He brought his cute dog to class. VERY interesting class!

Jim is the greatest teacher ever, he makes learning fun, and interesting for everyone!!
He is a fun professor, his classes are highly recommended!
He rambles on and on, but he means well. He genuinely cares about his students. But, he can be boring as hell

Very disorganized & spacy
YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO TO CLASS! All you have to do is buy his book for $10 and it contains the actual lecture notes that he reads during class! It is unbelieveable!
The lecture notes you can buy help, but you still have to go to class to watch the movies
WONDER DOG! Classes are interesting, applicable, and often involve class discussion. He teaches through accessible novels and naratives, taking a "pop culture" approach. Stanlaw has a great sense of humor.
Stanlaw is awesome!!! Everyone should take this class!!
panders
I hated this class- it could have been a better experience, but Stanlaw was completely disorganized and rambled on about BS that no one else cares about. I went to class half the time and got a B- he just doesn't care.
Fun class! First day he dressed like Indiana Jones--great appeal! I was surprised by how much I liked this class.
fun and easy class.

The class is very easy. I would buy the optional class notes. He reads almost directly off of it during class. He is more than willing to go over any test with you.
just bad
A little bit too disorganized and hurried for my tastes - I can see his appeal for some, but he definitely wasn't the right teacher for me. Jumps around a lot and doesn't take a stance on his topics.
This class is very boring, it's not very hard. I recommend buying the notes he put together! The tests are off that! He sometimes brings a dog to class! He talks fast and is dorky, but it's not too bad
Bring a pillow and sleep in the back
this had to have been the WORSE teacher I have ever had.. you have to go to class to watch the stupid movies and still will not do well on the tests.. AVOID this guy
He gave many examples.
the class itself was easy, the tests were unnecesarily difficult however. also, he is really disorganized and doesn't really haev a clue about how to give a clear lecture. AVOID THIS GUY!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Easy as hell!! You don't even have to come to class, just read his notes that he gives in the booklet.
Boring lectures, but it turns out they are not that necessary to go to. Eassssy.
Stanlaw can be a bit hard if you're not keeping up with the readings, but he's a funny guy and he really makes anthropology interesting. he's the reason I got into the major....
He's pretty quirky! Make sure you buy his notes he distributes, and go to his study sessions, and you will absolutely do well. He tries very hard to make students enjoy his class. I'm glad I had him for a teacher.
This class is pretty boring. Just make sure you see the videos he shows in class otherwise you don't really need to go. Buy his notes he sells (it has many typos) and read the books assigned. Go to the study sessions and you will at least get a B in the class. You also get to drop your lowest test. Its basically a blow off class.
THis class was a big joke. I never attended class and still got a B. All you have to do is have someone you know that is smart next to you and copy off them because the tests are the exact same. Easy grade.
This class is very interesting. Stanlaw is a good guy. Go to all the review sessions, he gives you word for word questions from the test.
wooow...so boring...a good chance for a nap! pay attention in class though because he will put stupid examples of ONE sentence he said in class on the quiz...stuuupid! i thought it was kinda a dumb class that put me to sleep, and i studied a lot and still got a b...so i would suggest NOT taking it.... or be ready to nap and do poorly!
Put it this way, I have never slept in a college course my 2 years at ISU, but ended up sleeping at least 70% of all lectures. I thought it would be an easy A, but had to study a good amount to get a B.
The professor is a great guy! He LOVES what he teaches. Problem is, he turns off all the lights and it's easy to fall asleep in class. Otherwise, study the guide he gives you, stay awake for the films and your set!
Most students got A's on test 1 which he said wasn't a problem. I thought he meant it. I also thought he was being a nice guy when he held a vote to not take test 2. The final grade was from tests 1 & 3 and participation. But test 3 was very difficult and he counted it twice. Because of his sneakiness I got a B instead of an A. Sneakiness rating =5
The class is pretty easy. buy the study guide, show up for the movies and read the books almost all hte answers for the test come from the short books he wants you to read and hte movies. He drops the lowest test score. I got an A and i slept during most classes
he puts a lot of jokes on the tests but less and less on them as the semester moves along. he's hard to pay attention to and speaks quickly so buy the lecture notes he has for sale. show up for videos and watch them and read the novels. that alone can make you or break you if you aren't good at guessing on tests. nice guy, boring class.
