Hands down the worst proff I have ever had in my life. He is extremely unhelpful. He puts absolutely nothing on blackboard, assigns unclear assignments with little to no instructions. Extremely disorganized and marks with absolutely no regularity. I am a straight A student and I will definitely be retaking this class.

Stay away from this prof, he belongs in rural middle schools. Extremely unhelpful, doesn't post anything on blackboard, and hadn't marked our final paper which was 30% until after the final exam. Furthermore, there are no notes, no textbook, and questions are super specific about things he mentions one time in class.

Was there everyday and not many chances to participate yet it's worth 10%. Never clear on assignments, assigned one a week before exams without saying anything. Is very strict on his opinion, doesn't care for yours. NEVER returns anything back on time, went into the final without 60% of our grade. Tough marker, shows up late. Just Don't.

STAY AWAY ! The most inconsiderate professor I have ever came across in my degree, often laughed at the special needs student in class. Ridiculously hard midterm, over half the class failed. Very unclear with expectations, material that wasn't even taught was tested. Takes weeks to give marks back. When asking for feedback very condescending.

Attendance is mandatory in this class, but the exam questions were taken directly from the lecture notes. In this class you have to memorize like 30 symphonies/songs and be able to name the artist of the song and name the song title for the midterm exam.. NOT FUN, especially if you aren't musically inclined.

This prof leaves me speechless. I would not recommend him if you are looking for a good grade.

Worse prof ever. doesn't post anything on blackboard. I missed a class and I needed to know what I missed, common sense tells you to go on BB. However, to my surprise, nothing was there... I would strongly suggest you avoid his classes if you are looking for a grade that is 50% or higher. If you aiming for 49% and lower. He would be great for you.

Doesn't provide feedback on papers, just put a letter grade on it. His expectations are too high but does not give clear instructions on papers. He thinks B minus are good and C's are average, ummm no. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA.

For someone who teaches a GNED course he should not be marking so harshly. I was in the version of this class where we rotated professors and I was doing great until I had to endure his section of the course. I followed all the guidelines for his assignment and was given a poor mark for no good reason.

Probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. If you miss one class he will probably think you've missed 10. I got into an accident on my way to the midterm and when I showed up with 10 minutes left he wouldn't let me write the exam at a different time. I hadn't missed a single class so if you don't participate he doesn't even think you exist

He is the worst professor Ive ever had. He is extremely bitter, petty, hypocritical, and unclear. I could go on, but just trust me and AVOID HIM!!! He is a clear criteria of everything a prof shouldn't be. If you have a rotational GNED class, make sure you check EVERY prof that is involved

1201 is a good course and his might seem fun, but because of his entitled attitude and lack of respect for students, it is a nightmare. I don't recommend taking this class even though I managed to get an A. He's rude and entitled, everything you think a prof shouldn't be. GO to a different prof for this course. It'll be boring but more worth it!

Probably 1 of my least favorite profs Ive ever had. Took aesthetic techs & ideas & learnt it was a music themed course which was ok because I like music. However, Jim expected you to have deep music knowledge & did not convey that in class but definitely did when grading. Thank god for the other 3 modules w/ different profs or I wouldve failed.

He is something else. Doesn't give feedbacks. Belittles you for being different or having taste in MUSIC that is different than his. Final exam was a JOKE, didn't give clear information on what was going to be on the final and did everyone dirty. Do Not Take His Class. He needs to be taught how to teach. Loved him in the beginning but holy!!

Jim seems like a nice guy, but doesn't treat students with respect when meeting up with him individually- especially if it's about grades. The class is actually really interesting, but his grading is unclear from the rubric. One of the rudest profs I've ever had.

Jim is a nice and funny guy. However, I found him to be an extremely hard marker. I didnt enjoy this class as much as I wanted to which is a shame. I would recommend taking it with someone else.

Taught with another prof, so there were 4 sections all together. His notes and assessments were unclear, so even showing up, you didn't know what was important. The live performances were good, but lectures were unclear.

