The easiest macro class you can get.

He is a very good teacher, has his own book to show for it, Funny stories too
He is an excellent teacher! He really makes the class very interesting!
Conveys concepts clearly with good examples, excellent teachet
Very good teacher, actually one of the best i've ever had, very funny too.
syllabus is useless, go to every class or you'll get screwed
Very good teacher! Very funny! I loved him!
Very helpful! Very good teacher! Very fun!
I love Jimmy's pizza shack
Great Professor. Lectures are very interesting and extremely clear.
Great guy, extremely funny, lectures were interesting, class was simple if you paid attention and took notes from the overhead.

Hilarious prof!!! Very knowledgeable on the subject so he has many clear and interesting examples to add to lectures.
The class was really easy, and he used good and funny examples.
If you don't feel like learning anything just go to the library and get a copy of the exam (which will be the same one you take). Dr. Kenkel is the master of not promoting academic integrity.
didn't miss a question on midterm or final. do and know hw's and you can't do bad. don't need to go to class, its right out of the book
Kenkel is very entertaining and makes time fly by! I found him to be very helpful and makes excellent use of examples!!
fairly easy, just do the homework
The book and lecture are very self-explanatory!
he makes the class fun...exams aren't easy, but homework is nearly half your grade, so it evens out...take him, he'll make you laugh
The guy has a lot of experience in statistics. He wrote the textbook which we used, and most of the real-world examples were newspaper clippings of stories with some affiliation to him. The guy is statistical gold. Take him if you have the chance.
Very straightforward and clear... I had him for STAT 1000 and ECON 0110 and did well in both. He's a good professor, just do the homeworks each week, which aren't too tough, and you'll do good on the tests.
Homework is soo hard because his examples have nothing to do with the homework..even though he wrote the book! Tests are really easy though..do the practice tests!
great prof
Class was so easy. Homework was the hardest part, but tests were almost identical to practice tests and were open book/notes. He also uses alot of real world examples and is obviously very knowledgeable, he wrote the book after all...
Tries to make it interesting even if its not really. Midterm was sorta hard, but as long as you do all the homeworks (which btw don't change ea.semester) you'll be fine, just try to get a copy of the old tests if u can
Best professor i've ever had!
I suck at math. Cool guy. Class was entertaining.
I took his class just because I heard he was easy, which is true, but I actually ended up liking it. I highly recomend!
The class is a piece of cake! He is one of those profs that you love b/c the class is easy and then you realize you actually did learn. Definately take macro w/ him
BEER AND PIZZA!Tests are identical between semesters, get a friend that has the notes and tests. Gives great examples.A litte too biased, but if you want to know about Keynesian economics, then you're good to go.
I love Kenkel! He is such a great and funny professor!!!!! I love that class everyday I go to it! You really don't have to pay attention in class to understand,
this class is great. im doin fine n never got the textbook. just go to the lectures n take notes on his slides. also do the hw questions, the test questions/choices r taken right from them. do the recitations if ya like, i havent n im aight.
Yeah, I agree with the rest. Kenkel is a good guy. Just do the reading and the homeworks and you'll do fine. His test questions are a bit tricky but after a few tries you'll get the hang of it.
Very quirky guy, said lots of odd things, like how the 2nd button is the elevator on the calculator and would then talk of the "second floor" and stuff. I hate Stats, and he didn't make me not hate it.
Learned a lot. He definitly taught me a lot of stuff I've always wondered. I never opened the text and got an A. Study the notes, that's all you need. And go to class, it's enjoyable.
Hes the bomb... i love his beer and pizza references...
Knows what hes talking about!

he is definitely really dry but not a bad prof. it seemed like he repeated the same topics multiple times throughout the semester so i stopped going to class but still got an easy A. definitely find someone with old tests
This guy was hilerious!! I took two classes from him because he held my attention so well.
decent professor, knows what hes talking about and relates it to you in terms of beer and pizza, which made me hungry. anyway, take him for econ so you dont have to deal with any grad student assoc. professors who plan to change the world with their intro classes.
never feel "safe" like you know the material, because you probably wont. find someone with old tests, and even then get a tutor
All this guy talks about is Proctor and Gamble, and beer and pizza. But he definately knows what he is talking about. He is clear and easy. I definately recommend taking this class.

Relates his material to useful examples in just about every class. The classes are a little repetative but what can you do with a Intro to Macro class. Doesnt make you go to recitation if you don't want to. Not enough grades though, bomb once and you're out.
Very experienced in field.
Hard to approach

i had this guy for econ too, and he is the man. possibly the smartest guy at this university, and im not exaggerating. wrote the textbook and has great knowledge of the subject. little quirky, but tests are open book. cant say enough good stuff about this guy.
I love Jim Kenkel!! I had him last semester for Econ and I must say that I like him even more as teacher this semester. All the tests are open notes and book, and the homeworks are all easy. Take his class for Stats, you are guarenteed to do well.
his lectures arent terrible, but they arent necessary. all lecture notes are online. tests are mostly math. he does a good job explaining concepts
cool guy, shakes a lot
Dry yet humorous lectures. Not much work involved. Hopefully it has changed by now, but he has a problem with giving the same tests year after year so people will often write down all the answers and finish their final in 5 minutes just filling in bubbles, but for-shame if you can't EARN the A with him.
Newsflash, he changed his tests, and yes it has become more difficult, with a book that is not helpful and recitations even less helpful. The grading scale is completely out in left field and the subject matter not really that difficult, the problem is that your grade is based upon 160 multiple choice questions.
