He seems like an angry man. A very bold athiest as well.
he is the most person to listen to lecture.. i have never been able to stay awake in his class and he is very monotone... take someone else...
I wanted to fall asleep in his class
Pretty good teacher. A difficult test grader and the mid term and final are killer. But overall pretty entertaining and fun field trips!
Facinating man,Very smart, if you are not afraid to learn he the teacher for you.very fair.extra credit possible.
Loved this class! Repka is a great instructor, he really knows his stuff and will take the time to explain what you don't understand but you have to ask! The rock/mineral tests are tough but fun. Rock On Repka!
Love, love, love, love this teacher. He is fun and passionate about what he teaches. If you show interest in the class, than the class is easy and fun!!
This guy is incredibly boring and incredibly opinionated. Don't take him unless you want to hear his rants about stupid things like why you shouldn't live in seattle. Also the midterm and final are impossible!!!
I love this man!! He is a great teacher. Of course, you MUST study and do the reading if you want a decent grade. Plus, that deep voice of his is incredible!
I hated his class...very boring and unclear. He flirted way too much with a lady in the front row...felt like I was the third wheel on their date. Rock quizzes were impossible but I somehow managed to get a B by passing both midterm and final...
To be honest, he is a nice guy but has no concept of teaching. If you want to spend hours memorizing BS rock names/properties/ect than take this class. Also, make sure you like long, boring, monotone lectures. People in the class either sleep or did HW
Prof. Repka is one of the best instructors at Saddleback! I didn't think that I liked science until I took his class. Although the class is a little hard. Find a couple of people to study with and you are golden.
i think he is a great teacher. he knows his stuff and really enjoys helping others learn. i wish i could retake astronomy 21 because of how much awesome stuff i learned in it. and you people who thought he was too hard obviously arent good students. its called STUDY. then you will do fine!
I absolutely love Jim. He is one of the greatest teachers. He is opinionated, and the man does like to talk, but if you need help w/ anything he's there for you. His field studies are always a blast, I recommend Death Valley.
Jim is a really nice man. He makes himself very available to his students and is very open to answering questions. Science isn't my favorite, but he gave me an "A" for my hard work.
I HATED REPKA! IT SEEMED AS THOUGH I WOULD STUDY SO MUCH AND FAIL EVERY TEST. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE POINT RECOVERY, I WOULD HAVE NEVER PASSED. HE IS SO OPIONATED AND RUDE! THE TESTS ARE HARD...HE PICKS ONE SENTANCE OUT OF THE WHOLE CHAPTER TO TEST YOU ON! DON'T TAKE HIM!
Unenthusiastic, monotone, and boring! Every minute in that class seemed like an eternity. I couldn't stand his way of teaching. I studied so much for his tests and still didn't get good grades. If I was a speech teacher, I would give him an F. He made this interesting subject sound terribly boring!
Boring. Nothing but powerpiont lecture. Tells bad jokes that sometimes don't even sound like jokes. Says "um" a lot when he is gathering his thoughts mid-scentence. The tests are hard. Show up and pay attention, don't bother with the reading, and it's an easy B.
I don't understand what everyone is talking about. Tests are hard but that's GEOLOGY - EVERYTHING is in the notes from class and he gives you a chance to make up the problems you missed on every test. He knows his stuff. He makes time to help outside of class and doesn't burden you with lots of HOMEWORK! Just ask questions and Study!
Class seemed interesting at first, but became very dry. He lectures the full 3 hours. Sometimes he talks the whole time and misses the break. Goes on about things you don't even need to know about. half the lecture is his opinion. do NOT take this class unless this is your major.
He can be a little long-winded at times, but he gets the point across. He tries really hard during the labs so students unerstand the material. Just make flashcards for all the rock and mineral tests and you'll be fine.
Fantastic teacher. Quizzes and multiple choice portions of tests damn near impossible to do well on, but lots of opportunities to make it up. Incredibly nice guy who actually cares about whether you learn or not. Not an easy class but you will learn a lot.
