Professor Brau was a great professor! I would recommend going to class in order to do well on the midterms. His tests are hard and you do have to study a lot for them. One thing that I really liked about his class is that he gives amazing spiritual thoughts in class! Overall he is a good professor, finance 201 is just a harder class.
Professor Brau is a great teacher who is focused on the real world application. Always has a professional development and spiritual thought during lectures. The class is very test heavy with the 95% of our grade coming from midterms and the final. Coming to class prepared every time will make a big differences when it comes to exams.
He was by far the most spiritually influential professor I have had at BYU. Great guy, but his class is tough. I wouldn't say it is as hard as ECON 110, but it is close. Make sure you put a lot of effort in. There are several things I would change about how he does things but whatever I'm done.
Professor Brau is a great guy, he is passionate about the gospel and finance, which he makes very apparent in his lectures. The notes are your lifeline, so make sure you memorize and understand them. Make sure to do a lot of studying on your own and although it is a lot, it is good with stretching yourself, and utilize friends. Good guy though.
Professor Brau is so awesome! His lectures actually keep you entertained and he has so much energy. The only thing I would change is the way he sets up the course. 95% of your grade consists of tests so it is extremely test heavy.
Professor Brau's class is hard, get ready to study and work hard. He gives you the information you need to suceed, but it does require a lot of work on your end to use it. He gives amazing spiritual thoughts each class. It is very test heavy and the tests are hard. Get ready to work. He is a great guy and genuinely cares about his students.
Brau is arguably the best professor I have had at BYU. He is a finance wizard and is clearly a talented, experienced teacher. He taught lots of spiritual lessons in the class and always tells students to reach out if they are struggling. 10/10 man.
Professor Brau is an awesome person and professor! He tells the best stories and gives amazing professional advice. His class is super fast paced but all the material is guaranteed to prepare you for the real world and for internships and jobs. Great class to take to prepare you for your major and your life.
Brau was a great professor but his class is very difficult. He gives an amazing spiritual thought each class and his lectures are very entertaining. 95% of your grade comes from test scores but he prepares you for them by teaching you exactly what you need to know for them but you have to work hard on your end in order to succeed in this class.
Brau is a fireball of energy, and very entertaining. TBH towards the end of the semester I felt like the readings were more valuable than his lectures and I fell asleep nearly every class, and my grade didn't drop To his credit, I feel like I've got the course material locked down, but I think that's from course difficulty and not Brau's teaching.
Professor Brau is a great professor but his class is HARD. 95% of the grade is tests. His lectures are super energetic and entertaining and his gives amazing spiritual thoughts. Get ready to work hard if you take Brau.
Professor Bray is awesome! His lectures are inspiring to me and keeps me engage all of the time. His exams can be tough, but he is preparing you for the real world of Finance! He is very passionate about Finance, but also takes times in his lectures to give a spiritual thought and give professional career advice. His exams tend to be lecture heavy.
Great guy! 95% of your grade is tests. Not complex, but a lot of material.
His lectures are fast if you're not already familiar with the content, so read the textbook before class. If you do that, you won't hardly need to study for the exams because lectures will solidify it for you. If you're not going to read the textbook before class, then I'd say don't go to class and just cram the day of the test.
Bro. Brau has tough tests. Your entire grade is the test. To quote him "even if you spend 6 hours studying before my tests you wont do well" and its true you have to do the readings and go to every class if you aren't good at math. Overall one of the most applicable classes I've ever taken to the real world. If you want to master finance take him.
Brother Brau is by far one of the greatest professors you can have! He has a very great heart and he wants what is best for you! I took FIN 201 from him and the class was tough, but if you know the notes and the in-class problems you will pass all of his tests. It's a hard class but Brother Brau is the man to take it from!
Professor Brau is a great guy. He gives great spiritual thoughts every class period and does his very best to connect the material to the real world. 95% of your grade is based on tests however and many things on the test are just things that he would say during the lecture so get ready to take good notes and read the textbook thoroughly.
Brother Brau is a great professor and is very understanding of students' needs. His class is difficult, but that is because Finance 201 is a firehose of information in and of itself. Brother Brau is energetic, which made the heavy lectures actually bearable and even enjoyable. Everything on tests are in his notes and in the online textbook quizzes.
Brother Brau is an amazing teacher and at the end of the class I really feel like I could ask him about anything. He teaches well and his lectures are good they are just fast. If you do the readings before hand that is better but its hard sometimes to fit it in. To sum it all up, Good teacher, Hard class, Worth it.
Brau knows his stuff, but expects his students to do a lot of the legwork, with a lot of reading, note-taking, and doing practice exams. His lectures are mostly restatements of what's in the textbook, and are very fast-paced. Additionally, help is almost only offered through TA's; even if you reach out to him, he will generally refer you to them.
Brau is a very good teacher and definitely know his stuff, but this class is very hard. 4 Midterms plus a final, there are a lot of tests and the class moves pretty fast. If you don't do the reading or prepare before lectures, then it will be a lot harder to retain the information that is presented in class.
Brau is the best, I loved his class. The tests were 100% based off of what we talked about in class, with no trick questions. It was extremely straightforward, and as long as you studied a decent amount before the test, it was easy to get an A. He's super high energy and made it really easy to listen during his lectures.
Attendance isn't required, but you will do worse on the tests if you don't attend since he includes questions from things he said in class. He is an engaging professor definitely, and his personality is fun.
The class is a fire hose of information. Brau is a character, nice guy but I didn't feel as if I got much out of class. I just did my best to get down the notes and then I felt as if I had to self teach a good chunk of it. His drill problems and notes are super clutch for the exams.
Brother Brau is amazing!! He is very clear about how he will do grades throughout the semester and he stays consistent. Attendance is not mandatory but you need the class notes to succeed. Midterms take up 75% of your grade and a good majority of the questions deal with things talked about specifically in class. He is very down to earth!
Great professor, difficult class but he gives you everything you need to prepare for the exams. Stay on top of readings/notes and study plenty before tests.
Bro Brau is amazing at keeping the class engaged and genuinely cares about our success. I feel like lots of the time I was so focused on copying his notes down that I wasn't able to learn as much as I wanted to from the lectures. Reading the chapter ahead of time and doing the practice problems helps with that for the most part though.
The guy is kinda crazy and has a terrible method for his tests, he doesn't let you ever see what you get wrong on your tests so you can't learn what you missed, which makes things impossible for the final which is also worth so much of your grade, so not great at actually teaching for the purpose of long time learning. Cram for easy A though.
Professor Brau is incredible. Each class you take time to do a spiritual thought and professional development. Professor Brau structures his class so you have to truly learn the material and not just memorize it. He really does try to prepare you for a career. Note: Your grade in the class is based almost entirely on the 4 midterms and final.
Professor Brau is super funny and I was always entertained in his class. That being said, it is probably the hardest class I've taken at BYU and I didn't do well with his teaching style. His note taking method was hard for me to follow and I struggled on the exams. He is a great guy but I'm just not a good fit for his teaching style.
Professor Brau gives inspiring lectures and is a great person. I haven't ever met a teacher that cares so deeply about his students. His class makes sure you truly understand what is being taught so you are ready for the real world. Note: Your grade in the class is based almost entirely on 4 midterms and a final.
I really enjoyed this class from Brau. He is absolutely hilarious but very clearly shows how much he cares for the students. He did amazing spiritual thoughts every class period and also had career development moments every class. If you study the way he says to, you will do great! It is a time consuming class as far as preparation for class.
Don't take Brau. His lectures are very confusing. The only way to succeed in the class is to teach the material to yourself.
Professor Brau is passionate about finance and his students. His lectures are entertaining but fast-moving, if you have not read the textbook and done the practice problems beforehand you will get lost. Attendance is not mandatory but if you will don't attend you will likely miss some "easter egg" type questions on the tests.
