young and clear, talks and write fast during lectures, but knows the materials well, very well organized/planned prof and teachs good. marks hard sometimes on midterms, but overall, very good stat professor

Good prof but incredibly hard tests/final. Know your stuff because you won't pass even if you skip on one thing. Don't bother buying the textbook he provides plenty of practice and worksheets online. Mine is still in it's plastic wrap.
Interesting, seems to enjoy what he's teaching. The class is hard, his midterm was brutal, but his final was similar to the practice, so not so bad. You have to go to class and you have to do all the work, if you don't, you don't stand a chance.
You'll do well as long as you show up and do the work. Not too many surprises on the tests, but very, very thorough. Overall, nice guy (and not too hard on the eyes either) who expects a lot from his students, but will help you as long as you're smart enough to ask for it.
Very very good stats prof. however midterm was super hard. know your stuff and pay attention in class if you do, you'll do fine. overall excellent teacher but hard tests
Definately one of his kind, this guy is amazing and teaches with passion, he knows his stuff and don't screw around like many others. One of the better profs in my whole degree of 40 courses.
HE KNOW HIS STUFF WELL. U CAN EASILY GET 85-90% IN THE EXAMS IF U STUDY HIS NOTES AND EXAMPLES,THE OTHER 10% IS A LIL TRICKY REQUIRE A LIL BIT MORE THINKING...

Insanely hard tests... good teacher.
EXTREMELY passionate about the course. It's very important to show up to every class or it does get confusing. Textbook is more for extra help, but not necessary. MUST KEEP UP WITH THE WORKLOAD. If you do everything assigned, there are no surprises on tests and exams.
Obviously nobody here has taken MATH 323 with Jim. He makes this class nearly impossible, with his assignments that take 20 hours to do. I won't disagree with how passionate he is about statistics, but he's so passionate that he covers so many obscure examples (all of which are examined) and the textbook is just too general to study for his test.
Very good professor with high expectations. You have to really work hard for your mark in the class, and skipping is a huge no. Does a good grandma impersonation.
This class went by so much faster than I was expecting. Stallard is a cool, clear, funny guy and he definitely won't go easy on you. Listen (hard) and you'll be fine. Oh, and don't skip. Ever. He covers a lot of ground each class.
Good teacher. Print off his notes and fill them in like he tells you to. He gives you lots of problems but do them because honestly, if you do you won't be surprised by anything on tests or quizzes.
Really good teacher who knows his stuff and wants YOU to know your stuff as well. Quizzes are bearable, but midterm is impossible. Final is decent. Do what he assigns and you'll do well.
He is a great Prof. He really wants his students to learn and gives many examples. if you do the wuestions he asks and put some effort in you should do fine. Definately approachable during office hours. Suggest him over all others.
...wrong course name...He is a great Prof. He really wants his students to learn and gives many examples. if you do the wuestions he asks and put some effort in you should do fine. Definately approachable during office hours. Suggest him over all others.
Stallard is a great prof! Very passionate and dedicated. Dont buy the textbook he posts all of his notes online. Tests are relatively easy with a few challenging questions, if you study you will have no problem.
He's a great prof, easy notes as long as you print them off. tests are fair but often are very time consuming. Textbook is not needed... Attendance is a must, but who wouldn't want to go when Jim is sooo fine!
sometimes, he's too rude to stand. he would assume that you cheated in exam if you didn't follow his way to solve probs.
Stallard is a great prof but he expects WAY too much. His midterm and final are brutal! We had a 56% avg on the midterm and he thought that was okay. He refuses to curve marks and he even had a trick question on the final. If you want to learn alot, take him, if you want a good grade, DONT
Knows his stuff, knows how to teach it. Quality instruction. Conversely, VERY high standards, no curving, BRUTAL tests. Lectures are fast paced, TONS of content, and requires nightly practice, particularly if you`re not mathematically inclined. Not the prof for you if you are even remotely lazy or skip classes. Go in work HARD or pass on Stallard.
The prof is quite thorough but has high expectation and is HARD. What you get is what you get. Doesnt allow for makeups nor curves. Great prof is you really want to learn the material thoroughly otherwise i wouldnt recommend it.
Awesome teacher, his quizes are easy, the midterm and final are hard. He assigns a ton of practise problems but as long as you know how to do his examples in class you should be set. Make sure you go to every class
Jim has a real passion for statistics, so i don't blame him for testing difficultly. Mathematical statistics isn't easy, but at least he makes it interesting! Be prepared to spend a lot of time studying for Math 321/323, but do so knowing that you'll be VERY well prepared to write the Society of Actuaries Exam P when you're done.
Pretty good prof, REALLY, REALLY, HARD MIDTERM AND FINAL!! You have to do every single practise problem (usually assigns about 70-100 questions for every 2 weeks) to do well. Simply cannot be lazy to do well in his classes.
Holy smokes, this was a tough course. GO TO ALL THE CLASSES! Do all the practice problems, and you'll ace the quizzes. Midterm was tough. Make sure you understand the notes 100% and at least make an attempt at the practice questions!
Simply Stallard is the BEST! If you show up to classes and do the assignments you will do well in this class! He doesnt surpise you and he gives extra review sessions for finals! The class was awesome!
Make sure you attend his classes every time because his notes and examples wouldn't be the same without it. He's a great prof, explains everything very thoroughly. He has a real strong passion for stats, so his quizzes and exams may be challenging. Do your homework and study the notes and you'll do great!
An EXCELLENT prof! He absolutely loves stats, and when your done his class you will know stats in and out. Very hard class, however he is a very fair marker so you won't be cheated.
He has a serious ego problem, he will make an effort to belittle anybody asking questions he feels are stupid and throws in things he feels are common knowledge such as the number of spaces on a roulette wheel (It is not standard everywhere in the world) and refuse to tell you this when it is on a test and docks you big marks for not knowing
One of the better profs for statistics. Challenging midterm and final, but not impossible to do very well. Fair prof, easy to understand, but studying is a must.
