He is a brilliant, brilliant man...who is always questioning your ideas, beliefs etc. He is a forceful and energetic lecturer who makes all his classes fun. There was a **** load of reading though.
great professor! knowledgable, really really smart and helpful. also very funny - definitely made the class enjoyable. speaks a little too fast :)
Awesome... interesting, intelligent and funny. Practically flawless
he is amazingly helpful and extremely intelligent!
He's a brilliant lecturer BUT gives the hardest exams!!! and *evil trick* questions :( :(

Great Lecturer. Will never fall asleep in his class. Loves to throw out curves in his exams so be prepared to work your butt off.
Great professor, great class. VERY helpful. LOTS of reading.
Hartley talks wicked fast, but he's an AWESOME prof!!! Take a class with him if you can! He expects you to actually do the work and stuff, but it's worth it!
One of best prof's I had at MHC. Memorable lectures (once you get past the pacing and fast talk). Always available outside of class for q's or just a chat. Exams are all essay questions and tough, but they really make you think and help you learn.
Excellent Professor + Advisor
Professor Hartley Rocks! He keeps us thinking and we have a lot of fun in class! Highly recommended! be prepared for a lot of work
he is very hard, but very good
Hartley is the best! He is so smart and interesting.
Hartley ROCKS!!! It is a LOT of reading, but is totally worth it. No other class has made me think more. He is completely accessible and always available even to just chat. Take a class from him if you can!
Hartley is the most arrogant that I have ever met.
I'm on my fourth year here at MHC and he's still the best professor I've encountered here. I don't like math and was intimidated by the subject, but he made it 100% manageable. He's always willing to re-explain things, and attempts all sorts of entertaining twists to help you understand better.
Great class and great professor. He gets you thinking all the time and totally pushes you to learn. He's definetly one of the best professors at MHC. And you can always stop by his office just to chat.
Ok, I knwo a lot of other PPL feel as I do but are keeping quiet for some reason...this class could be great but because of the way Hartley conducts it, I do not enjoy it at all. Sure, the discussions can be funny for a minute or two, but they are always the same and never lead to anywahere. He goes
fun prof!
I love this class and this man. Discussions are not only entertaining but also leave you questioning what you thought you knew. If you're open to it, he'll force you to really think and it's awesome. Almost ridiculously accessible and helpful. Charming nervous laugh; keeps chickens. Take the class.
I cannot fathom how this man has elicited such a great response because his class is not well ordered, he is not a professor of the fields which we are discussing and his an arrogant, ****, offensive man. He has said some horrible things to people he does not apologize for. do not take this class.
You will enjoy this class if you like to call Mahatma Gandhi an antisemite, if you are of the disposition that West. Civ. has done everything for the world in the intellectual sense. He teaches this class to forward his own ideals, not to foster discussion. He is creepy, his laugh is not charming.
I heart Hartley!! He's such a great prof and an awesome person! Though he is a little arrogant, he certainly makes you think and always comes to class very prepared, he even does our homework assignments! Seriously though, ignore those nasty, spiteful comments about Hartley!
Excellent professor, very helpful. Take an independent study with him.
A hyper, loud, and infinitely aggrevating person. Clearly, don't take a class with him if any of those these things bother you. If you can get over them, you absolutely should, because he'll make you rethink the reasons you believe what you do: fantastic.
arrogant, obnoxious, not as smart as he thinks he is. not even close.
absolutely awful. DO NOT TAKE WESTERN CIV FROM HIM for if you do, whenever you see his creepy face around campus, not only will you cringe in disgust but actually throw up a little in your mouth. Don't say I didn't warn you.
I took both semesters of Western Civ with Hartley, and not only have I never thrown up in my mouth while looking at him, I also think he is the best professor at Mount Holyoke. So don't be scared. He's so friendly, and you'll learn a ton.
He made me fall in love with economics.
I feel so fortunate to have had Hartley first semester, first year. He has been a critical asset to my MHC career- always available for consultation on academics and everything else. He is very knowledgeable concerning professor and course quality. You do not need to be an econ enthusiast to appreciate this man.
Very entertaining. Gives easy exams and repeats questions from midterms for the final. His conservatism and political incorrectness are almost refreshing on such a militantly liberal campus. Talks too much about his chickens, though.
