Great guy, really nice, isn't out to get you at all.
Has a tendency to ramble, but a good teacher.
Fabulous, I considered switching to Blair just to take more of his classes
Awesome Class..awesome professor!! Sings, Acts, and plays the piano. He rocked my world. Loves the theater and it shows with his class. And, when I took him, the class was only 2 papers. Favorite professor I've had at Vandy.
Easy grader, and relatively interesting.
Lovensheimer knows his music history and theater. He has a genuine passion for teaching, and really cares about his students. He's a great professor, and keeps you interested and engaged.
He was an amazing professor. I learned so much and didn't have to try hard at all. He wants to make sure that you learn and do well in his class.
Lovensheimer is AWESOME. This class was ridiculously easy, and I feel like I'm able to appreciate music on a whole new level. I'd highly recommend this class and professor...he's very funny, too.
One sweet piece of eye candy. This hunk of man meat really knows how to teach. Very funny and interesting.
Fabulous!!!! I can't say enough good things about this prof!
He'll tell you everything you never knew about popular music- while also telling you about his quite interesting life!
What a stud!
He is awesome! His lectures are interesting and still follow the reading, so you feel like your homework is worthwhile. ALso, his quizzes are very predictable and fair...no tricks here!
The hardest thing about American Music is staying awake.
Best teacher at Vanderbilt
One of the best teachers at this school! Very interesting class, fun, and easy to study for.
He is the most adorable and wonderful teacher I have ever had! He makes my every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! He's funny, sarcastic, and has a wonderful sense of humor! 2 thumbs up (if I had more thumbs, they'd be up to)! He is the epitomy of hotness!
Witty and urbane (not that the A&S kids actually listened closely enough to get the jokes)... this man gives AMAZING lectures. A jewel of a prof.
I'm an A/S student, and I get his jokes.
very easy
What a joke, but how much fun. American Popular Music rocks.
Will make you learn to love jazz, even if you don't know what it is.
Very funny and intereting lectures. Would recommend this class to anyone.
Intro to Jazz is one of the best courses I have taken here. He is an amazing lecturer and really cares about the students. Not difficult either... just read or come to class and you'll do fine. I wish more professors were like him. He rocks!

Very interesting. Very clear lectures. He always lets you know how everything fits together. Pretty much the only history credit I've ever enjoyed.
HE'S AMAZING!!!!
Amazing teacher! this class is insanely easy! it's all memorization! the quizzes are uber easy! i loved this class! any class you can take with him do it!
He is awesome! Everyone should take a class from him. You just have to memorize the notes he gives in class and go to review sessions. He's also really helpful outside of class too. Highly recommend
Lovensheimer is a badass. He's funny, interesting and not difficult. Just come to class and read and you'll be fine, easy A if you do the work. He's also a really cool guy and worth getting to know outside of the class.
Every single person at Vanderbilt should take this class to fulfill the American Component. It's incredibly easy and Jimbo is an understanding teacher.
wonderful cple requirement. easy A if you can take notes and study...listening quizzes are kinda hard, though. interesting professor.
Now I'm a big Fan of Love but let me tell you his attitude has been pretty pissy lately. He has not returned our last exams or papers and we are days away from the final and have no idea what our final grades are. Like I said I like the guy a lot but he needs to stop being so pissy in his emails.
I hope the school continues to support the country music class. JL has excellent lectures. I highly recommend the class and the professor.
Wonderfully fun and very into his subject. It's always good to have someone like that teaching. Glad to see he's accepted baldness, unlike my current boyfriend!
Perhaps not the easiest class in the book--the fact that there's only 3 listening quizzes (instead of 7) makes the class a bit more difficult. Learned an incredible amount, however. He no longer hands out review sheets, so attend the review sessions, read your notes and you'll be fine.
the best teach at vanderbilt
this dude is AMAZING. he is hilarious. His course sort of blows. His tests are very very easy AND you get to see engineers do poorly. it is priceless. I still talk to him when i see him around. He is a great musical mind. He will make you think about music in a new way. VERY EASY TESTS. no homework. great teacher.