This prof is horrible. He doesn't teach you any concept at all. he just runs through example after example after example, without you actually understanding any of what your doing or why. Without the prep 101 course I probably would have failed this class. I learnt nothing from Stallard. It was the prep course that got me my B- overall.
Stallard is a prick. the final is impossible and he wants people to fail. he has a cocky know it all jock attitude and treats students poorly. his course covers so much stuff that other classes dont. avoid this prof at all costs. go take it from someone who actually cares about helping students
I took this course thinking it would be okay cuz hes a good teacher, but this prof is too intense. His final was so long that most kids didnt finish and he docks marks for EVERYTHINGGG. so if you think partial marks will save u, they wont. i think he forgot he was teaching a 200 level course!! Too difficult.
Terrible prof. For all quizzes you have to use minitab and for the final and midterm you have to use all the formulas so basically have to learn two courses. Avoid him like the plague.
Worst and hardest prof i have ever had in my life. He thinks that he is better than the rest of the world. His ego is so big its a miracle anyone can fit in the class room. Dont take a class from him unless you want a significant dent in your gpa
Im going to keep things short and sweet. Dont take this class unless you want to do 3 hours of stats every night. If you end up having to take the course from him, prepare not to finish the final or the midterm. His practice final is extremely easy compared to the real one so dont get your hopes up when studying it.
Impossible class. Stallard tries to trick you by wording questions funny in the hopes that you will fail. He also disrespects students and treats them like crap when they ask a question. Its nothing short of a miracle that he got a teaching award. I guess it shows how great the teaching at the u of c is.
you should attend ALL classes. do all homework questions. however, there is no guarantee you would get a good mark in his exams. he has a big ego problem, very hot and wanted to be funny too but students are not comfortable with him!! girls like him SO much!
Unless you're amazing at statistics (math or logic), 213&217 is hard. You'll need to spend a lot of extra time doing everything he assigns to properly learn everything. Print out his notes and go to class, because there are some things he says there that aren't mentioned in his notes that you print out.
Best prof I've ever had. Most challenging class I've ever taken. He gives clear notes showing several ways a problem can be asked and answered. He is passionate about stats so won't pass you for showing up. Tests are challenging. He's incredibly approachable and will spend as much time as necessary outside class to help you understand. Do the work
do NOT take a class with him. he covers way more material than any other prof but doesn't teach any concept. class time is spent entirely on examples that look nothing like the questions on tests and you cannot understand the concept behind them because you never learnt it. the final is way too long. im a fast test writer and i barley finished.
Great prof, really passionate, but a very hard marker. If you are in business and must take more stats/math classes he will give you a really solid base in stats. Otherwise avoid him, as he expects more than most other profs and you will have an easier time somewhere else.
Very very hard marker. You need to know your stuff in and out and do a lot of examples. The final and midterm are much harder and different questions that are class examples or on the quizzes. Stallard does know his stats better then anyone.
Quizzes in 217 are easier than 213. However, the midterm and final are much more difficult. You must know your stuff inside and out b/c timing is critical. You should practice a lot of questions to make sure you do well. He is a fair marker on tests but the final that i had was really uncalled for. You have to be quick in the exam! lots of material
Easily one of the best teachers at the U of C. Very challenging class.. if your taking 323 or 321 check out UCAS, its worth it.
BEST STATISTICS PROF hands down. Lectures were very organized and extremely clear. Warns you ahead of time about what's on quizzes, midterms and finals. Not a hard class but LOTS of material... practice practice practice to make sure you are fast enough otherwise you'll run out of time. Textbook/Clicker needed but it helps ALOT
BORING AS H.....LLL... Monotone voice sleeping in class is unavoidable. Difficult to grasp concepts the way he explains them. Makes easy stuff super complex and uneeded. totall non hotty.... that is all
Class very hard, not made any easier by the lack of proper teaching. Goes way too fast for concepts to be grasped properly. easily one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. and the hardest teacher I've ever had.
He is an amazing prof. Truly passionate about what he teaches. Make sure you go to class and do the problems he assigns from the text and you should be fine. Very approachable and helpful if you need extra help. Loved being in his class!
He is a great prof, very clear and easy to understand. He gives great notes and quizzes similar to practice questions he assigns. However, final and midterm extremely hard and long. If you don't write fast you will run out of time.
Very good prof, however he goes way to fast sometimes and covers a lot of material. The midterm and final are hard so make sure you know exactly what you are doing or you will run out of time. Study, study, study!
If you expect to get a grade higher than a C in this class, you probably want to stay away. He's an insteresting prof, but his tests are borderline insane. In comparison to the quizzes, the final and midterm feel as if they were written in a foreign language. He also refuses to scale marks whatsoever, despite the difficulty of his tests.
A decent teacher but definitely not one you want to take a class with if you're not willing to put in maximum effort. His tests and quizzes are exponentially harder than those of profs teaching the same class. He is cocky, which makes him intimidating to approach. On top of everything, his final is KILLER. Don't recommend.
Highly recommended. Very clear when teaching examples in class. Quizzes are very similar to examples he does in class. Midterm is easy if you understand the examples he does in class, but work fast! Final was a little harder than expected but not impossibe so study hard and you will be fine!!
Holy crap. Hardest math class I have taken in my math degree thusfar. Take his class if you're willing to work your butt off, its worth it. Tests are hard as hell. On the plus side, he is passionate about teaching and easy to understand. If you can survive his class, you can survive anything.
This is a difficult class with Dr. Stallard. The tests are EXTREMELY hard and you must work very quickly. If you can't write tests quickly and efficiently I probably wouldn't take this course with him. Take your grade which you typically get in courses and knock it down a few letters or so. His lectures can be interesting.
If you want to learn, this is the real deal. This guy is great at teaching. He rewards those who work hard in this class. Textbook is not required, his in-class notes are better! His quizzes are easy if you study. Having said that, his midterm and final are super hard. Key hints? STUDY HARD IN CLASS AND DO IT QUICK!
