Amazing!! for starters; he's genius!!! brilliant! (check up his resume - look him up). very interesting way of teaching, very focused and very clear. You'd be crazy not to take cognitive science with him!!! WARNING: you'll get hooked up, and might want to change majors!
Fantastic prof. Took the class as an elective, and he made me seriously think about changing majors. Probably the best prof I've had in two years at Carleton
this was an absolutely amazing class. This semester was the first time the intro to cog. sci. has been taught, and Prof Davies did an amazing job!! He is a great lecturer and gives great examples from his own life to help you understand the material. If you're choosing between taking cgsc 1001 and psyc 1001 DEFINATELY take CGSC! Davies is brilliant
Jim Davies is an excellent lecturer. He has a background in acting, so he has a very clear and captivating voice. He is extremely knowledgeable and can answer most questions easily. It is practically impossible to pass this class without attending lecture, but the lectures are always interesting and worth seeing.
Really good prof! Always explains concepts very clearly and gives concrete examples from everyday life which come in very handy on his exams! The mid term and final are each worth 50% so you have to study but they are very easy if you do! He even tells you which lectures the questions are from. Really really enjoyed this class! Very interesting!
Good solid prof who always appreciates student discussions, comments and feedback. Did not use a textbook but you are required to read various articles, brings in various pop culture references such as AI from movies etc. Understands what it is like to be an undergrad and always has/makes time for his students in and out of class (if demonstrated)
Great professor, super knowledgeable and really passionate. Did not use a textbook, but always had readings available to help clarify lectures. Definitely a class I would recommend
Very interesting class. Jim is super intelligent and knows more than anybody can imagine. Jim makes you want to attend his lectures, although, i took it online, I was very eager to listen to each lecture. No textbook but he does provide readings online. 3 M/C exams, if you study well enough A is guaranteed.Do not even hesitate to take him!!!!
He's such a good prof. He's clear with theories and content. Exams are easy as well.
great prof and really clear when giving lectures, adds in pop culture references and lectures are all interesting.
The material of his class is interesting in the first place but Prof. Davies' quirky personality and genuine approach made the class my favourite during my first year!
Fairly interesting course for somebody who has never taken any psychology courses in university. Unfortunately he talks as if cognitive science is the best thing since the invention of the car, and at times makes it sound as if he's making up stuff on the fly. He does explain stuff with good intention, but should teach what he knows.
Amazing prof. He chooses all the material himself and it shows. Covered topics from memetics, brain development, and even the cognitive aspects of religion. He is such an interesting guy that you would totally want to be friends with outside of class. Take it as an elective, amazing class and not hard! Grade is the 3 exams equally weighed(33% each)
He is awesome! When I watch his lectures online time just flies by! I've actually started attending his class "live" now! I'm no morning person but I would get up at 7am just to go watch his lectures in person!
Davies is the man. Charismatic. Hilarious. Quirky. Interesting. Even if you think you don't find cognitive science interesting, take this class and he will change your mind. Super intriguing lectures, and not a heavy workload. He's very interested in Sci-Fi and the world of A.I. Davies is without a doubt the coolest nerd around.
Not impressed. Past students suggested this course as an elective being a fairly easy & fun course. That changed this year with a paper component being added & making the exams more difficult than previous years, making you work harder like it's a course required in order to just PASS! Don't recommend as an elective. Interesting content regardless!
I can easily say that he was the best professor of my first semester at Carleton, extremely clear explanations and lectures, hilarious storieselaborations (9 times out of 10 related to the lecture) and overall a pretty awesome guy. Very helpful over email as well.
Great lectures- I honestly didn't need to go to them because everything was on the slides that he posted online but I went out of interest. The assignment was pretty simple and the midterms and final were not bad. I highly recommend
I took this class as an elective during first year... Such a fun and interesting professor! Ended up switching into cognitive science after one class with him. Interesting material and genuinely a fun class.
Professor Jim Davies made the class interesting and easy. There were no difficult concepts to understand, as he made everything clear. You could skip class and study off the slides. The two midterms and the exam are easy. The essay was also a simple task, as you pick what concept you want to talk about. There is no textbook used. Take the class!
I took a cogni psyc class before and hated it, but really wanted to do vod so took this one... and LOVED it. He is a confident, engaging, and funny lecturer who always has interesting bits of knowledge that you can apply in real life. No textbook, and the midterm and exam are cake. You pretty much just need to go to class and study the slides.
I love him so much. Best class of my entire life. Easy to talk to. He's beautiful and seems like hes famous.
Jim is a great prof. He made the subject very interesting. There are no trick questions on his exams. Attend lectures, follow along with his slides, and you'll do great. His lectures are actually fun to attend
HE'S JUST GREAT
Professor Davies makes the lectures fun and interesting. If you go to the lectures and understand all the concepts, you'll do well.
I took this class based on the numerous good reviews on here. However, I found Professor Davies' content was all over the place. I could've fallen asleep during his lectures. The paper was effortless and a mark booster. He seems like a really swell guy, and he is very passionate about what he does. I personally just did not enjoy his classes.
Very fun and interesting!
Loved this class. Wide variety of topics, most of them interesting, many of them useful in life. His style and love for the topic is inspiring.
EXAMS ARE HARD !!!!
Funny lectures, grading scheme is spread out very evenly. Highly recommend.
Was a great and easy class, bought the vod service so would listen to lectures on the way into school was awesome way to study, midterm was 54 multiple choice all straight forward
I believe that this prof is one of the top professors at Carleton. You will never get bored at his lectures. He makes them so interesting. However, the midterm isn't as easy as you think it is. Even though it's all MC, it's quite confusing at times and the questions are tricky. You need to understand the material, not just memorize the info.
The best professor I have ever had at Carleton. His lectures are very interesting and clear. I took the online class and as long as you watch the lectures and study you will do very well.
Lots of the lectures don't seem so relevant or continuous. He uses LOTS of TED talks in his lectures, which makes studying easier (just re-watch them, go over your notes, and you're golden). A great course for anyone looking for an easy elective to boost the CGPA.
My favourite professor so far at Carleton. His lectures are super interesting and makes you question the way you perceive the world. As much as I hated 8:30am classes (so does everyone) I actually looked forward to going in the morning because he does a great job keeping you interested and interacts with the class using texting polls. Great prof!
Prof Davies was good, passionate about his field, and kept students engaged. However, I disliked him constantly degrading other academic fields while providing no empirical support for his comments, exam questions were poorly written, and the 'essay' was too broad and short. Attend class as slides are very general. Overall the course was average.
Very good professor, provides lots of in-depth explanations for the material and is good at simplifying complex topics into simple terms. I found it particularly easier because of how interesting I found the material, midterm/exams are pretty easy as long as you actually learn the material and not just memorize it the night before.
Jim is my favourite. He's hilarious, and he makes complicated topics seem simple AND interesting. What a guy. If you get a chance to take Mysteries of the Mind, do! There is a MC midterm, a VERY short and simple essay (on which you can easily score 100%) and a MC exam. Highly recommended.