Brau teaches in a way that keeps me awake and fairly focused the entire 75 minute lecture. Overall he's a nice guy with some quirks. There's a lot of information, but if you study hard for the tests you'll be fine.
Professor Brau cares about his students. His lectures are awesome and his spiritual thoughts are amazing. However, this class is HARD. If you want to pass, make sure that you teach yourself the material and do practice problems BEFORE you go to lecture or else the lectures will feel like a different language. Good luck!
Brother Brau is an excellent professor. I was never bored during lectures. Although his main focus is on teaching students to be ready for the business world in regards to finance, he structures his class in such a way where if you just study the notes, you should easily get an A on the tests while still understanding the material.
Pay attention in the lectures and it is a doable class.
Professor Brau is a great teacher. He is very caring and his spritual character is amazing. People might take him the wrong way as he is outspoken and chatty, but that is what makes his lectures engaging and fun! He means no harm and is a great person.
He lectures and writes notes on to the screen. Learning the notes is the key to success in this class, so pay attention and take good notes.
The lectures are engaging and help to explain what is in the text. Quality notes are very essential for success in the class, but the notes don't make much sense on their own. Nevertheless, it is very possible to study and do well on exams. I would take this class just for the real-life relevance of the things Brau shares.
Brau is the best! People hate on him, but he just has a very strong personality. He is SOOO caring towards his students and he is VERY transparent with how difficult the class will be and how you should get an A. Honestly not that bad of a class if you just really study the notes and prepare throughout and not just cram study. Great great guy.
During class, he goes over the content of the chapter and gives breaks to have a spiritual thought or professional development. Made for some chill time to just listen to him talk. However, when it is time to take notes, you gotta write everything he writes and says. Great guy, big personality, had lots of fun in the class.
Brau is great, I think this is your best bet for a FIN 201 professor. No BS in this class, just show up, take good notes, read the book, and you can't really go wrong. Very clear path to an A. Its not super easy but also isn't super hard. Also just a great guy all around who wants to set you on the right path in the right major.
Low key a grind, but good information that we need to know. Relates to real life.
Very energetic and you can tell he loves his Job. He is kind of all over the place and tends to go on a lot of tangents but he always brings it full circle. He always gives spiritual thoughts which I loved how he tied that into the world of business. Super test heavy so if you don't do well then it will be hard to receive an A.
I loved this class and the energy Brau brought to every single lecture. I looked forward to his spiritual thoughts every class. Great guy, Great professor.
Brother Brau is a very unique professor. His passion for finance is apparent, but his passion for the students is even more apparent. He loves the students and truly cares about our success, and really tries to make his class about the real world, but sometimes it can really be about the test haha
JIM BRAU IS THE BEST PROFESSOR YOU WILL EVER HAVE. He is VERY high-energy. He cares deeply about his students. He is deeply spiritual and gives spiritual thoughts every class period. He teaches about professional development, which is VERY useful advice if you are doing finance. Or life. I cannot express how much of an impact he's had on me.
Great Professor. He truly does care about his students. There are a lot of tests in his class but if you know your notes you will do fine.
Dr. Brau is a professor of extremes. "Difficult" professor? Yes. Hard tests? Yes. Do you have to understand ALL of the content? Yes. At the same time, Dr. Brau does all he can to prepare you. Hence, he is a professor of extremes. Extremely tough class, grading, and expectations, matched with an extremely good, dedicated, and spiritual teacher.
Professor Brau always has very engaging lectures. He goes at a very fast pace so if you don't pay attention for a little bit you'll be very lost. But if you focus and do the readings you will be set. His tests aren't super easy but he prepares you very well for them. Overall a good time.
He has very fast paced lectures so if you don't pay attention you're toast. you need to read the material, but he tells you exactly what you need to do in order to succeed. If you go to class and study the notes you will do well on all of his tests. 10/10. He also gives very good career development advice and has an insightful spiritual thought.
Prof. Brau was super interesting during class. He has a lot of energy (which can be a bit much for some but also entertaining for others) and always gives really good spiritual thoughts and professional development moments. The class is test heavy but not too bad, only problem is he is a bit fast for some but generally explains everything well.
Brother Brau is an absolutely amazing teacher. He has the most amazing spiritual thoughts and truly cares about us as students. With that being said, you definitely need to spend the appropriate time on this class. If you do then you will succeed, otherwise you will absolutely crash and burn. There are no if and's or buts.
Brau is a very dedicated and tough professor. He is direct and obvious about what to expect on his exams, so you know exactly what to study. He is a very energetic professor, his lectures are always engaging. That being said, his exams are very difficult and the majority of your grade is 4 midterms and a final.
Great Professor. Very engaging and makes class interesting. Almost all of your grade is tests. Study hard for the tests and you'll do fine.
VERY passionate teacher, will keep you awake in the lectures. He is no nonsense but if you do what he says, you will get a good grade. Very straight foreward, no BS.
I absolutely loved Brother Brau's lectures. He's enthusiastic, passionate, and his lectures are always exciting and entertaining. That being said, the class is very difficult. Your grade mainly comes from exams, so set aside a lot of time to study. Exams are based on the class notes, so don't miss class. TAKE ACCOUNTING 200 FIRST!!!
His lectures are very fast paced so you need to pay attention. Thoroughly understanding the readings before class will help with that a lot. Also, exams are 95% of your grade (no exaggeration) so make sure you study!! If you take good notes in class and do the practice problems, you'll be okay. Energetic lectures though, but be ready to work hard.
Brau is an awesome professor who cares and makes his lectures entertaining. I highly advise going to class as his notes are essential for exams and the entire class is based on midterms and the final. It's difficult learning at a fast pace with many principles to learn but is very possible when prepared.
Brau is an amazing professor! He is great at focusing on timely spiritual thoughts and professional development in each lecture that are really helpful! He is super high energy and very opinionated so there is never a dull moment. The class is challenging, but for good reason... it is to prepare us! Definitely recommend taking Fin 201 from Brau!
Really great guy who teaches a pretty difficult class (Make sure to take Accounting 200 first). He goes pretty fast during lectures and make sure you take notes on the material before class. Attendance isn't mandatory and he does post his handwritten notes on LS, but they aren't anywhere as helpful if you weren't in class.
Dude knows what he is teaching. He moves quick in lectures and your grade is only based on exam scores. Shouldn't expect anything crazy from him since he has it all laid it out for you. Attendance isn't mandatory so if you don't go then make sure to look at his in class notes he posts after class. All exam material will be based off of his notes.
Take Accounting, I didn't before and had a hard time, hence my grade. 4 midterms, one dropped. Exams are 95% of grade, 5% textbook quiz. attendance not mandatory, will fail if you don't attend. read, take notes, Lectures are fast paced. Extremely tough class, grading, and expectations, but good passionate, dedicated teacher.
Professor Brau is an excellent and energetic professor. It can be a challenging class, but as long as you come to class having read beforehand and taking good notes, you'll be fine.
Brau is a great guy and a very passionate teacher. He really seems to care about his students. His tests can be tough especially if you miss class, but if you go to class and study your notes you should be fine. Your exam scores are weighted 95% of your grade. Taking the final tomorrow, though. If I do poorly then forget everything I said.
Definitely the hardest class I've taken at byu. I think harder than Accounting 310. Anything he says in class could be on the exam so make sure you are writing down every word. You need to basically memorize all notes taken and know how to solve the practice problems super well. I loved his spiritual thoughts and he prayed for us which touched me.
Super amazing class, would take again. Do not take if English is your second language. He talks super fast and the tests are lecture heavy
Brau really prepares you for real life with his curriculum. He keeps you engaged during lectures. Tests were not easy and you need to know everything single thing on the notes to get an A on the test.
This was a great class. It is hard, but I really learned and understood everything when I put the work in.