HATED THIS CLASS! Even more him! He is by far the worst teacher I have had at Saddleback. He is very insecure about his teaching and says UMMMM and UHHH every other word. 3 Days before the final, he had nothing graded except the scantrons and rock quizes which we graded in class. If at all possible DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! Ended up getting a B somehow..
I truly enjoyed Jim's class. He may not have the appearance of a stereotypical professor, but he's a laid-back "real" guy and he truly wants to see his student enjoy learning. This is not an easy class, so if you're not willing to work hard, or looking for an easy A, go someplace else.
Boring. keeps saying ummm like he does not know what to say so it is difficult to understand him. If his grading policy were like others ( 80-100 is an A) I would have failed the class. Staying awake is a challenge.
Boring. I could not understand him because he would keep saying ummmm. The biggest chalenge was trying to stay awake.
He is a good teacher, but teaching a boring subject. The tests are hard because he doesn't give you a study guide but there is point recovery so you can't fail. He really does care about the learning process and is passionate about his studies
With his grading scheme I would not have had to take the final & still get an A. You are surrounded with Earth (Rocks & Minerals galore). As with Borella learn to draw and describe your drawings! Tried to convince me to Chg interest from Biology to Geo. Many took it for Lab units rather than passion or intest in Earth.
This is a good professor and very well spoken. he goes out of his way to help you understand the subject. he gives quizes every week that are about 15 questions but you can correct them and turn them back in for credit. Your mid- term and final are quiz questions (for the most part:) Great attendance= Better Grade with this professor.
Jim is very nice but his lectures are sure to put you to sleep. Natural Disasters was not as easy as I thought it would be but I still got an A. Make sure you pay attention to the lectures and study the text. The quizzes and tests are pretty much out of the book with his lectures filling in the details. I did learn quite a bit in the end.
Repka is a great guy, and I highly recommend you talk to him personally if you are interested in natural sciences. He really knows his stuff. His lectures can be extremely boring though. His quizzes and tests can be hard, but he lets get make up points on most. His grading system is much more lenient then most other teachers. Fun class easy A.
This is an easy lab class if you study a little bit. Repka is very helpful with labs and answering questions and emphasizes concepts over precision. Rock quizzes are fun but require studying (flashcards). Go to class and read the book -- he tests from lectures and text.
Great teacher! If you attend his classes and read the book it will be a very easy class. He also let's students recover points for each test and quiz. If you turn in point recoveries and study for quizzes/tests you should be set. His class isn't an easy A but it is fun and he is also a great teacher who enjoys his subject.
If you don't go to class it's not a big deal, since he lectures the entire class about random facts. VERY BORING! If you have no prior knowledge of this subject you will be lost the first day. The lectures have nothing to do with the tests. The tests are weekly, 15 questions and if you don't read the book you are lost. READ BOOK!
Dr. Repka is a fantastic teacher. He loves the subject matter and is very helpful. It's not an easy class but if you take notes in class and read the book you'll be fun. As a bonus, he's very entertaining!
He's a very good teacher. Hard class though. if you try a little, you'll be fine and pass.
Great class with the occasional (very fun) field trip. Repka hands out final essays, allows point recovery, drops lowest scores and has plenty of extra credit on rock quizzes. May get sidetracked during lectures but is good at answering quesions. Take notes, study handouts quizzes, KNOW ROCKS and it's hard not to get an A.
INTERESTING CLASS, ALTHOUGH HIS LECTURES MAKE YOU SLEEPY. TAKE A LOOK AROUND IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS CLASS, 2/3 OF THE STUDENTS ARE SLEEPING. MIDTERM AND FINAL IS STRAIGHT OUT FROM TEXTBOOK. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU HAVE UNTIL AFTER HE POSTS THEM ONLINE.. BUT IF YOU STUDY, ITS AN EASY CLASS, BUT DON'T EXPECT TO GET AN "A."
