Go to his office for help on essays... he helps alot!!!
One word for ya SATAN
No Comments
hes pretty good.. not that hard, just get extra help from him
lectures are virtually worthless, but amusing. if you write well, there is really no need to go to class except for the sheer pleasure of hearing him ramble.
he is a freak of nature...quite sick in the head. if you dont mind listening to his nonsense, the class is ok, but otherwise, steer clear
He is an all around great teacher. He is concerned on how well you do. Get to know him, and you will learn that he is a great guy. My classmates and I enjoyed him, and we all realized that it was one of the best classes we had our freshman year.
Very, very nice guy. Kinda out there, but really shows concern for his students. Grades essays pretty hard. (He is a grammer nut.)
I loved him. He really made the stories modern and intersting to me. He was a great guy who wanted to get to know all his students. I got a B and never stressed.
He gives TONS of extra credit. I like how he goes over the plot in class. Doesn't believe in reading comprehension tests/quizzes. Gave us the questions on our midterm a week in advance. Very interesting man.
Stutters. Very annoying. What he goes over in class doesn't have much to do with writing papers. Hates to give tests. Gives test questions before the test. Grades papers like everyone should be an English major. Funny though. Likes baseball.
the guy's a total weirdo, but willing to help all his students. if your grammer sucks don't take his class or you'll end up with a negative grade. but on the bright side he's the best english teacher i've ever had.
wierdo. but very nice. he will help you out. an a is very possible
Can be strange, but a good teacher. Very interesting ways of teaching-not too much lecturing. Pay attention and you'll do ok. And don't be afraid to ask for help-he's very willing!!-I loved him-he was great.
This man is awesome, he is totally willing to sit down and just chat, sometimes his stuttering can get annoying. It's not easy but no great books class at AU is. If you can deffinatly try to take him... I'm not the best writer but he accepts rewrites.
I thought he was going to be impossible at first but he turned out to be a great professor! He's always willing to help and accepts rewrites. Kinda strange, but overall he's really nice. If you show him you care about your grade, he'll let you slide.
This guy is a complete jerk and all he did was hit on all of the girls in our class. This guy is absolutely annoying beyond belief as well.
Is tough on your essays, but is so nice and willing to help if you bring it to him before it's due. Allows rewrites, don't really have to go to class all the time, but he likes you better if you show up most of the time and make some sort of effort.
I had him for Success Strategies, not English or Great Books. I'm taking him for English next semester, though. He loves to get to know his students and is very helpful. He likes to hear your opinion and wants a class that talks with him. Great teacher
Impossible not to get an A if you turn in all the papers. Lots of free extra credit. Work and you'll get a lot out of his class.
My absolute favorite teacher! He's very helpful, understanding, and sympathetic with needs of students. I think he really cares about each of us. And he still remembers you years after you take his class.
Best english teacher ever. He is the greatest and is willing to help you with anything. He is tough on essays but he will work with you. His class is entertaining and it doesn't suck to go.
This teacher is very toughwhen he grades essays, but he will allow you to rewrite them. Too opinionated...for my taste. Also he has favorites int he class sorry to say and if your not one of them that will suck for you when you get your grade.
Slightly psycho. Other than that, he's a pretty good teacher. He grades very tough though. His essays are pretty interesting. Overall, a good teacher.
He's an easy teacher, but a little eccentric. I had him two years ago and he still remembers my name. He let's you rewrite all papers so you should easily get an A, unless you have an lot of trouble with English or don't really care.
Hes a really tough grader on papers. He doesn't like test or quizzes though. We watch a few movies. Very strange man and flirts with the girls.
Nice teacher, read your assignments and think for yourself, thats all he wants. Very helpful if you meet him after class.
He is a funny guy. Willing to go above and beyond to help you!!! His class isnt a breeze. You have to work semi hard but you will definitely get a B if not an A!!!
He is a very hard grader. He tells you to "think for yourself," and write what you think, keep it simple, etc. So broad! BUT a good thing is on all his papers he lets you rewrite them. You will learn A LOT in his class, whether you make an A or
Fantastic instructor.VERY hard on grading papers, but gives you a chance to rewrite them.Don't try to give him a bunch of superfluous B.S., b/c he won't buy it!!Go to class, READ your assigments and keep your essays concise.Dr. Elston is very helpful & genuinely cares about YOU as a person.
