Jim has prepared his class over years of teaching. He is well-organized and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Jim is very approachable outside of class. He is not the easiest professor, but if you are serious about biology, Jim is the best.
Ellinger is an awesome teacher. You will work hard, learn, and come out of it with your money's worth. He is an asset to BCC... really enjoyed the class!!!
Ellinger is a tough teacher! Make sure you pay attention to his hints! Definetly recommend him!
Jim is a great teacher who is always ready to help. All you have to do is ask! He may make you work hard, but in the future you'll thank him.
He is a great professor! Knows the materials by heart and can explain very clearly. He makes you work hard, read before class, have sufficient no. of quizzes. But you learn alot.
Excellent grasp of Anatomy & Physiology. Wonderful examples given in class to clarify topic. Student should keep up with reading the course material/s. If you put in the time and effort to study, it will show. I learned a lot from this class.
Great professor. Very clear in his explanations. He really wants students to succeed, but the student has to meet him halfway. Lots of reading and comprehension. Learn the concepts. I found this class to be extremely fascinating. He's not easy but he IS worth it.

HARD, but very organized and clear. Definately not your usual 2nd rate community college instructor. Watch those multiple choice though, he's a tricky one.
He is very organized and gives you all the tools you need to do well. But you have to work for it. His tests are tough, but again, he gives you all that you need to know, you just have to learn it. Extra credit opportunities are worth doing.
Not too bad, lots and lots of quizzes and tests, no homework. Provides some extra credit, tests are of medium difficulty.
can somebody please tell how's are her quizes the format and all that? how's she is grading ? this would be a great help if you can write something about it. thankyou
Great professor, very clear in explanation. Class is hard, lots of exams, and questions are tricky. Make sure you understand the concept completely. Definitely recommend him. First day in class, he said you need to put in 30 hr a week in order to get an "A" in the class, and he's not kidding about that.
Phenomenal teacher! Extremely knowledgable, ALWAYS available (spends 14 hrs/day at BCC!) He definitely brings that "something extra" to the classroom that only a special few teachers have. From his sense of humor, to his fondness for wearing Hawaiian shirts and fishnets, to his passion for Jody Foster and microbrews, he totally ROCKS!
Jim is excellent! Very difficult, but his expectations are clear. Quizzes a couple times a week, keeps you reading the book. Tells the same jokes a couple times, but they'e funny. Talks like he's had a shot of novocaine in his mouth, likes drinking, and wears fishnets for Halloween. Speaking from experience, between Jim and Sandy Elliot, take JIM!
Terrible teacher. Continually stops regular lecture to inform class that they are all not working hard enough and are all going to fail. Makes everything harder by using very difficult multiple choice questions from another text book than the one that you are told to buy (google them!).
Easy class. Jim forces you to learn, which is a good thing. He is not an easy instructor, but if you read the book and focus it's straightforward. He is just plain awesome.
Ok as a person, but as a teacher, I found him unprofessional. If he just taught from the text, it would be tolerable; but his opinionated, derogatory remarks about Creation and God make for a hostile learning atmosphere. Most teachers do not cross over the line and are not so prejudiced.
Ellinger is VERY clear about what he wants you to study, writes up chapter notes and during lecture emphasizes what he finds important. He also screens chapters of information he doesn't care for. His tests are tricky though, but if he sees that you are trying and improved, he takes that into consideration for your final grade. Very fair teacher.
he is the best tiacher I have ever had. He is very clear with what he is going to give you in the next quiz. His examples help to memorize so many new things from the class. Take him...
He'll guide you towards what will be on the test but that doesn't help you because his multiple choice Q's are ridiculously impossible and are given as HE see's it, not how the textbook teaches you. You may think you know the info inside and out, but as soon as you see his Q's you'll be just as confused as if you had never seen the material. NOJIM!
Took 261,262, and 202 with him. My experience in all of his classes was the same: excellent. He is the most effective teacher I have ever had. Attendance is mandatory, as is regular studying of the material; if these requirements are met, a good grade is attainable and enjoyable. For the serious student, you simply cant get any better.
