Notes are super simple to understand and concise, as is his teaching style; quizzes are beyond easy, midterms and finals are much harder tho...likeable fellow, but a little dull to listen to after the 3rd hour
He's a nice guy for sure, very easy quizzes and notes. If he interacted more with the class it would be nice, it can get a bit dull but over all he really explains everything well and is open for help if you need it.
this teacher is a good one, but a bit borning. He is rally nice in helping his students. A Little bit shy. His exams are not too hard. If you study, you will do find. he is also quite flexible. He is willing to change exam days if it needs. He has good temper. Too much question is not a problem, I mean, he will not get angry if you as too much.
super easy quizzes, midterms, and final. boring lectures but clear and detail notes. take him if u want an A or A+
He is a rather generic teacher with boring lectures and typical attitudes packed with generalized exams. Not particularly intersting but you really can't go wrong with him. If you are looking for a calm and peaceful class he'd be your guy. Otherwise his lectures will bore you to death, haha.
Jim is a great teacher! Though he may be VERY boring at times, he makes up for it by his excellent notes... You just print them off from webct and bring them to class! He doesnt have any assignments, just exams (5 exams - about 10% each). He gives out problem sets for practice and these you should definitely do... Take his class and enjoy chemistry!
A sweetheart--his notes are clear and concise, some people say he's boring, but who cares-- the exams are totally fair. I did so well in his class and I usually suck at chemistry. Don't take Christina Sanchez, Rolke is much better. RECOMMENDED
Very nice professor. He really tries his best to make sure that everyone does well. His exams are very easy if you do his problem sets, and attend his lectures. He has AWESOME hand out notes. He likes the following words: "Essentially", "Basically", "Generally" "...ly" ... ... Some times it is hard to stay awake in class, overall he is very good.
jim is an easy marker and his notes are pretty clear..and he is also really BORING.. i fell asleep couple of times during his class and also missed out alot of his lectures =__="" ( couldn't help it ) but who cares~~~even i can get 90% on acid base i m pretty sure everyone else can do it =D
His solutions are full of errors. He does not know enough math or chemistry to answer studetns' questions. Lacks experience. Sounds like a cartoon character in peter-pan (the guy with the glasses) You won't get an A from this fellow
This guy is somewhat easy-going but lacks experience and knowledge. I suggest students who want to achieve a future success, to take this course with a more sophisticated teacher.
I had Jim for chem 1120 and now again for chem 1220. His notes are crystal clear and they're all you need to know for the course. The book is there for clarification purposes only. Do the problem sets that he assigns and you'll be fine. Show up, pay attention and study! He's one of the better chem profs around... Take his class if you can! ^_^

He is one of best professors I had in langara! Really helpful and clear notes. If you did the quiz he gave and understood it, you will be fine in his class. By the way, this is a really easy course.
Jim is a very helpful teacher, but extremely boring!! He has this thing when he's speaking, always says "K...K ... K" at the end of almost every sentence, very annoying. Exams are pretty easy as long as you study and do his worksheets, you'll do fine.
I had Jim for both chem 1120 and 1220. He was really good and easy in 1120 but not in 1220. He seems like a completely different prof in 1220 - Hard and confusing exams, notes are OK but you have to clarify stuff sometimes. He made the final exam that hard that when I checked my mark, he said he's gonna scale people's marks up... Hmmm..
Jim ROCKS he's the best chem prof in the department I took him for 1120 and 1220 and i think he's teaching style if awesome I dont know what ppl are talking about his tests are NOT hard read the text and do the practice prob and his prob and you will do fine the final was not hard ppl just want marks handed to them it was really easy if you studied
Wow. Unbelievably boring instructor. Bland. Likes demos. Not a very challenging class at all. Just do his problem sets and you'll ace his course. Friendly, A for effort, but painful lectures. Showed us clips of Fight Club, the Simpsons and Star Trek in class for the chemistry applications though!
ya, he is rather boring, but he is so so cute!! as far as i know, he's just started teaching in langara, so, i believe, he will improve quickly! anyway, he is awsome!
i dont know how the term finished but lookin back all i remember is his jokes!!! n demos!!! ... u will do fine as long as u do his handouts n sample problems...