Opinionated, but funny. No quizzes or any of that crap. 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. He lets you rewrite both papers, and gives you the midterm/final questions a week before the tests. Awesome teacher!
Dr. Jim Elston is an okay guy..he grades papers pretty tough..but the make up paper he went a lot easier on us. My only complaint is on his midterm and final, he'll say to answer questions with your own opinions, but then he'll count off a lot..if its my opinion, how is it wrong?
THis is a great teacher! It was my first college course and he made it a good experience. He speaks his mind and makes class fun. EASY, And GREAT TEACHER!
Great teacher. You will learn so much in his class. His papers aren't hard, but not easy either. I would recommend him to anyone. He lets you rewrite papers, and when u rewrite he grades much easier. I made an A.
When it's warm outside he wears blue socks every day. His midterm and final aren't easy, but he gives you the questions in advance. You can revise your papers at the end of the semester. An A isn't easy to get, but if you come to class you can pull off a decent grade.
He was a very easy teacher. He looks over your essays in advance if you go to his office hours and will tell you how to fix them. It is an easy class if you get him to help you.
Great teacher. Funny. Comes across as opinionated, I don't think that's entirely the case. I think he tries to voice the opinion of the authors and provoke thought in students. Grades his essays harshly but will let you re-write them and gives you midterm and final questions a week in advance.
He's a GREAT teacher! He is very straight forward and will kill you on your first essay, but he doesn't give you a grade for it.He's funny, makes you want to come to class--you definately wont fall asleep. Lets you rewrite everything. Office visits=good grades
He's opinionated, but also, very helpful. When you visit him, he sometimes adds points to previous papers. He lets you do rewrites on your major papers. Out of all the teachers I've ever had, he's the most entertaining.
He is very opinionated & vague, doesn't reply to your emails, never in his office when he says he'll be there, & grades like we're all english majors. he also has ppl he favors more. Probably the only good thing is he gives us a chance to rewrite our papers & exam ?'s in advance.
can have an intelligent conversation about lit., brags about his writers club and editing, hes an amazing editor though, appreicates out-of-the-box thinking
If you to his office to get help, you will do fine on the papers. He gives you the questions to the midterm and final beforehand. He is also very funny and you get to watch movies! TAKE HIM!
He is an amazing teacher. I had him for Comp. I and now Great Books. Go to class and go to his office, and he will help you out. Talk a lot - even if he acts like he doesn't like you - he likes talkers. He's a good teacher. TAKE HIM!
Great sense of humor.Very helpful teacher:will tell you what's wrong with papers & exam ?s,& let's you rewrite.Gives ?s to midterm & exam ahead to allow study time.Never takes attendence, but will notice if you miss. And a HOTTIE!!! ;)
okay teacher i got my hopes up when i saw his rating on this last time, but he wasnt as good of a teacher as i hoped.my one problem with his teaching is how he grades which is pretty tough.people said if you talk to him you'll do fine but he dosent he said my paper was great and i had good points and i made a 65.he's okay but not easy
take this teacher. he is pretty easy to get along with and he is a nice guy. he makes you write papers that are under 3 pages so you don't have to worry about coming up with a lot of b/s.
he's a VERY VERY understanding man and cares A LOT about his students... having a bad day and it shows in a paper you wrote? go talk to him, he'll understand. be friendly, he'll be friendly. cares more about what you learn from him & about life than he does about what you learn (or don't) learn about grammar. wish i could take him for english 1120
He's a great guy and is really understanding. If you are having problems he doesn't mind if you just drop by his office for a chat. His papers are all reasonable and he'll help you with them. He grades harshly on grammer though.
Nice guy, will help you after class. Tough grader though. I would say that getting a B is very managable but getting an A is pretty difficult. If you want a nice guy and a B or a C is cool this is the guy to take. If youre looking for an A acess your options.
great guy. he really loves and cares about his students. if you go to his office hours he will help you! i got an A... he grades hard but if you become friends with him and GO TO CLASS you should get an A. he usually lets class out early... almost everyday except the first two weeks of class!
Great teacher! He's a super nice guy who actually cares about his students! He grades hard, but you get to rewrite your papers. He's more willing to help you after class or during office hours than any other teacher I've ever had. Awesome guy!
This guy is horrible. So unsure about everything. He told me a paper was due 2 weeks before it actually was. I would NOT recommend him. He's too scatterbrained.
