He was a cool guy, his lectures are really boring though - but he smiles a lot!
Great teahcer. I didn't do well, but i realized i was the one to blame for that, not him. He was great.
Very boring lectures....except the one where he played with liquid nitrogen and his other demonstrations.
GREAT teacher! Explains everything very well, sometimes too well. on the 2nd test, a lot of people got a particular question wrong- same exact question was on 3rd test (20 or 30 pointer on 100 point test)
did a great job at teaching me the fundamentals. nice teacher, before him i had no knowledge of chemistry...i ended up doing very well in susequent courses.
Great!!!!
good talker but gives horrible notes for you to learn off of in class. all the other CHEM 101 professors notes are clear and actually cover the information we need to know. Atwood just expects you to know everything he teaches you whereas the other professors take you through all the areas step by step from definition to ending product.
Professor Atwood is extremely clear at explaining everything in a way students will understand. Lecture was sometimes long but enjoyable for the most part. You can also just read the textbook and study if you are strong in sciences.
Very Nerdish, but loveable, Very dry class, but you learn everything you need to
He's a great guy. The class is tough, so read your textbook before going to lecture (he focuses on key points in each chapter) no attendance, 5 min break in every class, 4 quizzes, 2 tests and 1 final. On his final a majority of the questions were the SAME EXACT ones on the previous tests from the same year. bonus questions on every exam.
very nice guy but not to clear and goes over few examples that need prior intensive book review. i would recommend the other chem teacher with the heavy British accent. he taught a few of Atwoods classes and was great.
Your stupidity is challenged in his class. Very easy. Nice guy. I would have to say, quite a useless class though.
Not a bad professor, funny man. Caring.
Cute and caring man, who tries to relate to us. teaching style is notes and examples.
great professor. I sit in on his lecture instead of going to my assigned one because he's actually helpful! Not like some of these other professors we have for chem...
Atwood is a great chemistry teacher. He explains everything really well and if you don't understand he is so willing to answer any questions. He has been teaching for so long he keeps the class interested by telling funny stories from previous years. His office hours are very helpful and 1 to 1 and he also will answer any ?'s through email etc
Love this teacher. if you pay attention in class you'll definitely get a B or higher. hopefully. tests are great. very easy. remember tho. pay attention from the beginning or you'll definitely get lost. very helpful and easy to understand teacher.
Definitely the best chem101 professor. Tests are extremely easy. Lecture is boring, but he is friendly and makes funny/awkward jokes, so I strongly recommend.
Dr. Atwood is a really good prof to have if chemistry isn't your thing. I had a really hard time with it in high school, but he explained everything really well and I got an A. Everyone complains about mastering chemistry, but it really does help you learn the material. Just go to class and do the hw and you'll be fine.
Best professor from the three available sections of 101. By the end of the year his lecture was filled with students from other sections. Pace was perfect, covered all material doing relevant examples that showed up on tests. Has a somewhat awkward sense of humor but it made the class interesting. Do the homeworks and you should do well.
Great teacher. Always made the material easy to understand. He cracks a lot if funny jokes and does some fun experiments duing lecture. It was the easiest A i ever got in a chemistry class.
Great Professor. Actually teaches you the concepts and lets you understand them. Works thru problems during class. Great teaching style, take him for chem 101!
Goes kind of slow, but the best chem 101 professor
Good teacher. Probably the best for chem 101.
Best professor for Chem 101...really helpful and clear in teaching.
The BEST chem 101 teacher. He's a cute little older man that really just loves what he does. He's always willing to help out during office hours or schedule an appointment. Great professor!
I had him for physical chemistry, very nice professor and his graduate students were awesome for extra help during office hour.
He is such a good professor! Chemistry 101 can be tough for some people with a weak chem background but he made it easy. He is always so happy, and he's one of those people I would feel terrible every saying anything bad about.
He explains things so well, he's always willing to help/answer questions and is never in a bad mood. He makes funny jokes in class that'll make you laugh no matter what! I would definitely recommend this guy to others! I wish I could have him next semester for Chem 102!
good stuff
best che 101 teacher! very good, goes slow but easier to learn! study and you should do fine
This guy is a good teacher. He knows his stuff and wants to help. Lecture is dry but its chem so to be expected. He goes thru example problems in class that really help on the online hmwk. Tests weren't too bad and were always fair. The labs could be tricky but the TAs for the most part were really helpful and they have a special chem help room to.
