Arrogant jerk who does not belong in classroom. Disrespectful to students and completely unhelpful. Belongs in a lab where he doesn't have to explain anything.
He wants you to think for yourself. He's challenging and always willing to help you. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about biochemistry.
The best CHEM teacher I have had at MSU.
Dr. Dyer is an excellent teacher. He has made a potentially intimidating subject very enjoyable. Using wit, visuals and concise descriptions he makes the concepts of biochemistry very clear. But he does not suffer fools. Study and you'll succeed.
Dyer is the best professor I've ever had. He made biochem easy and enjoyable to learn. His odd personality made him funny...he told us funny stories, and the labs were easy. All professors should be like him...I wish he taught every class!!!
take his class only if you are one of those student who does well in every class. if you are an average student, well good luck.
Dr. Dyer is an excellent teacher. He explains concisely and makes biochemistry, a fairly difficult subject, fun and approachable. He also expects you to know everything! Like any other chemistry class, study and you'll do very well! He does tend to get a little overexcited and shouts a lot...
Dyer is grrrrreat
anyone that thinks dyer is an unfair or arrogant prof. hasn't joined the rest of the world in "reality." true, he is not easy, which is what makes him great. no excuses, you must study and know the material. i mean, what do you expect taking biochem 1 or 2, that it's going to be easy? you fool
Dyer is an ass. Yes he is goofy and fun but what the hell? Ask questions we would actually know. What do i care what you ate for dinner 3 days ago? that does not help me pass the class in any way.
Like I said before, Dyer is a great teacher. After taking his Biochem 2 class, your ability to memorize/understand biology stuff will increase exponentially! Take his class if you're gonna take the MCAT. Just study like you're supposed to. You'll do fine...no, I'm serious! You need to really study!!
He is one of the best professors around! I learned a LOT from him. He is a very intelligent man who knows plenty, every word he spoke was a great tip I could use in a research lab. Yes, he can be intimidating, but nothing beats the fact that he is a great educator. He sometimes says the funniest things. I wish he taught more classes.
Extremely thourough though he can be pompous and condescending. Requires a LOT of study time, but you learn a lot. Whatever you do, don't ask him what will be on the test, cuz you'll get the same response everytime (everything) and he'll give you a demeaning look. Oh and this class can help you lose weight and sleep.
hes awesome!!!! i never can understand chemistry and i actually got a's on his tests. i never even got a's in general chem. hes funny and sometimes pissed off but he understands things well. make sure your on time to class!!
Awesome Professor! One of the best professors of the chemistry department! You will learn a lot in his class....but you need to study hard!
His tests were easy to fair. His class is not boring. He yells a lot, but he doas cae. He's also funny and cute.
Dr. Dyer is a great teacher! He's really helpful if you're not afraid to ask him a question. If you listen to what he says and study well, you can do well in his class. I would recommend him to anyone and he's one of the best teachers I've had.
He his hands down the best professor for biochem although delaney might be easier. He makes you understand the material very well. I definatly recommend him..
It helps to know a lot about useless state facts about Kansas...lots of extra credit. Weekly quizzes, tho dreaded, helped a lot.
easy and cute..!!helps you to understand the mterial
fun class i learned a lot and finally i understood why they make us bio majors take so many chemistry classes! for extra point questions the answer always has to do with KANZAS! lol
Dr.Dyer is one of the greatest professors I have ever had!In each class I have taken with him he has presented the material in a clear and enjoyable manner. He wants to prepare each one of his students for the "real" world and I am lucky to have had the oppotunity to learn from him.You will definately learn something and not regret a minute of it.
very good, but he requires very high level.
Not an easy class.. This guy is kind of arrogant and stuck up for reasons unknown. Teaches class decently. just write whatever he says. and memorize it for the exams. first test is half multiple choice half open ended. next one is multiple choice. third is half and half.4th is multiple choice and cumulative. he doesnt curve, period! good luck..
Dr. Dyer is the best teacher ever!
1st thing i have to say, this class will be the greatest "laxative" you'll ever take. He is really intimidating at first, but then u get used to his mood swings. He will definitely teach u discipline and how to pay attention in class. Entire semester was a nightmare, but at the end you'll learn more about bio and chem in 1 semester than u expected.
In order to do well in this class you need to be there, take notes, & participate. He is intimidating but you will get used to him. Take good notes - suggest a tape recorder to catch everything. The 4th exam & final were multiple choice. Despite the negative comments on here I liked Dyer and enjoyed his class even though he was a bit nuts... :0)
Yea he's a great guy, through and through. He's got a southern drawl makes you feel right at home; that is when he's not yelling at some poor kid haha. He was crystal clear as to what was going to be on the exams. take good notes, study the book well, and you've got that A in the bag. It's tough material, it's Biochemistry, respect it, give it time
By no means a walk, you're going to have to study your ass off. He never goes into details, and focuses more on breadth than depth.