Doesn't have guidelines for papers, so they can be semi-hard if you don't give him what he wants. He lets you re-write them though. Really good to meet with during office hours. Lets class out early almost every time.
Don't have him as a professor if at all possbile!
He's nice. He stutters a lot which is kinda fun but frustrating. A bit chauvinistic and arrogant but he's an English professor. His papers are hard just because he doesn't want a "conventional essay"... which can be tricky to figure out. Talk to him after class and you'll do fine. He reallylikes Lord of the Rings.
Really nice guy, but will burry you for poor grammar... but the catch is you can rewrite your two papers :) I did poorly on both papers, but did well on the rewrites. Also gives bonus on the test. Test are all essay and he gives you the questions, I mean what else do you want. If I can get an 'A' anyone should, with a little effort.
Extremely nice and helpful. Go to his office, so that he knows you. He lets you rewrite all your papers. Easy A.
Great teacher. Class wasn't too hard. I only enjoyed 1 of the 6 novels required. Do some work. Listen to him in class and he will give clues to the required papers(2). I would take him again definitely.
hated him with a passion. worst teacher i ever had. would not recommend him, thinks he's the greatest writer ever!
I hated Dr. Elston at first because I thought he only liked his writing. He lets you out early after the first week. really helpful. will teach you really good things
He grades really hard but he lets you rewrite them. He picks favorites and mainly focuses on them. He is very opinionated. Probably the worst English teacher I've ever had.
He tells you exactly what you did wrong and gives you a chance to rewrite. He really encourages you to think about yourself, who you are, and why you are that way. Very encouraging. Taking his class was one of the best choices I, as a writer, have ever made.
I am sure that he is the easiest english professor ever. I hate english and I got an A. He likes papers with a sense of humor or satire. The paper rewrites saved my life! Do well on the journals, and go to his review sessions and listen to his suggestions. He is very helpful. I think I actually became a better writer. Lets you express yourself
He is very good but don't expect an A in the class. He grades on what your paper is worth, so you will not start with an 100.
Almost dropped his class at after the first week...Dont! hes actually a great teacher. Word of advice...make friends with him...he is a helpful teacher either way but he does have favorites. Do consistently well on the weekly writing logs (he lets you drop the lowest 2) and he lets you rewrite all major papers.generally he always lets you out early
Probably my favorite teacher so far. Definitely ask for help for every paper. He will correct it and tell you whether or not it is savable. Rewrites for every major paper. I failed the first three big papers and got a b on the rewrites. Dont wait for the re-dos tho it isnt fun worrying about failing. He loves to tell storys so its never boring.
Didn't like him at first but stick with it. Turns out to be a very good teacher. Make sure you take your papers to get reviewed before you turn them in. His assignments can be on the vague side, so you may need his comments.
Dr. Elston is pretty easy. He gives you the questions to the midterm and final a few days prior so you can get your answers down. Also, re-writes on all papers if you don't do well.
Dr. Elston was a really good teacher. personall i have had really bad experiences with english teachers at auburn and dr. elston has helped to change my opinion. he is really nice and helpful. paper assignments are slightly vague but if you go to office hours he is really helpful. i would take him again in a heartbeat
Very fun teacher and class. Make friends with him! Go to his office hours. Don't use the words so or that in papers, at all!
I didn't like him at first. But I read on this website just to stick with it, so I did. Ended out being on of my favorite classes. I took him my first semester at Auburn and he focuses on writing about your thoughts and feelings, which is pretty cool. He's pretty strict about grammar and mechanics. Came out with an A, with effort.
Dr. Elston was one of my favorite teachers during my first semester at Auburn. I have become friends with him and he helps me with other english assignments. He is very helpful. He is strict on grammar but a great guy! Whoever gets him should stick with him. it will be worth it!
Dr. Elston may seem odd at first, but his class is more than an English class, he makes you think. He wants his students to succeed and he is interested in making his students better writers. In order to succeed in his class, you have to put forth effort and prove to him you are serious. He doesn't tolerate slackers. Dr. Elston is a wise man.
Dr. Elston is the type of teacher that wants you to actually learn how to write better. It is a challenge, and he can be very picky. But I am such a better writer for it. I got an A as a Freshman in Comp II, you just need to give the impression that you're serious about the writing. GO TO HIS OFFICE FOR HELP! Sometimes gives bonus points for class.
