Class is a breeze, but his tests are quite hard. He makes you read a book, too. Since the class is simple, I figured I wouldn't have to study as hard. WRONG! Nice guy, though. Always around to help. No extra credit, though.
Great Teacher! Dr. Harris is very caring about his students, and wants them to succeed. He makes learning biology pretty easy, and I would recomend that anyone needing this class take it from him.
Dr. Harris is very helpful. Class was very informative, but test are more difficult then you would think. I would recommend taking his class.
Great class, easy to cheat it, got an A
If you go to class and pay attention, you shouldn't have problems with his class.
The class was very imformative and he's a great teacher. his tests are pretty hard but the final is the easiest test. He really does want you to pass the class but to take something from it as well
Always helpful and keeps class interesting.
His tests are hard, but no need for book. He lectures during all of class. He is very helpful if you dont understand. Easy to get him talking about a subject for a long time.
He is a really nice guy and the movies help alot if you never go to class and would rather watch them at home, his tests are murder but he doesn't take the grade strate up he does some kind of curve thing that saves your butt.
Best teacher for BIOL! No text book just a lecture book. He also teaches the TV course, so if you miss you can watch the videos in the library. Great reviews for the test and if you understand the information they are not that bad. A lot of really interesting stories and facts. Highly recommend.
He is a great teacher. I'd recomend him to anyone.
He presents the information in an easy manner. His videos, available in the library present the same information. Good to use for review or if you miss a class. His tests are hard. Recommend using a study partner and flash cards. Book not req. but having access to one helpful for review.
Pro. Harris knows a lot about what he teaches. It's way nice not to have a text book, just a lecture outline book. If you go to class and take good notes you will do fine. The tests are more difficult than expected, but he curves grades a lot. Definately a worthwile GE class.
I came into the class with very little interest in the subj but by the time it was over I came out with a genuine love for biology and science. he's a smart and insterting guy and a great teacher. tests are hard but he curves. And if you miss a class you can watch the biology tapes in the library.
I had to retake biology and was not looking forward to this class. He used a lot of visuals in class and wrote his own book so you don't need to buy one. He made things clear and helped me understand biology better. I did much better the second time.
He makes sure you understand and will answer all your questions, this guy has more patience than anyone! gives good test reviews but you definatley need to study, just do it and it's fine
Very good teacher...definitley knows his stuff. This was not an easy class simply because it is a hard class, but he is very good at explaining things.
This guy is the real deal...if any of you have a intrest in botany this is the man to see. His class is concise and he knows his stuff!
What a pleasant guy to learn from. He really knows his stuff but down-plays the difficulty of the tests. This class is hard and you should be willing to put 100% into studying on your own.
Dr. Harris is probably the best bio 1010 theacher at UVSC he knows his stuff well enough that he uses his own lecture book instead of a text. If you GO TO CLASS and put in a minimum of effort into studying you will pass with flying colors. I studied 2 hours for each test and only missed 1 lecture and i came out 6th in a class of 157
He really makes science interesting. If you take good notes in the lecture notebook, you will do fine. I found it was best to watch a whole bunch of the videos in a row and then go take the test. Wait too long and you're toast! The test questions are a little challenging but Harris teaches the class well.
Very good teacher. Made things clear despite the very large class size. Always made time for student questions & was always available for one-on-one help. Very much suggested.
He is always wiling to help a student. He even give you his home phone number. Dr. Harris is the best bio. teacher. He talks very fast, so just ask he to clarify. He always asks if there are any questions. He also checks his email and will send a responce sometimes within a hour. This is a great teacher.
Jim is one of the best professors at UVSC. I loved the class and was able to get an A from the class. I simply went class and took notes and then studied a right before the tests. I highly recommend him.
This was a tough course, but he knows his stuff. His lectures were interesting, and he's more than willing to answer any questions for you before and after class. It's also available in the library as a TV course, so you can catch lectures you missed or just review. The tests are tough, but attend class, review with the videos, and you'll do fine.
Dr. Harris realy knows his stuff, he is helpfull and willing to work with students. If you take notes and study them you will do good on the exams.
You learn a lot in this class. He knows his stuff. However, it is quite impersonal and the class is huge. His tests are really hard, he words them kind of funny. Study Well!
The class was good, use the study guides, they do give a good outline, just dont think that he wont throw stuff on there that is not on the review, I learned that the hard way on the final. Study and review with the videos, and you will do fine. Go to class!!!!
Very clear, concicse; knows what he is doing. Small class size, but graded on a curve so challenging to get an A. Take the class, you'll enjoy it!
My class was HUGE. He didn't know my name. So it made it hard to learn. Tests were hard and he teaches to fast for me. I am going to retake the class with a different teacher.
