Dr. Sahlman is an amazing teacher. He can help anybody overcome their fear of public speaking. He will take the time to teach you everything you need to know. You'll also have such a fun time in his class, he's hilarious!

He's such a funny teacher! I had so much fun presenting speeches in his class. He's such an inspiring and positive teacher. I'm so lucky to have had him as my speech teacher. I feel so much confident in doing speeches now.

I think that he is one of the best Speech teachers that we have. He is very very helpful and understanding. Even though he seems to be mean once you are in his class for longer then 2 weeks you will find out that he is cool.

Awsome teacher, very loud, and clear helps u understand whats going on. Walk you though every step of the debate. Teacher stays there tell way in the afternoon, allows you to turn in your homework by the end of the day. He's always there if u have a question.

AWESOME teacher...got a C but that was my fault! teaches well...probably one of the funnest classes to take!

If you get nervous while giving your speech please don't say "i'm sorry" just get through your speech so I can vote for the other team. The class is really easy though you need to do the reading if you want to pass the test.

Dr. Sahlman is a awesome teacher and guy.If you show your work to him he will correct it so you can turn it back in for full credit.He totally understands speech anxiety and will help you.He does give you a good run and does expect you to do the reading.(most of the mid and final are on the reading)If you try and do the work you will get an A.

Super conservative, my class was as well. Don't expect any positive reactins from speeches on more liberal topics. tests laughably hard, its almost ridiculous. class in general is easy enough

I took him over the summer, and he is very entertaining! He makes speech somewhat comfortable for students who are having difficulty with public speaking. I love how he enters the class yelling "GOOD MORNING" to the students and scaring half of the class half to death, haha. Earned a "B" in the class, even though I did very bad on the speeches.

Excellent teacher! He makes the class fun and easy. I took the speech 100 class over the summer and it was Great. All you need to do is four speeches and two tests. I highly recommend him. Ive taken other speech teachers and he is by FAR the best. Good Luck.

This guy is funny man. he has a unique laugh it's hillarious just by itself. He's a good and nice teacher. notes in class are mandatory if you want to pass the midterm and final and theyre all from the book so don't stress it. just study and pay attentions and youll do fine.

best teacher i have ever had. i had his debate class and had to go against him one on one. pretty fun. his class prepares you for real life and analyzing people's arguements. helps you see through the b.s. people try to feed you. take him for speech and debate.

Sahlman is an awesome professor. He knows his stuff, but is very approachable and has his student's needs in mind. His tests are straight from lecture and the reading he assigns. I thought the class was a lot of fun, and i'm far from being a public speaker =]

Sahlman was great! i just took him over the summer for a 5 week class and it flew by. I will say that i am not a fan of public speaking, never have been and never will be..but for the time being, it was manageable for me and i made it out alive.. he was a great instructor i would highly recommend this guy :) super nice and easy going!

i took this class over the summer, it was only five weeks long and went by sooo quick. i learned so much in this course , not just about debate , but how to make wise decisions on everyday bases.i would recommend this to everyone,even to those who are afraid of public speaking.

J. Salhman is a very nice guy and relates to other students well. Home work is summited electroniclly and lecturs are posted on his website. There is not a lot of home work. Salhman will give extra points on a test if it is you get a low score.

Easy class. Tests are hard but because everyone does bad, grades on a generous curve. Debates/class fun and enjoyable. Very nice guy. Cancels class a lot too!! :) If you are taking this class and haven't bought the book yet -- don't! You REALLY don't need it. Everything he wants you to know he puts into powerpoint lectures and gives review sheets.

he is a great teacher and he made class fun, the only thing i would say is that hes not good on giving your grade to you but besides that he is a really great teacher

Great teacher fun class

Super easy. He is nice, but lazy about grading. For example, we wrote feedback for each other's speeches, but never got it back to see what our classmates thought. He misses all the time. We could have been done 2/3 through the semester if he had come every day. He is funny and a fair grader.

I took debate with him and it was fun and a great learning experience. I though debate was going to be hard, but he taught us in a way that made it easier to understand!!

He is smart, funny and engaging. Was excellent at grading assignments and returning them in a timely manner. Was crystal clear and had multiple methods for reminding us of upcoming due dates. He stuck to his syllabus very closely. Very well organized. Extremely professional. Wish more of my instructors were like him.

Took his debate class and his speech class and loved him in both! Passed both MSPCOM 101 and 107 classes with an A. Very down to earth and funny. Great teacher, I have told all my friends to take his classes!