What a wonderful teacher! He really challenged me and it paid off! He seems strange at first, but def keep to it. GO TO HIS OFFICE! HE LOVES IT! He's always willing to help or chat about life. Gives you multiple attempts at things and lots of extra credit opportunities. He really changed the pace of my studies at Auburn. Definitely take him!
Had him for World Lit II. Very enjoyable class. Never gave quizzes on readings, so if you forget to read its OK. Exams are open book and he gives you the questions beforehand! Does grade papers tough but no reason anybody should make less than an A or B.
Had him for world lit 2. Cool guy! Does grade papers tough, but gives lots of opportunities to go to him during office hours and does write helpful comments. No tests or quizzes other than midterm and final which are both open note and you get the questions beforehand. You can tell he really enjoys teaching!
Great professor! Very helpful and loves helping his students. Go to his office hours! Writing logs due every week and four major papers are due throughout the semester. Your able to o rewrites on all the major papers. Take him!
Save your GPA and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.. horrible teacher. all he does is ramble and gives you dumb mindterms and finals.. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Dr Elston obviously cares about his students and teaching. I learned more about writing in four months than I thought was possible. He does assign a lot of work though so make sure you keep up with it or you'll be in trouble.
Dr. Elston is my favorite teacher!! He asks students to have meetings with him before each paper to turn, which will help you a lot and get better grades. He cares a lot about students, and encourage his students. I gained so much confidence after taking his class, and I also learned a lot!
GREAT teacher to have for World Lit 2. If you go to him he will help you. He is a wonderful teacher and actually cares about the people in his class. If you work hard and go to class you will do well.
Dr. Elston really cares about his students, and he loves what he teaches. He realizes it's an intro class so he wants to make sure more than anything that you get something out of the material. Go see him in his office for help, and he loves chocolate.
Dr. Elston was one of the best teachers I have had in my college career so far. He is very willing to help you if you go to his office. As long as you have a basic idea of what is going on, he will lead you to success. No homework; open book/take-home midterm and final; two major papers where re-writes were allowed. I highly recommend him.
Go to class everyday. It might be boring, but it will be worth it long term. He notices who comes and rewards you in your grade. Also, make a connection with him. He will always talk about it.
Great professor! At times it can be a little frustrating because he takes grading essays very seriously, but you can rewrite all of them. If you go to class every day and make an effort to get to know him and make a connection, you are golden. He really cares about his students and their wellbeing.
Love-hate! Lectures are weird & boring but, he wants you to listen to what he is teaching & impact your life. Cuts regular attendees slack when grading. He allows rewrites. Went to office hours ALOT & went to Miller Writing, thats what saved my grade. Go to class & show him you care! Never opened textbook, all readings are online.
I wasn't a big fan of Dr. Elston at first because of his tough grading style, but after the second paper I really began to like him. If you go to his office hours, he will majorly help you on your papers. He cares a lot about his job, but he also cares a lot about his students. All papers except the final are maximum 3 pages with semi-easy prompts.
Seems hard in the beginning but if you go to his office hours he'll give you a good grade in the end. Loved this class, highly recommend!
Seems scary at first because he is an incredibly tough grader. But he warms up to you if you go see him in his office. He really cares about his students so if you go see him, he is really helpful. Go to class, and don't really stress about all the reading. I never opened my book and passed. Would recommend him if you put in effort.
AMAZING PROFESOR!!!! Wants to see students involved in book discussions. Not many essays or tests. Does grade hard, but in the best interest of students and encourages rewrites for additional credit. Extra credit available on all assignments. I dreaded English before this class and am looking to take another one of his classes.
Dr. Elston is a very tough grader when it comes to papers. I do not recommend him to anyone.
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! DO NOT TAKE!!
I loved Elston!! He's a super nice guy. Class was cancelled multiple times throughout the semester. He only assigns 4 papers all year, he is a VERY though grader but if you go to his office hours he is super helpful. Every paper can be rewritten. Go to class and office hours and you'll be fine
Such a hard teacher. Want a good grade take anyone else.
Dr. Elston comes across as super tough, but he's actually a softie. I talked with him in his office and got on his good side early on, and he appreciated everything I did after that. The only thing I really didn't like about his class is he tends to have a negative, cynical attitude about EVERYTHING. Lighten up.