So disappointed with this course. The course outline is the most inaccurate representation of what the course actually turns out to be. Jim is a hard marker, his instructions for papers are unclear and his tests are unpredictable and hard. I wish I listened to the reviews and dropped his class. It's not worth the stress for a GNED course.

For a non-core class, this is the most difficult ever. All over the place. Don't even have my final grade yet but want to warn all 2020 students to AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.

A-W-F-U-L. As a THIRD-year university student never have I had so much homework (assigned readings, group projects, quizzes) in my entire time at Mount Royal. Jim seems to flex his superiority through unrealistic expectations for what a 1000-level course should be. Mind you, A FOUNDATION GNED. Waste of time & guranteed GPA bomb. Beware.

Jim is very one-sided and does not mark accordingly to the rubric he prescribes to the class. I recommend you drop this class immediately if you are taking it with him. Lots of group work and unrealistically difficult exams/quizzes. He doesn't post lectures and writes a few words on the chalkboard while he's speaking. Good luck getting notes.

Extremely unorganized. Class notes were often all over the place. He doesn't post lectures and only writes a few words on the board. Assigns complex, lengthly readings and expects students to grasp concepts far more complex than a foundation-level GNED should. This class stole at least 30-hours of study time from my other courses. Do NOT take.

He seemed great at first, but asthe semester continued, the novely wore off. The tests he give are based on complex readings in which you have to memorize miniscule details, he gives little feedback, and his humour comes off as very disrespecful. To get an A you have to work enormously hard, considering it is a GNED. I would not recommend.

As a 4th yr student, Jim is the worst professor I've had during my tenure at MRU. He makes an easy 1st yr course extremely hard by holding unreasonable expectations. He's one of those guys thats 2 smart about the subject so he expects everyone to be like that. As an A student, I felt like he was reluctant to give me an 80. Marks too hard and late.

The most disrespectful prof. This is a class about music, and although the quizzes are not bad, he marks so damn hard, and he claims to mark "very easy". Literally the members in my group had a B+ as the highest grade, and he is one of the most rude teachers - email him and don't expect much. Literally take another 1200 course or just wait a sem.

He is not interested to make a communication with students due he takes many days in answer an email, and looks clearly that he is not interested about it. even if he said "make any question I will answer" it is not true. He does not like to answer questions. looks does not like his prof job

Jim is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Me and many others in this class felt he was incredible disrespectful and hard to communicate with. It would take 5-6 emails before he would just tell you what time he could meet for projects or help. There was absolutely no lectures presented by him instead there were just videos and worksheets.

I took this class online due to covid and it was terrible. He did not record or teach lectures. It is all videos from YouTube that he didn't make and worksheets. I don't know why we have a prof for this class sense he doesn't answer email or tech. I have never had a whole class hate a prof like this one. Do not take this class especially online.

The worst professor Ive had by far. He makes himself sound so caring and nice but in reality, he is the opposite. Tough grader, takes ages to mark, and does not give feedback. Everything is based on YouTube videos and dense readings. He does not answer emails. Has high expectations when he does not teach you anything. Avoid him at all costs.

Jim is the worst professor ever. He has no sense of professionalism and thinks he is the king of music. All he does is give YouTube videos to watch and then gives useless assignments and quizzes. After all this he does not given a good grade and is a tough marker. Do not take his class.

Absolutely horrible professor. Please, if you have the option not to take this class, do it. Jim might be the worst professor for an online class. The only thing you do is watch pointless videos and dense readings that will offer you no intellectual stimulation. Get ready to spend the entire semester wishing you did not sign up for this class. Extremely tedious and difficult for a first-year GNED.

Prof Brenan is extremely inefficient with returning grades so there is no room to grow from one assignment to the next, but there's very few assignments/tests to begin with so they're all a significant grade. He lectures solely through youtube. Instructions are very vague, and test questions request specific video quotes rather than content. Awful.

This class was a nightmare. I signed up under the impression that I was going to be taught this course by one professor, Guy Obrecht and was very disappointed to see Jim Brenan taught the first half. He provides you with a YouTube education and tests so specific its very hard to do well. This guy was awful. Avoid at all costs.