You don't need to go to class, ever, just keep up with the notes online. The grading scale is a little crazy, but it's not bad. The tests are easy, even if you DON'T have copies of old ones. A lot of basic, basic math. Not hard at all.
All he talks about is beer and pizza, and proctor gamble stock. Don't really have to go to class or recitation. Recitation is usually some foreign person that you cannot understand. To do good just study the notes online or get old tests.
Very unapproachable, can be confusing, tests are very hard. Won't answer emails, but answers a few in class.
This guy is the man. You don't need to go to lecture but you should anyway because he's hilarious. Don't waste your time and money buying the book, you won't need to spend a minute outside of lecture for this class. Probably one of the easiest classes you can take but you will actually learn things.
this guy is awesome. all he talks about is beer, pizza, and jimbo's pizza shop. easy to understand. u don't really need to go to class cause he puts all the notes online. tests aren't that hard but they are big.ONLY 3 EXAMS. 250, 250, and 750 points.
It's the Intro to Macro class., 110??You need to know your stuff, but if you do, you'll be fine. Read the book, go to class, and study to notes that he posts online. Make sure you do the True/False questions that he gives you to study. It may look intimidating b/c there are like 500 of them for the semester, but just do them.2 exams, 1 final,is all
Ask anyone and they'll tell you to take Kenkel's class for macro!!
Found very approachable, always open to answer any questions. Uses lots of examples for clarity(very very repetitive sometimes, but it helps) Funny guy and doesnt put you to sleep in class. If not impressed yet, his exams and finals are all open book which makes getting a good grade, near impossible
Lectures weren't very exciting and totally comprised of notes which are posted online. Also not very clear in the material covered.
Go to class and pay attention and it's easy. Recitation helped, too. Didn't touch the book all semester. He actually told us before the first test that all the material was from the lecture. The final was harder than the other tests. And your grade is based on 1000 points from two 250 pt tests and a 500 pt final. No homework or quizzes.
Kenkel doesn't really try to be funny, but I cracked up every lecture. The book is completely useless. Just go to all the lectures. Do the practice tests, and if you know someone who already took the course, try to get copies of old tests. The multiple choice can be tricky and the final is confusing, but he will curve to make it fair.
Kenkel is the man. His lectures are boring, but he posts all of the notes online, gives you practice exams which are identical to the actual ones, and gives you true and false homework assignments. It's an easy class, he also uses the same exams so find someone who had him before and get the tests. The textbook isn't necessary for macro classes.
He makes statistics so beyond easy to understand. He wrote the book so that makes life much easier. All tests are open note and open book-- Don't rely on that (still study and go to class), but it's always nice to have a professor who realizes that in the real world you're going to be able to use outside materials. Would highly recommend Kenkel.
Don't bother going to class. Just study the notes he gives you online. The tests are somewhat difficult, but the math is easy. You don't have to lift a finger, and you can easily get a B.
Don't buy the book. Go to class and use his lecture notes as your book. Do the practice homeworks and pratice tests. Recitations aren't really necessary but very helpful. A decent amount of work shall get you an A!
Lectures were pointless, all of the notes were online and he just read them everyday. Math questions on tests were easy, but he'd put random questions on that you thought you'd never need to know. Don't bother emailing him, it takes weeks for him to reply.

seemingly cool and funny at first, tests are hard. TERRIBLE class
Don't buy the book - it's expensive and you'll open it once. Don't bother going to class, either. All the notes are posted on CourseWeb. The day before each exam, just make a sheet of equations and study it. The tests are 90% math calculations with a few random general questions from the content of the class.
he changed his tests this year so dont count on that. all notes are online..going to help COULD help but probably wont. lame-typical econ
If you do every problem on the homework and the practice tests, you'll probably get an A or B in the class. He cracks me up when he gets all excited from explaining his real-life experiences in statistics. Very vocal. Sometimes I wonder if he's a bit crazy.
Kenkel is the man. I cracked up anytime he opened his mouth. 3 tests. 2 midterms were easy but the final was suprisingly hard(er). All exams are on just the notes (no need to get the book) and the notes are posted online. Find someone with past exams as he reuses questions. I'd recommend him. He's a funny guy.
not bad professor. if u dont like going to class i would take him, but he did ask a question that he talked about one time in class. the only problem with him is that he gives 2 tests and a final and u can only get like 2 questions wrong to get an A. not cool.
Funny guy. Never seemed like he was trying to be funny or anything, but always managed to crack me up once a class. Easy tests, didn't read the book, didn't study, got B's. If you went to class more than I did I'm sure you'd get an A. Tough to get a hold of if for some reason you had a question, although I can't imagine what question you'd have
Macroecon: Don't bother buying the book, i got an A without it. As a professor, he is no doubt the man! He knows his stuff and manages to be highly entertaining while teaching. Read the notes, and go to class so you can relate everything involving macro to beer, pizza, little red wagons, and crazies with shotguns. Highly Recommended.
Hilarious class to be in. You never use the book and all the outlines for the course are online, so its easy to follow along in class.. plus he doesn't require you to go to recitations.
Take Stat with Kenkel. He is the man. Teaches through examples, so you know how to do every problem that he would ever throw at you on a test. He is hilarious, and makes many comments that leave you thinking "Wow did he just say that?" I'd rather go to class and laugh than sit through a boring lecture.
