Very nice guy - friendly and fun. He is very willing to work with you so that you understand the material.
superb. wonderful teacher, very helpful. wants students to succeed. put in a decent effort and you certainly will.
Jim rocks da house
Makes math easier to understand.
JIMMY HENDRIX IS THE BEST MATH TEACHER AT IU!!!!!!!! If you have him you should consider yourself lucky. He is hilarious and has a way of making calculus fun ( which is NOT an easy task ). He cares a lot about his students and will know everyones name 2 weeks into the class cause ... he's just awesome like that. GET JIM AS A TEACHER!!!
Best math teacher I have ever had.
Best teacher ever
Really good teacher, and completely cares about how well his students do.
Nice guy, it appears he wants his students to do well. However, his quizzes and tests are ridiculous.
Jim is cool as a regular guy but as a teacher i find him very annoying in class sidtracts off with stupid jokes no one cares about and doesnt actually test your ability he jsut tests how fast you can divide and multiply weird numbers FAIL
Jim is a really good guy. Very funny, but odd. His tests are very difficult and he never gives enough time. Quizzes differ from hard to easy depends on the mood he is in. He also will memorize your name, which at times can be creapy. GO TO HIS OFICE HOURS. He changes scores on tests and quizzes all the time if you go to office hours.
He was not the best teacher but I think the subject matter is just hard to teach in general. So because of this I think he is definitely one of the best teachers you can have at IU. He truly wants his students to do well in his class. Homework he allows you to get over 100percent in. He is a little bit strange but incredibly nice!
hes boring
Lectures were boring but it's calc, what do you expect? I had to retake calc and this time he made everything much clearer and explained everything very well. Go to office hours to get 100% on homework and right before exams because he'll tell you what's on it. Calc sucked but Jim was a great professor.
Probably one of the best math teachers to roam the world
Awesome teacher great at explaining. Go to office hours!
Awesome math teacher
This guy is the man. I've never enjoyed math, but I've always understood it. Now, I understand it AND I'm even considering a minor in Mathematics. Jimmy Hendrix-on is awesome.
The best teacher at IU?
Jim is the best. He is funny, very intelligent, and extremely clear. He will go beyond what is expected just to help his students. I hate math and I actually enjoyed his class. RECOMMENDED.
Hendrickson is fun, makes the class interesting even though I hate math. He makes a lot of baseball references and basically wears a Brewers jersey everyday.
Jim is a great teacher. He knows nearly everyone's name out of a class of 200, and wants every student to succeed. I don't think I will ever have a professor better than him.
Jim is extremely helpful. He does his best to learn as many student's names as possible (he surprised me when he knew my name when I turned in the first quiz). His lectures are extremely relevant, and made the homework, quizzes, and tests easier.
Jim is by far my favorite teacher at IU. He really wants to see everyone succeed and has a lot of office hours available. He's funny and knows most of the student's names by the 3rd week in a lecture class of 200!
Jim is the most helpful professor that I have encountered. He has a great sense of humor and is always willing to go above and beyond to help you understand.
Truly cares and wants to help each student perform the best they can. Great teacher and great guy.
Jim is by far the best math teacher that I have ever had and really cares about all students. I recommend going to his office hours and getting help from him in the evenings at the ASCs.
The subject - M119 - was hard but he is definitely one of the better math teachers I have ever had. He understands many students hate/struggle with math and tries to make it more bearable through his lectures. He also cares about students' performance and offers great help. His quizzes were definitely harder than the tests though...
Had Jim for the fall semester in Finite and then had him in the spring for Calculus. He gives plenty of opportunities for help, and make sure that he gets to know you because that will help out. He is a must have for both m119 and m118.
He teaches material that is not required for the midterm and final. His teaching methods are not good at all, he does not teach exactly how to do problems. The worst experience I have ever had with a professor.
Really good teacher, good notes, lots of office hours and review sessions. Quality :-)
He is a good teacher. He really seems to want you to succeed. It is a hard class, but he does whatever he can to help. He is one of the few teachers that will hold free review sessions before exams. He is also good at keeping your attention during his lectures, because he is a funny guy.
