straightforward lectures, nice professor
easy class, somewhat interesting, nice prof
I love JIM DUNN! Learn and help your GPA!
Very good teacher. Very interesting class. Keeps you entertained. Fair.
gives study guides but they don't help with the actual tests.
The one class I could stay awake in.
A overall great guy!!
Good prof, makes class interesting, can learn a lot
Jim was cool, GO TO HIS STUDY MEETINGS
Great class, great prof, keeps things interesting
This man looks like Bob Villa but acts like Bill Nye! Take his class!!!
GREAT prof. gives great study guides that help a lot with the tests.

Easy class. Very arrogant!
very energetic and knows his stuff
Don't get sucked into the I-believe-it-cuz-you-said-so-&-it-sounds-good vortex.
Interesting and easy class. Uncle Jack rules!!!
Jim is an interesting teacher and has different views on matters and subjects
Great Prof!!! Take Entomology from him, he knows his stuff!
everybody loves mr. dunn
at times hard to understand his ??
Is very helpful if you ask him questions, makes time for the student.. GOOD
Class was ok if you're a tree hugger and the teacher was alright.
Great Prof, Interesting, Clear, Entertaining
Hard tests. doesn't respond to e-mails
Kept class very interesting, great prof., would recomend him to anyone
Great Prof, just make sure you study!
I got a 99 on 2 tests well sleeping through class.

great/funny,talks about curr. events, ask him for help-he'll help!
need to study for exams, but very fun class, lots of discussion
Great prof.! Class is tough but he's always willing to help out if needed.
Very easy, little homework, he's a little full of himself tho
Good class, take this guy. Understands its just a gen ed. and is not that hard. Is interesting, helpful, and understandable... if you are halfway smart you'll get an A or B easily.
Tries to be funny, but is cheesey. Exams are mulitiple choice, but very wordy and most of it is from the book, rather than lectures. Deep down could be nice, but is arrogant and ignorant.
This class was very easy. Dunn is funny, and the few assignments in this class make it enjoyable.
Very good class but very unclear tests. The multiple choice are very ambiguous and it is a matter of how well you guess and think analytically in order to do good in them. If tests were better wrriten, i'd recommend him.
Great teacher and a GREAT Class. Everything learned is very interesting! The tests aren't too hard as long as you use the study guide. Best class at Grand Valley :)
Great guy but tests are hard! He gives outline-take lots of notes on lecture. Tests are wordy and confusing. I would recommend if you are going to go to class, take notes, and study for tests. He tries to help, but not very good at it.

He is a great guy who understands that the class is a gen ed. If you go to class his exams are not to tough.
Try to participate in lecture. He'll get angry otherwise. Go to class, take notes, read the material and you'll get a good grade. There are quite a few assignments, but they're all pretty easy.
He is funny, but his test suck.
Great teacher, great class. Usually pretty easy, but not always. Go to class, do the assignments, take a few notes, and you should have a B or better.
The summer course was great. The assignments were frequent and not terribly difficult. He also didn’t assign any busy work with the substitution of class participation. Overall he was a great professor.
Very rude/predudiced towards students from different cities. Also very rude when asked for help. Seemed like helping the student understand wasnt the high priority for him.
He gives vague assignments and his tests are wordy and confusing. He doesn't explain what he wants you to do ever. AVOID this class if you can!
holds a grudge something awful, offers vague assignments and refuses to post them anywhere but in class at the time of assigning. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! the grade is not worth his attitude!
Extremely rude! Doesn't help students, annoying comments, very prejuidice, stupid assignments and wont post them on blackboard. DO NOT TAKE! HE IS AWEFUL!!!!!
Professor makes the labs fun and interesting. Expects a lot on the lab papers, otherwise very easy class.
i don't think this guy understood that this was a 100 level class b/c we had a ton of assignments that he only would give to you if you showed up to class. did not use the book at all. tests were unclear and towards the end he got very lazy and pulled assignments out of the air.
