Dr. Cook is an awesome professor! I took his HIST 2600 in the summer and it was great. One absence was allowed. Textbooks are necessary, but extremely interesting. Grades are based on attendance, 3 tests, 2 papers, and one final. He gives an EXTREMELY interesting alt. view on U.S. history. Take the course, study, attend class & you'll do fine.
Awesome teacher!!! Really loves the subject and has been places of historic value and has good side stories about historical figures that he fits into the lecture and makes it interesting! Read the notes and attend class and you'll do well on the test!!!
History 2600, Problems in US History. We met two times a week for 30 min. He lectures off slides. We did have questions to answer from the Howard Zinn book, questions are 4 pages long each week. Likes student participation. Knows what he is talking about. Very Interesting! Encourages you to use office hours. Sometimes forgetful. Great & Easy Teacher
no comment
Had him for History 1010 and 2600. Both were great classes and easy. Part of your grade is attendance. 3 tests, a paper, and a final. Take this guy!
His lectures are interesting because he takes a different point of view. Three tests 2 easy essays on books that are interesting as well. I highly recommend him.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. Knows his material. Does not waste your time! The final is easy!
Good class. You have to do all the work if you want to pass. Good teacher. easy final.
He is a good professor. However the textbooks used are hard to understand. You have Zinn Chapters assigned every week and on Tuesdays or Thursdays hv a discussion about the answers. He picks on students for points. There are a lot of Notes to take in this class. Be prepared to write. The tests are somewhat ok. Not as easy though.
If you dont get at least an A or a B in this class means your probably being lazy. Cook is a easy going guy and if you go to class and get the participation points he uses your good. His exams are pretty easy and you have to write two essays and if you manage your time they are easy as well. Easy A.
He is a great professor and very easy going. His class is not hard at all just make sure you study for the test. I was on my phone the whole time and I never paid attention and still got an A-.
You must come to class everyday to take notes, the test will be on those, and you have no text book to cover that material. Lots of slightly difficult reading due every week. Must participate for a grade. He moves pretty fast and covers a lot. test are multiple choice, and your final is cumulative. He's alright.
He is willing to help any time, you must read the book to answer in class questions in order to get participation points, must study for test but they are easy, then the final are the same questions as the previous test so you can get an A for sure on the final. easy class take it with him
Cook is a fantastic professor. He offers a new perspective on American History unlike what we learned in HS. his class can be quite boring since all you do is take notes and go over assigned reading questions but I recommend him. His test might be hard if you don't have help from a student who took the class previous semester (hint hint) but read the notes and know how to interpret them and you're good!
Professor Cook is an amazing teacher! I definitely recommend taking his course. If I have a chance to take him for another history class I will!
Superb professor. Very helpful, very easy. Pretty nice guy. However, he teaches from Howard Zinn who is an extreme leftist radical. His points distort historical facts with either suggestions or outright lies to suit his political agenda. Some of the book got it right, but there is almost no political neutrality to this class. Conservatives beware.
Dr. Cook is an excellent professor. He definently knows his stuff and is a nice guy. He bases majority of his test questions on Howard Zinn. All tests are multiple choice except final which is multiple choice and essay questions. But he gives them to you ahead of time. As long as you attend class and get the notes, you should pass this class easily
This professor is great! He is very knowledgeable and enjoys what he is teaching. Theres 3 tests which aren't too hard if you've been doing your reading and taking good notes in class.
He wan an awesome teacher. He can be boring at times, but the class is pretty easy. 3 tests and 2 easy essays. one final which is on all the previous tests and 5 essay questions. Would really recommend!
Pretty good teacher, he sure knows what he is talking about. STUDY lecture notes for all 4 exams! All exams are multi. choice except for final, it is "essay questions" aka short answer questions. READ Zinn chapters assigned and answer questions for participation points. Overall interesting class. PS he takes a while to reply emails...
He made history interesting. Just show up to class to get credit for attendance. Also, study off of his PowerPoints and you will do well.