Dr. L is absolutely adorable and his favorite Beatle was John. Definitely take this class, but keep in mind that sororities get the tests and will always do well without having to take notes or pay attention. Tests are fill in the blank, so if you blank out you're screwed, but lectures are AWESOME.
Very interesting class but terrible in terms of grades and papers. It's just really weird how he teaches and wants the papers done. Don't take it. I would have dropped out if I had known about that class.
This class is a great. I never went, except for the quizzes and tests and will get an A-. He emails you review sheets that tell you what you need to know. HONESTLY, THIS CLASS IS AN EASY A. I never read, never went to class, or studied except the night before a quiz or test. He's also a really nice guy. He called me out for not going to class.
Dr. L is great, funny and full of knowledge. his smaller classes at blair are a lot of work, but worth it. he really does care about his students and works hard to get everyone in office hours at least once or twice.
Maybe I watch too much tv, but am I the only one who thinks this guy looks like Mr Garrison from South Park?
The class is harder than it sounds, but there is always a review and review sheet before tests. I loved the class. The man is hilarious on top of everything else.
He's a great one. Knows wayyy too much... in a good way
Easiest Class Ever...I went to class only for the listening quizzes and exams...he called me out on it when I handed in my final, but I still got a flat A...this class is purely for GPA Boosting
Take this class! It fulfills american component of CPLE and it's an easy A. The material isn't that boring, and Dr.L is really an interesting guy. He's a really funny guy and REALLY wants his students to do well. Everyone should take this class
Great professor
Country Music is easy and very interesting-- he realizes people take the class because they want to
The jazz class was easy for the most part, except for having to read an arduous book and write a paper on it. The material is also interesting and the class is most bearable when he's not throwing a mini tantrum or cracking jokes about drinking, drugs,a nd partying. He is overly verbose, and has a tendency to pretend to be humble. He buggged me.
Ok this class appears easy and many upper class people will tell you it is. Well guess what? HE CHANGED THE WHOLE CURRICULUM. this class is no longer that easy, BE CAREFUL. getting an A in this class would require lots of studying and hard work.
Intersting class and interesting guy. Tests are straightforward and grading isn't too harsh.
EASY! goto class for attendance points and dont pay attention. I never read and I got an A. Just memorize all the crap he tells you to and make sure you know the songs!
Very interesting guy and has a lot to share. You can skip the class once a week and still do well by going to the review sessions and studying what the TA tells you will be on the exams. If you are looking for a 3 credit course with not too much work, this is the course and the prof for you.
He loves musicals and he's very funny. It's a fun class and I like that he explains the musicals in the context of the history.
Funny, engaging, knowledgeable. You'll have to do a good bit of memorizing for this class, which is both boring and stupid, but it's not difficult.
Funny, engaging, incredibly passionate about musicals, however he is AWFUL about returning emails, and incredibly inefficient about grading. Decided a few days before our last midterm that we were not going to have one anymore because he simply didn't have time to grade them all. Incredibly unfair to those who needed the grade.
Loves American music and shows his enthusiasm every day in class. Know details he says are important. Read about the songs' musical characteristics from the book for quizzes, know everything said in review sessios for the tests, and you can get the A. Best way to fill the American history requirement.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Knows more about musical theatre history than most people in the world. You can tell he really knows his stuff and although his lectures aren't mandatory you want to go because it's interesting. Pretty soon you'll be reading the textbook he's writing. Awesome guy
Really great guy. Cares about students and wants them to do well. Pop music lectures were almost always interesting and sometimes funny as well. Not difficult to get a good grade as long as you memorize and study from his review sheet.
The best guy! Take him if you can. he is fun, intelligent, interesting & wants all to do well. returns email immediately (unlike prior comments). Made me excited & passionate about subject I never was before. He's a must!
Wonderful prof, hilarious too. Lots of cool documentaries watched in class. He takes attendance on Fridays when he thinks people will skip/be out of town. Three exams, two papers. He makes the tests from his notes on OAK so don't bother taking your own notes in class, just show up and enjoy.
I really liked his class a lot. He makes it incredibly fun and interesting. Gives really helpful review guides to the tests, study from them and you can ace the tests! Realizes it's an elective, so doesn't give a heavy workload. Really seems to understand the students. I would recommend him to everyone!! he really made music fun.
