nice guy. unreal expectations. tests will be easy if you already have a doctorate. many will begin, few (if any) will finish.
Nice, easy-going guy. Memorize book on your own; he lightly covers material, but tests are from entire book. Each test covers about 7 chapters. Corrected tests & quizes not returned in time to study from. Lab tests are blank pages, memorize all info.
I disagree with the others. I think he was very helpful, and if you listen in class then you can pass his tests no problem. He is very clear about what he expects from you. You do have to put forth some effort, but I do not think that is too much to ask.
He was very helpful and lots of fun. You have to memorize a lot in this class but he will give you quizzes to kind of jump start before the big test. All lecture tests are MC. Offers 10 extra credit points on each lecture and lab test.
Difficult class!Nice, however if he makes a mistake in telling you something and you put it on a test, he still marks it wrong saying you should've looked it up in the book. Do NOT take class if you value your GPA.Can be unfair.Know spelling of everything
The class was very challenging. He saves a ton of points for finals week. You have a 200pt lab practical and a 200pt lecture test in the last week!!!
elder is a hard professor. if you study day-in day-out, you might make an A. i took this class in 8 wks over the summer. BAD IDEA! if you want to learn a lot, take his class. if you're concerned w/your GPA, do not take his class. need to know everything for tests!
elder is very hard and not very helpful
Great teacher but hard. makes you learn and understand instead of memorizing the material
I studied 3-4 hrs, everday. ( i have a 3.5 gpa)Made a B by skin of my teeth. First day of class he said he wanted to weed people out from med. field. We finished with 8 students out of 30. Two still failed. His tests are extremley hard. I don't know where he pulled the ?'s from. Not the book.
Rambles quickly during lecture. Cares more about finishing the book than teaching the material. Belittles students in front of the whole class. Take this class if you want to pay somebody to make you teach YOURSELF. Memorize Everything. NO specific format. Bad bad bad
Easy going guy. Class is hard, covers ch.very fast. Lab is hard. Quizes every Lab day, memorizing is a must for this class. Leture test are very hard, study, study, study. Class started out with 40 people we now have about 25. Very hard Class but you will learn some!
This class is extremely hard. It's all memorizations. He pushes to much informationto fast. you are expected to memorize everthing in the book.He doesn't prepare your for the test.He assumes you have every chapter memorized.I was an A student but, failing this class.DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR.
Iif you are going to be a Dr. please take his class. if you are going to be a nurse or work in the medical field take someone else's class. Too much info to memorize in too little time, and he touches the dissected animals with his bare hands and haven't seen him wash his hands.
I want to know why this man is still teaching. He just rushes through his lectures and expects us to memorize the book. Exams are EXTRA HARD, Up to 6 chapt. He wasted my time and money taking his SORRY class. Class started with 40 people now 15. ELDER it's time to RETIRE! Or get FIRED!
Not concerned with teaching the material. Speeds through "lecture," if you can call it that.. Says to study for 1 thing, but tests on something completely different (including subjects he says not to worry about studying).. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. You'll have an extremely stressful experience.
HORRIBLE! this man like flunked out of medical school and wants to take it out on his students. tells the same stupid jokes everyday. ends lecture with "go study real hard..or drop the class.." dosnet give a crap about his students. wanted to hire a hit man "no one makes an A in my class"
nice guy but very hard. lecture exams are ridiculously hard. he tells you to study for one thing and then doesn't even put those things on the exam. no use in even studying because nothing you study is going to be on the exam. he also explains stuff and then he will take it back and say, "wait. it's the other way around." maybe a bit dislexic.

If you are really interested in learning Anatomy, this is your man! If you want an easy grade RUN! Mr. Elder is up front with what he will cover, provides opportunity for extra credit, and expects his students to keep up with the work. He is tough, but you will learn a lot. He gets a bad rap, but he is earning his money, and I got what I paid for.