Jim and Larry Twicken are a dynamic duo. Jim is a rad professor who was clearly passionate about his work. I really enjoyed his lectures and he ended up leading me straight to geology. GO SLUGS!
He loves his job and knows his stuff. He does test corrections to help keep your grade up. Read and study the book!!!!!!!!! You dont always need the exact book but you need a good one. I like him a lot so please take him!!
Super smart and loves geology. Tests are hard but there is point recovery and grading scale is low. Funny and entertaining. Recommended.
This class was super easy. Lectures were really boring but I usually brought my laptop and did nothing the entire class. 15 point quizzes that you could make up points for and big tests were really easy too. Take this class if you hate science and need something easy for your GE!
Jim is an enthusiastic geologist who wants his students to do well. He has a few 15 pt quizzes (with pt recovery), rock ID quizzes, 1 midterm and final. He lectures a lot about certain subjects but moves through others very fast. You need to read the book to do well. Overall, I would recommend this class if its for your major but not for GE.
The most lenient teacher I have ever had. There is quiz recovery for all quizzes and even the midterm. Yes, class can be boring but he is a teacher worth taking. I got a B and I missed a couple of assignments and classes.
This class is very boring but he's a very nice guy and will do everything he can to pass you! His quizzes and the midterm have point recoveries and even though the material is miserably boring I'm sure you can at least get a C like I did. Ew all the rocks we examined. I never want to see another rock again.
Extremely boring class, not worth taking although he is a really nice teacher and is pretty lenient, the quizzes and tests don't come from his lectures or the book so they really don't make any sense
Repka is a pretty laidback professor! Doesn't take attendance, but lectures are very helpful and probably the only way you will pass the class. Curves pretty much all the assignments and allows you to make up points. Does get sidetracked often, but lectures are very interesting! Very lenient and laidback professor. Not too hard to get an A.
This man likes to teach... interacts with his students, answers questions... actually seems to give a dm. I had him spring of '12 and figured he deserved a review.
Pay attention, do the reading and study. Easy class to pass, but more effort is needed for an A. I would recommend the class because Repka is very helpful and geology is a cool and interesting subject. (And I'm not even a Geology major!)
If you like astronomy please take the class with him! He is an awesome teacher and explaines very well. The class is difficult for lazy people, if you pay attention to the class, do the quiz recovery and study before the midterm the finals you'll get and B or an A for sure
Very boring. I fell asleep almost every time. grading scale is curved by 10%, I got a B. You need the book. There are a bunch of 15 point quizzes that seem to have nothing to do with what he was talking about.
i would not recommend taking this class! his lectures are so boring. there are about 7 quizzes. nothing on the quiz was in lecture. one midterm and one final. allows quiz and midterm make up if you correct the wrong answers he will give you half credit. overall just really boring. im sure hes a great geology teacher but not astr. he means well.
What a cool professor. he has so much knowledge and is so friendly i lived his class so much im taking astronomy next semester and i cant wait. sometimes he gets off topic, but he is a very fair and fun professor. yes sometimes his lectures can get a little boring, but thats to be expected many classes are like that.
Best Geology and Astronomy in Saddleback ! The most interesting class I took in my entire life, and worth every minute spent there. Highly recommended. I took his astro 20 class fall 2013 and now astro 21 fall 2014
Professor Repka is a really good professor. Make sure you take notes on everything he talks about or puts on the board because that is what the tests are based on. I didn't bother buying the book because he doesn't assign reading from it. He is super helpful and knows tons about geology. Also, so the test recovery. It's really just free points.
Great professor. He's very kind and enjoys what he does. He is very intellectual and knows exactly what he's talking about and explains things well. Though class could be boring, he did pretty darn well for a subject like geology. He's always there when you need him so there's no excuse not to do well in his class. My favorite professor.
Repka was the first professor I had at Saddleback and my only complaint is that I can't take more classes from him. He is the reason I switched my major to geology. Make sure to take notes on his lectures. He will say he will post them on blackboard but it will never happen. Tends to ramble but is passionate about the subject. Def take his class.
