Organized class, structured lectures, medium-hard exams.
Essay exams really tough if you dont know 100% of material
Very good professor, very very hard tests, must know all his material covered
he is very nice and a great lecturer. I recommend him
Very animated lecturer, so his class is entertaining and interesting. Everthing on the test will come from the lecture, if you dont study it'll be tough. If you want to stay awake in class and you're willing to study, then take him.
He is a really good teacher. Makes it interesting, but the tests are really hard.
His lectures are extremely interesting, and his information is very informative. As far as tests go, work hard at regurgitating everything you've learned... you'll retain nothing.
He is a great teacher. Gets real into his lectures. Don't need a book just study your notes and memorize them. Seriously not hard at all
absolutely great prof! his lectures are very interesting and linear/organized... so its easy to study- his tests are essay and short answer but it straight from the lectures. i highly recommend him!!
lectures are easy to follow, but i could never memorize enough info for the essays on his tests... he expects you to know as much about history as he does...not fair!
He is a really good professor. You take a lot of notes and he is real specific about what he puts on his tests. I recommend his class if you like to be challenged.
I took him my freshmen year and vowed to never take history at this university again. It was so hard. This professor is interesting, but makes his tests way too hard. He expects you to write everything he said in class on your essay tests. The essay portion is worth 70% of the test. So study!
Selcraig's a funny man, very smart in history, and his class follows a very strict guideline. Take good notes (show up every day) and you'll do good. His tests are straight out of the notes except for a reading test. Tests are very difficult if you dont take notes and you dont study your ass off.
I took this class my freshman year (1999) and I STILL remember how hard it was. Be prepared to take about 5-8 pages of notes each class and study like you've never studied before. Tests were basically all essay, major points deducted if you miss little details. I was a straight A student my whole life until I got my very first D in this class. Ouch
Prepare to shave off about 10 years of your life studying for his exams and than another 20 taking them. Dude, good luck!!!! His is one that will haunt you forever.
AWESOME TEACHER. Difficult, but I would do it over again in a heartbeat. Very organized, you will always be on track and always know what is expected of you on the tests.

just take notes exactly how he says them, put them in order, and repeat on the test!! fine a buddy in class to switch notes with when u want to skip! also very helpful in office hours and wants you to do well!
He'll get you on those papers. He really likes detail questions for his test. Even if he says it only once, WRITE IT DOWN. Study furvently.
Great professor!
Very interesting, he loves what he does, but difficult at the same time. Take good notes and write down pretty much whatever he says. Oh, and go to class too. Tests are pretty easy if you study your ass off.
He has alot of energy and jumps around alot. The class is difficult but not if you go to class, take good notes, and study like crazy.
This is one of the hardest classes I have taken. I studied more for this class than all my others together. He teaches with a lot of energy and the class is interesting, but its near impossible. Dont take this prof if you are looking for an easy A,B, or even C
Very interesting class. Take really good notes and you will do fine. Tests are directly from the notes, but likes all the detail on the essays for an A.
wants a crazy amount of detail on the essays for the test but he makes class interesting, you really can't miss any class if you expect to do well
if you miss even one class, you missed a lot. his study questions basically tell you to memorize every part of every lecture. he typically gives about 11 essay topics and only 2 will be on the test. although you learn a lot, it is very tedious and takes a lot of time.
This class was a ****. His lectures were clear and very specific but for tests you basically had to memorize every single one. The videos were interesting but this guy was seriously a creepy version of dr. phil. if you dont like to study you ass of dont take him.
I took his class spring 2006 and thought it was REALLY hard. I went to every single class, took great notes, and still failed every single test, not to mention, the class too. he is THE HARDEST history 1320 teacher at texas state. i would not recomend him to anyone. the tests are way to hard for the time given. take some other teacher!!!
Minimal reading required from a book of stories, but NO text required, which might save you some bucks.Clear lectures. He organizes them so that each lecture (which may last one or 2 classes) so each is a potential lecture item. Easy to pass if you memorize everything, and actually study a little. I got a B with next to no effort, and I failed ONE
I took this class on summer II and it was very time consuming. The best thing you can do to pass, is to attend every single class, take excellent notes and memorize all of them for each unit. for the stories make a summary of both ahead of time and memorize those too along with the lectures. it is the only way to make an A...I did.
