Hardest tests I have ever taken! Hard to understand.
superior attitude, lectures do not reflect exams , unreasonable, avoid him!!!!!!
He sucks and shouldn't be teaching.
This prof is the WORST prof I've EVER had. He CAN'T teach, he's RUDE, he doesn't go over what is on the exams. HE SUCKS! I can't believe he is still teaching! YOU SUCK HSIEH! He acts like he's nice the first day though, then, get ready for a C- or F.
He ranks as one of the worst professors. He cannot get his point across to the class; he does not even know his finance well enough to be teaching and I have seen be very rude to students who did not understand.
He doesn't know what he is talking about at all, plus he likes to make fun of guys more than girls.Lack of info. on his exams, and please do not rely on the sample exams!
Avoid him at all costs! Even if you have to graduate a semester later! Horrible teacher Mason should really get rid of him!
Very rude, disrespectful. Difficultly level of his exams do not match his level of lectures. He is very unhelpful and can not even pronounce economy. I wonder how he got his PHD. Messed up educational system.
Its very likely your grade average for the class would be an F upto the final, and then expect a miracle to happen.
Avoid this guy!!!! He sucks and you will regret it you took him...
he sucks get him out
HATE HIM
Hes not that bad. He lectures good but tests very very hard. He will though curve a lot at the end. Be prepared to study hard. Make sure you know all the material because he tends to trick you on the tests. I give him a B grade for a teacher.
Very Rude, avoid this professor, you can't even understand him (instead of Bond Holders, he says Bong Holders) 2 mid-terms,1 final and a semester project
Very clear and precise. You expect what's on the exam!!!
Doesn't he realize Final Exam review should actually cover the stuff on the Final? very unfair test the 2 main problems on the final were not on the review.
If you are serious about finance, take this class. Tough at first, but gets easier as you go along. He has failed alot of people up to summer 2004 but was much easier in fall 2004. Going to class and doing hw probs. a must to pass.
Make sure you ask him all you need to know before teacher evaluations are complete. Once the evaluations are done, good luck with getting in touch with him, he is absolutely no help at all, that is unless you are a girl. Also, everything on the final exam review is NOT on the final exam!
This is a difficult class in general. Do not take this class unless you will study your butt off. His exams are deadly. Keep in mind that hw problems are on the exam, but they are worded differently. By the time u find out what to do, your time is up.
he grades his exams out of 50pts and they have 10 or so MC and a few problems, but the MC are worth 3 pts a piece and count 6% so if you mess up your screwed. he teaches well but the feeling I got was that students felt that they knew the material better than their grades displayed due to his exams
If you pay attention, take good notes, study lecture notes and do hw probs, you can pass with a successful grade. However, this class will require effort, so no pain no gain. This is fnan after all--you knew what you were getting into.
Extremely difficult and mean. It is very hard to ask this quy a question because instead of giving an answer, he usually says something mean. He is a very hard grader. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible.
i will not lie, he is a hard teacher. if you do the homework you will be successful. also, DO NOT miss class, tests come straight from the lecture problems and hw. also try to learn it on your own, he is not helpful. so like i said, do the hw and get the solutions manual and you'll be fine..
This is a hard class and he doesn't let you slide through. You have to go to class and do the homework! shocker!! If you do this it is an easy B, for an A you gotta really work.
He's definitely a good professor and you'll definitely walk away feeling that you've learned something, whether or not you thought his exams were tough. However, he is a bit distant and formal when it comes to student interaction. Not that he's got anything against you, that's just the way he is.
This teacher is awful. I can't believe George Mason hires people like him. He should really be fired. You can't understand a word coming out of this guys mouth. Then if you ask him a question, he looks at you like you said something so out of the world. Do not take this guy's class under any condition. He is the most unfair teacher in the who
He is just no social ladies and gentlemen. Do not try to start a conversation. Replies are only expected if you show that you have been trying to understand the concept or the question yourself. Tries to be like ferri but comes acrross a little mean. READ THE BOOK FOR DETAIL. Once again, don't try to be friends with him. Doesn't work.