His notes and assignments are great review for the tests! He makes chemistry as fun as it could possibly be.
Jim is a friendly and open Prof. Very approachable. He speaks clearly, and all the notes he uses in class are available online (for his class). If you have learned the material, his exams are easy. He does the best he can with incredibly dull material, and intersperses pop culture clips into his class to liven it up. Great prof.
All notes are online- just print em out and away you go! Jim is so funny and adorably cute in a nerdy sort of way. If you attend lectures and do his study problems you'll be fine. He's almost too nice, and sometimes students take advantage by wasting SO much class time with stupid questions. Recommended for sure!
Awesome prof! Just review his notes and problem sets and you'll do well on his tests. Actually made a three hr night class enjoyable with fun demos and video clips (the mole demo was hilarious). Plus, he's super cute and such a sweetheart; always in a happy mood and willing to help!
HE IS A GREAT TEACHER! IF ONLY YOU FOLLOW HIS NOTES, YOU CANNOT FAIL, AND, WHAT'S MORE IT IS GOOD FOR BUILDING A BETTER FUNDAMENTAL FOR FURTHER CHEMISTRY COURSES!
Good prof, is fun with his star trek/wars stuff. makes it fun. do his practice sheets, dont need text. can get away without attending his classes. read his notes and do his problems and u'll ace. his test are exactly teh same as his examples in slides and practice probs.
very organized
Really like him. Very personable and knowledgeable! Happy to have taken his class :-)
Good lecturer. Excellent notes. Don't need to buy the textbook. He explains things well both in class an in his printed off notes. Has compiled interested clips from Futurama, Red Dwarf and Simpsons to keep us interested in what we're learning about.
His lectures feel like they will go on for hours and hours...He tries to keep you entertained with his futurama/simpsons clips but it just makes you want to leave class earlier...His voice has the same tone making you want to pass out!
Number one chEMISTRY teacher in B.C. Chemistry is a glass of water in his class. If you study his notes and problem sets, for sure you will good marks.
I love his class and all of his notes, but the Simpsons clips I am not amazed at all. In his class, it is very hard to stay awake for he is mono tone. When you pay extra attention in his class, the quizs and tests are very easy.
Although he's your typical instructor, you're guaranteed to be taught well. You'll do well on his exams if you just keep up with his class and do his problem sets. He's very nice and willing to answer your questions. His Simpson/Futurama clips are a plus! I recommend him.
This guy is a great prof. He can be dry at times but really explains the concepts well and only tests what appears on the problem sets and in his notes. I wish I could take another class with him.
Great great great prof! One of the best professor I've ever had... Just do his practice questions, and you will be fine. Always shows entertaining clips whenever he feels the student are already bored. And one note, he is one of an example of a teacher who are willing to help his student the best he can(with your marks also!)!!! such a good prof!
I took both Chem 1120 & 1220 with Jim. Nice guy but I didn't find him helpful. If you want to make your life easier take Chem with him but if you want to learn and get a good grasp of the materials please take it with someone else. Text book is never used. He posts practice questions and most exam questions are based on those.
I was dreading the thought of taking chemistry but Jim made it a breeze. What I find great about Jim is that he is super clear and explains the concepts really well. Just follow the notes, pay attention in class, and do the problem sets and you're sure to get a good mark. He seems like a really sweet guy and the videos he shows are super cute.
Notes are printed and organized, you do all the examples in class. He has funny videos that relate to what he is teaching which makes it better if you get bored. He also does demo lab experiments in class which are super fun. He's a nice guy and the tests are pretty fair to what he is teaching. He provides lots of study questions which help A LOT!