One of my favorite class my first semester at ISU. Lots of pretty girls in his class, now I am friends with one of them-made my semester really fun. Thanks professor Stanlaw!! Oh, about the class it was really fun, but I can see how others would fall asleep since it is dark. The professor is really passionate about what he teaches.
Stanlaw= Awesomeness. Except he's difficult to understand. One thing: read the books.
He's very disorganized and his tests aren't really over anything you'll ever really care about. It's a pretty easy A as long as you buy is notes. If you don't buy his notes, you're screwed. Just make sure to read and go to class.
Good man, easy class. Just go to the review sessions and you'll pass. They basically tell you the answer to each question in the exam, hot TA's too.
Easy class, lectures can seem kind of long. Easy tests, no textbooks, but you can buy his printed notes which are helpful. Had to read 2 novels, but they were easy & tests come straight from the books & notes.
Horrible teacher.Very scatterbrained and disorganized. Lectures are horribly boring and tough to follow.
I loved this class. The content was very interesting for me, but then again, I love culture. This class was the one that made me want to minor in anthropology. I highly recommend it, as well as Jim Stanlaw. :D
Easy class, make sure you buy his notes, they help out a lot. Tests are mostly on lecture, so I would recommend going to class. He drops one test, but not the final. There are two books to read, but I only read one since I could drop one of the tests. It wasn't bad, I actually enjoyed the book.
Interesting class. Learned a lot. Stanlaw is a funny guy.
This class is awesome if you are into cultures, human nature, and why people do what they do. We watched a lot of interesting films and documentaries and he always had cools slides during his lectures to make them more interesting. The tests are easy and straight from his notes (I recommend buying them). He's also quite hilarious.
If at all possible, DO NOT take this class. I was very interested before I stepped foot in the first day. He always turns thi lights practically off, doesn't go over exam material until 5 min before class ends the day before the test, makes rude comments. A friend of mine who is a 4.0 student couldn't get an A...if you get stuck here, buy the notes
He is experienced in his work, but talks directly from his notes that you can purchase. BUY the notes. Shows many videos in lecture, questions will be on test about videos and some class discussion. He is boring and hard to follow sometimes but go to class, and GO to the review sessions. Not hard to do well in this class just study the notes!
Worst class I've ever taken. We dont even have a textbook, just a notebook of his rantings and random thoughts shoved together with misspellings. I struggled to get a C. He is unclear and doesn't put up any notes in class, he just talks in a monotonous voice. Go to class because the tests are always on videos or specific things he said in class
I would not recommend this test. I am a good student and went to class but didn't do well on the tests. Repeats word for word from his handout book which I wouldn't have survived without so it is a MUST buy. Overall, do not elect to take this class unless you have to because it isn't worth it.
This class is okay. Make sure you buy the two novels and the notes that he makes for this class. It's almost impossible if you don't have the notes. It's kind of hard to stay awake because he turns off the lights. Overall, it was better than I expected.
not a class i would recommend, the teacher mumbles alot, and is quiet and hard to hear, also the lectures put half the people to sleep and the other half leaves early. you need to read the books and go to lectures to watch the movies shown.... avoid if possible
Somewhat hard class but he's a good teacher. He's cute and hilarious. HAVE TO BUY THE RED BOOK. It's a must. As long as you have that - you'll be fine. And go to the review sessions. I had no interest in this class and I'm getting a B... it's not THAT bad.
He makes absolutely no sense during lecture and he's impossible to understand. He sells his notes, but they're just as ridiculous as his lectures. His videos are pointless and extremely irrelevant. I tried to go to his office hours for help, all he did was tell me to rub the chair I was sitting in for luck. NEVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS.
Sometimes hard to understand, and lectures are very boring. But, overall this class is not very time consuming, but you do need to read the books he assigns for the exams. Go to review sessions for additional help because the notes in the red book he sells are not very useful. Most of his lectures are irrelevant to the notes in his red book.
