Hard, but definitely fair. Interesting lectures, uses frequent film clips to illustrate points. Don't take this class unless you plan to work your butt off reading and remembering.
annoying voice, says ummm and clears his throat WAY too much. too hard.
All though lectures were very detailed. He gives great handout and is very approachable and helpful. Not to metion he does a fabulous job of recruiting helpful and insightful T.A.s that work well with the students.
responds to my emails promptly, really smart and knows his stuff, way too hard, i was looking to fulfill my gur mot major in criminal justice!
hard class, but good prof
Good teacher - very knowledgable. Be prepared to work for your grade
Very had class with lots of memorization of facts and reading. Very interesting though, but sometimes hard to take in so much information.
Interesting class, horrible professor. Knows his stuff, but I had a very difficult time understanding his lectures. You have to know the material in order to do well, and even that won't guarantee a good grade all the time.
very hard class, interesting, don't take it unless you want to read for hours and hours and hours on end. very smart, always knows the answers to your questions, fair and will bargain with you for exam grades.
Smart, nice guy, but bad at communicating. I had trouble concentrating because he clears his throat so much and his lectures aren't that structured. I got a decent grade but only because he curves grades, I learned basically nothing.
Very hard, his lectures are loosely put together & there's so much info to know that it's basically impossible to do well. He does curve, which I'm sure is the only way most people get good grades. Don't take unless you already know the subject.
hard class for sure, but an intelligent prof. tests are difficult but fair and scaled incredibly, my C's on the tests got scaled so much that i ended the class with an A

very difficult class. horrible prof. i was totally distracted by his hair and his smoker's cough the whole quarter. when his paces across the stage his hair does this cockatoo thing...it's pretty funny
REALLY intresting guy. I tell people you either like him or you don't. he's VERY knowledgable in sociology, especially crime. Lots to know on exam, but he is very fair in grading. Gives excellent help to clarify things, but you have to ask him.
Definately an interesting fellow. You leave lecture either confused or tired, unless you are one of the few who can stick with him. I didn't mind the class itself, but as a teacher, he could be better.
This was a very hard class to get through.. The lectures weren't really worth going to because you couldn't understand what he's saying most of the time, and when you do it turns into off the topic ramblings. He knows a lot about law and crime, but the problem is deciphering what he's trying to say.
Really interesting class, and he basically gives you all the test questions if you just study the review. But he grunts a lot and is unbelievable difficult to understand. Really liked the class overall though.
yes, his hair is constantly pompadoured up in a distracting cock-a-too. yes, he clears his throat more times than a vicks vapourrub commercial. But if anything, he's a very intelligent man that will teach you a lot about the criminal justice system, even how to talk cops out of MIPs.
I have an enormous passion for Sociology. That being said, this guy is about as ingaging as a bag of hair and about as intelligalbe as Ozzy Osbourne after a serious of life threatening strokes. He is obviously intelligent, but no way in hell can one understand what he is talking about. He needs to pu

ummmmmm.... that about says it all
If you can get past his mannerisms, he is a brilliant guy who knows tons about criminal justice. Tests are pretty straight forward. Know the study guide and you'll be fine. Loved the class.
Way too obsessed with Marxism. Sometimes in his theory class I decided it was all he knew. But then, he is also just about the most helpful and funny prof I've had. He really prefers a bold writing styles and hates passive voice. It's a good thing.
Engaging professor, I really appreciated his sense of humor and command of sarcasm. Plus, he REALLY knows his stuff. Was also laidback and easy to talk to. His tests were pretty difficult, he tended to try and cover too much in just three tests. If he broke them down a bit more it would be b
VERY helpful
lectures were very unclear and very disorganized, went in for extra help, wasn't there during his office hours, has no interest in student success. not lenient or helpful even when there's a death in the family. would not reccommend.
Lectures are very unorganized and unclear. He posts the notes online which does help a little. Tests are straight forward, tests questions are just like the quiz ones. He definitely knows his stuff, but he could make the course a whole lot more interesting.
Total crap. You can't understand him and he's about the most poorly organized prof I've ever had. You can't tell what's important and what's not...However, if you memorize teh practice test you'll do well. I learned nothing from this class. If anything it was a good time for me to work on homework for my other classes.

This guy is a total badass. He's a genius and his lectures were amazing. He's also hilarious. Basically, I'm in love with him.