teaches good, Not helpful, Rude, no help if u go to his office, however makes sure u understand and gives u chance to ask questions in class, picks on people as participation grade which is 5 % , memorize all studen'ts names quickly, n know everyone by names. notes,hw,n his lectures are imp, dont miss clas, no need to read chapters
If you think Walpuck was bad, wait til you meet this guy. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. If you're a brown noser he might take a liking to you too. ;) Accent is awful. Doesn't answer questions well, he only repeats his lecture. Very stuck up on his lecture, do not ask anything beyond you will be shot down. It's exactly what you'd expect from a Mason t
If you read the comments, they basically say, "do not take his class." I'm here to reinforce this. He's a total jerk, mad at the world and takes it out on his class. Short little asian guy, guess he's mad at his height. Class was easy for me, can't explain but you've learned it all in statistics. I took 411 at the same time and learned the who
I would recommend any teacher but this one. He is not helful at all and is pretty mean. He just want you to listen to his lecture and then study on your own. He does not like to explain anything that you ask an explanation for. Its hard to understand his accent. Basically if you take his class, you will have to study on your own.
Very unclear, very unhelpful, and very rude. He does not know how to teach. He does not speak very clear or teach with detail. Wait for another teacher to teach this class another semester if you can.
If you think Walpuck was bad, wait till you meet this guy. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Very stuck up on his lecture. If you ask a question beyond the lecture, be prepared to be shot down. AVOID AT ALL COST!! Made me re think my major in FNAN.
This guy is rude. It is hard to ask him a question because he doesn't understand you, it is so hard to apprach him. DON'T EVER TAKE HIS CLASS.
The class is hard but I feel I have learned a lot. He is not a social person, but teaches well. If u go to all classes and do hw, you will be fine. If you try to get an easy grade, you will be dead.
This guy is too rude. He does not want to help his students at all. Can't teach well at all. Bad accent. AVOID taking any of his classes at all costs.
I have learned so much from him. He doesn't interact well with students, but will help you if you go to his office. He also lectures well. Exams are hard. Not difficult to pass the course, but need to study a lot to get a good grade.
Finance is tough stuff, but Hsieh's class is not too bad. If you goto class, you'll do well. Curves generously.
The tests are pretty hard and the project was vague. You have to put in a lot of effort to get a good grade. Be prepared to study and work hard.
Jim is a wonderful teacher. Although you may think he is condescending, I do not think he means to be that way. His lectures are very informative and his tests require you to know the material and think through a question. This class is challenging! I recommend him if you truly want to learn portfolio investment principles.
this man put me back two semesters worth of understanding finance. NEVER take him. He mocks you in class, and tells you to "stud-dy hhaaaddaahhh" as advice when you go to his office with a question.
I don't know what people are talking about........but i loved him, he is the greatest teacher ever. What i learned in this class helps me with other Finance courses. If u don't get a good grade in this class, i think finance is not for u. All the best!!
If it is possible, stay away from him. He is really hard and test you on what he does not even cover.
This is the toughest class I have taken so far, but I learned a lot in this class. If you are serious about investment and don't mind the instructor's personality, take 311 from him. Go to class and do HW and sample exams. You will do fine.
His exams are hard. He does favor to Asian People, specially girls. He just call on some students while participation is 5% of your grade. He can't explaine well.
Please do not take this class with him. You will not end up with happy grade.
You are lucky that he is not teaching in Fall. This guy is hard, real hard. Don't expect to be prepare for exam according to his sample. Very strange person. He has no style of teaching.
I don't know what people are talking about. My bf told me not to take the course from him. but after the class is over, I am glad I did. He only covered several chapters, but in depth. Do HW and sample exams. U will do fine.
Great class, you learn a whole lot. The class is hard and there is a lot of material, but he covers everything in depth, exams are similar to the samples he posts on webct. Attendance is mandatory!!
pretty good teacher, you have the learn the material in depth, but it isnt that hard, didnt attend class that often, but studied notes inside and out, pulled a A-... very nice teacher,
I think hes a great teacher, you go to class, fill in the powerpoint slides and study from them. I pulled an A- only because I made a stupid mistake on the first exam. Final is random, its suppose to be cumulative but it only consisted of 2-3 chapters.. which was nice, but pissed me off for studying everything else. Great guy, interesting class..