Hard 100 level class. Good prof, but not up-to-date on his material. Teached a lot of things as fact that simply weren't true. Posted hundreds of topics on blackboard to review for a 70 question final. Expected students to never miss class.
This guy was a lot of fun. Very funny. Reminded me a lot of Don DeLuise. I would take him again if I could. Quite enjoyable.
His tests were very unclear. I didn't keep attention in the class at all. It is a 100 Level class not a 600 level class as it seemed to me.
You can't do bad in theis class unless you don't show up. I took it in the summer and it was a SIMPLE class. Just take notes and ask for clarification if needed as some things are confusing. EASY B even without the book. Only gave one easy book assignment. If you try hard and study you can get an A.
Good professor. If you go to class and take good notes you'll have no problem. People that complain about assignments and when they are given should maybe go to class since everyone else who goes does fine!
he wants u to apply what u learn and some people have not had tests like that which makes it hard to catch on to. He is a good teacher but u MUST got to class, alot of the test if from inclass notes, he also give pop quizes and assignments. if u want and easy class that is a no brainer then dont tak
Great professor! His lectures were interesting, well prepared and thought provoking. He's very helpful if you stop by his office. Make sure you can answer all the questions he puts up on blackboard. Attendance/good notes are essential. The tests are challenging. To do well you have to understand the material, not just memorize terms. Great class.
Easy but boring class. Puts way too much of his own politics into his lectures, which tends to get annoying. Would not recommend stating your opposing political affiliation out loud when he is present. All and all a funny guy, try not to get pissed from his comments. He does warn that politics plays a vital role in the subject matter though.
He was a nice guy. Really loves those butterflies he studies. His tests were fairly easy. Classes were interesting.
There could not be a better BIO teacher than Jim. He will help you out anytime. He grades fairly and he understands that students are learning to become professionals, not BE professionals like the stupid twin profs do. No surprises on exams he tells you what you need to know. Take Jim, youll be glad you did and u'll learn a learn a lot!
What a waste of time. The lectures cover about as much material as crap on toilet paper. He is disorganized in presentation, cites journals from 1702, and the text is intended for junior high school flunkees. I don't know how this joker got a PhD. His level of thought is about as deep as a sorority girl's personality.
jim is an awesome guy but his tests are hard as hell. give LOTS AND LOTS of DETAIL!! he's helpful especially in lab but his tests are a ****
He is a good prof. He knows what he is talking about and makes class interesting...take his class, you wont regret it.
lecture was boring but he covers a lot. study notes for tests. they are insanely hard. he is an ok guy, if you are a guy. he doesnt really think much of girls so watch out.
I realy didnt like him or his class. He makes people feel stupid.
very opinionated which became annoying very fast. tests are decent as well as HW. Brought too much politics into the class, simply bite your tougue if you disagree with what he says, not worth the fight.
Dunn was a great prof. I loved his class...although it was boaring at times...but what lecture is not? He is funny, and as far as bringing his own political views to teaching...what ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST is not going to be at least slightly liberal -which does not change the way he teaches- good prof, easy, go to class and its an easy A.
Prof Dunn is a great teacher. Easy lectures but TAKE NOTES!! You will be suprised at how many test questions are from his lectures. Make sure to study for tests because they can be difficult. He doesn't make you feel stupid either, he just wants feedback from students. GO TO CLASS ON FRIDAYS...he gives a quiz every friday.
EASY class. Make sure you take decent notes and you will be fine. Liberal politics but what else would you expect...
ugh, hated the class. He yells at you the entire time then expects you to remember every little detail he shouted at you. Extremely liberal, not open to other viewpoints, would not recommend.