I took Macro Theory & Money & Banking w/ Jim. I loved his classes b/c they were never boring. yes he talks really fast & paces around the class room but he will talk about anything econ related or not & he's great at explaining & simplifying things.
prof hartley is an amazing professor. my favorite one at mhc so far. he really makes the material come alive, even it's something as econ. there is never a dull moment in his class, especially with his twisted sense of humor. only in his class can you find out what happens if you die too early or too late. hahaha.
Prof. Hartley is amazing. He loves teaching and is very good at it. I loved his Macro theory class and although the exams were hard, I actually enjoyed taking them. Weird huh!? I am definitely going to take Money and Banking with him next semester too!
The greatest professor ever! He is so passionate about teaching and so aware of what's happening around students, that you can always get a useful advice career and course wise. This was the only class in which I never felt bored.
Hartley is a very engaging professor. class is very interesting. The problem is he only covers the basics of the material. The exams are based on the book and the questions are much more complicated than anything he covers in class. The exams are extremely difficult/almost impossible, but luckily he curves.
Funny, Intelligent, Engaging, Challenging.... Better class than I would have ever imagined!!
Hartley is completely fantastic in the classroom, but the best part of all is how accessible he is out of class. He always has time for you, he gives great advice, and he's also just really funny. By far my favorite professor at MHC.
A chili for hartley.
Jim Hartley deserves a Chili pepper
chili peppper material ;) awesome class, really helpful in class and forever after. knows all about classes and profs!
Awesome guy, very helpful, fun class.
Definitely deserves a chili pepper!
We need a facebook club to get Prof. Hartley a chili pepper. He certainly deserves it because he is a rockin' professor.
I took the Great Books & Economics and it was one of the best classes I ever took. He was quite original in his presentation of the material and made me interested in a subject I never would have otherwise considered. definitely a great professor.
Great Professor! Definitely take his class! You'll actually enjoy it more than you enjoy economics....
I heart hartley! An excellent professor- very clear and has a lot of knowledge on the macroeconomy. The readings for Money & Banking are a bit hard but since he doesn't expect u to read it all, it reduces the pressure on us and makes us enjoy class. He is much better than Robinson so pls make him Chair of the Dept!!
He has an enormous ego that gets in the way of his teaching. He seems very narrow minded.
Hartley ran an amazing class full of intelligent and groundbreaking discussions! He always used humor to make our class think in new ways. Great professor!
Professor Hartley has a very unique way of arranging his curriculum, relying heavily on non-fiction books. His tests are a bit tricky, but they are open-book. Do the readings, come to class, and take full advantage of his incredible receptiveness to questions. Prof Hartley is my favorite at MHC.
Jim Hartley is a very poor professor. He uses his class less to teach economics then to preach an ideology. He has no ability as a teacher and tries to intimidate students. He brags about how hard he will grade and goes out of his way to be unhelpful even if you try to use his office hours. Avoid this professor!
Fantastic. Challenging, clear. Really, everything you could ask for.
Hartley was the worst professor I've ever had. His explanations are overly simplistic and lack nuance, as well as being exceptionally biased in favor of his political ideology. His lectures were carbon copies of the reading, so class was pointless/boring. His lectures are occasionally humorous, but that was his only redeeming quality. Avoid.
Political ideology aside, Hartley is a great professor. He's patient, accessible, knowledgeable and he makes students think. The comment about him trying to intimidate students is ridiculous. You can't find a prof more interested in students' learning.
I completely agree with the comment below. He is one of the few conservative professors at MHC, but he refuses to talk about his politics in class. Hartley is a very lively lecturer and comes up with great examples to explain the concepts. He truly loves economics!
Avoid him! I didn't get a word of what he said in his lectures because he talked so fast. To make matters worse, he was very unclear about what he was saying. He knows his stuff but he's not good at teaching. He'll confuse you more than clarifying matters. I don't like his grading system.
Make sure you use textbook intensively, it really helps for tests. Also all the supplementary reading he assigned, if your lazy make sure youve read half of each. He's very unclear about grading policy, mainly so that you concentrate on nonstop improvement. Even the author of textbook is a conservative, no surprise so he is
Best professor I've had. He LOVES what he does and he loves getting to know his students not just in class but outside of classroom too. NEVER miss his lectures they are awesome. Make sure you read and do the problems in the textbook. You have to be highly self-motivated in his class. He doesn't give weekly hw assignments.
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. He is soooo helpful, accessible and patient. I love him. He makes you 'think' how the economy functions. You will learn so much from him.For econ majors: You'll regret graduating from MHC with econ major without taking a class with Hartley. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!! ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT. I LOVE HIM HE'S THE BEST PROFESSOR!