Kenkel is awesome. He is the only macro teacher you should take. Get the tests from people who have taken the class, put the info in your calculator and you'll get an A. He's hilarious too
Kenkel was rather hard, and never helped. His textbook is useless so i'll advise to not get it. Grade system is dumb. hated his class. But if u go to recitation you should pass.
This guy is hilarious. He never cracks a smile while he's saying the funniest****. The class is incredibly easy and you might actually learn a couple things. Don't bother buying the book.
Amazing class, mostly because if you are good about it, most of the tests are flying around somewhere. Lecture can be very dry and boring, but just listening to the man makes it all worth it. He loves Jimbo's pizza shop and red wagons. Get used to it. Highly recommended. Almost impossible not to do well
Good class..he repeats himself alot so you automatically learn the info without studying if you attend classes. He is funny, and is full of info. Overall, enjoyed the class. DO NOT buy the book. Study before the exams and you will get a decent grade. Final isnt too bad at all. Easier than the two midterm exams.
this class is tricky.. i never went to recitation and barely went to class, studied on my own the day before the exam (got old tests coz he reuses a good bit of questions) and got an a, but if you screw up a midterm or final, you're screwed bc theres only 2 midterms and 1 final as the grade. very basic and he posts idiot-proof lectures online
I learned a lot of interesting material just by attending lecture. The textbook and recitation are not necessary to be successful in Prof. Kenkel's class - just be sure to show up and listen - lectures are clear, thorough, and always amusing.
worst professor i have ever had. ever.
Never went to class or recitation...except when the homework was due...he sends out emails for when everything is due...do the practice tests he posts on courseweb...many of the questions are very similar to the tests...the tests are really easy...
First off, don't buy the book. You won't need it for the class even though it says retired. As for Kenkel, a very good professors. He taught me a good macroeconomics foundation for future classes.
Easiest college class I ever took. This guy is always in a good mood and makes it nearly impossible to fail. all tests are open book so buying the book would be a good idea.
3 tests is your grade. practice tests he gives are almost identical. tests are half easy math and half notes from lecture. one of the easier A's at Pitt
Don't worry about buying the book, you can just go to the library and print out all his notes. The exams were cake as long as you put in a little time studying. He also allows you to make up exams if you 'accidentally' sleep in :S
easiest class ever...love this dude...impossible to fail...attended class only on the days homework is due and have a 98% average...open book/open note tests...homework is easy...easy easy easy
kenkel is the man, dude is hilarious....class isnt too bad, dont buy the book though just go along with his slides and go over the practice hw's he posts before each test bc his theory questions are straight out of them
Don't buy the textbook. Lecture notes are very straightforward. Midterm exams are pretty easy if you study but final was harder. never went to lecture just study and you'll be okay.
kenkels the man. not a lot of ppl attended lectures bc he posts his notes online beforehand, but he was crystal clear in his explanations. tests were cake, a few problems exactly from the practice tests. easy course with a bit of studying.
final grade 50% based on the final. so some ppl find this class easy, some find it hard.
Great economics class. Kenkel is a great instructor and is very knowledgable. You don't need to read the book. Everything is in the notes. Never attended a recitation, though I hear they are helpful. Just listen in lecture and do the practice hw and practice tests.
Kenkel is awesome. He is somewhat funny in his classes, all his notes are online, and if you do his practice tests, the actual tests are cake. I did not go to one recitation, nor did I buy the book. I missed one question all semester. Definitely recommend.
The answers to every test can always be found in the practice tests and homeworks; use those to study if nothing else. As for lecture he uses real-world examples but can get repetitive. The book ends up not being very useful. The recitations are helpful to remediate on a topic but not much more.
Clear guy, easy class. DO NOT buy the textbook, I didn't look at it once. I went to the classes, but there's really no need if you study hard for the exams.
class involves minimal time. most students come only on test days and still get As. The book is useless and kenkels notes make lecture and recitation superfluous. all classes should be like this.
Taking Kenkels class was a great idea. Its an easy A if you put some thought into it. Lectures and recitations are helpful, but not mandatory. Notes are all online. I actually remember a lot of stuff from macro, and Kenkel has a lot to do with that. If you take his class and manage to stay awake and pay a bit of attention, you'll be golden.
by far the worst prof I have had at pitt. no one goes to his classes because they are pointless and he doesn't teach anything. Honestly nowadays, he seems more consumed with stopping cheating which is why people "used" to call this an easy a. Just don't pick him as your teacher.
I entirely agree with the last student. All this guy does is read his lecture notes, which you can do by yourself. Dont buy the text book. His final is insanely hard. Get MALLOY for Macro, all Kenkel worries about is catching people cheating. And for the peopel who said this class is a breeze... its because they've taken macro in high school before
Good introduction to economics. Also very easy. Final was not hard at all. All you have to do is study a bit.
It was a relatively challenging class and I would take Malloy if I could go back. Didn't have to go to class or buy the book as long as you read lectures and could do the math.
Oh Jimbo. I never attended class and taught myself everything from his notes. Very straightforward and you can teach yourself everything. But there is a lot of material to learn for test, no extra credit. Great man but I would take Malloy if I had the chance.
Such an easy A (and 4 credits too!). Rarely went to class, did the homeworks and attended only to turn them in. Exams are open note, open book so even if I didn't know how to do something I could easily look it up in the time allotted. Definitely invest in a TI-89, it does the work for you. He's an amusing lecturer, but 9:30am killed it for me.
