hella good teacher...he keeps me interested in the class which keeps me awake at 9am!
He is an interesting teacher, his lectures keep you into the class and the time doesn't drag. In this class, we had 5 novels instead of an actual text, but it worked for the class (social history). I would definately take him again.
Very good teacher. Has a sence of humor and isn't afraid to use it. Reading assignments were pretty boring but in class assigments and discussions were fun. Final assignment is a reasearch paper of your choosing on any 20th century topic, event or person.
Teacher makes sure you know the material. No textbooks for class but reading books will be assigned. Test are comprehensible. No multiple choice. 3 part exams Identifications, 2 paragraphs regarding the books, and 1 essay question. Studying is a must. Questions are clearly answered in class. Overall, this lecture class wasn't all that bad.
Teacher is great at his lectures. Much enthusiasm and interest in his subject. Tests are not multiple choice. 3 part exams that involve comprhensively understanding lectures. 2 papers and 2 exams in the class miss 1 paper and fail the class. Guidelines for passing are simple; go to class, take the tests, and turn in both 5 page papers.
didnt really use the textbook much, just 4 books and reading quizes on them once everyother week...somewhat of a boring teacher, he mixes up his lectures often..one point he'll talk about the 1850s then wiithout notice, hell be lecturing about the 1700s, so notetakings somewhat difficult..wouldnt recommend.. if you have to take him...GOOD LUCK!!
Nice guy, good teacher. Would recommend him and take him again. His100 w/Rose is basically just a discussion group on a few readings and practicing compiling research which must be turned in with a short paper at the end of the semester.
fun good class..
Best professor I have had so far. He is an excellent teacher. He also makes the class feel like story time. For this class, it is important to read the assigned novels and to attend lectures. The exams are based on lecture material.
a fantastic history teacher. whoever says dont take the class either didnt show up and flunked, or just plain flunked. dr. jim rose actually enjoys what he teaches and makes sure that you learn. he is funny and helpful, and keeps the class in line, so you dont have to worry about idiots talking.
Jim is an awesome teacher! One of the best so far. He's actually really interested in history and knows much more than just what he teaches in this class. Highly reccomended. Tests aren't too hard, but READ THE BOOKS! otherwise you WILL fail the quizzes.
I totally dig Dr. Rose. Two thumbs way up! He is really tough - he'll totally work you, but it is worth it. If you pay attention, you come out a way better writer and researcher on the other side.
Excellent professor. There were 5 books to read, and 2 papers to do on 2 of the books of your choice. Don't let this scare you, just keep up with the reading and you will do fine. He is a witty guy who will make you want to attend lecture. I would gladly take another history course if I could have this professor.
Dr. Rose made this a pleasant experience. There were 5 books to read, and 2 papers to do on 2 of the books of your choice. Keep up wtih the reading and you will do fine. No textbook other than the 5 books is also a plus. He is a witty, guy who will make you want to attend lecture.
Jim Rose was amazing. He doesn't take role but you really need to be there to get the notes. He responses to email very quickly and always willing to help. You read 5 books and take quizes which are super easy if you read the book. Only 2 papers based on the books and 3 exams. I would recommend Dr. Rose to anyone.
Very nice man who knows how to lecture! Attendance isn't mandatory, but necessary to do well in the class. 2 papers, 3 midterms, and 4 books to read. I would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Rose starts off pretty boring and he does speak in a monotonous tone, but he is very passionate, and over the semester starts talking about more interesting topics. He outlines every lecture and follows it perfectly. Take good notes, read the books, do the study guides. It's not too heavy. I'd recommend him.
Dr. Rose is a GREAT professor. Midterms and reading quizzes are fairly easy. Midterms cover what he goes over in class, must do reading to pass quizzes books are cheap for his class. must write 2 papers but you can chose when you want to write them. Easy class. Totally recomend
TAKE HIM FOR 100-you will not regret it. I've heard many friends talk about their horrible 100 classes and I am always so thankful. I even told a friend about some of the ways he had us learn and she told her HIST 100 prof who then did those things! He knows how to teach the class which is saying more than most hist profs know how to do.
Dr. Rose was fantastic! Tons of reading, but it was a senior seminar after all. He was a fairly easy grader and told you exactly what he expected. 8 books read in full, 7 book reviews to write and only 6 were graded. You're expected lead discussion only 2 times the entire semester and Dr. Rose was always helpful if you got stuck.
I found this teacher to be very boring. Gives busy work all semester, does not clarify his questions (several trick ?'s). He starts class 5 min before it should and takes role. Mandatory to attend class. Have to complete 100% of assignments or you fail the class. I strongly do not recommend this teacher for any of his classes.
He will challenge you with the library assignments, but is always willing to help and you will be very prepared for research classes when you are finished. Wonderful and passionate professor.