I am individual returning back to school after 30 years. Professor Davies has made coming back to school a great transition. His teaching style and method was easy to follow and he took the time to explain things! Thank you, Professor!
He's really clear about everything, and makes lectures interesting by throwing in a lot of relevant multimedia clips. The tests are fair, and he will always be sure to double check the marks! There's also no textbook, so you can save some money
Awesome prof! Lectures are always very interesting, has a great sense of humour, and explains things very clearly so it's easy to understand the material. And plus, the course was pretty easy too!
Had him as a prof and as a supervisor for research internship. Exams are all multiple choice and come straight from the lectures/slides. All readings are optional. Great, interesting topics covered and very riveting lectures (easy to listen to). He cares about the students but due to the size of CGSC 1001, he doesn't have office hours (TAs do)
Best prof/class at Carleton.
Jim was one of my favourite profs in first year. He keeps the class funny and you're never bored. I didn't miss his lectures because I genuinely enjoyed them. I would take this class again. No textbook required was also a nice touch. The tests were 2 midterms and a final (all multiple choice)
Loved the classes, enjoyed learning from Jim Davies.
I was told Mystery's of the Mind was an easy elective. I ended up dropping this course. There are four online quizzes you will get the marks from the top two & essay. Sound easy but its HARD. I found the TA's were not on the same page some got 50% on what seemed like well written essays, and someone with no intro or conclusion got a 90%.
Told the class was an easy elective but it actually turned into my hardest course. It felt like to many small things (mentioned once) were on the quizzes. The slides themselves aren't helpful so you have to rely on your ability to take notes during class. This can be difficult as he speaks quite fast so, you should be able to write quickly.
Davies is good but the TA's for this class have been useless; the system for testing crashed during the first test and had errors in the second as well. Beware
Great prof, knows how to keep lectures interesting without droning (he studies how people 'work' after all). Very descriptive and successfully makes jokes that aren't bad during lectures. Show up to class, absorb material and you'll do great.
Only two quizzes worth 40% for a final mark and an essay. I did super well in his class but I did work hard as well. Super interesting!! Would recommend this class.
Incredible professor, honestly. I just had the opportunity to take his mysteries of the mind course and it was a blast. Not hard at all as long as you put some effort in. He's incredibly entertaining and truly cares about you doing well. He's a great guy overall and has definitely been another amazing prof that I've come across at Carleton!
Great Prof. Makes the online videos not unbearable to watch. Enjoyed the class
He's awesome
Great class, Davies has great lectures and makes everything easy to follow. Also you should check out his Ted talk to see a good example.
Class attendance doesn't add much value, he takes his time reading over slides and talks a lot with saying anything new. BUT he will sometimes mention pointless random details that he will test on. Jim also provides oversimplified, and sometimes misleading definitions/examples. Other than that he seems like a good guy and likes his students.
Found out the class would not count towards a credit because I took it online. Still was my favorite class and I continued to do everything in it even after i found out because it was very engaging and interesting. He will be a prof that I will remember for a long time!
Might be most entertaining lecturer at carleton.
This class shows why you and everyone you know is biased and hypocritical. Davies does a good job at explaining why.
By far my favourite class I've ever taken because of him. He makes lectures super interesting and easy to follow. Only had 1 paper and 4 quizzes (lowest mark is dropped). The paper is VERY easy but the quizzes are pretty hard. As long as you pay attention and take notes in the lectures you'll do great
His lectures are awesome! He finds a way to make the material interesting and easy to understand. He is also hilarious. However his test are a pain(They're all online) . The time limit is stressful and the questions are Barely related to the course. Not to mention the test crash all the time.
Lectures were good, but everything else was awful. Zero communication. Didn't respond to emails all term, and his test system kept crashing with no attempts at resolving the issues whatsoever. If you need this mark, don't take the course. You lose marks because of this professor's lack of communication.
Super easy class. Go to class or watch the online lectures (and take notes!) and you'll be fine. Prof. Davies is funny, entertaining, and smart, but he talks quite fast
Jim is great. He is really funny, and amazing at giving lectures. I had him for Mysteries of the Mind (GCSG 1001) and it was by far my most interesting class. He is fair and always available for help. I would definitely recommend him as a prof. He is the most intelligent, interesting man I have met. If you put in the work, you will do well.
Great guy from the few conversations I'd had. Interesting lectures, never a drag to go to Mysteries of the Mind. Genuinely cares about his students, and making the work they do meaningful, check his TEDxOttawa talk "Don't Waste Student Work" should tell you all you need and more. Highly Recommended.
Never makes class boring with his many examples. Also funny and relatable to students.
I truly did not enjoy his teaching. He seemed to be pretty stuck up when answering questions from students, his answers were never truly clear. His lectures as well seem to be very unorganized and contain a lot of useless information. He, however, is a fun energetic person. But his teaching style is not too great.
Really nice guy, and is super funny and approachable. However all evaluations were tests and taken online. Additionally, all his test are cumulative which makes things even tougher. I would not recommend this class to anyone with bad studying habits. Tests are also given a time limit of 36 minutes for 30 questions which is extremely stressful.
Hes a really nice prof and all. I took his online class and watched the VOD section. But the online notes were ALL out of order, and his exams are nothing like the online notes. I honestly felt like i was being tested on a subject ive never known. His quiz questions are really hard to make sense of amd barely gives you time to answer.
Online tests were stressful but not impossible. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but showing up helps with getting examples that he uses on the quizzes. Many papers graded unfairly by one TA, other TA was a very easy marker. A good elective for students interested in cognitive science, but don't underestimate it!
Hilarious prof! This class is pretty easy if you go to the lectures. Although the quizzes are cumulative they are online which makes them open book. Also, he drops your lowest quiz mark which can really help. Interesting lectures! Would recommend.
The man is interesting to listen to, caring, entertaining, and honestly a great choice to run the first year seminar. The course was content light, but still presented in an interesting way. Note organization was lackluster, but the course was easy enough and lectures clear enough that it did not matter really. Good choice for first year.
Jim Davies is a fanominal lecturer who bring like to each and every topic. Test are open book and online, however that doesn't mean they are easy. Dr. Davies is clearly dedicated to his students and it shows, especially with his willingness to give extra credits ;) I highly recommend his lecture, as well as his book.
Loved this class as a first-year student! A very nice break from other dry lectures from other classes. I've always heard nothing but great things about Davies- would definitely recommend! Take proper notes, pay attention, and you'll do fine!
Amazing prof! Loved him so much. Quizzes are online and open book and super easy! easy credit for sure
One of the best lecturers ever, and he makes every subject interesting. However, the course is weirdly put together, some of the quizzes have questions on things from future lectures, and it honestly feels like a game of chance whether you'll do well. When you only have around a minute or two for each question, even if you study it can be hard
Jim is the absolute best. His lectures were super interesting and often funny, he's very passionate about what he's teaching and it shows. He's an awesome professor and the material isn't too difficult if you stay on top of lectures and take notes on what he says. 100000/10 would recommend!