Stanlaw is very funny, but to understand him you must sit close to him in lecture. Tests are not too bad, but you need to read the 2 novels to do well. He also offers a book that is his notes, which somewhat help. His notes are sometimes not clear, but it helps before the exam. The movies he shows in class are terrible. But easy B.
His lectures were beyond boring and made no sense. The notes he sold you in a book were useless because he jumped all over the place and never made sense. His power points were irrelevant. The movies he showed in class were so out of date you couldn't pay attention. He lacked in organization. When I went to see him for help he was useless.
Horrible, horrible, horrible class. You learn absolutely nothing and then the tests are super hard. Avoid at all costs. So confusing it's literally not even a legit class.
Avoid this class at all possible costs i'm a straight A student and am struggling. If you take it, buy the notes, they help somewhat but you should really go to class to make sure you can watch the videos. Take excess notes because the notes from the book are a useless pile of thoughts with mistakes in spelling and grammar His exams are pretty hard
Very hard to pay attention. During lectures he just goes on tangents that don't make any sense. He jumps around in packet so you can't follow along. Very unorganized. Wish He had a better outline and study guide. Would avoid Class if possible.
I must say that I absolutely disagree with most of the comments I've read here. I am an international student and I find both his lectures and tests EXTREMELY easy - so if you're an American, then this class should be nothing more than a piece of cake! I have learned so many interesting things without even realizing it because he made it so fun!
Anyone who didn't rank him well either A) has a less developed sense of humor or B) never showed up to class. Which is still not mandatory, he sells a copy of his class notes for 10$, and those are word for word the test questions. Incredibly easy A if you go to class at least 50% of the time, and he really knows his stuff, sometimes too well.
AVOID THIS CLASS! Not only do his lectures teach you little to nothing, his notebook that he sells you for $10 is disorganized and full of his ranting. His tests are somewhat easy, but structured poorly. His sense of humor is painful, and his movies are even worse. AVOID THIS CLASS, YOU'LL THANK ME LATER!
I loved this class. Stanlaw's lectures are so interesting because he actually knows what he is talking about. Buying the note packet is a must but the class really isn't difficult if you attend. I actually almost switched my major from Fashion Merchandise to Anthropology after taking this gen ed...
Stanlaw is awesome. He makes the class very interesting, although the $10 notebook of class notes he sells is not very well compiled. Other than that the class is well worth taking. I would recommend the class. The films in class are also fun to watch, the "Im marrried to the Co." book stunk!
I found this class to be very interesting. As for Prof. Stanlaw, he's very nice and approachable but his lectures can be a little disorganized. He offers to sell you course notes at the beginning of the semester. THIS IS A MUST BUY. Exams are not too bad if you have them. Smart professor and fascinating class. What more could you ask for?
He made up a book of his class notes- definitely buy it. It is everything he says word for word. If you don't buy it, you will definitely have a hard time following his lecture. Only 4 tests, including the final and a few extra credit opportunities- take advantage. Take this gen ed; its a fairy easy course and you don't have to do much!
Fantastic teacher very funny. the book of notes is a must buy. if he says there will be a movie DO NOT ditch it!! its on the tests non comprehensive. he is interactive i am an Anthro major and it was so much fun alot of people asked me if they should switch over after. lol take as a gen ed soo worth it!
Stanlaw is a pretty funny guy, most of the time. I found his lectures to be hard to follow, cause he rambles a lot. But definitely buy his notes for $10. The test aren't too bad if you study. I think this class could be really interesting but he kinda made me not interested in it :(
Bottom line: he rambles on and is never on topic. Buy his notes and read the books and you should get an A. Buy his lecture notes! This is a must!
Awesome guy! He's got a good sense of humor and is very helpful to those who need it. His study sessions are helpful too. I rarely went to class, but attended study sessions and I'm getting an A. Overall, I liked him a lot!
Dr Stanlaw is absolutely brilliant. His course was what got me to major in anthropology. Granted, he is disorganized, but there are things besides being orderly that factor into being a good teacher. Dr Stanlaw has an awesome message that he wants to get across in 185, and if you just pay attention you can learn it. Well worth it too!