4 exam and 3 essays. I guess the finals were changed up because we had to write 6 essays, but you'll pass if you take the time and effort to study and ask for help when you need it. Attendance is very important because it may make or break your grade at the end. He makes pretty lame, but funny jokes on his presentation.
There are 4 multiple choice tests, 2 essays, and a final with 5 essay questions(that are given ahead of time).Tests are based completely off the PP (on blackboard) and Zinn questions. He's a nice professor who knows a lot about the subject and wants his students to succeed. An A is possible if you pay attention in class and study for the tests.
He is very stuck in his ways. The only thing your grade is based off of is the tests and a couple papers. I asked if he could provide homework and /or a study guide because its A TON of material and refused relentlessly.
Lectures do not follow the book and tests are all multiple choice (except the final). Has a Q&A session after the lectures which are worth participation points.
Cook is overall a great professor! He's truly down to earth, always there to hear out student's concerns. His class structure was simple: 3 exams, 2 papers and weekly online quiz sessions you do in class based off of the readings. He assigns A TON of reading, but honestly you could do good without it since the questions he asks aren't specific.
Prof Cook is incredibly knowledgeable and is really passionate about this class. I originally thought his class was going to be stupid, but it was actually incredibly interesting; definitely recommend.
Gives out a ton of material to read.
He makes us read way too much! Expect reading 100 pages or more at times for the questions asked in his weekly learning catalytics quiz. He goes through the PowerPoints really fast, but he puts them up online. Prepare to study for the 3 exams he gives, the questions can be very specific. He assigns 2 analytical papers, but they're not that bad.
I enjoyed taking Professor Cook. The class is based on 3 exams, 2 analysis papers, weekly quizzes on the reading, and the final. The exams are all multiple choice and fairly easy if you study. The analysis papers are not difficult and he does not grade tough. There is a lot of reading each week, but the quizzes are easy points. Would recommend.
Dr. Cook is not a great professor. On the very first day, he didn't introduce himself or anything. He just jumped right into the lectures. His lectures are so long, he expects you to read so much since he gives weekly quizzes, and he wouldn't interact much with students as most professors would. If anyone gets him, good luck!
LOTS of reading and writing! He has all powerpoint lectures up in Blackboard all the time so I recommend writing the notes BEFORE class, as he tends to speed through it. Weekly quizzes MAKE SURE TO READ THE ARTICLES he gets the majority of his Qs from there
This class had interesting material, but it was incredibly lecture heavy, and he doesn't slow down. You have to read articles for weekly quizzes in order to pass. You also must have reliable technology (phone, laptop) to take his quizzes in class. He is not helpful when students don't have access to a phone or computer.
Dr. Cook's class isn't difficult, but you definitely need to get on top of things in order to maintain an A. He assigns so much reading because he gives weekly quizzes and the worst part about his class is he lectures too fast and doesn't slow down. He also provides no study guide for his exams, which was totally unhelpful. I don't recommend him.
Dr. Cook seems to be a cool person outside of class, but as a professor, I wouldn't recommend him. Slides are lengthy, doesn't give study guides for tests. Weekly quizzes on 30 page chapters. He does give you 1 point for just answering, 2 for getting it right. Doesn't post grades up on anything, you have to ask.
There is a quiz once per week and they are not hard. Majority of the quiz questions are in the syllabus and on the last page of the chapter in the book. Test are on the lecture and it is not cumulative. There are two essays which are about three pages long each and its not hard at all. Final Exam question are given to you in advance.
He is passionate about teaching and you can tell he loves his job. Every lecture is only him talking and sometimes we watch videos. Quizzes every Friday on articles and chapters (you get one point for each question just by answering it) . 3 tests and 2 analysis papers. Classes aren't mandatory but he talks about things that could pop up on test
I didn't like this professor at all. He teaches his opinions rather than factual history. He also expects you to read A TON. He lectures throughout every class, everyday and there's no student interaction. There's weekly quizzes, tests, papers, and a final. The tests were REALLY difficult. This class was way too much for a GE course.