F..K Him! The final was exteamly hard, hard and hard. I would take the other guy who doesn't give a group project. If you don't have good members, BYE BYE. Anyways, he never used book b/c we use his lecture notes only which it is created by this professor.
He is one of the best professors at GMU. Lectures are very well organized, and he will start every lecture by reviewing the what he went thru in last classes. YES HE IS HARD! Tests consist of mc, calculation, and short answer, and they are hard! Attendance is mandatory. Do the sample tests, and the hw problems, take note in class! good luck!
Holy crap. First of all he gets pissed if you leave to go pee. so you better go to the restroom before class. Second, his powerpoint slides posted on blackboard are incomplete so it makes you go to class. You better make friends with classmates or youre screwed. If you ask him a question he NEVER answers it
Questions? Questions? No questions? Ok let me ask you a question! Questions on the exam are much more difficult than the examples on the slide and the book. Final exam was 100 times harder than the two midterms
He's a very good professor. Just attend the class and study the notes. Exams are easy. I got full mark in the first and second exam.
Hard! Not impossible by any means, but he is not a good professor. Not very interesting and not clear when explaining slides. BUST YOUR ASS FOR THE FIRST EXAM, that one is a gimme, the other two are hard! Still much easier than Ferri and I don't think he fails anyone
Better than Ferri. Make sure you attend class and keep taking notes, it'll help you a LOT..!! Curves heavily.. and a decent grader, unlike Ferri
Questions? Questions? No questions? Ok let me ask you a question! exactly like this
I took this dude 5 years ago the year I graduated. I was just talking to some people and remembered the story about how he asked out one of the Asian girls on a date. Needless to say, she got an A and she was pretty dumb. I don't remember too much about the actual class since I slept through 90% of my classes in Mason. Finance Dept is a joke.
Great professor, highly organized and follows through. I took him last semester and was pleased - learned a lot. Final was hard and I do not think you can actually prepare for it. Just do well throughout the course and he will pass you. BTW, fnan department might have been a joke 5 years ago, now is great - am learning a lot. Good instructors.
Be careful, he is a tricky, dangerous teacher.
Nice man. However you get through the class wondering "how is this gonna help." Some communication issues
i never read the book, just do his practice exam problems, cuz similiar prob on his exams, multiple come from book, take notes because ppt are empty slides. he curves exams only based on his sections, he curves at the end so students end up with a C.
He knows his stuff, but sometimes I feel like he can't really deliver the information to students. His class may seem easy (because is boring) but his exams are pretty hard. Take notes and write down everything he says in class! Study the practice exams and do all the homework problems and you should be....ok? Good luck on the final!
Can be tricky but all in all he knows his stuff. Do well early on and then you will be set after. Don't need the book, just do his practice problems.
My advice, know which of his slides are blank before class so you know what you need to take notes on. Do the problem sets over and over there are similar Q's on the test. Practice exams also helped a little bit. The math part of the tests are relatively easy, the concept part is where he is very tricky, so know your stuff and take detailed notes.
Professors should "know there stuff". The things that set a professor apart, delivery, helpfulness, getting the student interested in learning, are nonexistent with Jim. Grades on showing work how he wants it. If correct and some work is shown credit should be given. This isn't 5th grade Jim. Another GMU Fin prof that is just collecting a check
I didn't appreciate him that much while I was in his class, but man I would give anything to have him teach 411 rather than my current professor. At least Hsieh is clear in his explanations and you can understand when he speaks. Very knowledgeable professor who keeps you on your toes during lecture by calling on you for questions.
Generally, I liked him more than my other GMU Finance professors. You have to go to class and take notes on his slides. The book was pretty useless. My only criticism is that the test problems were far trickier than the practice problems. You have to really know how the formulas relate to each other. I found him to be polite, helpful & respectful.
Very good. Helpful. Works through problems in class. Easy to understand. Nice guy. Tests are hard.
Goes over several examples during his lectures, so itd be better if you didnt skip his class as those problems are similar to the exams. it is very possible to get an A, but will require effort (at this level there is no easy A). Pay attention to lectures, review lecture examples, and do the suggested hw. 2 sided cheat sheet allowed for all exams.