He's a great teacher! He really knows what he's talking about. The tests can be a challenge because you basically have to memorize EVERYTHING! I went to most of the SI sessions and then studied for a few hours the night before and I did well on the tests. If you study just a little after every class and not wait till the last minute, it's easy.
as long as you're ready to memorize his lectures you're good to go. he's a great teacher but attendance is crucial because his exams are over nothing but his lectures.
memorize the lectures... dont miss class.. and you will do fine. tests are fairly easy as long as you STUDY HARD. the essay portions suck but the fill in the blank is not so bad. i didnt like him, personally, seemed a little arrogant, but he'e not the worst prof...
Memorize EVERYTHING that he lectures on, he expects you to know every single little detail that he has said in class! Go to class or you are pretty much screwed!
As long as you go to class, take notes, and study there is absolutely no reason not to earn an A in his class. His tests are about 20 fill in the bland and then an essay that needs to be about 4-5 pages. But, the first day of class he gives you all the possible essay questions for each test. So just study and prepare yourself and you will do fine.
If your taking history take him. It's importatnt that you show up to class b/c the tests are essays straight from his lectures. If you take good notes and study them there's no reason you shouldn't get an "A" or "B"
This class will be an easy A as long as you take GOOD NOTES. It is complete memorization... and all you have to do is regurgitate the info onto the essay. So far i've gotten 100's on all the exams.
I really liked him. He made the lectures interesting and was enthusiastic.
Interesting professor. Has some unique takes on history which don't always seem on the mark, but what's on the tests is all factual. You'll want to show up to class every day, take good notes, and be prepared to know the material cold before showing up for a test. He's not easy, but he is fair.
never miss a class day unless you want to get boned on an exam. take notes on everything. memorize your notes. take exams.
I had Selcraig in the Texas History Survey class. It was a good class, and I learned alot, but his tests are obviously made to be difficult and deceptive, and my AWESOME paper recieved a C, and it deserved an A, and I don't care who you are, it was an A paper. He's a jerk, and he's hard, so if you've got a 4.0, keep it by not taking his class.
While his lectures are very straightforward and easy to understand, his assignments and tests are exceedingly difficult. He gives you a rubric for how to compose the writing assignments, but when the assignments are graded, even the most minor of problems are greatly amplified resulting in a much lower grade. His tests are rather ambiguos as well.
If you are incapable of memorizing lectures exact word for exact word then do yourself a favor and take a different class. Missing one minor detail that is hugely unimportant in the grand scheme of history could earn you a failing grade.
If you can pay attention to a lectures...take a lot of notes...memorize every detail of it you should be alright. I got a 32 on the first test and a 50 on my first paper because I just wasn't ready for his attention to detail. But I brought my next test up to an 83 and my final up to a 94 which gave me a C...don't make my mistake.be prepared!
My advice to anyone looking to take this class is to review your lecture notes weekly. He's a good professor but he demands accuracy and extreme detail on tests. You must attend class-the tests are lecture based. Good news, he doesn't require a lot of busy work or Very Many out of class essays, just study your notes and you'll do fine!
selcraig's lectures are very interesting and entertaining, but the tests are very hard. take extremely good notes and memorize. details are crucial in tests.
I am just finishing the semester in this class. He is very interesting, but as everyone else said, you have to know a lot of material on test days. My suggestion is take the time to memorize the outlines. People that complain about Selcraig are the ones not putting in the effort.
I really liked him! History is usually one of my least favorite subjects but he makes it interesting. Yes you have to study your lecture notes to do well on the test, but there is no textbook reading at all! I would take him again if I had to!
I counted the number of times he said "once again" throughout one lecture, 76. He makes history intresting, and clarifies common misconceptions, tests can be tricky, accompanied by a lot of writing. Personally I enjoyed this class, it made me study and work hard, but grading was fair and the material was interesting
great prof, he really knows his material. great personality! i absolutely hate history but he made it interesting, fun, and actually made me want to come to class. his tests are kinda hard and writing intensive. make sure you study the notes at least once a week. go to class everyday and take good notes, attendance isnt mandatory but its beneficial
Selcraig is a great prof. There is no text book bc it's all lecture. To make an A on a test you must study 10 plus hours. He is very organized. It's an interesting class but i'm taking my 2nd history at my community college!!!
Even though it isnt mandatory to attend class, i advise you to. All his test are based purely on his notes. Write everything he says (which are the notes) and study them for tests, you'll be good to go.
He is extremely knowledgeable and can teach you anything and everything about history but you just have to listen. The tests are hard but you can make an A or B if you just go to class and STUDY like crazy a few days prior to the test! The class is BORING but he's witty and whistles a lot! If you want to learn and work hard then take him!