Amazing chemistry professor. Very clear, helpful, and kind. Even if you don't get him as a teacher, you can still attend his lectures since the classes are pretty connected. The textbook's good for reference.
He is such a caring person and is always willing to help with whatever you throw at him. I really disliked the online homework assignments, but I suppose they were good preparation for exams. Exams were difficult and wordy but the department makes them collectively, not just Dr. Atwood. Just do the HW and go to class- not too hard to get an A
This is an amazing chemistry professor and try to get him because he is helpful and teaches well so that students understand the material. I didn't really use the textbook and still managed an A because of the MasteringChemistry homeworks which are of great help. The labs are very annoying, just go to NSC110 to get help so you won't score very low.
He's a great teacher. He's definitely the teacher you'd want to have for chemistry.
It's basically a boring class if you know all the material already. 40% of the questions came directly from the homeworks and the questions he did in class. I didn't went to any of the lectures during the last three weeks, but still manage to get an A. For those who took AP CHEM: just sit back in your dorm and dance! Easy chemistry class.
Before I took chem101 the only other chem i took was regents level min 10th grade. I did horrible and figured i would do horrible in this class too. only attwood made it super easy to understand and as long as you study and go to class it shouldnt be hard for you either. In chem 102 now and i wish i had attwood again. Its such a sweet man.
Best chem prof out there. Has printable lecture notes but leaves a lot of open spaces on the notes so you have to copy, but it helps you learn a lot. Very helpful guy, does plenty of example which greatly prepare you for hw and the exams. Makes himself available to help, take this guy!
This class is pretty straight forward in that if you go to class, do your homeworks, and do the old exams, you'll do fine on the tests. Atwood is a great professor none the less because he's not just any old boring chemistry professor.
Gives plenty of examples. Very helpful.
One of the best chem 101 professors. Good at explaining, and provides a lot of examples.
I had morrow as a teacher, couldn't stand her.. went to Atwood's and fell in love! HE is an awesome professor. Everything makes sense. He makes the tests, so he buckles down and teaches what you need to know. Answers any questions you may have. Such a sweet guy. Strongly recommend him.
Atwood was without a doubt my favorite professor this semester. He was very clear and understanding towards student's problems. I would highly recommend him.
One of the best teachers that I have ever had. He has lecture notes online that he completes with you in class with examples included. Even in a big lecture he takes all questions and makes sure you understand. Offers a lot of out of class support too. Material is easy for a science mind but anyone can get an A for sure.
Atwood is like the grandpa you wish you had. He is very friendly and provides many examples so you understand the material including in-class demos. I got a 3 in AP Chem but got an A in this class no problem! Take notes and go to the chem help center while doing MasteringChemistry. My only complaint is that labs SUCK, but that's for all of CHE 101.
Best Chem professor. Explains everything in detail. Perfect for students who either don't like chemistry or can't understand it
Easy to understand. Answers all questions in lecture. Very easy to follow. Great professor
Ok I am taking this professor for CHE101 class. He is the most intelligent and super! nice professor I never met. I am definitely freshman and he really explains really well. Only the part is sort of weak at is Molecular Orbital explaining antibonding and bonding but, that material is only covered 5 points. I really liked him and TAKE THIS CLASS
He's the greatest chemistry professor. People attend his lectures even when they're not in his class because he's so good. He's head of the chemistry department and teaches right out of the book. I actually felt like he cared about his students. Even answers questions in a lecture of 300+. If you have the option you would be NUTS not to take him!
He doesn't go by power point and he writes everything out (examples). he reads all emails and answers questions before and after class. You don't need the textbook at all just read the lecture outlines and do mastering chemistry.
Do not buy the textbook. you don't need it. He is an awesome teacher who always has a smile on his face. I respect him so much as a person and teacher. He is helpful and the class is not too bad either. Lab is a pain and the reports are harshly graded but he does not grade labs.
Thought I would do terrible in this class but ended up being pretty easy. Atwood turned out to be one of the best professors ever!! He takes the time to answer any questions that the class has. Wish I had a professor like him for Bio.
Honestly, he's a great professor but pretty boring. I learned everything from the textbook and mastering chem and got a good grade. He's really clear however, I can't pay attention to him, his voice is really boring. I think there was a curve i'm not sure but overall he's great.