Brau is a very engaging and fun professor. You can tell he loves what he does. The exams are straight off the class notes, so as long as you are on top of those and are willing to study them well you will be successful.
Dr. Brau is a very entertaining professor. He's good at preparing you for the real world and shares a spiritual thought every day. You just have to take what he says with a grain of salt--he exaggerates everything. I felt like the tests weren't as hard as everyone says if you just study class notes and do practice problems.
Brau is really great! He knows his stuff and teaches in an entertaining way. He is good at focusing on what actually matters and teaching terms that are used in real life. Sometimes, though, there are some unfair (in my opinion anyway) questions on the test that come from offhand comments in class. You have to pay attention to EVERYTHING he says.
Brau knows what he is talking about and each lecture is full of a lot of information. He is a fast talker and very loud. The grades are based on what you get on the exams which are difficult. He gives good spiritual thoughts in class but the lessons he teaches aren't always easy to follow.
Brau is a very entertaining teacher. He is easy to listen to in classes and has a lot of great lessons. However This class is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. A lot of intuition is needed to do well on exams and if you don't understand the why behind everything you're cooked. A lot of learning on your own is also needed.
This class is great and straightfoward. Just memorize or master every single thing he goes over in class and you'll get an A! (Tests are almost solely based on class discussion/notes)
Brau is a very passionate guy that gives very high paced lectures. You're graded on four midterms (lowest gets dropped), a final (20%), and 14 quizzes (only 5% of grade). EVERYTHING on the tests come from the notes but there are lots of notes and he writes fast. Great professor but difficult class.
This class was a mix of great and difficult! Haha, he is the most loving guy and he cares about his students and wants them to learn the content. However, it is a tough class. It is almost completely graded by the tests and you need to pay close attention in class to do well. If you haven't taken ACC 200 it will be hard you can do it though.
Content-wise, Professor Brau is a great teacher. He provides great test-prep resources as well. However, his lectures are 50% stuff you need to be in class to hear and 50% him rambling about irrelevant and random things. He makes up the time by going extremely fast through difficult topics. Don't take if you don't want your time wasted.
Brau is such a great professor with genuine concern for his students. NOTES! are everything and it's very important to go to class to have the notes that you need for the exams. He is hilarious and the lectures are very entertaining although finance itself is very difficult. The tests are very hard and taking them is very humbling so study is key!
Jim Brau's classes were some of the most entertaining hours of my week. I didn't take much financial knowledge from his teaching because of how fast and unorganized his notes and presentation of material can be, but when I read the textbook before class at least I knew what was going on. It's a tough class no matter who teaches, but Brau is awesome
I really liked him as a person, and I loved his stories. He really knows his stuff, but your grade is 95% based on your exams and it's tough. I spent so long studying and am doing so mid in his class. He keeps you awake in lectures though.
Professor Brau was very energetic and had great tactics to ensure that content was learned permanently, not just for the class. This did mean the class was difficult: 95% tests, 5% quizzes (20% final). Notes from lecture provide everything on the exams, but sometimes it was difficult to remember everything (some questions seemed random from notes).
Engaging lectures but the notes are super confusing to understand and look back on. You are tested on what's in the notes/ lectures so don't waste your time studying the textbook. Tests can be confusing though and different than the practice problems worked in class.
He will scare you into dropping the class if you aren't ready the first day. Don't drop! It's not as hard as he says. The trick to get an A, which I only figured out halfway through the course, is to STUDY THE NOTES. Brau will say this. What he doesn't say, but will help a lot, is to grind out all the practice problems for each topic. Guaranteed A
I love Brother Brau. An amazing, faith-filled example that I admire. He is highly intellectual, but I feel that there was little learning in lectures and a whole lot of fast-paced review of reading. Requires a lot of reading and effort to understand the material
Professor Brau is an amazing and passionate guy about finance, stocks, weightlifting and the Gospel. You need to take meticulous notes in his classes as his tests (95% of your grade) come directly from them. I would recommend reading the textbook before class as he moves fast in his lectures. Stay on top of your notes and you will ace his class!
In Professor Brau's class, you get out what you're willing to put in (at least in FIN 201). When I took it, 95% of the final grade was based off of exams, and 95% of the exams was based off of what was said in the lectures. If you're willing to pay close attention in class and go over the notes, you'll learn the material.
Brother Brau is a good guy with a great heart. However, I personally didn't like the layout of the class. The order in which the material is presented didn't help me understand the big picture of what we were learning, which I think is essential to success in this class. The exams are hard, but everything he tests on, he talks about in lecture.
Bro Brau is great. His course is rogan
Professor Brau is a super cool guy and he is great at teaching. The class was pretty hard for me and it sucks we can't have formulas for the tests. But he is very clear about that and the fact that class notes are extremely important.
This class is super test heavy and yup, 95% of them are based on what the man himself says in his lectures. If you take good notes and are fine at learning from the textbook, then you're gonna be fine. You've got this!
Professor Beau expects student to learn the material outside of class. If this flipped model doesn't work for you DO NOT TAKE. In addition, only 5 percent of the class grade is quizzes, the rest is the 4 tests and the midterm.
Bro Brau is very energetic. Be prepared to be focused and taking notes through all lectures. You get out what you put in. He always shares amazing spiritual thoughts in class. Expected to read material before each lecture and study a bunch outside of class. But overall, a good class. If you have the the time to put in, I'd recommend this class.
Brau is a great person, love him, but his class is very hard. Class is strictly lecture and text book. You have to memorize your class notes for the tests.
Very test heavy. I loved his spiritual thoughts. Didn't love his teaching style. Hard for him to admit he is wrong. I would take his class again.
Very inspiring and kind. You have to do the reading to survive
Bro B is a great professor who keeps the lectures upbeat and entertaining. You need to go to class in order to understand the material and reading the textbook before will only help you succeed even more. Take good notes and study them often or else this class will be extra difficult. Just take the time and do the work and Fin 201 is not that bad.
Love Brau as a professor and person. Love the energy. Use MyEducator to study before and after lectures. Read everything, do the practice problems after each section and you'll do great.
Professor Brau is an amazing teacher. He is very enthusiastic which makes it easier to learn the concepts. Also, I loved hearing his spiritual thoughts each class period. I highly recommend taking this class from him.
Good guy, just talks too much about things that aren't necessary to the class itself. Lots of professional development and spiritual thoughts which are good, but has too many tangents that take away from actually learning in class. These tangents lead to little to no time for the practice problems given at the end of class.
He is a good professor but your whole grade is based on your test scores. He does drop one midterm though which is really helpful. But if you memorize the class notes word for word you will do fine on the tests.
Teaches at a very fast pace that will be difficult to track if you don't do the assigned readings before class. Learned that the hard way. Do the readings ahead of class. Gives uplifting spiritual thoughts and lots of professional advice that are majorly beneficial to anyone studying anything in business. Awesome person.
If you don't have a strong background in accounting this class will wreck you. There is a lot to know for each exam and if you don't know your stuff you will not do well. You also cannot go back and review your tests. I did not like this because I felt like I cannot go back and learn from my mistakes. This class did not suit my type of learning.
Brau is a fearmonger. He scares kids with stories of how brutal the job market is. He also makes class way more intense than it needs to be. The lectures are OK, but I stopped going because he was slow paced, mostly reiterating textbook information, and constantly plugging his LinkedIn profile. He posts class notes, so study those.
Super awesome professor. Challenging and majority of your grade comes from exams. His lectures are fun because he brings energy.
He is a super genuine person and wants you to learn but his teaching style is very hard for some. I had a hard time learning the way he teaches. I always did the readings before class but he still doesn't explain the material good. Extremely test heavy class. I would lowkey look for a different teacher.
I learned to really enjoy this class over the course of the semester, but it took time. I would highly recommend taking accounting before this class, otherwise the first few weeks will be brutal. Do the readings before class and keep pace with his notes in class to do well. Brau is an awesome professor though and I really enjoyed every lecture.