I absolutely love Repka! He is the reason I changed my major to Geology. He is so funny and kind, and he makes the subject material so interesting because HE IS THE SMARTEST MAN IN THE UNIVERSE! My favorite part of his classes are his lectures because he is just so knowledgeable in the subject, its nuts. Like how can one man know so much info
he's a great guy but a very confusing teacher. I never knew what was due and when. The quizzes and tests are "based" on lecture but honestly, i have no idea where the test questions came from. I'm a straight A student and take good notes but test were hard and confusing. goes on long tangents and never knows where he left of in lecture. e.c helpfu
Jim is a really nice professor but his class was the worst I've taken. It was 3 hours long and he always lectured to the last minute. It's hard to tell if he's just going on a tangent during class or if it's something we should be taking notes on for the test. There are a lot of tricky quizzes but he offers point recovery for all of them.
Probably the most boring classes ive ever taken. Took it cause i needed it for my GE, but wow this class was hard to sit through. Your grade is based on quizzes, a midterm,& final, thats it. The only good thing was he allowed point recovery's after every quiz to earn back some points. Barley passed with a C, if you have a choice take something else
Jim is a great guy that knows more than just geology. He knows about ways to succeed in higher universities, and is an easy guy to approach. He also does the field study trips which are also extremely fun with him.
I took this class for GE, so it wasn't my cup of tea. The class was 3 hrs long and he just lectured the whole time, it was hard to keep my eyes open. However, he is extremely funny, easygoing, and offers EC. Repka is a very intelligent prof. and he knows his material. If geology is your thing this is your class. If not its definitely doable.
Very smart and knows everything about what he teaches. However his lecture and teaching style is hard to follow as he can be sidetracked into explaining things in absolute detail. He tests with material from his lecture and the textbook. Has assignments in class which require you to be present. Do you self-teaching and you may learn a thing or two.
I loves these class. However, his lecture can be hard to sit through. His test can be hard, but he allow point recovery on all quizzes and midterm. Doing his point recovery on every test allow to get point back and passing this class. We don't do much in this class. He is a really nice guy and easy to talk too.
He's a good guy with a ton of knowledge. Like others have said, Repka can go off on tangents and details. These tangents make up most of the lecture but not most of the tests. He wants you to understand in a holistic way but there's not enough time to learn everything. Still, he cares and will make sure you understand if you ask. Forgiving guy.
Two papers, two in-class essays, two take-home essays, and two presentations constitute the coursework. You read four books, too. It is easy for an honors course and there's extra credit. The class covers topics ranging from climate change to the social contract theory and is very relevant. Note: grading takes until the end of the semester.
Professor Repka is the best Geology Professor at Saddleback College. He's funny, awesome, and explains everything clearly. Repka deserves to be the department chair of science at Saddleback. Take Repka if you can. I would highly recommend taking his class. Repka wants students to enjoy geology by having the least amount of stress possible.
Repka made me love Geology. Amazing field trips and fascinating lectures. He's a little disorganized, but if you put in the effort, he goes out of his way to make sure you do well. Geology is one of my favorite subjects now!
Repka is an interesting man. I had him for Geology 1 and it was the easiest class I have ever taken. If you read the text book, you can pass the class. If you show up, you will pass. Limited effort is required bc of his insane curve (you have to get below 30% to fail). If you need an easy lab science, this is your best bet. Could put you to sleep.
caring professor that wants you to pass the class with the best grade possible. gave's you the chance to make up your quizzes and your midterm! not a easy grader!
If you have to take a physical science, this is one of the best professors to take it with. Be warned, his classes are lecture heavy. There is no busy work, just make sure you show up. There is a ton to learn from this professor, and he always asks if anyone needs clarification. He made rocks interesting and fun.
This would've been a good class, with a different professor. He is very helpful and nice but super monotone, so its hard to stay awake.
Cool guy at the end of the day but it seems like he never wants to be there. Provides extra credit, but doesn't provide a good experience on an objectively interesting subject matter. Tests and quizzes super difficult and not based on required textbook.