Not a jr. college prof. This is a REAL College class- no wimps allowed. Want to learn and be a real college student? Take him- available anytime, gives needed info, you will learn if you want to! He gives you what you deserve. Lots of bonus pts. Don't miss a class and study hard- workable A !! Lots of info, but you will walk away ready for anything
Mr. Elder's class is very, very difficult, but if you come prepared to do what it takes, you'll learn a lot. He gives you every opportunity for success - you just have to work hard. Great teacher and always available. Stale jokes, but a funny guy! Lots of opportunity for bonus points and extra credit. Work hard and you'll make it.
Mr. Elder is a nice person, however his class is very hard. He goes too far, crossing subjects. After finishing I thought I had taken two classes at once. Don't take this class unless you are ok with Greek or you want to learn it.
I was excited to take anatomy because I love science classes. This is the first science class that I'm probably not going to pass. A couple of the reasons are he doesn't explain things well and he doesn't give any sort of review for tests. I do not recommend taking him for any class.
He is a great person, very nice and with a unique sense of humor! If you are one of those students who don't like challenges and take easy teachers to get A's without even working for it, then this class isn't for you! This class takes a lot of work and dedication from your part! If you deserved, you'll get an A.
There are too many poor reviews on here which are unjustified. If you're taking his Anatomy class you're probably planning on studying a health field at a four year institution and his class is fantastic preparation. It's not THAT hard, but it DOES require effort on the part of the student. Put in the time and you'll get an A.
These negative reviews are frustrating to me. Lots of pre-med and pre-nursing people who expect an easy ride. Well, those programs will be exponentially harder than his class. If you want to prepare yourself for those types of programs he's the ideal instructor. Pushes you to actually take some initiative and learn something. He's a good guy!
This guy does not give you an A, But he does NOT give you an F !! He gives tons of extra credit, is always available to help out, tough class (not a junior college class- regular university style!) If you think he's hard- don't go to nursing/OT/PT/or med school you'll fail! Work hard and get a study group, pays off we all got As!! Learn NOT Pass
Not an easy class, you have to work to earn your grade but it is worth it. You get out of class knowing you learned the material. Mr. Elder is a nice guy and gives you many opportunities to make points.
Great teacher, very difficult class but if you stick to it, you won't be disappointed! Many chances for bonus points, don't miss class, study smarter NOT HARDER! and you will do fine!
Seriously, this guy is very nice, and whoever says that he isnt, was a lazy and uninterested student... You should be shame about yourselves expecting easy rides for a hard class itself. Start using your brains cause your gonna needed.
I'm in nursing school right now and I'm using every bit of information I learned from this class all the time. Trust me, if you plan to go into healthcare, you definately need him as your teacher. "Study smarter not harder"
This guy is tough, but knows his stuff. We didn't go to college to have it easy right. Although, he does get sidetracked he is very informative, especially for those of us going into the medical field.
This teacher is gr8. This class is hard no matter who your professor is, but Mr. Elder's organization for this course is extremly good. I believe I was lucky to have had him as my professor in this course. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants a schedual that's steady and routine enough that you know what to expect.
He was very thurough I learned quite a bit from him. thanks
He is an awesome teacher always finding a way to add extra points to our not so good grades.
Unfair grading. Covers material way too fast. (2 or 3 chapters a class sound fun?) He requires you to remember a ridiculous amount of information for every test. I am taking this class again with another professor and I'm actually learning what I need to know. Would not recommend this teacher. Would recommend he retires or get better attitude.
do NOT take Elder for physiology. His lectures do not make sense. His tests are IMPOSSIBLE. I have made A's in all my science classes and failed all but one of his tests. I don't know where he gets the questions for his test, but they are not in the lecture, or the lecture notes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! The entire time he lectures he is looking at the ceiling tiles. Who knows what to study cause his powerpoints don't match his tests. He gave us a field trip way out in South Tulsa in rush hour traffic and then he forgets to show up. Didn't learn a thing.