As a person, hes fine. But as a teacher, it will truley be hell on earth in his class-just for a bio101 class. You can know the information inside out, read, study, do all of the above, but it still wont be enough unless you understand his different and difficult stlye of teaching.
I love biology so maybe that has an impact on my learning but this class isnt as hard as some people make it out to be. Just attend class regularly and study a little everyday and you'll be fine. Jim is very clear in his lectures and gives many examples and some extra credit oppuritunities too. He's also pretty funny. Its a good class to take =]
VERY FUNNY, PROFESSIONAL, RELAXED. OUTLINES COURSE CONTENT VERY CLEARLY BY WEEK, WITH EXACT OBJECTIVES. PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR POINTS. GOOD CLASS!
Don't take if you want an easy A or you don't really care about science. Jim wants you to have a real broad scope of biology so there is a lot of material. Be prepared to study HARD. Jim's lectures are very clear and he is approachable if you need help.
An excellent teacher. Is extremely organized, you will never be guessing on what will be covered in class. He expects a lot form his students it is not an easy course. If you study what he outlines, and put forth a a good effort there will be no surprises.
He must be a good psychologist! He knew what his students were thinking. He is pusher. His exams and quiz are not easy. Try to understand what he taught, not just memory. I like the way that he taught. If you have test anxiety, his frequent quiz will let you overcome it. I highly recommend to take his class. Extra credits will raise your grade.
I did not do super well in his class, BUT i wasn't applying my self fully! He was one of the best teachers ever! I do have to say if you don't study EVERY DAY you will do poorly on tests! Make sure to take notes especially when he says its going to be on the test/quiz, He really puts down what he says as a question Dont be afraid to ask him things
Funny guy, knows his stuff. He expects you to know it, too (quiz/tests are brutal). Hard to get a good grade, but gives small E.C. consistantly Don't miss a thing he says. Expect to work like you have never worked before. I am NOT disappointed, however. If you pass his class with a good grade, you can be whatever you want to be!

Extremely knowledgable instructor. Took him for 260/261. Made an A in both courses, but it was incredibly difficult. I'm a smart guy, but had study several hours daily and had to spend additional time on the weekends to prepare. Test are VERY "tricky". By his own words "there are easier options out there". However, he his extensive medical knowledg
Jim is a really funny guy and a very smart guy. He knows his stuff and he expects you to know it too. If you pay attention in class, read the book, and study really hard you will do fine. If you can't stand stress, don't take him, but if you want to truly learn A&P TAKE JIM, but he is for sure VERY HARD!
I got A both on 260 and 261 with him. I've never studied hard like this. But It is worth! His tests are extremely challenge. Be strong enough with him. He is an attractive teacher. Go with him!
Don't just follow the course objectives like he says. Study it all!! If he says he'll test on one specific area, don't believe him. Quizzes aren't too hard but exams are extremely tough. I'd advise anyone to take this class alone. You will need to focus all your time and energy on it in Jim's class.
Knowledgeable teacher who enjoys what he does. Tests are very hard, but if you study hard and listen to lectures, you will do fine. Has extra credit that helps if you have a bad day. Overall, an excellent teacher.
Ellinger is the ideal instructor. You work for the grade you get, but he actually teaches the material with humor and intrege. Gives E.C. and listens to you if you think you got something right. Great teacher! I would take any subject from Jim.
Ellinger is amazing! He definitely makes you work like mad and there will always be a few multiple choice that are painful, but it is so worth it. I learned a ton from this course and feel like I'm ready for what is ahead, thanks to him! Study really hard, put the time in (a lot), and an A is not impossible--EC helps with this too.
I managed an A in both classes, but it was not easy. Make sure to take good notes, be hyper-aware of the objectives he assigns, then study it all until you can explain it to a little kid. Then you'll be fine on the tests. ( : The tests are hard, but if you've really thought about it, and not just memorized, you should do fine. That being said, he
The best teacher I've ever had. As hard as A&P is, this man will make even the greatest slacker interested!!Very specific on what is expected on exams, keeps your attention throughout the class,down-to-earth guy, and yes, extremely smart.Totally recommend it!
