took this course during winter intersession, I was completely overwhelmed by the assignments and readings. If you take this class with her be prepared to have no social life and to teach yourself everything.
She is a tough grader, but she is a very nice professor. three papers and 23 sets of reading questions.
I really enjoyed taking this class with her.I learned so much and I feel that the class discussions impacted many students. If you are lazy this class is not for you. If you want to learn and expand your mind then she is the professor for you.
Worst summer school class I have ever taken. Unreasonable with grading. Do not take this professor!
please avoid her. very unreasonable with grading and makes you feel stupid for asking for her help during office hours. Hate her class and her way of teaching
Worst Soc. professor at Cal State avoid her!! She says one thing and does another with grading. I am a senior and she was the worst professor at Cal State I have taken. Her test aren't easy, each test does have essay questions along with multiple choice and not enough time to complete even if you read the chapters right before taking the test!
Quit your job, quit you relationships, quit with life because your entire existence will be focusing on this one class. Ill admit that her class is quite interesting but man some of her readings are very tough. The one good thing is that there will be no textbook required.
Lots of reading, lectures are fast , very intimidating, Be prepared to read and try to put it together with the test, the study guide does not compare to the test so study hard. On a positive note she will help you if you ask.
Literally, the best professor! She is so awesome, she is very understanding, she's a silly lady! In my four years of attending CSUSM I had never gone to a professors OH and I did with her. She is so chill to hangout with and helps you with whatever you may need. I miss you Professor Weigt!!
You will read 40+ pages a night. All you do is read/answer questions but readings are hard, boring, and long. you do not have time to finish everything on time but she forces you to have it all done. not a good professor. would not recommend. I asked for an extension she said no. Horrible.
I would say this class was the hardest class of my college career. The workload is a lot. Every time I would ask for help I'd feel dumb for asking. Take another professor because this class is HARD!
Definitely the hardest course I have taken at CSUSM. Professor Weigt is extremely unorganized and unclear with what she wants in both her papers and projects. We had 3 group projects that consisted of 13 people. It was a mess for every single group. Don't even bother to ask questions either, because she will make you feel dumb and won't even help.
One of the hardest classes I've taken at CSUSM. Professor Weigt assigns way to much work and she is a tough grader. I still don't know what grade I recieved in the class because she does not upload grades right away and unorganized with keeping students up to date.
The class itself is mostly in class discussions which do not prepare you all the material you read (way too much hw). It gets confusing at times because she allows people to go on tangents and she says she'll upload the powerpoints, but doesn't. She speads through her lectures, does not clarify the assignments well, and she's also a tough grader.
This professor is a harsh grader, she's very specific and the free responses on her tests are the ones that dropped my grade the most. I wouldn't recommend this class to others. I'm a hard working student that's been on the Dean's List and I work to get my A's, but I'm fearing that I will be failing this class.
I do NOT recommend taking her. Completing and trying your hardest on every assignment is still not good enough. VERY tough grader. Lots of homework. If you care about your grades- take another professor.
Dr. Weigt is a professor that is passionate about her subject and wants her students to be responsive and engaged learners. She waits until students were able to give her an answer to a question she'd ask in lecture, but she does not ridicule you if you do not understand. She's open for office hours and is very kind! Don't be intimidated!!
As a student I shouldnt feel ashamed or judged for voicing my opinion. Professor Weigt time and time again forced her political, social, and economical views on me, while making my views seem insignificant. If you want a true, bipartisan, college experience, dont take her class.
The content was informative but Professor was very biased in her political opinions. She was unclear on her grading criteria and was an extremely harsh grader on papers and tests. I don't mind reading or working hard but this class was overwhelming to say the least. She does offer extra credit, is avail for OH and is very responsive to emails.
Do not take this class with her. She was a very tough grader even though her requirements for the assignments are very vague. As a doctor and a professional I would assume she would be profesional enough to leave her political bias out of lecture but she makes clear of what if is and she challenges students almost making it personal. Dont take her
Thank god for credit/ no credit. Prof. Weigt has very high expectations for assignments and is a very tough grader. She is very unclear about the things she expects from assignments. Overall the coursework is interesting but not worth the negative impact it will have on your grade.
Professor Weigt is the worst professor I've ever had. Very unclear on what is needed on assignments & gets angry & talks down to you when you don't understand. Bc of her I feel like my education was degraded and cheapened and the course was a colossal waste of time for my peers & I. I felt like my progress as a student was hindered because of her
I cant fathom how petty & disrespectful she is. She is delusional & tells you HER perspective in politics/society which is bias. She also abuses her power for her own personal gain bc all I learned is Cougar Pantry. I learned nothing in her class & she will send you to the dean if you get help from other students even when she "allows it".AVOID HER
350 characters is not enough to explain how crappy this course was. Material was scattered, and I felt like I never had enough time to process the previous material. bias and doesn't leave room for debate. her grading makes no sense- tough grader. Her "short answers" on exams have to be 1-2 pages and there are a lot of short answer. dont take.