Kenks was unintentionally hilarious due to his wacky voice and hand motions. His lectures were very boring and his notes were useful, but frustrating because he makes them at least 25 pages long for each lecture due to excessive font size and page breaks. Tests are pretty difficult, but not impossible. Went to rec. twice then gave up, useless
I went to every class and every recitation, studied for the tests, but still got a D. Each test question is 20 points, he doesn't give partial credit for anything. I would not recommend him.
Class isn't too difficult but it's def not an easy A. I'm getting a B- and i study about 10 hours for each exam. I teach everything myself and never attend class.
He teaches you nothing but tests you on everything. His lectures are pointless he usually just spends the whole time rambeling on nothing at all. His exams have few questions and uses tricks to try and make students mess up and tests on stuff that was never even taught. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
He's probably interesting if you can pay attention. I learned the necessities during recitations with Samah (she teaches you 5 lectures worth of stuff in 1 hour. get her if you can. don't even go to lecture) DO NOT buy the text. his notes are ok. Look up anything you don't understand online. He likes to use Jimbo's Pizza as an example a lot....
Teaches on a very shallow level, but tests you on a deeper level than anything taught. very tricky wording, no amount of studying will get you a better grade, your only chance is if you have an economics background beforehand. worst prof of the semester
First of all, do not buy the text. what's best about this class is you don't have to go. Attending the class will not help your grade since it's impossible to pay attention. The exams are hard because you have to take it a step further and apply it so even if it was open notes, you wouldn't do ant better. I'm getting a B- studying 15+ hours / exam
This guy barely teaches, I and everyone I know had to teach themselves everything on the tests. Oh yeah, your grade is based on 3 tests only, so don't screw up. The material isn't hard, but he has you study 90000 topics from his 50+ page note packets for a test with only 25 questions on it, and 60 for the final (half your grade). DO NOT take him.
I wouldn't take another class with him. Tests aren't too bad, but very easy to make costly mistakes. Lots of homework points, but without the help of the TA they would have been difficult.
His midterms were very easy. I actually overstudied those two midterms that I only missed 5 questions total. Then there came the final exam..which was WAYYYYYY harder than midterm. I bombed it and my grade got lowered to B- from A. No attendance mandatory. Just study on your own. His class is okay I guess.
The class is not hard. kenkel does a good job teaching the basics, but a lot of studying for exams is necessary. I would recommend him if you have access to his previous semesters tests (i did, made the first two tests cake). I had an A and then the final, which is very hard, lowered me to a B+. I would recommend him
Rubbish, uncomfortable example
terrible teacher. terrible class. period. does nothing during class but tell stories & read his 50+ pg notes then gives tests worth 250 points on 1000 topics w only 25 ?s, most of which u have to work out problems u never learned how to do. Practice hw & test are useless, attending class is pointless & attending recitation is a joke. DO NOT TAKE!!
His class was more centered around Equations than ideas. I'm not a math person, so it was really difficult for me. He's also not the easiest person to communicate with...I emailed him several times and he never answered. I would recommend taking the other professor for this class if you can.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Class is pointless and I just read the notes and did okay but good luck! the final is worth 50% of the grade and their are only two other tests each worth 25% with 25 questions so 1 question wrong is one percentage point off your final grade. BUT HE DOES GET TESTS GRADED WITHIN 1 Day
He knows what he is teaching about...but does a poor job getting it across. Exams are equation-based, yet he doesn't go over many equations in class. Did poorly on 2 midterms, studied for weeks to get my grade up in final, only to get an 88 on it. Don't go in expecting not to study like crazy and get a good grade. This class needs time and effort.
dont buy the textbook didnt pick it up once. tests are based purely off notes. i went to class but it is not necessary at all. kenkel reads off the slides and doesnt explain anything. just study the notes and make sure you know how to do the math and some facts for tests
Kenkel is great for STAT 1000. It is fairly easy to make a mistake on his exams, but they are open book/note. 20% of the grade is homework so that helps. I never took a stat class before so I always went to class and got an A. Most likely could get away without going. Definitely recommend Kenkel
does not know his material. the class is very difficult to keep up to pace with. exams are very hard. good luck, you'll need it.
His exams are tricky and much harder than necessary. The first exam is on so much material and his lecture notes are very lengthy. Tries to be funny. Sometimes succeeds. He covers so much material that it is hard to remember it all. start studying early
His tests are extremely hard and purely math based which is difficult because he lectures about a million topics. There are only 3 tests so you better do well. Class is huge lecture and not mandatory, impossible to pay attention. I had an economics background and still had trouble. I'd recommend another teacher
Tests are difficult and not like the material you see in class. Studied hard but got tricked many times. Avoid.
Kenkel is boring in lecture but the notes he provides are very clear and straightforward. Do the practice homework, practice tests, and know your equations and the class is not hard at all.
Kenkel moves fast in lecture but is very thorough and gives very useful examples. He's actually rather funny as well. Exams aren't too bad, but require a lot of studying. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. Such a waste of money, just make sure you follow along with his notes and study from those and you will be fine. Practice homework and tests also help a ton.
He is a horrid teacher. Reads his notes ver batum to a large lecture hall. Half of the students skip, sleep during class, or get on twitter or FB because he is so boring. Exams are tricky and based on equations. My class avg on last test was D. Tried to make an appointment to see him twice, declined both times. If that isn't useless idk what is.
Keys to success a)Dont touch the book b)Study previous yrs verions of exams(same types of questions, repeats some) c) Study his notes verbatim(and yes everything and verbatim THIS IS ALL HIS TEST IS DERIVED FROM) d) practice calculations and repeatedly using equations. This is an easy class if you know how to go at it, kids who dont do well dont.
