Jim was a professor at USC before teaching at Ventura this year. He uses Powerpoint to teach the class about chapters from the textbook. The textbook gives you information about how to create, research and deliver a speech. This semester we are giving 4 speeches, and a class debate at the end in place of a final. Overall he's a great guy!
Get's pretty boring sometimes, and takes attendance everyday. The tests are based off his powerpoints, and some of the book. Speeches aren't that hard, but make sure you do the outlines correctly, he bases a lot of the grade of them.
New professor from USC. Very professional individual that treats students like adults and is clear in his requirements. Would definitely recommend. Total amount of homework is 3 easy tests and 4 speeches, with an easy debate as a final. Show up every day, because he takes attendance.
The workload is over the top. His lectures are powerpoints and at times can speak really fast but he teaches well. There was too much information in this class being crunched up and he grades really really hard (like most comm teachers for some reason). Not an easy A by far. Lots of reading and trying your best will get you a B at most.
Not an easy class, he does not base tests off of study guides or notes. His grading is as follows no work no grade no late papers no exceptions. If you are looking for a class you will hate through out the semester, this is the one for you.
I have mixed opinions about this teacher, he is a good teacher, as far as lectures. However he changes things that could impact your grade. His class is hard I believe earning an A is difficult. He is poor at positive enhancements or comments, he will point out your faults before praise your efforts. He is very critical
A lot of your grade is based off of the debates. He is really harsh on your papers, especially for people who have never debated before. Tests are rather straight forward and from the book/powerpoints. Attendance is mandatory. Pay attention during debate explanations because unless you can catch his office hours, you won't get another explanation.
If you are an A student, you would get a B, not an A, if you are a B or C student, forget this class. Careful choosing this teacher if you care about your GPA, or taking any other courses at the same time, it isn't going to work. You are better off driving to other colleges if this is your only choice - great at lectures, knows the material.
I would not recommend taking this teacher. He is not fair at all. He will fail you if you don't post the assignments early. I took an online class so that my schedule was more flexible. I took this class for my Major (Communications!)and less than a month from the semester ending, he dropped me from the class and I had a B!
Not recommended ! Often goes off topic and tends to insult individuals very discreetly ! Puts you on the spot.....
although i took an intro to communication, we had to do long speeches. i had As on all test and assignments but i still only received a B in his class. He is unfair on grading and will take any opportunity to belittle or put you on the spot.
This isn't the class to be handed an A, but you will definitely be a better speaker by the end. Tests are based off of PowerPoints + book chapters and are fairly easy if you use the study guide. Jim is very helpful, especially if you take the time to visit at office hours. I received an A. It's more than possible if you put in the effort!
Says he's open to office hours, but isn't a very approachable guy. I felt more intimated than comfortable in this class. The lecture itself is basically what the book is, except it is taught at a very fast pace.
Jim is very critical. His lectures can be confusing at times , but he does ask if his points are clear . If you leave his class room without understanding the material its your own fault. Overall I enjoyed this class. If you show up and pay attention you will do fine in his class.
In this class, you are expected to consider more than your own opinion on why media might affect people, and Jim makes you think about your opinion. Class was never boring and there were many interesting topics discused. Jim is tough - but he gives you a LOT of feedback and allows open book quizzes and rough draftsredos so you can improve.
This was the 2nd course I took with Jim this semester. I learned so much about how to make arguments better and we had a cool debate at the end of the semester about marijuana legalization. Jim gives you A LOT of feedback on papers if you read it and do what he says on the next paper you will do a lot better. Also will help you tons in office hours
I took speech with Jim. He makes it interestinf and I was afraid at the beginning but by the end felt a lot better about speeches. If you are confused GO TO OFFICE HOURS. HUGE HELP with finding sources and writing your speech but isn't interested in excuses if you dont do the work or come to class. I got an A I am proud of because I worked hard.
This is the class to take if you actually want to learn to think logically and communicate clearly to groups of people. He gives excellent feedback. I learned a lot!
This class was really great. Jim knows a ton about argument and makes it easy to understand how to understand and answer arguments. The presentations and class debates were interesting, and jim gives you articles to help you support arguments in the debate, and helps people prepare extra for debates in office hours. Never boring - I learned a lot.
Took this class last year half onlinehalf face to face. Great teacher but only met once a week so not a lot of time in class to ask for help. Really knowledgeable , knows his stuff, makes class interesting. We talked a lot about media business like television, film, video games and social media. Big project for semester was blog writing project.
Maritato is a very intellectual and passionate communications professor. he can go off topic and put you on the spot. but everything he says does make sense. the man knows his stuff. so don't try arguing with him if he says something controversial. keep listening, you will see where he is coming from. not many tests, a few debates. good prof!