Proffessor Brau is an amazing man. He has a lot of experience in the outside world, his lectures are very inspiring and spiritual. The only thing I did not like about this class is how test heavy it was. 5% of your grade is from the textbook quizzes and the rest is off of the tests. Be sure you understand this before you decide to take his class.
He's a great person with amazing spiritual thoughts but aside from that, not a good professor. He tries to scare everyone away from finance, makes tests nitpicky instead of testing what's important His goal is to intimidate. Taught towards finance bros. Side note: the TAs aren't at all helpful, and almost seem to avoid helping until you beg.
Brau is a great guy, but I don't think he actually enjoys teaching. He expects you to master the material before class, which would be fine but the textbook isn't the easiest to follow. I probably learned 5% of the material actually from Brau and worked my butt off to teach myself the rest. This class definitely caused me a lot of unneeded stress.
This professor is very caring and it is very apparent when he does his devotionals and interactions.
Honestly, he's an awesome professor, Finance just isn't my thing so I had a hard time staying focused and engaged.
Don't take this class unless you've taken accounting before... The only thing you're graded on is tests but he goes over everything in the lectures, you just have to be able to keep up with him. Honestly did not like his class at all in the beginning but once you get used to his teaching style, it gets better. Hardest class I've ever taken.
Legend. Class is exam heavy, just go to class and he tells you what is on the exam.
Great teacher! Amazing spiritual thoughts and really cares about your learning. This is a class that you cannot mess around in. You either know the content or you don't.
Brau is a baller. Will make you laugh. He doesn't take attendance but he teaches you everything that is going to be on the tests in class. The way to succeed is by reading before the class, taking notes in class, and reviewing notes after class. The grade is dependent on how well you test. Even though it was hard still the most efficient professor.
Great teacher! Great spiritual thoughts. Lots of reading and learning on your own.
The professor made lectures super engaging and was great at breaking down difficult concepts. His tests are more difficult as you are not allowed to use formula sheets but he is a great teacher and prepares you from the class notes on what to expect during tests.
It's a shame that RMP has a character limit. Dr. Brau is far and away the least professional professor I've had during my years at BYU. The material is not very difficult, but Dr. Brau's teaching and examples make what would be basic info needlessly complicated. His spiritual thoughts are inspiring when he focuses on doctrine & not his own opinions
Jim Brau is a pretty good teacher and he obviously cares about the success of his students, even outside the class. Your grades come almost entirely from exams so you have to do really well on them. He does provide a lot of review materials for good test prep though so I felt prepared going into the exams.
Brau is a great guy who is passionate but if you want a better grade in fin201 you should defiantly take it from another professor. The exams are hard and they are 95% of your grade. I've taken every business pre-req including acc310, Econ110, IS201, and more but this class is easily the hardest.
Brau is one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves to teach and is hilarious. His tests can be pretty hard though because of how much new material there is, but it is enjoyable at least for me. He is always avaliable and wants us to do well. Also he has some of the best spiritual thoughts.
He goes super fast in lectures, so it's crucial to have already read and learned the material before class. He's not great at explaining difficult concepts so I learned most of the material from the book. It's ridiculous how he doesn't show you the questions that you get correct on your tests. How else are you supposed to learn from your mistakes??
Jim Brau is one of the best teachers. He has incredible spiritual thoughts and has so much passion for the subject. His test are hard, but they challenge you and help you grow!
Professor Brau taught a class that was very difficult for an entry level course, but did ultimately expand my knowledge on the subject. The only real grades you will have are tests, but one is dropped. Some of the questions are ultra specific, but it is very possible to get good grades on the exam.
This dude is lowkey kinda crazy. I'm only doing this because he said we could get extra credit but I'm pretty sure he'll just curve it out of everyone's grades. He is all over the place and according to him it's never his fault. Would not recommend.
Great professor. Keeps class very interesting. Obviously knows how to teach the content very well. His spiritual thoughts during class are also very interesting and awesome.
brau is the best professor to take finance from! he truly cares about his students and provides everything you need to succeed in this class.
You WILL be spiritually strengthened at the end of this class. Bro. Brau doesn't only teach you the foundations of finance but teaches you how to be a disciple of Christ. That's a lesson I'll never forget.
This is a great class for you if you're a good test taker and disciplined enough to study without homework. A few keys to success: 1. Study the textbook before class if you want to understand lecture 2. Focus conceptual test prep on notes from lecture, not textbook 3. Split math test prep between lecture examples and chapter drill problems
Not a fan of this class. Brau is a cool guy with good stories but not the best teacher. His lectures go super fast and your just trying to write everything down to keep up(which he tells you to do) rather than actually learning from him. Had to figure it out on my own. Textbook not helpful. Can't see what you missed on test. Very hard class.
I love Brother Brau's spiritual thoughts and desire to help all of us. The class was hard and to be succesful you have to know your stuff and prepare very adequately. If you don't understand the notes and how to do the examples from class, you won't succeed. General skills from accouting 200 are extremely vital as well.
Tests are 95% of your grade, but there are some helpful caveats. 1. There aren't any projects 2. One of the midterms is dropped if you take surveys 3. If you do better on the final than your overall grade, that becomes your grade 4. The grading scale is lowered to 91% for an A. His lectures are great, practical info that is what's on the exams.
Brau is good. Here's the deal, you have to put in a lot of time independent of lectures to learn the material. Prepare for 2-3 hours per chapter learning the material outside of learning. You'll want to do this before you go to the lecture on the topic. DO NOT get sick to the point of missing class... you will hate your life in this class.
Take him seriously at the beginning of the semester and know the notes for tests. I didn't realize that meant that the majority of the test questions are taken straight from the notes. If you know those and can do the practice problems your ready to go. Also you can't look at your previous tests, which is the only reason I gave him 4.
Amazing professor I would 100% take again. Great at organizing class with professional development and spiritual thoughts so you can have small but meaningful brain breaks. A genuinely great guy who cares a lot about his students. His tests are very hard but if you study the notes you'll be ok.
Make Sure you know your notes
95% tests. Grewat teacher. Great class. Very hard
Honestly, it was a privilege to be taught by Professor Brau. He and his lectures are a privilege to attend, they increased my faith in Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father. He teaches for financial mastery and the real world, not for a test, which is why the tests are challenging. Make sure to do your chapter readings before class, and go to TA's.
Brau is a great guy who teaches with passion and the spirit. I really enjoyed his class and his spiritual thoughts. However, this class is insanely hard. The material is fairly easier to master but his tests are disproportionately hard to the material taught in class.
Loved Dr. Brau, but his teaching style just wasn't really for me. The textbook also was not helpful and we had to use it for reading quizzes, which were nothing like the exams. Be prepared to need to teach yourself a lot of stuff outside of class. Brau gives the best spiritual thoughts though and had great professional development advice.
Professor Brau knows a lot about finance but isn't great at teaching it to students who are new to the material. Even when I did the reading beforehand, I would often leave class feeling more confused than before. This class is almost completely graded based off of tests. If you like me aren't a great test taker, I wouldn't recommend this class.
I'm so glad I took FIN 201 from Brau, he inspires me so much and really makes it easy to focus on learning for the real world, not just for the tests. Amazing spiritual thoughts that really got me thinking. Super tender heart but puts the pressure on you to be the best you can be at the same time.
Brau is a great person and cares about all his students. The class is hard though. Class is important to go to because he walks you through what is on the test, but I often left class feeling more confused even though I had done the readings. His teaching style was hard for me to follow but overall he is a great guy and teaches a good class.
Professor Brau is a great guy and I really enjoyed his lectures. He also gave amazing spiritual thoughts. However, I don't like his teaching style. To do well in his class you need to memorize his notes. You will have to do lots of learning on your own and with the TAs.
