Extremely unclear when teaching. Takes many sidetracks and skips steps. However, when problems with homework, very helpful.
I took 5 semester of math and he was my favorite math teacher by far. There's no excuse for not passing this class if you do the work. Math isn't my strongest subject but I found him to be very clear and easy to understand with a good personality.
Tests are hard. Homework is easy. He will explain something to you until you know it and is ALWAYS willing to help you with questions for AS LONG AS IT TAKES for you to know it. I will definately take him again.
i took him about two years ago, so he may have changed. but when i took math from him, he was more interested in showing off his math skills on the board then with making sure everyone in the class understood the material
I hated this class, and I hated this teacher. By the end of the semester at least half the class had dropped. He did a mediocre job explaining the material and seemed confused when people asked questions.
Very helpful and wants to make sure you understand the material. His tests are hard but he usually has an xtra credit problem on the test to help out. Homework is extremly easy, easiest I've ever had assigned homework before. Taking him again for Math
Worst teacher I ever had. Don't take this teacher! He will make you cry when you ask for help with the material. A teacher is supposed to help you, not make you feel bad for not understanding it. He skips steps and never explains them.
study hard for the test. he works on the computer so most of the work is not done by hand. study his way of asking questions and becareful of key words,
This class starts off fairly easy, but the material gets much harder by the end. The quizzes are easy, the tests are definitley not. He gives lots of examples which seems to help somewhat, but you learn material so fast that it can be kind of overwhelming. Be computer savvy.
I think you could go to his class for 5 mins and learn everything all the extra is just him repeating the material.
moves to fast when teaching and doesnt explain things through
If you take this class, get a tutor because he really doesn't explain things clearly. He doesn't explain that you can figure out these huge formulas in only two steps on a calculator. He can teach math 155 but really can't explain statistics at all!!
He's an awesome teacher if you're just starting out in math and still feel a little uncomfortable with it. He welcomes questions and will answer everyone's questions fully. If you don't get it one way, he'll explain it in another. Alot of people dropped this class, but that's normal & not his fault.
tests were very hard and the lectures and homework did not prepare you very well - he's always available to help you though and a very friendly person
Terrible instructor! Doesn't explain the material clearly, everyone was always lost. The new online method he uses makes it hard to even learn anything since he doesn't go over homework in class. unless you are really quick with math i wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
I would say overall Spencer is a good teacher. I got an "A" in the class. He makes it possible to do homework online if u want, which was really cool. If you pay attention and do the homework you can get an A in this class, easy.
Great teaching concept
Good teacher, but the tests are tough....
He is always available to help students. Very clear on what he expects and gives plenty of time to complete assignments. Gives tests every class. grades fairly and gives students chances to improve grades. I wish he was teaching 150B in the fall.
I think he is a good teacher. He makes you work hard but you learn a lot from him. When he notices a hard working student, he incourages them to work harder, that is what I like about him.
He is an excellent statistics teacher and knows his stuff without pretending to be a statistician. The group projects are easy. At first he is a lot of bark with no bite and after that he loosens up and we got to joke around a lot. Take the class that uses the mac comps- homework is online and study guides are available there too. Dont buy book
I recommend taking the version of this class that uses Mac computers. Makes it much easier for people like me, who hate math.
It gets a little boring sometimes, but Spencer is overall a really nice helpful guy, and makes things really easy to learn.

Like the Math Lab...I dont think he likes to answer questions
Math Lab is a great thing. It makes the class much more enjoyable, than just useing paper/pen
He instructs very clear and well. He's easy to learn from and gives plenty of time on homework assignments, always answers questions. Although on most days he makes me want to take a nap and at least one or two people always fall asleep!
AWESOME TEACHER..explains things very well. The math lab make homework incredibly easy. He knows what he is doing, I would highly reccomend him!!