He is a terrible teacher and his class is extremely boring. He rambles in his lectures which made it hard to follow the material. I would avoid this class at all costs
THIS CLASS IS TERRIBLE. SERIOUSLY, AVOID IT IF POSSIBLE. Stanlaw is so unlcear during his lectures and just rambles on and no one is even following what he is saying. He doesn't respond to emails and doesn't seem to really care if you enjoy the class or not. His test questions are unclear and he tries to make jokes in them which is just confusing.
Listen Up. It's an easy A. Buy the notes the first day for like 10 bucks and two days before the test just go all out studying them. Lecture is not mandatory and honestly I think I would have gotten an A if i never went to class. His lectures are just rambling. He is highly disorganized and there are tons of typos in the lecture notes and tests. GL
nice guy, but terrible teacher. doesn't spark your interest at all in the subject, and i'm an anthro major. the one good things is he sells his notes for the class and if you read that before tests you should do fairly well.
People who say that this class is terrible obviously do not know what a good professor is when they have one. Stanlaw was not only funny, but also very helpful. He wants all of his students to succeed and that is why I got an 96 in his class. He goes off topic a lot, but I think that is what keeps his class interesting.
He rambles on and he has you watch lots of boring films but he's not that bad. I do not have his notebook and take notes and so far have gotten A's on all my test. His study review sessions are also helpful. He does get annoying because he goes of topic and tries to joke around but overall a nice guy who likes teaching
Super nice teacher, exams are very easy. Textbooks for the class are really cheap and we watch alot of movies. He loves to ramble but he's also really funny and easy to listen to
At first, I liked this teacher. Funny and helpful. Overtime though, when I would go to his office hours he just lectured me any time I had a question. He also doesnt allow much question/comments during class since his info is not all fact. He is very demeaning in his office, which is way different than in class. Not hard, just didn't like him.
Stanlaw is a great professor who cares about his students. He teaches Anthropology which is kind of boring but he tries his best to make his students learn and succeed.Go to his lectures, read and you will fine
He is a really terrible teacher. He just rambles during lecture and his test questions are very unclear! I studied for the last test and I think I mastered the material well, but I got a poor score because his questions were so ambiguous! I'm taking classes that are much harder than this one and I get better scores because the questions are clear.
Buy is notes book and read it and go over his study guide and you should be fine. Read his novels that he assigns. I barley went to class and am getting a C-B. Class is so boring he just rants on and on. But shows movies a lot.
Easy but VERY BORING. It is honestly close to impossible to pay attention in his class due to the fact that Stanlaw rambles a lot. Just go to class occasionally and buy his notes and read them before the test and you should do fine.
This class wasn't bad but I did not care for Stanlaw's teaching style at all. He rambles during class and even in the notes he gives as well. He needs to work on clarifying the material better. I would not recommend this class if you do not want an average teacher or grade.
His lectures are long and he tends to ramble a little. I understand that he is passionate about his topic and wishes us to understand why. He doesn't explain what we will be tested on and all the points come from the tests. He also dims the lights in the evening class i am in so its easy to fall asleep.
love him. funny guy
Dr. Stanlaw is one of the greatest teachers ever! If you're looking to learn about interesting cultures this is the class. Also, if you need to fulfill a Gen Ed requirement TAKE THIS CLASS! it's an easy A. I got a 101% in the class and as long as you buy the notebook and fill in study guides and attend his review sessions and you'll get that A!
You really don't have to go to class to get a good grade. But if you do attend the lectures you'll pass with an A no doubt.
Stanlaw is a funny guy and sometimes his lectures are interesting. Other times, they're pretty long and boring. But the class is pretty easy and he doesn't require a lot of expensive textbooks, which is nice. Stanlaw is a very interesting man.
I love Stanlaw. He's quirky and hilarious. Not to mention very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject. Only four tests, but they aren't that hard. We often connect our unit to popculture which is quite engaging. Lectures sometimes seem long but I think that's more because of when the class is, not Stanlaw's lectures.
Freaking love stanlaw. He's fascinating, funny, and a great teacher. I look forward to going to class with him.