Very good professor in my opinion. Very helpful one on one and very clear with his examples. Made me feel extremely confident with future chemistry endeavors. Definitely highly recommended for Chem 101!!!
Dr Atwood's lectures are very comprehensive, some students complained that there were exam questions they hadn't been taught to answer - this didn't happen to people who had Atwood
Mixed feelings about Dr. Atwood. Very nice guy and he makes his lessons very simple and easy to understand. However once you get to the harder topics he does struggle to convey the material. Personally I loved him and would recommend him to anyone, probably the best 101 teacher. See him in office hours for added help!
Really good guy. He's just one of those….those good guys. LIke not a bad one. A good one….a damn good one.
Dr. Atwood was an extremely pleasant professor to have. You could tell he was passionate about chemistry and teaching it to his students. He made lectures interesting, either by doing in-class demonstrations, making jokes, or directly asking the class questions to engage them. Definitely one of the best chemistry 101 professors at UB!
Atwood is THE MAN. I was atrocious at chemistry and hated it when I got to college and now, not only do i like it, but I understand it as well. He is hilarious, approachable, and friendly. I'm going to miss him next semester. Wish he taught all the chem courses!
This man saved my butt, let alone my grade. Switching professors and sticking with chem101 was one of the best decisions I made all year. I was on the verge of dropping out and taking it over the summer until I decided to sit in on Dr. Atwood's lecture as a last resort. I owe this man so much. There's a reason why his lectures are packed.
I hate anything Chemistry, but Atwood got me through it. They don't come much more helpful than this man. Atwood is extremely nice too and always asked if there were any questions on that given morning. He has his moments of humor as well.
THE BEST PROFESSOR you will ever have at UB. Dr Atwood is great man. He is always willing to help. I am in my second semester as a sophomore and have not come across anyone like him. He will help you out and is concerned about your grades. His practice tests are very similar to the actual tests. By far the best proffessor I have ever had.
Awesome professor. The only reason I got a C+ was because someone stole my lab book. Otherwise I would have had an A. He is so dedicated to teaching and makes chemistry fun. Expect PACKED lectures because students who aren't registered for his section will show up. Chem department has same exam for every section so come to his lecture.
Amazing Professor. He goes through a lot of examples in class. He is approachable if you have any questions. He is honestly the BEST chemistry professor at UB.
Atwood is amazing!!! He gives tons of examples in class which are almost exactly the same as what is on the test. The most helpful means of studying is my practicing the mastering chemistry questions because they use very similar examples. He makes chemistry enjoyable, but lab absolutely sucks.
Not a bad course with Atwood if you do your homework and pay attention during lectures. Huge curve. 2 tests and a final.
Best chem professor out there. Atwood is the head chair, so he knows exactly what is on the test. It is extremely important to study using the mastering chemistry because most questions are similar or exactly the same. Know whats on the homework, and you'll get an A.
He is amazing. He will be the best money that u ever spent in ub.
Dr. Atwood is perhaps the most favored CHE101 professor at UB and it is evident through his passion for Chemistry. He creates fill-in-the-blank notes for his students and explains general concepts well; however, the level of difficulty of his exams are much more difficult than what he teaches.
One word: AMAZING!! I didn't have Dr. Atwood, but I attended his lectures because my actual professor was helpless. He writes out his notes, uses TONS of examples to explain concepts, and is VERY approachable. He talks very slowly and records all his lectures. He really cares and also makes the exams, giving hints on what's on them. I loved him!!!
Class could get long and boring but he is very informative and knows what he is talking about. Tests are super easy but labs can get pretty rough.
Mr. Atwood is a great teacher and is respected by many of his students. He makes his own outlines and his VERY helpful during office hours. However, his notes during class were not very helpful when it came to the homework Mastering Chem. You would have to go to Guldes slides for that. Overall, a great man I wish he taught Chem 102 cause he's great
Such a great professor! He makes chemistry easy and understandable for the most part. Yes, you will have to read the textbook if you want complete understanding of what is going on, but he does a great job! Really funny guy, and I wish I could have him again next semester. Homework is mostly online. Overall, the lecture can be really enjoyable
Professor Atwood is wonderful! He is extremely patient and goes slow enough that everyone can understand him. He teaches in great detail so that you fully understand concepts, but is meticulous enough that you absorb every bit without cramming it into your mind.