Very hard class, he provide his student with outlines but basicly you have to study everything. His tests are hard because of the wording he uses to confuse you. Quizes are not so hard, straight forward. Overall, Jim is pretty cool teacher, would recommend him to anyone interested in taking his classes.
He is the best biology teacher in the school hands down. Its hard, but you remember it. Most of what I needed to learn for harder classes I learned from him first. Would absolutely take classes from him again.
I love this class, you always learn something new. For those of you who want to have the easy ride through this class is not for you but for those you want to learn and have fun, take this class, several extra credit options. Dr. J is the best teacher for this class.!!!
awesome prof! he's willing to answer questions and gives you outlines. tells you what to expect on the quizzes. he wants you to learn and isn't trying to trick you or anything. he's an interesting teacher and uses good/funny analogies. i'd definitely take more of his classes!
Dr. J is the best teacher you will ever have!!!! I do not recommend this class to anyone looking for a quick and easy lab science though. He makes you work for your grade!!!
Jim is an awesome professor! He gives you a clear objective and tells you what to study for exams and quizes. He is funny and def not boring. Do not take his classes if you plan to slack because there is no room it, its a hard course and jim gives you hard exams! Learning is fun in his classes and he is very helpful. Also gives extra credit out;)
Hard but very smart!
I definitely put in a lot of effort to get an A in his class, but I learned a lot from Jim! He is very intelligent and is extremely helpful with questions. His notes were very ORGANIZED and his study guides were great for preparing for exams. I'd recommend him to anyone interested in taking biology! I also hear that he's great at teaching A&P
GREAT teacher. I'm taking him for the second part of A&P. DO NOT slack off, ALWAYS tell him if you will be absent (HE KNOWS EVERYONE'S NAME AND WHETHER THEY SHOW UP OR NOT), and pay very close attention to what he says. He's like Santa, he knows if you're sleeping (instead of studying) and he knows when you're awake (studying) AMAZING TEACHER.
If you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best. Jim will push you to study more than you have ever studied and to be accountable for your own success/failure. But by doing so, you will learn more than you would in any similar class and you will be prepared to compete with the best of them. I highly recommend taking this class!
He is the best teacher and he knows his stuff! I have never studied so much and so hard just to get a B. I really enjoyed the class and had him for both sections of A&P. I would recommend him to anyone who is going into any profession in health care because he will teach you all you'll ever need to know. Make sure to read the book!!!
Dr.J is the best! He is totally the Dura Mater but he definitely wants to make sure you know the stuff. You can ask questions at anytime and he'll always help you! EXCELLENT teacher but be sure and read your book BEFORE going to class, he'll know if you haven't.
Jim is amazing! I took another professor for 241 who was much more slack. Ellinger is very knowledgeable, funny and uses a variety of techniques to help clarify the material. He expects a lot from his students but you know the material when you are done. Show up to class and take advantage of any extra credit he offers. Take Jim for A&P!
Dr. Ellinger's teaching ability is surpassed by few(if any). He is intelligent, funny, and compassionate. Lectures are organized and after taking this class, you really want to PDA A&P. His A&P class is not for sissies. Be prepared to learn!
I didn't find him very clear. Happened few times he wanted something else on the test that was on the objectives required for the test. You'll have a quiz, or exam almost every single class. Wouldn't take him again - not that I mind working hard, it's about his personality, wants to be superfunny and cool - sorry, didn't work for me.
Simply don't take him and you will be fine!!
Excellent Teacher. He will kick your butt all quarter but he is extremely fair. No surprises on quizzes/exams and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Attend class every day, study notes and objectives and you can get a good grade in the class. (also, the quarter will not be relaxing but will be completely worth it in terms of learning)
If taking quizes and studying everyday is you're thing, than go for it, but this guy is a heavy exam nazi.
Dr. Ellinger is the best professor at BC! he is very smart and explains everything well, but his exams are too hard! he will kick your butt the whole quarter, Quiz almost everyday and is hard to get an A. If you really want to learn take Dr. J, if you want to get an A take another class. Got C from him, but will definitely take his class again :)
WONDERFUL teacher, in fact probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. Lectures are clear and animated, lots of extra credit. Don't let him scare you at the beginning of the quarter - just work hard (look over his outline before class, skim textbook, etc) and you'll do fine! He truly cares about his students!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Hard but if you study the objectives given you'll do well.