Knows his stuff but he can be a jerk. He grades really harshly on speeches and hes overall kind of a pain. He WILL try to put you on the spot if you dont show up 100% prepared and he will call you out in front of everybody for it. There are better/nicer professors at vc that teach the same required classes. Minimal textbook use.
He gives lots of feedback, and challenges you to explain your logic, which helped me improve my presentations. I learned things that helped me be more successful in my other classes too. Good teacher!
He's clear about what he wants you to do and when he wants it done. Just follow the directions and you'll be okay.
He's the type of professor that knows the material and expects you to understand it right away. He will call you out in front of the class. Overall, not a fun class to be apart of.
He puts you on the spot and calls you out in a belittling way. Very close minded and one-sided when hearing out other's ideas. He can be a nice guy and will continually ask the class if they need any clarification. I'm one to work hard for my grade, most students received a B and worked their behinds off. He also plays favoritism w his students.
A media class with him is okay. Truth be told I never cared for how mass media worked, I just needed the class to finish my degree. Quizzes are online and are highly based off of the book, so be prepared to go through the entire chapters finding and applying the term to the questions. An ok class at best, wouldn't recommend taking it with him tho.
Jim's tough and doesn't have patience for people who are disruptive or disrespectful but this was still among the best class I took last semester. We talked a lot about entertainment and news business. There are open book take home quizzes, easy homework sheets a paper and midterms w/ study guides. Gives a lot of feedback on papers/tests.
Taken a bunch of classes with this prof as a major. Interesting class but not easy. Really smart teacher, but tough. Not an easy class he expects a lot but fair. Debates require a lot of work but he gives clear requirements and samples. Looks over rough drafts via email. Learned a lot but worked my butt off.
Taken a bunch of classes with this prof as a major. This one is probably the most interesting and easiest. Talked a lot about media and how it is made and marketed. Easy homework worksheets,online/take-home quizzes, gives study guides for exams. Big essay for the semester is an essay about how audiences are influenced by a TV show or movie.
I took 3 classes with Jim for my major and he is one of the most helpful professors at VC. He gives very helpful and clear feedback on how you can improve. He has his standards high because he knows you can do well and achieve great success in his classes. He is also always willing to help and talk things out. I highly recommend him.
I liked this professor a lot until he decided to push his leftist views on everyone. Not cool especially if students disagree. Thinks he knows everything. He's funny sometimes I guess, pretty serious about the speeches so don't miss class.
Really like this instructor. Mostly lecture/discussion. If you participate you will enjoy the class more. Quizzes are online, open book. Gives study guide for each exam. Willing to answer all questions. The topics are interesting. Its all about how we use media to communicate. Instructor is really funny.
He seemed to bring in a lot of anger to the classroom. Whenever he was in a bad mood it came out in class and was not an enjoyable experience. He is good at teaching a lesson but he has a very harsh way of going about it, be warned.
Jim's class is put together very well. His classes are hilarious and extremely intriguing. He's always willing to help you with any questions you have. The material is not hard to learn and much of the information taught is relatable and applicable to your everyday life. I would definitely recommend taking this course.
Mr. Maritato does a great job of introducing argumentation into your life. The class is very intellectually demanding and Mr. Maritato is awesome at bringing the class up to par. I always had fun in this class and I grew ALOT in this class.
debate class was fun and informative. he wants understand, so he asks questions all around. ince you get passed the theory phase with the tests, the debates are fun
For the first 2/3 of the semester, not a class went by where he didnt berate someone, sometimes repeatedly, for not following his directions. We were afraid of asking questions, fearing an angry answer. He also takes a long time to grade assignments, oftentimes months after collected and with a different grading criteria than discussed.
The cold hard truth is if you have to take COMMVO1 Jim is the only professor at VC. The class itself is interesting but he lectures are pretty lackluster. Jim is a ass and if he is having a bad day beware. 2 Tests, 1 paper, 1 Final speech, and lots of online quizzes. Make sure you do all the HW, and ace all of the quizzes and you'll get through it
Only reason I didnt drop this class is because it fit with my schedule. Very rude and unapproachable. Seems to get a rise out of humiliating students in front of the whole class. Expect to spend hours on speeches and speech outlines just for them to be torn to pieces by him. There are so many other great communication professors to take instead.
This professor was pretty cool at first. Some weeks into the semester you see his true colors. He tends to belittle students when asking questions about the material, making one feel stupid. He, overall, isn't a very respectable teacher. Would definitely not recommend him.
Not everyone likes this guy because he doesn't listen to excuses or give makeups. But he's also fair, knows a TON, and will look at your rough drafts via e-mail and tell you how to get better. Cares a lot about his subject, but isn't willing to put up with crap and excuses. If you're a smart person who can follow instructions take him.