This is a hard class! The tests are very hard due to the complex wording. If you go to class and watch the videos you should do ok. Make sure you put in a lot of study time!!!
Professor Harris knows his stuff, perhaps too well! He teaches you a lot of stuff that you don't need to know for the tests. When taking his tests it seemed like he forgot to teach about certain things too! He's a realy nice guy and always willing to help though. Very chill class but be prepared to STUDY for the tests! (seriously study!)
Great teacher! Knows his stuff. Very willing to help. Just study hard and take good notes in class and you're bound to do well.
Jim has to be the easiest biology teacher out there. He spends a whole class period anwering any questions you might have on the study guide and he grades tests on the class average. You do need to study though. Plus if you miss a class he has tapes of him teaching you can check out from the library. Plus the book for his class is only $12.00.
I don't know how he got such high ratings. He is the most confusing teacher. I'd spend hours studying every day, and rarely pass any of his tests. He words things confusingly, so half of the information sounds new. He gives you a lot of information that you aren't tested on, so you don't know what to study. I wouldn't reccomend him. Nice guy though
very interesting class. The tests were hard, but Professor Harris is very willing to help. He is knowledgeable and knows the material well. He is a very kind man. I would recommend this class.
This guy can be dry but can be very interesting at times. Loves bio and loves talking, the man does a great thing and thats a CURVE so if you do well or better than average on the tests you will get a good grade. I am not sure if i like him or not but dang the tests are the hardest things in the world.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Harris is very knowledgeable and explains concepts very clearly. You could just stay home and watch the movies and still do well in the class but it helps to go to class. The assignments and everything else are easy but the tests can be very difficult. Study well!
Grade is based on tests, that are jacked! The questions are very tricky!!! He is a chill guy.
This is one of the hardest classes I have EVER taken. HE provides taped sessions that you can rent from the library and they are almost required to get through the class with a descent grade. GTests are very tricky and if you do not study at least 2 hours for each 1 hour of class you will not do well. NO extra credit, tests detemine grade. Nice guy
This class was a TV Course.Class was kinda hard, but if you watched all the DVD's and do the assignments you'll do fine in the class. He curves all his scores so as long as you get average on most of your tests you'll do well in the class.Best teacher you can get for BIO in my opinion.Oh, and if you want you can contact him often and he'll help yo
Harris is an excellent biology teacher. Tests are hard but graded very fair. I would recommend his class.
Great teacher! Very helpful. I liked tha class. I thought the videos were interesting and if you study for the test you will do well. Professor Harris is very nice and smart. I recommend his class.
prof harris is by far the best teacher i've ever taken at uv. he goes out of his way to help students and is incredibly nice. his tests are pretty hard and do require a good amount of studying, but they are doable. he also has really easy assignments to pad your grade. i highly recommend him
This was a fun class. You take a trip up in the mountains every week. You'll need to start memorizing the plant name from day 1. Most of you grade will come from this. I would recommend this class.
Awesome professor...I sat on the back row everytime. As long as you show up or watch the movies and take notes where he says to in his book, you'll do well. His test review page is awesome. Great teacher, good stories and relates things well to make sense. I got an A.
Professor Harris knew the subject very well and he explained it in a way that it was very easy to understand. He's more than happy to answer any questions you have
He knows the material very well and is extremely helpful if you have questions. the tests are hard and take some dedicated study time. little homework and no textbook required although he does have a cheap outline textbook that is great for notes. the review pages in here are awesome. attend class take good notes and study for the tests.great class
He is a great professor. He is really understanding. It is not too hard of a class.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER FOR BIOLOGY!! This is by far the best class ever at UVU, and I have never even remotely enjoyed any sort of science class before! Professor is amazing! His lectures are very easy to follow and they are all on tape in the library in case you miss class. His tests are difficult, and I would recommend a weekly study group. :)
I loved Professor Harris. He gives you a study guide and reviews everything that you need to know for the test. It is a class that you need to study for but he has a way of making it interesting.
I did NOT like this class. I did the TV course which was fine, but he kept leaving material out that was on the test. I don't like science to begin with, which may have something to do with it. His tests are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. Some of the lessons were interesting and he does know the material very well. It's for non-science majors.
He is a WONDERFUL teacher!! The book you use for the class is a book of notes that have the sections titled and you fill in the notes underneath. He is very helpful, uses stories to help apply the concepts, and tells you exactly what you need to study for each test, and the final. I HIGHLY recommend him.
TAKE FROM JIM HARRIS. He is the easiest bio 1010 teacher at uvu, but still teaches the content very well. very fair about content of tests, funny, laid back, only 4 assignments, 4 tests. Still a difficult class, definitely should go to the study group with the tutor provided by uvu.