I had him for biology 241 and 242. He's intelligent and resourceful. He has some kind of photographic memory. He's helpful, too. His classes are not easy! I had to work hard for it. He could be intimidating but it is not too bad. He just wants students to learn! I recommend him if you are seriously about learning.
He has a clear and concise way of presenting material throughout his class which I'm sure has comes from all of his years teaching. It's a difficult class, he's not very supportive if you need help, and has an arrogant attitude. His "I'm the best and funniest" attitude didn't work for me. Kind of reminded me of high school teachers.
This class is extremely hard already and with him it becomes your life. If you want an easy A that you don't want to work for don't take him. He is a good lecturer but his exams are difficult. Quizzes are not too bad. Extra credit opportunities should always be done. Overall the knowledge you gain is worth taking his class.
Great teacher if you want to learn the material well
His egotistical and holier than thou attitude didn't work for me.
He is not spportive and has arrogant attitude. He expect his student to be so smart and understand all his teaching. he does not like explaining topic twice and does not like Asian student.
Dr.J is probably the best instructor to take A&P with. He seems unapproachable at first but he warms up to you. Very clear and knows what he wants from you and can answer any question. Will listen to you if you have questions about your quizzes and gives points back if necessary.
Jim's an excellent instructor. His class is demanding, requiring total committment. No freebies or surprises. Exams/quizzes are tough - you must have an intimate knowledge of the material to do well. Jim's support, knowledge and experience really help. If you want to learn and not just memorize, take his class!
He's a really good teacher, not biased - all you need to do is studying. He is not tricky, even thou class is not super easy. Does a lot of quizzes - very helpful - keep you on track. After taking other bio teachers at BC - can say he's the best.
Dr. J is a very good teacher. He is tough, but he lets you know what is expected from you. A&P is not an easy subject so whoever you take it with it will be hard, but Dr. J makes sure you are prepared and know your stuff when you leave his class. Don't take him if you want an easy A
I took DR J for both sections of A & P. I really enjoyed his class, Not an Easy A but if you study hard pay you should do great. I got an A and B+. really close attention to the objectives, He will let you know which ones are on the test. You need to EAT,SLEEP AND BREATH A & P. it will come in handy later for future class.
Subject matter is HARD. Dr. J is known to be one of the hardest instructors in A & P. Grade based 100% on quizes and tests, and even the labs are timed tests. You will spend 3-5 hours a night reviewing material in addition to class time. There are easier teachers, and if you are struggling he will not help you...but he is a fair grader.
I have not taken a better teacher. A very demanding class, hard tests, weekly quizzes (sometimes 2 or 3), but you will not find a better teacher that teaches this course. Tough class and professor, but I would take him again.
BIO241 with Dr. J is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. But if you are motived to do well in the class you will. DO NOT take this class if you are looking for an easy A.
Hardest teacher in AP on campus
Jim is a great teacher. If you want an easy A take someone else. If you want to be prepared for your job in the health care field take Jim. Go to class every day read the text book, and study his notes, you will do fine. His tests are hard and expects you to really understnad the material though. A&P in general is not easy. Take his class!
One of the best professors I have ever met. He is very passionate for what he teaches. A damn hard class but it's worth it in the end.
Subject is interesting. It is obvious that no one takes this class if they are not going to the healthcare field, so you are taking it to work hard and learn. He is not the most approachable but does help if you ask. I love how always handed out your grade sheet after every test/assignt/quiz. Hard but offers extra credit, so DO IT! Great professor.
Excellent instructor. Will teach you not only A&P, (including topics you will need in health care not covered by others) but test taking. Cares enough to push students to excel. Test challenging but enough extra credit to cover learning curve. Every lecture a gem; like going to a movie! If you take your education seriously, he's the one to choose.
Simply THE BEST. Class notes = blueprint for your professional program. Fabulous lecturer, time flies when you're listening. Hard tests but teaches test-taking skills and enough extra credit you can learn this w/o penality. Don't bring spoon expecting to be fed! Do your work & he'll help you thru stuck places. Wish I could take him for every class.
