This guy is not a teacher, he is a ****en fool. He stumbles around the classroom declaring his superior being and bragging about failing his own son. Just goes to show, he lacks discretion and respect for all his students.
where have the good teachers gone!
This teacher can not handle criticism!
NOT RECCOMENDED!!
this class with this teacher is not reccomended!
THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS. NO SUPPORT FROM THE INSTRUCTOR OUTSIDE OF CLASS.
the instructor is difficult to understand. no formal text.
worst class I have ever taken at HCC! Refund Please!
Easy subject matter made difficult by poor teaching skills!
I don't understand the other ratings. I found him incredibly accessable, and very helpful.
very accessable
very good teacher
The man is very easy to find and happy to talk with any student. I bother him all the time about philosophy&the incredible places he's visited. When someone with that much knowledge takes time to share it, you have to take advantage.
all you have to do is pay attention in his class, take notes, and read the required readings and you'll do fine. the only reason people don't like him is because he's very deep. i thought he was a great teacher!
He has an incredible amount of knowledge and really makes me think. He is a wonderful teacher and I am so happy that I chose him. If you don't understand something, do your part and find him.. He is easy to find and talk to.
He was impossible to follow in lectures, he doesnt stay focused and voices his opinions about things OTHER THAN PHILOSOPHY making it hard to tell what the actual subject matter is. He is the most unintelligent man I have ever met, and should be retired!!
I asked Dr. Perry if he could see me before the next test and his response was, "I did all my office time for the week on Monday you will need to wait until next week." Very accessible?NOT!
Mr. Jim Perry should be retired! His lectures are unclear and boring.Plus,He can't get over the fact that he has ex-wife. If you take this course you will hear "She was right for me, but I wasn't right for her." LET IT GO, PERRY!
I don't understand the other ratings. I found him incredibly accessable, and very helpful. You do need to do the required readings, take notes and listen. If you do an A will be easy. He gives lots of breaks on grading so if you try you will do well.
Professor Perry is an amazing man. His lectures are full of ideas, experience and insight. He is ALWAYS available during office hours and has the most amazing stories. Once you get the hang of his tests - the rest is cake.
You do need to do the readings, show up for class and teka notes to do good. Also go by his office and just chat or ask questions, he is very approchable and will sometimes give you helpful pointers for taking the test. He is not easy but it is itresting
Fun class, hell tests. The tests were so vague (but graded for specific answers) that even with mostly take home tests it was hard to get anything decent.
Yes, he does talk a lot about his personal life, but he uses it to relate to what he is covering. The test essay form can be vague, but you stretch yourself mentally, and I was never bored during his lectures. Not a class for the easy "A"
the easiest teacher to approach. grading is vague and not based on a mathmatical percentage. test out of 15 pts. 12 is an A. Open book exams. if you fail you deserve it!
The test are hare but you can get A's. You need to ask questions in and out of class though. His gradeing is very forgiving so if you show up and keep improveing you'll do well. TIP - don't interpet the meaning yourself you'll miss the real meaning (and there is only one)
He's funny and he encourages everyone to think as far out as our minds can reach. And his lectures are always fun. He' kind and very helpful. The people who have rated him poorly probably didn't pay attention in his class. In other words if you stay focus and study hard you can get an A.
I loved the class, but I wish there was a way to take it without the grade. It's full of great thinking, ideas, and comic gold; but the vague essay tests were murder and I got a D. Yes
I hated this class so much while I was taking it but after I took it I realized it was the best class I had ever taken I learned so much in this class it really opened my mind! The quizes are kinda hard they reqire you to think as long as you give him a valid answer he is reasonable! Grade was an A
great guy - long lectures, but keeps you entertained. Tests are 3, 100 word essays that count for Gordon rule- so that rocks (open book - even better) def. recommend to anyone, very understanding and forgiving. Great guy in my opinion!
Awesome guy. Very understanding, and he'll help yopu to understand.
