Jim is cool.
Jim is a great teacher. He is a great speaker. He gives a lot of examples in class. You will really learn with him.
Jim is makes genetics interesting even if it is not a subject you like. He has a good sense of humor. The tests are fair but you really have to study for them to get an A. There is alot of fact memorizing, but that is just inherent in the subject.
Jim is a really cool teacher. He's so nice and he explains the material well. Take him, he's awesome!
Really good guy, very friendly and helpful, tests are tough though, you really have to study hard to get a good grade
really good teacher. he gives good examples. i actually learned something from him! if u are the 'example' type of person, jim will be the one.
He is an ok teacher. His tests are incredibly difficult and you need to study hard to get a good grade. He is pretty funny but some of his examples make no sense. He knows his stuff very well but doesn't always find the best ways to relate it. His style of teaching may appeal to some but not me.
great teacher. his tests aren't the easiest and neither are the quizes in lab. you pretty much have a quiz everyday, but you will learn a lot from this guy and he will answer every question you have
Jim cares about the subject matter and his students tremendousley! You learn a ton about things you can apply not only to future upper level courses (In MicroBio, CellBio, Genetics and areas of Chem) but, to life! Interesting examples and will answer any question. Two thumbs up!
Jim uncannily confuses a nonconfusing subject. He tries teaching you like your 3 by acting out trite metaphors. His tests are incredibly asonine, he focuses on vacous details that are irrelavant. He constintly tries to mislead you on his tests. I think Jim is making up for subpar intelligence.
Good teacher, tests are really difficult. You REALLY have to study for this class. There are quizes almost every day. Be prepared to study every single day for this class. But you really learn a lot from this teacher, and better prepared for future Bio classes.
He is very good teacher. Yes, he uses metaphors, but this only helps to undersand. It isnt a very easy class, but he gives you learning objectives for every quiz and test, and if you know those youll get 100%. The way he teaches things is awesome, and I have learned SO much!!
Jimbo is the MAN. What a great teacher. This guy *wants* you to get an A. He will curve, give xtra credit, allow late quizes & exams, hand out detailed study guides, everything, to help you along. You better B prepared 2 work, & come 2 lectures. He's hilarious with the metaphors, best class EVER!!!!
Jim is one of the best biology teacher I've ever had. He's outrageously funny and knows his stuff well. He's extremely helpful and very approachable, very nice guy. His exams are tough especially PS/CR and Genetics. Make sure you know your facts inside out, sideways and all ways. Its a demanding course but you'll learn a lot.
Jim is a great teacher - you can tell he loves what he teaches because he's very enthusiastic. He explains things clearly and logically and he is always willing to answer questions if you need help. Any biology class is going to be tough, Jim just makes it
He's good, the metaphors do get tedious and the tests are insane but overall you learn a TON from him about bio, and he relates chem to bio really well for people taking 110 at the same time. You can tell he's trying to give everyone with various bio-related majors a good foundation for later classes. Plus, he's a COOL GUY!
Best teacher I have ever had. Makes everything clear, if always around for help. Hes a very strict grader, but thats what you need for being a bio. major. Highly recommended!
He's a good teacher; very helpful, very clear, pretty lenient with grading. I don't recommend this course if you already have a full load... it's fairly demanding.
Jim is a nice guy but unclear teacher. His tests are very unclear and misleading, he took fairly complex concepts and made them extremely confusing.
I was very interested in this class before going in. After the class, I am considering switching majors. He is really a bad teacher. He is not clear at all. He does not try to make the material interesting and grades extremely hard. Even after asking him how I could improve and following his advice, I did no better than a C. He's not helpful at all
he would be cool, but he's soooo adamant on the evolution thing, "if you want to believe in a supernatural creator then go ahead your free to, but look at the scientific facts"..it kinda bugged me he was so anti-religious, but whatever. just do good on the lab quizzes and you should do good.
He is a very good professor; he is very clear about what you should know for the tests. He answers all questions. The class isn't exactly easy, but what bio 200 class is. He always trys to make it interesting. I would take him again if I could! Attendance isn't mandatory for lecture.
He is very clear in teaching and easy on grading assignments, but he just doesn't give easy test questions. If you are not a good test taker, then you better make sure you get a perfect score on every lab quiz in order to maintain a solid B. He is also generous in grades. If you get an 89% overall, he makes that an A. This is not an easy class.
