dietrick is one of the best teacher's i've had! he's intelligent, open-minded, and poses thought provoking questions. the class is by far my favorite and he's also my favorite teacher.
Great class. He cracks me up and appreciates well thought discussion. People who like to argue ideas will love it.
Very interesting class, not too hard if you read your stuff.
very very good teacher. the class is however too hard to be a gen ed. requirement. he requires too much time out of a general class.
Great guy but really technical on the topic. It is a stretch for a gen ed class
He is a great teacher. The class is really interesting and if you study your notes you can make a good grade. Not many assignments, in fact, really only one paper. He is very fair on grading and does curve. PLus he is pretty humorous.
AMazing class just do your reading. Hes great to get to know.
Excellent professor. The class is interesting and it is easy to pay attention to him. Take this class if you want an easy B...if you want an A you will have to study a little harder.
Do not take this class lightly. It has the potential to kick you right in the face. Very few are able to crawl away with an "A" Good Luck.
Deitrick is really cool, and is not that hard if you take him seriously.
Dietrick is the most self submerged jerk I have ever had to listen to for 50 min. 3 days a week. Aside from that, he is very intelligent and his classes are really interesting. Easy B Slightly Hard A
This class is somewhat hard. Even though his test are all multiple choice don't think its going to be easy. You really have to read the chapters. I struggled in this class and so did a few of my friends. The only extra credit he offers is a 3 page paper on any topic.
He's a good teacher and humorous also. I recommend his class, but be prepared to work for an 'A'. I've had him for three different courses and I would take him again.
He is self-absorbed and egotistical. Despite this, it is an interesting class and he knows what he is talking about. He can recall this stuff from memory without much thought. Good class....as others stated.....if you want an A....work. Don't come into this class close minded or with any preconceived notions about other faith structures....you will not get as much out of the class and it will become more difficult for you.
Deitrick has a hard time keeping his opinions to himself, especially since he thinks he is right about EVERYTHING!. The class wasn't as hard as people say it is. Just know your book well and you'll do fine on the tests. The assignments were actually interesting. You have to keep an open mind when you go in there though or you won't learn anything.
Started out interesting and then got painfully boring. He is very serious about his rules and instructions. Be on time with EVERYTHING. Tests were hard and irrelevant to anything that we discussed. You must buy a book and practicallly memorize it to make an A on the test.
He may be a little self-absorbed, but he is a good teacher. He knows his stuff, and he expects you to as well. Do not go in looking for an easy A because it won't happen. I got an A in the class, but I had to study for it. I believe that he spends to much time on Eastern religions, and it would be nice to hear more about Christianity and Judaism.
Deitrick is very misunderstood by people who arent in the field, it seems. He's hilarious and smart. What is most significant about him, perhaps, is that you may THINK he is giving his opinion about something or a religion, but he actually keeps those things to himself. I had three or four classes with him. Great guy.
pretty easy class if you can get past his trying to not be biased. be sure and staple your religious visit paper, it dropped my final grade a letter.
An excellent professor. You do have to study but well worth it.
It's only the conservative religious freaks who have a hard time with him. He's great. He encourages you to think about religions in ways you've never imagined. If you want to think critically about religion, this is the place to do it.
I was very anxious to start this class, and I've yet to be disappointed. Despite what others have said, I believe Deitrick is a very open-minded, intelligent, and dedicated professor. He doesn't rely on text, rather he focuses on experience. I would take a class of his every year if I could. It's easy if you show interest.
The class is easy if you just go by everything he says. Garbage in Garbage out. Don't try to argue. Don't try to get clarification. You must not have your own opinions.
Mr. Deitrick is a very nice guy once you get to know him. Don't take anything he says personally and you should do fine in this class, even if you have strong beliefs of your own. Workload is not heavy but you need to study if you want an A. Overall great class! =)
Dr. D is awesome--very down to earth. We had to write a couple of papers, go on a visit to observe a religious service of our choice, and had to keep an internet blog. All the tests come mainly from bolded and italicized terms in textbook. Read Chapter and come to class...easy A.
This class is fairly easy if you read the assigned readings, go to class, and take notes. There wasn't much classwork, but there is A Lot of reading. He's really nice though and I always enjoy the class. He encourages class participation and is always welcoming out thoughts and opinions.
this class is very confusing! i tried to read the book and it just made it wrose. he throw the book out because of that. he is very passionate about religion, come to class and it will help out the most.