Approachable, funny, and quite kind. Boring at times, but is forgiving. As long as you write what he wants to hear, you'll do fine.
must say you have to be retarded to fail. 4 open book open note essays and the final is take hm. he tells you what he wants to hear in the exams. very easy to approach and talk to as well. class teaches you concepts for the rest of your life. grading scale is anything over a 11 is an a.
Very approachable. At times boring and old. But with age comes wisdom- he KNOWS what hes talking about. Test are open book short answer. Tells you essay topic ahead of test date. And on test date- tells you what he wants you write about. Take note on what he makes emphasis on- it will be on the test
Class really makes you think and there is some reading that goes along w/ his class, you have like three books.(You dont read them cover to cover.) As long as you following along with his reading and show up, you should be fine! He is really goofy, he thinks all his jokes are soo funny! :)
Lectures were ONLY about his WIFE, CAT and an EX from his youth. Lectures were always off and had nothing to do with philosophy. Extremely hard grading considering we were taught nothing. 1/2 the class FAILED, 1/2 passed with a "C". I an A/B student never missed a day and got a "C". Ruined my GPA
This class was NOTHING like I thought it would be
He is a wave of fresh air after such experiences as professor Klee. Instead of giving 100 question multiple choice tests, all exams- even the final- are essay style..and open note!!! (not good if you are bad at writing) He is a great teacher and I have learned more about the real world and life in his class than any other class to date
Made class interesting and even funny at times. I learned so much and although I had more than 3 absenses (he said he would fail you at his discretion if you had more than 3) I made a C. If I had shown up almost every day I would have had better notes and made an A. Oh well... great teacher and class. Highly reccommended!!
Nice man and very interesting class. I learned alot and he was even funny sometimes. At times he appeared to be off-topic, but he always had a point that he was getting to. (a point related to the course) I think everyone should take this class. You are sure to learn alot that will stay with you (and help) throughout your college career and beyond
HORRIBLE. Incredibly unclear. Often, before class, people would ask each other if they understood anything we were supposed to be learning. No one ever did. Office hours and repeated emails were useless.
Not an easy course,MUST DO ALL HIS READING,or u will feel completly lost. His test are unclear..and found there wasnt a good way to study for them.FYI..their essay formed. But it wasnt too bad. The biggest problem for me was his final! GL anyone who takes him,it isnt easy but if you try..u should atleast get a passing grade!
He's a really interesting guy, he tells long stories and is very dramatic; he'd make a good Gandalf, old, wise, and prone to make bad puns. I liked him, but I thought his lectures wandered, and all of his points were indirect. If you're not on his wavelength, and if you don't have a firm grasp of the reading (which I had to read a few times to barely make sense of), then you will bomb his class. I found the questions on his test difficult to interpret because they were not straightforward.

Perry is a very intelligent man and has gone through a lot in his life, the people that do not understand him are the immature students that just came out of highschool and have NO idea about what lies ahead in their life. The course is VERY informative and takes ONLY commonsense to pass. His teaches that philosophy is a way to better your life.
Couldn't ask for a nicer guy! Wonderful story teller and is totally in love with philosophy. I just didn't get it and I'm an honors student. This was the toughest class I had this semester. It could have just been me. He's a very nice man and very easy to talk to if you need help. The tests are a killer. You'll be praying for a 10 or an 11.
His lessons have nothing to do with what is on his tests. If you do take this class good luck!
His "lectures" are basically him talking about himself for an hour. Tests are few questions based on subjective material - none of which is covered in lecture. Not helpful at all during office hours. When asked for further help he replied "read the material". Didn't seem interested in helping anyone get a better grade. Entire class was confused.
He is very egocentric, but a nice man. The only issue I had with his course was his grading methods. Unprecise, and random assignment of grades. The students who earned(A's)honestly have to be philosophy majors, or paid him off. I earned a (B), and to give you any sense of his grading - I made an (A) on three out of the 4 quizzes - 1 (B)?