Good professor
Great guy and super smart. It's a tough class though, 95% of the grade is based on tests that are really hard compared to the material being learned.
Brau is a very engaging professor and will you pretty much all the answers to the test in class if you pay attention to everything. The tests can be pretty difficult because it's a quick turnaround between each of them.
Impossible to follow along with whether you read before class or not. spends half the lectures sidetracked and has no review sessions. The only grades are midterms basically, so study hard. If you do good on the final it replaces everything. Terrible outline for the class.
You will never fall asleep in Brau's classes. Go to class and the TA lab. Study your notes super hard!!
Super good teacher and the best part is the spiritual part of each lecture.
Professor Brau is a great guy. He cares a lot, and although I didn't love the way his course was structured he was clear about his expectations and how to succeed. Good class
Professor Brau is a dynamic lecturer. His class consists mostly of him writing down notes for you to copy exactly. The notes literally contain 90% of the answers on the exams, so you need to be there. He is a very fast lecturer, so be prepared to learn content out of class if you don't catch it in class.
take good notes study notes show up to lecture
This class is an absolute marathon at a sprint pace. Bro Brau is a great guy and does a fantastic job making his lectures a pleasure to attend. Be ready for a no-huddle type of class, material moves quickly and requires you to really put the work in at home. His tests are manageable if you study his way. All-in-all would take it again if I had to.
I had a very hard time in this class. The sturcture of it was not intuitive for me and I found that it got out of hand very quickly. Not being able to access tests after taking them was very demoralizing. If you aren't feeling sure about the structure of his class, I would say don't do it. The amount of content was overwhelming.
Brau was a great professor. He has a lot of energy and is very passionate about everything. It was a tough class but overall good.
Jim Brau embodies the aims of BYU. He is engaging and uplifting. Although he does say "freak" like a million times, we still love him. I felt spiritually, intellectually, mentally, and emotionally uplifted. This was a challenging course, and I am glad it is over, but I would take this class again and any class with Brother Brau if I had the chance.
This class was very fast-paced and requires you to put in a lot of work/study on your own time. The lectures were engaging and enjoyable, but I would highly recommend you read the chapters before you go to class! I also loved his spiritual and professional development thoughts.
Professor Brau focuses a lot on preparing you for the exams. The grades in the class are mainly from the exams. He is very clear about what he teaches. He creates very informative notes that are very helpful when preparing for his exams. He often shares great stories and inspirational messages. All in all, a great professor.
Dr. Brau is an energetic, caring professor. His energy might be too much for some people, but for me it kept me awake and attentive. The class is based 95% off tests. Take good notes along with reading the textbook and you'll be fine, he gives everything you need. I felt that he often rushed through topics and example problems on purpose.
This class was extremely test heavy. Not a ton of homework but it helps to understand the material before class or lectures can be really confusing. Attendance is not mandatory but necessary to get a good grade on the exams. Professor Brau is very passionate and he provides good resources and problems to practice.
Very funny and very great teacher of Finance. Grade is heavily weighted on tests, and his tests aren't hard if you study the way he says to. All the questions come from the notes in class. His class was my favorite so far!
Brau is hilarious, but you need to know how his class is structured to get an A. Listen to what he tells you to study. Know the notes by heart, do the readings, and do all the drill problems and practice exams, and you'll be fine. Most practice isn't graded, so it's on you to prepare for the test.
Professor Brau is a great teacher and cares about preparing his students for the real world. He gives great spiritual thoughts and professional development movements. Your grade is entirely based on tests which come directly from his notes in class. Make sure you attend class and go to the TA labs for help.
Professor Brau checks all the boxes. I have never had a professor who has successfully been able to be spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, character building, and has lead me to lifelong learning and service. Professor Brau hits the aims of a BYU education like no one else! However beware! This class requires a lot of work!
Great
Great guy, one of the best at BYU. Grading scale was steep but glad I met bro Brau.
Brau was an awesome Professor. He is very very fast paced but he really wants everyone to learn. No phones or computers allowed, notes are only taken by hand on paper. It might seem odd at first but his teaching style is useful for helping you learn a lot of material fast. Hard class but one of the best, most applicable classes I've ever taken.
He was a great professor and I learned a lot from him. It is easy to see he cares deeply about students. However, your grade is almost exclusively based off of midterms and your final. If you aren't a great test taker or aren't ready for lectures that run through the material quickly then maybe another professor would be better for you.
Dr. Brau is a great professor. While his lecture heavy teaching style and test heavy grading system aren't for everyone, its clear that Dr. Brau is passionate about what he teaches and wants us students to succeed not only in the real world and the workplace in addition to school, but also wants to help us become lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.
Professor Brau was great! He genuinely cares about his students and the class. He always invited the Spirit into class with spiritual thoughts. I am definitely not a finance person but if you stay up on the readings & do the notes and drill problems you'll get it! He is very clear on what is going to be on the test although they were hard for me.
Professor Brau is amazing in his lectures and makes them very engaging. This class grade is solely based off of your test scores so not very much homework at all. Pay attention in class and study all of you class notes very well and you will do fine.
He has super fast-paced lectures and it is very important that you pay attention to them because what he says in class is always on the test. There are four exams plus the final, so I always felt like I was studying for a test. It's a manageable load if you consistently study. I was always entertained in the class and it was easy to pay attention.
Professor Brau is an iconic MSB professor. He is high energy and his lectures are rarely boring. That being said, he gets pretty off track and I often wished he would spend more time helping the class solidify concepts during the whole class period rather than telling so many stories. This course is self taught with some support from lectures.
Brau is a very engaging teacher and I never felt like I was going to fall asleep in his class. He does go quick over the content so you really have to pay attention and going to class helps a lot. If you do the out of class reading it will help, but you may still get confused by some things. Very big final and the exams are most of the grade.
Professor Brau is an amazing professor. However, his class is really tough. Exams are worth 95% of your grade. 4 Exams and 1 Final. He does drop 1 exam, after doing some surveys. His lectures are dense and extremely useful but really difficult to keep up. He treats the class as the reason you will get a job, will be from this class. Good but hard.
Professor Brau is absolutely amazing. Definitely one of my favorite professors. The class was definitely intense and very material heavy, but he made the lectures very quick and interesting. I don't have any interest in finance, but I never felt like I was going to fall asleep. I loved the professional development sections and spiritual thoughts.
He is a great professor and really cares for his students, it can just be hard to follow along at some points through his lectures.
You can tell he cares abt his students since he give you the opportunity to drop a midterm if you take some surveys and his spiritual thoughts are nice. This class just has so much material and memorization required you feel like your drowning in work which is a bit much for being a pre req. He also handwrites all his notes and slides.
Probably my favorite class that I have taken at BYU so far! When he says to study the notes for the test, he means it. 90% of the test questions are directly from the notes and the rest are stretch questions to make you think a little bit harder. There are 4 midterms, one of the midterms ends up getting dropped. Quizzes 5%, tests 75%, final 20%.
If you skip lectures, you're going to fail. Brau will tell you everything you need to know for his tests during his lectures, but you'll need to take thorough notes and know them like the back of your hand. The version of the class I took had four midterms and one final. This class is difficult, but I would take it from Brau again.
Only class where I'm looking at my watch to see when class ends. Super test heavy and prepares you for B's. Takes pride in an unnecessarily difficult class. Not a fan of the overall class style but everyone has their opinions. He does care deeply about his students though. Genuine guy and you can tell he worked hard to get where he's at.
Finance can be a difficult subject but Brother Brau prepares you very well for the exams and also for the final. He is a wonderful teacher but I enjoyed very much his spiritual thoughts plus it is great when we get to start each class with a prayer.
the midterms are tough and require lots of study, knowing the materials, and going to every class us useful.