Great guy. He will make you THINK!!
The fact is, people want to complain that he is too difficult, or too opinionated, or too in-depth. Well, he teaches religion. You get what you sign up for- it's not easy to understand a broad scope of religious faiths.he's one of he least openly opinionated (he just tries SUPER hard to get you to challenge your beliefs) and best teachers i've had.
All tests are online Pay attention in class even though it is quite boring He does all of the talking Attendance counts for 20% of your grade He takes role 1 min before class should start so be super early You have to visit a religious service and write a detailed paper abt it and it counts for a large portion of your grade Grading doesnt seem fair
I loved this class. I am not religious in any way but I loved learning about it. All of his test are online but that is a good thing, all you have to read and then take the test, you won't get less then a B. He is a really cool guy, I should mention that he is pretty critical on the writing assignment so work really hard on it.
Very intellegant and even still a teenager in some ways. He's easy to approach and will try and help you if you get behind, just keep in touch. He's the expert in Buddhism in that school!
I still do not know what he believes, but I do know he believes in something. He doesnt teach. He bashes every religion out there. Overall, he is a very easy tacher! Not much work and all the test are straight from the book and offline. He doesnt believe in finals but he with give you a quiz for your final. His class sucks but its an EASY A
Dr. Deitrick is AWESOME! I was really nervous about taking his class, but now I love it. You just have to be open minded. You can't allow yourself to be offended by him. Most of the time he is just taking on a character anyway. It's a fun, interactive class. The only way it can be hard is if you make it that way. He just shows you a whole new way of thinking about things. I would recommend this class to everyone! He is a great professor. He's very humorous too! Take the class. Enjoy the class.
excellent person! not the best teacher, his lectures are hardly ever about the subject, but he is really interesting. He hates grades and only does them because he has to. he has really given me a new perspective on a lot of things besides and including religion. readings were online and no book, and this was the worst part. great teacher.
He hates grades so the actual work isn't hard but he is terrible about getting grades back because of that so you worry about your grade alot. He says he doesn't dislike Christians but it's made clear by what he says that he doesn't. But he doesn't like a lot of religions for that matter. He's a nice guy and I enjoyed him but not the class.. waste.
if your easily offended do not take this class. he is very objective teacher, i learned a lot in his classes 3 essays is the only assignments 1 in the beginning 1 midterm 1 final. take him!
He is by far the worst teacher I ever had. From day one he was pushing his own agenda and I didn't learn a thing. His facts were incorrect. He was terrible with assignments. I felt myself constantly wanting to just walk out of the class. I am not easily offended, but he managed to have me fuming with annoyance every day.
Class seems like it will be interesting but often seems to go on for too long. He often lingers on certain topics and repeats what has already been said. However, I did enjoy the class, it is very easy and he is an extremely nice, pleasant, and helpful guy!!! He will do anything he can to help you with something if you just ask.
Overall I enjoyed the class. The book we used this semester sucked, but he is using a different book next semester. The papers are the biggest part of your grade. Do good on those and you will do fine in the class. He is very helpful and understanding as long as you talk to him. Not a bad class!!
I took World Religions. You'll have two papers and online quizzes. Just keep up with the book and take light notes in the class. He likes to go on tangents but he's a great teacher. Ask questions and make an effort. If you show up and show an interest, he'll be inclined to give you a good grade. Keep an open mind or you won't enjoy the class at all
This was an excellent course. Dr. Deitrick is absolutely THE professor to take for this course. He is very objective when it comes to his views/students views on religion. The class is discussion based and I learned to be more open minded concerning other religions. I have not changed my personal views, but I have learned to not be so judgmental.
An excellent class. Dr. Deitrick is THE professor to take for this course. He is very objective concerning his views/students views. I learned to be more open minded with regards to other religions. I never felt threatened concerning my personal beliefs. The class is discussion based and will challenge your thinking. Great class!

I really felt like the class could have been conducted better. For starters, he always talked about how we needed to conduct class without bias, but that never happened for the students or professor. Not to mention the lectures were a snore.
He is a good professor. Just keep up on the reading and you'll do fine. Makes the class entertaining and generally cares about your well being. Thinking required and don't get butt hurt
Skip without excuse lose a letter grade. No cumulative final All easy multiple choice tests-hands out study guide Said we wouldn't talk about controversial topics but it was all he lectured on. Especially wJudaism and Christianity. Has a strange mannerism with his hands while he lectures. You know how you say "come here" with your hands?