Great speech teacher easy Class for most part just dont procrastinate. Giving the speech might be the hardest but follow the guidelines and u get an A

Mr. Sahlman is awesome! Took his 5 week class. Lecture for the first few days with a few activities ("speed debating" and group activies), then each team (2 ppl) had 2 debates during the last 2 weeks of class. Online quizzes, final, and essay. Overall, fun class :).

If you are nervous about speech class like i was, take this class. There are only 4 speeches required in class,each about 5-7 min long. Speeches are worth 50 pts and outlines worth 50. Do the outlines and do the speeches and you will do fine. Attendance is required as he will drop you on your 4th absence. Other than that, fairly easy and relaxed.

I took debate over the summer and It was probably one of the best classes I ever took. The class is not hard at all you just have to get things submitted on time. The debates were fun and the assignments and final were super easy. I highly recommend taking this class

Great prof. I always found myself enjoying going to night class. You can tell he know what he is talking about. Always some interesting topics being covered. Im a comms major and i would highly recommend taking this class.

I took Public Speaking over the summer and absolutely loved it. I look forward to class. I am by no means a morning person but Sahlman makes the class very fun, high energy, and enjoyable. Show up to class, do the assignments and you will receive a good grade. Easy class. Very fun!

Dr. Sahlman is an amazing teacher! I hate speaking infront of others but Dr. Sahlman makes you feel more comfortable and sometimes the speeches are histarical its hard to get nervous! His quizzes are a bit bothersome but the grading uis with any question you ask. Better to ask questions in person than through email. He is a very busy man. One of the smartest professors at Modesto Junior College.

Seemed very arrogant. No accommodation, no care for students' lives outside of class. He often showed up late. His directions are spelled out very clearly. Serious grader with little extra credit opportunities. Likes to laugh at himself. He is friendly and he helps somewhat, but I don't care to take any more of his classes.

Mr. Sahlman is hilarious. I loved his class, and he is nice and willing to help if you ask to. His lectures were always funny. Not a tough grader, however he has some strict rules.

The class is pretty clear cut. From the beginning the professor states that there will be four speeches that you will have to do. For each speech you have to do an outline. There are quizzes online on each chapter and also what he discusses in class. The quizzes are based on his lectures and the chapter. Do your speech critiques! Final is online.

Jim is a wonderful teacher, his lectures are entertaining and the speeches are simple and easy to get an A.

He is a great teacher in my opinion. He is witty and tries to make it fun. He is strict from the start because he wants students who care to do the work in his class. Virtually no homework except the speeches and studying for the quizzes. Read all the chapters, the book is really easy to understand. Miss more than 2 days & you get dropped.

Easy A as long as you show up to class take notes. quizzez are based off lectures and the readings. speeches are mandatory to pass the class. i was scared of doing speeches and wanted to drop but it wasnt so bad once the first speech is over. He can be funny at times and tells you from the first day of class what is expectedof you to succeed

I took this class during a summer semester and despite that it started at 8 I thoroughly enjoyed this class everyday. I am a pretty extroverted person so this class was not out of my comfort zone, however some students were more shy and he tried his best to reach them. Online quiz on every chapter.

He was clear at the beginning of the semester about the four mandatory speeches to pass the class. He is a great professor, he does a great job in keeping the students attentions in his lectures.

Really nice professor. We had one giant paper we worked bit by bit every week and a 1000 word paper due every week. A lot of work but it is worth it if you are genuinely interested in communication. He's pretty lax grader , makes bad but funny jokes and is big on participation. I accidentally turned in the wrong final, but he let me return it in!

So glad I took his class! He gives great feedback on speeches. Quizzes are based on lecture AND chapter reading. If you do not read you will not do well on the quizzes. No homework besides three outlines for our speeches and one formal critique. You can easily get an A, you just have to put the work in it.

Took his 5 week class over the summer. It's fast paced, so there's no time for slacking. About 3-4 quizzes, an outline and speech each week. Take extensive notes because quizzes are based on his lecture and the book. He's an easy grader when it came to the speeches. Just do not procrastinate! Get your work done early! Overall, great prof.

i am terrified of public speaking but this class was the most amazing class i've had! the environment we had within the class was fun and everyone was there to support each other . the lectures given were very entertaining . at first class seems intimidating but the class is very fun and lively. would definitely take again!!

Took his class over the summer It was GREAT. All the papers were pretty much outlined for you and the whole class was graded though canvas. He prepares you for the speeches and is a pretty easy grader. He converted to E books over this summer so you wont have to pay for a book you wont use, but you will be expected to read about 10- 20 pages/week

Really laid back! Assignments arent hard at all, and is very stiff on when things need to be turned in. He gives plenty of time to do assignments so dont worry and dont procrastinate. Overall very nice teacher, anytime he lectures write down everything because you have weekly or semi weekly quizzes. Anyways I would recommend him!