Though attendance is not mandatory, EVERY question on his essay exams comes from his lecutres. Write down EVERYTHING! Exams are usually a few short answer and mostly essay. A very animated man, he makes history AWESOME to learn and is occationally funny, I was truly educated. He also understands that some students do have extenuating circumatances
Though class is not mandatory, EVERYTHING from his lectures is on the test. Tests usually consist of a few short answer, but majority essay (and they're LONG). A very animanted man, he's occationally funny. I truly recieved an eduction from him. He also understands that sometimes students have extenuating circumstances, but asks for proof.
this old fool cant teach a class if his life depended on it. makes unfunny jokes the whole time and has a vocal tic where he repeats the phrase "once again". Very annoying. Other than that the main downside to the class is having to buy a paperback book for his one and only essay test. Meh, I would take someone else
You must know how to STUDY very well if you take Selcraig. He is an extremely smart man, he knows everything about history. However, his tests are hella hard if you don't take thorough notes or don't study enough. You essentially write an entire lecture in essay form for your tests, and you dont know which lecture he will pick.
Problem i had with him is he was kinda biased in presenting some of his views on history. He has a his way or the highway kind of style & would discredit things students said they learned in other classes about certain subjects.
Prof Huber is a great teacher-very knowledgable and teaches some great lectures. His tests are stricly lecture based, so in a way attendance is mandatory. Don't text in class!
Really Hard class requires slaving over notes and lecture
He knows his history but the tests are so hard and there was tests every other week and on mondays! so you had to study your butt off the whole weekend. the tests are mainly essay and he gives you like 9 essay topics for you to learn and then randomly picks 1 or 2 of them for the test! to pass you have to study your ass off. dont recommend at all.
He definitely loves teaching history and is great at it too.His lecture is easy to follow, but you must copy down all that he says to pass the tests. His tests are very difficult, he expects your essay to contain very specific detail. If you are a history major I would recommend him, but beware, his class is hard.
He makes too many annoying noises to pay attention to and his tests are way too hard for the undergraduate level. Horrible teacher, do not take this class!
it was a really hard class especially since i always had coaches as my teachers evreybody told me not to take history here but i did and ended up having to drop it test were way 2 hard even if u studied a week for them and i still managed to fail
DO NOT TAKE SELCRAIG! class started off as over 100 students and is currently less than 30. the tests are sooo hard. there is way too much information to learn. he does not give extra credit or curve grades. you have to study your butt off just to get a low C. save your $$$... do not take him!
tests are way too hard. to do well you must memorize 20 pages of notes for each of the 4 tests. Knowing the simple gist wont do you anything. each test has an essay that is over one of the 8 or so subtopics that make up the notes. he is the only hist teacher at texas state that does tell you which topic your essay is on. selcraig = 8x more studying
oh my goodness! this class was insanely hard! you must take 15-20 pages of notes and try to memorize everthing for a topic you do not know. His notes are very good, but trying to memorize everything is excruciating!! i used to love history, but struggling through this class made me like it less.
took his tx hist class. tests are too hard. DONT WASTE YOUR $ BY TAKING SELCRAIG.
Professor Selcraig's class is an extremely hard course. Only because it requires A LOT of studying, and a lot of time. Professor Selcraig is a great teacher, he knows absolutely everything about history. If you want an A, study study STUDY. Talk to your IA, they're VERY helpful. They are the ones grading your test. Talk to Selcraig as well.
Great professor...gives you all the information but you MUST STUDY inorder to pass. talk to IA and SI for more help....he is also helpful to talk to.
I learned sooo much from him about Tx history. Interesting class but you must study very hard. For his tests he picks on lecture out of the 9 or so and you have to write it in an essay. You will need to study atleast 10 hours for it. If you study the lectures you will be fine!
his class was probably the hardest class i have ever taken. He expects you to memorize every detail of the notes from class, which is practically impossible if you have other classes at the same time. i do NOT recommend him for a professor.
First off, don't take this class. Not only are the tests insanely hard, but you have to study 24/7 just to barely pass. I personally did not like Prof. Selcraig because he presented a very narrow view of history.
although this class isn't a blow off breeze, once you get a routine down for studying it is very easy to get a good grade. if you aren't good at writing essays and being thorough with explanations, it may be harder. however, his lectures are very organized and easy to follow. i loved this class because he doesn't make you memorize useless facts
Leaves out HUGE gaps. Said only Germany, UK, France,& US involved in WW1. When questioned said, "I'm only here to teach American History." He only teaches info of history that we were involved in. Left out all the people Stalin killed; said Hitler invades the Chez only because they were neighboring countries. Get the credit and move on class.
