She's AWESOME. She really cares about her students. The class is really easy and all the assignments were interesting and inspiring. Don't forget to do your readings and take notes during the class. One of the most easy-to-approach professors in USC.
Professor Pierson is helpful, straightforward, practical, and most importantly, approachable!!! Her COMM375 course is completely useful and will literally advance your life. Strongly recommend.
This class is interesting and not too difficult. As long as you use her reading guides and fill them out as you go, studying for tests are easy. There are 3 midterms (not cumulative) and an optional final. The final grade if taken replaces your lowest midterm grade. Loved this class and would highly reccomend
She is really an unorganized professor. Her lecture and the textbook are contradicting to one another even though she claimed it is somehow connected. So, it can be really confusing when it comes to the exams. Yet, she can be a sarcastic professor and is always opinionated about everything.
Her lecture can be boring due to abundant discussions unrelated to the textbook. She required three exams and one optional final. She also required two papers and participations. The exams were definitely not straightforward and she admitted that she can reword the questions. In addition, the paper grading is very harsh.
The class was supposed to be very interesting due to its content; however, the delivery of the contents is hindered because of inconsistency between the lecture and the textbook. In addition, the exams were difficult to comprehend due to complex wordings. Therefore, the organization of the materials should be improved.
Her exams are difficult because the questions is hard to understand. If she uses clear and direct sentences, it will be much helpful to students. Anyway, there are three midterms in the class with an optional final exam. She only picks three highest scores.
Prof Pierson teaches some really valuable and important career-related lessons in this class. I really took away a lot. Although the class got a bit boring at times, the assignments due were all really helpful. Pierson cares about her students, and i would really recommend this class for people interested in actually learning. GREAT TEACHER :)
The contents of the lecture and textbook are fairly easy to comprehend but the way she words the exam questions is confusing.
Face palm. Killed a really interesting subject.
One of the best professor's I've ever had. She really cares about her students, and tries to help you succeed not only in class but in life. The class I took was really rewarding and useful. It's pretty laid back, you just need to be diligent, and even then the work required is nothing compared to many other classes.
Professor gives as study guides for all of the exams; however, the study guides are useless. Basically, to pass the class, you have to read the textbook. Her study guides don't really narrow the contents. So, don't rely on her study guide 100%. She also requires us to write two papers. The topics are not difficult, but she is a harsh grader.
You have to do the reading, but the content is very easy to read and understand. Most of the stuff is common sense, so it's not hard. Her tests are sometime written oddly, but she's a fair grader. Very easy exams, entirely multiple choice.
Aside from her hilarious classes I've had with her, Professor Pierson is a great teacher and her lectures are extremely helpful with preparing you for whatever profession you are going into. She is by far one of my favorite professor's at USC thus far. She is realistic, blunt, and hilarious
Pierson is EASILY the best professor I have ever had at USC. She's absolutely hilarious and makes some dry theories a blast to learn. She's so caring and like a mom to everyone. Her tests are a piece of cake if you go to lecture and look at main textbook terms. Essay topics are usually cool too! Take a Pierson class. You seriously won't regret it.
Professor Pierson made class interesting, fun and very engaging. A lot of classes where it is one big conversation and a lot of social experiments to truly understand Intercultural Communications. She is funny and knows what she is talking about!
Professor Pierson is incredible! She is very engaging and provides meaningful insight on how to relate to other cultures. If you are at all interested in learning about other cultures this class will serve you well! Not hard to get a B. Many of my friends in the class walked away with an A! Showing up is necessary... it is a college course!
Professor Pierson is the best professor I have had thus far at USC. For a GE course, it is the most interesting, fun, applicable class ever! Super fun topics, engaging lectures, and reasonable assignments. While you do have to write 3 short papers, they are pretty quick to get done and interesting to complete.
I took her for a GE and absolutely loved her! attendance is not mandatory, but she does keep track, so if at the end of the semester you aren't doing well, etc., she will know if it is because of the material or because you skipped a lot. She is very funny, she was very easy going when I asked to rewrite a paper. Great professor!