I loved taking this class from Brau, his lectures were awesome and I loved how he gave a spiritual thought and life advice every class. It is a pretty hard class, most your grade is based off the tests and you have to be at every class listening to what he says because what he says could be on the exams. Definitely would recommend him though.
People say that this course is challenging, but following my sister's advice, I read the textbook and took the quizzes before attending lectures. this helped me immensely, enabling me to score 100's on almost every test. Prof. Brau is a great teacher and very engaging but if you don't study beforehand you're going to be confused and get left behind
Awesome class! Class periods are always fun and motivational. Professor Brau has great energy and I learned so much from him. Tests can be hard.
I loved his class! Professor Brau's lectures are engaging and fun. His class definitely requires thoughtful note taking and essentially writing everything down that comes out of his mouth. Other than that, his tests are almost identical to the notes, so if you take great notes, you will do great!
Favorite professor I have ever had. I always had more energy leaving his class than when I got there. He truly loves his students and prepares them spiritually and intellectually for the real world. 95% of the grade is based on exams, but if you come to class prepared and study the Brau way, you will ace this class with no issues.
This may sound a LITTLE crazy but hear me out: if you want an A, just do what Brau says to do. No shortcuts, no lazy days, no nothing. Study how he tells you to study and you'll be ballin. Thanks Jimmy
I loved Pr. Brau! His lectures are excellent! The exams are challenging, but I've learned a lot in this class.
Entertaining lectures and tests based on class notes but found it easier to just read textbook and do practice problems to study.
He was a hard teacher. Expect to study lots for every single test. At least 1 hour per day (including weekends). Grade is based mostly on tests and lectures are not helpful. Take a different finance teacher.
Great professor, but he is a bit of an acquired taste. His tests are all based on the notes so pay attention and you should do well. He prepares you and is reasonable with the test questions. He also gives good life tips and spiritual lessons during class. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking him for finance over the other professors.
Your grade is entirely determined by your test grades, so you better take good notes in class and study
It was super hard for me to understand how to get a good grade in the class at the beginning, but Professor Brau talks about how all of the test questions come from class lectures. THIS IS SO TRUE. If you go to lectures, and do the readings before class, you will do so great!
Professor Brau is very animated and loves what he does. It is obvious that he wants you to remember this material throughout your life. As long as you go to class and study from his lecture notes, you will do really well on the tests!
Incredible guy; his lectures were great about finance but amazing about life in general. Loved the class
Professor Brau is amazing and extremely caring about his students. He will do whatever it takes to help any student of his and he is very passionate about what he teaches.
Brau preaches that you need to learn most of the stuff on your own, which is very much true for this class. His lectures are 100 mph and he won't slow down for stragglers because he expects you to already know the stuff before coming to class. Brother Brau is hardcore, and takes pride in it.
good dude. class set-up isn't good for those who are not good test takers. Going to class is pointless.
He goes insanely fast in class, so good luck keeping up, but the classes are interesting and good. Textbook is good.
Jim Brau is an amazing professor. In his lectures, he always includes professional development moments and spiritual thoughts. He makes sure to keep up the energy. But he does have a very unique teaching style. Most of the class was quickly scribbling notes. The grade comes down to four midterm tests and a final, and each test is extremely hard.
Great class, just lock in.
Definitely the hardest class I've had so far (out of 4 semesters). There's a lot of material covered. He writes his notes fast and there's lots of acronyms, so if you didn't catch something the first time, you're probably not hearing it unabbreviated again. The tests are also pretty brutal. Did enjoy his stories and spiritual thoughts though!
Best class to prepare you for the real world. Will miss going to this class!
He is good, but his tests are hard and weighted heavily, so make sure to do well on those.
ONLINE VERSION - this class was easier than the in-person class (fewer chapters and no cumulative tests). Highly recommend. Each exam gets easier. Heavily curves exams (10-15%). Just needed it for bus core, but I had a good experience. No real shortcuts, a good grade takes lots of studying and memorization.
Brother Brau was a good teacher. He is by far the best one to take 201 from. Study the notes and make sure to pay attention to his lectures. The tests are tough.
Professor Brau is as genuine as they come. Great guy and he teaches this course very directly and honestly. It is a VERY DIFFICULT course if you don't go to class or do the reading/quizzes. The grade is based off of midterms and a final. IF YOU DON'T PLAN ON ATTENDING CLASS, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. YOU WILL FAIL. Learned a ton
Super great class, learned a lot but it was TOUGH. You better study hard for this class and be prepared for lectures because he moves super fast (even if you've read the book he still writes and talks super fast which makes it tough to learn)). Lectures were amazing always broke up class with spiritual thoughts and professional development.
If you are taking this as a prereq for any MSB major I urge you to schedule your entire semester around this course. Take easy GE classes. To do well you must take notes on the textbook, make Quizlets on the book notes (study these before class) and make quizlets on in class notes. This is a challenging course but was my favorite class ever.
Brau is a GREAT professor. I would take his class just for his spiritual thoughts and professional advice. He does care for his students- just look at his LinkedIn! Plan to do pre-class readings and attend the TA lab EARLY. While my grade relied solely on the final exam, I DON'T recommend it. Read the syllabus to understand course expectations.
I thought he was a great teacher and taught the material well. He goes really fast in his lectures and I missed a fair share of classes. So, I spent a lot of time out of class in the TA lab. But all in all, I think he does a great job.
Professor Brau's teaching style and class layout doesn't fit for me and my learning style. To make up for that though, he is seriously a super admirable and I can tell he is very proud of what he does. He really wants to help his students master as much material as possible during the short amount of time he has. He's got great spiritual thoughts.
I loved Jimmy Brau and this class. Brau is hilarious, energetic, admirable, and intelligent. The class material is difficult, but very, very rewarding when you get it figured out. Brau does spiritual and business development moments every class period which I found to be very insightful and helpful. He's a stud and I loved the class.
Brau is amazing! I always looked forward to his class because he was always super energetic. If you want to do well in the class, STUDY THE NOTES taken in class, know how to do the in-class practice problems, and there might be 1 or 2 stretch problems on the exam that were similar to questions on the myeducator topic quiz.
Bro Brau is a great guy who is very passionate about finance. The 95% of your grade is based on tests with 5% online homework. About 85-95% of what you need to know for the tests is given to you in lectures so its not really a lecture to snooze through (however, attendance is not graded). He is a good professor for ppl trying to get into the MSB.
I loved having Bro Brau this semester, he did an amazing job of keeping students engaged. While also providing moments of spiritual discussion. If you're going to take FIN 201, I would recommend that you take it from Bro Brau
This might end up being my favorite class I take at BYU. Brau is hands down the most entertaining teacher at BYU. He also shares really good inspirational and spiritual messages to break up the class time. The guy is hilarious with all his papers that he showcases to the class. He's excellent with real world application of the stuff we are learning
Brau is THE guy! You will learn a ton in this class but you have to put in a lot of effort. You cannot miss any days of class and tests make up 95% of your grade. He has 4 midterms but drops the lowest if you do some surveys through the semester but most importantly he is such a good teacher. His spiritual moments are awesome and is very upbeat.
Brau was an awesome professor. Loved his daily spiritual thoughts and passion for finance. Very test heavy class so make sure you study his notes and run through practice problems for the test
This class is moderately hard, but Brau makes it the best experience possible. I've done my best in this course and I can see the fruits. I had several technical interviews in finance this semester and could discuss almost every topic with clarity I even got three internship offers, including consulting and PE.
Professor Brau is hilarious, spiritually motivating, and passionate about what he does. The class has difficult material but reading the online textbook and doing the topic quizzes helps a lot to understand. You basically teach yourself everything because the lectures are just him re-writing the notes. 5 tests= whole grade- study hard.
Professor Brau was a fantastic Finance professor. His lectures were engaging and thorough. While the tests are difficult, if you put in the work you can do well in the class. I definitely recommend this class to people who are interested in finance!
