Great new teacher! 75% of students get A's. If you plan on going to class at least once a week and sometimes twice you'll get an A. He's cool too! Brings candy for the class and always e-mails you when you skip to tell you what was covered.

He's such a great instructor. He always attempts to help the students out in many ways. His tests are also easy. Particularly, he often offers the students the best solution for any problem. He literally wants all the students to get good grades. This class is highly recommended.

He is a GREAT teacher i've ever met!!he is very helpful!!high EQ for answering those stupid questions repidly but not getting mad~easy test,and he will give a sample exam paper to student for review...it EXACTLY the same!very nice teacher!he treats students very well!

Although a lot of material in Music1 are boring, he tries to make it more interesting. He offers a lot of extra credits. If you miss the exam, take it another day or get more extra credits. You get the 2nd and 3rd and more chance to recover. Great personality and a great teacher!

This guy set the standard for what music professor should be. He's clear, helpful, and very patient when answering repetitive questions. He doesn't limit the class to just boring lectures; we actually get a musical ensemble going on in the class. You have to be in a coma to get anything below a B.

Super fair and patient. Makes things interesting by doing lots of group rhythm exercises. You have to study to get a good grade, and it helps if you have some music experience, but he will try and help you if you don't. Wish he taught all classes.

Great teacher. He makes the Music Teory Class very exciting and fun. He is always there to help you if you do not understand what he said. Very professional. I strongly recommend him for Fundamentals of Music.

when i came to los angeles i dicided to study music so i took his class for the first semester of my education. i did not to know english so much on that time and i told him ,and after that he attention to me much more than other student and he was very nice to me and i just say beside of he is a great teacher he is a great person and very kind

Very cool guy. Funny and is able to take some verbal torture himself :) I had a blast and learned a lot. You should know a bit about music or at least be interested. Expect to put some time into it but if you love music or even interested - it's easy. Even though it was not hands-on I still feel like my piano skill got better and I got an A.

Great teacher. Great for non-musician/music major students looking for a fine arts requirement. If you wish to learn theory and have had little background training in it, he is great! I highly recommend this class.

He is the best professor in SMC~!! His quizes are very easy~ you just need to pay attention in class and you don't need to study~ I highly recommend you to take him~

great professor.... he's cool with turning in late homework... the quizzes are so easy... class was fun and very interesting... i took the class in order to learn how to read music and i'm happy to say that i learned alot.... i highly recommend take him!!!!

This guy is extremely helpful and will go out of the way to help you. He is very lenient with his grading, I took his class online, and he let me revise some of my assignments and then turn them in. Really good guy, definitely take him

Prof. Bergman is such a cool professor...He s laid-back, informative and very helpful...The class is very interesting but you will have to want to do the work and practice if you want to successfully learn the fundamentals of music...All in all...The bass playing professor is awesome!

prof. bergman is a very nice guy and teaches theory in a very understandable way. he makes you sing and tap out rhythms, but it's totally bearable. if you memorize the circle of fifths, like he tells you to, you will pass. music theory is a hard class to teach, and he does it excellent. love ya mr. bergman. he's very very laid back

I took music 32 online, but I did learn a lot. There is a madatory concert report. I had the greatest time at the hollywood bowl. After Dr. Bergman's class I really appreciate music. Dr. Bergman is also very helpful and sincerely sweet

Prof. Bergman was great. If you are not a music major and have to take a music class take him. He makes it interesting. There are 3 mandatory concert reports. The quizzes are easy he gives you study guides which are word for word whats on the test. Easy A

Well he's pretty cool. It's not a hard class. Its just music. you take notes..take quizzes..and u must past the final to past the class. you also have to go to 2 concerts..which are worth a lot of your grade..so if u cant go to any classical concerts..u shouldn't take the class. other than that. he's cool..sometimes funny.

This class was so easy. I just needed to study a maximum an hour before the test and maybe 20 minutes or less for the listening. For me easy A. You have to be a really big idiot or not know how to read to do bad in this classs. Really nice professor, helpful, gives studyguides before tests - but SO boring - most of the test is from class notes

Mr.Bergman is very helpful and patient hes also very funny and entertaining he makes the class fun and interesting.I definetley recommend his class.

tests are easy. i pretty much crammed the study guides in right before each exam and i got B's on all my tests. there are 3 mandatory concert reports that you have to do, but they are easy.lots of note taking but otherwise, pretty easy class. TAKE HIM. hes super nice and throws in a couple corny jokes here and there.