ay, straight up... all you have to do to pass is show up to class and write down everything he says. then for the test, write down everything he said. its not hard if you know how to take notes. if you're lazy, take someone else. he made history kinda interesting for someone who gets bored easily. he's a cute little guy too. :)
People, you're in college not high school. He gives out the study questions the first day--read them. Stop complaining he doesn't tell you what essay questions will be on the test--DUH! Read your notes--tests are challenging but not that hard if you, ya know, STUDY.
selcraig is a great teacher. very passionate and educated. people complain about his tests but as long as you take good notes and study all of them you'll do fine. I got an A+ in there. I took online history this past semester and it was all textbook reading and I did terrible. Selcraig is all lecture based and explains everything very clearly
Awesome class in my opinion. Show up, take notes, spit it back out on the test, repeat all semester. Granted it's not as easy as it sounds because there is alot of info but I thoroughly enjoyed the class and even as a history major learned a thing or two. I strongly recommend this class to anyone who enjoys college level classes
Seriously... Unless you have no interest in unbiased teaching don't take this class. He is a jerk.. and skips over anything that makes his views less popular and over exaggerates the side he disagrees with. He isn't clear on what to study for the test you will basically need to memorize every note you take in order to do good on the tests.Big mista
I laugh at every comment left by those who took his 1300 level classes. If you're like the people using text speak (2 for to) in most of these comments be prepared to meet your maker if you take Selcraig. In his upper division courses he is very holistic and chooses AWESOME books to read on the period. One over the MyLai massacre left me in tears
I found his teaching to be more lively and interesting than most other teachers and I enjoy his lessons but his tests are very hard. If you are a History major than you'l probably like this class but if you're not a major and you're hoping to just pass and get it over with than you should stay far away from this class.
Great lecturer that will keep the class interested. He moves very fast and starts exactly when class is supposed to. When he starts he remains on topic, focused, and adds side stories/comments to keep you listening. Not a class to skip at all and test are a load to study for, but in retrospect I'm very glad I took this class and I came out with a B.
Easily the best professor I've ever had.
Attendance is mandatory. He gives very detailed notes, does not use a textbook. His class is difficult but if you go to class everyday and bring a computer to type word for word what he says, it's not too bad. He is very helpful in answering questions. Tests are half essay, but every history class at TXSTATE is writing intensive.
He's an ass and class sucks. Your basically just copying the notes that are on the elmo and listening to him babel. Thought the class would be easy because all you had to do was memorize his notes but my memorization was never enough. His tests are fill in the blank and essay. His essay is a random 1-2 out of 8 so you have to memorize all 8!!
A very difficult class. Professor Selcraig expects a lot from students. To do well in the course you must memorize a vast amount of information and be prepared to write many pages on it for exams. I received an A in the course but it required a lot of study.
Hardest, ever. His undergrad class is more masters level. Attendance is not necessary, but is vital to passing the class. NO textbook, NO online website, NO notes, only names and dates which he talks about for the entire 80 min. You're expected to memorize your notes and be prepared to write a 5 page essay over 1 of the 10 study questions AND he g
Professor is interesting in class if you are a five year old. Information given was biased, and essay was graded off of information given in lecture ONLY (no additional information if you knew it). Absolutely horrible class. No textbook to use as alternate source of information.
Selcraig's lectures consist of a lot of stopping around, shouting, and over-exaggerating to get his point across. He also has a habit of saying 'in any case' a lot. (I notice these things) His tests are fill in the blank/essay and for that reason you HAVE to go to every class or get someone's notes. If do actually do that, the class isn't bad.
Super enthusiastic prof but the tests are hard and graded harder. Write down everything he says in lecture (I got points off for not including the most minute details on essays..) and never miss class if you can. If you start memorizing your notes a few days before a test you should get an A.
Class is hard, All tests are essay formate with a few fill in the blank style answers. The tests are hard but he gives you all the information in class. WRITE DOWN EVERYThiNG! even if he says it's extra info, if you can remember it & add it in your essay it will count for something. He's really enthusiastic & fun to listen to in class.
To pass this class, you have to attend everyday. All tests are based on lectures. There are 6-8 prompts. One will be chosen; you won't know until test day. Remember all details. Be able to spell. Attend everyday. Outside reading is required as well. Questions come out of the book, too. Your last two exams require a summary from 1 of 3 chapters.
