You will love this class, no final and only 3 tests with an easy paper.
tells jokes, class is fun, offbeat examples
He's great. He's funny, and makes it easy to understand. You'll like him
funny, don't buy the book, he'll go over everything
Very funny!
he's very funny. if you go to class you don't have to read the text at all.
JUST PLAIN AWESOME!!!
Jim is the man. The class you don't mind going to sick. It changed my life.

If every teacher was like Jim, we'd all be playin GTA3 & drink'n Guiness, Go Jim
Best prof on campus! Talks about eating peeps and sleeping with an X-men comforter all class...
Jim kicks ass. He's a great professor: whether you want a class to goof off in or whether you're looking to really learn some philosophy. He knows his stuff and is funny as hell.
Fun and easygoing teacher. You will laugh so hard that your sides will hurt. PLUS, the humor is unlike anything you have ever heard before!
Jim is like Chris Rock, VERY FUNNY AND INTERESTING. This class offered me a lot of things to understand in ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE OF philsophy
Very entertaining:)A class i didnt mind going to.
I found out why I was lucky to get into his class. He makes a boring class very interesting. Although he's a little abstract he might be the funniest guy I've ever met.
Fantastically funny
Jim is totally awesome... If you're looking for an AH GFR to take, this is it... Really easy, but I still loved going to class every day. I definitely did learn, but had fun doing it. He's great.
Great teacher. Crazy as a loon (but it is a good thing). Funny. Helpful. If you can get into one of his classes, take it.
Great teacher and HILLARIOUS. Probably, missed his true calling as a stand-up comic, but that works out for us. Tests can be a little difficult b/c you have to think, which I hate doing.
so funny! Had so much fun in the class, but learned a lot. would love to take another class with him. He made the topics interesting with his crazy stories and you didn't really have to spend much time studying for his exams if you went to class.
Best teacher I've ever had. Im thinking about changing my major because of him. He was funny and interesting, I never wanted to miss a class.
Great teacher. Makes class interesting but is still able to teach you. Found myself getting pissed when missing his class. Very funny and approachable. Tests and paper are laughable. Take any class you can with him. If he only taught bio courses.
Best teacher I have ever had at UMBC. Hillarious but brilliant! the material is interesting and the way he presents it makes it even better...def take this class!
Jim is a southern hick as he calls himself, that makes him cool. Take the class and enjoy!
Jim (dont call him Dr. or Mr. Thomas) was a very good teacher. You get study sheets right before the exam that contain everything thats gonna be on the exam. Very confrontable and a very nice guy. Only one paper, which is very easy as well. Go to class and you wont even have to read the book.
The best teacher i've had at my six years at UMBC
Hands down, Jim is one of the best professors I've ever had!!! He makes his class so much fun to go to. I don't think I ever left his class without laughing so much until my stomach hurt. DO try to take a class with him. Your UMBC experience is not complete until you take a Jim Thomas class!
Excellent teacher!! Nothing I could say hasn't been mentioned in the previous comments already. Relates the subject matter in a humourous yet engaging way; simply a gifted teacher.
You take a Jim Thomas class. Doesn't matter your major doesn't matter which class. If you can take it do so. He's great and you might even learn something.
Haha, great professor. He's really funny and a good teacher as well; you'll get plenty of good discussion in his class as well as relevant material. However, if you're truly interested in philosophy, you'll have to read the book without anyone telling you to, because he doesn't pressure at all.
Everyone should take this professor and this class. This class was the philosophy of humor. There was 2 5-page papers, a take home final, and 5 "pop" quizzes (that he told you about), adn were really easy (only contained 2 questions). His classes are really fun, we watched some kind of comedy (stand-up, dave chapelle, simpsons) every day.

One one the craziest prof I had...if you have a chance to take phil 100 with him DO IT! i thought he was on drugs when he first came into class but he ends up being one of the best teachers. I thik i learned and comprehended the most from him. The tests are fairly easy but that's because he makes it so much fun to learn!
Funny and easy going. He takes his time with handing back test
This guy's great, I was talking with a friend and we agreed that if Thomas were teaching Physics 431, we'd still find a way to take it him (no, we were not science majors of any type). He's just that good a professor personality-wise, he knows what he's talking about, too bad he only teaches the lower level phil courses
This guy is fantastic. Extremely personable, funny, and intelligent. Sometimes class is sort of discombobulated, but overall excellent.