Learn from Dr. J. You will be thankful you did. This class requires tons of studying but if you are taking it, you need to remember this stuff. So thankful that I learned from him. Make no mistake, he is tough. If you aren't dedicated to learning this, you will not and should not pass. Among one of my favorite teachers at BC.
He is AMAZING! He cares about helping students and you will want to keep his notes for when you are in your program. Get to know him. This man is the best.
Omg! He is such a hard professor. I understand that taking any 242 course would be difficult but the way the teaches is way too difficult to comprehend. Things he says in lectures were hardly on exams. I would never take his class again. The most hardest professor on campus.
His introduction to this class is spot on. Definitely be there for the first day. In my experience at BC, Dr. Jay has been the best professor. He's very hard, but you walk out of his class ready for anything to be thrown your way. His lectures are AWESOME, never fell asleep once. I highly suggest taking any class from him.
Dr. J is the best teacher I have had at BC. He is a super hard teacher, but if you put in the work he is more than happy to give extra help if needed. I took A&P 1 and 2 from him, and learned so much in his A&P classes, and I feel he really helped me prepare for nursing school.
AWESOME instructor if you want a rock solid learning base. Wish he taught everything. Helpful if you do the groundwork; impatient if you expect spoon feeding. Excellent presentation skills, excellent summaries of A&P knowledge that I still use in my health sci program. Frequent quizzes and grade reports keep U on track. Lots of EC. . A++ teacher.
Dr. J is a great teacher. His lectures are clear and I do well with his objective based approach. His quizzes keep you studying. His exams are tough, but doable. Don't let him scare you, just work hard and you will do great. He does a good job at getting the material into long term memory. Got an A on the final with minimal studying.
Dr. J is an amazing instructor. Make no mistake; this class is difficult, but you will leave the class having learned so much. He takes the class seriously and he expects you to take the subject matter seriously, but has a comical side to him as well. If you want to take an A&P class that stays with you, take it with Ellinger.
Fascinating course. Text is excellent though highly specialized; instructor makes complex topic clear and accessible. Highly, highly recommend this class to anyone with interest in cancer or just in learning how to understand scientific papers and to give presentations. Dr. J is one of (if not the) finest instructors I've ever had.
Great teacher very difficult class subject. But he will do his best to explain everything that needs to be learned for the test. Great teacher.
Favorite teacher at BC. His foundational approach is crucial for professional health care programs. A Seattle University nursing PhD stated: "A&P is everything". Necessary for pathophysiology, pharmocology, and medical diagnosis as you continue your studies.
Don't mess with Dr. J! He is funny and is crystal clear during his lectures. Even though attendance is not mandatory, his lectures are very helpful so try to go as much as you can. He quizzes a lot but that benefits you in the long run when you prepare for exams.
Quizzes become a regular thing, tests pretty much once a week or so. Provides lecture outlines and study guides which is helpful. Seriously knows his stuff, if you need help you'll have to ask. Expects 3 or more hrs outside of class. Mini reviews before exams (bring questions in for him to answer). Grade is completely dependent on quizzes & exams.
Now that I'm a 4.0 nursing student, I appreciate the foundation Dr. J gave me in A&P even more than when I was taking the class... and that was a lot. Don't whinge about how he teaches. He's giving you the tools to succeed in your program.
Lots of quizzes but they help to prepare for the tests. Tests are handed back the next day. Really difficult class; you can't study enough.
Awful teacher. He is very discouraging and goes off on random tangents often. Would NOT recommend to anyone.
Expect to spend hours studying. Say goodbye to your social life if you want to succeed. His tests are tough, so you need to pay attention to details and be able to apply the material. With all that said, Dr. J really knows his stuff, is passionate about the topic, and his lectures are well organized and interesting. Recommended.
Its called A&P. Its not supposed to be easy. Professor is very straightforward and organized. A model professor. Memorize the lecture notes and you will be fine.
Dr. J is the best. I honestly LOVE A&P because of him. He quizzes up to three times per week and gives tests often. Although it is a lot of work to keep up with all of this, it really helps in the end. If you are taking A&P TAKE IT WITH DR. J! He will be tough but he will really make you learn the material.