Very soft spoken. You should ALWAYS write down what he says in class. Exams are multiple - choice, but make no mistake - if you fool around, you'll do miserably. You must study hard.
had him for biochem last smester best teacher i have ever had. This class is not easy and you have to study hard it is the only way you will do well. The guy is really nice and is very clear in class. takes good notes. record his class it is easier to study for exams, which are multiple choice.
Quite possibly one of the best professors at the university. There aren't many who genuinely care about students suceeding. The key is to keep up on the material throughout the semester and write down what he says. If you do that and do review sheets, you'll do well. Despite being a high level chemistry course, it was enjoyable and recommend it.
I took his Biochem 2 class and if you read the book, its alright.
Ok seriously this guy can teach!! highly recommended for both lecture and lab. review sheet for the test so u know what to expect, there are no surprises, extra credit is 99% of the time KANSAS!! Class with him was alot of fun!
Dr. Dyer is one of the best professors in the Chem department. Took him for Experimental Biochem, and he made things crystal clear and you knew exactly what was expected. Too bad I can't take him for lecture. Write down whatever he says if you want to gain his respect, study the review sheets and come to lab prepared to ace this class.
He is just AWESOME!!!! He makes things very clear and drills it into your head. I took Chem 121 with him over the summer and he made it very interesting and easy to understand. I strongly recommend him for both chem and non-chem majors. Please take him if you really want to learn the basics of chem and its insights.
BEST CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR! I had him over the summer for Chem 1 & 2. If you copy down ALL his notes, you are guaranteed to do great in his class. TAKE HIM! I highly recommend him.
Nice professor. He went over all the equations needed for the tests probably 10+ times. If you did the problems yourself at home or understood how he did it in class, the class should be easy. I would recommend him to a friend.
His exams are hard.. And it doesn't go over all materials.
His tests were hard and he was not clear with what was on the exam. I got A's in organic and I work hard for my grade but with him it was impossible. He was rude sometimes and would call out people in class I didn't like that. Overall I would not recommend him. Does not care about his students.
He is not nice like everyone says he's actually rude to students. He is not clear with what is expected of you. He expects you to be a genius already because he does not explain well. I worked really hard in his class and ended up with a C. Messed up my gpa big time. I wish i would have taken someone else.
didnt like him hes not nice and not clear that is going to be on the exam.
Dr. Dyer is the best man to take for Biochem. This is not an easy class so make sure to take all his notes, attend all classes and pay attention. He actually makes things interesting and funny. He is very knowledgeable and always willing to help you out. He does not curve and therefore what you get is what you earned. Study and you will get an A.
Dr. Dyer is the man. He embeds the information in his students. N-Calpha-Ccarbonyl, If you do not understand this by the end of class, that means you should drop the class. He made me love biochemistry, I read the book because I enjoyed his lectures. I would read the chapter b4 class just so I can ask questions. LOVED HIS CLASS, TAKE HIM!!!
I really liked him as a professor. He explains everything very well and makes jokes to make the class fun. Write every single word that comes out of his mouth, because his exams are based on what he says in class. Overall very good professor, exams are challenging but fair!! Take him! You won't regret!
Terrible teacher, never explains anything clearly. Only good thing is he give study guides before tests but if you just study that the best you'll get is a C.
One of the best professors I've had at the MSU. Truly cared for his students to do well. Had him for both the lecture and the lab. I look forward to take biochem 2 with dr dyer in the next semester.
Probably my favorite professor at MSU. Had him for both semesters of biochem, his lectures are straight forward. You will need the textbook though. You have to listen to what he says to pass the exams (strongly suggest recording the lectures). He's pretty easy going and makes random jokes. Exams are challenging but fair and he gives extra credit.
Dr. Dyer is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are very engaging, interesting and he adds a lot of humor to his class. His exams are very fair as long as you study in advance and take good notes during his lectures. If there's someone to take for biochem, take Dyer and I guarantee you'll learn!!
The ultimate measure of an effective pedagogue is the ability to establish long-term memories in the minds of their students . I can still hear Dr. Dyer's lessons about the fundamentals in my head. He actually makes you understand HOW biochemistry works! I am 100% prepared for a rigorous Ph.D. course in biochemistry because of him!