Absolutely loved this class, Jim is super interesting and animated which makes the lectures enjoyable. I recommend registering in the on-demand section because he talks fast & it was beneficial to pause and rewind lectures. Super easy material especially if you've already taken PSYC1001 & 1002, developmental psych & ethics courses
Jim Davies is an amazing lecturer, and I would definitely recommend him, but the course is the problem. It feels like it is on a complete disconnect from the lectures, as there is 4 quizzes, and some of the questions on them I know were not in any lectures, or were very briefly mentioned, and when you finish you can't review your grades to improve
Gotta watch/attend lectures. No textbook so its a light course, no readings that you're tested on. Some of the concepts are pretty tough to grasp but he does a good job of explaining them.
Excellent lecturer, very animated, passionate and makes the class interesting. There are readings assigned to each class that you can use if you need more depth on a subject, however he explains the concepts very well on his own. I'd say the paper is mostly used as a grade booster so don't let that deter you from this class, definitely recommend!
Mixed feelings about Jim. His lectures are excellent, he is very clear and animated. Makes lectures very interesting and easy to understand. However, can come off as very condescending when answering student questions, almost as if he looks down on you for asking for clarity. Very important to have good notes in this class!
hes amazing!
super chill dude, easy marks but also a good introductory course for cognitive science.
for a lot of classes i left thinking "what was the point of that?/how is that related to the class?". a lot of lectures felt pointless. there are 5 quizzes each one worth 20% all open book and cumulative. i attended class and then for quizzes i wouldn't study and just search up the info in the ppts. it worked out pretty well for me.
Horrible professor. The quizzes are unnecessarily hard even if you study all day. They also crash because over 1000 people are trying to access it at the same time and he will not accommodate his own mistakes. Avoid this class at all costs!
I took this class as an elective and it's one of my favourites- he's a really great prof and keeps his lectures interesting. If you take good notes and show up you'll be fine. Quizzes are open book and you could just use your notes but it's a lot easier and less stressful if you just take the time to study.
this guy is like an hour long vsauce video 10/10 would reccomend
You will be marked on 4 online quizzes seems great except for the fact the servers crash, he isn't aware of the formatting issues (the check button), very condescending when answering questions and emails. The quizzes being should be more carefully executed and monitored so students can do our best. The errors do affect our grades and cause stress!
Good course, good prof, relatively easy A. Great engaging lectures. 4 quizzes (open book) + 1 book that you have to read and then write a short essay relating info from the book to lecture. He had a guest lecturer from the Writing Centre explain how to write the essay properly. If you pay attention to the grading rubric, you will be fine.
Jim Davies is a good professor. He teaches well. He is a very nice person. He does not host office hours so you need to make an appointment to see him but at least he responds to forums and e-mails. The quizzes were disorganized and a bit unprepared. There was one quiz that says no need to use the checkbox and I had to use the checkbox!
Hilarious prof. Lectures are always interesting even if the content isn't. Readings are optional as he doesn't test on them. Quizzes are easy if you take notes and keep the information fresh in your head, there's also no big papers or assignments either. Highly recommend this course as an elective
Very passionate and easy to learn from, took this class just to fill my schedule but he definitely sparked my interest in further learning about cognitive science which I never expected going into this class
Prof Davies was a great instructor. He was very engaging and knowledgeable. I loved the course and would recommend it to anyone even the slightest bit interested in cogsci. Quizzes are fair and if you put the work in (and actually read the book you chose) you can ace the essay! He always made me laugh with his love for bubble tea and ocelots.
He gives good lectures, but speak to him after class he is not very polite. There is 4 online quizzes you have to do in this class worth 20% which is not bad. However, he makes them difficult and has a time limit which makes it stressful.
Jim was cool, I never spoke to him one on one though. The quizzes are very easy, but it would be nice to be able to review them. I haven't taken a science course since 2013 and I did pretty well in this class, so I think it'd be easy for most people to get a decent grade. His lectures were easy to watch as he actually engages people.
Jim is a fantastic lecturer. The content of the course is interesting and his grading criteria is composed of 4 online MC quizzes and an essay each worth 20%. If you are looking for an elective that is fun and easy, this is the go-to course. However, do study for the quizzes as the questions are not straightforward definitions.
Jim was a great professor. His lectures were intriguing and he always made them interesting (which is important!!!). The quizzes you must study for to get a good grade which is understandable. Easy essay to boost your mark with very clear grading criteria. Overall would definitely recommend and take again :) Thank you Jim for being great!
I took cog sci as an elective, and I am so happy I did. Jim was one of the most entertaining professors I've had at Carleton within 3 years of being here. He's a great professor- hilarious, respected, and amusing. You could really tell he has a passion for cognitive science as it is shown clearly by how he teaches. Short slides, fair quizzes.
This course is sort of a rite-of-passage at Carleton, most students have taken it at some point. Easy if you watch lectures and take solid notes. He does quizzes that are based off exactly what he dictates in class, so pay attention. Sometimes certain questions were on the quiz that weren't covered but that's how it is sometimes.
Beware of abstract question on tests. If you can critically think with the course content, you will do just fine.
Jim Davies is incredibly entertaining when giving lectures. It makes it much easier to stay focused and absorb the information. That being said, a lot of the tests and quizzes take questions directly from examples he gives during the lectures that are NOT on the PowerPoint slides. If you miss the lectures, you won't know the answers.
Prof. Davies' lectures are really interesting and entertaining. The quizzes are worth 20%, but realistically as long as you have watched the lectures (and take notes about the stuff that isn't in the slides) and have the slides available during the tests you'll be fine. The essay is a decent amount of work but it's only about 1000 words.
THE QUZZES! I read that it was bird course and took it since its also interesting. the course is split in 4 quizzes and 1 essay. I got a 94 on the essay as it was honestly easy with loads of time. the issue are the quizzes. instead of a normal multiple choices, its which fits best when 2 of the options can be argued. each ta has 100+ kids
Davies is amazing. Each lecture is interesting, and Davies does a great job of explaining the concepts. The class composes of 4 multiple choice quizzes and a paper, each worth 20%. The quizzes are fair but tricky as the questions are what he says in class, not on slides. The paper is marked really easy. He gives 4% extra credit for workshops.
The class consisted of one essay and four quizzes each worth 20%. The essay was easy (I got a 95%) but as far as the quizzes I found them awful! It has barely anything pertaining the online lectures so my notes did not help and there was so many questions where there could be more than one right answer.
Every lecture was pre-recorded from the year before and I was never really in contact with prof Davies at any point (understandable, the class is large). The course content was interesting but the quizzes had questions that were not taught in class. The tests are based off things Davies says in his lectures, not the slides so be careful!
Such interesting course content taught with passion by Dr. Davies. Highly recommend it, it was easy to pay attention which made it easy to do well. It was fully online with 3 hours of video lectures to watch per week. 4 Quizzes, one essay.
Genuinely cares about his students and wants them all to do well! I recommend this course to everyone I know.