Hard tests,But the best teacher available.Takes the pain in helping you out.If you really want University Education take him.But if you just wanna get through the AVOID
If you don't have the mind for probability, this class will be a nightmare. HOWEVER, Stallard is hands-down the best teacher you could take for this class. Very understandable in lectures & good notes. He doesn't scale anything because he REWARDS HARD WORK AND EFFORT. If you do the assigned questions from the book and ask questions, you'll do FINE.
bad: tests are a little harder then others good: can actually understand him, notes are very clear, he explains everything amazingly, for a weeder course like stats 213, he is by far your best pick for a prof out of other choices
had him for both 213 and 217. like what other people said, his tests are hard. but after experiencing other profs, realized that he can really teach. go to lectures. understand his examples in his notes, you should be ok. His tests questions are like his examples. If you really want to do well, go to his OH and ask questions!
my friend who studies really hard everyday got c.. everyone else got c-. even 2 dumb girls got c-. even a hard working girl who has taken the course 2 times got b-
The best at explaining things. If you go to the lectures and study you will succeed. Pay attention to the examples he does in class as they are often used in the tests. Tests are extremely fair. He provides questions for you to do as practice in the textbook but I found them unnecessary. I just studied the notes, quizzes, and exams and got a B+.
Stallard is the best prof you could get for a stats course, he explains things extremely well. Just go to class and make sure you study his examples. You dont even need the textbook
Surprisingly arrogant but he is VERY straight forward. If you go to his class and make sure you understand all class and tutorial examples you don't even need the textbook. His tests are taken straight from his lecture and tutorial examples so if you understand those you should do well. Not a very nice guy but a good prof.
Attention actuarial science majors: Yes, it's true that Stallard's 321 course is very challenging but if you take the time to do well in his course, you will be thanking him when you go on to write Exam P offered by the Society of Actuaries. He does an excellent job of preparing students for the exam. And for the record, it's possible to do well.
A great professor, he makes the course easy to understand. Entertaining in lectures, with clear examples and expectations. A great teacher and a good guy. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!
Great professor, extremely clear about course content, makes material straight forward and easy to understand.Provided time for final review, extremely helpful.Course itself isn't hard but not easy either, make sure you keep up with course content and you'll be fine.
Extremely clear and concise professor. recommend you get to know him and in turn he will get to know you-otherwise he is very intimidating. allows you to print note packages prior to class. Midterm is ridiculously long for a 50mon class and the final was hard. study in a group and use your TA! attending Stal's OH are a good idea as well-be prepared
Extremely good prof. Tests and quizzes are hard but fair, so study hard and be sure to know Minitab when required. Lectures are fun to attend and notes are crystal clear. Recommended!
Stallard is the best Statistics Prof you'll get. He prepared us very well for the final (which he wrote). As long as you study the notes and pay attention you don't need to buy the textbook. His midterm is hard to finish in 50 minutes but his final seems like a breeze at the end of the semester. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS!
Fantastic guy, very helpful, excellent teacher and extremely respectful. However, he does have very very high expectations. If you do all the homework questions you will do reasonably well on quizzes and midterm but the final was ridiculously hard. Be warned he is a VERY picky marker, as he will tell you himself.
His notes are amazing and really clear. He explains stuff really well. He will go kinda fast but if you pay attention and listen in class, you should be able to follow along. His quizzes and lab assignments are hard. So if you take his class, be prepared to work HARD - SUPER HARD.
Very step by step, logical explanations so concepts came across very clearly. exams involve lots of memorization, but easy enough besides that.
Tests are hard but he if you read all the notes that he has you will do well on the midterm and final. He is probably the best stats prof at the UofC I would recommend getting into his class. Just remember to review the notes prior to tests and you'll do fine
Somehow, even with all the spelling mistakes and the like, he still comes across as very clear. Really stresses the important/difficult points as needed. His notes cover everything in enough depth, and so long as you do all the questions on the lab exercises (not a lot to be honest), you're guaranteed to understand everything and do really well.
Although slightly itimidating, he is a great teacher! Always willing to answer any of your questions with clarity.
Stallard's notes are sometimes confusing and tend to be long winded, but he provides a good explanation during lecture.
Taking Stallard's class is not an easy A, but if you attend all his lectures, and do all the assigned work, you'll get a good mark. He's a fair marker, and he is good at explaining concepts!
Textbook was not needed, the notes he provided in class were enough to get me an A- in the course. Stallard talks clearly and has some funny jokes sometimes. Probably the best stat prof you can get. I'd recommend a class with him.
Great professor, but the material is difficult and requires a lot work (compared to my other classes at the time). He really gets the important points across, and provides extra problems to work on. Don't bother getting the textbook.
Amazing teacher and quite funny - not to mention extreeeeeemely good looking! He is a hard marker, and will tell you that himself, but if you attend his class and do ALL the work he assigns then you should get a good grade. I ACTUALLY learned something in this class.
attendance is mandatory, the course moves relatively quickly and he doesn't post notes online (only the questions, you have to fill in the answers). i was doing fairly average in the course, but the final completely wiped me out. it was unexpectedly hard in comparison to the midterms, so be prepared! also don't buy the textbook! useless and heavy
Stallard is the best prof, not to mention easy on the eyes! He is so clear with his examples and explanations. It is sometimes a challenging course, but if you put in the effort you will do well! He's so helpful and so easy to listen to. DON'T buy the textbook, I didn't use it a single time. Strongly recommend!
You don't really need the textbook. You must go to every lecture, you will benefit because he teaches very well. Taught the course well, and prepares you for 217. Midterms were fair, final was a little hard.
Very good prof. Good at explaining concepts and has very clear examples. His quizzes and exams are quite hard, although he does have high expectations. Final was very hard, but overall good prof.
Most organized, logically progressive class I have ever been in. engaging lecturer. tests are very fair. if you've been paying attention in class you're do fine. if not you're hooped. don't bother with the textbook but do go to class.
It seemed like a lot of people didn't even touch the textbook. I lived off that thing (and got an A+) because class was at 10am and I was too lazy to go most of the time. It was awesome that he followed the textbook. I took 321 with him and learned off class notes though. It's nice that you have the option to learn either way in his class :)
You have to take your time with this course and learn it thoroughly. The class is actually fun (no lie)! Sad to see it end but I dont miss assignment 2 and 6 -- uber long.