He's crazey! His personal stories, if they came from another person, would make me very, very wary...but he's just so hot and funny and smart that you can't help but enjoy his class.
He's an awesome teacher...very amusing and very funny...he gets you through the dull philosophy information!
great teacher. grade based on 3 5 page papers and 5 homework assignments. he is really funny and makes class interesting. take any of his classes that are possible
Don't go to UMBC without taking one of his classes. He is becoming a celebrity on campus and you cannot register for his classes a day after registration opens up.
Great teacher
I love this man, if I were a girl, I'd marry him. The way he teaches is so engaging and awesome that you really don't even need a textbook. Explains stuff with awesome and HILARIOUS analogies to help you out. Gives review sheets of what's on the tests and doesn't stray from them. THE best Prof and a major video gamer. Simply T-H-E B-E-S-T.
Don't miss this class! Jim Thomas is famous! Each class is stand up comedy, but I learned a lot too. He cares about his students, and is always willing to help.
TAKE THIS CLASS, ITS FUN, EASY, AND WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST TIMES YOU HAVE IN COLLEGE, IF YOU DONT PASS THIS CLASS, THEN DROP OUT OF COLLEGE
the best prof in school ever. he's little crazy but he's cool.
Funny, Strange, yet Excellent teacher. This course is Creationism and Evolution and he made it easy to express your point of view without the fear of being attacked if your thoughts were contrary to his or anyone elses. He also told the class to be respectful of their classmates.
This man is God
Philosophy of moral theory is ****in awesome. Take it
Best philosophy class ever! I just wish it were full of more engaging students...
This guy is great, if you can fit his class in your schedule, take it. Great teacher, you will want to come to class, and I think this guy remembers everything. #1 Professor.

The BESt'est' professor i've ever had...go to his class regularly..(& trust me, u'll not get bored by ny chance..his jokes mak the class)..and pay attention, then u don even need to touch the textbook..gives out review sheets and the xam will be the same but reworded..he is AWESOME!!!
One of the most interesting professors I had in my 4 years at UMBC. Take him--you'll learn a lot (explains everything very well), laugh a lot and enjoy coming to class!
JIM ROCKS MY SOCKS!!! SO AMAZING!! ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I'VE HAD DURING MY COLLEGE CAREER!! THANKS FOR SETTING THE BAR FOR OTHER PROFESSORS!!
Funniest class I've ever had!
Funniest professor on campus.
i LOVE JIM THOMAS,is he married? haha
Jimo is da man!! Its funny how his classes are divide athletes on one side and the rest on the other. But overall his class is very easy. He had 3 tests and 1 paper each worth 25%. Its almost impossible to get a C in this class, exams are simple and he is very helpful if you need help!
folks i f u ever think to take a philosophy class in umbc. do not miss jim thomas.. he rocks..ver approachable and funny..just listen to what he says n read his notes u will get definite "A". trust me
He teaches college classes like they SHOULD be taught. Take him if you're not even a PHIL major
You can not go thru four years at umbc and then graduate without taking him. He's hilarious, fun, interesting. I thought philosophy was gonna be the most boring class of my life but Jim is awesome!!! Just go to class and listen, at the very least, you'll get a B. if you write a few things down and study for an hour before the exam, you'll get an A.
LOVED HIM!Going to class makes a lot more sense when it comes to the exams but his class is so interesting and the man is HILARIOUS that you want to go to class! TAKE HIM! I did't do much to get an A besides take decent notes and listen! He's awesome! He's also understanding and helful! SERIOUSLY TAKE HIS CLASSES!
it's been 8 years since i've had Jim Thomas in intro to philosophy and I still remember his lectures, which were more like stand up routines. He teaches his lectures well enough for you not to really have to read the book. He'll say hi to you if you see him around campus and buy him a case of guiness and you'll get an A.
this man is amazing. take this class. seriously.
Nothing more to say...great class
Amazing, both fun and educational, definitely one of the best teachers I've had
You are not paying for a class...You are going to a stand up comedy show. Dude is hilarious. If you get less than a B, drop out.
Wow, I signed up on here just tell you people to take Jim's class. He is the coolest, nicest dude ever. You can be yourself in class, pop a joke, call him out on BS(he wants you to). Best learning experience at UMBC. I would have loved college if more professors were like him. Most are dull and elites. He rules.
He is the greatest philosophy teacher I have had.