Dr. Pierson is a sweetheart who makes her lectures very engaging! The only issue is that her powerpoints are all over the place; there would be a couple of times where her lectures were a bit hard to follow. Exams were not that difficult, as long as you study. A good chunk of your grade depends on your TA because there are 3 writing assignments.
I LOVED Jillian! One of my favorite professors at USC. So funny and very sweet. COMM 200 with her wasn't bad at all. Go to class, take good notes, read the book and you will be fine for the exams. 3 paper assignments --your TA grades but they weren't terrible to write. I loved her so much I am taking two classes with her next semester!
Jillian is amazing. Very funny and sweet person. However, this class was not easy A. You had to study extremely hard to earn it. I think she made the class harder than it had to be for a 200 level class in my opinion. I love her though so she made it worth it. YOU HAVE TO STUDY AND READ BOOK in order to do well. Great professor.
Easy A. Just do the work and you are fine. She is really funny in lecture
COMM 304 is not a bad class at all! Jillian is probably one of the nicest and funniest teachers at USC! Such a great person who makes the class fun
Professor Pierson is amazing! I learned so much from her in this class. I think she does a great job teaching in it. Do the work and readings and you will be fine.
Professor Pierson is very funny on the lecture. However, you really need to read ALL ASSIGNED CHAPTERS thoroughly as the tests are directly linked to the textbook. The homeworks are manageable: 2 short essays and 1 long paper. A relatively EASY A, just take it.
Professor Pierson was an awesome teacher to have my freshman year at USC. Comm 324 is an awesome GE choice. As an art major, I had never taken a communications class but it wasn't too hard and it was so much fun! Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Pierson is one of my favorite teachers at Annenberg. Shes so passionate about what she teaches and is always open to having a dialogue with students. While her tests can be lengthy and a little tricky, after the first one you know what to expect. Definitely need to do the textbook reading to succeed on them.
I love Jillian! This is my favorite class of Professor Pierson by far! So interesting and so relevant for college students. Midterm and Final are super easy (short-answer). 2 papers (interesting topics), and a presentation. The only downside is that she is hard grader for papers so you have to do your best every time. 10/10 recommend.
Jillian is an incredible professor. Comm about Sex is one of the best classes I've taken in my life. All you do is discuss the topics, do the readings, and write a few papers. This is one of her easier classes and doesn't require a lot of effort at all. Great class and she is so sweet/kind. Can be a tough grader on assignments but she is amazing
Jillian is one of my favorite professors at USC! Love her! However, out of all of her classes, this was my least favorite. It is a interesting class but there is a lot work. 2 papers (kinda hard topics), 2 midterms (super easy, just study the book and notes) and the final (have to read a book and write a paper). The TAs graded kinda hard
I LOVE JILLIAN PIERSON. One of my favorite professors at USC. Super funny and caring--always looked forward to class. However, this isn't an easy class. You have to work your butt off for the A. The TA's are tough graders on papers and the test/final you have to READ the textbook and readings. One of her harder classes
Dreaded coming to class. Lectures always dragged out & completely useless. Took attendance though. Midterms were just from textbook/readings. MUST READ TO PASS. TA's are HORRIBLE. Most picky graders I've ever witnessed. Both my papers dropped a grade because of points taken off for citations! Received my first ever B+. I was a 4.0 student.. BEWARE!
I am not a fan of lectures in general, but I always looked forward to coming to her class. She kept me actively engaged through her humor, applicable examples, and engagement with students. For COMM324, there are two midterms (based on class notes AND the readings), two papers, and a final.
Love Professor Pierson! She's hilarious and makes learning communication theory interesting. The class was planned well and she covered concepts in depth, making them easy to comprehend. Tests were all multiple choice, and there were two papers. She is responsive and will always help if you need it!
Fun professor. Not a lot of work outside of class and tests are not too difficult either. Tests cover both textbook and lectures so you do need to show up in class to get good grade. I personally don't like the topic of the course and her teaching style but it's not her fault. She's super passionate and genuinely cares about her students.