I never bought the notebook (I'm too cheap). Everyone says he rambles but I pay attention in class about 75% of the time. I always show up to lectures and sit near the front on the right hand side. He may be rambling but if you are an English speaker he is very easy to understand I have a consistent A in this class... Come to class. Read the books
Stanlaw is very passionate about Anthropology. I was in an honors section of Ant185. He requires you to read a few short novels, but they aren't bad. His lectures are optional, but I enjoyed the commentaries. He sells note packets, which help with the exams. Overall pretty easy class and was interesting to me.
There's only four exams for this class and he does offer extra credit along with them. Definitely an interesting man, he's very passionate about anthropology. His lectures get boring sometimes but it's a pretty easy class to get through.
Stanlaw is a good professor. There is reading and you won't do well if you don't read it. The only grades are tests but the tests aren't too bad as long as you go to class (some questions you'd only get right if you went to lecture). If you do the readings and go to lecture you'll get an A.
Stanlaw is eccentric. His lectures are all over the place, but if you pay the $10 for his book of notes you can follow along pretty easily. His lectures are interesting and he wants people to have fun. The tests are easy to pass if you go to the study sessions. There are a few novels he has you read for fun and writing prompts for extra credit.
Stanlaw is an awesome professor. He gives you a study guide before the tests, and has a study review session the day before the test as well. He is a funny guy, who wants everyone to do well. His tests are pretty easy overall, with opportunity for extra credit before each one.
Great Gen-Ed class. Stanlaw sells a copy of his notes for the class which is really helpful. He's a super hilarious professor and makes lecture fun. Grade is built up of 3 tests and offers an extra credit paper after each test. Also holds study sessions the night before each test to go over material. Not too hard if you go and pay attention.
4 tests on movies you watch in class, lecture/notes, and books you read. He gives 3 point extra credit papers for each test. Also offered the past to semesters 10 extra points for the Cubs winning and will probably just give it for the next semester. Its a boring lecture but its an easy B if not an A.
The most boring GenEd ever. Every time I went to lecture I ended up leaving and asking myself why I did. There was a horse on the PP, he named it Fred in lecture, that was a ? on test. Didn't get the note packet. Got the books but didn't read them. Easy A, but SO BORING.
Stanlaw has a very peculiar sense of humor which he often displays in every class. His lectures can be dry and boring but are worth going to because he'll often give out answers to the test. He requires several books to be read and recommends buying his class guide notes (which I did and was worth it). The books are not needed to be read to pass.
Great guy! You can tell he loves anthropology and wants everyone to try to enjoy the subject as much as possible. Extra credit papers before each test, 4 exams, and that's it. Buy the note packet!! Very helpful! Also, make sure to go to all the review session! Makes the test a lot easier.
Easiest gen ed I've ever taken. You can buy a notebook with the entire lectures he teaches in it. Just go over the notes the night before the test and you'll be fine and do the extra credit papers he offers. His lectures are boring and you can miss all of them and still do good on the test. I definitely recommend if you're looking for an easy gened
Stanlaw is a great guy! You can tell he really likes what he does. His lectures are funny with jokes throughout the whole class. There's only four tests, and those make up your full grade, but he offers extra credit for each test and if the cubs win you get an extra 10 points. Great class if your looking for a straight forward gen ed
If you have to take ANT185, take it with Stanlaw! He offers extra credit for every test and lets you have the option to buy a booklet with all the semester notes in it. I never read the required books nor have I shown up to class much & I still have a decent grade just buy studying the booklet & taking advantage of the extra credit opportunities!
Jim (AKA Indiana Jones) is one of the best teachers at ISU. If you take this class, be mentally prepared to come to every class, even if you don't want to, do this if you want an A or B. A lot of the test questions are based on only things he says in class. This includes jokes too that he says! Read, watch the material given & you can get a 100%.
I loved Dr. Stanlaw. He is one of the best professors I have had in college. He is very funny and loves interacting with students. I would recommend him because of his clarity in teaching and because he really cares about his class.
The lectures are long/boring if you don't like the subject matter. However, the guy really loves what he does and tries his best. He always gives out a ton of extra-credit for no reason and brings his dogs, and snacks to the exam study sessions. The course is only grade by a few things but if you got above an 84% in the class he marked it as an A.