Deitrick is a good professor. I knew from the minute I stepped in his class I would enjoy it and him. Lectures are a little long and boring at times but not too bad. He enjoys when students get involved. I have never had a problem with him and would definitely take him again.
Dr. Deitrick is a friendly, engaging professor who makes an effort to be there for his students. He encourages you to come at the class with an open mind and minimize your bias, but I think he could do a little better at minimizing his own bias. The class itself is not difficult; just do the homework, go to class, and put effort into your writing
If you don't have thick religious skin, Dr. D will probably get to you. He says the bible is a bunch of made up stories. He tries to remain impartial but just can't. Beside that he's a great teacher, very knowledgeable. Funny at times. Don't see how you can fail his class short of giving zero effort. Laid back guy from L.A. describes him best.
He is a good professor. Just make sure you do your homework and show up to class. The entire course is only 100 points so you have to do everything and do it well. The 3 tests are worth the most. You have homework, but not everyday. He gives you a syllabus that lines out everything for the semester. He also loves to joke around while teaching.
Excellent Professor. Great seminar discussion leader. If you come to class, keep up with the readings, and participate you will be fine. Makes you work for it but doesn't want anyone to fail.
Great professor. Does NOT hate Christians but will challenge ANY beliefs you have. Fairly heavy courseload but keeping up and paying attention to lectures/taking good notes will almost guarantee an A
He does not give a heck about anyone but himself. Forget about your well being.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever had. He explicitly told me I had not done an assignment when it was in hands. He makes you feel like you are inadequate if you do not answer a question. Also his teachings never give any real content. I had to learn this entire course and all of the religions on my own. Do not take him ever.
Do not skip class. He has a policy you can miss TWO and then your whole grade is dropped 10%. He threatens the class too about attendance. He cusses a lot. He is really knowledgeable but is not very compassionate. YOU WILL NOT KNOW YOUR GRADE UNTIL THE FINAL which is very unfair. I do not recommend taking him. It's not an easy or blow off class.
The homework is insane. I learn more from the book than from Dr. D. He also said that as full-time students we don't have jobs to interfere because school is our job. He makes you feel like garbage when no one does well on quizzes or tests and said "I can't make you guys learn this stuff. I'm not doing anything wrong here." I hated this class.
He knows what he is talking about, but doesn't care about his audience when speaking. At first the odd comments he makes are funny, because you think he is being sarcastic. He isn't. No only do you need to read for this class, he makes sure you are, daily questions are given over the readings. The tests aren't hard if you attend class and read.
Dr. Deitrick grades ridiculously hard and criticizes you if you don't know how to answer his questions. He's weirdly authoritative at times that don't make sense. I wouldn't take him again.
10/10 recommend him to anyone! He truly cares about his students, while there are class reading assignments, they are only to benefit you. The essays can be difficult, but only if you do not spend the adequate time necessary to do well--do not try to B.S. him on work. Participate in class and it will be an enjoyable experience!
He is a great teacher but if you don't speak up the first week of class he won't call on you much during open discussion. Tough grader on the papers. He want's master level papers in a class for bachelors
All you have to do in this class is participate and do your homework. Professor Deitrick is very knowledgeable and his lectures are really really interesting. Be open-minded and don't take offense for anything he says. Participate in class discussions, I can't stress this enough!!
average teaching. entire grade based on pop quizzes, exams, and a resource paper. very repetitive; learned more from reading than lecture
he really cares about his students. he does get off topic easily so you don't end up covering everything in the unit. grade made up of midterm final 3 quizzes and a 6 page paper. STAY ON TOP OF YOUR READINGS. what he talks about in class isnt always on the quizzes. dont let the scary reviews scare you from this class but be ready for a challenge
Dr. Deitrick was horrible. If you dont agree with his point of view this class will be miserable. He says that the class if about talking and debating but in reality the class is just about him and him talking. Never really any class discussion like you would expect. Also a ton of reading if you want to pass!
I would never take his class again. Its a lot of reading and your never really sure which whats the test is over in the chapter. Not a lot extra credit work . But he does have office hours to help. He cares but its a hard class and very lecture heavy.