Book isn't necessary but attendance is a must! He has notes posted online to be followed during class. Exams were fair with no surprises. Had a FREE review session before the final to help us do well :) Prof knows his stuff
By far one of the hardest classes I've taken but Stallard gives you all of the material needed to do well on the exams. That being said, the textbook is completely unnecessary. His notes are very helpful and attending his classes is a must! Best prof to prepare you for STAT 217. Recommend!
Prof is decent but quizzes and exams are really hard. You need to put HIGH AMOUNT OF TIME if you wanna do well. IF your cpsc student then please don't take this course and take stats 211.
Everything is good, except the result. He is able to explain complex things in a nutshell. Very good sense of humor and choice of clothes. However, there is a huge gap between in class examples and midterms/finals. You guys forgot that you here not to teach 5 (out 100) superstars, but to give decent level of knowledge to every student (who works).
By far the best professor I have had for statistics. It was a privilege taking a course with him. He left me with a very strong foundation in statistics, which has already helped me in other classes and exams. Tests are not easy, but incredibly fair. Those who work hard and take the exams seriously are rewarded.
He is my all-time favourite stats prof. I'm not a math person, I struggle with statistics but Jim is incredibly helpful and has awesome teaching skills. He engages the class and always makes sure people are understanding his lectures. I also really enjoyed his class, he has a great sense of humour and is very compelling.
Jim as an very good teacher. He presents the content in a clear and comprehensive way, and provides an excellent understanding of the entire course. I would highly recommend taking any statistics course from him.
I love Jim as a prof! He's fantastic and makes the class very interesting. I definitely do not have an aptitude for math-related courses but he made this class very easy to understand. The tests were fair and marked in a good amount of time. He is very kind and always willing to help! I'd recommend him to anyone.
Jim is a fantastic Prof! He is clear, concise, interesting and very well organized. Textbook was unnecessary since he gave superb examples and explanations. He had clear expectations and his tests were fair. Try your hardest to take his class, he is one of the best!
Bar none MATH 321 with Jim had the best structure, organization, and presentation of a course I have ever taken. Having known several people who've had to repeat this course, I was expecting it to be a lot harder. The notes are so robust it allows you to cover a lot of material and perhaps that adds to the difficulty. Overall great prof.
Stats is really hard, and Stallard does no favours. Class average for Midterm 1 was 52%, no curve. He knows a lot about stats and is pretty clear. I recommend going to every class. Textbook is not needed. Definately need to put in some time to do well in his class.
Stallard does have an ego problem, and it does make him somewhat intimidating to approach. He is crystal clear during lecture which is nice, but he moves at a very fast pace. It can make it difficult to understand what's happening. The midterm and final are INSANE. Far too long and difficult to not grade on a curve which he doesn't! Avoid him.
proof by example
Super fun and clear, loud voice and dresses niiiiiice. He answers questions so well and his assignments review anything learned in class and challenge you sometimes. If you dont have friends in this class thats good, because you need to focus instead of sharing answers and not knowing how to do a question.
Worst prof in the history of profs
Understands student needs
Good prof; clear lectures and good notes. Exams are fair but are only 50 minutes long and are somewhat rushed. He does not believe in curving grades. You get what you get. Also, lots of Tophat for bonus marks. Assignments are tough but help prepare you for exams.
Really good at teaching the material but the exams are tough. If you do all the assignments and labs it's manageable though.
no enough time to finish exam, and it's sooooo hard, too much questions.
This was an easy class but he made it unfair
I had a different prof, but I went to his review session and he was amazing. I sat there for three hours and didn't get bored at all. TAKE THIS PROF FOR STAT213. None of the other profs are good (at least what I've heard). I went to one review session and I wish I had him as my prof. If I had him, the final would be easy. Amazing and hilarious guy.
He was very clear and had good lectures. But he made the course way more difficult then it need to be, i would choose another prof if you have him.
Stallard himself is not that bad, he explains everthing in a clear and understood way. Also, the material is pretty OK, when you study it you feel like that's quite easy. HOWEVER, he makes exams hard and long enough to let you know you can't make it. You need to spend like 4 hours everyday to go through everything to make an A, and Final is insane
If you work hard, easily to get A.
Great prof. Easy if you put in the work
For those who are skeptical about taking Stats 213 with Professor Stallard, do not be if you are studious. His lectures are of high calibre. Anyone who is concerned with getting a high level of understanding regarding intro stats SHOULD take a class with him. I aced the mid-term so it is very possible to do well in this course. Medium workload.
Tough class does his best job to make sure you have a fair chance
If you're looking to learn stats, he is a great prof. Very good lectures, examples in class have close similarities to the assignments that usual correlate to the midterms. Kind of vague when asking for help via email, I recommend going to his office hours for help, he is usually quite good there. Test are hard and he will not curve.
hes chill
Provides you with amazing lectures, going to them is key to succeeding in the course. His assignments are hard at the start but provide you with good practice of the concepts learned in class. This class REQUIRES YOU TO PUT IN WORK in order to get a high grade. Midterm average was 51% (no curve). But with work getting a good grade is highly possible
He is an excellent prof, knows his stuff, but his tests are impossible.
Not a good prof. And a very rude one as well! Would not recommend
One of the best profs for stats. He is really clear with explanations and expectations. He is a tough marker but you should know what to expect as he tells you multiple times what to avoid doing on tests.
Great prof who knows exactly what he is doing. Attend Class. DO EVERYTHING he assigns, and you will do ok. If you don't, then expect a fail in his class.
He's a good prof, easy mid terms and final
Class with Stallard will not be a walk in the park. He really makes you stay on your feet and his lack of leniency towards grading will make you put in the necessary work effort to do well in his class. if you put in the hours, do practise questions, attend lectures AND labs, you should do fine.