Good professor. If you actively take notes and listen in class, you'll do fine. He gives review questions that are extremely relevant to the exams. So basically, take notes so you can answer the review questions and study the topics covered by those questions, and you'll surely get a high grade. (Yes he's liberal, but he is open to other views)
I love Jim Dunn! I would sign up for his class again in a heartbeat. His lectures were entertaining and exams came right from the lectures. Be sure to study your notes, though, cuz some questions are detailed. Be sure to go to class every Friday cuz there's a quiz. Didn't need the book. Study and listen during lectures and you'll do just fine.
Dunn's Lecture is entertaining and he is very enthusiastic about Ecology Material. He really utilizes blackboard for extra notes. It's a huge workload, especially in lab. His exams are rough...show up for class because he takes attendance and those that are there get the exam curve if there is one. Take the time to really understand the material.
He's an entertaining professor who really enjoys what he teaches. Sometimes he screws up on exam questions (answer sheet is incorrect -- so check that!) and he's opinionated but he's a good professor. He makes the stuff practical. I definitely recommend him!
Entertaining, intelligent guy who knows his stuff, but kind of opinionated and sometimes goes off on tangents. He really stresses the fact that students should process and think about class material rather than focusing on rote memorization, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what you want out of a class.
This class is a joke. My friends and I studied really hard for each test and he didn't like us so he gave us bad grades. I went to his office multiple times, where he made me feel stupid. I've never felt so dumb in my life. He is arrogant and can't use correct grammar to save his life (their/they're/there). I enjoy this subject he made it terrible.
Prof Dunn was interesting, engaging, humorous, lively, and made the course great. ALL test material came from notes and BB slides. There were no surprises on any of the exams. In every unit he will say star this-it will be on the exam and worth 10-15 pts, underline this, know this, bold this. So, exams easy if you just listen and do the studying!
Prof Dunn is great. He is interesting to listen to and makes class fun. All the material is clarified, and he literally tells you what to know for the exams. Make sure you understand the concept and not just memorize.
Prof. Dunn is a really cool guy. He made Environmental Science something interesting, that I thought was going to be terrible. One of the easier classes I have takes so far, but a class I learned a lot from and would recommend people to take! You dont really need the book, he goes through point-by-point what you need to know for exams.
I liked Dunn as a teacher because he really knew his stuff through personal experience. If you don't know what you're talking about, he WILL make you look like an idiot but I did well in the class so I just enjoyed the show. You're kind of on your own, though, because he seems to get frustrated by "sophomoric" questions.
He's very knowledgeable and passionate, but uses the same adjectives over and over again, obsessed with microbes. Tests are decent, but multiple choice is pretty hard, curves scores. Overall pretty good!
Prof. Dunn is a GREAT guy; very knowledgeable about his subject. However, he is a terrible professor. His grading is inconsistent, lectures are unorganized rambles that tend to repeat themselves, assignments are unclear, questions are responded to but not answered, and he requires a LOT(too much) detail in the papers for a SOPHOMORE level class.
Tells you what exactly needs to be on the exam. Great lab prof too as he basically outlined our papers for us. He actually teaches you how to write in the science field rather than just report the data you found. Take this guy and you wont regret it.
Could be a great guy outside of class, but as a professor he can be very arrogant. Constantly acknowledges it's a sophomore level class, yet expects senior level answers. Think there is no such thing as a 'dumb' question? There is to him and he will call you out on it in front of the whole class. Switch professors if you can!
One of the worst teachers that I have had at GV. His lectures are extremely unorganized and he repeats himself a lot. He is very arrogant and disrespectful to students. He doesn't like questions and expects you to figure it out on your own. However, if you work hard you can get an A in the class. Do not take him for Lab! He is super hard grader.
I actually loved this class. His exams were pretty easy if you listened to him. He tells exactly what will be on the exams. He repeats himself so we know what he will test on. Very funny prof also. He made the class fun in my opinion.
Professor Dunn is a great professor! He keeps lecture interesting and funny, and is willing to help students on their projects. The lab papers are a lot of work, but they're interesting and Professor Dunn is willing to help clarify any concepts that aren't understood. I definitely recommend this professor!!