Very unclear very arrogant did not enjoy his class at all
on page 88 of his book he claims that values are not directly observable. this is not the case many values are directly observable. for example if a student wears eye glasses it is safe to say that they value sight. i would not pick up a piece of old gum but i would pick up a dollar. he can be wrong sometimes and his grades are all based on opinion
This logic course with Jim Perry teaching it is not for the faint of heart. You had better be prepared to study hard to learn this material. If you apply yourself and study you'll do fine.
Tough teacher. The book was confusing and he was equally confusing. If you work hard and really apply yourself, you'll do fine (it also helps to be able to wrap your head around the concepts being taught). Does tend to get a little annoyed when students don't do well and there is a high student drop-rate when it comes to his classes.
Plato and Scientific Revolutions book was very difficult to comprehend. It's best if you read his book. His jokes aren't funny, he seems pretty arrogant with his Ph.D status, but his grading is okay; he drops your lowest grade. I suggest you read, read, ask questions, and read in order to pass this class. And his lectures are EXTREMELY BORING!
the lecture 4 out of 5 times are boring. Although he tries to make it interesting it just isn't. you never know what to expect on his tests and his grading is not mostly fair. Listlen and write down everything you can that he says because that is what will end up being important on the test.
He is a very hard teacher, i think the only good thing about this teacher is that their are hot girls in the class. I must have seem like 10 hot girls in my class. Maybe thats why i did so bad, but his teaching methods are so boring. I must have fallen alseep in his class 5 times. If ur able to pic another teacher, this class is boring and hard.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Incredibly insightful and interesting. Some of the preceding complaints are understandable, but easily overlooked. Maintain reasonable attendance, read the material (or most of it; preferably his book), then sit back and enjoy. Very personable and pleasant.
His teaching methods is really boring! If you want to pass this course i would highly not recommend this instructor.
I huess as far as Philosophy goes, he is good.
He is a very nice and helpful teacher, he'll be there if you need further explanation. He is very open-minded and although classes are not that fun,he tries his best at it. His book is very helpful so make sure you read it.

One of the best. This is a lecture-style class, not very interactive. If you aren't interested, you'd call it boring, but then why would you take it. This guy knows his stuff, he wrote the book on it (literally, he wrote the textbook). This is NOT an easy A, you have to work to understand the ideas. But that's why you're here, right?
He is a very nice man! He is a GREAT teacher! You do have to go to class and read the books, but if you do you will do just fine. His test are essay form, but most of the time open book. He is an inspiration to all!
great professor, great person, great class
He ended up being very cool. I was very worried at first. If you can manage to concentrate on his stories they do have meanings! It all came together in the end for me! I enjoyed the course!
DO NOT TAKE him unless you LOVE philosophy. His test questions are SO ridiculous and off the wall! he just babbles on and on in class about his wife and his life and BLAH BLAH. I took philosophy in High school and it was like I was taking a completely different class. I can't believe he gave me a C. Just avoid him if you can...REALLY!!!
HE IS NICE, BUT THE CLASS CAN BE VERY BORING!!
This class was complete B.S. I am an A/B student and I got a C. His test questions aren't hard, but if you do not write EXACTLY what he wants to hear he gives you a D. It's ridiculous. Do not take this class, it was useless, boring, and a waste of time.
The reason people have so much trouble in his class is because they are either incapable, or simply dont want to think abstractly. Don't take his class if you're looking for an easy A, but the class is very useful. He centers it around the fact that the majority of his students are young college students who dont know where they want to go in life,
Grades are based on a quiz after each chapter ( only 5 I think) and these are hard essay questions only two questions on each quiz. Each answer must be 100 words and the words he is looking for to get 5 points. Yes, his lectures are intereting ( he is about 72) but the grading I hate as it is subjective
I had him freshman year. Very easy to understand if you attend his classes and pay attention to his lecture. Make sure to focus to his textbook that he wrote. His quizzes are open book, so make sure you know where to access the material you need. Very wise. I learned a lot from him and earned an A. It was not an easy A though ;-)
Let me start by saying I got a B in this class.and A's in my other 2. That being said, DO NOT take this professor. When the class starts it seems very interesting. Then come the tests which are bs. They are essay Qs and he grades like a jerk. After he hands back tests he goes into a speech about our bad writing skills.Take this class somewhere else
Interesting lectures. Always talking about his happy marriage and contentness of life. Does a good job explaining concepts covered in class, but expects you to make your own connections for tests. Even though they're open book/note tests, I still didn't know if I wrote the answer he's looking for on the test.