There should be a separate rating for his TV course. All of the comments for taking his class physically seem to rate him highly, but my experience (and my classmates') with his TV course was overwhelmingly poor. He meanders, covers material not on test (and tests material he didn't cover). Unnecessarily a chore. It's a waste of the video medium.
Super challenging class but he gives great lectures. Take lots of clear notes and watch his podcasts. Study hard, finish your assignments and you'll do good.
One of the best teachers I've had at UVU <3 He is very forgiving on late assignments!
It's such a large class that I know it's hard to get to know every single student, so I still felt unattached to him. Also, the tests were really hard. I didn't do good on any of the tests, but studied super hard for each of them. I kinda felt let down. Also, I feel like the class moved so quickly. It went really fast.
Information is technical--cuz it's a "BIO" class. Your ability to ask questions can help ease the technical portion. Attendance isn't mandatory but super beneficial. Class is graded on a steep curve. Look at it as built in extra credit!
I took the online class, and I actually thought he did an amazing job! He was very helpful & easy to pay attention to. All you have to do is watch videos (very time consuming but ok for online) and take notes, and you should be fine. I am usually horrible at science and walked away with an A-
I did this class online. The episodes were interesting and the required assignments were a piece of cake! Professor Harris seemed like a nice guy. The only negative aspect were the tests! I studied hard for all of them and didn't do nearly as well as I thought. The questions are worded to try and trick you and on things never covered.
Good teacher. He gives multiple examples, and answers all questions clearly during class. He is willing to help outside of class. His tests are very difficult though. Expect to study at least 10 hours for each of the four exams. His test average was 65%. There isn't a textbook to read from, so take good notes. Online videos also helpful too.
Great teacher. Always willing to spend extra time answering questions or resolving issues. Willing to meet with students outside of class abundantly. Makes dry jokes- I thought they were funny. One issue I can see someone having is class size. Typically, this class is large, mine was ~150 students. But otherwise, I recommend him to anyone.
Very difficult if taking online. I watched every episode and studied thoroughly and still had trouble with the tests. The tests are worded horribly and are very tricky. Do not take this class online. Great videos, just did not cover what was tested. The content that was taught was very vague and generalized but the tests were very specific.
Very good teacher. Lectures for the whole hour and answers any question you have. You use a lecture guide in place of the text book. I would recommend getting te lecture guide. His tests are extremely hard. Don't take this class your first semester of college like I did. Get used to the studying needed before you take this class.
Professor Harris was a thorough teacher. He doesn't use a text book, instead there is a $10 outline he wrote himself, that is as big as a book. Get it! I loved the outline! There's no readings as he just goes over everything on the outline and you can follow along. His tests are difficultly worded, but you'll get a fair grade for what you study.
challenging class. if you go to class and pay attention and STUDY for the tests you'll do okay. You can find the lectures online which are almost identical to what he says in class, great if you feel lost or if you missed a day. the tests are worded weird, in the sense that if you dont have a very firm understanding of the material you wont get it
Only take this class if you're a good test taker. Eighty percent of the grade is tests. The other 20 percent is homework. The tests are extremely hard and there isn't any curving. And yes, he does word them tricky. The questions on the exams are not what you've learned in class but how to apply them. Very hard. Take from another professor.
He's a great teacher, always willing to help you. It's really not a tough class. I almost never went to class and just watched the online lectures and did well on the tests. The tests really aren't that hard and he warns you about tricky questions. The only thing is the grade is curved so you have to well relative to other students to get an A.
Professor Harris must have switched his teaching methods. These reviews are not accurate. I am ranked 60 out of 150 students in the class and have 62 percent grade which means at least half of my glass is getting a D grade. Professor Harris doesn't grade on a curve so don't expect any leniency on his confusing tests.
Jim is a good teacher. He doesn't believe in textbooks, so he wrote his own that you use during the semester. It costs around $12 from the campus bookstore. His tests are a little tougher, but HE DOES GRADE ON A CURVE! I finished the class with a 69% and received a B+. If you pass the tests, you pass the class. It's that simple.
Dr Harris is quite knowledgeable about biology. Since it is an entry level course, you will do quite a bit of memorizing. It's best to know overall concepts and not just random facts for the tests. Because of the no textbook factor, attendance is TOTALLY necessary to passing the class. Take good notes. You just have to get 80% on tests to get an A.
Lecture-style class. Dry, serious lectures that never really felt boring. Non-mandatory attendance, but don't count on anything higher than a C on your tests if you skip a bunch. Overall, a cool older dude teaching a great intro to Biology class. (PS: No textbook required. He sells a notebook for the class w outlines for $12 @ the bookstore)
Don't take from him! Take from professor Ogden. I'm not sure why people says he grades on a curve but he definitely did not curve in my class. Over half of the class received C-'s. His lectures are extremely long and dry and his tests are worded tricky and don't apply to his lectures.