I took Evolution vs. Intelligent Design with Thomas. I am not a phil major but he is the best professor I ever had!!! Once I laughed so much during class I started to tear up! Seriously I loved going to his class everyday and I learned a lot too! If professors were more like him, college would have been worth it!
There was a point during the semester where I was having a really bad time and all I wanted to do was just go to his class. I'm not kidding you, he's that funny and awesome. I really learned a lot. You can tell he really does take the material seriously and is passionate about it. Don't bother getting the book, just go to class :-)
There are funny teachers who can't teach, and good teachers with no sense of humor. Jim is a great teacher and keeps the students laughing most of the class. Even if you don't care much for philosophy, take this class. It is interesting and worth going to.

Best professor ever! Just attend his class, he is hilarious, you wouldn't want to miss any of his classes. He is extremely helpful, interesting and really knows how to teach! A++++++++++! He is a cool dude!
The lectures were hilarious and very informative. He explains concepts very clearly. The man is a professional comedian. A UMBC treasure.
Best professor EVER! He is AWESOME. He is super funny and knows how to teach! Again, he is the best professor!!!!!!
Wow. He is a star!!!!
WOW! Best class I've taken since I started at UMBC!!! (I'm a junior) Love going to class. From the moment he walks in on the first day, he's got the class laughing. The only time he's ever been 100% serious was when he was tell the class that he is always willing to help. I'm definitely going to take another class with him!
AWESOME PROF
Had him for Philosophy of Humor, Moral Theory, and Intro to Philosophy. Jim is a fantastic teacher whose hilarious stories will make you want to come to class. Lectures are well-prepared. Easy grader; helpful if you need it. You MUST take at least one class with Jim in your lifetime! It will be a joy. One of my favorite teachers of all time.
Make sure you bring popcorn and soda to his lectures. This guy is an hour and 15 minutes of pure entertainment every single time.
The coolest guy ever. Jim is not only a great teacher, but truly an estimable role model.
a brilliant man and a sensible professor. very understanding and comprehensive. extremely lucid and thoughtful.
Great professor. Explains everything that needs to be on the exam. Hilarious! Attendance wasn't mandatory but I never missed a class!
Number one teacher. He should be teaching other Professor how to teach. I think nobody should leave UMBC without taking at least one class with him. His appearance on the first page of ratemyprofessor.com as the top ten professor should tell you guys that this guy got something. AWESOME***
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Hands down. Going to class is a pleasure; you learn a lot and have fun the whole time.
He is one of the best professors I've e ever had. Going to his class is like going to a comedy show, he get's the material across in a funny way, and in way that will not put you to sleep. He is very helpful and understanding.
Hands down best prof at UMBC. Took him my freshman year in 99 and still remember his hatred for hominy, love of guiness, blacking out at concerts and acid trip looking bowls of milk after finishing a bowl of fruity pebbles. All of his stories help you vividly remember philosophy and always kind and wanting to help.
Awesome guy, and an awesome class. The way classes should be. Exams are simple, no stress, and maximum learning. I'm convinced the guy is a comedian and uses the class to test his material. You really don't have to go to class, but its the highlight of my week when the rest of my classes are CHEM. Must take before you graduate.
awesome teacher, hilarious. its not mandatory to come but the classes are so much fun it makes you attend everyday!
MUST HAVE TEACHER!!!! You should totally take this class before you graduate!!!!
sweet
This teacher is one of the most craziest, funniest, and random teachers i have ever had. He'll argue against anything you say, and he will win. but he makes it work. Very clear, helps you understand even the most abstract ideas of philosophy. Essay and short answers for tests, but if you go to class you will pass. and you actually do learn a lot
hands down, greatest teacher/prof...
Amazing instructor, the best I've had yet at UMBC. You don't really need to read the book because he covers everything in his lecture, which while sometimes off-topic are always interesting and usually hilarious. Very approachable. A+
Best professor I've ever had, hilarious and will remember you forever. Don't buy the textbook--not worth it. He's just amazing. If he taught all my classes, college would be a breeze and I'd be set for life. We need more professors like Jim here.
Amazing teacher. Every class was like going to a stand-up comedy show. Laughed so hard it hurt. Tests are easy if you come to class. Makes phil easy to understand, and everything is memorable. Don't buy textbook, everything you need to know is stated in class.
This guy is awesome, you have to take at least one class with him at UMBC. Easy on the eyes too :)
Best and most hilarious professor I've ever had. Has a very natural humor and wit and even though most of the class is spent joking around, he manages to tie all of it back to the subject, which makes the material that much more interesting and easy to understand.
