One of the best teachers I have ever had. Makes the class fun and interesting. Easy to listen to and gets the point across clearly. A+ Teacher!!!
Very easy going guy, covers the material well, provides his notes online, take chapter quizzes online 3x, easy semester project, study well for the tests and you can do alright. Assigns course grade based on your class rank. Sense of humor. Take him.
Nice guy. Always makes funny comments. 4 Exams and one easy project. No homework.
This teacher was awsome, for such a dry subject he actually made it interesting by using his own real life examples. I really enjoyed having him and if you put some work into this class you shouldn't have a problem
good class!! good guy (fair)
Very good teacher. He seemed very willing to help those having trouble. Tests were tough but manageable, a lot of studying involved. There were several quizzes and one project, homework is done together in class. I'd say this may be as good as it gets in accounting.
Great class. Grading system is based so everyone passess the class. Top 1/3 get A's, middle get B's, bottom get C's. Interesting? It's ****ing accounting so what do you expect. He's a funny guy though and makes fun of us when we're all hungover in class.
Smith is tight as hell. He clowns on kids who make stupid comments in class. Easy class, just don't be a dumbass. Top 1/3 get A's, middle 1/3 B's and Lower 1/3 C's.
Awesome class! Smith is the coolest teacher and he actually makes accounting somewhat interesting.
Great teacher. Very clear on teaching the material. Would take him again in a heartbeat. Such a great guy with funny stories and random comments during class. Always let us out early.
One of the funniest acct classes available. Lots of great stories to tell. Tests are tough if you dont read up and do the practice probs. Lectures have lots of momentum. Very approachable and helpful in and out of class.
Great guy. Funny and easy going, very easy to relate. The mater in tax II was tough, but he made it easy and enjoyable to learn. He tells you exactly how to do well in the class, and if you follow his instructions you will do well. Take this professor over any other!
AWESOME! I love this guy. He is really funny and he really wants you to learn. It is not easy though. You have to work. Only complaint...Good luck with office hours...he is rarely on time and doesn't check email often
Gives the top 1/3 of the class A's, middle 1/3 B's and lower 1/3 C's and lower. Seemed fine at first until everyone started cheating and getting perfect scores on everything. I have like an 85% in the class and I'm getting a C.
Great guy! He teaches what you need to know to pass his class and pass the CPA exam. Any true accounting major will appreciate his style. Go to class most of the time, take the quizzes, and know the material.....an A is easy if you actually pay attention.
Awesome prof! So bummed that i won't have any classes to take with him anymore. i had him for managerial and tax II...best accounting classes i've had! funny, down to earth, great teacher. actually cares if you learn. relates dry tax subjects to great life stories! must take him!
Smith is one of the best professors you will encounter teaching a quantative course. He filters through the book material and picks out what you need to know. He's also pretty amusing. The exams are straight forward, no surprises. I didn't do the homework but I did the quizes, went to class and got an A.
So funny! Great guy and class is pleasant to attend. Class isn't mandatory but its helpful because he goes through the chapters and only covers material that he expects you to know for the class. Splits class into 3, top third gets and A, 2nd a B, etc. (can only help you: if you have a 90% but are in the bottom 3rd You'll still get an A).
Best teacher!! I always had a hard time with accounting but he made it so fun that it was the one class I always looked forward to. He is really funny and the problems on the test are straight out of the review problems in the book. TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM!!!!!
super nice guy, really enjoyed his class! If anyone can make accounting clear its him, definitely take this class. 3 mc tests, final exam, and online quizzes for each chapter that you can take over and over till you get 100%. most accounting classes are boring and incomprehensible, but he made it entertaining!
This guy tries to be funny, but he ends up just being mean to his students. He doesn't bother learning anyones names, and his tests suck. He goes back and forth on what he expects on his tests. His class is bearable, but i'm glad that i'm done with accounting.
Good professor, very strong personality, tries to learn everyone's name so he can call on you at random but overall good professor.
Smith is a great guy. He's pretty funny, but you pretty much have to teach yourself. He's not too hard, but it's more managerial accounting sucks, not prof Smith. I'd take him again.
Professor Smith is an incredible professor. He makes managerial accounting, which easily could be the most boring subject ever, exciting and interesting. Because of his effective teaching methods, I have learned a lot and can implement it into the business world. I would absolutely take another class with him and I highly recommend him.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Jim Smith! after i took acct 201 i thought i was going to kill myself in 202, but Smith makes it easy to understand and really clear. He straight forward with his tests. If you study & pay attention you'll get an A. Plus hes funny. TAKE HIM!
Professor Smith is my favorite professor I have ever taken by far. I was dreading managerial accounting and because of his amazing class, I am now an accounting major and have an amazing accounting internship. He has really effective teaching methods and a perfect energy level- not too crazy, not too mundane- so you if you listen, you will learn!
