Not a bad class I got an A dont know how much I learned though
Monotone at times. Plenty of real-life examples, but very little connection to the daily tasks of the average student. Incredibly easy, but be careful -- he doesn't like Chemists or Biologists -- do not take if you are in a hard science major!
Very easy. The textbook is written for fourth graders, rather patronizing. Monotone, can be boring. His real life examples are interesting. Occasionally does wierd stuff that will wake you up.
Overall asy class. THe quizzes are stright on, and the tests are strongly covered. Make sure to cover all foggy areas because each test has a sufficient area covered for each topic
He is a very nice and helpful guy, easy straight forward in what he wants and expects, knows his stuff, and will go the extra mile to help you out, and test and quizess are straight forward as well
EXTREMELY EASY, QUIZES ARE ON WEB CT, AND TESTS ARE CAKE, LECTURES CAN BE INTERESTING OR EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE, VERY NICE GUY
Very very very easy. Study the outlines of each chapter that he gives you and you will easily get an A. He gives out extra credit questions which he gives the answers to right before you take. Nice guy, has different way of looking at things.
Easiest class ever. He gives you the study guides and quizzes that make up the test exactly. Tests are easy....you dont even need to go every day. I skipped all the time and still got an A. Barely even studied too. He is that easy. HE is super nice too :)
Crazy Treesey is the coolest, very laid back and easy. Gives you the answers to test, quizes, bonus points, ect... right before yu take them. You learn with no effort at all!
I have had him for 2 courses, and he is also my advisor. He is a wonderful person, and will always be there to help his students. His tests are geared toward learning, not tricking students! I reccomend him first for Psyc!!
Teaches interesting subject, and is interesting to listen to. Not too bad to sit through class. One problem, needs to SPEAK UP! i can hardly hear half the things he says.
very good instructor
He needs to speak louder. But other wise he is interesting! he gives dumb people a second chance which I personally think is not fair. But I guess someone has to cater to the dumbies and drug attics
Not a good teacher. You can't hear him and the class is just really boring. He also doesn't say when exams or quizzes are so you pretty much have to look on webct everyday.
Great teacher. Is very eager to help with any questions. Quizzes and Tests are straight foward and he often throws in some free questions. Has a good sense of humor and tries to make the subject as interesting as possible.
Very easy course. However, a real pain to sit though. Teacher is monotone. Very very boring. I was not too happy to learn about psychology of "teaching" from this teacher.
The class is easy. The professor is an idiot. He spends half the lecture talking about what makes him a good teacher, even though he's not a good teacher, he doesn't answer questions directly, and he uses golf examples WAAAAAAAAY too much. Easy A though.
Good guy, very fair. I enjoyed taking his class and I learned alot.
MONOTONE voice put me to sleep but i barely did any thing and passed
Very cute man, has a fun sense of humor. Tells stories relating to the subjects which helps to make class a little less dull. Classes do seem to take forever, however, but definitely an easy A if you put a tiny amount of effort into it.
This was just about the easiest class I have ever taken. He gives you all of the quiz questions ahead of time. Just go to class and listen, and you'll get an A. A 92% is an A in his class!
He talks way to quiet! Not very clear about whats on tests. you have to read the chapters that are 25 pages long and most isn't even on the test. uses examples instead of def on the tests can be confusing
He is a very easy teacher. I would definately recommend taking this course. YOu will get a good grade as long as you pay attention. He also has a good sense of humor. For once I didn't fall asleep in a class.
If you study the notes, you can pass every test. Also, he has quizes that are SO easy. You don't learn much practical information. The material is kind of hard, but just memorize notes and you will do fine on the tests. The material is not relevent to your life or career for the most part. Semi-hard
He is a little out there, but he seems to be a very nice man. His exams are out there and you have to study every little thing to be able to pass. At least the quizzes are easy!
All the info you need is in the notes you print off webct. Save yourself some money and don't buy the book, you will never use it. I barely study and I'm getting a B. Also his quizes are on webct, just memorize the answers.