This professor was not great. He is very knowledgeable but very harsh. He barely gives you a chance and makes you feel belittled. He constantly told us we were doing horribly and that most of us were probably going to fail. He creates a stressful environment and I would not recommend taking him.
Dr. J is an okay teacher, difficult subject but that's to be expected of A&P. The thing is, he's very rude. Stops class all the time to tell everyone how awful we are, that if we were his x-ray technursedoctor, he would request another one, etc. He berates us for not participating, but belittles us when we do. Overall, just a giant jerk.
Gives an added 5% in extra credit, clear guidelines, was never surprised in this class. You must take it with him if you are going into the medical field. You will get the most out of taking it from him. Not easy but well worth the effort. No wasted time. Not for people who skim through class. Hard work required but not unbearable (ie med school)
Tough but funny. Lots of white board items that are on exams (so can't miss class). Great detailed outlines, serve as guidelines for quizzes n exams. Quizzes every other day n exams every 2 wks. Study outline for quizzes. Read book for exam. Quizzes are okay, exams are hard. No real labwork, more as FYI. No hw. Lots of extra credit. Fair grading.
Very discouraging. Right off the bat he said he knew who would fail & if he ever got one of us when he's a patient he would request for a new nursedoctoretc. During lecture he goes off on random tangents & his objectives are not always whats on an exam. Would NOT recommend his class to anyone. I came in interested in A&P but now I hate it.
Yes, Dr. J's class is hard. But we're all going in to health care! It's tough material and we need to know it. I've worked hard and I will be finishing the class with an A. He gives a ton of extra credit so if you do your work, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. You will leave knowing the material and will be set for your program.
Jim is a great teacherprofessor. He is really nice and if you are straightforward and polite he is really helpful. I would take him again. He really makes sure you know your stuff. I know some people who took him who dropped him and said they didn't like him but honestly if you can't take his class you might as well not major in sciences.
I really respect this teacher a lot. Not only did I learn about A&P, but also to be diligent and work hard for what I want. He may seem like a jerk, but deep down he truly cares about his students and will help you if you are working hard! Highly recommended! A highly inspirational prof! Lazy people should not take his class or go into healthcare.
He's tough but he give tons of extra credit. His exams get you ready for NCLEX questions you have in nursing school and to get your RN license. Save his charts! Don't ask questions until you've tried to answer them yourself. I'm coming back to rate him after one year of nursing school-his teaching helped me to be at the top of my class.
Ellinger's class was very difficult, and when I approached him on 2 different occasions, he never even responded.
Pros: Amazing lecturer, extremely knowledgeable on material. Answers all questions, via email he replies very fast. Quizzes and tests get graded and handed back next day. Plenty of extra credit. Cons: Tests are brutal, a lot of "guess what I'm thinking" questions. Has almost NO labs. Not even close to the REQUIRED lab hours for the class.
He really does know his stuff but will readily belittle you if you are not performing well in the class. The lectures are long (brutally long) with no breaks and if you leave for even a minute you will be far behind. Also, exams are brutal (and you will have them often). I have had tough teachers before but he's the worst BC has to offer.
Amazing instructor, one of the best I've ever had. Lots of EC, super clear on what he wants on exams. This class is HARD (3-4hrs/day studying) but will lay the foundation for your career. Show you are making an effort and he will help, but if you aren't giving it your all he will come down on you or ignore you. Dr. J is not for sissies!
Dr. J is fantastic. He quizzes nearly every day and tests frequently. Hard tests, but he is very clear about what he wants you to know. You will learn the material, but be prepared to work hard for it. He is funny and very helpful. Try your best and he will like you.
He's not polite... but neither are patients, so get used to it now? He knows his stuff, and will spend time on you if you show you're spending lots of time on his class. Even skipping one class can ruin you, so don't do it. Follow the objectives when studying. Do his supplemental worksheets frequently. Audio recordings helped me a lot.
Awesome teacher! Great at explaining things in a way that makes it easy to understand! Always study notes after the lecture and use the outlines that he provides. Reading the book helps too. I took him for A&P 1 and will be taking him again for A&P 2!