Not an easy A, but he is extremely helpful and provides study guides. Makes class interesting for non-music majors. Grade is based on: 5 quizzes, final, 1 (3) page concert report and 1 (5) page report, and weekly study guides that count as homework. One of the best teachers at SMC!

i have to say his class went by quick. he's a funny man, passionate and well knowledgeable is his field. after taking his class most will feel like they enjoy a type of music listen to in class, their are 2 concert reports and 6, gives you a review sheet before tests if you memorize them (music also) then you should get an A,lots of memorizing tho

Awesome teacher who made a potential boring subject interesting, funny and a blast to learn about. Use his study guides and you will get an A on the test. Follow directions for the concert reports and you should do well also. The best teacher I ever had at SMC!

Extremely funny and helpful. He told you what was going to happen in class. Never any surprises. If you studied the study guide, you would get an A in the class. Also mandatory to see three classical concerts.

His class was incredibly easy. he's a funny teacher. I took his class during the summer. All i had to do was attend class, take notes off his power points, and fill out the study guide. Tests are easy but need to review the guides. I recommend taking the class!!!

I LOVE Prof Bergman. He is smart, knows what he's talking about, funny, chill, and makes the subject really interesting. Quizzes are easy if you do his study guide, which is totally based on his lectures (powerpoint). Highly recommended for your G.E. because the class can't get any easier.

take his class! he's passionate about the subject and keeps it interesting. be prepared to attend 3 classical concerts (don't worry, there's always free concerts happening in LA) and write papers about them. he gives out study guides for each test. as long as you use the study guides and write the papers, you can't fail.

Easy teacher. I took him for the summer and earned an A easily. There are 3 music concerts to attend and write about them and on every test he gives you a study guide. Attend lectures because some of the material will appear on the test that is only in his lectures and not in the book. Also when taking the test need to have good memorization.

Really nice & funny professor. Very helpful & fair. Class was easy but not SUPER easy mainly bc of all the memorization. Got an A. Makes a pretty boring subject seem fun. He gets that were not all music majors. Make sure to do the study guides. In the end you really end up appreciating the music even if its not your style which is all he wants (:

Class can get boring at times but he cracks jokes to keep it entertaining because he knows it can get boring too. Take his class! Easiest A ever!

THE BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER MET. He is so fun, well-prepared, clever (of course he is a professor, but for real), and really take care of students as long as they participate with good attitude. Kinda easy class but you have to study not that hard.

Ok. here's the deal. Just go to class, kickback, listen to some music, and go home. This is the easiest class Ive ever took. GOing to 3 concerts was kinda of a hassle for me but they were nevertheless entertaining too. The exams are straight from the study guide (which u can fill in from his notes). The book isnt really needed (maybe only the CDs)

I Highly Recommend Prof. Bergman's Music 32 class! It is extremely interesting, and practical if you already listen to classical music. His exams are straight forward, and the concert reports are only mildly inconvenient. Prof. Bergman has a brainy sense of humor that causes class time to fly by, and makes him very appealing in a curious way.

The best music teacher I've ever had! He's a really nice guy and he tries to make the class easy for those who are not in music major. You can revise your assignments. Attendance is not mandatory but you should go to class as it is very interesting and entertaining. Easy A class! TAKE HIM!

I don't think he is as good as people said ! At least it is not an easy A. THe test is the largest proportion of class, it do have a study guide, however it require you to have LOT OF MEMORIZATION ,memorize the term as well as the song. I don't suggest to people who doesn't have really good memorization. But a easy B tho

Nice, passionate, concise, informative. He provides study guide for every test. Fill those out in detail with textbook and ppt. You can just ask him to take pics of his ppt after class since he goes through it quickly. I haven't missed a single point on all tests. Go to concerts early. Get it out of the way from the start. He is easy on reports.

Bergman is very knowledgeable about the subject. His class isn't too difficult. Make sure you get the textbook and pay attention in class. Take notes on what he says not just on what are on the slides. I only focused on the slides and didn't do as well on the exams/tests. He welcomes questions and will help you the best that he can.

He also creates study guides for the tests that allows you to hone in on what to focus on at home. you'll enjoy listening to music from different eras as well as acquiring a more sophisticated view of the art & music world both past & present

Very passionate professor. Tests (6) aren't really hard and are book-based (key-terms/music listening), but you have to study a bit (2-3hrs) You also have to do about 3 Concert Reports, which can be a pain if you wait until the last minute, so try to get them done early. Overall, it's an easy class, but you learn a lot.

I took his online class. I liked the first half of it. It got more difficult as the weeks went by. Lots and lots of tests. I enjoyed it and actually learned a lot about music. He doesn't respond to emails at all. Ok grading on assignments, but the assignment were confusing. Overall not a bad class and I would take it again.

