his notes are pretty easy to follow and his tests are not that tricky. for anyone whos afraid to take organic chemistry..i strongly recommend silliman. hes also really enthusiastic.
He was one of the best teachers I've ever had.
I really like the way he tries to get students involved. He is very easy to communicate with, and he keeps things moving along well. His notes are great-easy to read, legible, and well written. He explains everything well. He rocks.
His teaching abilities are off the charts. The Tests weren't too hard either, if you want to learn and get a high grade, take Dr. Silliman! he's a great teacher and will put a smile on ur face every lecture.
very good teacher and fun class....very helpful and understanding
Good teacher and funny guy. He is very helpfull and explains everything well. Go to class and take the quizzes and you should have no problem pulling an A or B.
he sux. he is a dork..doesnt relate to ne thing closely connected to personal experience..real life..or comedial reference..takes notes allllll class long..NO break and the test will kill your ass w/weak study guide practically no study guide..
He's a great teacher but I found this class to be hard. Sometimes he goes fast so you have to stay focused. Study his notes and do the assignments in the book along the way- they arent for a grade but are very helpful. Nice guy overall.

The material is hard, but he kept his tests fairly easy.

I had a very hard time in this class but this guy was great. He took his time and really tried to help everyone learn the material. I recommend you take him especially if you have a hard time with the subject.
I dropped the class..enough said
he is a very helpful teacher yes the class is hard but he is very willing to help! definetly recommend this class! I dont know anything about chemistry and I got a B!
kinda a hard class but he is very helpful and willing to work with you! i do not no anything about chem and i got a B! really recommend this class he is a great teacher!!!
he's really cool, goes straight by the book and clarifies material :]
Great teacher!! Very enthusiastic and willing to help! He covers everything you need to know for tests. Even if you're not a chem person I think you'd do fine if you came to class.
he is very nice, he is one of the best teacher i have had , he really know your ttuff. and very helpful.
He is a very laid back guy, who enjoys what he teaches. Just take notes, listen and participate in class. There was no book for this class.
Amazing teacher! He knows his stuff, crystal clear on what he is talking about, and very willing to help you. I took him for Chem 1 and Chem 2 and got a B, almost close to an A, both times. The homework problems don't have to be turned in, but if you do them, you do very well on his exams! I WISH HE'D TEACH ORGANIC!!!!!!!!!!
His notes are very legible and easy to understand. SOO willing to help and makes class funny. I loved this professor, he's by far one of my favorite professors that I have taken my entire college career.
Best Teacher I have had thus far. If you go to class, take notes, and go to SI sessions you will do fine. The tests are straight from his notes and in class assignment we get every friday. It is the right amount of lecture and practical application. Take him if you can.
Great professor test are straight from the notes and team learning groups. I Highly recommend this Teacher. He is a Very Funny guy to
Awesome Teacher! Made learning chem less confusing. Really helpful and straight forward! Si sessions helped a lot. Tests are exactly like his examples.
If you don't get an A or B in this class, change you're major because you shouldn't be in the Science field. Super easy, tests straight from the notes, and a super nice prof. Go to SI sessions and you're golden. Great prof to ask recommendation letters from too.
Loved him! Funny, laid back, understanding professor. Made chemistry easy to get!
Really good professor. Very helpful and seems to enjoy what he does.
Very straight-forward and easy to follow.
He's probably the best teacher in the school and very helpful. He's funny and he is willing to help you outside of class. The only reason you wouldn't do well in his class is if you didnt' go (which most people don't).
Laid back, funny and explains things very good. Broke chemisty down barney style. I earned an A and I hate chemistry. However, not so much after his course.
I've taken 3 classes with Dr. Silliman, Gen Chem 1/2 and Chemical Oceanography. He is one of the top 5 professors at TAMUCC, easily. Dr. S is extremely nice, explains concepts slowly and clearly. I recommend Dr. Silliman for all majors, science or not.
Dr. Silliman was a wonderful teacher. He was always willing to help one on one and in class. He gives ample extra credit that will seriously help with your grade. I seriously feared chemistry but ended up with a grade over 100% (thanks to the extra credit!)I highly recommend Dr. Silliman!!!
Such a great professor, I Hate Chemisty but after I took his class, I now love chemistry, he made it so easy to understand, just dont miss a day of class or you will get behind and do the suggested homework, The class will be super easy if you just keep up with the work and take notes. Absolutley Great Professor! and hes hilarious
best professor ever! had him for gen. chm 1 & 2 and was suuuuper happy when I found out that he's teaching organic chm! I don't study, and i don't do the homework and I made an easy B+. if you only do the homework he recommend then that A is yours!
I took this class in summer and it wasn't hard at all. Test are easy if you do the homework. Take him, he make chemistry easy to understand! Easy A, if you study .
I hate chemistry! However, Dr. Silliman really made class enjoyable! He was very approachable, so he would definitely help out if you ever had questions. Overall, I would certainly recommend him to anyone!
This is an easy class if you put in any effort. Go to class and copy the lecture notes. Everything you need for an A is on those notes. The group project is pretty easy and is done in pieces over the semester so it's not too much work at once. Dr. Silliman makes chemistry understandable and relatable for non-science people.