Dr. Atwood is a classic grandpa professor. Very smart, and gives lots of opportunity to ask questions. Very organized. Bad handwriting but he likes to attempt humor often.
Atwood writes his notes as he goes in class, which i love b/c it means he won't be speeding through it. hated chem in hs but atwood makes chem 101 not so bad, kind of enjoyable. Lectures are pretty good, and recorded. mastering chem for hw is the painful part tho. He is a typical grandpa... Go to his office hrs. super helpful. he is just so nice.
I loved Atwood. Started out sucking in 101 but after going to his office his hours, he helped me understand everything that was covered in the last few chapters. He's really helpful and super nice. My recommendation is to set up one on ones with him so you don't get distracted by other students. He goes to all football and basketball games. Say hi!
Atwood is great! He gives good notes, and takes time to answer questions even in large lectures. Go to office hours, or set up appointments, he is flexible and willing to help. Tests and labs are graded tough and for accuracy, do homework problems for practice. MasteringChem is not fun, but it does help. Don't put it off until last minute.
Chem 101 was a tough class, but Atwood was an amazing professor. He took a hard class and he did his very best to make it bearable. He explained everything very well, was EXTREMELY approachable, and was more than willing to help students when they came to his office hours or asked him questions. Great professor. Definitely take CHE 101 with Atwood.
Still one of my favorites. Overall a great professor. Does each problem with class rather than having it already done and just lecturing. Made a difficult class easy. Mastering chem hw sucks but no way around that.. Hw quizzes and practice exams prepare you for all exams. Didn't open book once. Recorded lectures. Take him to get an A.
Atwood was the best professor I ever had. He made CHE101 easy for me, because his notes are concise and he actually does each problem along with the class instead of just explaining them as he clicks on a powerpoint. He understands college students as well. He encourages us to go to games and live life outside of studying, which I found respectable
I love jimmy. he is the chemistry daddy.3
Jim is a great professor and his lectures make sense (most of the time) but the examples you do in class do not match up to the ones on the HW's and quizzes/exams. The examples you do in class are far much easier than the ones you actually have to work with. He sometimes also will skip steps and that can get confusing.
Take Atwood. He writes the exams so he teaches you exactly what will be on it. Walks you through example problems during lecture. Lecture is boring but helps. Mastering Chem is mad annoying but the quiz & exam questions are directly from there. Don't need textbook but hw answers are in there, get free PDF version. CHE101 is easy A, just do the hw.
His dad jokes make the class bearable. He is very clear on what the expectations are for the tests and quizzes and is good at explaining things in a way that will make you understand. Going to class is important because he gives little bits of information that is not in the notes that will help you with the homework.
Dr. Atwood is very funny and knowledgeable. The class can be very boring at times.
He's okay. Pretty good at teaching the math parts of chemistry ie moles, molarity or heat of formation.
He only gives you notes that you actually need. He makes the exams so he teaches you whats on the exam as far as the multiple choice goes. He goes straight to the point and does not talk in circles. He does not however record his lecture but has an outline of notes that you should follow along with in class.
Mastering chem is the worst
Jim Atwood is a very endearing professor and always seems very good natured. He wants to make sure you really understand the material and does a pretty good job of explaining it. On the downside, he does talk very slowly so you may get bored, but he also makes jokes a lot. He's basically the whole class's grandpa.
Atwood is really great. He's caring and does his best to thoroughly explain concepts in class. The homework can be long and grueling at times but they're really not that bad. He doesn't post notes or lectures online which is his only downfall so going to class is important. His tests are very straightforward and he prepares you well for them.
Take Dr. Atwood! By far the best CHE101 professor, I really wish he also taught 102! He teaches exactly what will be on the exam and is very clear and thorough. I came in very nervous about chemistry as my high school had a weak program, but I ended up with an A thanks to Dr. Atwood's lectures. Definitely recommend!
Atwood is straight to the point when it comes to lecture. He gives you exactly what you need to know for the exams. If you use his notes to study and also do practice questions on mastering chem, nothing on the exams will surprise you
This was the hardest class I took this semester. Atwood tells you what he wants out of his students and is straightforward but his class is hard. If you don't do well on the 3 exams you take then you won't have a shot. The class is graded on 5%homework 20%lab 75%exams. So study hard for exams and use the TAs as resources. B+ before final B- after
Dr. Atwood is a nice guy who cares about his students. His lectures have hundreds of students so if you want his help you MUST seek him out. All of the quiz and exam material is taken directly from the homework. LOOK AT PAST EXAMS. You MUST study for this course, or you will end up like me and have to retake it (my fault) as it is very hard.