It is hard to find a good stats prof at U of C. Jim is one of them. Has a sense of humor so lectures are not that boring. Every aspect of the class was fair, do what he tells you to and you will do well. Again take him for stats if you get the chance
One of my favorite profs I've had. Put in the effort that he asks and you will find that stats is easy and kinda fun. Had him for both 213/217, would recommend taking him if you care about actually learning stats, he comes off as intimidating in 213 but he softens up in 217.
Jim doesn't curve marks when he should - even when his tests were obviously too long. I spent so long on my first midterm correcting all his errors. First midterm the average was 50% and he didn't curve. I got 51%, however I ended up getting 99% on the final (which he wrote). So he must have taught me something.
very rude without professional manner. He answers your question only when he are in good mood, otherwise he asks you to get out of his office. long tedious assignment can drive you crazy, seriously!
Good prof. Tests aren't easy but he lays out the ground work to get an A in the class. You follow what he says and you will succeed
He is a great prof, he is straightforward and gets to the point. I didn't think I was going to enjoy this class at first but I really did.
Taught clearly, lots of examples. Tough grading and tough tests!!! But lays out the ground work to help you get there, really seems to be enjoy the topic he teaches. Loved him, would want all my stats courses through him if possible!
Stats 217 is definitely a harder course that requires lots of PRACTICE. Jim is very clear about what is expected from students. You can get an A as long as you do everything he tells you to do. Assignments and labs are straight forward and can boost your marks easily. Participate in top hate questions for bonus marks! Great prof and cares a lot.
He teaches materials very clearly and his note print outs and in class examples are very helpful. His use of top hat in lecture forces you to be attentive. His midterms are notoriously more difficult than the other stat profs and since he is head of the department expect your final to be too.
He knows his stuff and is a good teacher, but he makes the tests way too difficult. He doesn't curve either, so you need to do literally every example, lab problem, midterm question, and all other questions you can get your hands on to practice.
Stats is a hard subject but Stallard teaches really well, cares for students' learning. Midterms are brutal, his class tends to do much better on the final because he writes it and prepares you for it- but compared to other classes you'll probably have a lower average going in to the final
Daddy Jim is such a good prof. The quality of his teaching is great and he is approachable in class and outside of class. His lectures are crystal clear which makes STATs very doable. His notes are amazing, but he doesn't post anything on d2L so attend class. He has harder midterms than other profs, so prepare to study.
if you want to pass, he or Robinsons are the only lectures worth attending. Teaches concepts well and tests fairly, has a good sense of humour as well during class
Jim conveys course material very well and is able to make sense of a difficult course and concept. However, he treats his students with no respect - if you attend his office hours he is condescending and impatient. His tests are VERY difficult and he does not curve. His teaching ability may be worth taking his class, but be prepared to work HARD
If you care about your GPA, don't take it with Jim. Unlike other profs he doesn't curve tests nor does he give you any assignments for extra credit like others do. He knows his stuff, and his lectures were direct and straightforward, however his tests were more difficult than that of others. He's good, but if you want high grades, he's not the guy.
Took STAT 217 with Jim a few semesters ago, and while I got a B- in STAT 213, I ended STAT 217 with an A+. Put in the work, review the notes everyday and you will honestly do well in the course. Don't expect to get a good grade if you don't put in the effort.
Stallard is the best stats prof. His class is harder, but it pays off for the final. He explains all the concepts well and walks through lots of examples
Take STAT 213 with Jim. He phrases questions on the tests exactly the same as he does in class so pay attention. His midterms are harder than other profs, but they're fair and you can definitely ace them. He doesn't curve tests, but his class average for the final is always higher than the other lectures because he actually knows how to teach.
Amazing notes and lectures. Must attend lectures to take the notes down. Very clear and detailed notes. Did not use textbook. Final was really hard.
He is very good at teaching statistics easily the best stats prof but the one thing I was upset about was that he doesn't curve our marks like every other stats prof. I consistently did better than my friend in another class doing 10% on every exam, but because of the curve we ended up with the same letter grade.
always shows he has stronger muscles of body than his brain in senior level stat...
Stats 205 was a mandatory class I had to take for my degree but professor Stallard made it possible. If you do everything he says, practice the labs, follow his notes word for word, you will do well. Everything on his tests is covered in class, so just study! He makes you work for your marks, but for the final you will be fully prepared!
He didn't explain the theories very well and made things further more complicated, instead he stuffed you with tons of questions.
when students ask him questions, he is intended to place his foot on his desk suddenly. what the hell is this for a lecturer?
Assignments are time consuming (easily 10+ hours for most of them). Class worthwhile (applied statistics focus). Final was hard (need to be quick at recognizing concepts as well as performing operations with R). Professor was helpful and informative. Don't agree with others' ratings but not shocked (not everyone did well). WOULD take class again.
Jim was honestly the best professor I've ever had. This course was very difficult but you can do well if you are willing to work. He definitely prepares you for upper-level Stat/Math courses by really instilling the concepts in your brain. My final grade wasn't great but that was due to my laziness, not his teaching. Even still, I learned a ton.
Jim doesnt seem to understand that many students are required to take his course and takes personal offense when people dont prioritize stats. He doesnt upload completed notes and refuses to use D2L or upload grades. Also uses weekly lab quizzes instead of the grade boosting lab exam other sections have. Just not a good prof to have for this
If you really pay attention in class and do ALL the practice assigned you'll do really well. Great prof but one of the tougher courses foresure
Jim definitely knows his stuff but as previous reviews mention he tests a lot harder and refuses to scale which is wildly unfair when other sections get that sweet sweet bell curve. The course structure is mostly at fault for the bad reviews, teaching students to rely on minitab all semester and then throw an all-written final at them is ridiculous
Amazing prof. Explains concepts very well, reinforces knowledge through examples and tophat. Practice at home you will do great. Refuses to curve, but final exam average is highest out of all other classes. If you actually want to learn statistics, go to him. Very clear about what he expects from students, and provides many exam review materials.
Go to lectures and pay attention! Tests are hard but it's all in his lectures. Memorize exactly how to write interpretations and conclusions. Know how to do things but also understand why - tests are mainly why and not how. Go to the Haskayne tutorials, Sean is great help! Actually try for the labs cause they're actually helpful.