Absolutely love Dr. Silliman! One of the best professors the university has.
He is not a good teacher
He is a great teacher. Best advice: Don't skip class, take notes, pay attention. Follow those three steps and you will do great.
Where to start with Dr. Silliman, he is such a wonderful professor! He makes chemistry exciting and explains it perfectly. His tests are not hard, but you do have to study. Approachable! He will for sure help you if you have questions about anything. I highly recommend him
I completely hated chemistry before taking this class, but Dr. Silliman explains the material in a way that anyone could understand. He is extremely helpful and as long as you do the homework and go to class you'll do well. I highly recommend this teacher! So glad he teaches o-chem
Great teacher! makes it easy to understand, highly recommend!
Would not take another organic chemistry course taught by this professor. Stands there in front of the camera writing hand-written notes and draws a few reactions. He draws reaction mechanisms with barely any explanation. When asked to explain, repeats the same thing again. Thinks all students are PhD's and thinks we already should know it all.
Grade for last post should not be A+. Failed this class as did many others. Could not pass a single one of these ridiculously hard tests.
May be able to teach general chemistry but has no idea how to teach organic chem! Very unclear, seems unable to explain certain things and expects we come into the class knowing as much as him. Do NOT take his class for organic chem! He left us sitting there feeling stupid and helpless.... There's other professors much more qualified...
This man is awesome. He is very clear and specific when teaching OCHEM. He draws out everything in the board and gives you the notes the day before. Although homework is optional be prepared to do it.
I highly recommend Dr. Silliman. I enjoyed him after taking Chem 2 with him that I jumped at the opportunity to take him for Organic chemistry. He is approachable if you need help understanding something. Organic can be difficult, but he breaks it down in a way that students can understand. If he taught Organic 2, I'd take him again.
Excellent professor! This was my second time taking Chem and I got an A! His lectures are super easy to understand! I took this class in the summer and I would definitely recommend him! He does assign homework which is not a grade, but definitely recommend doing it! You will see questions on the test like that!
He is a great guy.
He was extremely nice and helpful, I would suggest him to anyone!
I had him for O Chem I, it is a very hard subject but if you go to talk to him or if you have an SI for the class make sure to talk with them when you don't understand something. This subject builds upon what you learn so you need to make sure you understand. Once the test comes back if you want to talk about your missed questions he will.
Gives a pop quiz every Friday. He is really nice and wants you to understand. Really easy class. Class isn't mandatory but you won't understand as well if you don't show up everything is from the notes not the book.
Extremely nice and definitely makes sure you understand the material. Had him for OChem. One word of advice: He emails out notes to be filled in during lecture. PRINT. THEM. OUT. Having them so easily organized will save you.
Great professor. I took the summer session; there were quizzes/tests every week. The textbook is needed for the optional homework problems he assigns. The questions on the test mirror homework problems and quiz problems. Dr. Silliman really tries to make chemistry fun and ensure that his students understand the material. I highly recommend him!
Tests were multiple choice but very challenging. If you don't know the material you won't be able to guess your way into a good grade. He is very lecture heavy but entertaining.
He is a great teacher but he does not know organic chemistry. I am dropping the course because I am lost.
He is personally one of my favorite professors on campus. He is funny and supportive and always willing to help. His only grades are tests, quizzes and group projects though. He gives you homework questions but they are not turned in, just to help learn the subjects. I would take him over and over, great teacher!!
Does fill-in-the-blank notes. He usually hints at when he'll give pop quizzes. Pop quizzes are hard (unless you study) and only 4 questions. He's pretty funny and easy to approach. His tests are pretty hard. Khan Academy helped me the most for his class. Final replaces lowest grade.
Dr. Silliman is great. He is always available to help you! O Chem is hard so be prepared to read and reread! Go to his office hours! Ask questions! Print out the notes before class!!!
Silliman is a great professor. 5 pop quizzes with 3 questions, study, they could help your grade. 3 exams (easy, just read all your notes) and 1 group presentation (5min). He gives 10 points extra credit if 75% of the class completes the course evaluations and in every exam there is also 1 extra credit question for 4 points.
Chemistry is really hard. I could not pass the course.
Dr. Silliman is amazing! He's a really caring and great professor. His notes are handwritten and you copy from what he writes no powerpoints and they are not on blackboard so even though there is no attendance go to class and pay attention! The exams are easy just study the notes he gives you exactly what you need to know!
I take him for non-science major chemistry. He's always making corny jokes & he's a great guy. The trick to passing the tests is to memorize the notes. Test questions are word for word from lectures. No attendance, so you technically don't have to attend as long as you get the notes from someone. Weekly 3 question quizzes straight from the notes.
I highly recommend taking him! He is a great professor who truly cares how well you do. You must attend class the notes will not be posted online and there are weekly quizzes. Your final replaces your lowest test grade. Great life examples given throughout class which helps you a lot on the tests. One group project that isn't bad at all.
He is not very good at teaching organic. Take him for intro to chemistry then granted A.