Great Teacher! Made this class interesting and fun. One project that you do throughout the semester, but it is pretty easy. Go to class and read and you will have an easy A!
Makes me want to switch majors. It's obvious that he is brilliant, makes class very humorous too. His facts clash at times, but I still highly recommend his class. I'm very lazy and don't do alot of work, but I've got a B+ in his class.
At first I liked the class - easy A and all. Gives you the answers to quizzes and exams. Print off the lecture notes. The man cannot be heard which is good because he makes insensitive jokes about homosexuals and marriage issues.
This class is a breeze. The tests are super easy and you dont even gotta get a book. easy A
Loved the class, he made it fun with his stories. it did seem to last forever, but i got through it. Pretty easy, if you just try and do a little work everything is OK. there's only one big assignment, and that wasn't bad at all
Great teacher. No complaints. If you need this class take his and enjoy.
So freakin' easy! He give all lecture notes, and quizzes in advance. You dont need the book, or to really show up except on test/quiz days. If you want something easy I would totally take this class!
He rocked. His class was easy, didn't read the book, managed an A in his class. he really knows what he's talking about, and his examples really enhance the learning environment. He's a great guy, although can be boring time to time. I would definately suggest him to anyone.
He's awesome. Quizzes can be found online. Always chance to earn bonus points per test. Lectures are interesting. I didn't see some test questions on the last test and he's letting me come in to do those questions even the test was taken a week ago. Don't need book, but it helps.
this class isn't an easy A, his test are hard, but his quizes are easy. There is really no point in going to lecture, it's boring. Take him if u love to study and memorize things. No need to waste your money and buy the book either, never opened it once!
Lecture is a complete snooze-fest. Doesn't take attendance. Posts quizzes in advance on WebCT for an easy 100 points. Tests are long and slightly difficult. Don't bother buying the book; the exact notes he lectures from he posts on WebCT. Take him if you can!
Oh man, so easy. All I did was attend lecture about 50% of the time, and cram an hour before every quiz/test and I walked out of that lecture hall with an A-. Some lectures/activities were of interest to me. Great man.
Funny guy! He tries to get everyone's attention during lecture. (sometimes it doesn't work, but if you DO pay attention, it's interesting)One interview project (+ paper), one research paper, points for class excercises...what else can I say? He's really a gret teacher and very smart!
probable one of the best psyc teacher... i took it the first time with some horrible professor that just read off the powerpoint and failed... but this dude clearifys everything...makes more sense..
Has a weird obsession with killing babies... but he is pretty easy.
He puts his notes and the quizes on webct to make it easier on you and tells alot of storys then gets off track easily
Cool guy! He's got some really interesting stories... Just make sure you sit up front, because he talks really softly. Quizzes are all online, and tests are pretty much from the reading and notes in class... Just take additional notes in lecture, and you'll be fine. I never studied over an hour for a chapter and ended up with an A in the class.
keeps you interested in lecture
Class is dumb, and hard to stay awake in because the lights are so low, most of my friends said he was a cool guy, but I didn't like him very much
I had him a year ago and I learned a lot, although his lectures put me to sleep! All his notes are on the net for you to print out, as are all the quizzes beforehand and practice tests and such. It makes life so much easier! Oh yeah, and he has this crazy beard thing going on...or did.
He is very rude, and he looks like a santa claus version of mini me. He is one of the worst people to go ask help from so you might as well ask another student before you go to him for help.
Some material was hard to follow on PP, but he had it all on WebCT so you could go back and even print it off. Quizzes, tests and papers were pretty easy if you looked over material, and he always had interesting stories or jokes!
how ironic that he teaches psychology of teaching when this guy is the worst teacher i have ever had. Very rude, extremely un-helpful, interview project is difficult, and test are impossible! I would highly advise you to take him.
This is the hardest most boring teacher i have yet to have!! switch out!! the MOST STRICT GRADER IM YET TO HAVE!! AND HES VERY VERY OPINIONATED!