I really enjoyed this class and the material that was presented. Lectures are interesting so it made it easier to do well. I got a B on my first quiz but all A's on quizzes 2 and 3, on the essay and the exam. My advice would be take good notes and make sure to listen to what the prof says in his lectures rather than the slides!
Prof Davies is a great prof and I really enjoyed his lectures. He is very funny and relatable, in terms of quizzes they were pretty hard considering the information tested is only on things he says in class not the slides.
Prof. Davies is awesome, really glad I chose to take CGSC1001. If you're looking for a great bird course where you'll actually learn cool stuff, take this.
I would take a bullet for JImmy D. This man can have my first newborn if he wanted it. I would fail his class just so I could take it again if I could.
Although this class was only taught through pre-recorded lectures, it still managed to be my favourite class of the semester. He is a great lecturer and I found the course content to be very engaging and useful even though I'm not a CogSci major myself. Quizzes can be tough, but nothing crazy. Take this class!
if you want to take this as a bird course STAY AWAY. the quizzes are the hardest things i have ever done in my life - the questions are so unreasonable and asks extremely specific things that he briefly mentions in lectures, cant go back and change your answers and you only have 36 minutes to do it. so seriously stay away and don't hurt your gpa..
Jim Davies was a really entertaining prof. All of the quizzes were based off of lectures instead of the slide material which made it a little difficult but if you pay attention during lectures and take good notes its not unreasonable.
Interesting course but HUGE disconnect between the quiz questions and class content. There is no textbook so quizzes are based on what prof says which is often just the main point with few specifics. Quiz questions are ridiculously detailed and need to be updated as they are not aligning with the pre-recorded lectures. Happy to be done!
Lecture material felt repetitive at times but still was one of the most interesting classes I have taken. No textbook so you have to go to class if you want to do well on the quizzes that make up most of your grade.
Very solid professor! The lectures are interesting, although not very in depth. You're graded on 4 quizzes and a short essay, so it's easy to do well, just make sure you take good notes and pay attention during lecture. Overall a great class!
You better have the best listening ears during the lectures and write away until your fingers start bleeding. You have to have every source of information that he ever discusses memorized in your head. Also, each quiz continues on information previously learned, so the 3rd quiz can contain old irrelevant questions from the first lectures.
Cant review quizzes, cant go back a question during quiz, 30 questions, 36 minutes. Quizzes you on brief examples used in lecture instead of the slides so pay attention to what he says instead of the slides. Easy essay, do first one. Will not round up your mark even if its 0.2%. Do the bonus marks cuz they can help you reach the next grade level.
Really funny, interacts with students on discord, and his lectures are amazing & super fun. A lot of people seem to be upset with the quizzes but I did pretty well on them with minimal studying and just taking notes during lectures. I'm really upset about the way my essay was graded but that's the TA's fault... I loved taking this course overall.
One of the best profs at Carleton, super hilarious and makes lectures super interesting
This class is enjoyable in a pop-psychology way, and actually convinced me to change my major to Cogsci. That being said, it's kind of tasteless how he uses it to shill his book. Also, this guy seems to think VERY HIGHLY of himself, so much so that it comes off in almost every single lecture. Bearable, but a little annoying. Class itself was easy.
The quiz questions are too specific. They don't test you on the concept (which is what you should be learning), but more on what you remember him exactly saying in the lectures. I resorted to transcribing every word he said instead of the main points and got a lot of answers to questions on the quiz's for this reason alone. Lazy teaching.
Loved his class, he makes a lot of jokes and references so we can understand better but the material itself and quizzes are not to be taken too lightly
THIS IS NOT A BIRD CLASS! People that are passing are NOT "studying" if yk what I mean. This class is extremely hard, the lectures are great but the quizzes are so confusing. The options similar it will be like: What colour is an apple? Red, Green, Yellow. Oh and 3 of the quizzes had questions nobody seen before. TAS had to correct it.
There are 4 deadline options to do an essay/term paper. If anything happens, if your sick, in the hospital the prof does not care because he gave you 4 different deadlines. Do NOT do the essay due before the semester ends because if ANYTHING Happens they do not care.
This "Bird class" ruined a lot of students GPA. Run away, take another course!
Honestly, Dr. Davies is a relatively nice professor but this class did end up being too difficult for me. If you are taking this class as an elective or a bird class, I'd suggest that you think twice because the class is not as easy as it may seem. The quizzes were fair, but I would prefer that the time limit be extended slightly to about 40 mins.
Funny, lighthearted, genuinely engaging and interesting lecturer, class was extremely easy and he schedules things so you've got options with your deadlines, if one time doesn't work for you, take option B. An absolute pleasure.
His quizzes are nothing on the lectures.
- Prerecorded lectures from before Covid, pretty interesting and funny guy. - Quizzes are very easy if you just use the notes that are provided in the syllabus. - Essay was graded quite easily if you choose the last book, The Organized Mind - Quizzes are cumulative, so you need to be on top of old content.
As you can see from the ratings, it's a hit or miss. Depends a lot on the TAs too since they are the ones marking. The professor kind of seemed like he did not exist within the class, like all the meetings hours are with TAs, most of the communication is through them, the classes are recorded from two years ago. Not bad per se, but different.
His class is not to be taken lightly, but i came out of it with a much more realistic knowledge about the world. I recommend it to everyone i know!!!
his tests were messed up and had questions that werent even on the lectures. this happened for two quizzes, and the TAs had to regrade all quizzes because of this. his lectures are entertaining but the format and overall handling of the online class is terrible.
Personally I found the class very boring and hard. The test questions were very challenging. If you are going to take this class be ready to put in the work.
Prof Davies is a great lecturer. His course consisted of 1 paper based on either 1 of 3 books that you get to pick, or a term paper for the entire course. As well there were 4 tests (the 4th being the final exam) in which you had 36min to answer 30 M/C questions. All questions came directly from his lectures. Study hard and attend class to pass!
Prof Davies' class was very interesting and I found I learned a lot. Quiz times were rough as I had to take mine at 6 am on Mondays due to being busy on the other time slot. But the course material and the way it was presented was all very well done, and kept me engaged.
Skip class? You won't pass! - 4 quizzes (final included) 36 min each (20%) - An essay or term paper (20%) most would agree is graded easily - Make sure to note down all examples he gives in lecs since they will likely be on the quizzes - TAs aren't really helpful, and the prof never interacts with the online class (in person is prob better)
Super rude when trying to contact him, not flexible or understanding.
Loved his lectures I am not a CogSci student or a Psychology student and I absolutely found this class fun and entertaining. Pay attention, study with Anki flashcards and take notes. It isn't an easy class but he is so entertaining and a great professor who makes learning fun! If he was a Prof in my major I would take a class with him again
A lot of the content in this class was very interesting and applicable to the real world. Quizzes were relatively easy but make sure that you pay good attention in class and take notes on the small things that don't seem important because often those are questions that come up on quizzes.