Most boring teacher I have ever had. No chances to get a good grade if you do poorly on one of his 3 tests. Exams are tricky and not at all like his online practice exams. Avoid
Easiest class ever. Just read the notes he posts online. No need to go to class.
kenkel's the man. he has been teaching intro to macro for so long and can explain ideas very thoroughly and precisely with great use of examples. his tests are incredibly easy as long as you read the notes and do previous years' tests. even though he is pretty easy i learned a lot from him. he's also hilarious.
Kenkel is the BOMB. a bit scary at first, but the class was the easiest A ever. Don't go to class, just do the homework and work through it before tests.
Kenkel is very clear in explaining concepts, I learned a lot. I advise going to lectures because he will emphasize important concepts. Do not buy the textbook! Study by reviewing his notes, practice tests, and practice homework. There are only 3 tests so study hard! But seriously, practice tests and homework are the key to success.
Definitely reccommend going to lectures. This class covers a TON of material and you must keep up with it and make sure you understand. Tests are short 25 questions, but out of the huge amount of notes it's hard to tell what will be tested.
Boring lecture and class. Can barely understand the TAs. Or at least mine. Kenkel talks about Jimbos pizza a lot too. Tests are tricky too. He tries to say he does not mean to trick you too
Lecture notes are helpful but first test really caught me off guard. Really funny, but not the best teacher! Does not use the text book ever!
Good professor. Definitely knows his stuff. Grading system is a bit strange. There are only three tests so there isn't much room for error. Tests are harder versions of practice tests. Doesn't use the text book at all.
Professor Kenkel is a little quirky and likes to relive his glory days through stories of actually doing things with statistics besides teaching it to a bunch of bored college students. On the whole, though, his class is really easy--open-notes tests account for most of the grade and the rest are homeworks. I would definitely recommend him.
Hummm, never really went to classes....Just read his lecture notes and you will be fine
The key to this class is to READ HIS LECTURE SLIDES! Before the test, make a list of all the formulas throughout because the tests are mostly math based. Know the concepts and know the formulas. If you do the practice tests on his website and know them well, you'll be fine! Start studying early though
He is a rather lazy teacher who does not provide you with ways to test your knowledge throughout the course. Highly recommend another teacher.
Only three tests for your semester grade. His lecture notes are literally all you need to look over. He is ok at explaining concepts in class but he can go off in strange directions with his stories. Attendance is not mandatory and it shows.
Very boring teacher, read notes before test. He hates the tunnel under the Allegheny. Doesn't use book AT ALL. Recitations are pointless too. Be prepared to hear about countless made up business's called "Jimbo's Pizza" etc. Would recommend if you are good at memorizing and simple math problems. Concepts are not difficult.
Very boring. Impossible to stay awake during lecture. Three exams total including final, not much room for error. First exam was about 2 months into the course and only 25 questions. No clear cut way to prepare for tests. Highly recommend a different professor.
This is a very easy course if you study for the exams. If you dont study though you will probably get a C. Kenkel is a boring professor, but the exams are easy if you read notes, study homework, and do practice test
You will learn more from reading the textbook than going to lectures. He is stuck in the past with all of the examples he talks about and they therefore provide only theoretical and no practical use to current Econ majors. Take him for an easy A.
Very easy class if you just read the notes and do the homeworks. Lectures are pretty boring but it's an intro class and that's the norm with a huge class. The tests have changed to include more questions so there is more room for error. Lots of true and false questions that can be practiced by doing the homework.
Lectures were detailed and I actually felt like I learned a lot about economics by taking the class. Grading system wasn't much to work with, 2 exams and a final. Changed the format of the exams a week before the first exam, instead of all multiple choice made about half of the exam questions true false and tried to trick you throughout the test.
Do NOT take this course if you will actually need statistics in your college career. But if you need an easy stat class, look no further. Every test was open-book, open-notes, and a super-easy A, but I still cannot solve the simplest stats problem without my text. Lectures are long rambles about gambling and heart medication.
I love Jimbo Kenkel. His hilarious anecdotes about Jimbo's Pizza and building a tunnel under the Allegheny kept me coming back for more. I got like a 64% on the first midterm got a 69% on the next one. The final is really easy compared to the midterms I got a 98% on it.He also bumped all of our grades up one letter grade. I love jimbo.
worst teacher ever. he definitely knows the material but has no clue how to actively and efficiently teach it. just stands in front of class boringly reading the power points. no homework and no quizzes which leaves no room for error. would definitely not recommend. he doesn't engage with the class in any way whats so ever. only teacher i hated.
Worst professor I've ever had. Too many topics are covered and there's only 3 grades in the course. Doesn't follow the book and his lectures are boring. The median on the first exam was 150 out of 240, which clearly says it all
smart man but terrible at teaching the material. The book is also vague at times. I strongly suggest taking someone else. I dropped the course, and the exam questions are hard.
kenkels lectures are disorganized and unclear sometimes but his tests are open note open book so if you go over the material a little before hand you can get a good grade. kind of a harsh grader on mandatory hw assignments
Easy class but a tough professor. Don't underestimate him because the exams ask very specific details about the lecture notes. Two exams and the final, no other grades so if you fail one exam it's tough to catch back up. He is a fantastic lecturer though. Follows his notes, adds stories, and explains concepts very clearly. Book isn't necessary.