This was a very difficult class. The study group I was in (which I highly suggest) met twice a week and the Sehome Starbucks became our home...literally. He is very unclear, and obviously knows to much in his cynicle little mind to be an undergraduate professor..he should teach grad school. He is helpful if you seek him out, just come prepared.
Very hard to follow in lecture. Tests are unpredictable and unreasonable (mostly essay). He picks favorites in class (guys - which sucks b/c sociology is a female-dominated major) and doesn't know how to handle students who seek help.
If you do the reading and show up for class, you'll do just fine!...Isn't that a crazy idea!
I had him three times at Western and he got better everytime. Sure his tests were difficult but he was always available to help through email or in his office. I learned a ton in his classes and I really enjoyed his sarcasm, wow. I remember the time in the theory class that he began to recite lyrics from Eminem's "the real slim shady"...funny as hell.
If you put a reasonable about of effort into the class, then you'll be fine. He curves the exams which makes them exceptionally easy, and he uses a lot of the questions from his practice tests on the real test.
Dr. Inverarity is the most helpful professor I have ever had. He is always there to help, and he will always go the extra mile to give you help if you ask for it. He can seem a bit unclear to a lot of people in his lectures because of his brilliance, but the tests are curved in such a way that they end up being EASY. A 75% ends up being an A.
The man knows his stuff, but lectures are boring as all hell. He teaches directly out of the book, but you have to show up for every lecture because he gives some stuff on the tests not covered in the book. Tests range from 60-90 questions each time, and there are 4 each. Very difficult and boring.
If you can make out what he's saying between his stutters and and somehow not get distracted by his crazy hair then you will surley realize that he does a good job ruining a class that could potentially be really cool
He knows what he is talking about but he cannot teach it nor can he keep his classes awake. Very boring to listen to. Tests are hard, but he does take some of the questions from the sample tests. Final is cumulative and VERY long. I do not advise taking this class.
The guy has quirks, but who doesn't? Very helpful and knowledgable.
This class is one of the hardest I've ever taken at Western and one of the most boring. Inverarity is a brilliant man and it is obvious in his lectures but he is incapable of communicating the information to the class in a clear, understandable way. The tests cover a huge amount of information and you pretty much end up teaching it to yourself.
He can sometimes forget that he's talking to undergrads, but is very helpful if you have any questions. The tests are curved...a lot. Exam questions often come straight from in-class quizzes. In-class quizzes are just for attendance and aren't scored. What more could you ask for?
Man his classes are SO HARD TO ATTEND...he's so boring and I always end up sleeping. He's organized and VERY helpful though if you go see him personally in office hours. I was pretty surprised about that. He makes you work for your grade too. His exams are pretty hard, but his study guides are awesome.
WOWWWW. If you see this guy teaching a class that you want to take, then stay clear....for your own benefit. Horrible communicator, and so boring. Study and get a gauranteed C or less. I found myself guessingon his 100+ multiple choice exams....cool
Prof Inverarity tires hard and is knowledgeable. He shows the occaisional interesting video. His notes are incomprehensible and his lectures are mostly boring. His tests are far more complicated than necessary. They reflect memorization and guessing skills much more than actual learning, and a majority of the class fails, but study guides do help.
I love Inverarity's class. I guess that goes to show that some profs work for some people and not others. Just do your**** and study (hard) and you should do well.
I had him for 255 and 355. His class was pretty easy for both. I found myself not going to his class more and more, but not because I didn't like him. Study his notes that he posts online and if you do go to class, keep your quizzes because he takes test questions straight from them. He is very helpful and easy to talk to in his office.

Quite possibly the single worst course I have ever taken. Although the lecture notes are available to download in case of a missed class, many are in dire need of spelling and grammatical proofreading! Exams are confusing as hell, and they only get worse as the course ambles on. Speaking of ambling on..........bring strong black coffee!!
The tests are worded horribly and it's almost impossible to know what he wants us to get from the information. his lecture notes are written to help him speak in class, not to help us learn. I really wanted to take this class before, but now i'm regretting the decision.
He's very knowledgeable and he grades on a curve which is nice. Only downfall to his class is for the exams that he asks way too many questions (90 questions in a 80 minute class period) which results in rushing through the entire time. Other than that if you like sociology or criminal justice I highly recommend him.