I love Professor Pierson. Her lectures are hilarious and chill. There's 3 short papers, 2 midterms, and 1 final for the class. Exams are all based on examples she gives in lecture so take really good notes. TAs grade easy, it's a chill class. There is a surprising amount of content to learn, but she's flexible and accessible outside of class.
She's the best! Funny and smart. The course is so interesting and the tests are very straight forward. If you pay attention in lecture the class will be easy. She makes the material easy to understand. The lectures can move slowly and be boring. TAs grade your papers, which are the hardest part of the class.
A kind professor who truly cares about students. Does not use powerpoints very often in lectures, but shares examples to keep us engaged on the topic. COMM 480 is a smaller class so it does require class participation, but she makes it a comfortable space to share. You do need to do the reading and take notes to be able to succeed on the tests.
Communicating About Sex was the best class I have taken at USC. Jillian led the lectures really well in a way that allowed the students to navigate the conversation. Only had a midterm, a project, and two papers which were interesting and we were allowed to choose our own topics for the paper/ project. I was looking forward to every class. Take it!
She is so kind and helpful. If you come to class you will do well.
Jillian is amazing during lecture! She is so knowledgable and is passionate about Communications. This semester quizzes and exams were taken open note, so make sure to take good notes during lecture. She makes assignments really straightforward and her TAs are helpful as well.
Professor Pierson is funny, making her lectures enjoyable. The content was some of the best I've learned at USC. Graded mainly on the exams (open-note because of the online format, and all multiple choice), a paper, and a presentation. However, her TA's grade really harshly. You also have to make sure you read, since you'll be tested on readings.
Jillian is super nice and her class was extremely informative. Great transition to online format and really communicates with her students so kindly. She was eager to help us do the best we could throughout the semester and her TAs were really great and kind, as well. Exams aren't too difficult, but take good notes for reference! TAKE THE CLASS!!!!
Idk what everyone's talking about: I found this class HARD, and I'm not dumb. The tests are extremely difficult, application-style questions (being open note helps a bit) that are NOTHING like the practice questions in discussion. Prof says she doesn't want to stress us out during corona time but her class was THE main source of stress for me.
Dr. Pierson is a really kind, caring professor, especially during covid times. Her lectures are very presentation-reliant, and she doesn't use the book during class, but you do need to do the corresponding chapter reading to pass the test. 3 tests: Exam 1, midterm, and the final. Around 3-ish papers with clear grading criteria
Fantastic lecturer and stayed engaged in her class despite being online. Was stuck with this as a GE but solid option in the end. Final and midterm were open-note but relatively tough application questions. Great professor, decent coursework, tough exams.
Professor Pierson was VERY accomodating for online classes. All exams were open book, open note and not proctored, and the few essays are very straightforward and graded by TA's. Lecture sometimes got boring, but the material is definitely applicable to everyday life
Prof Pierson is amazing. Lectures are rather simple and she'd go over the same concept over and over again just to make sure everybody understands. 2 midterms and 1 final. Take careful notes in class and do the reading and you will be fine. 1 short essay and another longer one. TA does all the grading so make sure you show up to discussions. easy A
I absolutely loved Professor Pierson's Intercultural class. It is difficult and you have to do the readings because the exams are difficult due to being on zoom she makes you apply the concepts, instead of just memorizing definitions. However, she is a great lecture and so accessible outside of class.
I really loved her COMM class. The content was amazing and it was all super relevant. I never stressed about this class bc her expectations for you were clearly explained. The tests were also really fair (skim the readings). I will definitely take a class with her again!
She gives clear instructions and explains terms in simple ways over and over again until you get it. Nothing more important than this for an intro course.
Professor Jillian Pierson is very caring and understanding. She offered constructive feedback when asked, through emails or zoom meetings during office hours. The readings for this class are mandatory due to the tests being based on them. There are a couple of papers that have to be 7 pages but they are manageable.