I love this prof. from day one he lays out what he expects and how to get an "A". All of his notes and quizes are online for you. his lectures are hilarious. I wish we taught the other PYSC classes i have to take.
I thought this would be an interesting class. He seems to be obsessed with****, he can relate it to every topic. All he talks about is himself, and then tests you over it. "According to Dr. VanTreese..." And then there's his mantra, People are bad, people lie. Is he included in that? Not an interesting class at all.
tough class and boring lecture..tells jokes all hour but relates all the subject to examples he gives..his powerpoints will become your life because thats all you really use to study for exams..get below a 50% on an exam and you have to retake it..but you can only retake 1 exam so dont bomb more than once or else you fail haha
Easy teacher. Everything you needed to know was in lecture. He doesn't make you attend, but it is a good idea. If you listen to what he says you will be golden.
Taught Psyc 150 as if it were a 400 level psychology class, he thinks that he knows everything and the stories he tells about past patients/experiences make his lectures hard to follow. Thinks his opinions are always right half of the exam questions start with "According to Dr. Vantreese...." so PAY ATTENTION IN LECTURE!!
The first class he said "you can ask me questions but if it's a dumb question im going to tell you it's a dumb question." ALWAYS ALWAYS refers to himself, one of his test questions said According to the book (then had the question) then said does Dr.Van Treese agree? He gives you NO STUDY guides and gives tests over like 3 ch. he makes it hard!
A good guy but he does refer to himself a lot and throws in his own opinion. Attending class was not mandatory but it was interesting and i actually wanted to go. He also gave random quizzes and assigments in class.
He is extremely boring, rude, talks about dead babies 24/7 and $#@* way too much. Don't bother asking for help, he won't. Tests are impossible. Talks extremely quiet, stands in front of lecture slides so you can't see them, slides have 85 slides per slide show, he is unhelpful, his tests are impossible to pass and have 90+ questions on them!BadProf
Great Prof, knowledgable and very interesting. He often makes crude jokes but I think it gives the class a bit of an edge, I personally like his stories. Tests are easy, but you need to actively listen in class to do well.
Dr. Van Treese really enjoys what he does. His lectures are interesting, and he's always cracking jokes. He gives you study questions and posts the quizzes online ahead of time so you know exactly how to prepare.
Knows his subject well. Listen and write down when he says "according to Dr. Van Treese" in lecture it will be on the test! Very passionate about subject but cares less aobut students. won't know your name
Short friendly German fellow. Knows his topics well, but be prepared for slide shows everyday. Tells you what is on the exams and doesn't give out hardly any homework other than projects.
Takes a while to warm up to the guy. At first his jokes are very offensive and in bad taste but you have to roll with them. Easy class if you read the book a little and take notes.
By far one of my favorite teachers, he's extremely helpful and encourages you to think outside of the box. His jokes are horribly inappropriate but extremely hilarious if you have a good sense of humor. No homework, just tests. Book isn't necessary, but it definitely helps out for tests and quizzes.
Often distracted and unclear. His lecture notes (~12 slides with little information) take several weeks to trudge through, since he only talks about himself. Misses class for Forensic-related things frequently. Changes what he wants for answers, even when read verbatim what he gave you. Would not recommend.
Study, pay attention to lecture, and do remember his "according to Dr. Van Treese" notes and you will do fine. Fine as a teacher, as a person...well different. Very insensitive and offensive. All jokes are borderline inappropriate, but people still laugh that's why he says them.
No an easy Course! Has a lot of moments when he is off topic, yet pay attention!!! A lot of test on According to Van Treese... learn to get the most out of the lecture, trust me! follow the SQ3R study method he recommends! extra credits are easy to get if you participate in certain studies at FSU! Hard professor yet i learned a lot!
He is such a great psychology professor. He has a lot of personal experiences and stories to tell to relate to the lecture. You can tell that he is good at what he does and he does his best to help you understand the material. Very nice guy and is always cracking jokes. I always look forward to his class and would recommend him!