He is a great teacher. Will always offer help if you need it. Highly recommended for finite. He is a pretty funny man, although some of the lectures can get long.
class can be somewhat challenging at time but if you do the online homework and take the time to review/study before tests you will do good in this class
To say he is unique is an understatement. Tests and quizzes can be hard. Helpful in office hours.
Awesome teacher. Math is a pretty rough subject to say the least, but Mr Hendrickson made class bearable and you will get a lot out of it. He's a pretty funny dude too and wants students to do well. Highly recommend.
Wouldn't recommend for calc. He tries to be too funny during lectures and it interferes with the learning because the material isn't taught in detail.
Defintely wouldn't recommend. Spends to much time trying to be funny instead of teaching the materal. Teaches as if we all took calculus in high school. Disinterested and unhelpful during office hours. Writes much harder tests and quizzes than the department. Overall, pretty immature and unpleasant.
I've had some horrible teachers, but this dude might just take the cake. Doesn't explain things well, or at all. Focuses on jokes he probably planned ahead of time. Didn't even inform about webwork hwk in FIRST week of classes, so I got 3 zeroes of the bat. Goes over examples and say now how about that on the test, and test is extremely difficult..
Had Jim for both M118 and M119. He's Very helpful, especially if you go to see him at office hours or Briscoe. Tests are similar to practice exams, but not exactly the same. He does teach chapters in a different order, but it made sense to me. Quizzes are hard but they're worth only a little part of the grade.
First of all he makes his class more difficult than that of the department. His test and quizzes are much harder. I like math however and liked the challenge. I got an A- but I think I knew the material well enough for an A+ in any other section but his. He really is a nice guy and great in office hours. Sometimes was not the best at explaining.
Hendrickson is a really great teacher! He gives extra credit for doing the exam reviews, going to class, and is super helpful during office hours. (If you need help, GO TO OFFICE HOURS) He really tries to help you understand the material. The class isn't difficult for me, but he makes it understandable for everyone.
He's a really nice guy and very jovial. However, his constant attempt to be funny interferes with the clarity of the curriculum. He's very good at math, but assumes that you know everything while failing to go into enough detail to make sure everyone understands. False sense of easiness while his quizes wreck you. Do not recommend.
Hendrickson made a relatively dull subject in Finite interesting with his enthusiasm and humor during lectures. He thoroughly explains topics in class while keeping them lively. He does give quizzes, but they are easy if you study and they help prepare you for exams and the departmental midterm.
I would highly recommend taking this course with someone else. Although Hendrickson was energetic and could be funny, he could also be rude and extremely confusing. His tests were not representative of classwork, homework, or practice tests.
Prof. Hendrickson made light of the dull subject of finite through humor and enthusiasm, but sometimes the clarity of the lessons suffered for it. The quizzes were unreasonably difficult. He holds his class to a higher standard so the midterm and final material are easier than his personally written tests.
The most helpful professor I have ever had, go to his office hours. He truly does care about his students. His class may come off as challenging but it will be rewarding when the midterm and final come around.Quizzes may seem difficult but they count as a small fraction of your overall grade and they really test your knowledge of the subject. STUDY!
Very frustrating professor. Tries to be funny in class and moves at an extremely fast pace. Class notes he provides don't always help with Webwork. I'm usually very good at math, but I am struggling with his class.
Good teacher, clear explanations. Did a lot of stuff for us. Review sessions before every exam, put all his slides online, had lots of office hours. His exams (so far) were nicer than the midterm.
Great teacher! Explains things well and tests are what you would expect. Definitely recommend.
Makes multiple choice quines and exams with like 8 options. Very Clear in class but Exams are so much harder then the examples he does in class. Good Guy . Recommended!
I'm not much of a math student but I actually enjoyed going to Prof. Hendrickson's finite classes. He's extremely helpful (lots of office hours and review sessions in his off time) and clear in his lectures. His exams and quizzes can be challenging. He has a kind of silly sense of humor that keeps class actually very funny and entertaining.
The course M118, or Finite Math is difficult all on its own. The course requires hours of Webwork homework assignments that called for hours of tutoring outside of lecture. Jim is good at explaining methods and comparing math to understandable, played-down stuff. Pretty chill, funny guy. He helps ALOT at tutoring sessions, which I deeply suggest.