Dr. Silliman definitely cares about his students and wants you to succeed in any way possible. That doesnt mean you cant make an effort however b/c this is ochem and its not an easy subject. Print out his notes BEFORE class, attend SI to get extra practice, and go to his office hours if you dont understand. Exams not easy so practice everything
Dr. SIlliman is AWESOME but the class is hard! Make sure to study and do the fill in the blank notes. His notes are very helpful. The SI is great. Office hours really helped me a lot. I hope Dr. Silliman tries to teach some higher level chemistry because I would take them with him.
I loved taking Organic Chemistry 1 with Silliman. He made is super easy to understand in lecture and will always answer your questions if needed. You can always pop in during his office hours and he will be happy to help! He's really nice and funny! Best advice is to form a study group!
Took Dr. Silliman for Organic Chemistry 1 and 2. It was hard, but Dr. Silliman is a great professor and he is very easy to follow. I loved his notes (they're fill in the blank), his exams are hard (the book has a lot of helpful practice problems), and he is very funny. He makes a lot of jokes!
He writes notes everyday (but doesn't post them, so show up even though he doesn't take attendance). Everything on the quizzes/tests is exactly in the notes. Very easy class if you show up and take down the notes. I really liked him and would take him again. Also, he gives out random pop quizzes, but gives hints on when they will be.
Great professor!!!! This is an extremely hard class and definitely one of those weed out classes but Silliman is a great teacher. You can visit his office for extra help and he explains material well.
I actually wasn't supposed to have Silliman for gen chem, but I'm so glad I have him. He writes out his notes, and honesty does a great job at explaining (and re-explaining) the material if you don't understand. Has mini "pop-quizzes" but will imply there will be a quiz next class. I am taking him for chem 2 during summer, and I'm actually excited!
This course was hard, the only grades are your tests and quizzes, so it's very easy to drop a letter grade. The quizzes are only 4 questions making it easy to get bad grades. The tests are really hard but he gives them back after you take them. Lowest test grade is replaced by the final. Homework is given but is not graded, it is just extra help.
He is a great man, but for Organic Chemistry, I would not recommend him.
He is one of the best profess on my education career. He truly cares about his students/.
He provided notes and lecture videos of him reading the notes (waste of time to watch). The exams were okay, very hard if you did not study. A through J answer choices. Extra credit on each exam and the final. I heard so much good things about him, however, was very disappointed. He did not have lecture, just threw you the content. Learn yourself.
I hate chemistry so it says something when I say that Dr. Silliman made chemistry so much easier for me. I took him when it was online so he posted fill in notes for us and videos to those notes at the beginning of each week so it was very flexible. Exam questions are similar to the tophat homework. The homework isn't mandatory but I recommend it.
I had Silliman for Ochem 1&2. Silliman would probably be amazing in person, but online is tough. He doesn't hold live lectures so if you have questions you'll have to go to the office hours. Is very caring and helpful but exams and quizzes are pretty tough
I took Dr. Silliman for both ochem 1 and 2 and it was definitely extremely challenging so you have to work for your grade! He definitely cares about his students and gave a whole letter curve at the end of the semester. Tophat questions aren't mandatory but highly recommended as they are similar or even identical to exam questions.
Dr. Silliman is an amazing professor. I definitely would not have done well in Ochem if I didn't have him as my professor. He doesn't give extra credit, but he gives a pretty good curve at the end of the semester. He truly wants his student to excel and enjoy his class.
Professor Silliman wants all students to succeed, and will do whatever it takes to achieve that. I don't recommend taking online, as it is fully asynchronous. Tests are difficult and weighted heavily, but regardless Professor Silliman is very caring and will respond to emails quick, even on weekends. Highly recommend him, but take him in person!
Great professor! Made one of the hardest classes I've taken so far so easy to understand. Material is difficult, but he explains so well and provides notes he goes through in class. SO much better than ppts. Attend class! It's way harder to learn it without him. I took voice recordings and went through during studying. HW helps so much with exams.
Ochem is a hard class but I'm glad that I've taken it with Silliman. I'm glad that I'm able to understand him and he's a very nice guy. I hear that he gives a whole letter curve grade so I'll let y'all know what I get...I'm failing right now whoops :(
Easily the hardest class I've ever taken. I passed ochem 1 with him, but failed ochem 2. His tests are extremely difficult and majority of your grade comes from the 3 tests. Minimal practice problems are shown, which I believe was my downfall. He's nice and never makes you feel stupid, but this course was very hard. Will be retaking in the fall!
Silliman is easily one of the best professors I've ever had, maybe the best. Organic Chemistry II is an insanely difficult class for those of us who aren't great at chemistry. He WILL help you, you just have to ask. Notes are extremely helpful and I looked forward to his class.
tests make up most of the grade + they are difficultttt. Lectures are super boring + reading the book will help more than showing up to class. quizzes through the semester, also difficult. hopefully he rounds our grades at the end because most of the class is failing
Prof. Silliman's course was fairly difficult. He only lectures using his notes(posted online). He was very friendly, so go to office hours and SI sessions for help. Just don't expect to get an A if you aren't a good test taker, as exams make up a fair amount of the grade and have A–J answer choices. If you struggle with Chemistry, take Prof. Olson.