Pierson' s course was honestly such a great experience and a great start to communications. The TA's are so nice and there are no presentations. The papers are so straightforward and simple and thats coming from a person who hates writing. Although the tests can be a bit difficult it is all multiple choice (I recommend a study group)
Sometimes confused by her own slides, seemed unprepared for course material. Do have to clarify it was on Zoom. Used outdated inaccurate stereotypical media content and tried to initiate ingenuine conversations on issues that closely affect many students which made me exit the Zoom within the first five minutes. Avoid unless required by degree.
I AM OBSESSED W PIERSON. Her lectures make potentially boring topics fun. She is hilarious! She has a warm, happy aura. Dont mind9am. I literally enjoy class because of her. It's also so easy. 2 homework assignments that are only the 1at week of classes and 10% of your Grade and is an easy a. Exams so easy. 10% is an easy a paper. No attendance.
not a bad professor but definitely not a good one. although she seems like she knows what she's talking about, the lectures are disorganized and quite often explained in complicated ways. also there are no curves for any of the exams so beware of that.
Ms. Pierson is a great lecturer. She is funny and covers a few important concepts in detail instead of skipping through tons (tip: this means there is less to study). I think in this class there is a slim work load difference between passing and a good grade. I think if you study 1-2 days before the exam and write good papers you will get an A.
Overall a good professor, every now and then she'd say something insensitive. She would really be disrespectful towards cultures, while simultaneously preaching about political correctness. HOWEVER, aside from those RARE instances, she was lovely. So funny, so knowledgable and easily approachable. A couple papers and tests, try and you'll be fine
DONT TAKE! Her tests are impossible and pretty much half the class always fails them not to mention the class is just really boring and TA's are terrible.
Really enjoyed this class however Professor Pierson has a very niche way of teaching that fit perfectly with my learning style. You NEED to take good notes during lectures!!! You can get by without reading, but you will not perform well if you don't take good notes. Although she posts her slides they arent comprehendible without attending lectures
Dr. Pierson is the BEST! So approachable and so funny. I loved the way she lectures. You have to take good notes during lectures bc her slides have no info on them. No attendance, but you need to go to learn material. Reading not really required. A couple papers and two exams. She is so helpful & caring, i loved her class!
This was my first Comm class and it was a great intro to Annenberg. Tests are pretty straight forward. If you read the chapters the tests cover the night before you will perform just fine. Essays are graded easily and Pierson tells the funniest stories and has a welcoming presence.
She is very lovely, and her lectures are almost always interesting! Barely any assignments and essays were graded reasonably. Nice TAs too!!! The two exams were based on readings and lectures. If you don't attend the lectures, the tests might be difficult.
Most useless class I've ever taken. Most theories learned in the class were simply made up out of nowhere - honestly all the stuff learned was common sense but Prof. Pierson managed to make the tests extremely weird and unreasonable. Do not take this class unless you want to bore yourself and be forced to learn stuff that doesn't make any sense.
Pierson is simply so funny and her lectures are very engaging. I took her for COMM 200 and I really enjoyed it. 2 midterms which kinda sucks but other than that, very manageable and easy class. Rarely ever homework. Take her class!
She's a good person but the tests are too difficult and make me feel extremely stressful.
I absolutely love Professor Pierson. Her lectures are fascinating, she is hysterical and engaging, and the course material is super interesting. I could not recommend this class and this professor enough. I will be taking as many of her future classes as I can.
This class is about oversimplifying self-explanatory information. Exam questions are confusing and over-explained. No elaboration and contradicts herself, explains the topics in a way where she would only understand them herself. Also, she is verbally aggressive and oversteps professional boundaries. There are better comm classes to take.
She talks so much that she either ends up contradicting herself or confessing that she ended up confusing herself. She would often talk about things that are very similar and fail to explain the differences. I know too much abt her personal life. Will make faces when she disagrees with a student. Only reason I'm passing is bc my TA was super sweet.
Avoid taking her class! She doesn't care about her students. She would get weirded out if you asked for grade changes and just said, "try harder." There is no reason why her exams are so difficult. She talked about her personal life a bit too much and made class weird.
I studied super hard for the tests but still didn't get good grades. Discussion is useless, and grading for the paper sucks. Pretty negative experience.