Good teacher, class is boring- try to go to lecture though. Gives lots of stories/examples to help with material. Course material= very easy. midterms = very difficult.Don't underestimate him on the midterms.Practice tests=MUCH easier than actual midterms but still take them. Final= MUCH easier than the midterms (72/73 on MT's, then 95 on final.
This class seems extremely easy, until the first test. Basically, you need to memorize the lecture notes because there will be specific questions about them on the test. Also, make sure you know how to do every type of problem on the notes because you will be asked to do them on the test. Do the practice homework as you go through the course.
Don't know what everyone is complaining about. Literally never paid attention in lecture and did very well. Just do the practice homeworks (and UNDERSTAND THEM) and you'll be fine. Yes, the exams can be tricky, but just read carefully. Don't even open the textbook. Honestly, it isn't hard at all. Just study and do what he says and you'll be fine.
Stats has the reputation of being very easy and while not definitely not hard I didn't find this class to be the joke most make it. Exams were harder than you'd expect and very long, lots of problems so silly mistakes add up. Some questions were also a bit tricky. I still got an A and only crammed but there are definitely easier sect out there.
Awesome professor, very experienced and interesting. Although all notes are posted online from the beginning of the semester, class attendance is very helpful as Dr. Kenkel provides clear and important examples to make the material more understandable and applicable. I would definitely recommend this professor.
Not a fan...
Since there are only two midterms and a final that make up your grade, it is really important to be prepared for the tests. Do the practice homework and tests he provides early and often and make sure you actually understand the concepts. On the tests go slow and read carefully. If you know the information the tests aren't too difficult.
Kenkel was a good professor for macro. I never read the book, showed up for a good number of lectures, and studied the day before the test and pulled off an A. Material is basic, and he's interesting enough.
Kenkel was one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures/material are boring and not engaging. He is very hard to approach and his tests are very difficult. Since there are only 2 exams and a final, there is 0 room for error. You must work VERY hard in this class for a good grade. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Jimbo is the man. He uses real world examples so he was a way of keeping your attention the entire class. The homeworks are kind of hard but if you see the TA he's extremely helpful. Tests are kind of tricky but they're open note, book and homework. So if you go to every class you'll be good. Great Professor, definitely take!
Two tests and a final are the only grades so it is crucial that you prepare for them. Make sure to do the homework and practice tests as these questions are usually pretty similar to those asked on the tests. Prof. Kenkel does a great job giving examples (Jimbo's Pizza). When I had him there were no recitations but I heard this changed.
I've never had a more difficult professor. He was more concerned with tricking students on exams than actually teaching and passing students. Would not recommend, especially as this is meant to be an intro class.
Class was a waste of time. He was useless, his tests were deliberately confusing. An intro class should not be like this one. You don't need to go to your recitation. Study his practice tests and homeworks and sneak a notecard with formulas into the test and you'll be fine. Class was overcrowded but you only really need to go for the tests.
really nice guy, but gets off track a lot in lecture so its not necessary to go. lets you use your notes and textbook for every exam including the final. homework is a large part of your final grade. overall a super easy stat class
So easy. The class was pretty much a joke. Just do the homework and be sure to understand them. Go to class and take organized notes. Generally, the harder questions on the exam come directly from examples in class.
Jimbo is a great guy. Course material is easy, gives both practice homework and tests prior to exams. Lecture slides put online, you really don't need the book at all. The final is long but like all the tests, as long as you study for them you'll do well.
Difficult class but not as difficult as many make it out to be. If you read the lecture notes, go to class, and do the practice homework, you should be fine on the exams. The material itself isn't hard, but the tests can be tricky. The book isn't really necessary. I read it for the first exam and found that it didn't help at all on the test.
Attendance to lecture and recitation not mandatory or necessarily helpful. Material is not overly difficult, but exams can be tricky. Know the notes inside and out, and do the practice homework, and you should be ok for the exams. Read the exam questions carefully.
My favorite professor at Pitt so far, and I'm a rising senior. Very straight to the point and easy to understand. Must attend lectures, book is not needed. Be careful of wording on tests, go over practice material online/ lecture notes and that should do the trick.
The material isn't hard, but he makes the tests pretty tricky. Read carefully and be prepared for a lot of math questions.
All you will learn about is Jimbo's Pizza and be bored out of your mind. He only has a midterm and a final and his study guide is about 1000 true false questions. Would never take him again and wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Also, going to him outside of class for help is a complete waste and his TA's don't speak any english.
You better like to do all your learning by yourself because that is what will happen if you take this course. He is not helpful and condescending. Take any other professor if you have the option.
The textbook is not needed. The notes that he gives on course web is all you need to get an A in his class. He gives a ton of practice problems so tests shouldn't be an issue. His grading system is very simple, he has two mid-terms and a final.
Don't take him
Dr. Kenkel teaches at an easy-to-follow pace, and he give real-world examples to back up the course material -- it's always interesting to see real-world applications in lecture. I would definitely recommend him for statistics; he's clear, fair, and easy to follow.
He is a nice guy, however his lectures are dry and long. If you read his notes online carefully and do the practice tests you will do well. Put in the effort and you will receive the grade you want. Recitation not mandatory, neither is class, as long as you keep up with reading. The final was HARD and long. Don't waste your money on the textbook.
Loved Kenkel! The lectures were super clear. If you just followed along with what he was saying, the material was really easy. However, there are only three grades (two midterms and a final). I studied a ridiculous amount and it paid off. You definitely don't need to get a book, just review his notes, practice homeworks, and practice tests.