I took his online 32 class. Good teacher, responded to all of my emails throughout the course in a matter of hours. a LOT of tests, thankfully MOST of them are online (don't take that for granted). Tough grader on assignments, I got a B on almost every one. Mandatory concert performance and long review at the end, but I got an A.

no book used, so if u r taking it in class make sure you go to class bc he gives definitions on the powerpoint but even if you miss class he lets you go through his ppt & take pix of what u missed. talks about his musical life but he's funny. there was a quiz every week but as long as u memorize the things in italics on the ppt u'll pass

Professor Bergman is a pretty good teacher to take for Music 1. I took his class during the summer semester and it went pretty smooth. The material is not hard to understand. It's just a lot of memorizing of where certain music notes go and memorizing sequences and intervals. You do need to study for the exams b/c that determines your grade.

Professor Bergman's class was so great. It is an easy A if you show up and write on the study guides because the tests are exactly like it. The papers are not hard, but its best to get them over with, so you dont have to worry about them. overall a great class and is good to have to balance a difficult schedule. highly recommend! :)

I have never been a musical type of guy, needed this class to fulfill 2 separate requirements. I felt like I was studying several times what others who play instruments were doing and I struggled. Professor Bergman saw I was putting in hard work and gave me every chance to succeed. If you want a great professor who is very clear take him!

I loved Professor Bergman's class. I recommend taking his class even for people like me who don't have any musical knowledge, I learned a lot and have a new appreciation for music.

Bergman makes sure everyone understands the material in the most fun and effective way. We'd do lots of physical activities where everyone participates which really helps you understand the fundamentals of music in a real way, rather than just on paper. He is playful, and makes sure everyone participates and doesn't fall under the radar. Fun class.

Professor Bergman is a great teacher with a great sense of humor. His lectures are mainly on discussing the music he tells you to listen to in the playlists he sends. The work is 2 Concert Reports (Start on it as soon as he gives them PLEASE!! ), a few assignments, and show your face in class for attendance. He knows what he's talking about. :)

Don't listen to what bad students have written about him. Bergman's expansive knowledge and inspirational dedication to his craft are truly awe-inspiring. It is quite evident that he is a Juilliard grad; his lectures a joy to observe and learn from. Add to that his kind and generous personality and you come pretty close to the perfect professor. A+

I took this course over the spring semester and it was online over zoom which was mandatory. The lectures feel kind of long but he provides the lecture slides in case you missed anything. You get 5-6 exams but he does provide study guides which are actually helpful. I actually found the material investing and learned to appreciate music.

Study guides are good & info is found on slides of lectures posted. Have to study can't just skip thru w base knowledge, listening sections you have to put time into. lectures aren't bad to sit thru. Personable guy, my group had fun. had a hard time at end & he's great giving me grace on assignments bc I participated and kept up w work.

Professor Bergman is wonderful! I miss being in his class! His lectures are great, especially with his wonderful sense of humor! The quizzes and papers were extremely easy! I learned alot about the history of music from a European standpoint, and I don't regret taking this class, one bit! He loves composer 'Steve Reich', so look him up beforehand.

Highly recommend if you need this class for IGETC. Just do your part and you will get a good grade. His class is easy, just pay attention and put in the effort. Professor Bergman made a class I was dreading really interesting and enjoyable. I have learned to love some new music I never thought I would be into prior to taking this course.

Concert Reports are tons of work but directions are clear. had a bad experience with him taking several points off of my exam and he accused me of cheating when I left the exam to ask him a question on the Zoom chat. When I brought this to his attention and showed my message in the chat rec. he was dismissive and didn't give my points back. Ez tho

If you show up to class you get what you give. Class isn't too hard if you just follow instructions and submit assignments on time. Study guides makes the test easy, discussion questions are annoying but fun if you make it, and concert reports aren't the worst. Overall pretty enjoyable if you convince yourself.

You have to pay attention to get a good grade in his class. STUDY. During tests he has songs that we have to know the name of and the composer, it's multiple choice. Do the study guides and you'll be good and the discussions, don't miss out, DONOT PROCRASTINATE, he closes everything the day of, he does not hesitate! The lectures are not as boring.

Great professor! Understanding and funny. If you are taking the zoom class please have your camera on! Utilize quizlet to prep for tests. You will have to write, but it isn't hard and he will provide clear guidelines for you. Wish I could take another one of his classes! Was an enjoyable experience 👍

Jim Bergman is a genuinely caring and funny professor. The material he teaches is extremely interesting and he puts in the effort to make it as engaging as possible. If you pay attention and do every assignment you will receive a good grade. The study guides are required and they do help greatly in strengthening your knowledge for his exams.

Took M32 last sem and worked with him this semester (had an incomplete due to medical issues). The class is based on study guides, unit tests, concert reports, smaller assignments, and a final exam. JB has been an EXTREMELY accommodating and caring teacher, and truly cares about his students and their wellbeing. He values participation in any way.