Did not post grades at all during the course. Will go on tangents about specifics we don't need to know about. A plus is that he gives you a chance to regain some points on tests, but be prepared to never see those tests again. Heavy on lectures.
Best Professor ever! I took his Astronomy & Geology Courses. Lectures were easy to follow. He cares about his students. Gives them a choice on what kind of test to take. Offers Extra Credit. Take Professor Repka and you will definitely enjoy his classes. He likes to talk and sometimes he wanders off subject, but it is still very interesting!
The most unorganized teacher ever. We never knew our grades. If you can sit through three hours of him talking about nothing, and can tell the difference between merely identical rocks take this class. He gave us 10 extra points on our midterm for taking so long to grade them but we never got our score anyway. I would not recommend
Space can be an extraordinary thing to learn when you work with this teacher.
I took this class and it was the hardest thing to get through. It was an easy A, he gives 83-100 grades an A, but it was so boring. The Wednesday labs were easy, we got out an hour early almost every time, but I couldn't even bring myself to show up to the Monday lectures. Take him if you want a class to sleep through. Nice guy but the class sucked
Even though I got an A in this class, it was probably the toughest grade I've ever earned. This class was difficult to sit through, the professor would ramble about seemingly nothing, be purposely vague, and throw trick questions at us on quizzes/tests. We never knew our overall grades also, and it took nearly a month for our finals to be graded.
Some boring lectures. get ready. other than that he was prepared but his other teacher or assistant she is awful.
Makes it a super easy class. Hard part is being patient enough to stay through the entire lecture and knowing what the hell lecture is about. Other negatives: slow, sleepy, long pointless stories, unorganized, takes forever to grade, monotone voice, no late work accepted, passive aggressive, and kind of rude. Hell answer your question with another
I love this teacher; he is so passionate about this subject ; I am in the class currently. I agree that the lectures are very hard to sit through because it is 3 hours of lecturing; so yes it is very slow moving and feels like forever so it is hard to stay sometimes but who cares! He makes the class easy and he is super kid and respectful.
If you are into a good mystery this is the teacher for you. Spent the whole semester not knowing my grade in the class, which stressed me out a lot during the semester. Class ended two weeks ago and still do not know what grade I got. There's a lot of long lectures that are hard to stay awake too. His study guides aren't very helpful for the tests.
First time Ive had the hardest tests in my life for most classes I dont have to study hard this one I studied my best but the way the teacher words the answers are like a puzzle with variables and mathematical questions we didnt not learn in the textbook. If you want hard tests and boring lectures sign up for this class.
Funny teacher but in honesty I havent learned anything. There is times he will he having long boring rants which can be funny but it gets old after awhile. His tests are Tricky so you better study hard even then it still will be hard to pass. Do I recommend having him as a teacher no. Sign up for another teacher or class.
This teacher is a mysterious one. I love his lectures but as previous comments his tests make absolutely no comprehension at all. The vocabulary is way above a beginner for astronomy since it is introduction to astronomy. At the same time I believe if he used basic vocabulary used in the actual textbook he told us to study many students will pass.
Repka is a bit of a mixed-bag. While he can be affable & funny, his lectures are unorganized and his grading is not made readily available. He does allow for half the points missed on quizzes and the mid-term to be made up, but his study guides aren't the most useful in preparing for both the mid-term and cumulative final he gives. You must study.
This class was a breeze, even before the switch to online. His lectures are very very boring but he is a nice guy. We didn't have a midterm and just had a weekly quiz up until the final. You have to really try to not pass his class as his curve makes the class much more doable. Overall was one of the easiest A's I've gotten.
I took Prof. Repka during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. He was... not prepared. I understand that everybody had a hard time, but his disorganization went beyond not answering a few emails. He forgot to give us our midterm, didn't make his expectations clear, and on multiple occasions posted things late, like our final or multiple week's classwork.