Jim was funny, an easy grader, and interesting for the first 30 minutes of each class. Bring a laptop, and play games. Print and use the Study Guide, study for the lab quizzes, and turn in the homework; it will help your grade. He doesn't actually grade the homework, so just write something.
Jim is a great teacher but this is a HARD class. You have to study. Lab quizzes are easy but study and get A's, it will help your grade (35%). Do the homework. Tests are hard, the questions were worded very difficult. Jim is always willing to help, he wants his students to do well. He's a great guy.
Jim is VERY difficult, his questions on his tests are worded "interesting" and doesn't give a lot of room for error. You will have to study like mad in this class. I wouldn't take him again if I had the option but he is the only Bio 200 teacher. He spoiled Biology for me and I was a Biology Major
I swear one day this guy's gonna come up with a cure for cancer his passion for biology is so deep =) He makes these crazy sound effects but I LOVE IT!!! he grades really hard but the material is REALLY interesting and relates it all to real everyday life stuff! :D TAKE HIM IF YOURE UP FOR A FUN CHALLENGE!!!
He is very smart, and likes to tell the class a lot of interesting things. Unfortunately, this makes for very long lectures. This is not an easy class. You will spend a lot of time studying for lab quizzes (every day) and tests. I am working very hard right now to maintain a C. The lectures are interesting, even though they are long.
Overall, a good teacher-- Loves biology; clear in lects; very helpful; quickly responds to emails; always very prepared for class. One problem: VERY closed minded and sometimes teaches philosophy as fact. Opposing viewpoints may not be expressed in his class. Sly w/words and clever in lects to address philosophical issues in a science classroom.
He is interesting and funny, and has great examples, comparisons, and sound effects, although he often gets lost on tangents and falls behind. His tests are multiple choice. I had no problem getting an A, although many people had problems. He posts grades on Blackboard. I really enjoyed this class.
This class is nuts! Why in the world should you do an insane amount of work for a 1 unit class!! this class is more work then the 3 unit classes I took. You have to memorize every chapter to do well on every weekly quiz. Teacher has no flexibility and says quizzes are on learning objectives, but they never are. what a waste of time. 1 UNIT!!!!
By no means an easy class, you have to study hard. The great thing is, Jim is super passionate about Bio so he is always willing to help you and answer any questions you have. Keep on top of the daily quizzes, you must be very specific. Guaranteed you will learn a lot, I often refer back to my notes for other classes!
Great Teacher. Is very willing to help and if you keep on top of your work it is an easy class. Tests are not that bad if you get good grades on the quizzes. Really funny guy, you will enjoy this class!!
mr. g is the best, he really is a great teacher. he loves what he does and it shows, he has a great teaching skills and i loved his class. he gives you a study guide for ALL tests and quizzes so there are never any surprises and you always know what to study. i hate guessing what to study. If you want to have a great learning experience take jim!
This class does require you to put effort into it but he does make it easy by giving you learning objectives for all the tests and quizzes. He even puts his lectures online to make it easier to take notes. He is always willing to help you and clearly explains things.
Jim is the kind of teacher you wish you could have for all your subjects. He loves what he teaches and is always willing to help. He's very nice and funny too. Material needed for quizzes is CLEAR. Same for tests but they just cover more and deeper material. He's kinda corny but it's refreshing to have an instructor who's so upbeat.
Jim is one of the best instructors I've had in 2 years at Palomar. He's very passionate about what he teaches and it shows. Be prepared to study hard and take good notes. Between lab and lecture, you spend a lot of time with your lab partners but Jim's entertaining lectures are quite the pleasure to listen to. Not an easy class but an A is possible
This class requires a lot of attention and work. If you take it seriously and want to learn then, you will get an A. Prof. Gilardi is the best professor ever! I think he should travel the country and teach other professors on how to conduct a great class. He is instrumental in my success in class. I got an A 'coz he teaches very well! Real funny2!
I thought he was easy, he gave you a sheet of everything that is on the exams, he is very repetive in some of his lectures which was boring for me, but if you dont get the stuff then its a good thing, he makes sure you understand. FUnny too
I loved his class. He says very few of his students get an A in the class, but I thought it was pretty easy. He does curve the grade to raise the class average to a C. His tests are all Scantrons, but he throws trick questions in, so watch out. He can get off topic sometimes, but I really enjoyed his lectures. Don't miss his osmosis impression!
amazing teacher. always willing to help before a test or quiz. tells jokes during his lecture to keep you interested and laugh. Has weekly quizzes that can easily boost your grade.