Energetic about the class and makes if fun. Learns everyones name and grades where top 1/3 of class gets A and so on so it eventually helps you out 87 ends up being an A usually. Uses the book all through class and gives 1 online quiz per chapter but can take as many times as you want. Talks about his college days and understands that people skip
Professor Smith is the best teacher I've ever had and the reason I became an accounting major. He cares about the success of his students, is clear, concise, and always helpful. I was given an on-the-spot accounting test during the interview for my current internship and impressed the CEO with the knowledge I gained from this class.
Professor Smith is a good teacher and makes class quite enjoyable. Very funny and keeps the material interesting and relative. Tests are difficult, but come straight from the homework problems done in class, so make sure you do those!! Only downside is he is not helpful in office hours and a bit rude/blunt when asking questions to him.
Professor Smith is a great teacher. Extremely clear in class and wants students to succeed. Online quizzes are easy and you're able to do them as many times as possible. Gives examples directly from the book that show up on the test. As long as you study the hw you're golden on the tests. Take him..great acct professor.
Funny teacher. extremely hard to follow his notes though he abbreviates everything but if you do the online quizes and look over the hw you'll do fine on quizes. Definitely recommend taking him
I hated accounting before Smith. Now I understand it completely. Clear explanation. Clear notes. Clear in what you need to study. And clearly you can get an A. Amazing professor who makes accounting fun, as crazy as that may seem. HIGHLY recommended.
Amazing professor. Puts you on the spot in class, but it helps you learn. Top third of the class gets A's. Do the online quizzes, they help so much on the test. Really funny guy. Makes you want to go to class.
This class is so hard but this professor is hilarious. I don't really understand what he is talking about but his classes are worth going to because he is such a great teacher.
The rumor around the water cooler is that he is the dreamiest tax teacher on this side of the Mississippi. Also, I heard through the grapevine that he was spotted at the local soda fountain with Selena Gomez.OMG,and he totally has the best lectures.
Funny guy! Manages to make tax, a boring and dry subject, light and fun. He could tone it down a bit though (can get mean). To get an A, study ahead of time and do the online quizzes. He'll tell you this the first day of class but half of the kids won't listen. Please listen. In-class excel notes are very helpful. He also looks like GREG POPOVICH!
He's great for tax 1, tax 2, not so much. Funny guy, but he is unclear when it comes to corporate tax. Difficult to follow.
Smith is a hilarious professor. He makes lectures fun although they can be a bit boring and confusing at times. Tests are REALLY tough--if you want an easy A, don't take Smith. You really have to work hard if you want a good grade.
Great professor. Absolutely hilarious. Kept lectures entertaining. Lectures cover exactly what you need to know. Study what he says to and you'll get an A
Grading is ranked and the bulk is tests. This professor makes a dry subject like tax pretty enjoyable. He moves through the material at a very quick pace so bring a print-out of the lecture summary to class. Do the quizzes on Blackboard to study for the tests.
Excellent professor, with a good sense of humor. Grades on a curve: Top 13 of both sections combined gets an A, middle 13 a B, bottom 13 a C. Expensive textbook is unnecessary, so long as you print, read and use the handouts and Excel files provided on Blackboard. Allows a cheat sheet for all the tests, so make sure you take good notes.
Jim is my favorite teacher at USD by far. He's hilarious and his course is VERY fair. He understands it can be a difficult course, but his excel docs made it much easier (notes and practice questions with answers). His online quizzes gave answers at the end, very helpful. Spent 0 time on class, crammed 1.5 days before every test, got an A on all 4.
Second time taking Smith and his class is still my favorite one. His lectures are funny and you get a cheat sheet on the tests. Also, he posts the chapter summaries online so don't bother buying the textbook. Do the work and you can easily get a good grade.
I hated accounting before this class, but definitely changed opinions after Dr. Smiths class. He is a super great professor and his tests are exactly on what you learn in class. Willing to help you out whenever you need and is HILARIOUS. You will be laughing throughout the entire class, he is great.
Smith made showing up to class worthwhile and enjoyable, and taught the material in an understandable and simple way. He goes over examples in class that are very similar to the tests. There are 3 exams and a final. The homework isn't graded, but you should do them because they look a lot like the tests. I would definitely recommend him.
Jim is the homie. Class was boring and the material is very dry but he makes it somewhat bearable. 4 exams make up almost all of the grade
Coolest teacher I've ever had. Want to be friends with the guy so bad. Class is also graded on a very generous curve (33% A's/33% B's/33% C's) amongst all of his sections. Absolutely must take Jim, he's the man.