One of the best professors at UMBC. His style of teaching is utterly honest and humorous. He is one of the few professors that actually makes you THINK. Take this course.
Best professor ever. No matter how bad is the day he lightens up the day with all the real funny jokes which are related to the subject. Highly recommended:)
When I read the reviews I had to see for myself if this teacher was as good as everyone said. He was! He can engage his students for the entire class. The class seems like it is 15 minutes instead of 75. Jim Thomas is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Best class ever. I actually felt like I was missing out not going to class. You'll learn a lot. Go to class, and you'll get an A. This is one class you won't mind going to.
really phenomenal professor. I can hardly believe the amount that I learned without even intending to. Redefines teacher. Honestly, I didn't even take the class for credit, just for a break from my other courses
Prof Thomas is the BEST! Seriously, before graduating, you MUST take his class! UMBC should ask him to do a Teaching 101 for all Professors on campus to incorporate some of his style in their teaching. I looked forward to this class, each & every time! So fun & you learn a lot! Enroll in it!
Jim redefines what it means to be a "teacher" at a "university." An outsider might see him as lazy. In reality, he's nonchalant but über caring about his student's success and, more importantly, understanding of the material. He cuts through a lot of BS and presents material in a funny, highly-memorable way. (Note: I also took his 100 level class)
very good teacher
Professor Thomas is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Thank god I took his class in my senior year as I would have probably changed my major to Philosophy had I taken his class early on. Every class is like a stand-up comedy routine. He keeps the entire class engaged while at the same time posing interesting questions. Thanks Jim.
Phenomenal instructor, best in the philosophy department. Hands down. Every day is a standup comedy routine. This is the third class I've taken with him and a fourth one is coming up in the spring. He cuts down on the dry material and presents it in a fun and memorable way. He cares about his students success. It's a shame that he isn't tenured.
He's an amazing teacher. Not only is he hilarious, but you'll actually WANT to learn from Jim. He doesn't care if you come to class, but every seat is usually filled because it's an entertaining, thought-provoking class. I'm a biology major, but this class is by far the best class ever. Definitely recommend it!
He's ridiculously funny, but he panders to the lowest common denominator. He knows this, but does not seem to care. Take him if you want easy credits, but do not expect to learn much if you're serious about philosophy. I took a 300-level class with him and didn't learn anything that wouldn't be covered in a decent intro class.
Thomas is HILARIOUS. Every class is like a stand up comedy routine, the professor is very approachable, and the assignments given are relatively easy. A little too easy, and therein lies my only complaint. Thomas is an amazing teacher, but he doesn't goes as in depth into the material as I would have liked, nor is there much class discussion.
Jim is hilarious and easiest class I've ever taken. His exams are extremely easy as long as you look over the study guide he pass out. Exam reflects 99.9% of what the study guide shows. Just listen in class & get notes and you can get solid A without any issue. Not much effort necessary for this class and MUST take class before graduating from UMBC
GREATEST Professor I've ever had in my life. No joke. This guy is hilarious and makes everything fun and interesting. Take him before you graduate!
Jim Thomas is the best professor ive ever had hands down. He makes class very entertaining and you would not think he would be a college professor. He is HILARIOUS and teaches very well while making you so interested in the topic. Exams are very easy, and class is very easy. You won't even want to skip his class, it is too fun!
Jim is a fabulous Professor! Don't leave UMBC until you've taken his class. Hands down, best professor. UMBC should hire him to teach some of the not so good Professors. They could learn a lot from his style/methods. Must take any of his classes!
The most interesting and entertaining class i have ever take. I attend a different school now but i will always remember what a great experience i had in jims' class. He made the material so understandable and interesting and i have never found anything to compete. The best professor i have ever had
Best class i ever took. Most fun i ever had getting up so early! I am so glad im not the only one that thinks hes good lookin idk what it is but theres something about him!
The first impression I had was Jim Thomas looks very unusual, but through out the semester he proves to be entertaining and humorous, both qualities which made the class not only interesting but made the material comprehensible to many students including myself. I strongly recommend students to take his class before they take any other.
You have to take this class before you graduate! He is the best professor at UMBC! He portrays the philosophy topics in a way that students can relate and understand. I never missed a class. Each lecture was pretty much a stand up comedy performance! Exams are in essay form, and there is one 3-5 paper. Easy A.