Never went to class after the first week. Chem 1 is an easy A. tests were fair.
not good
His lectures are absolutely horrible. He writes his notes down and you cant read what he writes. He give no background information on what you learn which makes understanding chemistry impossible. I ended up going to a different professor for lecture.
Atwood is a very good professor for auditory learners. He presents the information and that's about it. If science isn't your strong suit I wouldn't recommend him for lecture. Although if you meet with him one on one for questions during office hours he can be a little bit more helpful.
Although Dr. Atwood is a very nice man. I personally did not like his teaching method. He simple just restates what is in the powerpoint slides and does practice questions rather than showing you how to apply the concepts. I really liked him as a person but not as a teacher.
Hes not the best teacher , hes somebody you go to for review. Gulde is better !
GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Atwood makes himself very accessible if you make an effort and is very clear in his explanations. The TAs tend to make errors on test grades so be sure to check over. Atwood has very clear class notes and lectures. Nicest man and definitely my favorite professor Ive had to date. The curve is not very forgiving so study!
Dr Atwood was nice and funny, but a poor teacher. He basically just wrote everything on the notes without explaining why, and then asked "does anyone have questions" and if nobody answered he would move on, but then when he asked a question to the class he was shocked nobody can answer, since he didnt teach anything. Watch guide's lectures online
Very educated but can get pretty boring, especially early in the am.
Taking it fully online, there's not much you can get out of his lectures. He holds your hand through basic practice problems, but he doesn't explain too well, and kinda makes people feel bad for asking (valid) questions. You really want to focus on homework. As long as you know the HW inside out, you should be good.
He's supper nice and caring, he will answer your question with a smile even if you interrupt him. always ask questions from him and only him because he is really good at explaining it. if you wanna get A in this class watch "Organic Chemistry tutor" on youtube if you're confused, go to his office hours and DO LOTS OF SAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR EXAMS.
I struggled my way through this class starting with a C- from the first test. His recorded lectures aren't actually him so when he has discussions, go to them. For the tests and quizzes, make sure you know the material from the homework really well but his lectures are pretty much useless
I took this class online, three days a week but two of those are office hours. The third one is discussion and make sure to go to it. The recorded lectures were done by a different professor and weren't that good, so if you have questions, make sure to go to discussion or office hours. The thing that saved me was reading the textbook.
This class requires you to buy a online textbook and set-up to do your homework on. The homework are tedious but does get you prepared for your quizzes and exams. The friday discussions were very helpful for questions and clarification. Study well for quizzes and tests as it is recorded(cant cheat) he provides practice tests and answers to prepare.
Well, it's chemistry. You better keep up, don't fall behind as the material all builds. Definitely study, and office hours are lit. Don't make my mistake of not studying, that's why I got a C. Getting at least a B is very doable if you dedicate time.
To preface, Atwood seems like a great person, but his teaching of Inorganic Chemistry (CHE321) was less than ideal. Only graded by 3 exams, lecture material was not well organized, the class avg ended up being a 38%. I never felt like I understood much of anything. With better organization, this class would be a lot more tolerable.
I feel like this class couldve been taught so much better He was super disorganized, and didnt really explain anything and just assumed we knew it. felt like he was talking to grad students. only graded on 3 exams and the average for the exams were like never over 40. hw was not graded but shouldve been
Chemistry is already a pretty hard subject to teach, but this man is not only now getting to the age where he is missing chunks of simple arithmetic during lectures and not explaining his methods. But when asking him to explain certain calculations he just repeats what he says before thinking that you would understand.
JUST DON'T TAKE HIM 6 pop quizzes and 3 exams you have to be a very detailed student and study before every class. he's a great guy but his teaching is some of the worst, some may call it outdated. Too many topics and we don't review them, we just move on to the next. you've been warned
This class was supposed to be used to help with Chem 101, but I didn't really find it all that helpful. He went through some material in class and homeworks were easy and short but it seemed like my time would've been better off studying chem for that one hour a week than going to the class where I didn't really learn a whole lot.