He does a good job, I think the class itself is just tough
Always trying on unrelated, no-funny-at-all jokes. Not teaching clearly and not in detail. Give ppt with more than 100 slides every lectures which can make students more confusing. Students should not play with their phone, that's true, but if you do it in his class, expect to be embarrassed by e.g. phone being confiscated, solve Q on blackboard.
James Hendrickson is a really good teacher. The class was fast-paced, so I didn't think I could miss a day. Does NOT like students to memorize problems, so don't even try.
Excellent, 5 stars! I had him for 118 and 119, B+ and A. There are quizzes every Wednesday; they're sort of tough, but they don't count for much. Clickers every day, so attendance was kind of mandatory. Liked the slides. See him at Briscoe; it really helps!
It doesn't seem bad during classes, and honestly the class isn't too horrible, Hendrickson just isn't your best route. He goes pretty fast and doesn't clarify things that really need to be. BUT go to the study sessions at Swain East from 5-7 on weeknights. They are the only thing that got me through the class!
I found him to be unhelpful. He constantly compares things to baseball and does nothing but makes jokes that aren't even funny. He doesn't teach at all, and is very unhelpful at office hours. He's condescending to students. He gives incredibly easy examples during class and then the homework is nothing like what he teaches. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR.
Although you may leave the class a little confused at times, he does a great job of explaining things either after class, during his office hours, or at the tutoring sessions he heads almost every weeknight at Briscoe. Honestly by far the most accessible professor and if you go to the tutoring sessions at Briscoe THIS CLASS WILL BE GREAT!!!
Jim is honestly a good guy. He means well and if you meet with him at the beginning of the semester and establish a relationship, he will be there for you. Finite gets a bad rep in general but he is one of the two good teachers for the course. I would definitely recommend taking his class. Even if you aren't his biggest fan, theres nothing better.
Too much homework is all you need to know. Assigns 25 problems regularly while all other teachers only assign 5. Tests are insanely tough and he doesn't curve tests other than the midterm and final, while all other teachers curve generously. Don't make the mistake of taking his class.
Seems like a great guy, keeps you awake in class, has a decent sense of dry humor to make you giggle on occasion. Homework is due every other day. You need to work for this grade.
Although the lectures are huge, the learning truly takes place in this course when you do your homework. Hendrickson attends briscoe's academic help center everyday for 4 hours and he is really willing to help you learn. Put in the time and you'll be good.
Jim is hands down one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Finite is honestly not hard if you put work in and pay attention. Given this, Jim is not the professor for Finite. He is overly sarcastic, embarrasses students and is generally unhelpful. At office hours, he barely helps and in class he goes off topic way too much. Choose someone else.
Jim is an okay teacher, but if you go to his office hours he is more than willing to help. I would say if you struggle with math especially with basic arithmetic (no calculators are allowed) find a different finite teacher. Jim's tests are hard.
He is really funny and entertaining and makes the boring math lectures less rough. He seems like he wants to help us understand (even though a lot of the time none of us did, except for the group of people who always sat in the 1st row). BUT, beware, if you always check your grades obsessively, he never puts them in!!! And he's a bit unreliable.
Good notes. Plenty of homework. Not very many quizzes. I always felt ready for the exams. Hendrickson was generous with his time and always available to help, especially at Briscoe.
I ended up passing the class with a C but this was due to intense studying for the final and third exam. Students in my class began crying in the midterm. Lectures are confusing and no one really understands what is going on. He gets off topic a lot and I feel that the material is never thoroughly covered. Nice enough guy though I guess.
The midterm was the hardest test I have ever taken in my entire life. Never post grades, still don't know what I got on my 3rd Exam and my final exam. You get the sense he tries to make the class as hard as possible.
Rather rude and does not teach the material. Just walks around and tries to make jokes. Treats material as if everything should be obvious, but it isn't. Withdrew from his course one time and took his class again a year later. Also, strict policy on "looking bored." He reprimanded me in front of the entire lecture because I didn't look interested.
Thought his class was fair. Homework and quizzes are there to cushion your grades so put effort into them. The online homework is difficult, so don't procrastinate on that. I thought he was very engaging in his class: he knew all of our names and had volunteers come up to complete problems. As long as you put in the effort, you should be fine.