When are you going to finish your phd?
Stallard teaches STAT 217 better than any other prof, but the tradeoff is that his tests are harder and he marks much harsher than other profs. He's also not the nicest guy to seek help from. You'll learn a lot but expect to put in a ridiculous amount of work into one class.
Stallard was an amazing stats prof. You have to work hard to get a good grade, but if you do everything he says and pay attention in class, you will do well. His tests were hard but very fair. Everything on the tests was covered by him in class. He is very clear with his expectations and provided very helpful study guides. Strongly recommend.
Honestly if you just do what he tells you to do you'll for sure get an A.
For those who are passionate about the courses they take with Jim, he will be exactly what you're looking for. He's extremely engaging and enthusiastic about material. In fact he could easily reach the back of a 300 seat auditorium with his voice alone, as he often raises it to effectively provide emphasis. Jim is an abrasive gift to pedagogy.
Teaches the class clearly and simply. Tests are exactly what you expect and what he covers. Second quiz was very difficult but other than that it was an easy class.
He is a fair marker and offers a lot of opportunities & tips to succeed in his class. Just do what he says and you will be fine. The only criticism I would give is that he is very condescending and rude in person and in emails. If you must contact him, don't be surprised if you are somewhat patronized. Other than that, he is clearly one of the best
Jim is a beauty, hes interesting in lecture, and drives the concepts home. His notes are really detailed, all you gotta do is go to class and fill them in. Do what he tells you to and youre golden.
Stallard explains things very well and very clearly. Class material had good flow and made sense as he taught it. I learned more than I thought and did better than expected. He makes great study guides to help prepare us for exams. Do what he suggests in terms of homework, attend all classes if possible and complete your notes and you'll be fine!
Stallard is a great prof. I was so lucky to have had him for stats 205, as I suck at math. You have to work really hard in this class but his notes are so good, he gives great study guides and his expectations are clear. Participate in top hat, study hard and follow his instrcutions and you will be fine.
I bounced between really disliking Jim Stallard and thinking he was alright. Overall, he was a good instructor. His lectures and notes were excellent, although sometimes overloaded. His biggest faults are that he is patronizing towards his students and is overly particular about certain details, and lax on others.
He's a good teacher. I feel like I know the content well. But his tests are so freaking long for the amount of time that he gives you. Like waaaaaay too long. So I don't know how well I'm going to do in this class.
The assignments take hours and hours, but they're really not that difficult as they're almost the same as in class examples. Stallard always explained everything well and he often showed us how to do examples by hand and with R which was helpful. The project was also fun and it was marked fairly. Final was open book and he told us what he'd test.
at the beginning of the semester i loved this guy, however every single interaction (outside of just attending lectures) i had with him following the introductory lesson, i realized more and more how rude he is. When students ask questions over email, he will accuse you of not attending. during the isolation period he still assigned timed tophat Qs
The way that Stallard demonstrates the course material can be really difficult to follow along/understand at certain times. He is knowledgable but his lectures are not as engaging. His exams and assignments are difficult and he sets a tough grading criteria as well. It also seems like there's a lot of pressure to do TopHat questions all the time.
Stallard is a stern professor, but quite good at teaching. Statistics isn't the most exciting thing, but you find yourself paying attention to answer tophat questions (which are for a bonus 3% to your grade). Exams can be a bit of a time crunch but are definitely doable with time to spare if you know your stuff and kept up with the material.
Lectures were all prerecorded except for non-mandatory Friday Lectures. He was pretty decent at explaining concepts but really lacked in care, effort, or motivation. It seemed he never wanted to be there, was less than helpful (never explained), way too lazy (misspelled even on midterms), couldn't be bothered with student success, very lacking prof
As stated in other reviews, he is very rude and condescending towards students who ask for help. During his live classes on zoom, he mutes everyone and doesn't look at the chat. Students cannot ask questions because of this. He is very inconsistent with his rounding in answer keys. This means that students get their correct answers marked wrong.
Easily the worst prof Ive ever had. Patronizing, rude, doesnt answer any questions in the zoom chat. Refuses to post answers to practice midterms and wants students to use the discussion boards. The content is not hard but somehow the exams are killer. His lectures are informative though. This shouldnt be hard but hes determined to make it hard.
He's super conceited. He doesn't care about the needs of any student, and doesn't listen or provide any accomodation whatsoever. His expectations for tests and assignments are extremely unclear and he switches up everything he says.
This is single handedly one of the worst classes I've ever had the pleasure of attending. Not only is Stallard rude, condescending, and down right lazy but he also has completely different grading criteria than other profs teaching the exact same course. What a joke. Why does he think his terrible curriculum with confusing information is better?
Hes a really great prof and explains concepts nicely; however, this course is definitely heavy. There are weekly quizzes, assignments, labs and questions. However, if you stay on top of it you will do great! Quizzes/midterms/final is a combination of multiple choice and fill in the blanks.
Professor Stallard is a good teacher but he loves to make your job harder. He usually doesn't answer his emails. Once the website crashed during a quiz and he didn't even try to help me so I got 0. The workload is massive, so watch out. Even though I understood the concepts, it was impossible to demonstrate my knowledge . So I had to drop out.
Stallard was one of my best profs. I always knew where we were in the course and I never worried about not knowing which lectures to watch each week. Though it is a bit of a tough course requiring lots of work, you will always be on top of everything if you follow the super clear schedule. Organization is key for success and Stallard provided this.
Stallard is an organized prof but thats the only positive thing I can say. His tests are hard and there's multiple quizzes + assignments every week. I've emailed him asking about his steps during questions and hasn't replied to me once the whole semester. No cap the TA is more help than he is. If you're new to stats DO NOT recommend him
Stallard communicates material effectively, and lecture examples and lab quizzes are exactly like the questions you'll see on exams. He's pretty impatient and rude, but if you sound Very positive in your emails, you'll receive good responses. Probably the best-organized online course I've seen - daily checklists with everything you need to cover.