Great sense of humor; liberal with points; taught from the book & power point presentations...study and do well
HORRIBLE!!! This is a self taught class if u take him. He wants u 2 know EVERYTHING. He teaches staight from power points n is vage on what he wants u 2 know. Dont take him unless u wanna bad grade.
This professor is rediculous! His test are immpossible! Offers lots of points but no review, no word bank, nothing extra. Counts off for spelling even though his power points are mispelled or wrong most of the time. Funny guy but not a good teacher.
If you are a visual learner and need an enthusiastic proffessor, James(Jim) Elder is best! I've taken this proffessor for Biology(for majors) and Anatomy. Gives Powerpoint& the handout for jotting; updates internet often. Is happy to answer questions in class!Little to no HW. STUDYFOR TESTS! Mr.Elder is excellent!
Took him for Bio for Majors. Great teacher. Class was kinda hard though. I would recommend him if you're a great student and you study more than most cuz you'll learn a lot. If not, this class will be a nightmare for you. I barely passed with a C He's a nice guy though. DONT MISS A LAB.
Classes of 19year olds are a problem. He does the best he can with an entry level science where most never took BIO or even CHEM in highschool & want to be babied.Merciful if you ask for help,(stay postclass, meet on off days) but do not wait until test day.Study the powerpoints.I never opened the book & got a B, but the classroom drama was too much
I would not recommend this teacher! If you like teachers that teach straight from a power point, give you NO review,NO extra credit, and answers NO questions either because he doesn't know the answer,or he doesn't respect you so he won't answer them fully, then TAKE THIS TEACHER! If you receive a grade you're confused about.GOOD LUCK.STUDY.STUDY.STUDY
Bio for majors. This was a really boring hard class and at the time I hated Mr. Elder. Since leaving his class I see how helpful he was. This is a class that you HAVE to study, study, study for or FAIL. Can be sort of confusing at times but just ask! Easy to pull yourself out of a bad grade. He makes it impossible to fail if you but the effort in!
Mr. Elder very consistently tested over the subject matter discussed in class. Use of power points was extensive and provided many answers to tests. Chapter review questions tended to turn up on tests.
Professor Elder was simply awesome, encouraging, practical, generous (gave bonus points), and obviously loves to teach. I absolutely recommend him! Yes, one needs to work hard in his class but he does not expect this out of malice, rather that his students should build a strong foundation. Simply awesome lecturer and definite mastery!
Mr. Elder is a great guy, but his lecture is hard to follow. Also there are no reviews for the test, which leaves you hanging when the test comes. He is a very intelligent person but once he gets going in lecture he tends to spit information faster than you can obtain. So it can be difficult, the main key to passing his class is read every chapter.
Mr. Elder loves to teach, however he is on a higher level so he is hard to undersdstand unless you already know about the subject. The tests are very hard but if you go to all the classes and labs you will do okay. He gives small assignments and some extra credit. Reads powerpoints word for word. Tests are over concepts. YOU HAVE TO STUDY HARD!!!!
He is the god awful worst professor i've ever had. If you like to do assignments and have the professor loose them so you recive no credit then take this class. He answers no questions because he doesn't know the answer and his lectures are simply the power points word-for-word. Tests are ridiculous with no study guide or help. DON'T TAKE COURSE!!!
This teacher is pretty hard. A lot of his questions on his tests are worded different than what he said or what you studied. Do not miss labs and the test are monsterous. Just be sure you study in all your spare time and read notes rather than the book. Watch how he words his questions. End of chapter questions are helpful.
His tests are ridiculous. He reads powerpoints word for word. You really have to teach yourself and study for hours to do well on his exams. Avoid him if you can.
I went in 3 wks after class started. He did everything he could to help me catch up. He did power pt. notes for us. We worked hard, but he was very fair. He let us know what we needed to do to be successful in his class.I would love to have him for a teacher again.