AWESOME TEACHER!!! Jim is one of the coolest professors around and he always makes class fun. His analogies are hilarious and he really loves biology. For those who think this class isn't easy or interesting, you shouldn't be a biology major! Jim's class is a breeze for a majors class, especially when compared to 201.
Wonderful teacher. Makes the subject interesting. You definitely have to put in the work, but had the best time in class.
Great teacher, keeps the lecture interesting. Jim is a cool guy and laidback, which makes him approachable and easy to ask questions. You'll def have to put work in for an A or B. He has study guides and learning objectives which makes it clear to what you will be tested on. Don't buy the book new, use the older editions i got mine for 30 bucks.
The lectures would run on for soooo long and the tests were really hard. He really gives you no slack on short answer portions of tests (almost seems like he looks for ways to dock points). Labs were generally interesting. Power points were helpful. You really gotta try hard to get a good grade.
Best professor I have taken. Very well organized, quick to grade everything, and very clear as to what you need to know for exams and quizzes. I enjoyed his lectures too. As long as you're willing to put in the time, you will do fine.
Professor Gilardi knows his subject with no doubt, but one flaw is that he will abandon you if you become lost.
He makes this class so interesting and easy to understand! Love that he relates everyday life to things we're learning. If you study, this class shouldn't be a problem for you! He grades generously/in the student's favor. He's always willing to help students, and is easy to approach, so ask questions if you have them. Great professor!
Good Professor, intersting lecturer. Although if you're not a bio or related major you can still study and get D's on his quizes. No slack given in relations to his short answer portions.
I took his class over summer and although one can find a 6 week course in Biology taunting it ended up being worth it with Gilardi. He made his expectations clear and did all he could to help every student reach his expectations.
This was a really easy class, if you remember what you learned from your high school Bio class then this will be an easy class b/c its all review. I really recommend this professor if you want to get a good grade, he's a really great prof. study guides are very useful, quizzes are easy. just study and attend class and you'll pass.
Jim is an awesome teacher! He is very knowledgeable, he uses good analogies to help his students understand, and he is easily approachable if you have any questions. His class isn't easy, but if you study hard you will earn an A. I highly recommend professor Gilardi, he is like an enzyme that will catalyze the success of your academic future!
Excellent teacher. The class is a lot of work and the tests are pretty hard but he is very helpful and makes sure you understand everything. I wish he could teach every class I take!
Online Bio class can be intimidating and intense. Takes lots of time, understanding, and commitment. only the strong will survive this class. starts off hard, ends easy. you must buy textbook. if you need to crash, good luck!
Bunch of info to cover in bio 200 but luckily gilardi explains it very well. Not much hw but a lot of studying required for lab quizzes (answer thoroughly or youll get marked down). Exam questions can be tricky. Reading not totally necessary if you pay attention and understand everything during the lecture.
Awesome professor! You can tell he enjoys what he teaches! Lab quizzes almost every week, but as long as you do the lab and study up on the learning objectives, you'll be fine. Exams are a bit tough, but he has a list of topics for all his exams that you should be knowledgeable of prior to taking his exams. Sucks that he doesn't teach BIOL 201.
Jim is an awesome teacher and always willing to help his students. I would definitely recommend him, It's a hard class though. Be ready to study a lot. Awesome teacher
exceptional teacher (Im not surprised by all the positive comments on here)- I have always been nervous to take bio since sciences in general were not a strong subject for me in high school (and its been a few years since my last science class!) but I was surprisingly impressed how clear this teacher was. I greatly encourage you to take him!
He was an Awsome PROFESSOR!!!i like how he applied the things we were learning to the real world. I liked how enthusastic he was about Bio. He Def. Knows What hes talking about.Verrrrryyy helpful in clearing up your questions,(That if u ask him!)OVERALL:great professor:D!!!
I took Bio 100 for Summer 2012 with Jim. Even with the course so condensed he managed to make everything clear. He had great analogies than any average joe could relate to. He cares so much about his subject and it shows through his teaching. He is also willing to help anyone, all you have to do was ask. Best professor I've had so far at Palomar!
This class was harder on the surface than it was in actuality. I showed up every day and studied (very minimally) and otherwise did no reading or extra studying, but did to the 3 or 4 easy assignments he gave. Got an easy A. Everything on the tests he goes over at least twice in class. Easy to understand.
Professor Gilardi is one of the greatest professors I've had at Palomar. He makes the class so interesting. The lab was especially fun. I looked forward to it every day. He makes great analogies and jokes. He always made me laugh. He cares for his students and will answer all your questions.