Only showed up on days of the quiz towards the end of the semester. A lot of what he lectures is stuff you learned in HS history classes with a slight twist. Got a B, but could have easily obtained an A if I tried a little harder. Good class if you like history and was very easy. Would take again.
I took Dr. Cook at Merced College, for both 17A and 17B, and his class was super easy. All you have to do is listen to his lectures and read the powerpoint and you can easily get an A. Tests and assignments are right from the lectures. He is a little slow in replying to emails but he does reply and is an easy grader. Would take him again!
Professor Cook is clear of what he expects out of his students. He gives a lot of readings, so be prepared to read. He gives 3 exams in total and quizzes every Friday. I recommend him for Hist 2600.
Lectures most classes but you can pre print all of your notes AND theres only 3 exams. All exams were super easy because he only included items specifically from the notes. Super easy class to pass and he's very kind and calm
Get ready to read a lot every week you read two books one is an edited one by him. He lectures with power points (which you can preprint out) and then follows with a video and quiz on friday and finishes off the videos. Interesting class and he can be funny highly recommend. Three test based on notes quizzes based on reading.
I took Cook in the fall of 2017. It was an easy class, quizzes every week, a couple tests and the final was just a report. There was a lot of reading but I stopped midway. I passed the class with a B though because I didn't pay attention a lot in class so make sure to be aware
Horrible class. Fully based off the power point, but he teaches so bland that it is hard to pay attention in his class. The quizzes are easy, but the tests are so hard. You don't know what to study before.
Class time consists of lecture and note taking. There are weekly readings online and in a textbook. Then you are quizzed on those readings that same week. Very interesting and engaging. Definitely recommend!!!
Professor Cook did not make me enjoy History. There are tons of readings every week that correspond to the weekly quizzes. A few times he gave quizzes out even though he did not tell us the correct readings for that week. Something good is his exams are exactly his lectures and does allow you to make up work.
He is so sweet, and cares about his students. He gives lectures and some days you watch videos. It is an interesting class and he is funny. Would take him again.
Great professor!
I don't like history but this was a fair class! People say that his test hard but his test are literally all on his PowerPoints so study those. Not hard at all, people just decided not to pay attention when he directly says that the test are all on His PowerPoints. The quizzes are online and they're easy. Defenitly recommend him.
Professor Cook was simple. Tests are only on PowerPoints which he goes over in class. Weekly quizzes are simple enough to guess correctly and the few essays are just answering questions. The difficult part of this course is that half of it is only based on the book by Zinn which he provides so you can't pass with ONLY solid prior history knowledge.
He goes way to fast on the lecture so much reading. You will have to read several pages from the actual book and the zin chapter book that is also very lengthy. His test are often not corresponding to the reading that he informs the class we will be taking a test on.
Prof. doesn't stay long after class unless you talk to him before the SI leader. SI session times weren't varied and couldn't get the help I needed even though I asked if they could have different times. SI leader seemed to not check her email frequently and for study guides, it took her 4 days to get to me which left me half of a day to prepare.
While there is a ton of reading to do the SI leaders are extremely helpful tutors and will save your grade. If you go to the SI session you will definitely pass the class. Hes an easy grader and is really nice and understanding.
The professor is a nice guy, the class is not bad what so ever, but it can be boring at times, there is a lot of reading so be ready for that, and honestly if you just study the powerpoints and go to the SI sessions, you should be able to pass the class with a good grade.
Get ready to read quiet a lot in this class. Readings arent that bad though, theyre bearable. Weekly quizzes arent hard at all if you do the readings, questions are straight from the readings. Exams are straight from PowerPoint lectures and readings. Cook is very funny and caring and tries to make his class easy.
his lectures are powerpoint based and it is sometimes hard to keep up because he goes fast. there are weekly quizzes based on the weeks lectures, 3 exams, and a final. he published his own book, and you have to be faithful to it or you will not pass.