Would not recommend. Poorly planned lectures that do not prepare students at all for the homework or tests.
I had Jim for 118 and 119, B and an A. Jim is a light-hearted guy and is more than happy to help out but he won't spoon-feed material. In class he introduces the topics, however, you learn through WebWork. He assigns a ton of problems but the practice is how you succeed. I didn't use a textbook all year. If you fail its simply a lack of effort.
Pros: Excellent and approachable Instructor. Jim's always at the Briscoe help sessions, and he can help with everything. Cons: He gives one more test than everybody else and there's plenty of homework. I got an A so I'm happy.
This class was actually fun to go to-- weird to say that about a math class. Jim really knows what students need to know, and classes are relaxed and well run. Hopefully I still feel the same after the final :-)
Hendrickson is a competent enough lecturer, but does spend a fair amount of time trying to crack corny jokes in class. Tests were fair, study the material, though be warned, I found the third exam to be considerably harder than the rest. Biggest negative is the immense amount of Webwork. Easily on average 30-60 problems a week, many multi step.
This dude loves homework. He is like 40 and has no wife so I'm convinced he is married to homework. Doesn't do a great job of teaching stuff but he gets the job done. He makes his tests pretty easy too which is nice. He assigns 4 times as many homework problems as other teachers and makes them very difficult. I have no respect for him at all.
He doesn't do much in teaching stuff. He just talks through quickly as if you are supposed to know everything in his ppt. At the end, you will have to go trough text book yourself to understand what he is talking about in class. Bad bad teacher. Worst experience. Plus, he assign tons of webwork. 4 times as many as other teachers.
Bad Prof i dont learn anything in lectures he tried to be funny and goes off topic but its just annoying. Much more Hw that other finte classes
Jim was probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He spends more time talking about baseball and making jokes than teaching and he gives more tests than any other finite teacher. The homework takes hours to complete EVERY NIGHT and is almost impossible considering he doesn't teach you how to do anything in class time.
I consider myself to be average at math at best and I struggled pretty hard with his class
Jim is possibly the worst instructor at Indiana. Would call him a professor, but he still hasn't obtained his PhD. Horrible approach to class, spends time trying to crack jokes. I'm an above average math student and still struggled because he always let class out early and in the time you spent in the room maybe 1/3 of that time was used efficientl
Jim gives ridiculous amounts of homework, but class is enjoyable and mildly fun. I would have no qualms about skipping this class (it's an 8am) if it weren't for the fact that I genuinely enjoy Jim's teaching. Friendly, approachable, and a bit of an oddball, he's the best Finite teacher possible.
Mr Hendrickson is a great guy. He's smart & personable. The lecture hall is huge & intimidating though. Go to see him at office hours or at Briscoe; he has good explanations & is very helpful. The test questions are exactly like what he says they'll be. People who don't go to class don't do well; too bad for them. I recommend Jim highly.
I was able to see Jim at Briscoe, where he volunteers his time to help everybody. Lots of people complain about Finite, but it wasn't so bad. You just have to think on your feet. Memorization, which might've worked in high school, does NOT work for 118. I got an A just doing the homework and the practice exams. No need for a tutor. Save your $!
Jim is a great professor! He is always willing to help people. I went to the Academic Support Center in Briscoe, and Jim helped me with many problems to prepare me for the tests. Also he says jokes in class to try to keep math entertaining, they are hilarious. Highly recommend this professor.
Jim is a fantastic professor. If you go to class and pay attention to his lectures, which are more entertaining than your average lecture, you will succeed. Attendance is not mandatory, however this is the reason most people struggle in this class. His lectures are very informative so if you attend class and pay attention you will succeed.
Don't buy the book. You won't need it. Jim gets off topic during class and tries to be funny. He often gets annoyed that someone is not paying attention, so he just skips that lesson and you get very confused during homework. He embarrasses people in class. Avoid taking this professor. ONLY benefit is more tests so better chance at raising grade.
He is a very nice and funny man, but does not teach all the necessary content. His style of teaching may be useful for some students, but one thing I found was that he never explained any concepts, or how to do problems, he just did them. It was hard to follow along in my opinion. But very nice guy and helpful if you utilize his office hours.