If you pay attention in class, take good notes, study hard for the tests and prepare an essay outline for each possible prompt then you can make an A on his tests. You cannot miss any classes because each of his lectures are very important and you will be tested over each days material. His info is simple and clear & he is a great energetic teacher
Out of all the questions he could have asked for the time period of WW1, he asked who invented Coke. No matter how correct you are in your essay on your tests, if you miss the most minute detail, you're sure to fail the test. I made an A in history 1310 with another prof, I don't know how this class will turn out.
the tests are RIDICULOUS i have studdied so hard and failed every single one. Each of his tests have at least one essay question, in other words.. DONT TAKE HIM
I love his class! I hated history in high school and he mae me love this course. the tests are really hard but if you go to class, take notes, and study you will be fine! he is really good at teaching this stuff and being inthusiastic at what he is teaching, i was never bored or falling asleep in this class. TAKE HIM!
Fantastic teacher, makes learning the material very interesting. His tests are hard and require a lot of studying over specific details. He offers lots of opportunities to get extra help.
AMAZING! I know our history wayyy more in depth thanks to Selcraig. No attendance but you must attend in order to get the notes. Also, you must study alot and write well. Dont expect to mess around and be pass with a C. just go to class and study well and you'll be golden.
Selcraig is VERY enthusiastic about his subject! He makes the class interesting but be warned, you must attend class. His tests are straight from the lectures and he includes the most innate details. Go to class, take very detailed notes, study, and attend the SI sessions. If you aren't prepared to work hard, you will fail.
I really enjoyed going to class but his tests are way, way, way to hard! Requires extreme details. Good luck if u take him. I wouldn't recommend him for upper level HIST courses
Overall, he was a very enthusiastic professor. All of his exams are short answer/essay based. For the essays, rather than testing on your overall knowledge, the essay requires you to remember every detail from the lecture. So, if you missed a few miniscule details, expect to get 20 points off.
Dr. Selcraig is SUPER enthusiatic which is awesome. I study two days before the test, it is all about memorizing your notes so if you cannot take good notes, or memorize well then he will be super difficult. But if you are like me and show up everyday, take detailed notes and give yourself two nights ahead to really memorize the material, its cake.
You MUST attend class if you want an A. It is entirely based off of lecture. You have to know the material like the back of your hand. It's a really challenging class simply because he makes you memorize so much. It borders on a ridiculous amount of info, but he's super enthusiastic and will get you into it if you don't like history.
He is an amazing teacher! He is enthusiastic about the information and keeps you awake and into it! The test are extreamly hard though! Go to class and take good notes and study a lot! His class is my favorite class and I use to hate history! I highly recomend his class!
Great class. Lecture thru Elmo - all you need to learn for tests will be on the screen. Lecture by topics, you will need to get it back into chronological line for exam/test.
I loved Dr. Selcraig's class! He truly cares about what he teaches. Be prepared starting now that there will be a lot of writing. His class is intensive writing so DO NOT simply copy just from the screen, he expects everything to be repeated from his lectures. Never guess what outline he's going to use just study everything.
No attendance but you need to go to class for the notes. My favorite part was being able to type my notes so I could add all the little details. This isn't a mess around and get a C kind of class. You need to show up!
He is an AMAZING teacher. It is a lot of information to retain but if you go to class and take notes you will be fine. I'm a B average student and I made high A's on all the tests with only studying the night before. He is so enthusiastic and does a great job at keeping your attention. I wish I could take him for more classes. LOVE HIM
Selcraig is FANTASTIC. He likes to stomp around, yell and shake his fists and get really into the subject matter and it makes his class super fun. His tests are extremely difficult but not unmanageable if you study. GO TO THE SI SESSIONS! They saved my grade. Overall, I definitely recommend him.
He is an excellent, dedicated professor. His lectures are designed to help you write the essays verbatim.
By far the WORST professor I've ever taken. HAVE to go to class because all tests are from lecture. BUT you can't even type all the things he says because he talks WAY too fast and WON"T repeat himself.Tests include random information never mentioned in lecture. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Take online or other ways. I have never had this BAD of a professor.
Hard but helpful
Amazing professor. He is so organized and his lectures are fun and interesting. YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. There is no textbook, there are no PowerPoints online, you have to take notes from what he says. You can do it though. I got an 85 on the first test, and a 100 on the second. My advice, learn the outlines so that you don't miss any topic.
Selcraig makes his classes very interesting and I HATE the History classes at TxSt. He's tough, but if you really try to memorize your notes, you'll do well on the test. Also, don't mess around in class... he's scary when he's mad!
Selcraig is an AMAZING professor. I hated history before his class, and was fearful of the outcome of my grade, but I finished with a B. He tells history as a story, so it helps students connect the dots and remember things. The only textbook used is the one you have to have for a test over the book. All notes are from lecture.