If you want to do well in the class you need to teach yourself everything. There's only two midterms and the final exam. The final exam was very tough and long. Would not take again.
2 midterms and a final. Its basically all memorization, he will have test questions even on very minute details. If you spend a lot of time reading over his note packets before the tests and do the practice homework, you will be fine.
OMG i had kenkel previously and he's just so bad. can't teach for life
Taking Kenkel was like pulling teeth. Couldn't get much help from the TAs or prof. His lectures will put you to sleep (esp as they're morning classes) and the book he assigns is a text that he wrote in 1996 and is *awful* compared to the text the rest of the dept uses. I passed only by dragging down my other courses. Avoid if you can.
Tests consist of all trick questions, unlike practice homeworktests. Studying all the material doesn't even help unless you are good at taking long, tricky tests. And you only have 3 grades. He is a good teacher, but unreasonably harsh on tests and grading. He doesn't even curve grades. Don't take him for intro to macroeconomics.
Lectures were often off topic and really boring, talked a lot about theory w little examples, and the exams were extremely difficult to even finish on time. Would not recommend if you're trying to get an A.
By far the WORST professor I have ever had. He seems like a great guy, but his exams are nothing but tricks. Being an engineering junior I thought this would be an easy A. Way to hard for an intro class. Would never recommend him or the class.
One of my favorite professors. Some people complain about him but they are also the ones that never show up. If you show up the tests are pretty clear cut. Lectures may be a little boring but the tests aren't hard. With just a little work you should be able to get an A. He's a really nice guy as well.
Guess it depends on how you learn, but I was not able to stay awake in this class. His exams were tricky and not straight forward. They tested the most specific details like what the inflation rate of 1930 was. There is so much material for each test and he only offers three exams. If there is another, better option I would try to avoid him.
Only 3 tests all semester and the final test is worth 52% of your grade.
Very straight forward intro to econ class. It is an easy A if you study your butt off for a few days before the exams. You dont need the textbook but should know the lectures pretty much word for word. Definitely do not need to go to class as notes are online... I went to maybe 4 classes and got an A.
He is very clear about the material during lectures and gives plenty of funny examples. He puts his notes online which contain all the info. Showing up to class isn't necessary, but a few test questions may come from lecture. Many test questions are truefalse but aren't tricky. He is also clear about what is on each exam. I recommend taking him.
Dr. Kenkel has been around the block - the multitude of real-life examples he provides throughout each section provide you with a solid foundation for Macroeconomics. As a Finance major, I will definitely use this information later down the road. Tests are only difficult if you don't study his notes. Do practice tests, read notes get an A.
I took intro to microecon for my elective as an engineering student. I went to class, paid attention, and studied the notespractice homeworks online and got an easy A. His tests are not tricky by any means. His lectures were pretty entertaining, I would recommend him. People who failed didn't go to class or paid no attention.
Kenkel's test are extremely hard. You have to know every last detail of the material, as the tests are mostly truefalse. The lectures are for the most part boring.
He is a very interesting man and the class is not very difficult, and no homework
"Jimbo" is the man. He has lots of real life examples and throws stats out left and right, but he does a good job of explaining them. He is very experienced in his field. There are only 3 tests, so as long as you do what he says for studying you will get an A! He gives clear instructions for this as well.
He often rants about things that are unrelated and not helpful. Beware of "Jimbo's Pizza"
Kenkel does what he can with a boring curriculum, but he's somewhat monotoned in the way he lectures. Often times, he heads off in a nonsensical direction, which is confusing. His exams are difficult and he leaves little room for makeups.
Very average professor. His tests are somewhat tricky, but not unreasonable. Never went to lecture and was still able to get an A. Do the practice homework, ALL OF IT, and you should be fine. Finding someone that has the exams from previous years will help you a lot, they are practically the same.
Jim was a good professor. Lectures were dry and the tests were usually on specific details. If you do the practice homework and learn the math problems you'll be fine.
Kenkel's class was very straight forward. 2 midterms and a final. The final is 52% of your grade. Although that seems terrifying at first, it's really not bad. Memorize the notes and do the practice homework and tests and you should be fine. I stopped paying attention in class halfway through and still got an A.
This class is pretty easy to get a B in as long as you use the sample exams to study that are given out by your TA. Also, it's helpful to know the vocab of the course. You don't need to attend every lecture to pass. Kenkel is pretty straightforward and cool.
A lot of people would disagree, but I learned a TON in his lectures (stuff that's actually applicable to real life, like taxes). I thought he was a great lecturer, but his tests were tough. While they're all multiple choice, there aren't a ton of problems, and there's a lot of tricky ones. So each MC problem has a lot of weight on your grade.
Dr. Kenkel is a very good professor. He makes economics really easy and I don't think I have ever had a professor explain things as well as he does. The exams are easy and the class overall requires minimal work.
Kenkel is a great professor. He's very knowledgable, and his lectures are genuinely engaging. He has an emphatic style when explaining topics, and he provides good examples. Go to lecture. You'll end up with a great understanding of macro. Tests aren't too bad, just study the notes and formulas. The true/false problems can be tricky. Awesome class!
GOD AMONG MEN. Took for Econ 0110 and Stat 1000. Do the homework and you'll do well.
Kenkel is way better than his rating on this website. I have him for Econ 0110 right now (and hopefully many more classes in the future). He's approachable, gives practice problems that are very close to the exams, and is honestly just a pretty genuine guy. MIDDLE DIFFICULTY. Some studying is needed you won't need to go crazy.