He is a very good teacher. His lectures were very clear and covered several examples that were similar to the problems on the exams. If you go to class, pay attention, workout the lecture problems and homework problems, you should have no trouble in passing this class with a decent grade. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours.
Professor Jim have been teaching in Mason for 16 years, his lecture is a little boring. However, if you pay attention to his class, and take notes. you will end up learning a lot. Just one trick, try your best to get better grade on your First and Second Exam, because all his final is insane. (however, he will curve it if no one gets 100%)
Let me be as clear as possible: DO NOT TAKE HIM. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I am an all A student and I study hours on end for all of my classes and I have never taken a class with someone as stupid as this guy. He has absolutely no clue how to teach anything nonetheless FNAN311. Do yourself a favor, and do not ever take it with him for any reason.
Horrible Professor. Never take this guy's class
CFA level exams. not recommended at all!
Tough class but if you do the class problems and homework you should be fine overall. I don't think you'll get less than a B if you just study and do the practice problems. If you don't like his lectures and find it a bit boring then maybe you should not have majored in Finance.
just go to class and make sure you print out the slides he got online cause most of them are empty. if you got the slides, took notes, and did the practice problems at the end of the chapter you should get at least a c. his lectures might be boring but he deliver the materials perfectly. I would take him again if I had the chance to.
Highly recommend you take both his 311 and 411 courses. His lectures are very informative and helpful. His tests ARE difficult as it tests the most difficult concepts you are over class. Despite the difficulty, he is EXTREMELY forgiving when grading tests and adds a curve. You will learn and should get a good grade IF you do your due diligence.
There are 3 exams, 1 group project, and along with participation those are the only grades for the semester. The 3 exams are open note, open book. But keep in mind this is a hard class! You must read the chapters, take good notes, and attend/watch the lectures if you want to succeed. I personally would not take him again.
Three exams are open note/book and worth 100% of your grade. Exams 1 & 2 (15 MC), Final Exam (20 MC). It is essential to watch the lectures because the topics are well explained and it will help you understand the content that you need to know for the exam. Reading the textbook and doing the textbook practice problems isn't necessary.
I took Hsieh for FNAN 311 and I am taking him again for FNAN 411. I really liked learning about the material in his course. He seems knowledgeable and his lecture videos were easy for me to understand. Beware, for online, he will make his own exams to help prevent cheating, so you need to learn the material. You will not find his exam on Chegg!
Hsieh is one of the worst professors I've ever had. Consecutively 5 minutes late to class every day. Very unclear during lectures. Tests are difficult. No study guides. Only practice is homework from textbook. Guessing game on what is going to be on tests. One positive, extra credit for class participation. Would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is always late for his class and the tests are not even related to the homework. Final are crazy horrible, it's not cover in the HW he gave you. I'm pretty sure he didn't care about his students at all. IDK why he can teach at Mason for that long lmao.
He's kind but he makes you do statistical calculations by hand with a note sheet when other professors let you use Excel and the internet. He'll also grade you down by 60% of the point value of a problem if you put a wrong number in the calculator despite having the right formula with the right numbers written down at every step of the calculation.
Professor Jim is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable and also passionate about what he teaches. He gave us three quizzes and drops the lowest score, worth 40% in total, 40% for the final, 15% on a group project that is easy, and 5% for CP. He also a generous grader, if you have the right inputs, you will have a good grade.
Professor Jim, unfortunately, had a different teaching way that im sure more than half of the class cant understand it. He uses empty PowerPoints that you will have to take notes to fill them up. He mentions stuff will be on the quizzes or exams but then you notice new stuff that you never learn before. Please avoid him if u want to pass.
Good professor, easy grader!
Responds to emails quickly; usually same day. Only grades are tests (3 of 4 used, drops lowest) and the final. PPTs are good and he sends out answer keys to the hw to help study. Does not grade the hw, it's just for your practice. All tests/quizzes are open note/open book, and allows 90-120mins. Would take again, but make sure to study!
Homework was not required but "supplemental" to in-class problem solving. Must go to class to learn how to do the problems b/c the homework explanation was super unhelpful. One attempt per quiz and 3/4 quizzes stay as a part of the final grade. If you could coerce him to give another attempt, it would be to your benefit. Textbook was never used.