I would never take a class with this professor again. He does not provide feedback and finite is a class you need to have feedback on to move forward. Made a lot of jokes that were not funny and I don't need to come to a class where all my professor does is make stupid jokes and call students out instead of teach. Doesn't explain anything either.
I really enjoyed this class. Hendrickson made the class exciting with his hands on experience. There's one final and it was very easy, and the last half of the class is a project which was easy and you can ask him questions throughout the semester. He really cares about his students and the material.
Jim Hendrickson is by far the worst professor I've ever had. If you struggle in math DO NOT take his class. He barely explains the material and calls people out in class if they don't understand. He makes super awkward jokes and is just an awkward guy in general. He made everyone uncomfortable. The homework is endless and is very hard.
Jim is always at Briscoe helping the students there with math. Volunteering since he doesn't get paid to do it. Lots of office hours too but I usually just see him at Briscoe. He knows lots of people in the class and he seems to like all of us. Sometimes he's almost too nice. He knows just what he's doing, and doesn't fool around. Quality!
Jim Hendrickson. Where do I begin? Allegedly, he is the greatest finite teacher of all time. "So I was talking to myself, and I said self, I am going to give my students difficult exams." But truly, finite itself is a hard class and if you get to know Jim, he can really help you out. He's at the ASC literally every night and actually cares about u.
His tests have 11 answer choices per question, there are 15-25 problem 3 times a week, he doesn't curve tests when others curve over 10%, his examples have no answers, and his practice tests have no answer keys. Overall, my peers and I are expected to learn the same material but those who have Hendrickson, have a much harder situation to excel.
Overall this class was alright. Jim assigns rediculous amounts of webwork and he makes his tests WAY harder than other finite professors. Lectures were okay; sometimes I learned things, and other times I had to teach myself. He has a decent sense of humor. Very time consuming class.
Jim is that he assigns a ridiculous amount of WebWork and has very difficult exams with 11 options for each question. Lectures were never interesting but sometimes he would teach well. If you visit his office hours and have one-on-one time, you will learn, but if you don't, good luck teaching yourself. CTS will be your friend for finite.
I liked his class a lot, he explained materials very well, I attended every class this semester. He gave heavy homework and it is more difficult than other professors, but if you did everything he gave, you would pass. He also posted powerpoint online, which helped a lot while reviewing or if you missed a class.
Insane amount of homework and tests have so many different answer options. Much harder than the other profs. He bullies students.. he once threw an eraser at a student who fell asleep and he will call you out in class.
He's a nice guy and knows what he's talking about, but he's not good at teaching it. He moves too fast with notes and doesn't make the concepts easy to understand. The lecture has very little correlation to the homework for that night. It is a huge struggle just to complete most of the homework. I'm normally a good student and this class tough.
simply put, my classmates and I have been teaching ourselves. The unfathomable amount of homework rarely correlates to the preceding class and thus we are left to fend for ourselves mainly by using videos. If you get this class, drop it and take it online. It will save you from frustration and sleep deprivation.
He's a pretty cool dude but he gives way too much homework and doesn't teach well. I have to spend hours completing the homework because the majority of it is not even from the lecture and you're left trying to learn the material on your own
Pretty much teach yourself with insane amounts of homework. Doesn't teach what is on the homework and doesn't deal with struggling students at all. If you get put in this class drop or try and change professor.
Hendrickson should not have the ability to be rated on this site because he is simply not a professor in any sense. Almost all material will be up to you to learn on your own through very tedious homework. In class he explains very simple concepts that almost always cannot be applied to the homework because the homework is brand new material.
He does easy problems in class, then assigns homework not even related to what we learned. Khan Academy is more useful than showing up to his class. If you have this teacher, have fun teaching yourself everything.
If you get this "teacher" I recommend that you treat the class like an online course. He talks throughout the whole period, but manages to teach nothing, going over only very simple concepts repeatedly. You will have to teach yourself how to do the homework to earn a good grade. I stopped doing the homework to write this, that should say something
the guy's a complete jerk. thinks he has more power than he does.
If you really love doing webwork, he is your man
Gives double the homework and harder problems compared to other teachers. Funny part is, he doesn't teach you how to do any of it. You show up to class, does easy problems, then you go home to a WebWork that is written in hieroglyphics.