He is a nice guy but his questions on exams are tricky. He doesn't even go over some of the material on the exams so you have to read the textbook. He literally reads off the textbook. No PP or study guides. Just some practice problems. 3 exams and a final. I had a difficult time in his course. I would not recommend him.
Dr. Dyer makes Biochem so easy to understand. Just read the book, do the question problems he posts on canvas and you'll do good. Exams are multiple questions, some of them are tricky but if you study the notes you'll be okay. RECORD EVERY LECTURE! The exams are based on the lectures too.
Amazing professor and make my intro to chem class a joy. He doesn't require you to use the textbook and as long as you show up consistently, listen, take nots and study everything is an easy A!! For perspective: Exam 1: 123/22, Exam 2: 120.3/120, Exam 3 105/125, Final 115/120. Forgot about exam 3 date and was lazy with the final because I had an A
He is alright. He posts questions from the test bank which end up being the questions on the exam. I personally did not like this style of teaching because I am actually interested in biochemistry and figuring things out. If you are a typical premed who only wants an A to get into medical school just to do bad go ahead. Otherwise take a harder prof
amazing professor that truly wants you to pass the class! smart, knows what he's talking about, and great at explaining the info to you in a way that you will truly understand as long as you take thorough notes (which this class taught me how to do better as well). i genuinely feel smarter after taking his class.
He is the least involved professor I have ever seen. Does not put any effort into teaching.
amazing professor! so understanding and helpful, great lectures, funny
The worst professor on campus. Gives a lot of attitude when you don't answer his questions and when you finally build the courage to answer he nearly embarrasses you or gives you a short response. Is always late with uploading assignments, meanwhile they are due the next day. Sucks at giving partial credit on the open ended part of exams.
Contrary to the previous reviews of taking Dyer for biochem, I really enjoyed the class. I did not find him to have bad lectures at all. He's is one of the most in depth professors I've had. Don't be mistaken, this is a very difficult course, but you're taking a level 370 chem course wouldn't you expect it to be? He could be sassy but overall good
If you care about your medical career, dont take him. Doesnt know what hes going to test you when you ask. Think youll get any help by going to his office hours? Think again. Insults you and tells you to withdraw from the class if you cant answer questions. Has personal issues but takes out anger while making his nonsense exams. DONT TAKE HIM.
So far, this has been the most stressful class I've ever taken. He takes a very long time to respond to emails. He isn't the friendliest of people, so meeting him face to face was nerve-wracking. The topics he claims will be on the exams never turn out to be on the exams. Many people dropped, and I honestly don't blame them for doing so.
took 4 week summer class, so obv it wasn't easy. Dyer is amazing and one of my favorite professors! He gives great lectures, takes lots of notes! I can't speak for the more difficult classes, but I would looove to take him again. He cares about his students esp if you show you're making an effort. One of the most kind professors I ever met
He doesn't do a great job of explaining his lectures. Be prepared to watch plenty youtube videos, I used the organic chemistry teacher. Definitely did a better job at explaining. He talks very fast and erases the white board before you get a chance to write it down. AND he doesn't even make his own notes so you need to write everything down.
He talks so slow. This is the class before Chem 120 and he belabors every single point saying that ours is the dumb class to prepare us for Chem 120. He takes forever to respond to emails and he is stubborn. I tried correcting him on a problem, and he embarrassed me in front of the whole class saying, "No. You need to solve it the way I do."
Prof. Dyer is encouraging students to come and talk to him for help in the class, he just doesn't take any constructive criticism. Not understanding. So many of the students in the class are failing, he says it's our fault. When giving back quizzes, he takes off a ridiculous amount of points when you could've gotten a 8/10. He gives zero points.
Great professor! Use what he says during lecture to study from the textbook. Go to his office hours if you need clarification, he's really helpful when it comes to not understanding something. HW is online and most of your grade is the exams. Tries to help you w/ extra credit if needed, but heard he doesn't curve.
Professor Dyer has changed my entire outlook on MSU professors. He truly does care about his students and wants the absolute best for them. He was always helping us focus on how to study better, ways to make time for our schoolwork, broke down chemistry in more understandable terms. I can go on and on but he was my favorite and made my semester.
This prof is good however sometimes he goes over some topics really quickly so i would suggest you to watch youtube videos. For the final exam, he gave us study guide which was really helpful in the final exam. I actually had B in the class but he curved it to B+.
Pop quiz heavy, he'll lecture one day or briefly discuss the topic then give you a quiz on it the next class. Doesn't like to give pursual credit on tests either. Gets mad at the class for not knowing the answer and is prone to yelling and being passive-aggressive I will never take one of his classes again.