The review below mine is pretty much what I wanted to say. I don't think he adequately prepared us for the speeches. Definitely a hard class, but if you do all the assignments to his standard it's not horribly difficult to get a B. Ive taken anatomy and statistics, but I think this class has caused me more stress than those classes combined.
Jim has so much fun teaching this class and even though it is not easy, he is always accessible outside of class. He is super funny too. As long as you are making the effort to do well in his class, I do not think he is that mean like some say. He is always willing to help you.
His debate class is really challenging but so rewarding. He clearly has lots of experience in debate and gives really good examples! Love his class.
Comm V10 was one of the hardest classes I've taken at VC. Tests require dedicated studying, and presentations are graded harshly. Everything is held to a high standard. Because of that, however, you'll learn and grow. About Jim - Sometimes seems curt, but doesn't mean unwell. Serious man, knows his stuff admirably. Don't mess around in his class.
The absolute worst professor I have encountered at Ventura College. Maritato has no respect for anybody but himself. He takes every opportunity to make his students feel stupid for asking any possible question. Learned more from reading the textbook than from his lectures or his feedback. Would recommend taking argue and debate and MP or OX college
dude seems to bring personal problems to class a lot. also makes you feel stupid for asking questions and will berate you for it. I took him last semester and wouldn't recommend him to anyone I like
Maritato has very high standards as he was a professor at USC. He's a very tough grader. He'll find something bad to say, or a bad grade to give for any of your work. Very tough grader, and barely gives credit for homework that is 100% done and turned in on time. DONT TAKE HIS CLASSES. IM WARNING YOU!!
Personality wise, he attempts to be the smartest in class and is willing to shut students up in the middle of a sentence which may come off as rude. As a teacher and how he grades, he assigns work at least once a week which requires you to read the textbook in depth.
Jim Maritato sets a high bar for his students. He wants to be the smartest in the class. He's a very tough grader. When I was in his class we were filmed during our speeches. Many students dropped because of this. Sometimes he makes you sound stupid about your speech or ideas. I'm glad that I got a B+, but would never take him again. Be prepared
Book was not used very much it does help to have one for vocab and examples that can be hard to find online. He does not take any excuses or anyone who does not pay attention the first time. You must do your work on time attendance is important if you want to get a good spot during presentation. You must be able to step out of comfort zone.
He has handed out many assignments, we use flip grid weekly. He is a tough grader, and has a view of his way or no way. He is knowledgeable about his study and it shows, tries to be funny and isn't. If you don't need to take this class, don't.
Of my 8 years that I have been taking college courses, I can safely say that Jim is the most hostile professor that I have ever had. He will take every opportunity to berate students for anything he can, especially if you have the audacity to ask him to clarify something. He also regulatory wastes the class's time ranting about his personal life.
Taking him on Zoom/Online because of Covid so not sure how he is in a traditional classroom but I can say the struggle is real. I feel it's an unreasonable amount of work for a class we should be taking in person. The lectures we have to watch are also so long for no reason. Takes a long time to grade too. He is a smart guy but needs to EDIT.
Jim likes to talk about himself. Took his class and found out the hard way that he is very nit-picky and not always pleasant to listen to. Gives decent feedback but could defiantly improve on his own communication skills.
Jim outside of class is actually a comical and witty guy. Its a shame to take his class to find out hes actually nothing like that, in class. He seems to constantly be looking for diminishing qualities in students. He pessimistic, vain, and offers no flexibility. He talked about teaching at USC a lot, I wonder if he expects the same from VC?
i turned in every singke assignment on time to the critera he assigns. he gives bad grades to people based on something that he didn't explain or just gives you a bad grade with no reason why. emailed him for help on time and he argued with me like a small child. Totally disconnected from the class after that. i was almost scared to ask him for hel
Even though I got an A in his class, I wouldn't take it again. I have yet to meet a classmate who got a perfect score on the presentations we did. His feedback is harsh. One time he made the assignment due on a Friday and then at 12:00 a.m closed the assignment. If you want to be challenged and risk your gpa take him.
Jim may be the single worst professor I have had. He gives you a clear set of criteria for speeches, you meet them, only for him to turn around and say you did something wrong that was never mentioned before. The "feedback" you receive is demining, he speaks to you as if you were a child. This was the most stressful course I have taken. stay away!
I went to ask for help during office hours and left feeling humiliated. You can tell he tries way too hard to be "quirky" and funny but just comes off as abrasive. He tries to show off how "smart" he is by being so above his students. Even if you try your hardest, he doesn't recognize that, he only grades on accuracy. Unforgiving and rude.
Honestly this is the first teacher at VC that has been very difficult to communicate with, he is very though and met with a lot of negative feedback. Instead of being a teacher and helping he always finds something negative or wrong to critique you in. Not an enjoyable course.