Biology 200 is not an easy class. It is very challenging and Jim makes it very fun and engaging. It is mandatory to take Lab with it, so it makes the class pretty long. There are lab quizzes almost every week, make sure you know the learning objectives and you'll be fine! Exams are pretty hard though.
Took him for summer of 2012 fast track class for Bio 100. Very clear on what he expects. You will learn a lot. Makes class fun. Great analogies. I wish he taught all of my science courses. Simply put, one of the best professors I've ever had.
One of the best teachers I have had. Great lectures with great examples to help you understand. Keep up with the quizzes, they add up. Always willing to answer any questions you have. Very up-to-date on grades as well. Super awesome guy. I HIGHLY recommend taking his class.
Jim is awesome! His lectures are clear and he uses helpful metaphors to explain difficult concepts. 1 project and 1 lab report; don't stress-he's an easy grader. Tests can be tricky but the questions come from his study guides. Lab quiz the next class after each completed lab but again; just follow his helpful study guides. A great professor!!
great professor, knows how to keep class awake, funny and makes everything interesting, but you do have to read from the book and study specially before a quiz because those quizzes will affect your grade.
JIM IS SIMPLY AWESOME. HE IS VERY DEDICATED. HOWEVER, HIS QUESTIONS ARE VERY TRICKY SO ALWAYS TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE CONCEPT. GOD BLESS YOU JIM
i learned some much from this class. i am an engineering major and this only bio class i needed to take and i am so happy i took it with jim. very helpful, you have to pay attention and take notes. make sure you study for lab quizzes 15-20 points each. study guid for every exam, office hours, organized, makes lecture very interesting. take him
Jim was really awesome. He gives you all the tools you need to get an A in his class, you just need to make sure to use them! I am not a biology major and he made me really like the subject. He has a good sense of humor and keeps the class entertaining. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Had him Fall of 2014 and can i just say i would retake this class in a heart beat. He is AMAZING at what he does, he LOVES what he teaches, and he is GOOD at it. I have so much respect for this professor because he will nail you in the head with his notes until you get it. Has quizes but very straight forward. Tests are straight forward just study!
Jim was a terrific professor to take Biology with. Made lecture very interesting, and relate-able to life. Quizzes and tests are straight forward. As long as you have taken good notes, and utilize his study materials you will do well. Labs were interesting and well worth the time to perform.
I am not very good at science but he made the material way more understandable. He is very passionate about biology so he usually tends to talk into our lab time which turns the hour lecture into a five hour lecture. He goes into great detail and explains things in several different ways so that everyone can understand! Definitely recommend !!!
Fun teacher.
Okay, this guy really wants to be helpful but he is not. He gets off topic and over-complicates everything. He's got some really funny ideas about evolution and life in general. He killed my love for bio. You have to parrot his words on tests & quizzes or your wrong.
Wuizzes are hard but he wll giveyou the anwer if youask himfor help. Always did well because i asked him and he will spemd whatever time necessary to help you, just have to ask.
very passionate about subject and uses a lot of helpful analogies to help you understand. only 5 pt extra credit. tests are kinda tough, you have to study really hard and know what you're talking about. no cumulative tests. labs are really cool and you learn a lot of lab techniques. didn't open the book once but he said bio 201 uses it.
The class was not difficult, there's just a lot of material to go through on your own. So if you're not self-motivated, this probably isn't the class for you. There are a lot of videos to watch, which isn't bad, but you have to do it.
His study guides for exams will be over 30 pages long each. Those study guides aren't very helpful for the exams. You must really understand the information to the point where you are a professional and an expert. You must use his definitions for quizzes or it will be marked wrong. You can not summarise the definitions in order to get it correct.
You have to watch video lectures (of a different professor) and take exams (written by a different professor) which you can only pass with COMPLETE understanding of material. all he did was enter the scantrons for grading... what a joke. Passed without ever opening the book, sad. Terrible experience overall. He should not teach this online. Avoid!!
I am by no means a biology fan. I got an 87% in the class, which was the third highest grade. This class required a textbook that you should be prepared to take notes in and highlight. Read the chapters first, then watch the lecture modules, pause to take notes. If you make sure to attempt to grasp the lectures, study before exam, you'll do fine!
Some lecs will be long, but its biology for science majors, what do you expect? There are quizzes every other day so make sure to study (they add up.) Exams are not too bad as long as you attend class, read the book, and review his study guide you'll do fine. 12 page lab report, 4 lec exams, and 1 optional final.