His class is hard.U have to study. Don't miss any lab or any class.u earn points everyday which would help you to keep your grade up. His tests are hard if you don't study. The term project is very easy. He offered extra points toward the end of semester.Study for this class. He's a nice guy!
I do not understand why everyone think Mr. Elder is so difficult. He is very up fron tabout what he expects and is very willing to help. I am glad to say that two years after taking his class, I was one of only five other students in a higher level science class that fully comprehended a scientific paper and doing research. He is a great teacher!
Mr. Elder is very enthusiastic about the subject, and his oklahoma biomes section at the end of the course is FUN, and can actually excite a person about this dull state.
Is a great teacher! Always willing to explain and help. Available outside of class for help. He makes learning biology fun... not to mention you WILL be prepared for more advanced biologies. Great! Espececially if you are going into medical field.
This professor is challenging but if you cant make atleast a B in his class then you should switch majors. In this semester he gave us 200 free points in open class quizes. always answers questions
I can't believe how many people are complaining about him! He is kind, funny, and knows his stuff. He gives SO much extra credit it's ridiculous! I had been out of college for 7 years before taking this class and passed with almost a 100%. You would have to make absolutely NO attempt in this class to not be able pass it. Just read & take notes!easy
Awesome teacher! Loved the class! Plan on taking him again for Human Physiology! He is enthusiastic about the work and seems to love what he does, which makes it easy to get into. He definately prepares you for science classes that follow. I would recommend Elder to anyone who wants to retain the information you learn!
Mr. Elder is a hard but fair teacher. Very excited about teaching. Tutors at Sam's Corner several days a week and will help you with whatever you need help on. Do not miss lecture or labs, "bonus" points are given. Test are hard but if you read your chapters and the powerpoint you will do fine. I will take another one of his classes.
Great teacher. Hard class but when you leave his class you have learned something. Study chapters & powerpoints. Mandatory lecture & labs (much info is covered daily) If written on board take your notes it will be on your test. Will help you if you help yourself (do the work/study) don't wait until the last minute. Highly recommend him.
do not take this teacher he is hard and the test are very difficult. no matter how hard i studied i never got above a d on his exams. quizzes and labs are what help you out. i passed with a C and was satisfied for it to be in his class
If you show up to all Mr. Elders lectures and labs there is no way you can fail this class. At the end of every class he gives questions that you answer with your peers and get points for them. His tests are hard but with all the extra credit I made a B. He is always available to help you. He wants you to succeed.
I can honestly say that I learned more in Mr. Elders class then I learned in all previous Biology classes combined. There is not a possible way to fail this course or even receive a low grade. He gives every student the opportunity to do well. Attendance is highly important for yourself and your grade.
I totally recommend Mr. E.! His class is NOT easy but you learn SO much. Attendance is important. No make up on Lab points. Take notes on everything he puts on the board, read the book, and study the power points. He likes to make you think hard. I thought about changing on the first day and am so glad I did not. I worked hard for my 88. U da bomb!
gives you a lot of easy points but his class is still pretty hard. if you don't go to class one day your grade could drop a ways. if you taking him, DON'T MISS!
If you want to pass this class make sure that it is the only one you take during that semester. He has a lot of information for you to learn in class and even more outside.
Mr Elder is great. I love his classes. He will help you but you must be willing to ask and to work for your grade. He is not easy but he WILL prepare you for the next class. Don't expect this to be an easy class. HUGE SUGGESTION: Go to he tutoring sessions and ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS!!! If you can't make it, make appointments to see him.
He is very helpful when it comes to needing extra help. Make sure you take good notes during lecture and lab.The only thing is we only covered the first sections of bio, we never even got to the second part of the book. He seems to be more interested in Micro Biology than anything else so if you are not going into micr I would find another teacher.

Physiology is hard, but he doesn't make it any easier. His tests are brutal. Mostly fill in the blank and some t/f or mult. choice.