Professor Elston has probably been my favorite professor so far at Auburn. He grades tough, but if you go to his office hours before papers are due (there are 4 total) he'll tell you what you need to fix which is definitely helpful. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well.
After the first day of class, I was scared about this prof the most. He is tough and can be quite the hard ass. As class went on he warmed up to my class and quite frankly is the best English teacher I have ever had. Always go to his office hours it will help you the most. Class had four papers and which you can rewrite for a new grade!! Love him!
Difficult teacher, but absolutely my favorite teacher at Auburn. Fantastic guy. No textbook required and no mid-terms/final.
Tough grader, but doesn't bother to teach you how to do it right. Does not stick to syllabus and goes back on his word a lot. Cancels class often but you have to meet him in his office on those days to go over your paper. Goes off on tangents and has a habit of talking down to students. Made me uncomfortable. Would not reccomend.
I am not an English-inclined student and took Dr. Elston for Comp 2. He is a tough grader but will help students fix whatever they mess up on. He allows for one rewrite per paper... if you need to do a rewrite then GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He helps a ton, more so than over email. He is tough but wants you to succeed.
He is very specific about some wording choices not being used, but he will start the class by establishing that fact and being very clear before assigning an essay. He will make you a better writer if you are willing to work with him. Be sure to discuss why you chose wording or something you disagree with (except the word that). Great teacher!
Gives many pointless assignments that he doesn't grade, and then gives almost all students F's on papers. Gives positive feedback on papers, but when turned in he changes his view and wants you to do opposite of what he told you to do at first. DO NOT TAKE!
I was worried I would fail this class all semester. He gives terrible grades on papers, but you rewrite all of them which is time consuming. Only way to get good grades is to meet with him outside of class, but half the time he takes off points for suggestions he made. He gives you busy work in class and grades none of it. Not worth the stress.
We had two papers, a midterm, and a final. Papers are graded for everything, grammar included. you can fail by grammar alone. Handwriting is illegible so you never know what you actually did wrong on the paper. Claims he has office hours but I have been multiple times and he was not there and didnt show up. Worst class ive ever had, DO NOT TAKE
LOVE him! He's very straightforward about what he expects from us and honestly doesn't ask for a lot. He's funny and genuinely loves his job. If you talk to him and make an effort to participate in class you'll have no problem! He also offers rewrites on ALL your papers and bonus so it's easy to do well in his class!
He's an extremely tough grader on his papers. Can't read his writing on papers either and how he comes up with the final grade is unclear. Also does not use Canvas which can be really frustrating when things are unclear or you want to know your grade. When I went to his office to get paper checked he acts like it's a good paper and then fails you.
Tough grader and does little to prepare you for final paper or really any paper for that matter. Unclear how he grades and if he doesn't like your writing style he takes points off. His office hours are helpful but he won't give you consistent feedback on a paper (if you go to him before the paper is due he will tell you it is good but fail you)
Dr. Elston taught me more in one semester than all of my previous English teachers combined. We had three papers total. We were allowed to rewrite each of them for a new grade. His office hours helped me more than anything. He comes off as really intimidating, but hes a really nice guy.
Dr. Elston is a real G. He lets you rewrites your papers if you don't like your first grade. But he does grade really tough. he grades like he's editing for like the New York Times or something. He has a slight stutter, but he's super cool. Make it seem like you give the slightest bit in his class, and you've got an A.
Best teacher I've ever had. Genuinely cares about his students. Would take again for sure. Put in the effort and show that you care, and he'll help you out.
Ok so listen, this dude is SUCH a hard grader but let me tell you I learned more from him in 1 semester than all of my English courses combined. GO TO HIS OFFICE and cry if you have to. He lets you rewrite all of your papers. Had an F as my midterm grade and ended with an A by the grace of tears in his office. YOU GOT IT!!!
One of the nicest men youll ever meet. Genuinely cares about his students. Hell know you by name when you leave his class. You have to work hard but he acknowledges hard work and gives you the credit for it. Learned a lot from him. Go to his office hours, hes easy to talk to and hell clear things up for you so that you can make a good grade.
TAKE HIM! Honestly, in the beginning of the year I was dreading this class because he comes off super intimidating. But he really does care about the students and WANTS you to do well in his class. He is a tough grader, but go to his office hours and he will help you out! He also allows re-writes and other chances to boost your grade!
