Barbee truly is a great guy.. But he's just not the best professor. The material on the tests/ quizzes do not match up to the material in the lectures. He makes things 10 times harder than it would be if things were the same. Quizzes are online so thats good but they are also weighted more than the exams. Just be prepared to study in this class.
Barbee is a great professor. I enjoyed the class and the way topics were related beck to current events and scientific studies. The class itself is a lot of quizzes, with four theme tests, and in class questionnaires that count as your attendance grade, so go to class still. He gives study guides for tests but it doesn't always correlate to tests.
He is a very nice guy and really loves Biology; however, I struggled with the tests. You really need to study to pass the tests and actually show up to class for Questionnaires
Jim Barbee is an excellent teacher, he knows his stuff. He is very passionate about the subject which makes the course somewhat more interesting for you if you aren't a huge science person. The class is over 200+ people so attendance isn't taken, but honestly I dont think I could have a passing grade without going. Plus, he is a pretty funny guy.
Barbee is a great guy, I'm taking him again next semester. His class is all lectures with quizzes at the end of each subject that are online (open notes, open book, open internet). He does 4 theme exams which you can do pretty well on as long as you study the questions and subjects mentioned in the quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory but it helps.
Barbee was one of my favorite profs this semester. He is such a sweet guy and really cares about the material and sharing his love for biology with his students. He takes biological issues and applies them to real-world situations making the topics much more interesting to learn about. I definitely plan on taking more of his classes if I can.
Tries really hard to be funny but actually seemed like a really nice guy and is obviously very invested in the information. Only 4 tests and he provided study guides.
His quizzes are difficult because he never gives you all of the information for them. Just makes the class so much harder than it needs to be.
I am currently taking Barbee and his quizzes cover things that his lectures either don't cover, or things that are briefly mentioned in the lectures. So, even though the quizzes are online, they are still ore challenging than they need to be. Tests are almost 50% of your grade, and quizzes are about 25% of your grade.
Freaking Jim Barbee, gotta love him! Attendance isn't required, but going to class really really helps. All quizzes are online and can be found on quilt, but tests are in person and can be pretty difficult. Jim is a great guy though, and even though class is huge you can still ask questions and he'll answer them. Just go to class and you'll be fine
Barbee makes class much harder than it needs to be. His powerpoints do not relate to anything. Most of the time they consist of pictures of random things that he goes on tangents about. Your best bet is to read over the textbook before exams. His online quizzes are quite difficult because he hardly talks about any of the material in class.
He's a sweet old man, but his jokes are terrible. It's a lecture class with 200+ people, so attendance isn't mandatory, but he does questionnaires for attendance somedays. Make sure you're there for those because attendance is a good part of your grade. Also, his quizzes are very difficult. Most quiz content is not discussed in class.
He is a great teacher TAKE HIM! Super funny and nice. Take 10 online quizzes and have two attempts each. 4 tests and 10 questionaires. Not mandatory attendance. Like any test you have to study but they are pretty consistent with the lectures. Lectures can be long and boring but class is short. Second tine with him and love him!
Barbee is so sweet! His lectures aren't super interesting, but you don't have to go. He puts his PowerPoints online so you can teach yourself, but you'll definitely have to study for tests. He does questionnaires that are only open for 5 minutes in class, so either have someone tell you when he opens it or just go. He also does exam help sessions!
Barbee knows most of the people in Bio 1201 are not science majors so topic criteria is not extremely difficult. Most of the answers to the online quizzes were online, and he switched in-class exams to online. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he takes questionnaires as attendance at the end of each topic. Moderate amount of effort and you'll be fine
Barbee is amazing. Makes biology interesting for those who are just taking it for their gen ed. He gives you 2 attemps on quizzes, helps when needed, and he is funny! He takes random attendance online that closes after a couple of minutes so going to class is important- missing 1 can really drop your grade. His class is easy if you pay attention!
Barbee's class was fairly easy. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are questionnaires that count as credit and I feel like I would be lost if I didn't go. His quizzes are online and you can use your notes and his powerpoints. Tests are 50% of your grade so make sure you study. I would take him again, he is great for a GenEd professor.
I love Jim Barbee so much that I went out of my way to make sure I was in his class again for my second biology. He is so cute and loves birds and makes class interesting even for non-majors. 10/10 recommend
Barbee is awesome. People who say he is a bad professor think they can get by with minimal effort b/c its gen ed. He is very reasonable and on multiple occasions has given me credit back for quiz questions because I made a good argument. Go to his office hours and don't skip lecture and you will do very well
Jim is a great instructor. Beware of questionnaires he has in class since they can either make or break your grade. His quizzes are easy and test are semi hard.
Jim tries to make class as interesting as possible for students. The class is powerpoint lecture based. Show up to class to get a better understanding of the material. Online quizzes are assigned and are a good grade booster. Tests require more studying and preparation, as they are in class. Jim is fairly funny and will occasionally make a joke.
Barbee is a nice guy but is the absolute worst instructor I have EVER had. What he teaches in class has almost no connection with what he tests on and he always asks why test grades are so low. The tests are extremely difficult, especially compared to what we learn in class. I would NEVER take him again, even if my degree depended on it.
Jim Barbee is a professor who actually tries to make the material interesting for the students. He lectures every class so if you want to do well on the tests, you will show up to the lectures. He is a nice man and you can easily make an A in the class if you put in the work and study.
The toughest thing about this class were the questionnaires, which were basically pop quizzes that would count towards your attendance grade. The class itself is pretty straightforward, Barbee gives you a study guide for every exam. Even though all the power points are online I would still recommend going to class.