Very boring. Too much crim justice not enough soc. Cant stand lectures. Failed every test, but with his very strong curve for his detailed tests, I easily managed an A. The only reason someone should take this course is if it is a requirement for a crim justice major. If you are going for a soc, steer clear and take ANY other intro soc course.

Not a bad class. The presentations that we had to do were a little pointless. A LOT OF READING. If you do most of the reading, go to every class (quizes just about every class), and pay attention at least half the time you'll be fine.
Very unclear, scattered prof. completely random thoughts, and hard to follow. however, his quizzes are based on attendance, and he uses many of the questions of exams. the study guide is very useful as well. He is very dull and boring, and classes are hard to attend. However, if you study quizzes and study guide you'll do fine.curves grades too
Jim is a good professor. You just need to learn to siphon through some of his scattered thoughts in lecture. As long as you can keep up with all of the readings you'll do fine. His quizzes are graded on attendance and are a perfect study guide for exams. If he sets up a study group, DO IT. He's totally different in person and smaller groups.
Hmm, not as interesting as it sounded. he's clearly knowledgeable and fond of his subject, and his humor makes things a little less boring. But there was too much reading!! and his lecture pace was really fast, and he never covered everything in the notes, so you pretty much had to read the notes atop everything else. you might want to avoid.
When you take this class do bring Coffee, Tea, or any caffeinated beverage that will keep you up! His lectures are on interesting material, however, his presentation of it is dry. If you read the book, his notes, and study the practice test you will be fine. He curves grades as well so thats good. For the final study all of the old tests.
I think that he has a much worse rep then he deserves. I found this class to be challenging but at the time I am writing this I am getting a very solid A. I took full advantage of his office hours which helped a lot. He is not a good people person but this is college and he is knowledgeable That's what counts. A little boring. Go to class!
I came into this class sure that I'm going to fail, right now I'm getting a solid B. Go to class, read the books and get have pretty good idea of whats going on and you'll do well. He realizes that this isn't everyone's dream course and makes it pretty fair. Gives quizzes for attendance.
Extremely difficult class in comparison to what I was expecting, but I got out of it more than I thought as well. Lectures are hit or miss, but they didn't bother me. Very knowledgeable, and --loves-- helping students (but only when they ask for it)
Decent guy. Obviously really knows and likes the subject, just can't convey that to his students. Lectures are essentially useless as he makes little sense and adds little to the notes anyway. But they're mandatory because of the quizzes. Good guy, poor teacher. Unfortunate.
I'm not going to say this class was a breeze, because it isn't. You have to study and go to class. My advice to you, get into a study group with some people you enjoy hanging out with and meet once a week to decipher his notes. The best idea is to rewrite the notes and add your own during lecture. You have to put it in words that you understand.
This man is the most awful professor I have ever taken a class from in my entire life. He stutters, he struggles to get his point across. Quiz every day for attendance, and three tests. Puts notes online, they are sometimes helpful, sometimes just makes you more confused. If you can take 302 with Richardson, take that route instead
Nice guy. Really boring, sadly enough. Asks questions to the class and is answered with blank stares. His study guides are really helpful for the tests, and the in-class quizzes are almost word for word on exams. Books are essentially useless. Go to class, he gives quizzes almost every day. He is actually very smart but doesn't lecture too well.
I enjoyed his 255 class much more than the 302. Lectures are fairly boring but pretty straightforward; had some interesting video clips as well. Online practice test questions are copied exactly on exams. Quite a brilliant guy but not the best speaker. If he holds an out-of-class study session, go to it! Do the work and you'll be fine.
So bored in class! Skips around in lecture. His notes are not helpful and its not really important to go to class, just read the chapters, and do the practice tests. He takes 90% of his test questions straight from the practice tests.
This class had interesting subject matter however the lectures were pretty boring. He's a nice guy who is very smart, but just doesn't deliver lectures in the most interesting manner. Read the material, especially the cases. His practice exams are 90% of the tests. I'd recommend this class.
Jim is really a committed teacher, he loves the subject but sometimes his explanations were indecipherable. He was always willing to help, although, it wasn't always that helpful, he sort of talks in circles. WARNING: You will fall asleep during this class, other then that, I put in medium-hard work and got a B. Pay attention to his awesome hair.
Inverarity is the man. The negative comments on here must reflect an insolent and lethargic part of our student body.. Jim's not funny!?!? Maybe you don't think so because his jokes are flying over your head..