Absolutely awesome class. The tests are really easy, but that definitely does not mean the class is a joke. Dr. Love knows how to make an very interesting lecture. The early stuff in the course (Native Americans, Puritans) is a little slow, but the rest of the material is really good. Go to class, get the attendance points.
Dr. L is AWESOME!!!!! He really enjoys what he's teaching and is there for the students. This class was my absolute favorite and I HIGHLY recommend it.
Dr. Lovensheimer is THE BOMB! I loved his class. He's such an interesting lecturer, a very vibrant teacher and all around just great. I think I ended up with a B+ but he gave A-!!
Take class
Had an overall great experience in the class. The textbook reading is not always engaging, but he finds GREAT supplemental readings to augment the text. Does have a liberal bias, but working hard on reading and writing assignments earns his respect. Very laid back and passionate about the subject. Reasonable in terms of homework assignments.
Dr. Lovensheimer is amazing! Makes lectures as interesting as American music can be (which honestly isn't interesting at all). But he gives reviews that make tests easy, but you do have to know the material before the test. If you are looking for an easy A I would definitely recommend this class, but you do have to do some reading and studying.
This class seems to be getting slightly harder each semester. My friend took this last semester and told me the tests this semester are a little harder.
Very easy class definitely take. Tests are easy, i never paid attention and got A+'s on everything. Outlines he gives before tests literally tell u everything u need to know. EASY A
Frustrating. Does not teach facts, assigns articles about abstract concepts that go way over most students' heads, talks about overly complex topics without covering the basics. Assigns a reading, then sits on his stool and talks about the reading for the entire class. Some class discussion, otherwise little engagement. VERY nice guy, accessible.
Went into this class thinking it was a joke. Not a complete joke, but very easy. 2 take home midterms (they're essays though), a performance review of a show that you go see on your own time, and a final paper. If you like musical theater, you'll love the class. If you don't, have a friend in the class sign you in.
Absolutely the easiest class ive ever taken. Two take home (but not open book?) essays, a final paper, and one review of a show. You can not do a second of work other than writing the papers and still get an A. Also so funny, entertaining, and overall a great guy. DEFINITELY take this class if you get the chance
Pretty easy class. The professor is very funny and shows you a lot of clips in class. Lecture based class so you don't have to know anything before going in, even though it helps to know about musicals. He's a lenient grader even though he returns papers really late.
Pretty easy class but he was extremely unhelpful. He is a very weird lecturer. Also, he makes you read his own book and then has you write an essay on it. Basically if you just present the same arguments that he uses in the book you will get an A on it.
One of the worst professors at the school. Lovensheimer is sassy, unhelpful, and unresponsive.
He is an incredible professor. The lectures were interesting and the test material was easy. Just follow along with the slides and you will be fine.
MUSL 2600 is Vandy's most hidden gem, if you need AXLE credit for US History and want an easy A, take this class! Dr. L's lectures are clear and interesting, his tests follow the study guide exactly, and there is almost no HW. Despite what the description says in YES, you do NOT need to have previous music experience for this class.
The overall class topic and lectures are kind of boring if you aren't into musicals. However, the professor is super nice and accomodating. There were only a couple of papers to write and the grades very high. Take this class for AXLE
Such a fun class if you like musical theater. Lots of videos and relatively entertaining lectures. This class had very little work too, easy A if you show up and write a few short papers!
His lectures are very boring, unless you're into musicals. However, he grades the papers easily, which are only grades for this class. Should be an easy A if you attend his class and put in decent effort in the papers.
Professor Love is very passionate and this class is not stressful or hard at all. He genuinely wants to share his love for musical theater with his students and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He doesn't give much feedback on the papers but he's also not a tough grader. I enjoyed this class and it fulfills HCA.
Dr. Lovensheimer is a very entertaining and engaging lecture who brings in a lot of his own experiences and stories about musical theatre. His lectures are interspersed with video clips of shows, and the class is graded based on 4 reflection papers that are each 4-5 pages. He will be missed at Vanderbilt!