Be careful to take this class. You have to be really good at taking tests. He says that the tests are just from notes but it is really important to read the textbook thoroughly. If you are not good at tests take it from a different professor. He gives great spiritual thoughts that I really loved!
You have to do the readings before class, the quiz problems, and understand the content. If you already have taken ACC 200 and ECON 110 I would compare it to that. Understand the content and prepare and it will be great. Awesome lectures.
I think Brau is the best professor for Fin 201. Everyone in the Marriott school talks about him so that one more reason to take this class with him. You are not allowed to use electronics in class to take notes which helped me take better notes and focus more. Professor Brau makes his lectures super fun.
One of the best professors I've had at BYU. He has a gift for lecturing and making finance entertaining. Very test-heavy class, you need to read before going to class to understand what's going on. The content is very useful. You learn stuff that can get you a finance internship even though it's just an entry-level finance class. 10/10 recommend.
Overall I'd say I preferred taking this class in person than I would've online. He does a good job keeping your attention in class and I really enjoyed his thoughtful spiritual thoughts.
Brau's got a big personality and his lectures are fun. You've gotta be DIALED though: tune out for 30 seconds and you'll be lost for the rest of the lecture. Prepare to study a lot for the tests: 95% of your grade is tests. No busy work, just mastering content. He only teaches this class winter semester. Highly recommend.
Brother Brau is awesome! I looked forward going to his lectures and he's very thorough and provides lots of help! Reading the book and understanding the material took the majority of the time throughout the week, but if you study well and do exactly what Brother Brau says for the tests, you will be set!
I really enjoyed Brau as a teacher. He was hilarious, and also gave so many applicable spiritual thoughts and professional development tips. His lectures are engaging, though you have to kind of go with the flow because sometimes he jumps around. If you have read the book before class you will be prepared. Be ready for tests!!
One of the best. Is passionate about what he does. Will always be willing to help. The class is hard, but its the nature of the course. Brau prepares you well for the tests if you put in the work. Read before class and take good notes. I appreciated Brau's spiritual thoughts in every class.
Brother Brau has been one of my favorite professors so far at BYU! He keeps the class engaged. He writes handwritten notes for the class during class, so you know what to study for tests. His spiritual thoughts are better than my religion class. If you want the A: attend lectures & take good notes. If you're studying finance, take FIN 201 from Brau
FIN 201 is a hard class, requiring you to study and know the textbook material BEFORE you come to class. In the lectures, Brau reviews the textbook material. He also include highly valuable professional development moments and great spiritual thoughts every class.
Brother Brau is a fantastic professor. He'll help you understand the real world and things as they really are. I appreciate him as a human a lot. He is super cool and gives very engaging lectures, tons of energy, and jumps around from subject to subject very quickly. His spiritual thoughts are so amazing! often times the reason I made it to class.
Professor Brau is a great professor. I really enjoyed his class and he was inspiring. It will be one of the few classes that I remember from BYU. He is test heavy, but I prefer that so it was good. If you want to learn - take his class. He'll push you to really learn the material
He's an interesting professor, gets off topic really easily but does a good job of keeping everyone engaged. study your notes and do the PRACTICE EXAMS & DRILL PROBLEMS & you will do fine
He is an incredibly energetic professor with a lot of passion for the subject (and his kids haha). I loved his spiritual thoughts and passion as he taught. I wish the questions were a little less about memorizing the notes, but this was better in that regard than most business classes.
Insanely test heavy. You can't wait until the last second to study or else you will fail. Also, all qualitative test questions come directly from the notes in his lectures. You NEED to memorize every little detail in the notes. His spiritual thoughts were by far my favorite part of class! TLDR: Fantastic Professor, hardest class I've ever taken
Lectures are insanely fast and you have to scribble things down super fast. 95% of class is graded on tests, 5% on quizzes
His tests come mostly come from the in class notes. The tests are moderately difficult however if you study you will be fine. The teacher is a total sales bro and gives a lot of good career advice however portrays opinions as facts and frequently brings up topic out of his scope as a teacher. For example giving his perspective on other programs;
Exams are everything! You can drop 1 of 4 mid-terms if you do research surveys. Everything he says in class and writes on his notes is fair game. So you know what to study for. He was really funny and Lectures were very energetic. Unit 2 is the hardest so study hard for that one! He gives a spiritual thought and Professional Development moment.
Brau is a beast. This was probably the best class I have taken at BYU. His spiritual thoughts are inspirational and you can tell he genuinely loves each of his students. Write down exactly what he says in class, study those notes, and you'll do fine on the test.
Brau is one of the most entertaining people i know. His spirtual thoughts were incredible and gives good life advice. Take very good notes in his class and read the textbook and you should do good. Know the intuition behind the formulas. The class is hard. There are 4 exams and a final. One of the exams is dropped though. Each exam covers 3 chapter
He goes so fast I eventually just stopped going to the lectures and teaching myself the material through the MyEducator Textbook. He's a great guy and very inspirational, but he will say his class isn't fast if you just read beforehand but even then it's SO fast. I personally didn't enjoy the class or his teaching style, but he is a cool person
Brau is an engaging and passionate professor, but his class is fast-paced and challenging. Attend lectures, take thorough notes, and study the textbook material thoroughly to succeed. The tests are focused on mastering the content, so be prepared to put in the work. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to rise to the occasion.
Professor Brau's class is fast-paced, but if you stay engaged and prepare diligently, you can succeed. His lectures are energetic and insightful, providing valuable professional development and spiritual perspectives. The tests are challenging, but mastering the content is key to doing well.
The class is fast-paced and requires a lot of preparation, but the professor's engaging teaching style and valuable insights make it worthwhile. Attend lectures, study the textbook, and you'll do well.
The class is challenging but the professor is very passionate and engaging. Attending lectures and keeping up with the textbook are key to doing well. Though tests are the main focus, the professor provides valuable professional development and spiritual insights during the lectures.
The prof is high energy and passionate, but you gotta keep up in class. Lots of good advice, but be ready to study hard for the exams. Using tools like unstuckstudy ai can help prep for the tests. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course if you put in the work.
Professor Brau brings a lot of energy and passion to his FIN201 class. While the material is challenging, attending lectures and studying the textbook thoroughly are key to success. I found unstuckstudy ai and ChatGPT helpful for exam prep. Overall, a rewarding experience with insightful spiritual discussions.
James Brau has been my absolute favorite professor I've taken so far. He has incredible spiritual thoughts that make you feel more than any religion class. He teaches more than just finance and he's incredibly funny and it's impossible to fall asleep in his class, also very dangerous if you do so because his lectures are crucial and move very fast
His class is funny and super engaging- which is a good thing because if you stop paying attention for even half a second, you're screwed. He writes notes by hand on a projector and has you copy them while he explains (which means you have a lot of handwritten notes but not a lot of resources to look back on if you have questions/didn't get it).
This is the only class where I have cried over hw. Like, violently sobbed. I cannot fathom why he is ranked so high. Some of the spiritual thoughts made me uncomfortable. Especially as a woman. He is a textbook finance bro in all the worst ways. God help me forgive this man.
Brau's class is challenging but worth it. He's passionate and engaging, with great spiritual/professional insights. Use the textbook, take detailed notes, and try Unstuckstudy AI - it really helped with test prep.
Brau is awesome, this was one of my favorite classes taken at BYU, thanks to him. He moves fast and content can be hard to understand, but his spiritual thoughts are memorable and impactful. Learned a ton.
In my interactions with Brau, he was super caring and kind! He was compassionate, especially with those graduating that semester. Often adjusting the structure of the course/extra help with study guides and practice problems as would help students. Exams were hard and worth most of the grade. (Taken Winter24-online class)
He has a very specific teaching style and he expects a lot out of his students. Pay close attention in class more than anything. Tests are 95% of your grade.