This woman is the worst teacher I have ever had in my 14 years of school. I am reconsidering going back to school next semester because of this class. You would think that because of COVID and everything being online, she would be more lenient, but her expectations are just way too much. Save your time, money, energy, and mental health!
Terrible teacher. Unclear on assignments and just really rude if you dont understand what she is talking about. She tries to act like she cares about students but you would think in the middle of a pandemic someone would have more of a heart for students struggling with learning. I learned nothing from her other than not to take her classes again.
DO NO TAKE PROF WEIGT. Absolutely terrible professor. She gave a 75 minute final with multiple essay questions expecting multiple pages for each. This class will take up a majority of your coursework and she is pretty rude. Super vague on expectations.
Prof Weight was so terrible I am actually considering changing my major since she is the director of Social Sciences at CSUSM. Just a rude and unkind person all around even though she pretends to care. Tests are ridiculously difficult and she the class as a whole is extremely unorganized. Please consider taking a different professor
Claims that she made the ridiculously short timed final because she wanted to stop further cheating but its not a punishment. Like GTFO thats definitely a punishment. Its unfortunate that social science students are forced to take her class and cannot take it with another professor.
Never had such a terrible professor. Class is so unorganized and the work is extremely difficult to understand. When you dont understand she talks to you like youre stupid. Tests are ridiculously difficult and not enough time given. I wish there was another option for a SSCI301 professor bc she was terrible. Avoid her at all cost if possible.
AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. Can't stress enough how bad of a professor she is. Unorganized, unreachable, and not approachable. Her instructions are very confusing. Study guide was no help. Just avoid. avoid. avoid. Let your friends know to avoid. avoid. avoid. What a shame of a class
This professor was fine. The only thing I hated was how unclear her assignments were. She would give prompts for papers that were very vague and hardly any structure. If I didnt have friends in that class I wouldnt have passed.
Extremely unclear what is expected on assignments and paper topics are way too broad. Lectures are repetitive and if you ask her a question for clarity she responds in a condescending manner for no reason. There is no transparency with her grading so you wont know where you stand in the class until the end of the semester. Tried my best, still a B
It's impossible to fit everything that is wrong with this class and this professor into the allotted space. I have personally written a 10 pg paper for the Dean regarding Jills misconduct in class and unprofessional teaching habits. She is the most unreachable, condescending, disorganized, petty, rude, and apathetic teacher I have ever had. *AVOID*
I loved Dr. Weigt
So disorganized. Waits until finals week to submit grades from the beginning of the semester (including the midterm). Unreachable and uncompromising when it comes to asking for help. Her classes move at a fast pace and if you have any questions she is condescending IF she answers them. CSU Stanislaus offers a much better alternative online course.
Professor Weigt is an exceptional teacher. The homework can be difficult, but it does serve you as a student in your learning. Dr. Weigt is open to feedback and pushes students to challenge their worldviews to become strong critical thinkers. Highly recommend taking her course!
Dr. Weigt is one of the best and most insightful professor I have had at San Marcos. Dr. Weigt is understanding, intelligent, compassionate, and holds in depth and meaningful discussions. This course set the foundation to my major change. As long as you keep up with the readings, you will be fine. The readings are interesting and relevant.
By far the most rude, disrespectful, disorganized professor. I am in the process of reporting her to the dean for all the problems she caused me this semester. She will make you feel dumb if you have questions or need clarification for anything. You will also do a bunch of work she will not put towards your grade. Do not take her.
I took SSCI380, Social Science Policy class and this was my 2nd class with Dr. Weigt. Honestly, I was so shocked when I read through some of these reviews. In my experience, she was always prepared and helped connect the material to real life. I have learned so much from her in the past two semesters. She is a true asset to CSUSM
You will get comfortable with reading academic materials. I appreciated that indigenous peoples were included in the materials as many are absent from most disciplines. You will have many eye opening moments in the material covered and will take it with you in life. Learn to not be scared just because of some bad reviews, go in with an open mind
Dr. Weigt was one of my first professors at CSUSM and she really helped to set my expectations for college level work and open up my worldview. If you show up to class, do the readings, and participate you will pass this class. Our conversations in that class were so fun and enlightening. She is very understanding, don't be afraid to ask questions!
If you enjoy being a student and love learning+engaging in class, you will love this course--If you just need this class to graduate and want an easy A this is the wrong class for you. Dr. Weigt was so inspiring and although there was heavy reading at times, she is such a pro at teaching research methods in a clear way that everyone can understand.
class discussion was nice but after that it was h e double hockey sticks. most people i knew suffered with me shes a very strict grader and is very broad when u ask why u got something wrong. she seems like means well but thats it shes pretty strict and expects u to give up a weekend day for a zoom thing and doesn't care if u got bills to pay.