Great teacher! This is not a blow-off class. If u want 2 make a good grade then u have to put forth an effort! Attendance to lab is very important! He doesn't take attendance @ lecture but u still don't want 2 miss it... I recommend this class if ur willing to study! Mr Elder is very nice and willing to help! And he loves to tease (in a nice way)!
Had him for anatomy and he was great. completely changed with phys. acts like students should already know material. teaches from PP slides, not from book. never gives full credit on labs. super hard tests (fill in blank/short answer/MC) funny, nice guy, but uber hard. would not recommend.
Mr. Elder is a nice guy but as a teacher I did not like him. He gave inconsistent information and if you asked a question he would tell you that you should already know or else dance around it till you are so confused you don't know what is correct. His grading is inconsistent too. If you work in a group you will have different grades. Pass!
Definitely a hard class. Mr Elder can be a little disorganized but listen to him, take notes, ask plenty of questions, and STUDY. He is so willing to help if you want it. You should have a good knowledge of Anatomy. He'll expect it. It is possible to get an A in the class.
I would recommend Mr. Elder to anyone that needs Physiology. In fact, I wish I had known about him earlier I would have taken all of his classes. He is hard, but he is very fair and wants to help!! He is available there for you, you just need to ask. You do have to study and read the chapters, but he makes class interesting. I recommend 100%
Everyone voting this professor down is just venting. He works hard every class and truly cares about the students. He shows up twice a week, every week for an open study session for over an hour. You can ask him anything you need to there, he is more than willing to help. I did not even take the final because I had so many points, still received A.
I took him for Physiology. I am a straight A student, I work very hard for my grades, and I am not a slacker. This man is just impossible. He is very disorganized, inconsistent, and if you ask him a question he sort of gives a bs answer if he's not sure. He also thinks he's never wrong. I made an 85% and by the end I was just happy it was over.
Do NOT take his class! If you want an A take a different teacher. He is very inconsistent with his grading, everyone in my lab group would have the same answers and someone would always get counted off that no one else did. We had a quiz every class, he said it was his way of taking attendance.
Tests are hard, assignments over every chapter and quizzes every class. Im usually an A student and I was happy I got out with a C
awful experience. i should have dropped but kept telling myself that with all the points i can still make a c. it didnt happen and had to take it again with another teacher. hes confusing, rude, and goes off on tangents that really dont relate and just make it confusing.
I actually took the class a couple of years ago now at least. Also took biology. I think Mr Elder is awesome. He always explained things for me. Very willing to help his students. I'm in nursing school now thanks to him. He has helped make me think and ask questions which is very much needed in nursing school.
Professor Elder is a very good teacher. He wants his students to actually learn the information and processes being taught so his students will be successful in future science courses. I worked very hard and received a B. I highly suggest attending every class and lecture. Easy is not always BEST.
This is a hard class that requires a lot of studying. I knew that going in but Mr. Elder made it so difficult. His tests are impossible to get an A and be ecstatic to get a C. I learned a lot more than my grade reflected. I suggest, seek another instructor, save yourself the frustration.
Jim is a excellent instructor. His test are geared toward critical thinking. If your use to Biology courses that only require straight memorization- you won't do well in his class. He does not give grades or pad them. He does offer bonus points on every test- but you have to know the material. I had him for Physiology as well. Great teacher.
Pick a different instructor!!!! I am a nursing student and apply myself in every class I take and my grade reflects it. He is knows what he is teaching, but does not teach it well. Found him condescending! I got a B but found he wasn't willing to help when help was needed or never answered questions that I had.
Elder is a great professor, he clearly knows he stuff and is passionate about the topics. He expects a lot out of his students but backs up that expectation with high quality lectures that keep you interested and a good amount of extra credit opportunities via short in-classopen book quizzes. One of the best professors I've had at TCC.
Mr. Elder is extremely passionate about Biology. He is entertaining, and lively. His tests are hard, due to the fact he makes you apply critical thinking to concepts discussed in lecture. As a nursing major this is exactly the kind of course I needed. Mr. Elder was also very helpful with providing feedback on questions missed on exams.