Best prof i have ever had. i took this class over 4 years ago and i still remember his name. he is seriously an amazing professor and you havent experienced the best UMBC has to offer until you take his class!
Great Professor! Others should take notes. Awesome class discussions.
WOW! Professor Thomas is a great Professor! He keeps the class entertained through his humorous nature and is VERY knowledgeable. I spoke to him after class numerous times and it were as if I was talking to my best friend. Relates to real-life examples and his readings that he assigns are actually genuinely interesting! TAKE HIS EVERY CLASS!
Professor Thomas has been by far my favorite teacher this semester. Great guy. He doesn't allow laptops in class, but with the way he does the job, you REALLY wanna pay attention.
people! jim is a beast! mellow accent + hilarious stories that relate to what we're learning = best professor ever! but beware, he's not as easy as people say! i got a B- on my first exam (short answer/essay format) when i expected an A... actually pay attention in class! you might as well anyway: every class is like watching a comedian teach us :D
Amazing teacher, hilarious in class. Will keep you interested in the material, and it will be your favorite class of all time. You will want to go to every lecture and actually look forward to taking the tests and writing the paper. His skills are crazy.
This is the BEST Professor I have EVER taken. If you do not find is class interesting, I will personally give you your money back. The material is pretty straight forward. The exams make you think: not difficult, but not something you should take lightly. (I took the first exam lightly and ended up with a B in the class because of it.) TAKE IT!
Best professor at UMBC. You are not a true UMBC student until you have taken one of his classes.
JUST TAKE THIS CLASS.YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD.
GREATEST PROFESSOR EVER!
BEST PROFESSOR EASY MUST TAKE BEFORE YOU GRADUATE
Has to be the best professor I have ever had. He makes every class worth your time and makes it enjoyable. If he taught all my classes, college would be so much more enjoyable. He has been the only teacher who makes me want to come to class. He makes the material relatable to anyone and anything. Take any of his classes if you can.
Hilarious...Simply the best part of my classes all week. I plan to do a minor in philosophy (after having his class) and take as many class as possible with him.
Thomas rules. I'm currently taking his Philosophy of Law class and it is the highlight of my school week. He does not require attendance but I go to class anyway, despite his being my last class of the day! Highly highly recommended!
Amazing.
Best professor, no contest. Took his 100 level class and loved it so much i decided to take 373. The material is more serious and pretty confusing. He is still funny as hell but certain days will be more dry simply because the material requires it. Phil 100 was straight forward and easy. This will require a little more work, though it is worth it.
One of the best professor at UMBC, got me interested in the subject that i absolutely hated. He has an amazing sense of humor and keeps his lectures extraordinarily interesting. All you have to do to be successful is to show up in class, pay attention, participate, take notes, and study the notes for exams, and work on a project which was easy.
Seriously the best and funniest teacher out there. No lie. I took PHIL 100 during the Winter session. The way he teaches by making use of a lot of humor but you still understand everything. He seriously made it fun to learn. I guarantee that if you talk his class you will never stop laughing and you will leave with a wealth of knowledge
JIM THOMAS=AMAZING. He is super funny and you will enjoy every moment of his class. We have random students show up to his lectures because he is such a great professor. I have no idea why he isn't top rated overall on this website! Take his class!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! He somehow gets everyone to learn the material while incorporating stories that really don't have anything to do with the class but are highly entertaining. He is hilarious and is very smart. He remembers all of the material he wants to teach and does not need a book at hand. It is really spectacular.
The class is always worth waking up for, even when I only get a few hours of sleep.
Everything everyone says about Jim Thomas is true. Not only is it impossible to dislike this man, but the way he teaches provokes a lot of thought whether or not you are interested in the material. I learned way more than I expected to. This class is worth taking even if you don't need it.
This is my favorite class. I loved each and every moment in this class! He is so funny, kind, and thought-provoking. To simply put it: the best three hours of my week! I have never laughed and learned so much at the same time. I am so glad I had the opportunity to be in this class! I hope that everyone at UMBC gets a chance to take this class.
Probably the best teacher I've ever had. He's funny, interesting, thought provoking, and an absolute genius. If I could have him teach all my classes i would. Absolutely take him if you can even if you don't have to.
No one should graduate UMBC without taking at least one course from Jim. Every single comment here is true: he's smart, helpful, and most of all funny, with a self-deprecating sense of humor. His stories and tangents are hilarious, but somehow end up being related to the material. Best professor I've ever had. You WILL look forward to his class!