Very average professor, not great not horrible. Keep in mind I didn't really enjoy the course so I could be the problem.
Davies isn't a bad prof. I just found that as an online asynchronous class his lectures were very long and you have to write down every detail or you wont do well on tests. I really enjoyed the book I had to read for his course and he liked to teach using movie examples. I would be careful with this course because you have to work hard and study.
Keeps the content interesting, and uses relatable examples. Love how many extra videos are included in the power points. You need to watch lectures because there is content not in slides that makes its way into tests. Loved the book I read for my assignment although I didn't do great on the assignment. Great prof, great & interesting class!
Such an amazing guy in general. Very entertaining to listen to, my friends who don't take the course show up all the time. Fairly easy marking on the essay (20%) with a good TA. The other tests (4x20%) are all open book multiple choice but very detailed notes because he will ask extremely specific things that are hard to google. Do recommend.
Amazing professor. Made lectures fun and engaging and course content was very interesting. Multiple choice quizzes were not easy and some questions that had words he never mentioned, but fair for online and open book. However I was still able to get in the 90s on the quizzes. There are only 3 options per question. Easy 4% extra credit.
I think the guy himself is a good prof. He's engaging and funny. But please don't take this class as a bird course. I don't know why everyone says it is, it's a completely bull assumption. You have to keep track of EVERY. SINGLE. LITTLE. detail in the lecture to do well. If you don't deal well with memorization based classes DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
Professor Davies is super intelligible. However, this course is overrated. 1000+ students, nobody cares how you do. you can never talk to prof outside class. Exam questions are sometimes very vague but it is an online exam so you have to blindly choose an answer. All 4 exams are accumulative but get ready for questions from future lectures too.
Very interesting lectures but you have to listen carefully as some of the quiz questions are on stuff that's not in the notes and most questions are difficult to google. I don't know if I would call this a bird course cause while it's very easy to get 70s or low 80s, anything higher requires a decent amount of effort.
Don't listen to other negative reviews and ones saying it is a hard class. I did not study once for this class. I watched the lectures, made notes, and that was enough to get a 96% plus 4% for a grade of 100%. The lectures are also very interesting and I learned a lot from this course that applies to our daily lives. I definitely recommend it.
Prof. Davies was a pleasure to have for the introductory cog. science course (Mysteries of the Mind). He keeps his lectures interesting and informing and you'll always learn something new that could be relevant to you. His quizzes are fairly easy and straightforward. TAs can be really rough with grading the essay, though, so be careful of that.
Most of what he did not put on the slides during lectures was on tests, questions were complicated had no compassion when emailing him.The study guide given for test would not line up with the material on the test. As if he would expect you to read his mind.Felt as though time was spent studying useless information that was not applicable to exams.
4 online mc quizzes which are worth 20% each and an essay worth 20%. Jim Davies is an amazing lecturer, and his course material interesting and relevant to daily life. Make sure to take good notes about everything he says, as very obscure things will be on quizzes. Difficulty can range a lot as q's are randomized. The essay is free with most TA's.
CGSC1001 is def light in terms of workload. 4 quizzes x 20% and an essay/paper worth 20%. Also a chance to get up to a 4% bonus towards your grade from participating in SONA studies. I find Jim to be a good lecturer, a quirky guy. My only criticism is the test bank for the quizzes. Very randomized but they're fine as long as you watch the lectures.
This course was very interesting and fairly easy, with 4 tests altogether including the final exam and one essay that was about 1000 words. All test information was from the lecture so if you watch them you should be fine. The essay was very easy, easier than the tests.
Amazing class if you're looking for easy an credit course and a genuinely interesting class. He makes the material easy to grasp and keeps the lectures interesting. Course is graded off of 4 quizzes and an essay.
Jim Davies is an amazing professor! I took this class over a year ago, and It could've been the content, but his classes were extremely engaging. The topics covered are still conversation starters and taught me tools I use to this day to study. This class is better than PYSC 1001.
He was an inspirational Professor. You always learned something new and interesting in every lecture. The book assignment wasn't too tough, given that you've actually read the book and payed attention to the lectures. However be prepared to pay attention to every small little thing he discusses in class because you could be quizzed on it.
Professor Davies is funny, presents interesting content, and grades very fairly. Some of his tests repeat questions from previous tests. His course content, quizzes, and essays are presented and graded very fairly.
Course was really interesting and easy, only complaint is that a lot of it seemed more like a pop psych course in that it seems like it was a huge variety of interesting facts although not delved into enough that you could master them.
Very interesting and engaging lectures, extremely funny and great storytelling. Grades were fairly distributed with four quizzes and an essay. However, some of the questions on the quizzes did not match the course content whatsoever or about things yet to be learned. Overall, a fascinating course taught by an equally fascinating man. Must take!
Professor Davies is super engaging. I found that I rarely lost attention during the lectures. He tries to make the content relevant to our daily lives which is nice. His tests tend to ask extremely specific questions from lecture content which it seems impossible to write down all of, but overall it's an easy class and didn't require much effort.
Tests are all online, essay is easy.
Absolutely the best professor at Carleton University.
There are no textbooks. You do have to read 1 of 3 actual books, but the books are all interesting. This prof is amazing, and CGCS and Natural History are 100% the most fun courses at Carleton. There are online lectures if you miss lectures too, and the material is shockingly useful in everyday life. I love you Jim Davies!
Jim Davies' lectures never fail to keep me interested. He is an incredibly engaging person and I always try to make his lectures if I'm able to. If you don't want to go, or can't go, he has his lecture slides and his lecture videos online so you'll never miss out on information. I highly recommend his class.
Very informative professor. However, if you miss ONE sentence from his lecture, you are screwed in the quizzes he assigns.
Professor Jim Davies is an excellent prof, his lectures are very entertaining and he makes what you're learning pretty easy to understand. Though you have to make sure to pay attention to the little details he says otherwise it could mess you up on the quizzes which is a bit of a bummer. But, he also posts the lectures online. Good prof 9.5/10.
Davies is an odd but fun prof! Lectures can get pretty entertaining, he's very friendly but not very caring with students, he just teaches this one class and does research I think. You might even spot him on his funky bike outside! Lectures are online too if you miss one, but take good notes, any random sentence from lecture could be on the tests.
Learned a ton. It wasn't a super easy A+, but if you put the work in you should do well. I took detailed lecture notes and that helped significantly with the quizzes. They are cumulative so you might see the same questions (ex: a question on quiz 1 could reappear on quiz 2). Essay was marked a little too hard IMO - don't leave it last minute!!
Course had 4 online quizzes and one short essay. No exam. Most quiz questions could be figured out with common sense. There were instances where questions didnt reflect lecture material, but its probably because the same question bank is reused every year. Would recommend for an easy elective.
Jim Davies is a great guy, I really enjoyed his class. Lecture videos are very well done and posted on brightspace so that you can look back and watch them at any point. Gives great explanations with great examples to help students understand.