Good class. There is work involved and that bothered some people. Nice professor and wants you to learn. I earned what I learned.
I love Prof. Rose! He's funny, intelligent, and loves what he does. I will definitely be taking him again. yay!
Clear, articulate, helpfull, and funny. You have to do your reading.I would take him again. Great class
Dr. Rose is an amazing teacher! The entire class focused around a research project, and he was there to help students every step of the way. There were 4 library assignments early in the semester that required us to learn how to use the library. I learned how to research and would recommend Dr. Rose to all history majors.
Great Professor! no final except just a regular test which is easy! have to do reading for quizzes but its not hard at all. just bring your laptop so its easier to take notes because he talks the whole time. really funny and teaches the class extremely well. definitely would recommend him!
Great teacher. The books he assigned to read were great and it hardly seemed like work. The weekly readings were completely manageable and the in class discussion was fun and engaging. He'd ask a question and for the next 10-20 mins. we, the students, would talk about it. It was like a book club, but for history buff. Awesome.
This teacher is amazing! I do not suggest him for students wanting an "easy" teacher. He's a hard grader and his tests are all essay based, however, he will interest you with every lecture he does, and you will learn a lot about the subject he is teaching. If you care about your education and what you take away from it, TAKE THIS TEACHER!
I highly recommend this teacher if you care at all about your education. His tests and quizzes are all essay-based, so do your reading! Attendance is a MUST because there is no text book and his tests are based on the lectures he gives in class. There will be work involved with this class, but it is TOTALLY WORTH IT!
One of the best professors I have ever had. I absolutely hate history, but he made it easy. He talks fast, but lets you use laptops to take notes. No textbook, so attendance to lecture is MANDATORY! Don't take the class unless you plan on showing up. I highly recommend him though! P.S. he's a SF 49ers fan.
One of the best professors I've had. There is work involved, and reading. Quiz for every book. Had our class read very interesting books, his lectures are clear. I learned a lot from his class.
By far one of the most helpful professors at Sac State. His class is demanding and he does require a high level of work, but you will get so much out of the class, and be well prepared for 192 and 197. I highly recommend him!
Great Teacher. Very clear. Really SMART!
Got a B- 1st Book Review & never higher than C- the rest (6 graded, 30% total). Office hours didnt help. Always "modified" assignment expectations throughout semester. Attend/Part 35%, 2 Discussions (5% each), Term Paper 20%, and Writing Journal 5%. Rose wants you to dedicate your semester to 192, does not care about your other classes. Avoid :/
Expect to put alot of time and work into the research binder. (which is a semester long project) Dr. Rose is very helpful, welcomes questions, easy to reach via email. Overall a great class.
Was a really bad professor in my opinion..To much work, not helpful at all. Is also very rude as well. Strict grader. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone, just a heads up people!
Prof. rose was easy to understand and went slow enough in his lectures for you to get the main points. He has you read novels instead of a text book and then quizzes you on those but as long as you actually read the book there super easy. two mid terms and a final all the same grade weight and he gives you the essay questions ahead of time.
Professor Rose is a great professor! He is very clear and knows his stuff. His lectures are always interesting. Quiz/Test wise, if you study, you will pass. It's not one of those classes where you can BS, you either know it or you don't. But if you don't, you must not be trying, but he tells you everything!
There's no text book at all. Just 4 books to read with quizzes one them and 1 essay. Exams are super easy. As long as you attend class you'll get an A
Lectures are interesting sometimes. He's a really cool guy. Knows a lot about the subjects. Quizzes based off of reading. 2 midterms and a final based off of lecture notes. 1 paper the entire semester about one of the books assigned. Overall great professor and I definitely recommend him.
I really enjoyed Dr. Rose's class last spring. The workload is above average, but manageable. The class was once a week, three hours. Weekly quizzes, midterm, two papers, and a final exam constitute your grade. You can't miss anything or it's an automatic fail. Strict, but great class. I learned a lot and would take another history class with him!
He's very passionate about history and makes the lectures fun and interesting to learn about. he stops to allow students to ask questions. He goes over the books we read and whats on the midterms as well. its non-cumulative. quizzes and midterms (2 + final) are easy to pass if you read and go to class.
Great teacher. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. He is super clear, but a hard grader. As long as you take notes during lectures and read the books, you'll be good!
I thoroughly enjoyed this class, but if you are a visual or hands on learner, don't take it. He lecutres old school, audibly. You also only have to buy 4 books for History 17B, and they're all less than 10$ to rent from the bookstore! Loved this class and learned a ton!
Dr Rose is really helpful and nice. Lectures only with a outline. Record lectures if you can, everything he says he tests on. You will learn ALOT, he is fair on his exams but make sure you show up and read the books. 2 midterms, final, 1 essay, 11 quizzes(1 drop). He is politically incorrect: the 2nd amendment was not/is not for militia only.