Never got bored of his lectures, he's a hilarious! My favorite class this semester. He has a lot of personal stories that are interesting. But, he's not the best teacher. Tests were tough. He always gave the exact quizzes online to study from which helped. Tough grader. Gonna miss the class though!
He's a great professor. Exams are easy as long as you pay attention to the lecture. He prints notes for you, all quizzes are posted online prior to the quiz date ("study guide" is actual quiz). All in class assignments are super easy. He does have a different sense of humor but I thought he was pretty funny. He definitely doesn't want you to fail.
He's ok, He sense of humor is weird tho. His lectures are so long and he makes them seem boring. some stuff is interesting. He does print out all the lecture notes tho. His quizzes are ok, but you can easily forget to study for them. He has worksheets that he makes you do and they are the quiz ones. tests can be confusing, really have to study
I really like this professor. He is very opinionated and tries to be funny. Compares to life situations and does a really good job of preparing your for tests and quizzes with practically the exact material that will be on there. Talks a bit too quiet but overall I enjoyed his class and the subject itself, I would choose this prof again.
He is a hilarious professor. His jokes are definitely on the inappropriate and slightly offensive side, but I definitely enjoyed it. His quizzes are straight forward and posted online, but his tests tend to be a bit tough so take notes during lecture and go over the powerpoints he hands out. Easy A in my opinion.
Likes definitions word for word for tests.
Dr. Van Treese is awesome. He's very helpful and approachable outside of class. He tells it like it is and is usually funny too.
Patient and understanding when I needed deadline extensions. No attendence policy; I mainly needed to study and show up for tests/due dates. However, had crude sense of humor and joked that he "needed to go back to sensitivity training." Made big show of saying "retarded" to be deliberately controversial/offensive. Being autistic, I wasn't amused.
Dr. Van Treese is an amazing professor. He's very lecture heavy and only tends to grade on a few things so be sure to study for the exams. He uses his personal experience to guide his lectures rather than tell you things out of the textbook.
pretty much don't have to show up beside test dates all lecture is on blackboard
Attendance isn't mandatory. His lectures are kind of all over the place and boring. He has a really weird sense of humor and can be a little over the top in a bad way. His jokes can be offensive at times. There's no homework. The tests are multiple choice, but his short answers are where it counts. He's very particular on how you answer them.
Do not take him if you can avoid, he sits on one slide during lecture for about 20 minutes and tells stories that dont relate and says the answer in the last minute of talking. Very confusing and a hard grader. I will give you negative points on your short answer if you waste my time, so if you dont know it dont answer - Jim Van Treese
Probably my favorite professor so far. The class might be a little rough if you're not on the same page when it comes to his humor, but I've learned so much in every class he's taught. His stories might be long sometimes but the real world may be the best example when it comes to subjects that are difficult. Ask questions.
He lets you get half of the points you missed on short answer parts of the tests if you go see him afterward. He also gives all answers to the tests beforehand. He expects you to read the textbook and doesn't really lecture on it. The group project is easy. He lets you play around with some psych tests that give you good experience for grad school.
I have had Dr. Van Treese several times, the difficulty of the content depends on which class you take. He had a stroke not long ago, since then the quality of his teaching has dropped drastically. He rambles for an entire class period on things unrelated to the course content. Don't take him with higher level courses if you can avoid it.
Lectures consist of 15 minutes of real information and one hour of unrelated stories and cringe/edgy jokes. Class is not worth the money, I had to teach myself most of the material. Thankfully the textbook is very helpful. Study guides for exams are not helpful. Find a different professor if possible.
If you are looking for a class that you get the quizzes beforehand this is the class. Very easy to pass if you read. about 10 mins of lecture 40 mins of stories
This guy is the funniest, inappropriate, and most knowledgeable professor I've ever had. This guy could easily do stand up comedy "guy humor" I hate lectures and yet I always looked forward to his class. His exams are straight forward but, you can't breeze through them if you skip class. He will make you work for your grade. He is so worth it.