The A&P series was hands down the toughest thing I've ever done, but honestly, it's such a complex topic that I'd be concerned if it were easy like some profs seem to make it. Dr. J is extremely tough, but if he can tell that you care, he'll do his best to help you succeed. Don't take his class if you aren't willing to dedicate yourself to it.
You shouldn't take this class with him if you want an easy A. There are tons of quizzes, but they help you to understand the concepts. I wish I took his class in bio241 too. He's very organized, quick, knowledgeable, helpful and make himself availble for questioning. He is great.
Here's the thing, A&P is going to be hard no matter what. However, Jim is the best professor for this class. He is tough. He rides you. There are weeks where there are 2 exams and 2 quizzes. But it is well worth it. What he says, is what's on the exams & extra credit is provided in every instance. Jim teaches in a way that makes it stick, take him.
A&P is going to be tough no matter who you take it with. Honestly, Ellinger knows his A&P. He is tough and beyond demanding. I would not recommend taking his class with micro or really any other class. Come to every class prepared with questions. He will tell you "I wrote the the test, ask me questions!!"
Here is the A & P in reality. Right of the bat Dr J. will tell you that you should eat and breath A & P for the whole quarter. He really meant it, cause you will be immersed in it and forget your life. If you are a complainer and a sissy, I advise to stay away. Get ready for tons of quizzes and exams. After all these will help you stay in track.
Dr. J will challenge you, but his class is doable. He offers a great amount of extra credit to make up for his tough exams. Read book for exams and aim for 100% or more on quizzes. There were plenty of A students in my class. Study every night and you will do fine. Dr. J seems cold, but he really does care about the subject and your hard work.
I had this instructor in preparation for medical school. I am a first year medical student now and I lean on a lot of HOW and WHAT I learned in this class to be successful now. He doesnt like excuses, but he respects hard work. Do the work and youll get the results!
Amazing professor!! He explains the hardest concepts in the simplest ways. He lays out exactly what needs to be done and has regular quizzes every week to keep you on track of the work. He makes A&P easy to understand. He is a hard grader but thats because he wants you to really know the material.
I can't even express how much respect I have for Dr. J. He is hands down the best teacher I have had in my entire life. He gives you everything you need to succeed, you just need to put in the work. I have never met someone so passionate about teaching, he is walking treasure. He may retire soon, so please take him while you can; you won't regret
Dr. J is the best teacher that I ever had. I took him for 2 quarters of Human Anatomy and Physiology. You may have to put a lot of effort in his class, but in the end it is worth it. He was very passionate and shares funny stories. he is willing to help you in every way that he could do, sometimes almost give you everything on the exam.
Horrible teacher. Extremely and unnecessarily rude. Would never recommend to anybody.
Horrible, thats all I have to say. Hes rude and a horrible teacher. Dont take him.
Dr J is a pretty good teacher, but he is very rude. I would not recommend him.
He did a subpar job at actually teaching. His teaching I would have given an average review for, but Im rating him as awful because of how disrespectful he is. He makes students sound dumb when they raise their hand. On your first day of class he will tell you how many students have failed in the past (why is that something hes proud of?)
If it is clear that you are putting in the time with this class, he is respectful. If you clearly are not and come to him with your sob story, he will be very blunt. I witnessed this scenario. He doesn't sugar coat things and is very honest. He is tough but so are the health programs we are applying to. These aren't professions for whiners.
Dont take him.
Isnt the worst teacher in the world, isnt very good either. Hes pretty harsh to the non smart kids. Makes you sound stupid when you raise your hand to ask a question.
Horrible.
Rude and a horrible teacher
He is extremely inconsiderate and makes you sound stupid when you ask a question
Extremely horrible! Do not take his class.
Just an overall terrible professor, who cares for a few students and couldn't care less about others. 2 weeks into the class he pulled me aside and while smiling told me I failed our first test and that he believed I was a terrible student who could not achieve anything in his class and that I was probably going to flunk if I continues taking it.
Jim doesnt care about any of his students except for the insanely smart kids. Hes extremely unsupportive and rude. Tries to trick you on tests and makes them way harder than they should be. Dont waste your time and money on him. Take someone like Norman or Dennis if you want to have a good experience.