Love me some Jimbo. He bases his class off his own lecture notes that you can use to study. Also posts practice homeworks and tests for studying. Test is very manageable if you study. He keeps the lectures very engaging with his funny mannerisms and real world examples. This is the guy to go for if you need to take Macro. Makes a boring class quick
Dr. Kenkel is a cute old man who is very knowledgable in his field. If you can force yourself to pay attention in his lectures, he's actually a very funny guy! His tests are only 30 MC questions and they're a breeze. If you pay attention in lecture you'll only have to study the night or 2 before the exam. 2 exams and a final, I'd take him again!
Study his notes & you're golden. Tests are super similar to practice tests and recitation 100% helps.
Professor Kenkel is a solid professor. Relatively easy class if you put the time in before the test. 3 tests make up 95% of your grade, so it's very straightforward, but you better perform on those if you want to get a good grade. I wasn't able to put too much time into his class and I still managed a B. Definitely doable, textbook not needed.
Going to lecture wasn't necessary, Kenkel provides students with notes. Reading the book helps, but isn't required. Two 30-question midterms (60%) a 70 question final (35%) and recitation attendance (5%). Exams aren't terribly difficult, but they are extremely heavily weighted. STUDY HARD AND YOU WILL BE FINE. GO TO YOUR TA FOR HELP.
Jimbo is a statistical gem. He is from the technological dark ages, so he gets really excited about using the calculator. Lecture is very simple and spends a long time to explain simple concepts. Tests were all short answer with much partial credit. I got a 100% on every test. I would recommend Kenkel if you want an easy A and can learn yourself.
Not my favorite professor at pitt but I had to take STAT 1000. Kenkel is a little weird but goes through a lot of interesting examples. You have to be in class to do well in this class. He literally writes everything you need to know on the board. Good if you have to take this class but I would not sugest taking him if you dont have to.
As long as you read the notes or pay attention in class you'll be fine for the tests, which are almost the only grades that you'll have in the class. Nice guy. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK.
Not much different style from his econ class. Straight forward grading in terms of tests and homework. Lectures can be boring but mostly because of the subject. He is a funny guy.
Jimbo is the best. Take him if hes available. Tests are so easy and if you can get your hands on a previous exam, they're nearly exactly the same. Attendance isnt required so you dont have to go as long as you read the book. He's by far the funniest professor I've had in college
He's the greatest! Lectures are optional and if you skip some, you'll still be fine! He uses los of real world examples to make the economics easy to understand. He cracks a lot of jokes and is totally hilarious. Tests are exactly the same as the practice exams and uses questions from the optional homework. Great class!
Sometimes it was hard to focus in lecture. Seems to have good choice in TAs though, or at least with mine, who is super amazing and the real reason I passed the class. The class was straightforward. I just wish the exam questions weren't worth so much (1 MC question 10 points).
Don't buy the textbook! All the information you need are on the notes he posts on Courseweb. Never went to class, you just need to study his notes thoroughly to pass with an A. Lectures were boring but he's an awesome guy. I recommend!
amazing!!! best professor ever, makes the material easy to understand and is hysterical! he doesn't like when you ask questions though but other than that fantastic man!
scary-- dont ask him questions. tests are hard and can be very specific. not fantastic but not terrible. 3/10 would reccomend
Adorable and quirky guy. Super smart and the tests are literally a photocopy of the practice problems he gives you. Do those over and over again and you'll memorize the entire test. People who failed the tests just didn't bother to do the practice problems
I genuinely don't understand how people can give Kenkel such a good rating. The dude doesn't care at all if you pass his class and is beyond boring. 2 cumulative midterms and a cumulative final. Says in the syllabus that you should read a couple hours per day reading the book. Like anyone has time for that.
Jimbo is the man. His examples are helpful and his notes replace the book. The exams are exactly like the practice exams he gives. Put any effort in, and you will do well
Tests are pretty easy - he posts his lecture notes and practice tests that give you all the material you need to do well. Some of his lectures were boring, others were pretty interesting & occasionally funny. Don't bother buying the textbook
Jimbo only gives three tests and points for attendance recitation. If you're not a strong test taker, avoid him. Not necessary to go to class. Read his notes online, and you'll be fine. He regurgitates his notes during class.
You have to dig through so many lecture notes if you want to do well on the exams. I took this thinking it was an easy A, it was not at all. This is not a hard class, but it is so time consuming and going to lecture becomes such a nag. More than anything, he is a TERRIBLE lecturer and you will fall asleep. His tests are tricky as well so know that.
Had Jimbo for both Econ 110 and Stat 1000. He was a much better professor in econ than he was in statistics. His lectures are extremely boring but example based. Go to recitation and and do the homework and practice exams. His tests are open book and open notes so it's almost impossible not to get a B or above.
Very solid professor for macro. His lectures are kinda crazy sometimes, but he has all the main ideas on courseweb for students to access. Read through those notes before tests and you'll be fine, tests are very straightforward.
I actually really like him. He's a little whacky and hard to talk to but he understands the real-life implications of statistics. I basically went to no lectures, read his textbook for 3 hours before each test, and still got an A. But I probably would have gotten more out of going to lectures because he's really knowledgable.
Literally went to 3 classes the whole semester and have got As on both exams. Lecture is pointless because he just reads from his notes. Just read the lecture notes and do the practice true and false Qs and youll do fine. Have to go to 10 recitations which are actually pretty helpful if you dont go to lectures.