Doesnt answer questions clearly if at all, lectures irrelevant tangents. Lecture style useless & impossible to learn. Asked for zoom 2 hours before class after learning i was exposed to COVID & he didn't get back to me until after class & told me i should have told him in advance?? how? semi rude to students Moderate difficulty but not worth it imo
Cons: Sick days are not excused and any day you miss detracts 10 points from a 100 point total attendance score. Pop quizzes are sporadic and may include trick questions Pros: Lectures can be interesting
I loved this class so much. He has clear grading rubrics on essays. Homework due every day before your class, but it's usually pretty short. Professor Deitrick usually hints at a "pop" quiz before you have one, but not always so stay on your readings. You also definitely have to read because some questions on the quiz aren't talked about in class.
Tough, but he's awesome. He's good at lecturing and knows his stuff. Do your reading and be prepared for pop quizzes, they are very random. Tests are multiple choice but can be difficult to study for, he likes being mysterious, "You should be studying everything!" As long as it's clear you're putting effort into his class, he's pretty cool.
Dr. Deitrick slays. He is clearly passionate about what he's teaching and knows his stuff. The only thing I would say is he is a harsh grader and not very forgiving if you miss class for personal issues. Also, weird hand gestures. Overall a friendly guy if you're an engaged student, which I totally respect.
I'm currently taking this class and would never recommend it to anyone. He is rude and says things that should not be said yet alone talked about in a class. He tells you that the class will take an unbiased approach but then he will teach only off of his own opinions. He does not care about his students at all. He picks on students as well. SO BAD
He is a very strict professor! Make sure to always be on time. He can be understanding if a personal issue comes up just email him. Try to stay on his good side! Pop quizzes! Participate in class and be sure to read thats how you get on his good side!
This professor can sometimes run in circles and go the whole class period without really teaching much. You have a lot of textbook readings. Make sure you know your information before going into class because he gets very upset if you don't answer his questions.
The class was one of my favorite studies because of him. I will say that there are daily questions that are due the next class but its only a few questions. All quizzes are online that you can take twice and it's also open book. the class is lecture heavy but if you take notes during class with your textbook + do the daily questions you'll be fine.
Goes between being nice and hurtful. Questions due before every class. Six quizzes, open books. Two test uses a lot of quiz questions and basic bold terms from the textbook. Will get mad if you can't answer a question and will shame the whole class for a minute about coming unprepared. Dreaded going to class always for fear of being yelled at.
Class isn't entirely difficult if you do the reading and have very good study habits, but if you don't prepare well, it will 100% be your most difficult class. Avoid his class if you're sensitive and refuse to be wrong. He is very callous and will probably say something that might offend you (it's a religion class, so duh).
It's as easy as the amount of effort you put in to it. His class is very lecture heavy, but he requires a reading every day so that we can discuss, and he can tell when you haven't read. He loosened up at the end of the semester, but our class also had his highest attendance rate and participated in discussion. Come prepared and you should do fine
Lectures consist of whatever he feels like talking about that day within the religion he's talking about. He's fairly disorganized all the time and we met 3x a week for my class. Loves his pop quizzes. Can be fairly disrespectful (doesn't answer emails, yells at students quite often) Be prepared to not know your grade. Dislikes all forms of tech.
This class was very lecture heavy & he was very much an over-explainer. He's a pretty good person & ok Professor. There is a lot of readings so take notes. He doesn't give any study guides or tells you what to focus on so be ready for a random pop quiz always. On exams he does let us have a notecard we can write on front & back which was helpful!
I didn't like him at first, but it gets better once you learn his teaching style Come to class having already read the readings and take notes bc he quizzes over what yall talk about in class. He is willing to work with you if he sees you actually putting effort in. Overall a very interesting class.
I don't know how to sum up my semester with him... I took him for Music and Sound in World Religions (an FYS). He was impossible to get ahold of outside of class and was a bit everywhere during the class. We spent half the semester talking about one religion and then sped run the other three covered in the content.
Lowkey dreaded this class. Supposed to be easy since it's an FYS, but it was the opposite. Lots of pop quizzes, lots of reading, lots of him talking. Seems like a nice person overall but also sometimes very condescending. Says he wants everyone to be successful but not very forgiving for anything. Also, never puts in any grades.
Honestly DO NOT take this class or this professor. He gives out pop quizzes and will repeat himself so much. He is a great person but not a good professor. If you do take this class make sure you're ready to read and take notes all before class he is very strict on that.