A MA ZING!!!!!!!!!!!! Best teacher you will find in USD by far!!! Take him!!! I took his financial class during the summer intersession, it was great and the time went so fast! I almost didn't want the course to end!
Great professor and very clear expectations. Grading is curved at 1/3 getting As, 1/3 getting Bs and 1/3 getting Cs. As long as you study the blackboard questions and do practice questions from the textbook, you'll do fine. Highly recommend for anyone who doesn't necessarily love accounting but needs it as a pre req.
Don't let these reviews fool you! Yes, he's a 'cool dude' and yea you wanna 'grab a beer with him'; thats the problem! he goofs around with the class and relies on you to do all of the study. all he does in class is do problems and doesn't explain material, its entirely up to the student to learn. and no, im not saying this cause i failed the class
this guy doesnt teach you at all!! its just tests that is 100% of your grade he is too busy cracking jokes and doesnt teach! i barely passed because he doesn't teach you!! he is a funny dude tho ill give him that!!
Smith is so fun, which makes the class much more enjoyable. Accounting is hard! But Smith makes it fair and spices class time up. That being said, of course you will have to work outside of class to do well. (As expected - it's college people, come on.) I'd recommend him, you'd enjoy him a lot.
Three test and final. Other than that, some easy online quizzes and some filler points. The tests are hard and 1/3 class gets an A, 1/3 gets a B, 1/3 gets a C. I am very competitive, so I was not willing to help my friends out in this course, unlike most courses where I would be. He is very funny, but his humor takes away from learning concepts.
I love smith!! Accounting is a hard course in itself so no matter who you take you WILL have to work unless you are a natural accountant. Smith's lectures help give you a broad idea of the chapter and lays out examples of the material. THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TO HELP YOU DO WELL!!! YOU MUST ALSO DO THE HOMEWORK TO UNDERSTAND MATERIAL AND DO WELL ON TEST
Professor Smith is the funniest professor I've ever had. He makes coming to class fun and explains everything in such a clear and understandable way. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you really do need to come to class in order to pass because the class grades are based on the tests. He is amazing, take him!!
Jim is the funniest professor I ever had. In spite of that, he also explains the material in a clear and simple way (and tells some funny stories along the way). Tests are easy if you go through the homework many times, if you do that, you shouldnt be surprised by any of the questions on the exams.
He is a tough GRADER. I took his course in summer and it was very competitive.
Extremely passive aggressive and makes you feel stupid when asking questions. Spent hours studying and doing the homework (exactly what he said you needed to to do to succeed) but did not receive positive results. Do not take unless you are an exceptional test taker.
Professor Smith is a funny and all around great guy.... HOWEVER, he is not a good professor. He will not help you outside of class ( or in class for that matter) he does not usually answer questions throughout the class or will make you feel stupid for asking a question. If you are serious about your work i do not recommend taking him.
He is so great and super funny! Every class is a lecture, but he's very enthusiastic and definitely makes it interesting, he doesn't just read off of powerpoints. The tests are fair and relate to the material presented in class (unlike MANY of my professors), and as long as you do some of the homework and the practice quizzes you will do well.
He is fine. Not the best. Very sarcastic and can be rude. He is an old man and is set in his ways, thinks hes funnier than he is. He takes points off for going to the bathroom or if you annoy him? WIsh i had someone else. Not a hard class, just annoying. Also randomly calls on people and makes you feel bad if you dont know it
James Smith is a really tough grader and he is a good guy. I like his personality but i do not like the way he teaches in the class. This CLASS IS TOTALLY ON YOU. You need to study very hard to pass his class, and the exams questions are not easy
Jim smith is very rude professor. Yeah! his personality is very funny but sometimes it could be embarrassing to some students. His class is very tough and you only have 3 exams. If you are not a great test taker, avoid his class. Again, he's not a great professor but good
This professor does not teach at all! Most stressful class because you have to literally teach yourself. All he does is hw problems and says um this is pretty easy stuff 90% of the lecture and the other 10% jokes around. Doesnt teach you what to do or how to do it. Stay away and go take another professor who is actually good at their job.
Jim Smith is an overall great guy. I always look forward to his lectures, because he his a hilarious guy and makes class interesting. He explains difficult accounting concepts in a way in which everyone can understand. If you have the chance to take Professor Smith, I would highly advise you do!
He is a funny guy that shares random stories during lectures. He loves participation. At the same time, he can be cocky and thinks he is hilarious. You don't really learn anything from class and you have to teach yourself. He suggests doing the homework and quizzes 3 or 4 times yourself. He doesn't curve and your grade is based on your class rank.
Smith doesn't teach, period. He shows you the bare minimum of what needs to be done and then says "this is pretty straight forward stuff." Then you take his quizzes and it's material you've never seen. If you're good at teaching yourself an entire subject he's your guy, but he's more of a guide than a teacher.