I learned so much in this class, historical tid bits about Affirmative Action and Stratification that continuously make me think. Jim is brilliant and his sense of humor is sarcastic and witty. Tests are very challenging so study hard!
Very abstract class. Lots of information to retain. Study the notes and understand all of the terms and people before the test, and know how to apply them. Teacher was very committed to subject, helpful, and curves on a generous curve, but students can fail to miss his points so study hard!
I took 302 last quarter and got a good grade after A LOT of hard work. He is a great and intellectual teacher who will help you any time you need to meet with him. For the people who complain about being bored in his classes, did you really expect to be entertained in college?
he's a good guy, pretty funny, and obviously knows what he's talking about. He's very smart. he has a real tough problem preparing his students for exams. It's hard to pay attention because he can get pretty boring. if you're in this class MAKE SURE you read class notes and textbook material BEFORE going to that lecture. It'll help tremendously.
He knows his stuff, that's for sure. Though, I'm not sure he knows how to prepare his students. The readings were usually long, and his lectures tend to go on tangents that don't really make sense and confused many people. But he graded the tests on a curve, so that means if no one really understood it--then you still did decently!
Interesting stuff, intelligent prof. 3 MC tests, are pretty hard. They're really long and sometimes unclear. Covers a lot of material which makes it hard. Always posts notes, and practice quizzes which are helpful - but I still managed to do poorly because of the MC tests. Overall OK class
He isnt that bad. If you study, go along with the class notes and use the study guide you should get a good grade. it wasnt that hard. I barely went to class and didn't really read the books, just the class notes and study guide.
People in class would say that this prof is really hard, but coming out of the class I have to disagree. All I had to do was keep the random "attendance" quizzes and read the syllabus and I walked through that class. It's interesting material for the most part. He can be dry and seems very severe, but he was always super helpful with questions.
Mumbles and stutters during lectures. Very unclear lectures. He knows his subject but fails to present it in an interesting form. Tests are curved. 80 questions in 90 min. Class average was probably around 50, with a high of 60, that means without the curve everyone would have a C or less. No wonder he curves. Not recommended.
His presentation was very descriptive but hard to follow.
impossible to understand, mini quizes everyday so attendance is basically required, and a chore to listen to lecture. nice guy but hard to learn from, avoid if you can.
The bad: stutters, mumbles, clears his throat every 2 - 15 seconds, lots of "uh" and "um". The good: A sense of humor, very knowledgeable, laid back attitude. The class itself is very straightforward: quizzes every day (15%) and 3 tests (15%, 30%, 40%). Just read his lecture notes before class and you're set for the daily quiz.
Best prof of my college career! I took 302 and my capstone w/ him. Prof is so helpful and dedicated to students who make time to get help from him. Always willing to schedule appointments for you when you need clarification. He's also smart as heck and lectures very throughly. Hard but interesting classes that require hard work, folks!
Yes he stutters and yes he is a bit wacky...but he is a fantastic professor! He knows sociological law and theory in and out, he just conveys that knowledge different than other professors. I've taken three classes with him, gotten A's in all of them, and would recommend him to anyone.
Theory is a very easy class. Just show up every day, take the quizzes, go over the review sheet and notes online, and you are golden. The text is very unnecessary to read if you read his online material. Class can be rough at times but overall it's very easy for a 300-level class.
He is a very nice, smart, funny professor but it is very hard to pay attention or gain interest in the material. The classes drag on forever and each test is based on a TON of material. Tests are always curved, which is a plus. Just plan on being stressed out for the tests and final.
Very easy class if you do the study guides and practice tests. Thought this class would be hard because the grade is based on only 3 tests but it's not. Hated sitting through class, though. He's really hard to listen to. Mumbles a lot and doesn't cover whole lot in class because he talks so slowly.
inverarti is totally misunderstood. yes, his explanations can be a bit fuzzy at times. but really most of the sociology majors just asked unbelievably stupid questions and then did not actually pay attention to his answers. he is extremely smart, insightful, witty, funny, and very helpful, flexible, and understanding. go jim.
He's an overall nice guy with good intentions but the class is impossible to stay awake through and his teaching is far from comprehensible. I'd avoid it if you can, the stutter and lip licking will get to you. On the bright side he grades on a huge curve so you wont be able to know your grade at all but your D will probably be a B or A.