Easy class. Multiple choice quizzes which is straight forward. I only read 80 pages of my book but still got a 95 on the term paper.
easy A+
I was in the online section, but the recorded lectures are decently engaging and interesting to listen to. Quizzes are all based off of what he says in the lecture, but not what is on the slides. Essay assignment is very good and encourages students to practice writing in a university setting.
Dr. Davies was hands down the funniest prof, and his lectures are never boring. Make sure to pay attention to what he says, because his slides only give you bullet points of what he will say, and quiz questions come 90% of the time from things he says in class. Quiz questions are also situational so dont try to cheat, you wont be able to lol
Very easy to do well in his class. The written assignment did not require much work. You only need to watch lectures to ace the quizzes.
Jim is a very fun and interesting professor, going into very fine detail and explaining complex topics excellently. The course structure was weird, having 5 quizzes being worth your entire grade, which is either a relief or a curse depending on the person. Either this is the easiest class ever or you'll be questioning everything you think you know.
This man is honestly one of the best professors on the campus. He is fantastic at simplifying more complex topics and relating them to daily life. all of his material is available on brightspace. He is very engaging and entertaining in lectures, answers questions, and info regarding his TAs are clear. I would recommend anyone to take this class.
The professor is so engaging but please do not take mysteries of the mind thinking you wont have to do anything. Some might found it easy but I found its easy to fall behind and underestimate the cumulative quizzes
If you take this class and plan to slack DONT lol. It will come back to bite you. And plus you won't get as much out of the class, because the information is actually super interesting and will cause you to question everything you think you know. Dr. Davies' lectures were always entertaining and he is so effortlessly funny.
This class was absolutely atrocious. I was a A+ student in high school and a stem girlie, like she was smart. The quizzes were so difficult and often failed to represent lecture material or readings. I did all the readings and lectures but still when I opened the quiz each time I had no choice but to laugh. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.
...As a second yr student who took this as a bird course, this class was hard lol. You literally have to write every single word from his lectures and his book as well. I only did good because of studocs (some amazing people put the quiz questions & answers shhh). Otherwise I would have completely failed this course lol. NOT a bird course!
Very test heavy. The lectures are very interesting (coming from a CS student). There are four quizzes, 30 questions each, 36min. Each quiz is worth 25% of your final mark. The quizzes are CUMULATIVE, which means you will see material covered on quiz 1 on quiz 2, quiz 3, and so on. I got away with watching all lectures thhe night before a quiz lol..
Fun prof and interesting lectures. Took this course because I was told it was a "bird" course. The problem was the extremely high stakes quizzes (4 of them) with plenty of confusing questions. Ctrl f won't work in your notes and chatgpt won't get questions right. While you can study, a lot of your grade may be based on luck.
The course was alright. Nothing to really hate, but also nothing to really love. I recommend you watch the lectures and take notes on what he says.
Jim Davies is an amazing prof! He's interesting, and you can tell he's interested in the course content. It's marked by 4 cumulative tests (each worth 25%), all open book. In order to do good in the class, you have to quite literally take note of everything he says from the lecture. Took me hours to take notes, so be ready for that.
If you take his online course, you have to be very independent. There is no structure or announcements and you have to constantly refer to the syllabus. Marks are from 4 tests that are pretty difficult and SONA extra credits are hard to find. Tests were also always at 7pm on a Friday or you could opt to do it at 6am on a Monday. Overall, not great.
Took his online class. The material/readings feel long but are interesting. Tests and the exam are multiple choice and are about a minute per question. Loved his enthusiasm. Must be on schedule and cannot fall behind.
easy class that does not take much of your time if you take the asynchronous one!
lectures are good but the tests are really hard. 4 tests all open book multiple choice. on the discord we had a document where a bunch of student notes were put into, that helped a lot. but expect to need to prepare for these tests
Lectures are engaging, funny, enjoyable and make you think! You can tell he really cares about Cognitive Science. Tests are open book and online, I found the material really intuitive and accessible. He also always offers two dates to do the quiz. No formal textbook, but you will need to read his novel for the tests.
Very boring class. Davies doesn't have much to say about anything.
I 100% recommend this class if you want to boost your average. I will say that his quizzes aren't the easiest and that some questions are tricky but I have a hard time believing anyone could fail his class.
Davies was a sick prof! Super enthusiastic about cogsci, took his class last year and came back to leave a lovely review. Be sure to watch all lectures and take detailed notes as he's not super attentive over emails but quite helpful in office hours. The key to obtain a good grade is your notes! Bird course, easy A+ as long as you put in the work.
Jim Davies has a bit of an ego, and it shows. He makes you buy his textbook, and most of the content is just him talking about himself and his own (unsupported) theories. Lectures are a bit better, but still boring. I paid little attention and still finished with an A+. But beware of the quizzes. They are intentionally deceptive (and rather unfair)
Very interesting lectures, and Dr. Davies clearly knows the field of cognitive science very well. His quizzes are all open book, and you can do well if you take detailed notes in his lectures, as he does require you to pay close attention to what he talks about. All the lecture videos are posted for studying or if you miss a class.
Lectures were entertaining and engaging, course is assesed by 4 online open book quizzes weighted 25% each along with a 4% SONA bonus. A good grade is easy to atain as long as you pay attention to the lectures and take good notes.
Loved the course so much it made me reconsider whether or not I should change my degree to cog sci.
This is an easy class and the beginning was interesting. However, towards the end it felt like he was running out of topics, it felt a bit useless. Book is not interesting- very repetitive. Easy elective to take. I liked that there was just quizzes online. Wouldn't take again though.
If you don't write every word said in the lecture, you won't succeed. He also lied and said you don't need to read his book but if you don't then you will fail the class. Very lazy marking scheme set up to fail you. Has a big ego and no clue what he's talking about
Took his online version of CGSC 1001 so I've never encountered him in person but the lectures were extremely interesting and his examples help me significantly understand concepts better. You are also provided with all of the slides which comes in handy for studying, he was pretty funny and fairly relatable which made the lectures enjoyable.
As online class, this includes online lectures to watch and online quizzes, and then a final exam in person. The grading is crazy, with 3 online quizzes worth 10% each, and a final being worth 70%, which is CRAY, especially since even after watching all the lectures, I don't know half of the quiz questions. His book is also not written well!
quizzes are worth 10% each while exam is worth 70%, I dont even think thats LEGAL!! I understand thats to prevent the use of AI but if it bothered you that much then why teach an online course in 2025.
Bad prof, makes his final 70% and makes us read his book. Doesn't prepare his students well for the final.
No matter how easy the material is, he somehow manages to overcomplicate everything, and there never seems to be a right answer. Don't take any of his classes unless the quizzes are online and you have lots of time to do it, not 90 minutes for a 100-question final and 36 for 36 questions for a midterm!!!!!!!!! Terrible overall
Lectures are alright but he pulls quiz questions out of his ass and his book that he makes you read is very mid.
