Jim is one of the best professors ever, though he uses a lot of his own material for examples. But he's funny and smart - definitely the guy to take if you're smarter than the average bear. Has interesting assignments and good books. Very sweet guy!

I recommend everyone to take this class. I dropped two ENG 1A classes before taking Jim's class. I couldn't get past writing that first essay about myself but Jim gave us some good advice and I was able to get through and ended up with an A. He has a lot to teach but does it in a way that is interesting and everyone in the class can relate to. He uses a lot of his own examples and picks text work that is up to date and attention-grabbing. No Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in this class.

This teacher used a lot of interesting material. I actually have a new favorite author because of this class. I bought and read more books by Rick Bragg; the author he uses for the required reading. He does refer to his own work from time to time. He is very interested and involved in the community when it comes to literature. He offers a lot of helpful feedback, and recognises students abilities. He makes the class as fun as an English class can be. However, he sometimes can be a little long-winded.

Mr. Ott is a great teacher. If you miss a class he lets you make up any tests you may have missed at the bank. He is very passonate about teaching. He loves his students and likes being there for them. Take him if you can.

Before taking this class I had no interest in writing. English is now my favorite class. Great, great, great teacher but his grading is way too excessive. He is full of himself and just brags about his accomplishments. I heard that other classes didn't do half as much work as our class, but overall if you can stick through it, it's fairly easy. He is helpful, but when he looks you in the eyes it seems as if he's reading your mind.

I took Jim's English 1A class in the summer. There was a lot of reading and writing, but it is an 8 week class, instead of a 16 week class. He made everything interesting and enjoyable. This was my third semester and it was the best class-by far!

The ideal teacher. Expectations of you as a student are fair and clearly communicated. He gives interesting lectures and speaks well in front of the class. Prompt with grading as well as answering emails. The homework is writing about assigned readings, or just the reading itself followed by a quiz the next class. There are 5 (2-4 page) essays.

Possibly one of the best English professors at Las Positas. He is not a difficult grader and does not pile you with loads of essays. The texts we read make you really reflect about yourself and the world; Jim wants you to really get something out of the class and I most definitely did. If you have the chance, absolutely take this professor!

Easy, nice, gives lots of chances. Tells lots of stuff from his experience, which can be good to listen to. Books were good because I'd read them in high school, so easy to follow. Adds lots of students, so show up and you'll probably make it in.

You have to do the reading to pass the weekly mini quiz but the books are interesting and the chapters are short. He is very passionate about the class and willing to go over essays or topics with you. I wish I could take him for all my english classes.

Professor Ott is so helpful & funny. He gives clear instructions on everything. He likes to make random jokes in class which lightens up the mood. His lectures are very interesting. The books are definitely needed & attendance is mandatory if you want to pass. While he doesn't give a whole lot of homework, you will fail if you miss too many days.

Mr. Ott is a really cool guy, but when it comes to teaching he get off task very easily. He only assigns 4 essays trough out the semester. Make sure you do read whenever he assigns you reading homework, because there was always a test or summary due after.

Dr. Ott is super understanding and passionate about his job. You have to do the readings to pass his quizzes that you get weekly, but other than that, the class is really easy. He lets you skip the final if you attend all of the classes and gives you extra credit at the beginning of the semester assuming you'll attend each one.

Jim Ott is an all around great guy. He gives a lot of essays throughout the semester, but grades them on a clear cut easy to understand rubric. He cares about social issues and his students. The topics of the essays are controversial, but extremely relevant. I wish he was teaching ENG7

Very Inspirational ! I would take him again . Had him for English 1A and Quizzes are very easy literally 5 questions in them . Read is required but you can get away with it . But there is a few essay but he really helpful with informing you about it . Just overall helpful even with labs. Would recommend

Dr. Ott is a true gem of a professor. I took him for English 1A and his online classes were very engaging. You will have to read a book, but the book was a good read. As an international student, Dr. Ott's lecture was super helpful. His lecture is very professional, witty, and not boring. Assignment and quiz are not too much, so there is no pressure even if you have to take it with other course. His textbooks are also very interesting and inspirational books. This was one of the first classes that felt like an inperson class because there was constant interaction with the teacher. I enjoyed the reading, the research, and the writing. I thought the class was laid back, but a bit stressful when it came to the essays, but that's probably from my own pressure from myself. Just do the work/you'll do fine.

Professor Ott definitely understands online class students very well, and is super accommodating. The assignments are very manageable and if you do all your work you don't even have to take the final exam. I would definitely recommend this class to other students.