I love Jim. He is the cutest little Chemistry professor and he is really friendly and helpful. His tests are fair and nothing comes as a surprise; do the practice questions and you'll be golden.
Best chemistry prof. in the department. If you want to take a challenging course and actually leave it having learned something, Jim's the man.
Super teacher! He's very good at teaching and has excellent notes. He does in class lab demonstrations which is awesome and fun. He's a really easy marker and has fair tests. I would take him for all my chemistry classes if I could.
Fun and awesome class. His lecture and notes are very helpful! He is friendly and interesting :)
Jim is adorkable in every sense of the word! His nerdy laugh is hilarious and seems to actually enjoy teaching students. He likes to keep the class awake by showing chemistry related clips during his notes. He explains concepts VERY well and is always willing to go the extra mile to help you understand. Jim also does cool demos once a week!
one of the best chem teachers i've had. his notes are concise and clear, and his exams are straight forward. he doesn't do anything on his exams to trick you. a very nice person and tries to keep the class interested by playing funny 2 minute videos about chemistry. he actually cares about the students and tries do his best to help you understand
I love love love this guy. One of the best profs I've had at Langara. He explained the material really well and the lectures were clear and organized. I hate chemistry but his class wasn't so bad.
BeeeeeeSsstt Proff EVER
you don't need to spend about 200 bucks to buy the textbooks 'cuz he barely uses them. he will give us printed notes. and he's quizzes are so easy. And getting A+ only requires to have grades above 90%.
Very boring classes. His voice is monotone and makes you zone out. Not very helpful and not approachable. Seems quite awkward as well.
Jim was great, I'd take him again. He plays awesome little cheezy videos as a quick "break" (futurama clips etc), and you can tell he loves chemistry. He can sometimes be a little flustered when you ask questions, but it's not because he's unapproachable at all. He's great in office hours too, and will help you wherever he can.
Shockingly boring and a very bad lecturer. However, he gives study questions and answers with explanations which makes the class okay to study for. He's not great, but he is very clear on what he expects, which I respect. I recommend him because of this (but only this).
Jim is approachable. He may not be a people person, but that doesn't mean he wont take the time to help students. Dr. House is not approachable. Jim is.
Very nice and very clear about what he expects you to know. His problem sets are very helpful, but note that there's only 1 set per unit. Do them sparingly. He is approachable, but he tends to cut you off in the middle of your question. When you ask a question, be concise and if he doesn't understand it, reword, rephrase and ask it again.
Easy A as long as you do his problem set
Unclear in his explanations , rest are usually from his problem sets except from some surprise questions . He is an average professor 4.5/10
He gives problem sets with answers and his tests are based on those making midterms easy to study for. His lectures are however quite boring. No textbook required. Prints out notes for you but you need to attend class to fill in blanks.
Great professor! Always shows some interesting videos(Simpsons, Futurama, Star Trek) and pictures at the beginning of the lecture or the break. As long as you review your notes seriously and do problem sets given, you can achieve a good mark! Attending class is not mandatory but you need to complete questions on the notes.
Jim/James is a super easy professor. His grading criteria is very clear, 4 midterms, (yes 4), lab portion, and a final. He is an easy marker. His notes are clear and concise but his lectures are one of the most boring lectures I have ever had the misfortune of attending. Plays short clips from shows like Futurama for fun.
Overall Jim was a fine professor. He is clear about what he is teaching in classes His exams are pretty simple and comes from his notes
He is a really nice person and easily explain all the concepts. Definitely recommended.
He is more like a friend than a professor
He's pretty good. Most of the profs aren't that much approachable, but jim is very understanding and doesn't get annoyed no matter how many times you ask the same question. He is clear on what he wants on the exam and tells you how to prepare for it. He's awesome. I would highly recommend him.
good prof. If you're struggling with the material then talk to him in his office hours or after class. He is quite approachable.
If you solve his problem set and come to class regularly then you will be just fine!