I was skeptical about Jims class because of his strict class rules but his class was easy. He made the transition to remote learning very easy . Only thing was that he gave the rest of the quizzes along with the final exam available to students a week and 2 days before it was due because of the remote learning transition . But I earned an A !

Dr. Sahlman did a great job of introducing me to public speaking. He was very funny and his lectures were very interesting. You have to give 4 speeches but he prepares you very well for them. The textbook is also free and online and the class is easily passable if you try hard and do the work.

This class like many others moved to remote learning. Professor Sahlman gives great feedback and very clear instructions for each speech. There are 4 speeches total and a quiz every week. His lectures are entertaining he keeps things lite and fun. I would defiantly take him again!

He is such a great teacher and judges nobody at all. You do your speech and then he goes on to the next student no matter what happened during your speech. You could've messed up so bad or went on for too long or went too short but he still will just go to the next student. 4 speeches the whole semester and they are very fun. 100% should take him.

Professor Sahlman is super clear and transparent. The syllabus and the assignments clearly state when things are due as are his email and in-class reminders. Those who miss deadlines only have themselves to blame. Additionally, he is super helpful and entertaining. Definitely a professor you want to take at MJC.

Professor Sahlman is an incredible professor. He really wants you to learn. He is very strict with his assignments as he will give you a zero if you miss a deadline by 1 second. Don't be afraid though, it teaches you to stay on task. He also gives you a lot of time to get ready for your speeches. The thing I struggled with was impromptu speeches.

Professor Sahlman is one of the best instructors Ive had at MJC. He is very clear about expectations and gives ample time to do assignments. Yes, he has a taboo topics list. But I found this to be a good thing so that I didnt have to listen to the same, tired topics that people usually talk about. It was refreshing to hear something new.

Professor Sahlman is the best professor I've had at MJC!!! I would definitely take him again if I needed another course that he taught. He is refreshingly clear on his instructions, very well organized, and is super energetic in class. He has high expectations, but this is college and we're supposed to be adults. Strong lecturer and funny at times. Textbook is only needed for weekly quizzes, which are straightforward. Don't miss one though --- I would've gotten an A if I was aware of the deadlines. Four speeches in total, which I thought were fun (except for the impromptu), but get ready to put some effort into it. Overall, though, it was worth it.

I only Dr. Sahlman for a short while before he had an accident, but he was a really great professor! The speeches weren't super long and it was clear what he was looking for. I took this class over zoom so the nerves weren't so high. After your speech, it's on next person. There are also weekly quizzes from the textbook which is provided.

He went out of his way to provide a safe learning environment, he wasn't too hard just have to take some time on the quizzes and speeches. He gave free reign on the topics of the speeches, and didn't grade hard! Jim was super sweet, and he is very understanding about late work. Trust me and join his office hours if you have any questions!

Professor Salman was good but he does not take any late work even if you have a doctors note so make sure you stay on top of your game. You have to do a few speeches and quizzes but if you miss anything there is no way to remake it. As long as you're on top of your game you will succeed in this class. He was a good teacher overall.

The lectures in class help with quizzes and he provides the textbook pages online. No late work is accepted so be sure to complete everything ahead of time. Practice for your speeches and you should be fine. Make sure to look over the rubric for the assignment do that you make sure you have all the parts.

There is only one essay in this class and that deadline was extended a week. All other written assignments are outlines, not essays. Weeks are given to complete outlines, so missing deadlines is just laziness. Quizzes are open book and have almost a week to complete about 13 multiple choice questions. The syllabus is clear.

Professor Sahlman is clear in his instructions. The syllabus states exactly what is required as do the assignments. He gives ample time to do assignments, provides examples and a Word doc template to help you do the outlines, and is available for office hours and by email to discuss assignments. One of the best professors at MJC.

Sahlman is a nice and easy professor. There are many papers in the class. He is picky on grading them, but they're not hard prompts. Quizzes and optional discussions every week. Along with a semester research project. The work is easy to keep up with and Sahlman is easy to get ahold of.

Professor Sahlman is my favorite professor at MJC! His syllabus and assignments are super clear. He was really helpful during office hours and reviewed drafts of assignments before they were due. I also enjoyed Speech Night which all instructors require students to attend, not just Sahlman. That was posted as a requirement in all COMM 100 section.