The material just overcomplicated basic concepts. Prof Pierson's lectures were at least engaging but her explanations and examples didn't make much sense because she tried so hard to be funny and personal. The tests are fine as long as you study a couple days in advance. Pretty easy A but didn't feel like I gained anything from the class.
I love her. Her lectures and blackboard layout are extremely organized. And she is always ready to help you.
RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN. This professor has no idea what she's teaching, and the so-called theories are just made up things that even first graders can understand. One of the most useless courses I've ever take. Don't even get me started on the grading criteria. Do not take her unless you absolutely hate your life.
personally i don't get all these negative reviews ...? I actually really liked this class and thought prof pierson was super nice and her lectures were interesting. Also, I found her exams to be pretty straightforward and I think the grading on assignments was fair. Don't get scared off by some of these reviews, she's chill and her class was easy.
Very engaging and explains the concepts so well! You HAVE to be there in class to do well on the tests, and she checks attendance. A few papers and multiple choice tests. As long as you take good notes and go to the study sessions you'll do well. GOOD NOTES ARE KEY!!!
this class is SO unnecessarily difficult. the concepts are communication strategies we probably all utilize without thinking, but she manages to make everything so insanely confusing. i study so hard for every exam just for a C+. do NOT take this class
Took 480 last semester and loved it - very engaging lectures, small class size and discussion focused. 3 exams and a couple written assignments, so the work was pretty manageable. Pierson is very nice and cares a lot about students.
I really liked Prof. Pierson! Being in class goes a long way in understanding the material but she used fun examples and kept the class engaged. I loved her pre-test Q&As which made me feel like she really wanted her students to succeed. Would highly recommend!
Such a fun class!! If you can take it, I would highly recommend it. The class is pretty informal, as we all just gossiped about course topics for the whole time period. Really chill environment and fun assignments! Also, I found her grading easier in this class than her others!
I took this class in the Fall of 2023 to fulfill a requirement for my Communication major. Professor Pierson is nice, but her lectures can be quite confusing and dense. Much of the material on the exams comes directly from the lectures, which makes studying difficult. I often found myself needing to review concepts on my own after class.
Great person and professor, makes a typical GE-G more lively. Not that many assignments, so definitely want to do well on them, especially the midterm + final. Lectures are super important, as class is also graded on attendance/participation (has you register attendance every lecture). Overall, solid class to take, fairly easy.
She is a very kind professor and very understanding. She had good lectures and used good examples that made concepts clear. The essays were a lot at times and sometimes she was knit picky with small details in papers, but besides that she was great. The exams were very straightforward and easy as well.
She is great, makes lectures interesting and engaging. She is very helpful in her office hours. Only 2 papers (5-7 pages), the midterm and final are all multiple choice. She is very sweet and understanding and overall cares about your well being and doing well in her class.
I've taken Pierson for two of her other courses already (COMM200 and 480) and interpersonal comm was the best imo. This class was super fun and informal - class discussions revolved around discussion of presentation topics and she gave us a lot of freedom on what we wanted to write about for the final project. Take this class if you can!
extremely lecture and reading heavy. even though slides are posted online they will often not help you unless you go to class. only 3 papers. even though they are tedious, they were pretty fun to write if you understood the concepts taught in class. overall super nice professor and TA's. jillian is super caring and funny
Concepts were not necessarily difficult but MC test q's made them difficult and confusing for no reason. Lectures could sometimes be dense and super confusing, but she was always encouraging questions and participation to clarify anything. TA's didn't seem to be on the same page as each other or the prof, which made some communication unclear.
Lecture heavy class with few grades in the gradebook besides 3 papers and exams. TAs seem to have a lot of freedom with grading, so make sure to clarify with them. Wasn't always the most approachable with questions during test review. Tests had some far fetch questions. Overall a fine class, but ensure you are very well prepared for exams.