Yes he's gay but still a nice guy. Very funny and king to speak with. He would always help me when I needed more time. He even let me take 1 quiz later because I wasnt feeling well. If you respect his time, he will respect you and you will pass the class. Lowest test score I got was a 93% because he is very thorough in his lectures. I only wish he would teach a 155 class because Ohlsen sucks donkey kong balls
Cool teacher. easy to talk to. Great class. fun at times, boring most of the time though. projects are a pain in the ass and really time consuming. i hate statistics so i dont really pay attention to his lectures anyway
Mr. Spencer is awsome, he is clear and to the point, but if you don't want to work, don't take his class.
very clear lectures, always willing to help, very patient, be sure and study for tests though. nothing bad to say about mr spencer, i recommend him
Mr. Spencer is the greatest teacher I have ever had when it comes to math. He is understanding, caring, and committed to helping students achieve endless possibilities. I advocate him to everyone I know, and I will see him for Math 155, and Math 15!!!! Keep up the good work Mr. Spencer.
Very good teacher. Does all the H/W online, which i liked. He is always willing to help you. He is reasonable when it comes to setting deadlines, and changing them if need be.
He is a very good teacher and very helpful.
So, I'm a Math hater. I struggle with it in general, but Jim was always extremely willing to take the time and go over things until I got it. Unlike one of the other people commenting, I thought that the lectures were not always clear. But, that might just be me and my problem with math.
very boring
good teacher but a complete dork..... goes off topic often and doesnt always answer what you are asking
So far, the best instructor in the department!
He is a very good teacher and always helpful with my questions. He is the most approachable math teacher I have ever had. The online Math 15 class is good for students that will put the effort in to learn. You are on your own more but Jim is always available to help.
his tests are hard. same type of problems as homework and lectures but worded very trickey and seem as if they dont even reflect from examples in class. the kind of class where you study your butt off for tests and they look like a different language when you get them.
Internet class, internet homework=lazy teacher. Unorganized internet class using technology that is not ready. Requires twice as much work as a regular class because systems are slow. Many errors in the computer systems. Teacher unwilling to realize, correct, or accommodates for bugs in the system. Unwilling to listen to student comment. F-
This instructor creates quizzes that are not based on homework. They are nearly impossible to study for. My observation was that all students regardless of strength in math experienced a blow from these curve-ball quizzes. Very frustrating! Avoid.
Well, this is my second time taking statistics. So far I'm doing a lot better in this class. It's still REALLY hard but what stats class isn't?! I think Spencer is the best in the Math Department. He's pretty clear at explaining it and yes, there's a lot of quizzes but there's so many that if you miss some it's not a big deal.
Great guy, really helped me but cheating on HW was so easy I didn't do the work and let my grade fall. Toward the end of the semester he started to make it easier for everyone and does a good job of making it easy to pass... TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Disaster! I'm great at math, but Spencer was enough to give me math anxiety. Disorganized lectures, doesn't explain things clearly. He jumps around and expects you to follow. All homework, qiuzzes, etc are online, so if you mess up one detail, youre screwed! Really, not recommended.
Mr. Spencer is a nice guy, but I really struggled in his class. All of the homework is due online, so if you have a shotty internet connection, or are pressed for time, you are screwed. He tries to explains things and makes himself available to the class, but sometimes I think he just expects everyone to know as much about math as he does.
He was nice but kinda of weird. All the homework is done online and there are lots of tests and quizzes. He is willing to help with questions about the homework but he doesnt anwser the questions very clearly. He is an ok teacher..
Very good teacher. If you do the homework without cheating and study for the tests (I personally just sat down at the computer and did all of the homework that will be covered in the test the night before). Basically you need to put some effort into the class if you want an A.
He is okay, as far as math profs go. I mean, there really isn't any good ones at the JC. He does cut the students a lot of slack. Dropped the two lowest quiz scores, and also dropped the lowest Test score if you didn't miss more than two classes. However, there is tons of homework that is really easy but boring.