Jim Smith is such a nice man. He was so reasonable with grading and he tried to keep people engaged in class. Love this man <3. I don't like accounting but he made it fun.
Professor Smith is a very friendly guy and does seem to care a lot about his students. The class is really only graded on tests though which can be pretty difficult and take a while to study for. He does not teach the material very well in class so you basically have to teach it to yourself. He is super funny which makes the class entertaining.
Jim needs to have his performance as a professor evaluated. He is extremely lazy. MANY Errors are in HW, Quizzes, syllabus and nearly all class materials. Clearly he does not care and makes his class a competition to compensate. His blackboard is a mess. Doesn't respond to emails, office hours not posted. Students mental health have suffered. :(
Smith is a nice enough guy but made the class competitive. He gives you a rank in his class (across all sections) which is what determines your grade. His teaching style is a mess and hard to follow along with unless you already understand the material. If you do not show up to class or do the homework numerous times, do not expect to pass.
Jim will give you your grades based on class rank (top 1/3 gets an A, so on and so forth). If you keep practicing the practice exams, you'll nail the exams and rank well in the class. Pretty competitive, but worth your time to practice. Homework was not required and not really helpful, so keep practicing the practice exams. Chill guy, picks on you.
Awesome! Lectures are super entertaining he makes jokes all through clases. Unlimitied tries on quizes (take home). He tells you what type of problems are going to be on the test and are based on the quizes so easy to good do on exams as long as you practice and put in the work. If he likes you you will do good in his class too.
Jim Smith is possibly my least favorite professor at USD. He is solely exam based, yet decides to always wander off typic during his lectures in the process. Save yourself some time and money and avoid taking Smith.
Literally the funniest professor I have had. He makes an otherwise boring subject entertaining. If you make good cheat sheets, do the practice quizzes and homework problems the tests are easy.
Save yourself the time and money and avoid taking Smith. He rants the entire class about anything but accounting and you barely learn a thing, let alone have any preparation for his exams that make up 90% of his grading rubric.
I LOVE professor Smith. He makes a hard/boring topic fun/interesting. No homework and all quizzes are online with unlimited attempts. Tells you pretty much exactly what till be on the exam and lets you bring a cheat sheet. One of my favorite profs and would take again! Just make sure you pay attention in class or you will miss something important
Take him. As long as you show up to class and take good notes (which you should put onto your cheat sheet for the exams), you will pass! He is so funny and a great professor. Graded on 6 exams, online quizzes (that are unlimited attempts), and participation.
Take his class very easy, best professor I have had so far at USD. Not mandatory but show up
Rank-based grading (40/40/20 split) Graded on four tests Lecture heavy and uses the whiteboard instead of powerpoints Cold calls (but not on quiet students) Funny analogies and scenarios
Prof. Smith is a fun guy. If you show up to class then you'll understand the material and you'll do great! He grades on like 4 exams and maybe 1 HW that is optional to boost your grade. He has an interesting grading curve. You get a class rank and if you're in the top third of the class, you'll get an A (even if you have like a 81 in the class).
One of the best professors I've ever had. Makes the lectures super funny while telling a story and explaining the content well. The workload is super manageable and not too difficult, he was a pretty easy professor overall. Very caring and just a great guy too.
Jim Smith is one of the best, if not the best professor Ive had at USD. He cares about you as a person, and is just hilarious. He gives 4 exams, lets you have a cheat sheet for each one. He uses a class ranking system to give you an overall grade in the class, but it can only help you out, it won't harm your grade. Highly recommend this professor!!
jim smith is the best. funny, very good professor. he has videos that you can watch before the lectures, they will really help you learn and study. in class is fun. he cracks jokes all the time and tells funny stories, but beware you might get called on a lot. lectures are okay, vids better. overall great class, not too hard. i highly recommend!!
Honestly a great class if you need to get the credit out of the way. However, I basically taught myself everything outside of class. His lectures are entertaining, but I didn't learn anything during class. If you are a bad test taker, I would not recommend since tests are 80% of your grade and then he ranks you by your avg test grade.
Hands down a top 5 professor I've had at this university. He made accounting so much fun as he cares deeply about the students and helping them succeed. I would highly recommend acct students take him and definitely go to the lectures he explains all the test/hw questions there. PS talk to him about the lakers or sports to get on his good side.
Asides from being an avid sports fan and dad of many, Jim is definitely a character. I enjoyed his classes even though I dislike accounting with a passion. If I had to say a strategy for his exams which is the major grade, watch the videos on 2x speed before class like an hour or 2 and use AI to generate similar HW or quiz problems.