I took this class in the winter sem and wouldn't recommend it. He doesn't teach at all. Marks so slowly. When he says to ask questions he barely answers. He ignores it. He says you don't have to put citations for your essay but don't be fooled you HAVE TO. Unlike other professors who don't care. He just set you up to fail. PLS DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Do not take this class. He has very few assignments to boost your mark so it's basically all or nothing. He's such a hard marker for a gned class. Attendance is a must he does not post any notes. Super unclear when asking for more details about assignments, he makes it seem like you should've gotten it the first time. DO NOT TAKE IT.

Jim seems like a nice professor at the start but he is a super tough grader with a huge ego. He will not listen to opinions but his own and will shut you down as soon as he faces criticism. He is not lenient AT ALL and does not tolerate ANYTHING. He caused unnecessary stress in my life. You are much better off not taking this useless class.

Attendance is mandatory if you want notes. He has a paper worth 30% which he only grades grammar. He is super vague about what's going to be on quizzes. He also has a very bad attitude. He tells students they won't finish with a mark higher than a C. He also talked about how he got a student expelled which seemed like he was bragging about it.

Horrific class. It seems like he enjoys watching his students fail. Horrible communication (Takes 48 hrs minimum to respond) and so condescending. An essay worth 30% and a huge group presentation at the end that he marks HARD. Do yourself a favour and don't take this class unless you literally wanna suffer and dread every second of the semester

GNED1201 Was the single worst class I have ever taken, Jim brags about stirring up and damaging the lives of his students while clearly illustrating that it is his pride and hissy-fits that cause the biggest problems. He is beyond far from understanding and he gives very few opportunities to boost your grade within the 2 tasks he assigns. DONOTTAKE

he told us a story about getting a kid expelled. he seemed proud about it now I know it is no joke. he jumps through any hoop possible to give you a bad grade. with ridiculous 40% penalties for anything you do wrong. this class has 2 huge projects that he will grade HARSH. don't recommend

Be prepared for a 30% group project with a 10-minute presentation per person. Tough grader on grammars. Only a few words on assignment feedback. I attended almost every class; the lectures were interesting and informative, but they did not help with your assignments.

He will not post lectures online so if you miss class you're screwed. There is no chance to make up marks if you do badly on one assignment because of the limited amount. If you do show up for class, half the time is just him talking about himself and his generic typical teenager backstory copied from every 80s kid. Also does group presentation

This guy is the greatest professor to ever teach at a university is what an inmate from an insane asylum would say. Who knows how many lives this guy has ruined because of his terrible teaching with no notes posted, poor lectures, and things that are on the quiz that he mentions for one sentence. He grades only on grammar, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

Horrible. Don't even risk taking a class with him. In class he seems chill but when it comes down grading, he is so tough.

This man tells you on your opinion paper to not research ANYTHING, he wants purely your opinion on the album then proceeds to give us examples of "good work" and they all include research and the "bad ones" dont. He's very unclear and will give you a harsh grade even if you did good. avoid at all costs..

Jim does not know how to teach, He believes he is the knower of all music and if you don't agree with him he will not like you and make it very obvious during the class. He puts questions on tests about things that are briefly mentioned weeks before including questions with answers from youtube videos which he provides no link for.

You have to show up to classes in order to gather info on tests but still, the tests are extremely difficult. Hard marker as well.

Jim does not give any feedback on projects and marks EXTREMELY HARD. Don't take him. Seriously. He doesn't care at all about his students and barley hands out A's in the class. He messes up gradings for tests, and the only way to find out if your mark is legit is to book an appointment to actually SEE your test and see HIS grading mistakes!!!!!

Worst teacher I have had in university so far. He does not care to actually teach, provides no notes, and if you miss one class you end up being completely lost on his ONE of TWO exams that he shoves all of his content into.

Jim will never change, even after reading these reviews. He is a very apathetic professor who takes delight in his reputation as a hard ass, and he is clearly not in the profession of teaching to educate. It is all about his ego.