Professor Rose gives great lectures. It was really interesting and he obviously has a lot of passion for history. There are four books you must read for the class and you must do an essay for one of those books. There are also periodic quizzes for those books. One midterm and one final and it is based on the lectures. I enjoyed coming to this class
Knowledgeable professor, very enthusiastic about History. Coursework was not hard but very much required focused time, not a "I'll do it before class" kind of class. You must read the assigned novels to pass the reading quizzes and you must have a good understanding of all main topics as the final exam is a randomized topic.
I received a B in this class. Those library assignments are terrible. The research binder takes up alot of your time so if you are a full time student make sure you take 3 other easy classes because this one will take up the most of your time.
I took Dr. Rose for History 191. We read a ton about labor history. He is fair but tough. Get your reading glasses out and get to work because his classes are loaded with really good books. He is brilliant and passionate about history, specifically labor history. You better be a good writer, he takes no prisoners.
8 quizzes total out of 200 points. He dropped the lowest quiz but doesn't deduct that 200 points which will lower your grade even more. ridiculous class.
Dr. Rose is wonderful--passionate about what he teaches, prepared, funny as hell, and very clear about his (high) expectations. He takes what he does very seriously yet somehow manages to be hilarious at regular intervals as well. Highly recommend this great Prof.
His class was somewhat difficult. If you want to take his class, then be warned you're going to work a lot harder than you think. If you're taking 1-2 difficult classes already. I'd recommend you don't take it unless you have (for example) 2-3 easy classes. That way if you're going full time, 12 or higher, you'll likely have an easier time with him
As a history major, I have never received lower than a "B" on any of my papers. However, no matter how hard I worked, I only received "D" and was put down constantly. It should've been an easy class. It was unnecessary for him to nitpicked. It ended up being very stressful. Avoid this professor. You'll just stress yourself out. I warn you.
I have taken Dr. Rose twice and would do it again! He expects a lot from his students but makes that perfectly clear at the beginning of the semester. As a history major he is an inspiration with his lectures and readings. He does require a lot of reading but everything pertains to class. If you want a professor who knows his material, he's the man
I just want to say as a history major it is hard to find good professors who still really capture the inspiring part of history. That is to say they create the story of history with deeper understanding beyond dates. Yes, you have to do reading, but those talks about the books are the best. Great lectures! Thank you for not using a power point!!!!
It's always a pleasure to take a class where a professor has specialized and since Dr. Rose is a Labor Historian this class was amazing. He had the answers to every question and his lectures were essentially off the top of his head. The books that were assigned were short but poignant and the corresponding papers weren't long but required thought.
Worst Teacher Taken at CSUS. Impossible to get a passing grade on papers and quizzes. Would not recommend this class to anyone.
It was unbelievable. Whatever I did, it never satisfied him and I kept receiving marginal grades. He kept nitpicking little unnecessary details although never pointed to the exact root of the flaws. It did not make any sense. It was a very stressful class. I will never take him again even if my life depended on it. Avoid him at all cost.
Pretty good professor. There were 2 midterms, one final, and one paper (unless you decided to do another paper to get a better grade on it) so that if you bombed one, you wouldn't fail the class. Very picky about what goes in the essays and how they are arranged
I've taken Dr. Rose twice now. 17A and 162. He is seriously the best professor on campus if you take your education seriously. He makes you work for your grade so make sure you do the readings. Dr. Rose is very knowledgeable, organized and clear cut with his lectures. Pay attention, write detailed notes and you'll do great. I've gotten an A in both
Doesn't post lecture notes.
assigns reading every week. if you dont like to read and write--avoid him. lectures are in depth and interesting but he WILL LECTURE FOR A FULL 3 HOURS.
Enjoyed class overall. Testing consists of a midterm and final, essay format. Two required essays along with 5 books that you are required to read as he quizzes on them. No text book. Class is overall difficult unless you are majoring in history. I actually read all of the books, didnt miss a day of class, and still ended up with a C+/B-
Grade is based on 8-10 reading quizzes on 5 books spread throughout the semester, two papers based on the books (you choose which two books), a midterm and final. Both the midterm and final have a writing section, where you write an essay on the spot. He's a tough grader on essays. You have to show you know the material and write well.
Great lecturer. Hard work. Exams are multiple choice + essay. 5 essay prompts on the study guide, 2/5 end up on the exam and you choose your favorite of the 2. Make all the essay outlines with lists of facts ahead of time. There's no emphasis on memorizing dates :) . Must take lecture notes or you won't be able to study! Share notes with friends!