Overall a great person and cares about her students. Her grading criteria can be unclear and the readings are largely unconnected to what we talk about in class but the discussions we had during class were interesting and she does keep her lectures relatively engaging! The concepts aren't particularly hard but presentation on tests can be tricky.
this class is a guaranteed A if you're keeping up with the classes and lectures. I almost never did the readings, barely paid any attention in class and pulled off an A-, simply because it was easy and almost common sense--not because Im some genius. the professor herself is definitely a little odd, makes weird remarks in conversation with racism.
She made the topics so confusing and what she taught went against everything in the literature. I'm not sure why anyone would gave this professor a decent grade.
Her lectures contradict the texts. I would avoid taking any of her classes. Better options available and she sometimes has an attitude.
jillian I love u. easier GE ever as long as you go to lecture. Her lecture slides are super vague bc she explains it all in class so if u miss class u will struggle. lectures can get kinda boring but she's rlly nice and will give u an extension or help if u need and I honestly learned a lot from her !!
She's the best! Take this class w/ Pierson and no one else!! To succeed and get an A you really need to show up to class + questions on the exams are straight from lecture so good notes and paying attention are super important. She's really nice and will work with students to make sure they succeed
She really gives good lectures, explains concepts very well and clearly! Exams are a bit tricky, though—they include some minor points that are only spoken about verbally in class but not in the textbook... you need to listen! Overall, it's manageable; I recommend her.
Really kind and helpful professor. Super approachable and good lectures. I really look forward to class.
prof pierson is a great lecturer! super chill, lets us do group discussions each class so it's not just 2 hrs of lecture. uses funny, relatable examples like tiktoks/memes to help things click. didn't use the textbook much tbh so just borrow it from the library bc she keeps them on hold for us. 3 big exams (study w knowt!) & 2–3 major papers.
DO NOT TAKE!!! Most awful prof I've had. Very degrading to students who reach out to her. She tells students to make a video for a final project then takes marks off for anyone who prepares a script?? Says that she would never give full marks on any assignment bc "nothing is worth publication." Class is fine. She is the problem.
The class is small, so expect to participate a lot. Her attendance policy is pretty lax, considering how interactive the class is, and she allows up to six unexcused absences. The exams were free-response, so you had to know the material very well. We lost points using the wrong adjective in our definitions. Other than that, I enjoyed the class.
She's easily the worst professor I've had. Bans laptops claiming they distract her, but really her lectures are unbearable. Class is easy to pass, but for a GE, pick someone else. Every lecture includes random, baseless comments, and she takes an hour to cover five slides while rambling.
Rude, rushed, & disorderly teaching. Would call out students in very unprofessional and disrespectful ways IN LECTURE. And overall, not receptive to questions, often being very condescending and demeaning in her passive-aggressive, retaliatory responses. It's an easy class, just remember the theories, take notes (no cpus allowed), & you'll be fine.
Grade is based on only a few assignments. Tanked my gpa n for what Very biased on what a “good” essay is. Tas grade harshly and unfairly. Lectures and slides are very vague. If u don't go to class and take notes u won't get the lectures. listen to the bad reviews take someone else unless ig ur an amazing writer
She is not good. Actually I would say she is the opposite of good (BAD). She overshares about weird aspects of her personal life and reuses course material for many classes. She doesn't have any empathy. I find her absolutely frustrating. Do not take her classes. You will be sad.
I thought this would be a fairly light COMM GE but I wish I didnt take it. The TAs grade the two essays SO HARSH AND FOR WHAT. The exams are a little better but not by much. The class and content isn't even hard but i swear the prof makes it so much more difficult than it should be and its tanked my grade. Take another GE if u can
shes meh, her grading critera is not clear and she grades HARSHLY
lectures can get kind of dry + prof asks for no computer rule (altho not everyone followed it). for the essays, i def recommend reaching out to your TA for feedback/guidance. for the midterm + final, both were alright, but i personally did a lot better on the final.
Jillian is the best. To those saying she "overshares", would you prefer a robotic professor? Jillian's eccentric, welcoming & refreshing energy made my week and I always looked forward to her class. I rarely participate in class, but she brought something new out of me. The concepts are also interesting and can make you introspective.
My comment keeps getting blocked, but just don't do it. It's not worth it