Statistics: He was not my first choice, but there was room in the class. Class got harder as it went along. Had a low A. Got a C on the final (thought i'd Ace it) And got a B in the Class. I didn't like him as a teacher, but I think it was the Subject more than the Teacher. Now I have him for Finite Math, and like him alot more. Finite Math Rocks!
This class is ridiculous. He'll spend like 40 minutes on how to read tables and then we won't even use them. Ever. He wastes so much time. He sucks at explaining things and can't answer questions. The more he says, the more confused people get. If you generally need extra help learning math, don't take him. The class is incredibly boring and stupid
The curriculum for this class is incongruent. The online homework is incapable of preparing you for the tests. The instructor fails to bridge statistical concepts with mathematical formula computations. As a result, the entire class is lost and student morale is cynical. I would not recommend this instructor to my worst enemy.
Terrible teacher. If you ask him a question, he'll go on and on about a different topic. He rambles so much that people cannot comprehend a word he says. Students get very confused very easily. He is disrespectful to students, as well. He can be extremely rude. Homework doesn't match what he teaches. I would highly recommend any teacher but him.
Took his class for online statistics. He struggles explaining certain concepts. I learn better on my own anyway. But if you have problems with math and need in depth explanations, I wouldn't recommend him at all. Also, some of the material on the exams was not covered in depth at all on the online homework or the textbook.
rude to students, acts like you should know the material before you even take the class. so much homework that wasn't even on the test. i don't recommend it
I took Mr. Spencer for 151 and 155 and really liked him. He was clear and took his time. He made things make sense. But Stats.....OMG...If you ask a question he'll just repeat the same thing you didn't understand, no simple explanations and expects everyone to know the stuff like the back of your hand or you wont pass!
Awful teacher. Doesnt explain anything well at all. I HIGHLY reccomend you DO NOT take him. If you need to pass stats take anyone else im telling you. He doesnt answer questions either and goes off on random topics. One day we talked about pointless stuff then the last 30min he told us what we needed to know. Having online hwk doesnt help either
If you dont already have a REALLY good understanding for math he is NOT the guy for you. He answers questions in an annoyed fashion like you should already know the answer and the way he teaches in class is considerably different from the way the book tries to helps you. I STRONGLY advise NOT taking him.
Do NOT Take This Teacher!! Unless you like spending 2x to 3x as many hours outside of class doing homework as you are in class. He requires online homework, but you have to copy all of it with a pencil and paper in order to get credit. Also, he is very unhelpful, and rude if you ask questions. I didn't learn a thing from him. Not a good choice.
He explained the subject matter well. Took the time to briefly talk about the background of concepts and techniques used in stats. He holds you to fair standards. The material itself is very easy! It seems like it would be hard to not pass this class
He's very negative.
Dreadful, completely useless teacher. Can't explain anything, only confuses the students more. Very rude and disrespectful. The homework online doesn't match the tests. Attendance is not very mandatory considering he's a bad teacher and can't explain anything, so you end up learning it on your own anyway. Oh and he's NOT funny. It was very boring
Mr. Spencer is a good teacher. He is always offering to review topics that students may have questions on. Online homework is helpful, but it doesn't always match the tests. Still have to write out online homework and submit in class. Quizzes online, and quizzes in class are just hw questions copied down. He allows a formula sheet on the tests.
First of all Statistics is a very hard, fast paced class and you have to remember that you are in COLLEGE! This is not a high school math class. I got an A in the class but I defiently had to work for it. He can be a little confusing but I like the way he sets up his grading system. I wold take his class again.
He is a nice man, and he really tries to help his students. There is a lot of busy work like outside projects, but the class is easy if you do all your work.
I do not recommend. Hes not a terrible teacher, but he had a hard time keeping my class under control.certain people had a free pass to come in late and hold the rest of us back because they had to be caught up on the last half hour of material! DO NOT buy the book. also the homework does not prepare you for exams.