His grading methods make no sense. His quiz questions are replete with typos and inconsistencies making it impossible to be graded fairly. He is boring beyond belief and clears his throat constantly. This guy should retire already.
Easily on the greatest professors I have ever had. He is misunderstood to a huge degree. His knowledge of the material he is teaching is unmatched, and his willingness to help those who seek a greater understanding was amazing. I had a class every quarter with Jim, because I knew that I would come out of it much more prepared. Amazing Professor.
Hard class made even harder by this prof. His classes are extremely boring and hard to follow due to the 45 seconds it takes for him to get out a sentence. He made several mistakes on grading throughout the quarter and his notes and study guides are full of errors making them hard to understand. Stay away from this prof! Worst I've ever had!
Wow. Brilliant guy, but he shouldn't be teaching. Lectures are hard to follow, TONS of grading mistakes - you can't even trust that the practice tests and study guides are correct. Avg class exam score = D. And my grade ended up being an A! I wanted to know more about this subject, but he didn't help much at all.
This class was easy as long as you read the court cases, studied from the practice test and study guides he posts. He is very helpful when you go into his office hours. People who are doing poorly in the class probably do not read from the book or going to class. He does grade on a curve and tends to make mistakes but he fixes them later.
Very smart and enthusiastic professor on this topic. But his presentation and organization of the material is horrible. The notes he gives are jumbled into a huge mess difficult to read, he is hard to understand in class, and the material is complicated making this class undesirable. Tests are tough (25%,35%,45%) and you are gonna work for them.
He's very passionate about what he teaches, and definitely knows what he's talking about. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, though he was often hard to understand and had a very weak grasp of technology other than Word Documents.
You definitely have to study for his class but if you read the book, the tests are fairly easy. He gives you practice tests before each exam and at least half the questions are on the test. He's hard to understand and somewhat unclear in lecture but I wouldn't discourage taking his class.
Out of all the teachers I've had while going to college this one has to be the worst. He gives terrible feedback on papers, and has a gruff approach to struggling students. Avoid this teacher at all costs, his lectures are boring and he is a terrible instructor and could care less what is going on in your life.
I've had this professor twice because i am a Soc major and i have promised myself that i will never take him again. Out of all the professors in the Soc. department he is probably the most qualified but he is by far the worst at teaching the material. Unless you want an extremely stressful quarter dont take a class with him.
He is very knowledgeable, but lectures are early in the morning and hard to stay awake to. He would have to explain his notes in class to connect to the course. Towards the end was also stressful because the different topics did not relate. The final exam was the worst because it was in a different format than the previous tests.
I definitely agree that he is misunderstood by his students. A lot of the students in my class didn't give him enough credit. He's a smart guy and I did have to clarify many things with him but he is definitely willing to do so. Easy class if you attend most of the lectures and do the study guides.
While I am sure he is a brilliant man, he is the worst professor I have ever had at WWU. He assigns more reading than can be reasonably handled on time, poorly organized notes, and even though he gives the class most of the exam questions ahead of time, he has to curve the exam scores so that everyone isn't failing the class. A chore and a bore.
Sometimes his lectures are interesting, but most of the time I struggled to stay awake. The class average for the quizzes was 40%. He curved the hell out of the exams (for one, anyone who got a 50% or higher got an A). I didn't have motivation to go to class. He seems very smart but can't articulate anything and is easily confused.
He is a brilliant, kind man - but teaching isn't his strong suite. His class notes are confusing & unclear, making his tests seems especially hard. However, he curves his scores so it's not hard to pass. Many students get irritated with him, but he really does try his best & wants the best for his students. Also, there's a quiz almost every class.
This class was ridiculous. His lectures are long, messy, and unclear. He is incredibly hard to understand and prone to rambling off. Exams and quizzes don't match up with what he discusses in class. Some students gets A's, others get D's for the same level of work/similar answers. Avoid Inverarity at all costs if you'd like a decent GPA.
The worst professor I have ever had. Very nice man who obviously knows the material well, but some people should not be teachers. He is one of those people. Doesn't know how to use canvas, awful lectures, extremely unorganized. If you want to do well in his class you have to do the readings and teach yourself because he's not going to.
I had him years ago and he made a real difference in my life. I am now a civil rights lawyer and have used much of what I learned from him on nationally recognized cases.