As someone who hates history, I really enjoyed this course with Professor Cook. You can tell that he really enjoys what he teaches and his lessons are interesting. As long as you show up to class, take notes, read, and show up to SI (if available) you will be fine and pass the class with no problem.
Print notes beforehand and you will be fine during lectures. He gives out a lot of information so its best to print out the notes that way youre focusing on what hes saying and not on writing down whats on the PowerPoint.
Professor Cook is a fun and nice professor. I liked his class. The class for the most part is super easy. The test are on the powerpoint and the quizzes are from Zinn and the 2 papers are super esay. Overall, fun class and in order to fail this class just dont do anything. P.s. Use "Other Soruces" for help on the quizzes.
many opportunities to learn material, easy final
Dr. Cook was a great professor. I took Contemporary United States History with him and was not disappointed. Two books to read answer some questions. The tests were a little tough, but manageable. Overall, great guy. Lecture heavy, but easy.
Very nice guy, tons of lecture material and the textbooks can be difficult to get through but as long as you go to SI sessions youll be fine. The SI leaders go over everything you need
He is a very good and understanding professor. He bases his quizzes off the book and is clear with his criteria of the class as well as grading. He makes the class enjoyable and teaches History very well.
Really nice guy, he always wants to help his students. Would absolutely take more classes with him. But be prepared to read a lot, and if the readings are too hard to get through go to SI, she goes over everything you need and breaks it down.
Professor Cook is a very nice and chill guy! Class consists of lectures and videos with questions to answer, but we go over it together in case you didnt answer a question. The exams are based on lectures, zinn textbook, and the book he wrote. You must understand zinn and zinns own opinion on issues to do well on exams. You must read his book too
I was not fond of the fact that lectures and videos were the main component of this class. I didn't feel that I was learning for anything other than getting a grade, and the exams were difficult in my opinion.
Expects you to read a TON. Two books required. He tests from the two books and lectures, but the information he test on is never given. Hardest tests I have taken. Lectures lack information and book chapters are 20+ pages each..
This professor is such a good guy, I would def recommend taking his class. He gives you an unlimited amount of time to do test online. He does not assign a ton of work. His classes online are just lectures but he does his best to be interesting and is just a good professor!
Not horrible but not great either. When I took his class, it was boring and quite uneventful. And he doesnt give study guides out for exams so be sure to read all PowerPoints and take notes. But the exams werent hard at all and is an easy A. If you have study groups, studying makes it easy to get the A that you want.
Class requires A LOT of reading. Two books are used for the class. One is free. Go to the SI sessions to help with exams and the readings! Exams are not too difficult if you look over the lectures and review the books. Worst part of the class are the readings, but the assignments are easy and are worth more points than the exams.
Funny guy. Very lecture heavy, it's non-stop powerpoints but he does add humor to them. Super understanding and chill. Attendance is non-mandatory but it does help if you want to pass. He gives an unlimited time for the exams. Does assign some homework, but it is super easy--videos with Q&A. There are two "major" essays. The final was easy as well.
Professor Cook is a pretty dope person. Super knowledgeable and sometimes cracks funny jokes. Hes a super chill, laid back guy. The class is super lecture heavy so if you find history boring you prob wouldnt like the class. Theres 3 exams, 1 final, and 3 book report things where you have to answer questions about books he gives. No participation
Cool guy. His lectures are really interesting and his personality really spices things up. Never a dull class. The assignments aren't too difficult, as long as you read the assigned text. The exams are not too hard, and the book assignments are fine, but be prepared to read.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but listening in to the lectures is super important if you want to pass. He provides all the slides in Canvas. HW is minimal & easy, but there's a ton of reading from the 2 books. Answer the ?'s as you read. There's 3 exams, 2 easy "Analysis Papers", and the final is x2 500 word essays based off 2 documentaries. Study!
He is honestly a cool teacher, though beware he gets through lecturesfast and there could be sudden quizzes (mostly on Mondays and here and there on Fridays). Other than that he adds humor to add some fun into his lectures, he understands if you can't attend something and does everything he can to help, I totally recommend him.