He is a really really nice teacher and will answer any and all questions you have. He doesn't give a lot of homework but there is a quiz after almost every lab and it is NOT an easy peasy quiz. You have to study for it. Also his tests have a written portion as well so just be ready to read and study. I learned a lot in his class but it was hard.
Professor Gilardi is amazing !! He is one of the best professors I ever had ! He takes the time to explain concepts if you ask, provides good PowerPoints so you can study for the test without really opening the book, and will work with you if you have other obligations going on. There are quizzes after every lab, but they are doable. Great class!
Pros: Nice guy, responds quickly to emails. Cons: It's hard to prepare for the exams when the answer keys to the module quizzes (that you're supposed to study with) are RIDDLED with wrong answers.
Loved having Jim for Bio200, he is quite funny and really passionate about science. He makes himself available and answers emails quickly. Tests and labs are only difficult because of the sheer amount of information and detail you are expected to know (expected for a 5 unit science class).
Great teacher. He's really relaxed and his lectures go along really well like he's telling a story. He seems to know everything about everything. He's not easy though, very strict on grading rules and policies.
Best biology professor I've had. His lectures were clear and easy to understand providing many examples. Homework helps prepare for exams. Quizzes are difficult and must study well for them. I really learned a lot from his lectures and would highly recommend for this class.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had. If you want a good grade, study hard and pay attention in his class because his lectures help you to understand the materials instead of just memorizing them. Ask for his help if you are not doing well in the class. He doesn't mind stupid questions. I asked a lot of them, and he kindly answered them all
Jim is the best professor I've ever had he really makes you understand Biology. He's super funny and is so willing to help. He makes you work for your grade and tests you almost every class on previous material which helps with the tests. Wish he taught more classes than BIO 200.
Prof Gilardi is not really the professor for the Online class. It is a series of video lectures that take FOREVER. Tests are very hard because you don't know what Professor Gilardi wants you to know. Make sure to do the practice quizzes he provides before tests. He made many mistakes on tests and practice quizzes so if you aren't sure ASK!
The best professor Ive had by far. His lectures are so informative and humurous. If I could take more classes with him I would. Its a really hard class and you really have to work outside of class for a good grade. He has office hours and is always willing to help. I loved my semester with Jim!
Professor Gilardi is super informative and will give you everything you need to succeed. I recommend doing the Lecture Objectives (all of them). This will help prepare you for every test. Didn't focus on study guides. He is available to help you during office hours and helps explain anything you don't understand! Great teacher all around.
Even I am an international student I find this class easy. Amazing lectures. tests can be a little bit hard. Study for the lab quiz! I didn't have good score on 2 exams but have very high scores on every quiz and got an A. Quiz are the same every year. Find a friend who took this class before for his quiz! Bumps 5-10 points in the end for everyone.
Lectures for the entire period sometimes (5+hours) goes off on weird tangents and occasionally says weird things and gives strange examples. I took AP Bio in high school and this class was easier. I didn't study and got a solid A. Your mileage may vary. Labs aren't collected, just quizzed.
He does a really great job at teaching. He explains things in ways that make even the hardest concepts easy to understand. However, he can drone on sometimes, so be prepared to get bored. He is very helpful and approachable and will help you with any and all questions. He seems to enjoy teaching and it is reflected in how he teaches. Quiz every day
A great lecturer, however, there are days where you will have to sit through 5 hours of him lecturing which can get boring. Study all the learning objectives (for quizzes and tests) if you want to do well! They are heavily (almost completely) based off of those. Very helpful and wants all his students to do well
Rambling on with scattered PowerPoint slides. He only seems to care about meeting his grading quotas to keep up with his tenure.
Took the basic online bio class for non stem majors and he makes you take the exams off campus which is a big turn off and ive taken ap sciences a lot in the past but this class really isnt easy.. considering dropping. the only other work is just like 4 worksheets and 3 online things and the lectures go fast and are really boring
Barely passed this class because on exams, you have to be really specific. The amount of work is just insane.
This class was very manageable in my opinion. He provided a lot of practice exercises (which turned out to be 95% of the exams). It was A LOT of reading, but it is Biology. If you're not a fan of putting in work, you will fail.
Jim was a really good instructor for Bio 200. His explanations were honestly pretty funny a lot of the time and always stuck in my head. The material is quite dense, so there is going to be a lot of reading and studying involved. His tests are also quite in-depth, so you will have to become familiar with all the little details as well. Great class!