If you enjoy meaningless busy work, lack of instruction, lack of communication and obscene 20 question webworks then this is the place for you. For example, if he taught you about subtraction in class, the homework that night would be on quantum physics. (I really wish I was joking but that is the actual level of similarity between HW and class)
Finite is a hard class no matter who you take, but Jim was overall a good professor. His lectures aren't the best but he is always very helpful and available at the Briscoe ASC. He gives the most (and the hardest) webwork, but when it came test time I was always grateful for the extra practice. Not the greatest, but definitely not the worst.
I was worried coming into Finite, not being great at math and hearing a lot of bad things about Finite, but Jim was a really solid professor. Helpful lectures and wanted his students to succeed. The only downside what that there was a decent amount of homework, but its not nearly as bad as other people are saying and it prepared you well for exams.
Take finite online! Jim was a horrible teacher, he lectured the whole time and tries to be funny but instead you leave not understanding anything. The tests are so hard and he gives way more homework than any of the other teachers. The homework doesn't help as the problems are impossible. I am a good student and strong in math and did poorly.
Jim is one of the best professors I've had. I wasn't that great in math before taking this class. But by just attending his classes, attending review sessions, and free ACS tutoring that he provides at Briscoe, I sored above my expectations. This class isn't as hard as people exaggerate it to be. You need to put in some real work to get an A.
I had to retake finite and if youre in the same boat Im in, dont take Jims class. We only had class 2x a week and homework 3x a night which ranged from 18-30 questions PER ASSIGNMENT. Jim is a nice guy and hes funny but ignore the good reviews, if you want to have a life outside of finite and not stay up late due to workload, avoid this class.
Jim is a really interesting dude that's super passionate about math. I can say that you don't need to attend most classes to do well, just be prepared for the extensive online problems. Contrary to what other people say here, he does teach in class and it covers the quizzes. But you have to work to know the material and his class won't be easy.
Not the end of the world if you get Hendrickson for Finite. Hes not the greatest professor by any stretch of the word, but it is possible to do well in Finite with him. Pay attention to what he says and get help if you dont get something. Do ALL review (WebWork and practice tests) that is offered before a test and you wont have trouble.
I went to class like three times during the semester, and did not understand anything he was saying. However, for me, the class was naturally easy. I pretty much understood all of the homework upon reading the textbook for like ten minutes. If you're naturally good at math, take Hendrickson's class and you'll be fine. If you're not, then don't.
A really caring professor. He is at tutoring sessions almost every single night and dedicates a lot of time to students outside of class. I personally struggled in this course and should've failed but after meeting with him every day in tutoring he made sure I passed. Seek out help regularly and be rewarded.
While it seems he cares about his course, his teaching style is lazy. Lectures were bland & unhelpful b/c rather than explaining concepts he does a few sample problems. He seems eager to trick students rather than teach. He's inflexible w/ respect to COVID. He knows the material but does not teach well or seem to care if students understand/succeed
I can't say if Jim would be a good prof if I had him during a normal school year, but I do know I wanted to bash my head in when taking his online finite course during COVID. His recorded lectures were absurdly long and made little sense, and he assigned way too much webwork. His review sessions were fine but oftentimes he just ignored people's Qs.
I took this class completely online and asynchronous. There were definitely times that the lectures did not cover everything on the homework but they always covered the exam content, which could be frustrating spending extra time on work that wasn't necessary for the course. His office hours were very available but lectures required 100% attention.
Hendrickson is possibly the worst professor at Indiana University. He goes through lecture slides at the speed of light and describes them horribly and gives extremely vague answers to questions asked in class and in office hours. He does everything in his possible power to make every explanation as extremely confusing. Don't take him he's so bad.
This dude runs through easy problems in front of the class, than proceeds to assign hours of homework that did not relate to what we did in class. He also does not seem to want to talk to anyone as he just posted a grade on Friday night at 8 pm, after saying it would be out on Wednesday. Not a great teacher and kind of a rude guy.
He is bad at teaching.
Professor Hendrickson is one of the most frustrating professors ever. I understand M118 is an extremely difficult class, but he made it even harder. He teaches it in the hardest way possible, and even the math help volunteers don't understand his homework. If there's any way you can switch professors for finite, do it ASAP!