He is so hot. I love him. He is patient and accessible. Funniest class I have ever taken.
Prof. Hartley does not know how to structure a curriculum. There was no incentive to do the readings in this class, and he was very VAGUE about what he wanted from students in the papers. He's also very patriarchal and condescending in class. He is very helpful and is a great person to talk to OUTSIDE of class, but useless as a professor.
definitely gets a chili pepper
He is an amazing professor. My favorite professor and class at MHC ever!
Hartley, I never got to say good-bye at graduation! I only took one class with him, which was interesting and incredibly in depth. Such a great guy. And definitely deserves a chili pepper!
Great class. One of the best classes I took this semester. He's a great lecturer, and I was never bored at his class. Definitely take a class with Hartley before graduating. He's also great to go talk to during office hours; he gives insightful advice! He's also a fair grader and really appreciates your improvement and effort you demonstrate.
really unclear of what he's teaching. gets annoying after 3 weeks sitting in class talking about stuff that are not important for the sake of humanity.
Hands down the greatest professor I've ever had. He genuinely respects and helps students. Please do not graduate from MHC without ever taking a class with him. At least go talk to him.
I took Hartley's intro econ class last semester and although I found the content challenging, I liked the class. Hartley's enthusiasm for both the subject matter and teaching made me always want to come to class, even though the tests were based on the textbook. He was so open to questions and discussion, and going to his office hours helped a ton.
He's fair. Always there to help. Amazing lecturer. Best prof ever. I would take EVERY class he teaches. Love him.
just avoid him.
Intro to Econ class was incredibly frustrating because he assigned readings from a really dense textbook, to which he offered absolutely no guidance of what to expect on the exams, therefore the only way to pass the exams was to practically memorize the whole book. Also not good about responding to emails, nor answering questions clearly in class.
MOST INCREDIBLE HUMAN. Do you question the state of society, your purpose, or the meaning of life? Read all the books. Ask all the questions. Play the devil's advocate. Read, keep asking questions, he is always available outside of class for existential ponderings. He values intellect that is formed outside of textbooks.
The professor's grading system is hugely unfair. There are only three times of test that matters which means each test takes 30%-40% of the final grade. There is no participation grade nor extra credit. He is not a reasonable teacher compares to others. However, he does talks about things related to eco in class.
I took Econ101 with Professor Hartley during my first semester at MHC and it was a challenging class. Your grade is determined by 2 midterms and 1 final exam. He is a really wonderful human being and person to talk to outside of class and will go over problems during office hours, but there is a ton of textbook readings and 3 supplemental books.
Do NOT take him for introductory economics, unless you are willing to spend all your time studying for his class. His teaching method is completely incompatible with the exams, which are the only grades you receive in the course. AND his interactions with students in class were rude and condescending.
Professor Hartley is an incredible person and an even better professor. His exams are hard, but not unfair, and he curves. The only people who struggle are those who don't read the extra readings (he assigns other non-fiction books as well as textbook readings) and those who don't ask questions/go to office hours. One of my favorite profs at MHC!
Hartley was an amazing professor to have for my senior year. While he assigned lot of reading and a large amount of homework each week, the work was very relevant and he really cared about how we engaged with the material. The longer book readings the week before a term paper, was usually the assigned reading for the longer papers. Highly recommend
I learned most of the materials by myself, and he did not prepare well, especially the instructions after class. He acts like he is very humorous, but his loud voice makes me deaf. Even though his lecture was clear, I gradually got confused because it was kind of repetitive. I mean he made a simple question complicated and sometimes useless.
I had him for my first-year seminar and knew I had to take another class with him. Please take one of his "Great Books" courses before graduating! The discussions are fascinating and he's hilarious. He has made me have multiple existential crises. Be warned: He made us read a book a week for my CS Lewis FYSEM and this class, but it was worth it!
I'll start by saying that I'm typically a great student. I had to go ungraded because I couldn't reach this prof's insane standards. He straight-up told us that a good essay would receive no higher than a 70, but refused to provide clear guidelines for how to achieve a higher grade. He also takes meetings barefoot, which I found unprofessional.
I love Jim. His class is ok, but definitely go to his office hours and become his friend - he's the greatest ally you'll make on campus! The grading system can be confusing at first, but it's not that bad. 70 on an essay doesn't mean 70%, it means 70 on the Hartley Scale of Arbitrary Evaluative Numbers. You will be fine.
Projects onto students and is unwilling to discuss other perspectives in a course which should be based on such.