Jim Elder is a great professor. Expect to read the book and especially lecture powerpoints. Everything he writes or draws on the board will be on the exam, no doubt. Best part about this class are group quizzes. You'll most likely get A's on the quiz and lab since it's all group incorporated.
STAY FAR AWAY IF YOU WANT YOUR GPA IN TACT! No PP he writes FAST and sloppy on projector that is 85% unlegible. lecture is unstructured all over the place hard pre-tests that wont help on test Tests are way too hard. He'll teach one thing correct but tricks you making you use critical thinking to find the better answer. You will leave cheated!!
I spent the whole semester feeling confused. When presented questions he would refuse to answer or would answer with a silly riddle. This was one of the most frustrating classes that I have ever taken and I would not recommend it to my worst enemy.
One of the most knowledgeable professors I've ever had. He can be abrasive, condescending, and his tests are difficult. But he is also hilarious, kind if you reach out to him, and knows his subject matter like the back of his hand. He makes you work for your grade, but in the end you are better off for it. Complex gentleman with a great mind.
Very poor time management skills. He's demeaning. Prepare to hold over 10-20minutes after each class to fly through a whole chapter of power points. The first test of the semester is about 7-8 weeks in. The next 3 are all in the last month of class. Never gives a clear answer of what he wants. He gets frustrated when you ask a question.
Tough class, lots of material to get through. But all assignments and exams were open book. If you can print off the PP slides beforehand and take your notes right on them during lecture, you should be golden. He is very fair and understanding if you do have an issue. Very knowledgeable and approachable, he wants you to succeed in the class.
Professor Elder really knows his stuff. He is always trying to lighten the mood and make learning A&P more enjoyable. Most of his lectures comes from PowerPoints and quizzes/tests are all online. He givens plenty of extra credit but be ready for his pop quizzes. Professor Elder can be scatter brained at times, but he gets the job done.
Great professor, puts a lot of effort into his lectures although thy can be long and all the information can get you mind numb after the first few weeks. Very reasonable and wants to help you pass! Make sure to be in class he gives in house quizzes you cant retake!
Worst professor that I have ever sat in front of. Nothing will help you for the test. The book is worthless. Graded quizzes are worthless. Nothing will match the test he gives you. It's like he wants you to understand everything about biology but only gives you 10% to work with. I really don't understand. Feels like I signed up for a 16 week prank.
Mr, Elder's an old school professor. He writes out his thoughts on the board as he follows the powerpoint. He gives in class assignments and tests with tons of bonus but this means mandatory attendance. If you haven't taken bio in awhile, you may struggle but overall only problems were his explanations can be a bit confusing at times.
Mr. Elder has a quirky personality. He prefers the old style of teaching, and can be confusing at times, but he likes to go in-depth in what he covers. As someone who hasn't taken biology in a while, his class was tough, but Elder offers plenty of extra credit as relief. Exams are tough, so beware. Just study and show up because points add up fast.
Elder is a great/caring professor who knows his stuff! Attendance counts because of in class quizzes. Lots of opportunities for extra credit so pay attention. Just study via the key concepts and pay attention and you'll do great. He's willing to help if you don't understand and he's responsive to email. We didn't use the textbook(wasted my money).
I took Professor Elder in Fall 2023 for BIO1224. I haven't been in school for over ten years. This is the best professor to have after taking a long break from education. Professor Elder's lectures COME EXACTLY FROM THE BOOK. It's worth reading the chapters. He does not ask of you to read, but he mentions a lot "I can tell you didn't read." FUN GUY
Professor Elder can be a bit quirky, but his in-depth lectures are worth attending. Tough exams, but the extra credit and study tools like unstuck ai help a lot. Definitely a challenging yet rewarding class.
Terrible lectures and slides. Will spite you for missing one class and ensure you lose some amount of points. Terrible test questions that are often full of typos or unanswerable.
Good guy but the class is difficult.