Professor Hendrickson is the the quintessential example of an awful math professor. His teaching style is to just click through slides showing the answers, but no work of how it was done. The worst part about him is how rude he is to students. if you have a question he deems "dumb" he will reply with "irrelevant" or "does not matter" and belittles.
This is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He's rude and snarky toward students when they have genuine questions and he makes you feel like anything you ask is stupid. His method to teaching is by clicking extremely fast through PP slides not waiting for anyone. He gets joy out of tricking students instead of wanting them to do well.
Moves on too quick. Doesn't teach. Tests are nothing like homework.
Though Jim is not as bad as people say, he's still not a great professor. It's still very possible to do well in Finite with Jim if you pay attention and work outside of class.
Do not take finite with this teacher if you can avoid it. He's not a good teacher. He moves wayyy to fast with his lectures that he doesn't even allow you to write everything down. Also he will make fun of you if you ask a question that questions him. He says he did his job when his entire class average on test are a 60.
Actually the worst professor, he had to take over as my professor and repeatedly told us that he did not want to teach our class. He refused to make us different homework assignments then his other classes so we had hw on MWF when the class was TTh, I took AP Calc in highschool and had to drop his class as i had a D. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He's the worst math teacher I've encountered. The lectures dont make sense and he hardly explains any of it and then you go do the homework and it looks nothing like you've seen during class. I hated the class so much. If you're not good at math he's not the professor you want. I switched to a different teacher and I ended up passing the class.
Put finite in perspective for a second. This is a hard class by any standards, and Hendrickson actually has one of the higher rate my scores. Not my favorite class or professor by any means, but he gets results. His style is giving students lots of work and practice, and relies heavily on the student working for it. I surprised myself with an A-.
I barely got a B in this class. I couldn't skip class because I knew I wouldn't understand and even though I didn't miss one I still never knew what was going on.
Good teacher with lots of enthusiasm.
I always loved maths and I was very good in maths in my high school. Because of this professor I hate maths now and I am literally scared of maths. My real professor went so he took her class but he treated us so bad and his real class so nicely. He does not reply to emails. I constantly emailed him but he never replied.
Heartless person doesnt care about his students.
He is just by far one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. I loved math in previous years but this class has made me absolutely despise it. I worked so hard for a straight B it's laughable. If you don't study or do the work, you will not pass and will have to drop. Avoid this teacher at all costs. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS
While he may be a rather entertaining individual, I'd rather not have him in control of my grade. Lots of homework that may be too overwhelming or too difficult for the courses he teaches, and quite a bit of "easy, right?" It's difficult to be passionate about math after taking one of his courses, especially if you're already on the edge.
He is so bad. He actually makes fun of his students in class and is not willing to answer questions. His notes and powerpoint make no sense and doesn't show all the steps when solving problems. His tests were near impossible.
This dude sucks regret not dropping this class. He sets you up for failure because he doesn't teach and doesn't care that you don't understand.
AVOID JIM! I attended every lecture, tutoring 4 nights a week and still had to drop the class. I went to office hours too, he was late 1hr,and once he walked away from me and never came back.Exams/hw/notes nothing alike. He will either laugh or ignore you when you ask a question. My tutor begged me to get him fired. Sets you up for failure.
Not sure why Jim gets such a bad rep here because he does a good job of teaching the content. If he's going too fast, raise your hand he'll go through it slower. We do problems in class where he'll walk around and answer your questions, which is hard to get in lectures usually. Has higher grade distributions than most. I'd recommend him to anyone.
Finite is either very easy or very hard for some people; that being said, Mr. Hendrickson is very nice, but his lectures are fast-paced. I would recommend going to the group sessions at CTS + their exam/midterm/final review sessions-- they make it easier to understand. Went to group sessions before every class and concepts finally started to click!
Jim is a great teacher in my opinion. He made it a point to learn the names of his students, and loves to joke around during class. We do a lot of problems on the board in class, and you can raise your hand to ask questions or if you think he's going too fast. He usually gives a clear and concise response to each question asked. I highly recommend.