Excellent professor. Passionate about the material and you will learn a lot.
This professor is a very arrogant man. I will admit that he does have a lot of knowledge about this stuff and is passionate about it, he expects that we know everything perfectly like he does. He appears to be annoyed by questions. He is extremely hard. This is only a 3 credit class with the work load of a grad school class. IMPOSSIBLE!
Dunn is definitely a cool professor! I had him for general ecology, which is in truth, kind of boring. However, his lectures were really entertaining and he provided really good examples for all of the concepts. He made a lot of jokes, too! I definitely recommend him as a professor.
Prof. Dunn is the best professor I have had at GV. He is easy to understand and makes it very clear what he wants you to know. Highly recommend him, especially for his insect classes. Once again, best professor I've had out of the three years I've been here.
Took for Ecology as a summer class and he was awesome! Labs are tedious and spent outside where the bugs were bad, but he was so helpful for all assignments and the tests were often half made up of old quiz questions! He offered a TON of extra credit, but I think it just might be during the summer. For the papers, go and see him at his office!
I recommend taking a different prof. Dunn expects you to read his mind when it comes to his short answer questions, and his multiple choice are very poorly written and confusing. His lectures do not follow a structure and induce slumber. He's passionate about it and cares about us, but he's arrogant, like he needs to prove something to himself.
He's a great prof! Sometimes he can be quite conceited and a bit full of himself but honestly it doesn't affect his teaching. His lectures are very informative and interesting, uses a lot of current problems in ecology to keep everyone interested. Also took him for lab and he is usually a pretty fair grader. I would definitely take him again!
Definitely the best professor I've had so far at GV. Attendance is not required, but go to lecture. I wish I had attended lecture more often because Jim makes it so easy for you to succeed if you do. Important material is made clear in lecture. Exams are basically half old quiz questions. He offers more than enough extra credit. And he's funny!
I had Dr. Dunn for lecture. He is a bit full of himself and thinks he's super funny, but you get used to it. He offers a ton of curves on his exams and quizzes (which are weekly). Exams are multiple choice and short answer, and 80% of the questions are from old quizzes and exams. Would definitely recommend and would take again.
I had Dunn for a Monday Wednesday Friday lecture for 50 minutes. Lectures cover broad topics but dunn doesnt specifically make clear what he wants for his quizzes. WHICH ARE WEEKLY. This is probably the most annoying part of the class, you never know what to expect on these. Some are super general, but others are way too specific.
Jim Dunn is a cool professor. The first few days he comes across as extremely liberal (and he is... but he's teaching an environmental science course so that's probably a given). He gives extra credit for showing up to class. His tests aren't easy, but not really hard. There's a project that requires some work. All in all, a solid class.
Weekly quizzes which made what to expect on exams pretty clear. Focused on case studies and examples which made it way easier too learn. Dunn really knows his stuff and is a great teacher.
He is an incredibly tough grader. Very unorganized. Confusing to follow in class. Doesn't really give you any help.
He was very disorganized, but he posted study guides for the exams that basically spelled out most of the questions. His lectures were interesting, and he had lots of personal stories that helped make concepts easy to remember. This is why I would say it's a "show up & pass" class; if you paid attention during lecture, most of the info would stick.
I really enjoyed Professor Dunn. He was super supportive of his students and helped me a lot with projects when I had questions. Even met with me so I could get clarity for my forest paper and how to write it correctly. I learned a lot from this class, and he is a lot of fun and laid back. Get to go outside a bunch too!
If you attend lecture you will pass class. Make sure you take down notes of all of his examples because those usually show up on the quizzes and make sure you study the quizzes because those end up on the tests. He has a very sarcastic personality and is very blunt which is why I found him very funny and loved going to class!
Very easy class, watch the lectures and you will do great. Professor Dunn is very passionate about what he teaches.