His quizzes and tests are loaded with trick questions. He loves talking about how many people have failed his class, and how if most of us were his doctor he would request a different doctor. Very rude and condescending. If you enjoy rude instructors who belittle you every day and tell you how awful of a student you are, then take him.
Im usually a straight A/B student and I nearly failed his class. Studied for his class hours every day, but wasnt able to complete all the trick questions he puts on exams. Please dont take him, he makes the class way harder than it already is.
I literally dont even want to take the time to write a review for this jerk. Rudest teacher Ive ever had. Would not recommend him to anybody.
Disrespectful and unpleasant teacher
Dont get me wrong, Jim is a good teacher. But he is extremely disrespectful. Im a quite and reserved student but he was still rude to me. Super hard to talk to outside of class.
Dr. J is a great professor, he gives us a lot of mnemonics to help us remember tough material like bones and characteristics of the nervous system. He's generous with extra credit and very accessible outside of class-- if you decide to show up early, he's there both before and after lectures. Has review sessions before tests, great professor!
Dr. J is definitely a very straightforward teacher. It is off putting, but if you show that you are working hard, he gives you respect. The course material is very challenging and he does his best to explain it in such a short time period. Its not necessary, but I highly recommend getting the textbook to supplement his lectures and clarify things.
I understand where students may believe that he is harsh on students, but he genuinely wants the best for his students. The material isn't easy, so if you're not trying, then Dr. J will notice and won't expect much from you. This class requires your full attention and you will have to sacrifice social outings, but it's worth it.
A&P is not easy. You will need to put a LOT of time and effort in this class, but it will pay off. He is always available to help students before and after class. Lectures always contained important and relevant info. He is an experienced professor that knows how to teach A&P well. I highly recommend him if you want to thoroughly understand A&P.
Dr. J is a unique bird. He knows his stuff and he expects students to be serious. He does not coddle his students, so be prepared to work hard if you want to pass and definitely if you want an A. He gives tons of extra credit. He loves the subject and I feel well prepared for my schooling future after taking his class.
Dr. J is rude and makes the class harder than it already is. Because hes rude, it makes it harder for me to want to talk to him and ask him for help. Im a A/B student who tried hard in everything I do but I do not Dr. J whatsoever!!!
Okay, everyone here is belittling Dr J, but from what I've heard from taking him, he's a really nice person. Yes, he does insult people sometimes, but that's because the majority of the class knows that they need some of it. That's why 10 of the class dropped it, but if you stay, he becomes super nice because he knows you like the subject. Take him
Dr. J is rude which makes it harder to learn. I studied hard and passed the class but just because I got an A, doesn't mean I would take a class with him again. It's not all about the grade but it's also teacher respect. Would not recommend!
Dr. J most definitely know his stuff. But, he prides himself on making the class more difficult than other teachers at BC do. His exams have many trick questions and we had two weeks where there were two huge exams per week plus normally scheduled quizzes. If you dont do well on those four exams it completely bombs your grade. Beware.
Dr. J is the absolute best professor that I've ever taken. I'm currently in the BC nursing program and the knowledge of AP2 I gained from Dr. J is so crucial in nursing. You actually retain what you learn. Do not expect an easy pass--attend lecture and take notes, but Dr. J makes test outlines clear and gives you exactly what you need to succeed
asks questions on exams and quizzes that were never covered in class and expects you to be able to cover an unreasonable amount of content and remember exact little detail. I am basically a straight A student and this B- was the worst grade I ever got and I tried my hardest. My class started off with 32 students and ended with 14 including me.
Wouldnt recommend to anybody
Tests are based entirely off of lecture outlines/objectives, the optional practice worksheets, and ACRONYMS that are presented in lecture (which is why attending class to get those acronyms is impt). Plenty of extra credit, txtbk is supplementary. Dr. J is caring, responsible, fun, and returns assignments in super timely manner!! Best prof ever.
Dr. J is the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He is not easy at all & will not sugar coat anything. His expectations are very straight forward & gives a lot of room for extra credit. Sit in the front of the class, take very good notes, record his lectures & take his class seriously. I still reference his lectures 3 years later.