By far the WORST professor I ever had at IU. DO NOT take finite math with this absolute joke of a teacher
One of the most difficult classes you can take is finite math with this professor. His lectures and PowerPoints are borderline nonsensical, he does not answer questions and class and will shame you for attempting to ask, skips concepts that WILL appear on exams, does not answer emails. If you are in this class, DROP or he will make sure you fail
Do not take him as a teacher. Worst experience with a teacher I've ever had. He does not teach well and is of no help if you try to clarify anything with a question to him.
Avoid this professor if possible - his teaching style is unclear and he's not responsive to questions. However, using resources like unstuckstudy and the free textbook may help offset the challenges.
This was the worst professor I have ever dealt with. Classtime is completely wasted through him talking about irrelevant questions. He loved calling out students and making them embarrass each other. I do not see how this man still has a job here. NEVER take his courses if you don't want to hate your life for the entire semester.
if you struggle with math AT ALL, he's terrible. actively makes fun of his students for asking questions, jokes around instead of teaching for half the class. office hours are the same way. rarely curves tests and the homework is IMPOSSIBLE. avoid at all costs.
Jim is a great guy, but I did not like his teaching style at all. It's very difficult to follow along and he's just not the greatest teacher. I've sat in lectures for the same class with another professor, and he does a much better job at explaining the material. Jim is nice, but not a good teacher. I would take this course with a different teacher
Tests will make up the majority of your grade. Test grade averages are consistently very low. Openly criticises students publicly. You will have three weekly homework assignments that take at least an hour each. Do not take unless you already have a strong understanding of the material.
He was not a good professor, teaching math with powerpoint. It was very hard to follow. The homework was harder than lectures. He did not care about students wellbeing, understanding or time. Took forever to grade exams and unclear about the way assignments were going to be graded.
Criticizes students and makes students feel bad for asking questions. Homework has nothing to do with what he does in class and is way harder than what he ever teaches or anything on the exam. Homework assignment after each class and it can take hours to do, and he was very unclear about grading. Didn't know my grade for most of the semester.
The worst professor I have ever had. Literally just yaps about the topic rather than actually teaching it. Also goes ridiculously fast when "teaching".
Sucks at teaching, can't understand anything. Makes math 10x harder
awful teacher
If I could give Hendrickson a rating of 0 I would. I had him for Math B110 and he was genuinely one of the worst teachers I have ever had. If you can take anyone else for B110 I highly recommend doing so as Jim only teaches for PowerPoints and fails to explain anything.
"Are we Alive" Bro speeds through the slides and does not teach, makes you feel like this class is one big review of math and not teaching it.
Never again. As someone always willing to give "bad" teachers a chance, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He genuinely cannot teach. He barely shows the formula, and then just skips the answer as if we all know how to solve it. I could see this being easy if you already took calculus and stats, but if you haven't, please pick another professor, or pay for tutoring.
awful. do not take.
The worst teacher I've ever had at IU. Take B110 with any other professor, and you'll be so grateful. Throws many curveballs on exams since the actual exams are harder than practice exams.
This professor might be one of the worst teachers I've ever had. The material isn't that challenging; he doesn't teach. He flips through slides so quickly and barely even explains, then asks, "Are you alive?" No, I am not. I dread the days I have to walk 30 minutes across campus to go sit in his class and do nothing. He does have good office hours.
I have literally NEVER had a worse teacher. He flips through a powerpoint and asks "are you alive?". DO NOT take B110 with him and save yourself, your GPA and your happiness. I genuinely would never recommend anyone to take a course with him as you will sit in his class and contemplate your whole life.
He is the worst teacher that I have ever had. He flies through the slides and doesn't care if the students understand the material at all. Don't take!
Save yourself, the teacher doesn't care about anyone. I got an A because I already knew the content but don't take this professor.
Jim offers a special type of extra credit...I urge you all to take the offer!
Homework took me 5-6 hours to complete every week and did little to actually prepare for the exams. If you don't already know the content going in you'll have to teach yourself EVERYTHING outside of class because it's impossible to learn the concepts in class. In-class assignments every single class so attendance is MANDATORY. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND.
He's actually a nice guy, but a bad professor. He rushes through the slides and makes the content much harder than it really is. The homework is nothing like what's in class. DO NOT use it to study. Be ready to teach yourself everything. I will say he is accessible during office hours. There are in-class assignments, so attendance is mandatory