Lectures are long and boring if you ask me. You have to attend class to get the notes because there is no textbook. His tests are hard. They are worded hard.
Mr. Harris really comes in clutch. He suggests a workbook that costs 10 dollars in the bookstore and doesn't require any other textbook, you listen to his lecture and fill in the workbook with pictures and useful diagrams and that's all you need to know for the tests and everything. Gives 6 assignments for the whole semester, and honestly is great
You can skip class and still pass because there's podcasts in iTunes. I didn't particularly enjoy this class. All it is is lecture with online quizes and tests. There's no book, no homework, fast paced, so you have to teach yourself. It got frustrating to feel prepared for a test then be surprised with the types of complex questions and get a C.
He's a nice guy, but he talks the whole time never shows a clear examples of what he's talking about. You have to write down almost everything he says. The assignments are simple and kind of easy, he has his lectures on Podcast in case you miss something (I never used them). Be sure to know a little about biology before you take him.
Professor Harris is a wonderful teacher who wants his students to succeed. His class is hard but college is supposed to be hard!! Go to class, take notes, and study the review sheets and you can easily do well on tests. The tests are hard but he curves them. You will get an A in this class if you take it seriously. I now love biology!!
Attendance is not mandatory which was nice. If you miss all you have to do is get notes from another student. The only downside to his class are his tests. They are extremely hard! Tests are a majority of your grade because he doesn't assign much homework or take attendance. I did not pass a single test in his class and yes I studied for every test
Harris is a great lecturer and has been doing it for so long he knows what to expect. The exams are difficult but the everything on the tests in somewhere in your notes or on the study guide. If you study more than 4 hours for exam exam you'll get at least an 80, and the curve is about 5-10%. I really enjoyed this class. No textbook
Instead of a textbook has his own notebook you buy from the library that was only like $12, and it is exactly what he fills out in class. It did make it slightly difficult to study if you missed one of the points or if you wanted to read ahead. I am horrible at biology and I got a B+, so it was an easy class.
Professor Harris knows just about everything that has to do with biology but slightly expects you to as well. His tests are hard and are more specific than anything he would have explained in class. If you want an A you need to do extra work, and I am not talking about just studying for the test.
He made a book that you can buy that follows his lecture notes exactly and you can fill in your notes in the space provided and it only costs $10 I would highly recommend getting this book he'll tell you more about it in class. you only have 2 enrichment assignments and a small quiz online before each test that helps you out a lot.
His 4 tests are extremely hard and worded very tricky. There are almost like trick questions. I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend this class to anybody at all. He says he curves the class, but he only curved my class 1%. So don't bank on the curve cause it probably won't be a favorable one. Do yourself a favor and take bio1010 from a different prof
Dr. Harris is an awesome teacher and I am glad I took his Bio 1010 course. His tests are hard, he expects you to learn the material but there are study sessions with a TA to help. All of his lectures are available online, so if you miss a class you can still get the same material. He is funny, kind, and obviously loves the subject he teachers.
Jim was super friendly and helpful, but his tests are SO HARD. The average is always around 60%, but he doesn't change anything. Study hard, because there aren't a lot of assignments. No textbook, just buy his workbook, it follows his lectures perfectly. It was an okay class, but I am sure there is better.
I thought he was a great professor. He uses a workbook (not really a textbook) that is basically a blank copy of his lecture notes for you to fill out in class. He even fills it out with you, so it's easy to make sure you have all the important information. I thought the class was an easy A, but I am a health science major :) Graded by few things.
Professor Harris is one of the most organized teachers Ive had. His lectures follow the workbook perfectly which makes it easier to study. I definitely recommend joining or creating a study group right before the exams.
Awesome professor, he gives you all the information you need and he goes through the notes in the workbook he wrote for the class. The lectures were very straight to the point and he didn't try to give you any information that you wouldn't need. Not tons of assignments, and all of his lectures are recorded and posted online in case you miss class
I loved this class so much! lectures weren't mandatory at all but I would highly recommend going to them, they helped so much! if you can't make it he has easily accessible videos of his lectures in canvas. There's usually an SI for this class, I would highly recommend going to those. The notebook he provides is super helpful and cheap(like $10)
He is the worst professor I have ever had in my life and I am not exaggerating. No textbook, goes on useless rants. Has been using the same method of teaching for over 20 years. I learned more from his TA who he doesn't communicate with. Offers no help. Google explains things better than he does. Terrible professor! Good Riddance!!
Professor Harris made things clear, he had a workbook that he used to help us take notes. This is his last semester teaching so I doubt anybody will read this but for the record he wasn't too bad.