Professor Rose is one of the most organized professors i've ever had, he's very organized with his lectures so you students won't be confused. If you show up to class and take good notes you should pass that class with an A. he assigns 4 books, 12 quizzes (which shouldn't be hard if you read the books) 3 midterms and a final 5 page essay. SUPEREASY
Be prepared to write fast and not understand your notes when studying. All class material is through his lectures, pay attention! No text book. He make you red 4-5 books and quizzes about them. Read thoroughly, I didn't and use sparknotes or any other website, still manage to pass. Make sure to good on essay and do it earlier in the year.
He knows his material. Tough grading papers. You choose to write 1 paper from one of the 4 books needed to read. Quizes from every book. If you want to make sure you get an A on the paper assigment start early so you will have more chances for an A. Midterms and final are in class essays. No book, no slides. Go to class and take notes to pass!
If you go to class and take good notes you will do well in the class. There is no textbook so you litterally won't do good unless you're in class.
Show up to class every day. Take notes and read the books thoroughly. If you put in the effort for this class you will get a good grade out of it. Easy class for a willing student. Enjoyable and informative lectures and Dr. Rose shows he knows exactly what he is talking about. P.S. dont get caught on your phone, that's his pet peeve.
He doesn't require you to get the textbook but he does require you read a few books. Honestly, his class was so interesting. He makes his own lectures that you can only see in class, he doesn't post em online so you are forced to go to class. A real funny guy and he truly does care that you are getting a good education.
Although the work load seems like a lot, Prof. Rose is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is completely honest about how if you don't do the work, you won't pass. His lectures are to the point and informative. He's a genuine guy, and has worked hard to get to where he is. Get ready to read, but some of the books are actually really good
He's tough, but is a nice guy who is good at what he does and wants to make us work for the grade we get (not an easy mix to pull off). I would say be prepared for not so great marks on your first paper/test as every professor's grading standard is different (and he's a hard grader). Fortunately I like history and am somewhat skilled at writing.
Dr. Jose grades hard on the writhing part of the exams and you will have 3 exams. Each exam has 2 parts.
Your read several books in this class so be prepared to take a quiz on everyone of them. His lectures are disorganized. He literally has one silde for his whole lecture which is just an outline of what points hes going to hit. Hence this makes his lectures very dry and boring. He forgets its an intro class so expect a poor grade
He is really nice and is a cool person my only issues is the midterms and lectures get boring
Dr Rose is a very knowledgeable and cool guy. He's very polite and approachable. His teaching style may not be for everyone, but he's very clear and coherent in his lectures. No textbook, but weekly quizzes on reading from the 4 books he has assigned. He grades hard on essays. He is a very funny guy and has a vendetta against squirrels.
JUST PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS AND YOU WON'T FAIL!!!! DR. ROSE WAS SUCH A COOL GUY AND MY FAVORITE TEACHER TO BE HONEST HE'S A BRO HONESTLY DO GOOD ON THE FIRST 3 READING QUIZZES AND IF YOU GET A 9 OR LOWER ON THE REST IT WON'T MATTER TO YOUR GRADE (btw he drops the lowest quiz grade and usually gives free answers on some tests/quizzes) GO JIM ROSE
save yourself the trouble and find someone else to take for history requirements. No powerpoint presentations, no textbook, all based off his own historical knowledge. lectures are all over the place and poorly planned. In fact, there is little to no planning at all in how he plans to lecture
not an easy class in the sense that even trying to get a C will be difficult. Lectures are terrible and you will be left wondering what is going to be on the test. Can't say you weren't warned if you ended up taking his class
Favorite professors so far! 2 midterms and 1 final, none are cumulative!! No text book is needed, but all novels are required. They are super easy reads and quizzes are not hard at all. His lectures are big, but is very understanding and allows for questions and discussions during class openly. Stickler about no phones but overall amazing teacher!
Such a rude and inconsiderate professor. Grades papers VERY hard, and you really only have one the entire semester so it screws you over in the end. Even if you look at the internet to help with your essay he will consider it plagiarism and fail you. Avoid this professor.
Super charismatic guy. Really knows history. gives outlines for each lecture and follows it precisely so studying for exams is very clearcut. Have to read 4 books with reading quizzes, not bad. all of the books were interesting too. There were no papers required for my class, but he offers a 4 page extra credit one up to 50 points. highly recommend
Professor Rose truly wants the best for his students. If you're a disrespectful student or come just to be on your phone all class, take someone else. This professor drives about 2 hours to teach at Sac state every day and tries SO HARD to help students learn the material. I LOVE his stories about his life, he truly is someone you'll remember.
Requires 4 reading books that need to be read. Two written quizzes on each book. 2 essays on whichever book weve read in class. The professor is a tough grader but the work is doable. Zoom lectures are important as they are mentioned for the midterm and final! You really get the effort you put in. If you put on work you can pass with A/B
Four books to read which were very interesting, we must write a paper on either one of the first two and either one of the last two, weekly reading quizzes too. He is a tough grader but he does his best to help us succeed! Love the stories he shares with us about his life, he is someone that you will never forget!