He lied and said we didn't need to read his book when most quiz questions were from it. 3 quizzes worth 10% each and a final exam worth 70%. He made the exam be 90 minutes with 100 questions, giving less than a minute per question.this exam is the entire course. He pulls quiz questions out of nowhere, majority of his class thinks they're gonna fail
90 minutes and 100 questions for final exam that is worth 70 percent. The quizzes are in total worth 30 percent. He also pulls quiz questions out of nowhere. Terrible class and not worth taking
Took this class because I thought it would be a bird course- I was wrong. The grade make-up is 3 online, open book quizzes worth 10% each and a 70% final exam covering every.single.lecture and 3 chapters of his book. This course seems like it was deisgned to fail students. I have so much I want to say but so few characters. In short: Run.
Studying for this class has genuinely drained the life from me. In his lectures, he drones on about the same few points and sprinkles a little bit of relevant material. He also almost always rushes through the content but still manages to talk for an hour and a half. Also talks about himself more than anything else.
When taking this class, I thought it would be an easy, light bird course, NO. It is not an easy class. The exam is worth 70% of your final grade, covering over 23 lectures plus 3 chapters of his book, which makes 0 sense. How was this even passed?? Lectures are old, dating back to 2019, which was 6 YEARS AGO. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
Do not take this class!!!!!. Horrible teacher, and wants to see you fail in life. The exam is worth 70% and did not tell his students on what is it about, and the lecture videos DO NOT HELP. Run from this class.
run. just run.
Davies has the most insane ego out of every professor I have ever met. His book is terrible. The final is worth 70%. Test questions suck. Every lecture he drones on about the same 3 stories, all about his wife, ex-girlfriends, sex dreams, and other personal things I did not need to know. The content is interesting, but NOT when he's teaching it.
The lectures are fascinating and the teacher is funny, I personally just have an extremely hard time learning this material. The quizzes are difficult (to me). The exam is worth 70% which is insane. I feel like you have to be a freak of nature to do well. I don't have the brain for this.
STRESSFUL - 3 quizzes worth 10% each and a final that is worth 70% of your grade. - Questions are more complicated then how he explains them in class - Lots of content to memorize for exam - Quizzes are 30 questions in 36 mins - Is not lenient AT ALL - Grade will drop severely during exam if not careful - 50% plus needed on exam to pass course
If you're reading this, it's too late. RUN
If you are considering taking this class, RUN! All the good ratings on here were before he changed a lot of things, like instead of having a final exam 30 %, he made the final exam 70 %. I took this class online and the exam was in person. I should have dropped this class at the beginning. Please, for your peace and health, don't take this class.
All of the bad ratings are pre exam the exam is fine the quizzes are not but they are only worth 30% so you will be fine most likely
Class contains some pretty fun material to learn, however the 70% final exam is rough. No matter how many students claim it to be "not a big deal", making a bunch of first years start their university exams with a 70% weighted final (failing means an instant course fail, regardless of prior grades) seems a little cruel.
Avoid this course at all costs. 70% final for a useless class. The quizzes DO NOT prepare you for the final, same with the lectures. Everything is multiple choice but no matter how much you know the content you will still end up guessing your answers and not applying anything you learned. Strange prof with stranger comments in class. 0/10 experience
No matter what anyone says, a 70% must pass exam in a first-year university class is brutal. I took this course cause my friends did last term and all got easy A's due to the quizzes being online. This class was only supposed to be an elective grade booster, but I spent the most time on it instead, and now it's going to tank my GPA. Useless!!!
In my 5th yr & took this because I needed a 1st yr elective...Just to have a must pass 70% final? In my 5 years here I have never experienced this. It was also online async w a final in person on Monday @ 9am, makes no sense. This was the only reason I had to come back to Ottawa as I was finishing my last classes online (nothing else was in person)
The 70% final is brutal, way too much material to learn (no matter how much you study). I went to every class, took thorough notes, and got A's on quizzes, but the new testing format is so hard I'm not even sure I passed the exam (my first ever uni exam). You can just use the slides but in class he adds extra NEEDED (to pass) info. Prof was funny.
Don't be fooled by all the other reviews from years ago. AI is taking over the education system and Jim has decided to take it out on his students. 70% final exam that you must pass to pass the class as a first year elective, holy smokes. If you have this class drop it unless you have an elephant brain!!!!!!
DO NOT take this course. Absolutely brutal for a first-year filler course. The 70% final sucked the soul out of me. NO EXAM REVIEW for a 70% final. EVIL and CRUEL. He must've gone through a villain arch because his class is NOT like what the old reviews say. I think he took his anger of getting his precious bike stolen out on us. STAY AWAY!
Besides the fact his final is worth 70%, he's overall a pretty decent guy and explains concepts really well. Im actually extremely surprised I even passed. I dont know where he even comes up with the question he puts on the test? Half of them were on robots and ai so maybe study that? Some from his book which, yeah I fear that says enough abt him.
My hero, James
Extremely lecture heavy. Quizzes are 10% each, 30 questions and you have 36 minutes which isn't too bad. The exam was 90 mins for 100 questions, worth 70%!!!!! of your final grade, and is a must pass or fail. If you're not required to take this class, DO NOT TAKE IT. Made us buy a book, however the exam had 5 maybe questions based from his book.
Literally nothing else matters in this class but the final. If you don't pass the final you fail the class no matter your grades on your quizzes, its actually ridiculous.
Change the syllabus at the beginning of the semester to a ridiculous 70 % final and 3 10% quizzes DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS YOUR GRADES WILL SUFFER
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS TEACHER SWITCHED SYLLABUS LAST MINUTE 70% FINAL AND 3 10% QUIZZES YOUR GRADES WILL SUFFER DON'T TAKE
Took this because I thought it would be easy, it wasn't. Textbook is not mandatory as there was barely anything tested on it. I actually found the lectures interesting but the 70% final did not need to be worth that much.
The final exam is worth 70% of your grade. If you fail it, you fail the class, even if your overall grade is above 50%. The questions are extremely unpredictable, often coming from random facts mentioned in lectures. Definitely wish I never took this class, run before its to late.
3 quizzes worth 10% each, which were ok, but the 70% final exam is abysmal. The questions had to be pulled from limbo or something because I couldn't make heads or tails of half of them. No exam review or access to previously written tests for review. I have never in my 16 years of schooling seen weighing this absurd. Funny guy, but not my fav.
I'm not sure why people are complaining. The 70% final is harsh, but if you watch the lectures & study, you'll be fine. The 3 open web quizzes are also fairly easy, though the questions can be a bit abstract (again, watching lectures will help). This is definitely still a bird course so long as you watch lectures & put some effort into studying.
I don't care what anyone says, 70% for a first year final exam should not aloud and is absolutely brutal. 25% of the class failed with a total of 1300 students. I find what he says doesn't even make any sense and is absolutely boring, and I attended every lecture. This class made me really hate cogsci and made me want to end it ngl
This year of 2025, Jim Davies changed his exam to in person and 70 percent. Our class average was 61.8%. Nothing makes sense 99% of the time. Worst professor in cog sci DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You think its a grade booster and fun, and interetsting, thats what we thought aswell. Absolultely worst marker, professor, RUN THE OTHER WAY!!
a good portion of the class (25%) failed the final exam worth 70 percent and effectively failed the entire class because of it regardless of their grade going into the exam. this class is primarily focused on cog sci from Davies' standpoint which is ridiculous. would not recommend. definitely NOT a bird course.