As mentioned with some of the other reviews, he loves to talk about himself. "I do all these wonderful things for you, the student". "Not because i want to, but because you need someone like me to stand up for you". Has no concerns with belittling students in class for questions, missed answers, or what he deems to be unworthy responses.
I really suggest you look for a better professor. He always gives us feedback very late and is disappointed when you don't meet his very high expectations. This is just a V01 class and doing the work felt like my life depended on it. Unless you want a professor who works you to the bone and still gives you a bad grade, then look for another one.
Literally worst class i've ever take. So rude. CANNOT stand this teacher.
Taking a V01 class and he does not have an efficient way of teaching it. He has very high expectations. Grades harshly. He will tell you all of the things you did wrong and take his time doing so, but will not offer any solutions to how you can improve. He is also not understanding at all! Keep that in mind. Look for another one I don't recommend.
Incredibly rude, made my girlfriend upset. Take anyone else.
He didn't give feedback in a timely manner at all. He relied mostly on the students peer reviews as guidelines for what to do. Assignments weren't worth as many points as they should have been with all the different lines he wanted the students to hit. Very hands off teaching style. The instructions were sometimes unclear or even contradictory.
Understandable that Professors must be little strict and provide constructive criticism towards their students. BUT this professor grades very harshly
I still got an A in this class, but he was very rude to lots of other students and talks like he is the only one who deserves to speak. He will degrade people in front of the class and will not give you any good feedback on ways to improve, and likely would get mad at you for asking. Assignments were fun and he looked like he cared a lot, but yeah.
Just don't.
Idk what's up with this professor but he's a big NO for taking this class whether it's online or not. def don't recommend.
Doesn't grade until weeks after but has a strict deadline set for students stating that if you miss the first assignment you lose credit on the next few that are linked to it. He leaves very long comments on your assignments stating what you did wrong but doesn't give you the chance to correct it. LOTS and I mean LOTS of peer reviews as well.
He is strict on due dates and when you don't turn something in, that makes you lose the opportunity to even turn in the next assignment after. Some of the instructions are not very precise or clear and made it very hard to even do the work. A lot of the work that you do for this class is grading other peoples work which wasn't beneficial at all.
Spare yourself and do not take intro comms with this dude. An intro class is not supposed to be as difficult and complicated as this professor makes it. You do not learn anything as one the main things you do is basically grade other people's work through peer evaluations. Can be rude w/ his feedback and lags with grading.
Bias in grading practices is evident, compounded by contradictory instructions. Upon raising concerns about uneven grading practices within the class, retaliation ensued, characterized by meticulous scrutiny and disproportionately harsh grading of all assignments.
Definitely the rudest teacher I've ever had. He gave me "feedback" on an outline that just consisted of him going on for PARAGRAPHS of everything I did wrong in the most snide manner possible. I understand teachers have to be tough with grading but there's a difference between tough and just downright disrespectful. Take literally anyone else.
Did not grade assignments until the last week of class. Very unclear instructions on all assignments.
I had this professor for the spring of 2025 and nothing about what is said has changed. I can see why more than half the class ended up dropping the class by the second and third assignments. He's is not understanding of any sort. I am failing this class, basically because he didn't like my assignment topics and didn't let me fix them, he failed me
I'm telling you right now, even if you need this class, do not take it, my class started with around 30 students, then dropped to 7 by the end. He's gives no extra credit, so if you fail, you fail hard. Please do not take his class! I have never had a professor like this!
An extremely tough grader that does not give the opportunity of re-takes or opportunities for extra credit. His idea of “feedback” is leaving you paragraphs telling you what you did wrong with no way of rectifying mistakes. If understand communications is important, but he really acts all high and mighty for what the class actually is. Avoid him.
Do not take this class. He has no respect for his students. 17 students have dropped and he claims they “wasted his time” He doesn't know the rules of what can be used in his own class, the class average is very low, and he WILL NOT give you the critical feedback he claims. I encourage any other teacher other than him.
I highly recommend avoiding Intro to Communication with Professor Jim Maritato. For an entry-level class, he makes the course unnecessarily difficult and confusing. By the second or third assignment, more than half the class had dropped, which speaks volumes about the learning environment.
I took COMM C1000, and it was not good. I understood the assignments but he graded very harshly. Feedback was on what you did wrong rather than helping. Does have a 48 hr extension period for 1 assignment only, which helped with a difficult assignment. If you can don't take his class, but if you need it, take it, just be prepared to do your best.
Professor can have confusing feedback on assignments and shows no remorse over your grades. He grades tough. I feel that he is a good professor if you are ONLY a communications major. If you are any other major and you need to take a comms class please do not take him. Save yourself unless you are a COMMS major. Thanks! Listen to the reviews.