The lectures are hilarious if you have any sort of humour. There is no textbooks or books required to read, although if you want to understand what is on the in class papers (the only thing graded in the class) you have to show up.
Amazing professor. He is hilarious and will make you look forward to going to class. Must take before you graduate.
one of the best I have so far. Easy class with lone final essay.
If you go to UMBC, you have to take a class with Jim Thomas. I only took this class as an AH credit, I had no interest in Philosophy, but he really made the topic fun and interesting. The material isn't boring or dry at all and he tells many stories to go along with it. Exams are written so you have to study. But not hard. DEFINITELY TAKE!
Taking PHIl100 with Jim was the best decision I made at UMBC. He makes gloomy days turn into brighter days with his lectures. I did not read any of the outside material however I attended every class. If you show up to class and participate I don't see why you couldn't get an A or a B.
His hilariousness is only matched by his respect for dedicated students. Beyond his exceptional ability to teach, he really cares for students who love the course material and strive to learn more. Show up to class and participate, and you won't even care about the grade. His presence truly is a present to us all!
Jim Thomas is the best professor that UMBC has. He easily takes dense material like Epistemological theories and breaks it down to where the entire class understands it. I am purposely taking a class of his every semester so I can have at least one class that brings me joy. More professors need to be like him.
Absolutely my favorite professor at UMBC. You will have a hard time controlling your laughter some days, his stories are insanely funny. There's 3 exams and a paper. If you show up and actively listen (which isn't hard) you should get at least a B. Take a class with him even if you don't need to because it just brightens your day. Dude is the best.
He is hilarious while still being extremely informative. He knows his stuff and really makes you think about the big philosophical questions.
Best professor at UMBC. His lectures are basically stand up comedy, and his philosophy of humor class is hilarious. Have taken two classes with him and taking a third before I graduate because he is great.
I love this professor! Going to class is like going to a comedy show, absolutely brightens your day. You will actually learn the material through his lectures, he has endless examples to really make you think about philosophy. Go to class and take notes and you will get at least a B. AWESOME PROFESSOR!
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. PLEASE TAKE HIM. WOULD RECOMMEND. He explains everything in a way where you don't think you're learning and every piece of information sticks with you. He makes you laugh and keeps you awake. Attendance is not mandatory, but he makes you want to come to class.
He is my favorite professor by far! Definitely take this class with him! The lectures are entertaining and he explains everything in detail and very clear! By far one of my favorite classes! He gives wonderful feedback on exams and the one essay at the end of the semester! He is very willing to help his students and answer any questions.
He's a really great guy and a great teacher. Sometimes he can get a little too silly and derpy and takes a few minutes to get back on topic, but he's really very good at what he does and you can tell.
Professor Thomas is so funny and entertaining. His lectures were never boring and he always had a story to tell. Additionally, he does a great job of explaining the subject of Philosophy.
Here's a great professor. His lectures really make you want to engage in his class. He gives study guides which are basically his exams(essay format). There's a final paper and he gives time and feedback. Easy A if you enjoy the subject.
First class with him today. Non-stop jokes, had the whole class LAUGHING hard. Too early to discuss the course, but according to friends that had him, great discussions and lectures. If you follow the material and come to class (optional), you will do fine.
easily the best prof i've ever had. took a pretty boring subject and made it amazing! i would take any class if he was teaching it
Professor Thomas is fantastic. If you show up to class he is both funny and gives you all the information you need to do well on your exam.
Took PHIL399 - Philosophy of Humor. Do anything you can to take this class, it was by far the most enjoyable class I've ever taken. Thomas is literally hilarious (he could easily do stand up) so you'll actually WANT to go to class. The exams and papers are easy if you have well-informed opinions on things. He also seems to care about students.
10/10 would hear his rants again, only class I would wake up at 8:00 to take
Jim Thomas is a energetic and very fun teacher. His lectures really improved my mornings and i strongly suggest this professor.
He is an absolutely amazing teacher and his lectures always made my day since they were so good! 10/10 would recommend again!
Not only was Jim Thomas engaging and hysterical, quirky and in-touch, he also taught me things in such a relatable way, that I've managed to retain and apply his lessons 10 years later. As a Biochemistry major, I was interested in philosophy but didn't need it, but it quickly became my favorite class and I wish I had taken more classes with him.
The best professor at UMBC w/o a doubt. Loved coming to class just for his lectures.