Do not buy the book, everything is done online through my math lab. If you attend all of the classes, do all the homework, and the weekly quizzes the class is really easy. I got A's on all of my tests and never studied, for me the class was very easy and straight forward. All of the work prepares you for the test. I strongly recommend him!!
Utilized an online homework system which sounded nice untill I realized that he required you to write it all out on paper anyways which only made for 2x the amount of work and effort in completing the homework. Tests were long and difficult, class average on the final was 62% and 15 of the 23 people in the class didn't even have time to finish
I took him for Math 1A - HORRIBLE. He gives powerpoint presentations, does the same problems from the book, makes you register for online homework and does an awful job of explaining a problem. If you really want to learn calculus, DONT TAKE HIM!
He doesn't go over HW very well. When does you become more confused. Trying to use the problems he writes in class are usuless because his step by step process isn't crystal clear. He doesn't go over how to use all the calc functions you need! I retook this course with another teacher and got a B don't do what I did DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER
Jim Spencer is awful for math1a. I consider myself good at math (A's in everything until this point) and I had to drop his class. He gets confused on any questions asked and messes up his own examples. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Pretty average teacher. Quite helpful outside of class, but not really the best ant answering questions.
I really enjoyed Math15 with Professor spencer. He really tries to help the students understand, will repeatedly explain the same thing without making you feel stupid, leaves plenty of time for quesitons.
He has good intentions but he doesn't explain material well at all. You end up learning everything on your own. Boring, bland, confusing.
He is a great math professor. Explains what will be on the exam, goes over everything, doesn't make you feel stupid and over all nice. My favorite math professor at SRJC! Take him if you struggle in Math and need a slower paced math class.
Stats is easy as a subject. Not much to cover in this course, but hes a little dry and i struggled to stay awake most days. Dropped the last few weeks because i fell behind on online homework. as long as you keep up youll do fine. his flaw is that hes just boring. kind of short with you when you ask questions. Also seems a little old to still teach
He's not necessarily a strict teacher. However, his classroom rules are a bit ridiculous. The class rules are very similar to highschool: assigned seating, no cellphone use, you need to email him notes you take on laptops. He also teaches as if his students are middle school students. I get a lecture in basic Algebra ( 6 x 5 30) with every lectur
Great professor, the material wasn't easy but he's very clear and really cares that his student understand it. He lets students bring in one page with formulas for every exam he does, which is really great! Overall a great teacher and make Stats enjoyable for me!
Awful, Awful, Awful !! One of the worse professor I've ever had the JC. He wasn't helpful and never pulled up MyMathLab when having HW issues, he wanted us to being in the entire HW problem written out and maybe he would help. Lectures were boring, unclear and there are no STUDY GUIDES given before an exam. He also doesn't believe in review days!
I am a terrible test taker and with that said this is my 3rd time taking Stats,2nd time with Spencer. He truly is a fair grader, when you try it shows at the end of the semester and on tests. He gives points if you know what you're doing yet miss a part of the answer. If you don't like structure don't take the class. He cares if you care.
If you like to write a lot, then you should take his class. BECAUSE YOU WRITE ALL OF YOUR MYMATHLAB HOMEWORK DOWN. SO if you like that, go ahead. Also assigns homework on top of homeworks like MATH15 is the only class you're taking. Quizzes are every week and the MyMAthLab questions don't even offer you help and it's honestly so irritating.
He takes you through tiny baby steps through problems that take up most of the class (to the point he's skipped the break several times), he repeats himself where we don't need it, not clear on the more complicated problems. Sometimes there was too much homework to handle because he makes you write everything out and will mark you if you don't.
Really takes the time to make sure you understand a topic. Does assign a lot of homework but you will know how to do it after the lectures. Doing the homework did make the subject easier to understand so I didn't mind it. He made me really enjoy Stats! I would definitely take his class again.