Honestly, go to class and take notes and do his problem sets. Test questions are essentially reworded homework questions. He makes it very clear what he wants by assigning the problem sets. He is honestly the top boy of Langara.
Great prof! Show up to class do the problem sets and you're going to do well! Very nice and funny!
He was the most approachable prof for me. He made the course a breeze. His lectures can get a liiiittle boring but I didn't really mind it. I love his notes packages, they are super straightforward and organized; 2 note packages per midterm! It's nice and clean.
i just can say that he is the best !
Jim is one of the best profs I've ever had. He's nice, understanding and kind. He's not a tough marker.. everything about his class is perfect. I only struggled with the lab. If you do problem sets you will be fine.
Jim is a nice professor and will always answer your questions. He provides note packages and practice sets, which are useful for midterms & final exams. His lectures are a little boring but he makes them funny with chemistry memes & videos!
Jim is an awesome professor. He is very structured and clearly outlines what you need to know.I ticked "lots of homework" because his problem sets match what you will see in his tests, so if you want a good mark, do the problem sets. His lectures can be a little dull, but he throws in Simpsons and Futurama clips to combat that.
Jim is a great instructor. His lecture notes are clear and concise. Make sure to DO the practise problems because the midterms and the final exam will look like the practice problem set. His midterms are 50 minutes long, so ensure to increase your speed while doing the practice problems. The textbook was optional.
Notes and problem sets are a perfect reflection of the midterms and final. A little lecture heavy but very informative. The information that will be tested is made clear ahead of time. No surprises on the midterms, what you're taught is what you'll see. Helpful and happy prof that has the students best interest in mind. Definitely recommend!
Jim's pre-recorded lectures are heavy in content but he gives a fair amount of time to get through them before exams. Exams are weighed heavily. His review questions are a perfect reflection of what you'll see on exams, plus he includes a clear answer key. If you put in the work, you'll get a good grade. Would love to have him again as a prof!
Best instructor I have ever met. If you studied only sample questions you will easily get A-. Only Thing is you have to watch his videos on 2x otherwise you wasted so much time. All in all best prof ...
This prof only gives 4 tests and a final so each test is worth 20% and the final is 35%. Lab marks dont really matter for this course and showing up to class isnt worth it because all the lectures are online. You definitely have to show up for labs. During class the prof just briefly goes over the notes and goes into detail on random things.
I found hard to follow his lectures, so I had to self explain the whole coure, but as long as you understand what you are doing and solve the practice exercises you will get a good grade as his exams are exactly the same, not the best instructor but he is ok
His midterms are easy since they are similar to the practice problems. If you do all of the questions on the practice problems, you can get good grades. He is also kind and caring.
Amazing professor. Very kind and caring. Would often let students overstay during labs if it was not completed in the time period given. Tests are almost 1:1 replicas of the practice tests, completing those and understanding how to do the practice problems will guarantee you a good mark on the midterms. Wish more profs were like him.
His lectures are very boring but his tests are very easy. As long as you understand the material and can do the problem sets you will get an A
Jim is a great teacher, and a very generous marker as well. His tests are essentially the exact same as the problem sets, no surprises, no BS. His labs are just as straightforward, and are basically the only homework for the course (aside from practice problems for test prep). Overall very nice guy, definitely take him if you can.
DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEM SETS! They are like 1 to 1 copies of the exams with different variables. lectures were hard to understand without prior chemistry knowledge, but attendance is NOT mandatory. If you only care about your grade, Jim is the goat!
Extremely calming presence. His problem sets are incredibly helpful so all you need to do to study is practice them before your tests.
As long as you do the practice that he gives you, and don't do them the night before the tests, it's an easy A
If you want a stress-free A+ in 1154, take Jim and do the practice problems. W Jim. He is very accommodating and patient in the labs.
Jim's class is an easy A+, his lectures were not great but he is very chill and a nice individual overall. His problem sets are usually pretty much 1-to-1 with his exams.