Jim is an absolute gem and one of the most down to earth professors you will ever meet. The discussions he has in lecture pretty much give you everything you need to know for the exams, plus they are very entertaining. I plan to take him again in the future for my Upper-Level Elective requirement!
Try to take atleast one class with him. His teaching is unique and funny. Even as a person, he's a little odd but he's one of the best profs I had. Tests are based on the things he talks about so write that down. He's an easy grader, if you can prove you know what you're talking about and why. Easy A class with a great experience!
One of the best professors I've had at UMBC! Knew nothing about philosophy before this class & now I feel like I've learned so much. Loved coming to class not only because his lectures are great and funny, but because it makes studying for the exams much easier. Come to class and take good notes, and you'll never have to read the texts he provides.
Jim is the most amazing professor I've ever taken at UMBC, he is so funny and his lecture are so interesting. I never minded waking up at 8 am just to attend his lecture because I just sit there and listen and it is like attending a stand-up while also learning tons. You never have to read anything just show up take notes it and you will get an A!
As long as you go to UMBC, you absolutely need to take at least Phil100 with Jim because it will be the best course you ever take. He puts up notes on the board, which will be on the exam but he also gives a review sheet before which is exactly the same as the exam. HIS STORIES are SO FUNNY and you will literally want to go to class just to laugh.
He spends a lot of the class telling jokes, and it is sometimes hard to wake up early just to hear him ramble on about random things. It feels like his classes are about 25% philosophy content and 75% jokes about random things. He isn't hard, but he expects you to be able to explain yourself very well. Your whole grade is based off a few papers
The best professor I ever had at UMBC. There's a reason he has so many good reviews. You MUST take PHIL100 if you get the chance! Hilarious, caring, engaging... the list goes on and on.
Fantastic professor! Explains things in a very funny manner and is such a great guy to hear talk. Despite the classes being online, Professor Thomas handled it like a champ and made even online classes just a pleasure to participate in! I'm taking him again for Phil 152 this winter.
honestly, he is ok. i would not say he's the best prof i had so far. He kind of grades the exam harshly. I really hope to get an A at the end. I did not really like this class maybe it was the subject i hated idk. online class was fine since it was not met at a time, but lectures would sometimes get too long
Anyone who's taken his class before knows, that he is both funny and insightful. I took his class for PHIL100 and guess what? I came back for more. Just because. Easily one of the best profs at the school. 10/10 Would take again, so I did
Oh my lord, I was literally paying tuition for a standup comedy 3x a week for a semester. This class was the greatest class i ever took, it was so funny and easy. No homework, quizzes were redo-able extremely easy (like meme answers) exams could be answered straight from the lecture, notes needed. A lot of points are him asking for your opinion.
My favorite professor and human pls treat him well! Go to all lectures, take detailed notes, and participle bc in lecture he gives you everything to rock the exams. He taught me so much about myself and life, and shared and listened to all views, while never stating his own. He is a role model as a professor and articulates his lessons effortlessly
The best professor at umbc as long as you study for the exams your good he makes the lectures enjoyable
Best class I've ever taken. Jim is absolutely hilarious, and at the time teaches the material so well. Skips all the BS, tells you everything you need to know. There are readings, but if you just go to the lectures, you don't ever have to touch the blackboard materials. All you have to do to succeed is take detailed notes and study for exams.
Absolutely hilarious professor, comes very prepared to each lecture. Just come to each lecture and even if you're only paying half attention, you'll be fine. Actually makes you want to come to class
I have long said that you have to take a class with Jim Thomas at some point if you want the full UMBC experience. This professor is by leaps and bounds the best professor I have ever had, and inspired me to pursue further classes in philosophy. There are very few assignments to be graded on, but those few assignments are generally pretty easy.
Prof. Thomas is an absolute gem - his lectures are equal parts hilarious and insightful. Just show up, take notes, and you'll ace the exams. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep too!
one of my favorite professors at umbc. he's really funny and each class feels like a stand up comedy show. he skips any unnecessary information and dives right into what you need to know. if you attend lectures and take notes then you're guaranteed to pass the class with an A without doing any of the readings he provides.
Amazing professor with extremely funny and insightful lectures. Covered all the material needed to pass the class during lectures in a way that actually makes you want to show up. No hw, quizzes are easy, and he pulls exam questions straight from the review guides. Says some wild, out of pocket things but never in a hateful or insulting way.
Amazing Teacher.