If you cannot teach yourself Chem/math don't take him. Very hands off. Attendance is not required but he does give pop quizzes. Best to go so you don't get a 0. He cares to help you if you tell him and reach out. He does keep count if you go to office hours. No hw. Just graded on Exams & quizzes. He does tries to give extra credit when he can.
Dr. Dyer is awesome! BC 1&2 were taught very fairly. Go to lecture, he will teach you how to answer questions using the info you know- important skill, it is helping me outside class. Exams are not easy, especially for BC1. Need to really understand the material to do well. Must spend lot of time studying to do well.Overall great professor + person
Talks too slowly, very boring, overcomplicates things, really would not take again. Might be better for upper level classes but if you're just beginning chemistry I definitely do not recommend
He's a good lecturer, but outside of class he's rude and unapproachable. I went to him for advice on my exams and the gist of our conversation was him telling me to "try harder." I received nothing constructive and felt more lost than before I spoke to him. It was disappointing because I really did enjoy his lectures and wanted to learn.
4 week summer course. do not recommend extremely fast paced. did not explain things thoroughly and did not curve. somewhat of a nice guy though.
Sitting in his class as I type this. He's mean! Not patient! And also we can't even ask questions or ask him to repeat himself bc he gets annoyed. Very passive aggressive. Do not take him. My friend said goodey is sweet.
Attendance is not mandatory but he gives quizzes at random times. The only things you get graded on is quizzes and exams, there's no homework to support your grade so be prepared to practice and study! (grades drop easily). I had friends dropping his class because it was "too hard" when they didn't bother to study. Overall, a great guy 8.9/10
Honestly worst chemistry professor ever. Very scary and intimidating. Promised to curve and never did.
This professor does nothing to help us succeed in this class. There are no power points. No review session before exams. The only way to study for his class by listening to his recorded lectures which can be really time consuming. Biochem is not even that hard, If this prof puts a little effort in this course. I found biochem lot easier than orgo
Dr. Dyer is a very kind person and cares about his students. He is a tough grader. If you go to class and ask for help he is more than happy to help. I think he really appreciates the students who are trying hard. The work is hard but that can't be helped.
Guys, if you are deciding between Goodey and Dyer for biochemistry, please take Dyer. Dyer understands the material and makes sure you understand the material as well. He is lecture heavy tho so to get a good grade in this class just make sure to take notes actively and study a week in advance. As someone who has had both professors, Dyer is best
His expectations are unfair. He reads off the textbook, no PPT or notes. Lecture is so confusing. He is lazy, rude, & has no respect for his students or their time. He will yell at you. The only benefit is he gives a lot of extra credit. Goodey is not great either but there's structure to her class. Good reviews are tripping
I really enjoyed this class of his, he is tough sometimes but I think it's because he wants everyone to pass and succeeded. There is no homework but you HAVE to put in the extra work outside of class to do well. Attendance isn't graded but you should go. You know in the syllabus whenever there is an exam, quizzes he will usually 2 days before.
I was very disappointed with this professor's level of professionalism. While I understand that the course is challenging and requires consistent study, his approach in class was discouraging. He told students that this class was not for them and suggested they drop it. Rather than motivating or supporting students through a difficult subject.
forget gindt and all those other weird monsters inc creatures, take dyer. despite his weird anger issues and his lgbt obsession, this guy knows his stuff and makes you understand in the simplest ways possible. truly shows he knows his stuff. go to class, ask some questions, you'll be fine. his exams are very easy, and he's a very good grader.
Comes off a bit harsh sometimes, but overall a great professor and grades fairly. If you study, you'll do fine. Lectures are mostly from the textbook, but he explains it in a way that actually makes the material understandable.
Always loved profs who do what they say they would. First day of class Dr. Dyer plainly laid out HOW he tests and FROM WHERE his exams are based. Answer is primarily EVERYTHING COMING OUT OF HIS MOUTH. So he advised to audio-record his lectures and just revise your lecture notes again and again. time-consuming but gotta say it really does WORK!!!!!
Exams are based on lectures, and he provides a detailed study guide for each one. Online hw that counts like an exam grade. References Figs in the textbook; understand those and you'll score high. Make questions based on lecture notes! Bombed the 1st exam and had a great turn around on the next one doing all this. He is the only RIGHT choice!
I had never taken chemistry before this, so considering I got an A I'd say he does a good job at teaching the material. However he can be condescending and a little backhanded when he is frustrated with the class. However if you study, do well on exams, and chat with him when needed he's a nice guy and just wants to see his students succeed.