Jim Davies is a smart professor and his course is straightforward, interesting, and informative. His grade scheme was outlined the very first day of lectures, so don't listen to the complaints. The final exam was easier than the quizzes, you just have to study the lecture slides and pay attention to do well.
HE SUCKS. THE LECTURES MAKE NO SENSE. DON'T EVEN BOTHER ATTENDING. HE MADE MY LOVE FOR COGNITIVE SCIENCE DISAPPEAR. 70% EXAM, 3 10% QUIZZES AND YOU CAN'T EVEN LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. NEVER TAKE THE CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. AND EVEN IF YOU DO, DON'T, CHANGE YOUR MAJOR.
His lectures was very un-interesting and very much not engaging. For the evaluations, he provides 3 online quizes worth 10% each through out the semester, then bam a 70% exam. Credit where credits due, it was clear that the exam was worth 70%, but he provides absolutely zero support for exam review, and picked the literal earliest slot for exams.
Evil evil egoistical man. Run, run as far as you can
I PROMISE you it's not that bad. He was genuinely a really engaging and interesting professor; his lectures are some of the few I enjoyed from my first semester, and as long as you have a genuine interest (even if it's small), you'll enjoy the course. The only problem is the grading scheme, but the exam isn't even hard, just care and you'll pass.
Really great guy! The online tests and exam were very relevant to the course and marked fairly, and the final exam wasn't worth that much so it took a lot of stress off of me. Highly recommend!
Honestly, there's some cray cray people trying to sabotage y'all into still taking this course, my advice, don't take the course. There's no point in draining yourself mentally over the 70% final, when there's so many other electives to choose from instead. Take the class if you like cognitive science A LOT and don't mind the 70% final.
People are complaining about the 70% exam, which is a bit ridiculous, but the final exam was very easy. A lot of the lecture content is surface level, so as long as you review sufficiently you should be good. The quizzes had some very bizarre questions that made them more difficult, so your score is pretty dependent on what questions you get
Don't recommend. 70% final is crazy, but a lot are forgetting and a lot of y'all that are defending it are forgetting, that we only had 90 minutes to complete a 100 multiple choice question exam. That's about 1 minute per question, wtf. As well as having no exam review. The 70% final could be defensible if given more time and an exam review.
Don't listen to the people saying it's not even that bad because it is. No matter how much you review and study he's still gonna make up questions straight out of his a**. This isn't even me being petty the exam was worth 70%, I genuinely did not enjoy his teaching and found myself hating cogsci after
Avoid him at all costs for this class. He made the a lot of questions based on his stupid book that he makes students buy cause no one else does which is terrible for a 70% exam. He's also creepy as hell and makes weird a*s comments about teens. Good at public speaking like he's not boring just weird and creepy.
Jim needs to get off his high horse and actually create a curriculum that isn't so awfully weighted. This is a first year course and the exam is worth 70%. The other 30% being quizzes that he won't let you review in order to improve. He is a tenured prof so they won't do anything. Avoid at all costs.
Spent a lot of time writing down everything he said in his lectures; he will use information from his lectures that he doesn't include in his slides. The 70% exam was stressful, I still managed a 91% so if you study the material to the point that it actually makes sense to you then you will do okay. Funny guy though, too bad he tanked his rating
Took this class as an elective since it had good reviews. It was interesting but in person final exam was worth 70%. (was change from 4 tests worth 25% in previous years). You better know your stuff because test questions are made of up a lot of scenarios so sometimes the answers aren't black and white. Overall interesting but wouldn't take again
I was told by someone that this class would be pretty suitable as a labelled as a bird course, It was not. Also, the syllabus was changed from four 25% quizzes to three 10% quizzes and a final that is worth 70% of the final grade, and implemented the pass/final clause in the course. I would personally stay away from this course.
was pretty chill not bad
Crazy grading system.I understand that the 70% final exam was mentioned ahead HOWEVER this is a first year introductory course, most of us took this as an elective and it is stressful when expected to pass the exam to pass the course+ being NEW to university.Exam tanked everyone's grade and there is even a petition because how poorly everyone did.
I watched all the recordings in 1 week and still managed to pass the final exam; the course itself is pretty simple and interesting. I'm pretty sure if I had studied more, I would have aced the exam. 70% is insane, but if you literally take a bit of your time and actually study for the exam, there is almost no chance of failing.
This is evil.
Cgsc1001 this year had a controversial 70% (must pass to pass the course) final exam. While I do agree that this is a little much the exam was one of the most lenient exams I've taken so far being in my second year. All lectures are recorded, slides are detailed, expectations are made clear from the start including for the final. You'll be okay
this man is an evil mastermind. he may seem funny when u watch the online lecture videos in 2x speed but oh boy. you'll be suffering in that exam room doing that 70% exam paper while he's looking at u with the biggest smile on his face. do not take this class.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! DONT If you like yourself even a little you will stay away from anything Jim Davies, the 70% final was my last straw and NO I don't want to read your book!!
Professor Davies was interesting energetic and clearly very passionate about cognitive science. I attended every class because I was genuinely curious as to what I would learn that day. Yes a 70% final is a bit wild but with a little bit of effort it is very doable, especially because it was not a difficult exam. I would definitely recommend !!
Honestly, he is very clear about his expectations and marking, but 70% exam with a pass or fail clause being instated is insane, as I finished the class with a 63% but still failed, as I got a 49 on the exam. Despite the exam being organized to be fairly easy, it was not easy enough for it to be worth 70%.
First year course with a 70% exam, which the class average was a 61%. Most barely passed, and 25% failed. No exam review was provided. I don't suggest taking it unless required. You have to buy his book and watch his lectures but theres not much correlation between the two.
For a first year course, I don't recommend. 70% exam can really tank your grade even if you do well on quizzes. I know over 30 people who failed the exam or barely passed. Your gpa will be affected.
Avoid at all costs.
Everyone saying the exam wasn't that bad must have forgotten the hours spent studying. True the exam was mostly straightforward but only because I studied for 16-17 hours straight multiple days in a row. Not a bird course, not worth your time. Avoid this class at all costs.
He is one of the best first year profs. Go to the lectures, and if you miss it, watch the video, and TAKE NOTES and review regularly. If you keep up and don't leave your studying until December, and don't cheat on the online quizzes, the exam SHOULD NOT BE BAD. Everyone complaining about the exam is blaming Prof Davies for their poor study habits
Everyone failed exam
as an upperclassman who's been here since pre-covid, yes, a 70% final for a first year elective is a lot… but AI has destroyed formal education, it's what professors have to do now. don't miss the little details mentioned bc you'll be tested on obscure references lmao so pay attention and you'll be fine! this class shouldn't stress you out