This professor is the best option to choose for HIST2600. You have 3 exams, 2 research papers, occasional quizzes, and a simple final exam. The 3 exams are open notes from the lectures he's given. Even if you dislike the subject of history, professor Cook will literally change your mind by how fascinating the lectures are.
This class is mainly just lectures, easy quizzes, 3 exams, and 2 analysis papers. It was easy and Professor Cook is a great lecturer and story teller.
Prof Cook is a character. While his class is pure lectures other than some quizzes on Mondays, I still enjoyed the class. He tells stories in almost every lecture. Class consists of 2 "essays," 3 tests, 10 quizzes, and a thousand-word final. No participation is needed. Just show up and take notes and you should get an A. Would recommend Dr. Cook.
Exams are open note, two papers based on a book and easy final. Professor Cook is so kind and will make history fun for you!!!! Take his class if you get the chance!
He talks about history like it was a story, no memorizing bullet points
Professor Cook incorporates a lot of the readings into the quizzes. Really chill and allowed us to use notes/book/phones on the exams
Prof. Cook is a great choice if you are in between professors for this course. All of his lectures are posted online, so attendance isn't mandatory. There are weekly quizzes that are based on the 2 necessary books. His 3 exams are all open to notes and lectures. His final exam is 5 questions that are based on the lectures throughout the semester.
Prof. Cook is a great choice if you do not want to fail. His lectures are posted online so mostly I would recommend type what he says for more information that is not stated in the slides. The quizzes are based off of two books which one is online and one you can rent. The final exam is pretty easy so I recommend to do an outline for each question.
This is my second time taking one of Professor Cooks's classes, and I will tell you now I will take him again. He is a very kind and funny professor who brings his lectures to life and makes them interesting for us students.
I took this class online, easy class, A couple of papers but nothing hard (very short), no tests, read 1 chapter a week, asks questions in class about the book then goes over them, overall, a good professor for this class
He's a fine professor, but just seems very scattered. Couldn't remember which edition of the book he required, doesn't seem to know any of the assignments he has assigned. He read them with us as if it was the first time he had ever seen them. But it is a very easy class.
His class really isn't that bad how people make it seem. His class goes in chronological order from the stone age to present day. It was really entertaining now that I look back. The exams and everything are open note which is good. This guy is a master at presenting because he doesn't need no notes to present the slides. Overall, pretty good.
Very nice professor, attendance isn't required but there is a quiz every week. Quizzes are done in teams so it isn't hard at all. 3 exams total and they are all open note. 2 analysis essays for the semester and are very simple. Very interesting lectures.
Just pay attention in class and attend the weekly quizzes and you'll do fine. Also, exams are open notes...what more can you ask for?
Pretty easy class. 3 exams taken during the semester all online and multiple choice. Every Thursday there was live quizzes that you take and receive .5/1 for attempting a question out of 10 questions. During those quizzes he wants you to talk to the people around you and discuss the possible answer. Final exam was OPEN-NOTE on a Blue Book in class.
Very easy class! Two books are required that you have to pay for, and 3 exams that are all online and multiple choice. Every Thursday, there were live quizzes that you were encouraged to talk to the people around you and discuss the answers. The final exam was open-note in class. 2 analysis essays for the semester. Overall, I enjoyed this class!
Awesome professor. He has SI sessions, which helped a lot in his class. Only read one chapter from his book per week for the quiz (subscription) and you have to listen to what he says rather than the slides. He's also lenient if you miss a video and allows make-up work if you ask him for it.
Easiest class ever.
Most easiest professor ever. Even though the class was online, everything was laid out perfectly for all the assignments. It was very well organized. Take him if you can.
The class is fully online. You can pace yourself however you want. A module is due every month and can take up to 3 hours to complete. His online lectures are insightful and interesting. There's 3 exams, a few Ted Eds, a book you have to analyze and answer questions (around 20 chapters), and essays. Chill class with a chill guy idk what to tell ya.