He is very difficult and his lectures are long. He is very organized and expects you to be too. No textbook, just what is covered in class, so try not to miss. I made all A's on the tests but made a B on the 15 page paper and made a B in the class. Tough grader.
You would need a math major to calculate this guy's level of narcissism. Regardless of who or where you took history before him, he will tell you at least once a class that they were stupid. His exams are based entirely from his lectures. Fair is fair, but this guy is ridiculous. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
If you don't attend you will miss valuable information for the exam. Every long lecture he says in class, he randomly picks a lecture, and expects you to repeat it to him in his exam. He wants spelling to be correct, first and last names, perfect dates. Although he is passionate about what he teaches, I would not take his class again.
This guy is narrow minded, uncooperative and downright disrespectful to his students. His lectures are hard to follow because of his sloppy way of constructing sentences due to the fact that he's literally just reading off his outline, and his tests revolve around memorization rather than comprehension or synthesis.
You should really take him. He is the BEST professor i HAVE EVER TAKEN. I made an A+ but it was not easy. All the test essay questions are in his syllabus but he picks only 1 each test. All the test answers are given during lecture notes. To pass this class, all you have to do is: come to class, take very detailed notes, and study before tests. :)
He isn't a very good professor. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about him being so AMAZING. His test are mostly essay based. Granted he does give you the essays before hand for you to study but the way his lectures are it is difficult to take notes. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
Took this class in the summer. Started with 25, ended with 12. Recipe for getting an A: Write down or type every word that Dr Selcraig says in the lectures. Just writing the outline notes won't cut it. Study the day's lecture every evening until memorized. Do not skimp! Also, start on the writing assignments immediately! Have fun!
Honestly one of my favorite classes. Selcraig was energetic and knew his stuff. The lectures were interesting, organized and flowed. His tests were easy, because he just makes you spit back one of his lectures in essay format. Would take him again.
Mr selcraig isnt that tough but you must study and take good notes. His test are fill in the blank and he has muktiple essay questions at the end. Doesnt give extra assignment s and as far as i know no extra credit. His lectures caan sometimes be interesting becuase he tries to get you involved but overall its still a boring class.
Must be able to write the two in-class essay's, one short and one long, for the test in chronological order.
I loved his lectures, they were funny, and informational, but his tests were incredibly difficult no matter how much I studied, I couldn't bring my grade up.
His tests are the hardest tests I've ever taken! While Dr. Selcraig is passionate about history and tries to make lectures interesting, it is still a very hard class. You have to memorize his lectures verbatim or you will fail. Tests are fill in the blank and essay. If you do not memorize all the information from all the lectures you will fail.
He is really energetic in lecture which really helps a lot. All of his tests are completely open response with a 3 page essay. The tests are kind of hard but as long as you basically memorize your notes, you're golden! He's very helpful and he wants you to KNOW the information. I really enjoyed him and would recommend him.
I have had a long academic career; his tests are the hardest tests I have ever had in my life. He gives you 11 possible essays and picks two for you to do out of those. His notes and lectures are course level, but what he grades on is way above and beyond the information you are given to study with. By far the most ridiculous thing I have seen.
I love Selcraig his class was amazing! he was very energetic and makes his lectures interesting. His tests require you to spitback his lectures at him in an essay along with some simple questions that you need to answer. I wish i hadn't already taken 1320 or I would have taken it with him. I got a super high A in the class and going to miss him.
He literally screamed at a student while standing just a few inches from his face. I could not believe what I was seeing, it had to be the most unprofessional behavior I had ever seen from a professor. Of course it made him a very unapproachable person to say the least. He is very animated (nuts), and a hard grader. Avoid taking his class!
I don't know why everyone on this is complaining because as long as you went to class and wrote down what he said basically word for word you were fine. You did have to memorize basically all your notes to get a good grade on the test but honestly I just studied the night before and memorized everything and I was fine. He's also willing to help!
He is the best professor I have had at Texas State. I highly recommend him, but be prepared to study.
He is incredibly well organized and funny. Unfortunately he demands that you know your history in depth. He will give you advanced essay prompts, for every test you must do the one self reading chapter and one lecture essay, no alternatives. Also no multiple choice, all fill in the blank. you may have to memorize 200 items and recall 20 in order.
At first I thought I would have to drop this class because the tests are tough. But, if you study really well, you will be fine. You have to memorize every lecture pretty much but if you go to class every day and write down what he says, you'll be fine. He tries to make lectures interesting which is good. Study a week before the test to do well.