This guy is a total loon bucket. He is not clear at all and his tests are 2 question essay... they are very hard. I do not recommend him to anyone..
Great person to sit down and talk with. Wise as an old white haried man should be. However, be prepared to be left scratching your head when the 2 question essay tests are handed out. They are open book. No matter what the question says he is looking for you to make a connection to his 3 level model from his book that he wrote.
Avoid this unless you like the stress of answering essay questions on tests and having to know exactly what triggers him. I am a good writer but this was way too subjective for grading i thought.
You must do a combination of both reading his book, other books and take notes from his lectures a must. His essay questions are HARD! This is not an easy class. I highly do not recommend him. If your second language is English-DO NOT TAKE this class with this professor.
He is among the worst professors I have ever had. His arrogance is surpassed only by his redundancy. His ability to twist lectures from philosophy to slogans of, ?stay in school? is condescending & unnecessary. If not for that reason, he twists them to discuss his horrible parents & how they died young. It's better to read the greats on your own.
HE IS HORRIBLE!!! AVOID HIS CLASS!!! HIS EGO IS THE SIZE OF THE MOON!!!
He is the worst instructor I have ever had. Not only is he narrow-minded, but his interest is only in his own opinion and his skewed manipulation of reality.
Don't take this class.
Any class with him as an instructor should be avoided at all costs!!!
Perry is a very wise man. There are about 5 tests total. No class work, just pure lecture. Make sure to take notes and read the chapters! The tests are pretty hard, but they're open book, so if you read a little bit, you can find the answers pretty quickly. But he expects you to make your own connection. He also has a great sense of humor! =)
If you like hearing about grandpa's past life stories, you will probably like this old geezer. He wrote the book that is used for this class so DO NOT CHALLENGE him with the Philosophy that you may understand because he comes back with his philosophical BS. I guess he means well by eaching from his past experience when he was a teenager(60yrs ago)
This instructor is impossible to please. You have to write 5(200 word)essays on four different topics and take a 100 word essay final. The book that is used is a philosophy book written by the instructor so he expects you to think like him and if you don't, he will guarantee you a "C" in his class. He is very boring and loves to talk about himself.
His class is tough but he breaks down complex issues into simple allegories and helps you when you need it, it may be a little boring but we would get into fun debates, his grading is strict but pay attention and you will do fine
Love seeing this. I was Jim's student before most of you were born. (1981). It seems he is still the incredibly awesome person he was then. What a great class. It is still an important part of my life, what I learned from him was never duplicated in any other classes, and I went on to a philosophy school.
Dr Perry is fun and personable..his tests are open-book and as long as you pay attention and aren't completely brain-washed from your tv, you should find this an interesting class. "Thank God for Science!"
I though I was going to get an A in his class but definitely didn't. All of his tests are made up of two essay questions and he grades them harshly. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Prof. Perry is an elite professor. He served as a strong mentor in my life during my years at HCC (1981-1983). Everything he teaches is designed around pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional thought, with the intention of getting student to the think post-conventionally. He LOVES students who think.
Very inspiring. He has helped shape the person I'm becoming.
Must take this course. Be prepared to write under pressure. KNOW the material. It will change your life.
He cares deeply about both his students and the subjects he teaches. This guy is one of those gems that you only get in a community college, because he's not in a crazy research/writing/tenure rat race at a university. Loved his class.
I came across this when I was trying to think of my English prof and started reminiscing. Prof Perry was the best and hardest prof I've ever had. I was an older student then around 1999. I sure was mad that I got a B but I have lifelong knowledge. I still have my papers and his book! I reread my papers every blue moon and should have been an A!