The class consists of 4 exams (multiple choice), a couple quizzes, and participation. The class is straight forward and Barbee is very caring about his students. Will require some studying, but he provides study guides that are very true to the exams (and he goes over them)
Random surveys are the only ways he can tell if you come to class, but be prepared to study your butt off for the like four tests there are a semester. I'm not a big science person, so they took up a lot of my time.
"Beware of Pop Questionnaires," not quizzes. Coming to class is important, and I wish I would have done it more. Even though this is your typical unimportant Gen Ed class, Barbee makes it miserable with his lecture's. He's a nice professor though, just strike up a conversation about birds and he will love you.
I really liked this class! Bio 1201 was the absolute worse but this class was actually one of my favorites. I hate science but professor Barbee made it as interesting as possible and showed a lot of cute animals videos. As long as you fill out and study the study guides you will do great on his tests and the quizzes are fairly easy!
You need to go to class because he gives pop "questionnaires" to take attendance. He gives a LOT of quizzes outside of class for a gen ed, but they can help boost your grade. He really cares about his students learning biology so if you're looking for a class to blow off, this isn't it. Overall he's a pretty good professor, but cares too much.
Cares for students and tries to make it personal despite the huge class size, 4 tests, quiz on each chapter, takes attendance 13 times the whole semester via questionnaire, makes jokes and tries to make class enjoyable. Would take again
He genuinely cares about his students and will provide as much help as he can. His attendance is kind of necessary because he occasionally does attendance questionnaires for a grade but if you have friends in the class or refresh your AsULearn page every now and then you won't miss them. His lectures are interesting and his powerpoints are online.
he taught a lecture hall the lecture are nice and easy to follow questionare are attendance all quizzes and test are on quizlet
His approach of mixing 'controversial issues' into units was not appreciated and made it hard to focus or study, as it was hard to know what would be on the test. Lectures are ok, but he seemed reasonably nice. You have to show up for in class pop questionnaires. Online quizzes got very annoying very fast. You have to be vigilant about them.
Barbee is a very good professor and is specific about what your grade consists of. The lectures are long and heavy but he posts them online. As long as you study, you can easily get a good grade.
Prof Barbee is really kind and he's funny, but his class is 100% lecture heavy. I may be biased in my rating because his teaching style doesn't work for me. He just talks and talks. Exams and quizzes are a LOT harder than the study guides and include questions w/ info you never heard in class. If you skip, you'll miss questionnaires, so don't skip.
I failed biology twice before taking Barbee. He is by far the easiest to understand professor, and will bend over backwards to help students understand and pass. Best experience with a professor Ive ever had. Great guy, funny lectures.
Barbee is a great prof, however his class is so boring. He talks forever and the exams and quizzes have info we never talked about and they aren't on the ppts! Im taking him again because he drops the lowest quiz & exam grade. Easy A if you memorize study guides
Honestly I did not show up to many lectures and wish I had. He genuinely wants you to ask questions during the lecture if he is not being clear. My advice is to study hard for the first exam and set a good foundation, you don't have to do too well on the rest if you make an A on the first. SHOW UP FOR THE QUESTIONNAIRES! Easy bump to your grade.
I loved Professor Barbee's classes for both 1201 and 1202. His classes are pretty much entirely lectures, but he makes them interesting and applicable to the real world so it's easy to understand for someone that isn't great with science. The tests are exactly like the lectures so if you go to class you'll do well. Highly recommend
Professor Barbee is great. He made biology somewhat interesting (to someone who hates bio). His classes are lecture heavy, but he makes them fun and makes a lot of jokes. He doesn't really assign out of class work, but there are 4 tests which were pretty hard for me, but you should do fine if you study. Also he drops the lowest test, & quiz grade.
Barbee really cares about his classes and it shows. Sometimes his lectures aren't the most interesting, but he always tries to encourage participation. There are easy participation points that you can get by showing up to class, and he drops the lowest test//quiz grade. I learned a lot from his class, if you need to get a bio credit take him!
Barbee has been my favorite professor at App so far. You can't miss class if there is a questionarre, and there's about 2 or 3 every unit. He is super funny and tries to make lectures as interesting as they can be, considering the subject. The tests and quizzes are pretty straightforward if you know whats going on. I would definitely take him again
He is very lenient with students. His lectures are funny and interesting! As long as you study and do well on the tests you will get an A. You can definitely pass without showing up.
He is a great guy that is very funny, he is lecture heavy but if you show up to class and really listen then you should do well in the class.
I had him for online and he didn't give to much work at all. His assignments were open for a whole week, which allows plenty of time. to do them. I have had friends who had him in person and they also really enjoyed taking his class.
I took Biology1202 with Professor Barbee, he was great and very understanding during this pandemic. 10/10 reccomend.
Only required to show up the first class for intros. He taught on zoom during the class time but attendance was optional, posted recorded lectures online. Had one short quiz and questionnaire/discussion post every week. Gives a week to do assignments. Hes very nice & responds to emails quick. Provides powerpoints and articles related to lectures.
I really liked professor Barbee. I had him for BIO 1201 online and he was very understanding. He gave a whole week to complete assignments and didn't assign too much work. The zoom meetings were optional every week which was nice as well.
I absolutely loved Professor Barbee! His class is super easy and you can tell he cares about his students and what he is teaching. I definitely recommend taking his class.
Took him twice and if I was a biology major Id take him many more times. Favorite professor!