Brau requires you review him that's why he rates well. No grades besides tests, class is just him writing things down. No assignments,no way to know if you're prepared and not allowed to see what you got wrong. Asked for an exception,he called me out in class. Class structure is based on what he thinks would have helped his kids do better in college
Really enjoyed his class last winter. The class is test-heavy, but if you follow along in class you will know everything that you need (no curveballs on the test). Brau gives some awesome spiritual thoughts that I remember to this day. He is very energetic so don't expect to fall asleep in this class!
Stud. Big fan of his spiritual thoughts.
Wouldn't reccommend.
Currently retaking this class. Read the book, take notes, sit up close in class, take more notes, and it will be easy. There is a lot of hard work and reading, but it is worth it. Didn't go last time and got a C. Got 100% on the first test this year. Had an internship interview yesterday. Brau's class helped me land the internship easily.
His teaching style and speed will single handedly give you depression if you struggle on tests or don't understand something. Unnecessarily hard for an intro class. Entire grade is based on exams, TAs don't show up to TA labs. He's a stern military guy and moves insanely fast. He has some really good spiritual thoughts though.
He is an incredibly hard teacher and his class is not very helpful. He doesn't care a ton about his students and his test is all to do with the notes. His test questions more try to confuse you then actually you learning.
Wow, I think he should teach note-taking rather than finance because that is what he does. From a person who got an A in Accounting and learned a lot, I'm surprised how this made me not love the business school and want to drop out. I thought BYU was about repentance. This is just brutal and unforgiving. He doesn't teach he writes notes.
I love this man. Jim Brau will change your life for the better. Not gonna lie, I would take any class he ever teaches no matter the subject just because he is that good. So funny, and also a great teacher. He teaches much more than just finance
A very hard class, but worth it once you see how much you've learned that's real world applicable. His spiritual thoughts were the highlight of my weeks- it's humbling to watch a military finance professor cry because of the spirit. He could fill the entire auditorium with both laughter and the holy ghost. Highly highly recommend.
He's a great professor with amazing spiritual thoughts. Your grade is based on very difficult tests.
Do not take if you don't want to be a finance major. He is a great professor but purposefully teaches a little bit tougher to prepare those going into finance, and it helps you prepare for the program. Take it from another professor if you just need to take the class. If you do want to be a finance major this class will help a ton, just study a ton
Prof. Brau gives good spiritual thoughts but isn't great at teaching finance. He lectures so quick and doesn't explain things, just says "use your intuition." He doesn't cater to people learning for the first time. His notes are pretty bad too, they're hard to read and he shorthands everything. And exams are 95% of your grade, cumulative final too.
10/5 stars. You cannot take from a better professor. He has been my favorite professor at all of BYU. In addition to this, he has the best spiritual thoughts I've ever heard. Thank you, Brother Brau!
Jim is a great professor and has great lectures. I learned so much in his class. He is a very entertaining guy and you definitely are not bored in his class.
Very disorganized class. He has bad handwriting and his notes don't make sense.
Not a fan of his teaching style
Brau is hilarious and preaches understanding finance, and not just knowing how to do the problems. I feel like questions aren't always answered in a way that is helpful, but other than that he is great! He is very inspiring! Compared to other classes like Econ 110, this class is a piece of cake. Read the book, do the hw, and go to class.
No slides so you couldn't reference anything or have visuals. His notes were very hard to decipher and he went really fast so its hard to follow. Tests were super hard and 95% of your grade and no TA reviews. Taught this class to myself. I did like his spiritual thoughts. He made this class way harder than it had to be.
If you don't care about finance or don't want to major finance, you do not want to take his class. I promise you. I know more about bunny (his wife) than finance. You learn and are tested on his notes, not finance. His tangents are long and unhelpful. He goes through the motions, gets his notes written and you don't actually learn intro to finance.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM! Im in the online section and the materials is not helpful for the exams. Apparently his class notes are what are most important, but I'm an online student. The class videos DO NOT HELP! The syllabus talks about dropping your lowest grade, BUT he expects you to fill out surveys, which was NOT STATED on the syllabus
I respect Jim so much. Great man with a great heart. His teaching style isn't my favorite and his notes are TERRIBLE. Almost unreadable and hard to understand if you weren't in class. He abbreviates everything and is tough to understand when reading the notes. Great spiritual thoughts and heart of gold tho
I am absolutely appalled by all these high ratings. Not only was this class extremely difficult, surpassing the difficulty level of all the graduate level courses I am taking, but he was actively disrespectful towards several students in class and otherwise, myself included. This is likely the worst course I have taken at BYU.
This class made me want to get run over on the walk to the building. The exams are 95% of your grade. The only pros of this class were the spiritual thoughts. If you are not a good test taker, AVOID THIS CLASS. He goes crazy fast, terrible writing, no recording, and no visuals. He brags that the final is the hardest exam in your BYU career.
Be ready to spend hours a week studying for this class. Homework load itself is very manageable, but the exams will kill if you aren't prepared. He does drop one, but be ready to work hard. TA's aren't super helpful, textbook is. I would recommend relying on his drill problems and videos for exams and you'll have it down.
Brau cares deeply for his students and wants you to succeed. He has an open-door policy for anyone needing help. You definitely will need to put in the work and read the textbook before class because his teaching can be very fast. His spiritual thoughts were some of the highlights of my semester.
He is clearly a master at finance himself, but he does not know how to teach it. Lectures go way too fast. Misleading emphasis on the notes and their importance. You need an excessivley high level of intuition on how the equations work or you will fail. Just taught myself from the book and practice exams. Great guy, just not my kind of teacher.
He brings a ton of energy to lectures. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. Spiritual thoughts and professional development moments were awesome. However, your grade is 95% determined by exams, so if you aren't a good test taker I would consider choosing someone else for finance. Practice the drill problems and study the class notes!
Brau is loved by many of his students. I loved his spiritual thoughts and felt like I grew spiritually big time in his class, not so much in Finance, but spiritually. He teaches in a way that many people like me don't learn. You have to memorize notes he made a few years ago, and engaging with the material is on you.
An Amazing and Hard Class. I honestly chuckle at bad reviews for him. People say you're tested on notes, not finance, but that's not true - his notes are finance! He teaches in a certain way so you're actually forced to study and learn to earn the grade they want. You can do great in this class if you listen, work hard, and give the course respect.
His spiritual messages are thoughtful, powerful and had an impact on my life more than any teacher I have ever taken. Students who complain about certain things acting like Brau didn't do exactly what he said he was gonna do from the beginning. If you do what he tells you to do you get an A. I would recommend taking the class in-person tho.
This class is not hard if you study, but you really have to study. NOT an easy A. I did all the readings, reviewed notes, did all the practice problems and exams, but still found the class to be fairly difficult. There is a good curve, and he does have an extra credit opportunity. I wouldn't advise against taking him bc he seems to be a canon event
this guy's class was him scrawling incoherently on some paper under a document camera (zoom), interspersed with some WEIRD comments on religion and his wife(?). like literally my jaw dropped every class at the things he would say. he prayers were only offered by return missionaries in other languages.
I love JimmyB as a person. He is a guy with a good heart. BUT I am not a fan of his lecture. If you are good at memorizing things without putting meaning to it, you will do well. I just could not memorize so much in short time because I could not find why I was doing what I was doing. I managed to get an A though.
Brau is extremely caring and passionate about BYU, finance, and preaching the gospel. His lectures are interesting, albeit all over the place and confusing. They were extremely difficult to follow. I would advise reading the chapters before lectures if you want to understand them at all.
He's hands down my favorite professor I've ever had! Super inspirational, knows his stuff on finance better than anyone, gives great spiritual thoughts, and makes the entire class laugh out loud multiple times per lecture with his jokes!