It's a university. If you are looking for an easy A, go to community college. Selcraig is a fantastic lecturer who lays out his expectations at the beginning of the year. Study the study questions, GO TO CLASS, and seek help from the SI and YOU WILL PASS with flying colors. You get the grade you deserve. It's just recalling lecture from memory.
this is my 2nd time having selcraig. His lectures are interesting and he is full of energy even at 5pm. His tests are hard but are just you recalling every lecture. The books are interesting and help give more look at different parts of social history. One of my favorite classes but you have to work to get the A.
He only has four test, but they're tough. 18 fill in the blank, with an essay or two at the end (only a page or two long) his class is all memorization and structure. He basically writes the essay's for you, you just have to study the order. Very possible to get an A, just takes a lot of studying.
Memorize every term and every lecture!! Study at least 8-9 days before test for an A!
His lectures are very organized and detailed. He will clarify if you're unsure of something. You need one book to read for the final paper. Do NOT wait to the last minute to do the paper. You must take notes and pay attention in order to pass the tests. The tests have three sections: short answer, short essay, and long essay.
I had him for Texas History and I have seen other reviews give him poor remarks but he does a good job. I made a B in his course, there was no textbook all his material is covered in his lectures and they are very well organized, tests are ID's and 1 or 2 essays, He covers everything in the syllabus and always answers questions you ask.
The WORST class I've taken at TXST in 2 years!!! extremely difficult and that is a lot coming from me! You have to memorize ALL of your notes, and that is 10+ pages typed. Every. Single. Detail. and I mean every single one... I had a D all semester and brought it to a B with the final by some miracle. Don't take unless you absolutely have to.
Did not like this dude at all. Total hack. Perfectionist, unapproachable, irritable when you ask him simple questions, doesn't seem to view students as more than just numbers on the roster. Lectures are overkill, notes if typed can go up to 10+ pages for one unit, and everything is "in the syllabus" (not).
Horrible professor. Definitely a revisionist 'historian', and I use that title lightly. Has an agenda and requires you to know 100% of the material and then you might get a B. Avoid this unprofessional buffoon at all costs.
I learned so much from taking this class. However, his lectures were detailed and long in some cases. In order to get a good grade, you'll have to basically memorize your notes and write them on the blue book. Memorize your notes and them by heart!!
He is passionate about history & makes you interested, regardless of whether it's your major or not. This is the only history prof I've taken that I've ACTUALLY enjoyed having. It's going to be tough, but this is college, what do you expect?? You really have to work for an A. But I got mine & I am by no means a straight-A student.
Tests are essays. Make sure you're there in class and write everything he says word for word! Its all going to be on the test. If you pay attention and regurgitate everything he says into an essay, you will pass with an A+
You only have 3 grades all semester and they are all test, so don't screw the up. He can be very stingy but knows the material very well. not laid back at all!
His lectures are good, but the essay portion of the tests isn't really clear on what he's looking for. He can be kind of rude if he thinks your question is stupid which is a little discouraging.
He is a tough grader and is completely lecture based. He is very passionate about history, he makes you actually learn the material and makes you work for the grade you want. With that said he also cares a lot about making sure everyone has the material and help they need. Don't just read over your notes, LEARN the material and you should be okay!!
Selcraig is passionate about History, so he is a good professor, however he grades exactly off of what he teaches. During essays you have to spit back what he taught during lecture in order to receive any credit.
I skipped class and didn't pass. His class should be taken seriously and if you do that then you will pass. He is a very nice guy and will love to help you.
Definitely loves what he teaches; he's very charismatic & likes to throw in sound effects while he teaches, at first i thought it was super dorky but it actually helped me remember those parts of the lecture. definitely take him seriously when he says the exams are lecture-based. GO TO CLASS. MEMORIZE THE ORDER OF HIS LECTURES. READ THE BOOK.
I had Selcraig for 1310 (received a B) and 1320 (received an A). Dr. Selcraig is an amazing lecturer, but you have to pay attention and write down everything. His test are simple because you just have to spit one of his lectures back at him in an essay. I would recommend to everyone.
Don't take him! Horrible experience.
Selgraig is a great professor and you will learn everything you need to know in order to pass bis class. he has 3 test and and exam. for the exam it just like one of his other test but worth 50% and an take home essay is worth the other 50%. MEMORIZE YOUR NOTES WORD FOR WORD. i made the mistake and got a 38 on 1st test. 89-2nd 97-3rd 99-exam.
For exams-memorize your lectures word for word and you will get an A. The final was not cumulative for me, and half of it was a take home essay over a short book. This class is good if you have good memorization and will go to class. Do not take if you are looking for an easy A.