Solid class structure, monotonous voice so I ended us falling asleep more than once. Gives out a lot of extra credit and exams are a breeze. This is a good class to take if you require an AMALI class.
He always had stories to tell about his endeavors. Very interesting person!
Jim is an amazing guy, really funny dude and the class is interesting. He gave us the textbooks we need to read, so you don't have to buy anything. The tests are a bit everywhere and some of the questions are about the readings, so you will need to read. He gave us extra credit depending on if the Cubs won or not, so great guy, highly recommend
From your average guy who is here to get a degree, this guys class is difficult. He speaks very fast, and sometimes is hard to understand. In order to do well on his exams you have to really pay attention in class! Great guy, but tough professor.
Dr. Stanlaw is a really cool and understanding guy but he's also very chaotic, which makes his class a bit of a headache sometimes. His tests are also a little funky sometimes, they're made up of very specific phrases from what he says in class and the FOUR textbooks that he pulls readings out of. You don't have to buy any of them though.
Professor Stanlaw is the worst professor I have ever had. He goes through slides super fast and doesn’t give you a copy of them. All of his exams have questions that weren’t discussed in class. He rarely stays on topic and goes off on tangents all the time so you are never sure what is actually on the exam. Do not take this class trust me
Do NOT choose stanlaw if you have a type A personality. He provides NO structure. No homework which is nice but your entire grade is based on 4 tests. His lectures are interesting... sometimes, but he is so scatterbrained that it is impossible to work ahead or even keep up sometimes.
I love him so much, great professor. Lecture heavy and WATCH THE FILMS. The readings are also always on the test.
Best professor i've ever had. COME TO CLASS, his tests are solely about what he says in lectures and what's in the textbook/videos. He gives the textbooks online for free. His lectures were amazing, funny, and very interesting. Make sure to take notes and you'll easily pass. There's an optional extra credit assignment for each test. He's the best!
Great guy and tests are easy, they do include references that he makes in class quite a bit. no textbooks necessary
is he even mentions a reading, you better read it, and go to the study sessions and do the extra credit
Your grade in the class is based on 400 points, those being ONLY exams. No homework, so study the required text he gives out to read and watch every video he assigns as those will all be on your test. Pretty straightforward tests as far as the material you were given to study. You don't have to go to class
The entire class grade is four tests, and an extra credit assignment for each. The class itself isn't too bad, Stanlaw just yaps the whole time and if you take notes and study you should do great. There are textbook readings on the tests but he sends them to you, so no purchase necessary! Overall, this class was a little boring but not too hard.
stanlaw was a silly guy; you can definitely tell he is passionate about his subject! ant 185 was pretty chill. nothing besides readings for exams are on canvas so it's highly recommended to attend lecture LOL also your grade is purely based on 4 exams and nothing else. exams are easy if you do the readings, go to class, and attend study sessions!
Easiest class you will take. I never went to lecture because he rambled a LOT so I just did the readings and watched the content outside of class and got As on all four exams, which were the ONLY assignments. There is extra credit but I never needed to do it. All textbooks are on canvas. Honestly forgot I was taking this class most of the time
Stanlaw is an engaging professor who makes ANT185 pretty chill. Exams are easy if you attend lectures, do the readings, and use study tools like Unstuckstudy. Just stay off your phone and you'll do great in this class!
Best teacher ever made me want to switch my major.
Possibly one of the best professors you'll have during ur time at ISU.
This class was super easy and interesting AS LONG AS YOU GO TO LECTURE!!! He is a super funny guy and just wants you to enjoy anthropology as much as he does. The course is only graded by exams but as long as you pay attention in class and read the readings on Canvas you will be fine. Would definitely take a class with him again!
Had Stanlaw for 185, then for a couple more classes afterward. He is genuinely the worst professor I have ever had (I have two degrees), and he is the primary reason I ended up dropping out of ISU. 185 with him is doable, you'll probably be fine - but I pray you never have to take a more advanced course with him. He has a very disturbing dark side.
Stanlaw is a very nice teacher and can be funny at times, which makes the class more enjoyable. However, his lectures are sooo boring; he spends most of the class period reading from his slideshow. The course is structured around four tests, and he offers extra credit opportunities for each exam, which was nice.