Do not take his class. You will have to teach yourself all of the information if you care about his grade. Never got through a section powerpoint before a test. Tested on information that was not covered. His humor is funny, but I signed up to learn, not a comedy show. DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH HIM IF YOU WONT READ THE BOOK
First 8 minutes of class he implied everyone here was stupid, then complained about how others were more privileged than him. He talked about himself most of the class. He rambles on about things that have nothing to do with the class. Doesnt go over material yet expects you to know everything. Will never take this Professor again.
This professor is by far my least favorite professor. He spends 90% of the class telling irrelevant stories, and goes through a max of 5 PowerPoint slides in an hour. He also does not have a set day for tests/exams and will tell you less than a week in advance. Be prepared to teach yourself the content. I do not recommend this professor!
He goes on forever about random topics and his test questions are direct quotes from him in class. Attendance isnt mandatory but if you dont go you wont pass a test
Rambles on and on about unrelated information. Tells everyone they need the book and you don't. Class is death by powerpoint and poorly maintained. Spends time each lecture explaining why he isn't racist. Very outdated information. Very politically driven. Likes to inform people how smart he is. Must call Doctor. Avoid professor not worth it.
Such a garbage Professor. He's obviously tenure, and no longer cares about the level of education he is supposed to be providing students with.
Doctor Van Treese's class is very lecture heavy. He goes through a presentation and talks for the entire class, giving stories that go along with each slide. For his quizzes and exams, they are not difficult if you are paying attention in class. He isn't a horrible professor, but he does say some things that could be taken inappropriately or rudely
This professor just sits at the front of the room and reads of the slides he already posted on Canvas. He does not respond to emails so you might as well not even try. He can't hear very well so he has to walk around to you to hold a microphone up to you so that he can hear. He is a very kind sweet man but you will basically be teaching yourself.
Will read directly off of slides that are already accessible on Canvas and tell extra stories completely unrelated. He is hard of hearing so you have to practically shout to ask anything. He is a good guy but not the greatest at teaching. Quizzes rarely have anything to do with the slides, so notes aren't even important. Attendance isn't necessary.
Dr. Van Treese is a little hard of hearing so you need to be quiet loud for him to hear you. It's easy to get a good grade in his class with all the extra credit opportunities he gives you. He is a pretty funny teacher and most assignments are online. It says you need a text book but he has slides that are posted on canvas, so don't buy the book.
Van Treese is a nice guy, but his lectures can be a bit dry since he mainly reads from slides. He shares some funny stories to keep things interesting. The book he asks you to buy isn't needed. for attendance he has you sign in at the beginning or end of class by initialing on paper. Quizzes and tests are online with no lockdown browser or webcam.
Prof. Van Treese is an entertaining lecturer, but his class can be hit-or-miss. The content is available online, so attendance isn't crucial. Quizzes can be tricky, but unstuckstudy helped me prepare effectively.
Half of the time he tells us the things on the slides aren't even correct and we need to use his definition instead of the one in the book. Doesn't say when the exams will be until the day before leaving no time to study. All around just an awful experience in this class.
He ALWAYS finds a way to talk about sexual things. Often talks about unrelated topics that aren't even on the slides up front. Often says to ignore the textbook and accept his opinion as true. Talks about himself more than the content. Takes forever to get through a lesson (only goes through ~5 slides per lecture). Not very kind.
Van T's class is all lecture. He reads directly from slides already on Canvas, making it repetitive. Attendance is taken on paper with initials, so it's easy for someone else to sign in. He goes off topic often and makes sexual comments. Only work is weekly, non-lockdown tests, but I wouldn't recommend this class. It's easy, you wont learn.
I took police psychology and can say that this class dragged by. He reads from slides directly, often forgetting which ones we already went over, and then goes on to tell personal stories. He is hard of hearing and talks pretty slow and quiet. Exams are all online and there is a group project at the end.