He is organized in his delivery, but please save yourself the hassle and don't take the coin toss. Had over 300 tophat questions for a measly bonus of 3%. Final average with 4 questions removed was a staggering 48. Has spelling and grammar mistakes rampant in midterms and the final. Unresponsive and often downright rude in communication.
Stallard was so rude and not helpful at all. He was always inconsistent when it came to rounding which would make your answers wrong. He made us use Statcrunch the whole semester and on the final not even 1 question could be answered using it. I had more homework for this class alone than my whole university career.
I found Stallard rude and acted almost annoyed that he had to teach us. He was lazy with proof reading and inconsistent rounding which confused students. I am good at math so an A was not hard for me but felt bad for my peers who had strengths elsewhere. Grades were hard cut offs which is dumb and he was just really rude. Go with another prof
If you do not need this class do not take it! If you have to take it find a different prof. Dr. Stallard would not respond to emails, would not allow students to unmute during class to ask questions and during live classes would act rudely towards the students. Did have D2L checklists which were very nice to follow online.
Unengaged with his students and his teaching. Communication with him leaves a sour taste as he takes forever to get back to you, and is rude and dismissive in his replies. Course structure was disorganized. Dropped the course bc I didn't get my disability accommodation until halfway through, which he blamed on me despite the 'rona delays at fault.
BEST PROFFESOR EVER!Professor Stallard is an exceptional teacher. He is so helpful, and conveys the material really well. The content can be tough, but I'm happy to say he makes it easier to grasp. Lots of assignments but "a little bit of DATA everyday keeps the C's and D's away" (JS).Ppl complain bout the textbook usage but its a good book to have
1 Live class per week - essentially a tophat quiz 2 checklists a week , about 4/5 videos each. 10 mins per video 9 assignments (Kinda long) tophat with each checklist. All writtenexams Lots of work in the course but not difficult. Mostly stat217 in rstudio. He makes sure you learn with all the videos and assignments. pretty good prof!
Stallard would explain concepts very well (both by hand and in R) but assumed students had a more technical backgrounds so would skim over things I had never learned. It took extra time to learn material and the assignments were very long but fair. If you put in the work, this class is extremely rewarding.
This is a guy that will teach you statistics, he is a very respectable and fair professor. One of the best I have ever had.
He has unset office hours so it's impossible to get help. He does not care about his students. He teaches stats at a medicore level but then offers no help and makes you buy a 95$ pointless program. There's better teachers out there
Statistics is seem like such a boring subject but Professor Stallard made it so interesting. His lectures are very valuable and you can tell that he really cares about teaching properly. Midterms have way too many questions for the limited time given, but the questions are fair. If you put in the work, you will be fine. Best prof ever!
Stallard goes so fast in classes that it's hard even to try and understand anything. I would go over everything myself after and understand it way more doing it on my own. The TA was my only hope and doing midterm exams in 50 mins with a number of questions is horrible. We used Statcrunch to get answers but for the final, we couldn't even use it.
Dr. Stallard is an excellent prof and you can tell he really loves statistics. He is always cracking jokes which helps when you're stressed! Although I did find it hard to follow him in class, he has LOTS of homework/practice (top hat, assignments, textbook, ect) to practice and get confident with the material.
Great professor but never again. You will not survive if you don't put in the time to do well. 1 test and 1 assignment per week, 2 midterms and a final. You will absolutely fail if you don't show up for classes. Also, $100 textbook is mandatory for the software you need in this class. (statcrunch)
As a nursing student and as a person who finds math difficult this was honestly the worst class ever. It was extremely hard.(thats what she said) This class feels like full time job on top of a full course load. It is honestly a nightmare. It is so hard to do well. I failed the second midterm and am currently fighting for my life for the final. pfm
THIS IS THE WORST CLASS I WILL EVER TAKE, DO NOT RECOMMEND UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. Nursing students have it hard enough and he really just said "let me run them over with a 5 ton truck and then reverse for good measure". The concepts are not difficult but he does not know how to teach them. Save yourself, take Stat 213, you'll thank me later.
This prof will give you 8 assignments each worth 3% of your grade but take 15 hours to complete. It's quite ridiculous how much time/effort you have to put into these assignments just for them to be worth 3% of your grade. His email responses are pretty generic and won't help with the question you are trying to get answered.
This professor has been the worst professor I've had in my whole degree. He does not care about you as a student. His assignments very long (10-15+ hours) and there's one every week. The final was unfair and half the class failed (you must pass final to get a minimum C- by the way). I would avoid this meat head prof at all costs.
Professor Stallard was an excellent guide throughout our Data Science capstone projects this semester. His detailed feedback was both fair and constructive, which allowed us to improve our analysis skills and deliver quality results. This resulted in us completing a full-scale Data Science research project, from start to finish, with great success.
Taught an intro stats class as if we already had taken a stats class. Not accommodating at all. The midterm average was so low and he blamed us
Jim is all round a decent prof but his tone and communication is poor. He comes off as arrogent and dissmisive a majority of the time. Deadlines and presentation times shift around all the time. This is okay if he does it but not much room for error as a student. It is the TAs that make this class good.
This guy was always dismissive and disrespectful. I can't believe uofc still keeps him around. I had to redo the class and ended up getting an A with another professor, stats seemed to make far more sense without him. Just like others mentioned, his education style and attitude is so dismissive. Definitely take this class with someone else
Engaging lectures, but class is quite challenging. Utilize unstuck ai alongside the free textbook to stay on top of the material. Mandatory attendance helps, but prepare to invest significant time for top grades.
This professor .... makes you do ALL your homework on a website that you HAVE to spend 100 dollars on. Instead of adding the assignments on d2l, like a normal teacher, he decides to make you, as a broke uni student, "purchase" your homework. absolutely annoying.