Do a favor to yourself, do not take this professor. His quizzes are super hard. This class is too advance for someone that is not trying to get a science degree.
Please run away from this teacher. He is nice but he thinks that students are only taking his class. His tests are too conceptual and he tricks students. He tests based on the lectures and also the book which is supplemental. I really regret wasting my time with this professor because I only need a lab class for my business degree!
Kind & friendly, sick drawing skills, great sense of humor. Dry lectures, goes into OT, informative/interesting IF you can maintain focus. Would be great if he used humor in lectures to make the material exciting. Only grades on quizzes/tests that are tricky and based on memorization > understanding, making it unreasonably difficult to earn an A.
Took his class Fall 2020 semester. He was not prepared for online learning at all. Consistently super late in updating the weekly lessons, and stopped updating about 1/2 way through the semester. Only came back the last two weeks of the semester after complete silence to give a final. Didn't answer emails. The quizzes were also very hard.
His lectures are boring, the tests are impossible, and just make it harder than it should. He gives out tests having to identify rocks and minerals. When you put the wrong answers THAT HE TELLS YOU on the test and marks it wrong. He uses the excuse "well you could have googled the answer". Take literally any teacher other than him!
Doesn't give class in an organized manner and goes on tangents. I once overheard him that his lesson planning is writing down the topic on a post-it and talking about it in class. No wonder why the tests are all over the place. Also, people have gotten points taken for having a chemical formula wrong when he was the one to give it to us.
Great guy who knows his stuff.
This professor bases the students' learning solely on lectures where he drones on for an hour and fifteen minutes. He did not put any grades in until NOVEMBER, so no one knew what we had in class, we have a super difficult quiz every week, never did a single actual assignment, and I have not learned anything. He also hasn't finished grading midterm
You will learn a lot. This class only had quizzes and tests, no homework or discussion boards. I liked it and I learned a lot about Earth, the Solar System and everything in between. Highly recommended if you want to broaden your horizons.
All I have to say is I almost fell asleep every class, I had to teach myself everything before the midterm and final, and I just took my final and he still hasn't put in midterm or lab grades.
Every day I had to try so hard not to fall asleep. His lectures were very disorganized and half of what he said was not on the exam. We had a quiz each week and they were incredibly hard. The answers wouldn't be in his lectures at all, just in the book. We got our midterm grades on the day of the final. I do not recommend taking this teacher.
Worst professor I've ever had. You can tell he's a smart guy who tries to be nice, but the class was a complete joke. If you need the class for credit then get ready to teach yourself everything and cram before midterm & final. Doesn't grade anything, "labs" were all wrong and missing pages/info. Great study class tho with easy curve, 83% = A
Professor Repka is a very nice guy with an easy grading curve but this was the most boring class I have ever taken. Every class was monotone lectures going through a slide show. We did maybe 3 labs the whole semester so most of your grade is based on the midterm and final and 3-4 quizzes. I would not recommend this class.
This guy dude. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. Why am I watching 3 hours worth of videos (that aren't even made by him) just for him to quiz us on hypotheticals, stuff that wasn't in the videos, trick questions, etc. I feel like hes lost. Repka is full of despair man... DONT TAKE HIS CLASSES. ESPECIALLY if you're not becoming a scientist.
DO NOT take this class. The Professor is unresponsive over email, does not follow the syllabus even remotely, did not post any study material in preparation for the midterm or final. Lectures are 3 hrs long. He did not post grades for over half the semester. I hate that I have to be this honest but he is completely incompetent instructor.
I took Jim's class for the field study, which has nothing to do with what people complain of, just keep a notebook. But attentive, answers every question, cares about students and even covered for my deficit $ with laundry mat. People probably clash with his more traditional style, you've to pay attention, great if you like history and learning.
This class was not what I had expected! Only tests each week with limited time and hard/confusing questions. None of the notes or videos (just crash course videos) made any sense and did not help with the quizzes. Most of the time he would forget to post the quiz and then would just randomly post it days later. 83% is an A. Do not recommend! Awful!