To get an A: memorize your notes word for word. There will be about 12-18 pages of notes to memorize before an exam. If you do this, you will pass. That's basically all there is to it. One take home essay that's easy. It's hard until you know what to do! So listen to me!!!
This man makes this class way harder than it needs to be. I do have to admit he knows what he's talking about. He is very knowledgeable about US History and that's great. His teaching format is lecture based. Memorize your notes EXACTLY and you'll pass but that way of teaching isn't for everybody. No HW/Quizzes. 4 tests and an Essay + Final Grade.
Dr. Selcraig is my favorite professor at Texas State. His classes are challenging, but you will learn more in his classes than any other history class at Texas State. He usually assigns two books and three non-cumulative tests. If you are a history major that wants to know more than the average history major, you should take his class.
Horrible teacher. Required us to write a 14 page family history paper and graded them poorly if our families were not interesting enough. Even if you memorize the notes word for word, you still wont receive an a or b on any exam. Don't bother going to his grader for help either because that is a huge waste of time. Also hollers in class.
This is the hardest class I've taken. He gives you 12-17 lectures for each unit and expects you to memorize all of them word for word. For the exams he will ask you to write down one of his lectures in correct order, word for word. If you miss information, spell something wrong, or get it out of order, you get points taken off.
If you are good at memorization take this prof. He gives lectures and on the exam you will need to regurgitate every single thing back in essay format. I have a fairly easy time memorizing things, so this class was a great experience.
Dr. Selcraig is an amazing professor and you can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. He doesn't post anything online so it is important to go to class and write everything down. It is a writing extensive class but he is a pretty easy teacher. Study your notes and you'll definitely pass his tests they are essay and fill in the blank.
He gives 4 tests each is basically the same. each test is 40% fill in the blank and the other 60% is an essay over one lecture and you have to get every single thing he talks about. just go to class and take good notes and then review your notes over and over and you'll make a good grade. if you an A then go to the SI sessions which are study sess
Lecture based. Used flash cards to pass, got a C bc I wasn't as committed to this class as I shouldve been. He's very blunt & smart, so I can see why some ppl are saying he isn't that approachable. Just don't use your phone/sleep in class &you'll easily avoid his angry side. Liked that I didn't have to buy a textbook. Dont procrastinate on studying
3372 was the 3rd class I have taken with Selcraig. His classes/tests are tough, but you will learn what you're taking the class to learn. Always brings an interesting dynamic to the lectures and loves to bust myths. If you're looking for an easy class, not for you, if you're looking to learn and be challenged, highly recommend.
He is a tough grader and very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He expects you to remember every single detail he tells you. Nothing can be spelled wrong in or in the wrong order. He cares that you learn the right thing which is what I do enjoy. Don't ask stupid questions because he will call you out for it. GO TO CLASS. DO NOT SKIP. Only 4 tests
Mr. Selcraig is pretty nice, however he can be very rude if you get his bad side. If he sees you use your phone... your screwed. He gets really angry when people use their phones in class and will call you out on it. In order to pass you must write down everything he says and memorize it. Super hard, I had to study atheist 5 hours for every test
Dr. Selcraig is a solid Professor & is very knowledgeable. He is a pretty tough grader & you wont pass if your study/listening & note taking habits suck. No TRACS site, no extra credit, no grade bumps. We read two books & write essays on them, two tests, then the final. Only 5 grades to make in this class. If you want a challenge, take him!
Tests only, gives you all info needed in class. really nice, will answer all questions.
Selcraig is hands down the best professor at Texas State, he is very animated in his lectures and leaves you wanting to know more. For his exams, its fill in the blank (40 points) and an essay (60 points). For the essay you just rewrite everything he gave in his lecture and the fill in the blank is names/dates . 10/10 would take again!!
Professor Selcraig is a very funny and entertaining person BUT his lectures are LONG. I'm talking about 3-4 pages of notes every class then youre expected to learn and write a paper over 30 pages of info. Ridiculous. I got a 35 on my first paper... I usually make A's on everything. Highly advise you to not take him.
I would not recommend Selcraig's class. There are only 4 exams grades and the expectations on the exam are ridiculous. I've never struggled in a history class until now. He crams too much information into one exam and barely gives any notice to what will be on the exam. I've attended SI sessions and have still failed every exam! do not take!
There are no extra credit opportunities, no homework, no quizzes. All the tests are based on the lectures given in class. Make sure to attend every class lecture! To review for the test make sure to study every single lecture word for word because that's the only way to get a 100. The tests are based on an essay portion and fill in the blank.