Very bitter, not considerate, pants r too tight
The class itself is already hard and it does not help that the professor is one who 1 makes you pay to do homework and 2 have questions in class that he presents on top hat either based on a pre lecture video we had to watch or based on a concept or method he just taught and did not give us time to understand it.
this course is way too much. weekly assignments, quizzes, midterms, tophat homework during and after class. the worst part is no posted notes. we have to pay $100 to do homework and basically use an excel like app but he cant even post completed notes?? dude clearly knows his stats and is a good lecturer but he also comes off as having an attitude
The 2nd midterm he gave us was insanely long even though we only had 50 minutes of time. Miss class? Too bad, you fail. If you're a nursing student, just take 213 and not this shitty class. He's not accommodating, and it's as if he has an aversion to posting notes online lmao. Sometimes his solutions are literally incorrect. Inconsistent rounding.
u have to be there in order to fill out the notes cuz he does NOT post them online, so get ready to sit 3 times a week or get a friend who will give u their notes. if u r a nursing student, I REPEAT, do NOT take this class take stat 213 it will be the best choice of ur life PLS his midterms r so hard and the content is overcomplicated. I will fail
Save yourself. He is the worst professor you could possibly get for 205. If you get this man please switch out, take my suffering as an example. His lab quizzes are short and hard, and happen weekly, only giving you 25 minutes. His midterms make no sense, forcing you to speed through a 39 mark test in 50 minutes.
If 0 were a rating, I'd give this professor that. The course content itself is easy, but he makes it hard. Does not post notes. Makes you learn content outside of class on your own. Gives 25 minutes to complete lab quizzes. Midterms are out of 39 points and you get only 50 minutes. He blames the students for it though. Switch out immediately.
Despite what others say he is not a terrible professor if you attend class. If you know you struggle with attendance or have a busier schedule, I recommend taking a different course. As long as you attend class, the content is simple and explained well, and in-class participation through online questions includes up to 3% bonus grade. GO TO CLASS!!
Just go to class! Yes, he can be a tough grader, but like he's mentioned a lot if you just go to class and participate you will be fine. He even gives the option of getting an extra 3% on top of your final grade. He supplies lots of extra resources and so much practice outside of class. His lectures are clear and he teaches well.
Removed all resources online before the exam so students had no way of accessing them to study. Not in his office hours when he was supposed to be. Slow to answer emails, not accessible outside of class. Only has one way of explaining everything so good luck if you don't get it right away. Respected and knowledgeable man but not a great teacher.
Professor Stallard is a really wonderful and well respected instructor. His exams are fair and consistent in terms of difficulty. His office hours were incredibly helpful and it is clear that he is committed to the success of his students.
People say the prof is terrible for making us do a lot of work, but as much as I hated it I came to learn it was for our own benefit and I recognize this now. This course itself is pretty difficult and it will consume most of your time. If you're someone who doesn't perform well under pressure or you don't have time to attend all classes I'd switch
IF YOUR A NURSING STUDENT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Instead take the online version of STAT205 with another prof or take STAT213. Stalled definitely knows statistics, but depends on students to "study for 6 hours a day" to succeed in this course. His notes are confusing and not organized, and the assignments and weekly quizzes have ZERO correlation.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I found him so mean and derogatory. Quizzes and assignments have no correlation to what you're learning. Notes are terrible and you have to go to class. Midterms are hard and only 50 mins to write. Class avg was 55 on midterm 2 and he blames the students. Take STAT 213 or 205 with another prof.
I didnt mind the homework, but he was so condescending when it came to literally anything. If you dont go to class kiss your grades goodbye.
Overall a good prof with the intention of preparing students to get best grade possible. Downside is the course itself having brutal midterms where they give the student 50 minutes to write an exam that should take closer to 90 minutes to write. Stallard is a good prof with a very poorly designed stat 205 course. DO THE TOPHAT or he gets pissed
exams are straightforward and fair: if you study you should comfortably be able to receive at least an 80% unless you're used to daydreaming during your midterms you should be able to learn most if not all concepts in assignments very fair professor, don't complain because you didn't study or do any work.
Stallard clearly cares about his students, and makes it pretty obvious what's on the test and how to answer so as long as you give him half your attention you can easily get an 80 on the midterm. Uses a lot of tophat, and the textbook is mandatory if you want to be able to submit assignments which is annoying
If you're not religious before this class, pick one and start praying. It's easy if you keep up with it but Stallard purposefully adds way too many questions where there is NEVER enough time to double check your answers so... just pray for good luck tbh. Mind you, 7/8 of the class was still writing the final exam at the 2h mark during of Fall'24
Class is pretty easy as long as you put in effort! Exam content is exactly the same as questions done in class. Stallard goes fast but is clear and covers lots of practice questions that are extremely helpful for studying. Only complaint is that more time should be given for exams as you must work fairly fast to finish in time.
Worst course I have ever taken. Assignments are long, unclear, only worth 3%, and he is unhelpful when you ask questions. Final exam was very difficult to complete in time. Unclear about what he wanted on the project and was "confused" why the class was performing so poorly in the assessments. Charismatic in lectures but rude when you ask for help
Overall Stallard isn't a terrible prof despite what others say. You do have to go to class to understand the content and fill in the blanks because he doesn't post notes after class. He LOVES tophat so be prepared for those because he gives little time to actually answer the questions. Assignments took at least 10hours to do for only 3.5% each.
Horrendous course structure...8 LONG assignments make up 25% of your grade, each taking about 10-15hrs. The final was the same length as an assignment which he expected us to complete in 2hrs. A little more than half the class failed and it was a pass the final to pass the course, on top of a 35% group project with extremely vague instructions.
Echoing what others said. Long assignments that were not worth much. Very vague and unclear information on the term project. In fact, we did not know how it was weighted until the grade came out. And yeah good luck on the final cause you'll need it.
Easily one of the worst courses I've taken. Prof cancelled or didn't teach half the lectures, sometimes ignored the course outline (which isn't allowed), and provided rubrics that didn't match actual grading. Expectations were vague, and we were thrown into a capstone project with little to no foundational teaching. Avoid if you can.
Bro this guy is so annoying, he had us doing assignments and quizzes every week and when the ENTIRE CLASS did bad on BOTH midterms he still somehow found a way to blame us. He makes you use RStudio all semester just for it to not be available on the final. I would rather take this course 3 times over than take it with this guy ever again.
